Dawn Geddes My 30th. My husband took me to Rufflets in St Andrews and I remember sitting in the gardens on a beautiful summer’s day, sipping a cold malibu and coke and thinking maybe this 30s lark might be alright after all!

Caroline McClean My 40th. I dreaded it for months, it depressed me and made me feel old. However, the day before, I woke up and decided to embrace it. I organised a big party, got my hair restyled, bought myself a Mini and ended up having an amazing birthday!

This summer I will be holidaying abroad with friends, taking as many day-trips with the kids as possible and celebrating my 40th birthday with lots of fizz and cake. I can’t wait for all of it! I just can’t decide where/how to spend my actual birthday? Do I have a big party and invite everyone I know? Go out for dinner with the family? Go on a spa retreat? Suggestions on a postcard please. Whatever I do I’m sure I’ll reflect on reaching this fabulous milestone, and make a bucket list for the next 40 years, involving all sorts of weird and wonderful plans. I have always wanted to wing-walk… Hope you all have a wonderful summer too!

The summer will be awash with colour at the National Galleries of Scotland with Move, Make, Colour, Create!, a month-long summer holiday activities programme for children of all ages. ating outdoors with your family sounds idyllic. In your head, you picture a big family sitting together smiling and laughing while they dig into a beautiful spread, before raising a glass to each other and basking in sunlight. Sounds like bliss. In reality this is rarely the way it works out, especially when small children are involved. Getting them to sit down to eat is the first problem, then there’s the ensuing food related drama of making sure that the picnic food is cool enough and the meat on the barbeque has been cooked through. By the time we’ve done all this, we’ve still got to spend time pleading with kids to actually eat something, before they dive straight into the pudding course.

In fact, the whole experience can be so frustrating that it is tempting to just ditch the whole idea altogether and just stay indoors. But, with so many important benefits to eating outdoors, including fresh air, vitamin D and quality family time, dining outside is a family tradition worth pursuing. Follow our guide and find out how you can turn dining disaster into alfresco heaven.

Could you please just sit down? If eating outside isn’t a daily occurrence in your family life, your kids are bound to get a little bit over excited by the whole idea. After all, the great outdoors offers a whole host of distractions just waiting to steal your children’s attention away from their lunch. Timing is everything with these things. If you’re

planning a picnic as part of a day trip to a tourist attraction, park or beach, try to factor in time for your kids to explore their surroundings first. Letting them run about, will help them burn off some steam and build up an appetite. If you’re just eating in your garden or someplace familiar, try to make the place they dine, just as exciting as their environment. Consider building a den or putting up a tent for them to eat inside – they’ll be reluctant to leave and much more likely to eat what’s in front of them.

Another good way of encouraging your child to eat is to let them help with the food preparations. Even small children, can help cut rolls, slice fruit and chop vegetables when using a kids safe knife – it’s guaranteed to make their food taste better.

Is it safe to eat? Another stressful element of eating outdoors is ensuring that the food is safe to eat. While most of us are confident in our abilities to cook safely in the kitchen, preparing food to be consumed outside is a whole different ball game. When using barbeques, it’s really important that all food is cooked thoroughly. Consider cooking food in your own oven first, before barbequing it outside to add in that chargrilled flavour. It will taste every bit as good! You should also cut all meat in half to ensure that it’s cooked through, making sure that it’s no longer pink inside and has steam coming out of it. For added peace of mind, consider investing in a food probe which will allow you to check that the meat has reached 75 degrees inside. Hand hygiene is also really important when cooking on a barbeque. Make sure that you wash your hands properly and use different utensils for handling raw and cooked meats. For picnics, a good cool bag is a must for transporting chilled food. Keeping food items like sandwiches, salads and quiches in the fridge until the last minute, will also help them stay cool for longer.

New Charity Launches for “Forgotten” Form of Breast Cancer

iagnosed with secondary breast cancer just last year, Edinburgh mum, Lisa Fleming (34) realised how little she knew about this form of the disease, and how little public attention, support and research funding it attracts. Only 5-7% of funding into breast cancer research focuses solely on secondary breast cancer, which is currently incurable. For Lisa, that meant, when it was discovered, her breast cancer had spread to numerous parts of her body, including her spine, skull and eventually brain. She has since undergone two spinal surgeries, brain surgery and breast surgery and faces further operations. In the meantime, she has had to learn how to walk again. Despite her gruelling treatment, Lisa and her husband, Euan have set up a charity – Make 2nds Count – to raise awareness and muchneeded funds for research into secondary breast cancer. “I actually felt embarrassed when I was diagnosed because I had never heard of it,” said Lisa. “And then I realised how little money was spent on researching it, and so little support for women who have it. It is almost like the relative that nobody talks about. This is killing women but few people know about it. I just thought this can’t be right.” In the first place, all the money raised by the charity will go directly to research into secondary breast cancer currently being conducted at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh by leading Academic Medical Oncologist Dr Olga

Oikonomidou, who is also a patron of the new charity. Dr Oikonomidou said: “Secondary breast cancer might be incurable but is treatable. As new treatments are being approved, patients with secondary breast cancer are starting to have more choices. “We have a long way to go but there is a lot more hope for many years of good quality life for a patient diagnosed with a secondary breast cancer now than there was two decades ago.” Lisa has already lost friends in a support group for people with secondary breast cancer, which only increases her determination to get the message out about this “forgotten” form of the disease. “This situation is just wrong and it breaks my heart, it really does,” she said. “I look at my fiveyear-old son and I think I have got to fight.’’ n

Diary of a Bootcamp By Dominique King

anuary and February were a turning point in my life. I was grounded mentally and physically. I put it down to having been confined to bed for two weeks with the flu, but then I also found myself in a complete state of mental disarray for another four weeks thereafter. Looking back, I realise that it was my body simply shutting down and forcing me to rest after what has been four pretty intense years setting up my business Wunderlife. When I started to gradually feel better, I decided it was time for something new. My health seemed a good place to begin so I enrolled with Achievement Coaching Bootcamp. I didn’t really know anything about it, other

than that ‘Bootcamp’ was not something I had ever considered, as I don’t like getting too dirty and close to mud. In my view, I thought Bootcamps would be too hard core for my liking. And exactly for those reasons it felt right to sign up for it – I wanted purposefully to push myself out of my comfort zone; get fitter by doing something totally new and ‘not me’.

Feeling a bit nervous but mostly excited. Brigitte, the owner and lead coach, greets us all warmly. To my surprise, we’re only women (I always thought Bootcamp to be more of male, butch sort of thing). After a brief warm up, we are

straight into sit ups; sprints etc. quite often working in teams of two, accompanied by great music throughout. Brigitte keeps a close eye on us to make sure we are not twisting and turning in the wrong direction, which is good as I have no idea what I am doing. Halfway through the session I’m starting to run out of puff but I am determined to keep going. Our noses are in the mud a lot, and by the end I am covered in it, but also feeling quite proud for having completed my full first session. The next day I found myself walking sideways as my leg muscles were in serious pain; but I had an appetite for more, and was looking forward to the next session.

and they are running around making air bubbles and mucking in. This for me captures the spirit of sessions. They are designed to make you work hard to get fitter and stronger but also put a smile on your face as there is always an element of fun and surprise involved (gin run; coffee after the session; dress up etc). Brigitte takes the sessions very seriously but not herself (which I think is a great character trait). Today I am cycling to the session which is amazing as four weeks ago I was nearly crawling back on all fours. My legs are starting to look a bit more toned and generally I am feeling a lot more upbeat.

Today was a progress check for those attending the Bootcamp on a regular basis. Brigitte is an ex gymnast, track - and- field athlete turned triathlete, with a University degree in Performance Psychology and 12 years experience in Personal Training and Triathlon Coaching - we’re in good hands! I brought my Brug this time. It is big enough for two of us to do sit ups and push ups, robust enough to withstand the dirt but also doubles up as a great bag for me to carry my workout kit and personal belongings in. At the end of the session, it’s my Brug that is totally covered in mud (not me) which is a huge bonus as far as I am concerned!

I find myself now looking forward to each session come rain or shine. I love the fresh air, the jolly spirit and camaraderie. It’s a professionally designed program to deliver the results you set yourself in the PT session, with a huge dollop of fun. Now, in week three, I notice I am getting stronger, fitter and feeling less painful after each session. One of made JUL / AUG 2018

the mums brought her baby to the session today and we turned the Brug into a play-mat to keep the youngest recruit happy.

4th session

The exercises we are doing follow a certain pattern but vary from session to session in terms of how they are mixed up. For somebody like me who does not want to think too hard to remember the exercises, this is the perfect mix. This session included working out in pairs with running and various exercises which was a lot of fun and brought a great sense of team spirit.

5th session 4 T H M AY Brigitte is running a charity session today, so we are all coming dressed up to support her efforts. Two mums have brought their kids along

6th session 11 T H M AY Today we worked on different work-out stations. Each station had three exercise elements to it and you work your way through it in a group. The groups were made out of different people with different fitness levels but this actually did not matter. Whilst I am getting fitter and more able, for others it was their first class visit. As Brigitte always makes sure there are different variations to suit all fitness levels you can work on your own level and push your boundaries as it suits you. Looking now back over the last 6 sessions, I feel stronger and more toned, have made some new friends and a had a great deal of fun. I am determined to keep my new regime going as we progress through the summer. n

1. WHAT IS A TRADE MARK? A trade mark is a badge of origin, which distinguishes a trader and his or her products from those of other traders. It can be a word, logo, shape, numerals, signature, and even sounds and smells, or a combination of these. Registering a trade mark grants the owner exclusive rights within a particular industry.

2. WHAT DOES A TRADE MARK DO FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Successful businesses have a strong brand identity and a trade mark is a valuable business asset. It can, for instance, be included on a company’s balance sheet. In many cases where one business sells to another they are buying the brand and its reputation. 3. DOES COMPANIES HOUSE REGISTRATION COUNT? No. Registering your business name at Companies House does not provide trade mark protection. Similarly, registering a domain name does not provide any trade mark protection. 4. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A TRADE MARK? A registered trade mark protects your business and livelihood. If you don’t secure your trade

You can use the TM symbol next to unregistered trade marks. However, it is a criminal offence to use the registered trade mark symbol ® where your name or logo is not registered. The ® symbol warns competitors that your mark is registered and also makes them less likely to challenge it. 9. WHAT IF MY BUSINESS PLANS CHANGE? Although you may be a small start-up, this does not mean that you shouldn’t plan for future expansion of your business. Protecting your brand and identity is vital, particularly in the event you wish to sell. 10. HOW LONG DOES A TRADE MARK LAST? Once registered, a trade mark lasts for ten years but can be renewed indefinitely.

THE WILD OUTDOORS ACTIVITY CAMPS For a summer that lasts a lifetime

he school summer holidays are when some of our most fond childhood memories are created; long hot days spent on big adventures sharing laughs with friends. The Wild Outdoors Activity Camps (based in the beautiful grounds of Thirlestane Castle) want children to gain a love of the outdoors, learn about the outdoors, and be able to thrive in the outdoors. The team believe there are key skills that every child should have, and throughout their camps the children get the chance to learn a few, if not all, of these skills; tree identification, safe fire lighting, spotting animal tracks, first aid, tying knots plus many more. But it’s all about fun too! So, activities such as target sports (archery, catapults, etc.), Gokarting, stalking and tracking games, wide field games, songs, stories and hot chocolate and marshmallows around the camp fire are all on the schedule too. Food is hugely important on these camps, and the team ensure that each child eats healthy, freshly prepared food throughout the day, with delicious snacks between meals. Food is not just about the eating though, it is about the preparation. They have meals that the children help cook using their newly acquired wild cooking skills; such as lamb kebabs, whole roasted salmon, bushcraft-burgers, mac ’n’ cheese and

many more delicious exciting meals. The Wild Outdoors Camps are also about creativity, and there are lots of activities where the children can make their own tribal flags, creative tails and head dresses, fantastic beast traps, bug hotels and many more. Children’s welfare is at the heart of everything The Wild Outdoors team believe in, and every member of staff is on the PVG scheme and holds a first aid qualification. They understand how important your child and their experiences are to you; so when your child comes home from camp, you will love to hear the stories they tell, with pure excitement in their eyes. For children staying at night-time, there are canvas tents to sleep in. LET’S TALK ABOUT

he eyes are such a wonderful gift, allowing us to enjoy a bright and colourful life, capturing a wealth of wonderful sights and experiences. We only get one pair of eyes. An obvious statement, yet many are fastidious about visiting the dentist (which is great!) but don’t give the same attention to their vision. There is no second chance with the eyes. Once the damage is done, whilst the effects may not be apparent for many decades, it is irreversible. WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR A child should have their eyes examined at least every two years from their pre-school year, but earlier and more frequently if you have any cause for concern. It is very hard to spot if a small child has an issue with their vision. They won’t know the way the see isn’t normal. Here are some things to look out for: ● Headaches and sore eyes - your child rubbing their eyes or temples. ● Difficulty concentrating - often apparent when a child starts school, for instance if they are struggling focus on the smartboard for prolonged periods. ● Losing their place when reading or complaining

that the words seem jumbled, wobbly or that the letters are moving on the page. ● Having issues with coordination for example when playing ball games or balancing, or perhaps they just seem a little clumsy and accident prone. ● Squinting or closing one eye when reading or watching television. ● Eyes pointing in different directions which can be particularly obvious when they are tired. ● Showing sensitivity to light or the glare from a screen, or having very watery eyes. None of these mean your child definitely has an issue with their eyesight but they are worth booking them in for an eye examination to eliminate the possibility. Ultimately, trust your instinct and never, ever think you’re wasting an optometrist’s time by getting something checked over. “I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT MY CHILD NEEDS GLASSES…” This can be very upsetting for a parent. No one wants their child to meet a hurdle in life but there are now so many options it doesn’t mean they need to be restricted in any way.

Here are some tips if you find they need vision correction. Let your child choose frames they love: there are so many fab designs out there, character frames for little ones to trendy ones for budding fashionistas. Find ones that they want to show off and embrace them, showing excitement when they first wear them. They will quickly love their new accessory. Let them take time to get used to them: don’t force them to wear them all the time. Ease them in and reward them for remembering to put them on. Glasses for all occasions: having a prescription shouldn’t restrict your child, from prescription goggles for swimming, to wrap around glasses for playing sport. In fact, correcting their vision should help them with coordination and spatial awareness, so could have a hugely positive impact. Contact lenses are for kids too: there are so many options available for children as young as seven. Ortho-K lenses worn overnight, reshaping the eye so the child can have perfect vision by day without wearing glasses or lenses to school. Myopia Management lenses, reducing the progression of short-sightedness in children so when they reach adulthood their prescription will be a lot lower than it would be if left untreated. And dailies, which are perfect for children who feel self-conscious wearing glasses or feel their eyewear gets in the way of their dailies lives. Not all opticians offer contact lenses for children, so if you want to explore your options, look around for one that specialises in children’s lenses. If you have found that your child needs glasses, please try not to worry. Ensure their vision is closely monitored and embrace their new eyewear. n

’m a stay-at-home mum of three children, one with a little extra,” Aoife Burns says of her life, which likely echoes that of many Edinburgh families. Irish-born Aoife and her Edinburgh husband have three children; Dillon is 7, Ciara is 5, and Hugo is 1. What makes their story different, however, is that the “extra” refers to a copy of chromosome 21; Ciara has Down Syndrome. Aoife, who has become a bit of an Instagram star with over 1000 followers (@ edinburghmumma), has been open with her family’s story since Ciara’s birth. “I think being open and honest is an important first step in how we can change the way we discuss and perceive additional needs and disability,” she says. “I find people are happy to take my lead. Once I open that

conversation by talking about my daughter they will ask questions that they maybe wouldn’t have felt comfortable asking otherwise.”

THIS GIRL CAN AND THIS GIRL WILL So how do they make it work? Like everyone’s, mornings are hectic; “we tend to use the ‘divide and conquer’ tactic,” Aoife says, citing superorganisation as the key: school bags ready at the front door, uniforms and outfits laid out the night before. “I’ve learned that my children tend to go backwards in the morning and are easily distracted so at that time of day the less I expect

from them the better. Team work makes the dream work.” Like many parents, Aoife finds it challenging to spend quality time with all of her children every day, but she’s sensible about it. “I realise that it’s normal for siblings to have to share their parents,” she says, though things are easing a bit now that the baby is older. Aoife even says that adding a third child was easier than the first two. “I have trusted my own instincts as a mother more and felt like I knew the ropes well enough to let myself enjoy the experience and let go of the anxiety I had first time round.” Of course the family’s challenges extend to Ciara’s condition, but Aoife has created a mantra of sorts that she often shares on social media alongside stories of Ciara’s

life: this girl can and this girl will. “In my ignorance, when she was born I thought she wouldn’t be capable of doing all the things a typical child would do,” Aoife remembers. “Once I got to know her I could see the sparkle in her eye, and I decided very early on that she would have the same opportunity to learn and experience life as her siblings and peers, and that we as parents had a responsibility to ensure that.” Their family and support network have high expectations of Ciara. They are ready to find the right support and encouragement to deal with her learning disability, and will give her the time she needs to work things out. “She has flourished at mainstream nursery and will be starting at our local primary school in August. She has been skiing and horse riding, attends regular ballet, swimming, and ball sports classes, and she’s travelled a bit too. Not bad for a 5-year-old!” Aoife seems to be actively tearing down some of the awkwardness that comes with parenting children with additional needs. “It’s all very well saying we should talk about these issues but if we are not opening those gates in the first place, people feel shy or feel like they may be acting intrusively by asking questions,” she says. “Another way of opening communication around additional needs is for parents to start conversations with their children. Explain that some people need lots of support, some find it difficult to speak, some can’t walk, but that they still have feelings and a quality of life just like everyone else. Take the fear away before it develops at all. Let them know it’s ok to be different, and it’s a positive thing to meet people from all walks of life. Children learn from their parents, so set the right example for them and teach them compassion.” n

In this edition we spoke with mum, Melanie, about photography experts, Studiolife Photography. Studiolife Photography claims... They are a boutique photography studio specialising in natural newborn, baby and family photography.

Melanie says... When we found out we were pregnant with our first baby, we were elated and nervous. So when it came to choosing a newborn photographer we did our fair share of internet research. We knew exactly the look we wanted so when we came across Zsofi’s portfolio we instantly fell in love with her photography. Zsofi explained everything from how to prepare for the shoot and what to expect on the day putting us at ease. Zsofi’s studio is gorgeous and perfect for newborns, it’s comfortable, safe and warm for baby’s comfort and also parents, we were able to sit back, relax and drink coffee whilst watching Zsofi at work. The whole experience was amazing, at first I wasn’t sure how I would feel handing over my baby girl but after meeting Zsofi I honestly never hesitated. Zsofi was so gentle and had an amazing way of soothing her, making sure she was comfortable, happy and took great care of her at all times, she truly is a baby whisperer! Watching Zsofi photograph our baby girl was magical, you can tell she loves what she does. Zsofi was patient, creative and has a keen eye for detail with different set-ups using her beautiful handmade headbands, bonnets, props and ultra-soft wraps. Newborn photos are important to us, it’s just lovely to have reminders of these first days together and so nice to be able to look back at these photos in the years to come. It’s also a beautiful way to share this special time in our life with family and friends.
