The Easter holidays are my absolute favourite holidays. They offer no stress like Christmas, they’re a perfect two-weeks long, my winter clothes and boots have been packed away in favour of pumps and cropped jackets, and Lent is over so I can eat chocolate again! My kids love it too because there’s an abundance of things to do; places re-open for the warmer season, we dust the cobwebs off their bikes and scooters, and go on more day-trips and weekend outings. What’s not to love! See you out and about

Early Stages

(Ages 4-6)

Children aged from four to six begin their Stagecoach journey in our Early Stages classes. The 90-minute classes are split into three sections: 30 minutes for singing, 30 minutes for dancing, and 30 minutes for acting. Classes run during term time.

Turtle Tots swimmers were busy splashing for cash raising vital funds for Global’s Make Some Noise. Local Edinburgh fundraiser, two-year-old Helena was the area’s top fundraiser raising over £800 of the total £47,000.

EDINBURGH DESIGNER MAKES HER MARK Little Letter Studio has launched two new children’s wallpapers, Awesome Alphabet and Woodland Tales, by Jo Martin. Both wallpapers feature hand-drawn, quirky details designed to fire childhood imaginations. The inspiration to design children’s wallpapers came from Jo Martin’s own childhood memories: “I remember lying in bed as a child and whilst falling asleep, I’d look at the wallpaper next to my bed and in the abstract swirls and patterns, I’d create characters and stories. I’d return to the characters each night and it provided great comfort and reassurance. NEWS THE LITTLE FELT FACTORY It’s an exciting time at The Little Felt Factory; their kitchen table business is growing very quickly indeed! NEWS WATER BABIES CLASSES AREN’T JUST FOR VERY WEE ONES Due to demand for classes in older age groups, your toddler can now join in by way of an introduction class. These sessions are aimed at toddlers from 18 months with little to no swimming experience and aim to provide a structured introduction to swimming, the pool environment and some of the key skills taught within the Water Babies programme. After attending a term of these classes, your child could then start the next term in an existing Water Babies class. BEARFOOT COMEDY CLUB The Bearfoot Comedy Club brings local laughter to the South of Edinburgh every 1st Friday of the Month. Isle of Mull The Isle of Mull will already be familiar to most visitors, thanks to the beloved children’s TV programme Balamory. knew that chickenpox was going to strike, but it caught us completely unawares. Its possibility crept vaguely into my thoughts every now and again, but it was always something that would happen in the future. Even when those first little red splodges appeared on Jack’s tummy, the thought didn’t enter my head. Then there were more. Then they were everywhere. Oh my goodness. Chickenpox. I got out my diary and contacted everyone we’d seen over the past three weeks. I’d heard about those chicken pox parties, where parents take their little ones to an infected house to get it all over and done with. But let’s get real: Chickenpox is horrible. What’s more, it’s inconvenient. So although the response from friends was warm and caring, there was a definite hint of uh-oh. At the time of writing, I have one case of crosscontamination confirmed. I’ve been keeping my ear to ground about the source of Jack’s virus, but so far the intelligence I’ve gathered has been inconclusive. Jack was absolutely fine. In fact, he wasn’t fazed in the slightest. Having read all of made MAR / APR 2018

the horror stories that Google could provide me with, I was waiting with bated breath for terrible symptoms. Don’t get me wrong; Jack was absolutely covered in spots and very itchy. I had to sleep in his little cotbed with him for several nights to gently stop him from clawing at his blisters. But he was still loving life. And lots of Peppa Pig. That little Tom was also going to catch chickenpox was a certainty. As soon as his older brother’s rash appeared I texted a friend to say, “That’s me stuck indoors for at least a fortnight”. But Tom had a few little blisters on his back and his face, and that was that. Both boys went back to nursery a week later. I know we’ve been pretty lucky with our experience of chickenpox. I’ve also learnt that for all of the things that go badly, there are more that go right. A few times I’ve woken up in a bad mood worried about something I’ve got to do during the day, only to have a really positive time. Let’s face it, when you’re a mum of toddlers simply a warm coffee can turn your day around. Our experience has also taught me that I’ve very prone to over-

But Jack and I had several snuggly afternoons watching movies that I found very relaxing. Jack was calmer, too. So I’ve started to take things at a bit of a slower pace. I’m trying not to over-commit us, or pack our schedule full of activities that will set us in a whirlwind of rushed meals and “sorry we’re running late” texts. Plus I feel a little bit smug that we’ve jumped the hurdle and joined a new club. We’ve been there, done that and got the calamine-stained t-shirt. n

efore I had my son, I’d not heard of the term ‘pregnancy and maternity discrimination’. Then I watched a BBC report on the epidemic of women losing their jobs once they decide to try for a family. This chimed with what a close friend was going through. As I worked my way around Edinburgh’s Bookbug sessions and baby classes, I began to drop the topic into conversation. Within six months more than twenty women had confided in me that they too were being pushed out of their place of work. They are not alone. A report from EHRC in 2016 found that 54,000 women each year lose their job because they are pregnant or because they have children. Mothers are often made redundant or their role changes (in terms of responsibility or pay grade) while they are on maternity leave, but increasingly the discrimination is more difficult to prove.

Women who have enjoyed positive relationships with their employer are suddenly removed from projects, undermined in front of their colleagues, told they are not allowed to go to midwife appointments. They are worn down, made to feel useless at a time when they are at their most vulnerable, and told to put up or shut up. This is the best kept secret of motherhood. We are told repeatedly that we’ll lose our sleep, our spare time, our minds (don’t get me started on the detrimental impact of the term ‘baby brain’ on women in the workplace) but were you told - in explicit terms - that you could lose your job? Didn’t think so. Women often end up being paid thousands of pounds less in their next job after an experience of maternity discrimination. And we wonder why the gender pay gap still exists. In 2016 I tweeted asking for women who

THE FACTS: 54,000 women across the UK experience maternity discrimination each year (over 30,000 Scottish women - that’s 3 out of 4 women in Scotland) Pregnancy and maternity is one of nine “protected characteristics” covered by the Equality Act 2010. 77% of mothers in paid employment report that they have experienced maternity discrimination. Just 3% have gone through internal grievance processes. Less than 1% have taken the issue to tribunal

have experienced this type of bullying to email me and within ten minutes I had the accounts of six women sitting in my inbox, four from here in Edinburgh. I worked with the women to develop a case study interview where I invite women to talk through their experience, starting at six months before they became a mother. Eighteen months and over 100 interviews later I can report that pregnancy and maternity discrimination is rife in Edinburgh. If it’s not happening to you, it’s definitely happening to someone you know. The majority are women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth, but I have also spoken with women going through IVF and adoption. Women who have miscarried or have been through a stillbirth have been treated appallingly, too. Not only is this illegal, a grave injustice to the capable women in question and often irreparably damaging to both career and confidence, but we have to question what this is doing to the workplace overall.

It’s little wonder that despite women making up 51% of the population, we are a long way off reaching gender equality in most sectors. There is a huge variety in the backgrounds and incomes of the women I speak with, but one thing is clear to me. In every single situation, there are key points in her pregnancy where a) a woman is at her most vulnerable to discrimination and b) most likely to walk away from her job without making a complaint. I’ve mapped these and I am committed to fighting for changes to be made - where necessary to the law - so that women have the protections that they deserve. There are instances where I have interviewed several women from the same organisation. As disturbing as it is to know that in some Edinburgh institutions workplace bullying towards mothers is systemic, it also means that I can visit the employer in question to try to work with them on making changes whilst protecting the identities of the women I have spoken with. The benefits of this service are yet to be appreciated by the bosses that I meet, but there is a definite change in the air. Of course, the shift that is coming is driven by the bullied, not the bullies. Women have secrets that they are no longer willing to keep. The #MeToo movement has gained momentum, and it seems that 2018 is the year for #timesup. Time’s up, indeed. Through my project, Mother’s

Work, I am going to continue to represent women who have experienced pregnancy or maternity discrimination. I am planning a series of events in Edinburgh, pushing this issue with Scottish media and working with politicians to create change. If you don’t take action against your employer then you aren’t able to talk about what has happened as the other party hasn’t had a chance to fight their corner. was a real farm kid—a ride-my-horse-to-school kind of farm kid. I had every type of pet you can think of, all who touched my life in ways I will never forget. When my brothers didn’t want to play my girly games, Ginger the cat never said no to dressing up in my doll’s clothes. When I had a bad day at school, Dusky the horse was always there, ready to laugh with me. And trust me, horses do laugh! Recently, my mother sent me some old childhood photographs she found. Just about every one of them was of my pets and me. Just looking at those photos warmed my soul. They took me right back to those moments, reconnected me with feelings of unconditional love, and my happy childhood. After spending the greater part of an afternoon remembering and rejoicing, I felt so grateful to my parents for having picked up the camera, and capturing those important snippets of time. Many things in my life inspire me in my work as a photographer, and this was one of those times. I have visions of gorgeous portraits of my daughter and her cat all dressed up in their best dress up clothes, cuddling and sharing a tender moment, or jumping around playing catch. I want my daughter to have as many connections to her joyful childhood moments as I can possibly create for her, just as my mother did for me. Thank goodness, the only way to see your photos back then where in prints, otherwise my brothers would have flushed her phone down the toilet with all those pictures a long time ago! used to work as an investigative journalist for the BBC. About 8 years ago I was tasked with working undercover in an abattoir to research the quality of meat going into our supermarkets. It was more the experience itself than what I discovered there that prompted me to become a vegetarian. The years passed and I slowly started to eat meat again. But then I read about the Edinburgh-based LeanFit programme and it felt absolutely right that I should take part. David Waine is a personal trainer and fitness coach who runs classes in Edinburgh, including a popular “Fit Mummy” bootcamp. He used to be an overweight smoker with a junk food addiction. The loss of his mum to cancer prompted him to reassess his lifestyle, and after years of trying different diets he came across plant based nutrition. Last year he and his wife Carly launched LeanFit, an eight week online plant based nutrition programme. They have two little boys, so make the recipes as simple to prepare and family-friendly as possible. ‘My kids are super fussy,’ he tells me. This revelation comes as a huge surprise to me, after seeing numerous photos of his children eating platefuls of veggies. ‘Carly has had to find ways to get their greens into them,’ he says. ‘A huge proportion of people who take the course are mums and dads and our recipes have been a revelation.’ As soon as I received my password for the LeanFit recipe book, I clicked on the “Sweet Treats” section. To my amazement, I found carrot cake muffins. What’s more, the recipe says that you can eat them for breakfast! No wonder David and Carly’s little chaps are loving mealtimes.

You wouldn’t know that there is zero naughtiness in these! To make them yourself you’ll need: • • • • • • • • • •

300g grated carrots 100g grated apples 140g rolled oats 100g buckwheat flour 100g raisins 5 tablespoons almond butter 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 8 tablespoons date syrup 250ml almond milk

THEN: 1. Preheat your oven to 160C (140C fan). 2. Place the grated carrots and apples and all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. 3. Heat the almond milk and almond butter in a saucepan and warm until combined. 4. Add your warm liquid to the bowl with all the other ingredients and combine everything well. 5. Scoop your mixture into 12 muffin cases that are in a 12 hole muffin tray (sprinkle some chopped walnuts over the muffins if you like). 6. Bake for around 35 minutes, until the tops turn golden brown. 7. Remove them from the oven and let them sit for 10 minutes to cool slightly in the tray and then place them on a cooling rack for another 20 minutes before digging in. I have to say, I was a little sceptical that I could hoodwink my two little chocoholics into eating this carrot cake, or the no-added-sugar (and entirely plant based) cookies and brownies. But they didn’t even blink. The Easy Quinoa Pizza went down a treat too. To try making your own you’ll need: FOR THE PIZZA CRUST • ¾ cup quinoa (soaked for about 8 hours or overnight) • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar • 2 tsp mixed herbs - I use oregano and basil • A sprinkling of chilli powder/flakes • 1 tsp garlic powder • 2 tbsp of tomato paste • Any vegetables you fancy on top!

THEN: 1. Soak the quinoa overnight or for about 8 hours in water. 2. Pre-heat the oven to 190C. Drain the quinoa then put it into a food processor with the apple cider vinegar, herbs, chilli and garlic. Blend for a few minutes until a smooth dough forms. 3. Line the bottom of an oven dish with baking parchment and a wipe of olive oil and pour the mix in, spreading evenly then bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is firm and starting to brown around the edges. 4. Remove and add your toppings, either place it in the oven for a few minutes to warm them or enjoy your toppings raw!

‘It’s very satisfying making creamy or baked plant based foods that people would never suspect is plant based, or even think is achievable,’ says nutritional therapist Claire Hider. ‘My brownies fooled my partner, and they’re made with sweet potatoes!’ Claire used to be a civil servant, but qualified five years ago as a nutritional therapist. She became a vegetarian in her mid-twenties because of her love of animals. But the turn to veganism in her mid-forties was for health reasons. Her Edinburgh-based business is called Vital Spark, so-called due to her experience of losing her spark and then retrieving it with a whole food, plant based diet. ‘It’s fairly common for clients to email me with concerns that they’re not feeding their children a comprehensive enough vegan diet,’ says Claire Hider. When asked for advice about how to make sure a child isn’t missing out on vital nutrients, she points parents towards Viva. ‘They have a lovely, detailed booklet,which is nearly 60 pages long. It has great nutritional advice for following a plant based diet during pregnancy and useful information for parents with babies and young children too. Dietician Ginny Messina is also a very sensible and down to earth source of information,’ she adds. ‘She won’t have you spending hours in the kitchen making things from chia seeds.’ My boys are happily scoffing Mexican Bean Potato Skins and Roasted Vegetable Lasagne. But they’re still drinking generous cups of milk,

IT’S VERY SATISFYING MAKING CREAMY OR BAKED PLANT BASED FOODS THAT PEOPLE WOULD NEVER SUSPECT IS PLANT BASED a source of calcium that I’m too cautious to stop. ‘It’s completely programmed into us that milk consumption is a must,’ says Claire. ‘When I was little, it would have been seen as child neglect if my parents hadn’t given me dairy. But milks made with grains and pulses are great nutritionally. Oat milk tastes realistic, and oats are great for eczema and other childhood skin conditions. Pea milk is a new one. It has a high protein profile like hemp milk.’ Dr Stephen Turner is the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Officer for Scotland. He maintains that, ‘For 90% of us, dairy products are a suitable, easy and affordable way to get the fats, vitamins and minerals that we need. We definitely need the plant based foods that tick the vegan box, but we started as hunter gatherers and became farmers. We’ve evolved to live in that environment so we’re made to eat both meat and plants.’

A baby triples its birth weight in the first year. By the age of 2 a child is already half his or her adult height. ‘A huge amount of growth happens when you’re under five and you need all of the protein, carbohydrates, fats, nutrients and vitamins that come with a balanced diet,’ he says. Claire Hider disagrees that children need animal products to be healthy and feels that a plant based diet offers everything they require to thrive. ‘When people read the advice from The Vegan Society about cooking for children, they’re surprised that the diet is quite carb-heavy, which is a source of lots of energy. Children need plenty of good fats too. Avocados for example are naturally nutrient dense with a substantial amount of healthy fatty acids.’ David Waine from LeanFit is very relaxed about the choices his programme’s participants make. ‘As long as 50% of your diet is plant based, I’m happy,’ he says. ‘I want to bring awareness to families about the benefits of plant based nutrition. There is absolutely no pressure. Don’t worry about sharing a photo of your turkey

chilli in our Facebook group. Or if you have social occasion or weekend away, enjoy yourself! Just change up your ingredients and include more plant based foods again on Monday.’ The only thing that I haven’t quite got to grips with yet is what kind of milk to have in my tea. None of the plant based versions taste quite right to me yet. Apart from that, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. I’m certainly not wasting away; far from it! As far as I’m concerned, this is a brilliant opportunity to learn how to get as many veggies as possible into my boys’ diet. And we can all enjoy carrot cake for breakfast while we’re at it. n

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WORK/ LIFE BALANCE? For me it’s all about having a good digital detox every day. The nature of my work as a TV presenter, therapist and author is that I’m online, all the time. Social media is a big part of what I do; connecting with people who are interested in my tips and advice. I make sure I turn all my devices off by 9pm and they are banned in the bedroom. It really helps make sure my husband and I communicate properly, have cuddles and read books instead of gawping at the screen incessantly. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF ANXIETY THAT PARENTS SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR? A general feeling of dread, not ‘connecting’ with life, quite possibly your baby too, not really enjoying much anymore, becoming obsessive over actions and thoughts, and struggling to sleep are all signs that anxiety is taking over to unhealthy levels.

Your midwife, health visitor, partner, family, friends, GP, charity such as PANDAS Foundation or Mind....don’t suffer in silence....you’re normal and so many of us mums and dads, including me, feel all kinds of horrible things when becoming a parent (as well as the nice stuff)... no one will take your baby away just because you’re not coping too well with all the changes and mental health challenges that parenthood can bring. Support as early as you notice the signs is key. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO EDINBURGH? I absolutely LOVE Edinburgh! I’ve been several times, the first was as kid when my parents took my brothers and me to the castle where we had a massive argument over who got to sit on the cannons! I’ve since been to the famous Edinburgh Festival, have hosted various events for The Princes Trust and I took part in the Edinburgh Wellbeing Festival in January.

I really struggled at first, it took me months to adjust to suddenly having a little person 24-7 and I definitely found it overwhelming I couldn’t just do what I wanted when I wanted any more. If only there was an ondemand service for good, trusted and highly recommended babysitters … well there is! It’s called bubble…

THE BUBBLE APP GREW FROM THE JOY OF PARENTHOOD, AND THE REALISATION THAT FINDING A TRUSTED SOURCE OF BABYSITTERS WAS GOING TO BE KEY TO SURVIVING IT!

WHAT IS BUBBLE AND HOW DOES IT WORK? bubble is an on-demand babysitting app that allows parents to regain some flexibility back into their lives. The app, which lets parents pay online, uses social and community data to connect parents to babysitters their friends have used and lets them read reviews left by other mums and dads; it works a little like LinkedIn. When parents are looking for childcare they put out a request for a sitter using the express book service, which typically sees responses in around 43 seconds. Sitters within the local area are alerted and have the option to bid for the sit. Parents can then browse the profiles of the available sitters and select the sitter of their choice. bubble also has a messaging channel on the app so that both the parents and babysitters can remain in contact. Parents pay a £3.50 booking fee and no other additional charges. WHY USE BUBBLE? Ultimately bubble provides families flexibility, allowing parents to continue with their day-to-day lives by making it quick and easy to find trusted and recommended childcare. Parents book sitters for all sorts of reasons - a lie in on a Sunday morning, a trip to the cinema, or, even if they’ve gone into labour! Sitters on bubble range from students, teachers and nannies. There are also registered nurses on the app too, allowing parents whose children

Parents are already trying to do this in the ‘real world’ every day. bubble just makes this process far simpler, smarter and more transparent for both parent and sitters. Yes it’s quick, yes it’s convenient and yes it’s an ‘app’! But parents aren’t simply tapping a button to have a sitter show up. Shopping with children S

hopping with children can be a perilous affair. The perils vary in severity. There are major, severe perils, such as losing your child in a shop. This happened to me in a cloth and furniture shop a couple of years ago. I lost my son. Couldn’t find him anywhere. A ten minute rampage through the shop ensued as I dived under curtain material in a desperate hunt for my child and threw bed linen and cushions with a wild frenzy as I scoured furniture displays to find him. I charged into back offices and other rooms, flinging open the door with a scream of ‘have you seen a small toddler’ whilst seamstresses dropped sewing machines on their feet and sewed their fingers together in startled shock. Ten minutes later, my son was discovered. Playing a game of hide and seek. It was the hiding part. Blissfully unaware of a father’s panic. Suffice to say, in the words of Her Majesty, ‘one was not amused’. Then there are the more minor perils, such as facing prosecution on behalf on your child for grievous bodily harm after they slayed another customer in a shop with the pointed end of the large

The same umbrella that they insisted on carrying outside in the rain above your head, despite the fact that they have neither the strength nor the height to position and carry the umbrella above your head, resulting in you wandering along George Street with a stoop more severe than the Hunchback of Notre Dame. There are the embarrassing perils. The tantrums. Arms and legs flailing in an aisle of Waitrose whilst unsympathetic and disapproving shoppers weave their trolleys past whilst tutting their heads. (And that’s when you realise the alcohol aisle isn’t open yet. It’s worse when it’s the children having the tantrum).

The best story of shopping with children involve a clothes rail. And for once, it doesn’t involve me or my children. Whilst seeking guidance from a helpful store assistant with regards a potential clothes purchase for his wife, a father’s two eldest children, playing in the slight distance, began a game involving karate kicking. One thing led to another (as inevitably it does), a karate kick went too far and one child got flung into a long neat rail of clothing which promptly toppled over sending clothes (and a child) flying. The father and store assistant glanced across. Without missing a beat, the store assistant helpfully added ‘perhaps Sir would be better with online shopping’. I’ve not experienced that. Yet. n
