s a mother of two tiny chocoholics, I know exactly how hard it is to pry sticky fingers away from the Percy Pigs and crispy cakes at children’s parties. Moreover, it is nigh on impossible to point those sweet-toothed toddlers in the direction of those beautifully crafted ham and salad sandwich fingers. While banishing sweet treats altogether is just plain mean (speaking as someone who needs that afternoon Galaxy bar) it is difficult to curb the sugar intake to a level that isn’t going to make your alreadyhyper party animal explode like the mouthful of popping candy they’ve just scoffed. Healthy party food does not have to be sticks of carrot and celery that inevitably end up in the bin. In an attempt to help fellow parents find that perfect balance of fun and nutritious, The Pantry team have put together some quick recipes, appealing to both the eyes and bellies of your little party goers. Bin the breadsticks and take note!

Fruit pops

The best fruits to use for this are grapes, strawberries and slices of apple. Pierce these onto a lollypop stick and set aside.

To make the topping, you can use melted chocolate, melted white chocolate or my favourite… yoghurt coating. To make the yoghurt coating, you need to sieve icing sugar into yoghurt until it is the consistency of PVA glue. You can use strawberry flavour yoghurt for the pink colour too. Get a selection of little bowls filled with sprinkles, chopped nuts, oats, grated chocolate, mini marshmallows and anything else your wee ones like. Then it’s simple….get dunking! Make sure you have some greaseproof paper laid out onto a baking tray to set them down on once they are made. Then pop them into the fridge until needed.

Hungry caterpillar sandwich

This little chap is a little more time consuming than just making some sandwiches….but far more likely to end up in your little party-goers mouths than the floor…or the bin! Make a selection of sandwiches then cut out circles with a cookie cutter. You will need to use some lollypop sticks or toothpicks to hold him in place. For the head of your hungry caterpillar you just need a tomato, some cucumber sticks

Mini Wholemeal Pitta Pizzas (delicious hot or cold)

for his antennae (they also make the legs!) and a couple of olives for his eyes (extra points for the little foodies that munch away on the olives!)

Rainbow sausage rolls

This is a great way of sneaking in some vegetables (and great for weekend treats too). Grate some carrot, onion, courgette, pumpkin and even apple or any other vegetable you like. In a large bowl, mix minced beef or pork (500g will make 20 sausage rolls), vegetables, including cooked diced onion & garlic, apple, 1 egg, breadcrumbs, herbs, mustard, tomato puree and a sprinkle of water. Lay out a shop bought pastry sheet (puff or short crust works) Using about 1/2 cup sausage mix, place it in the middle of each half of the pastry, working it into a long sausage about 2cm wide x 1cm high from end to end then brush one side with egg wash. Roll up your rolls then cut into individual sizes (I would suggest for wee ones about 4cm). These will need to then cook in the oven with a little egg wash on the top for 30 minutes or until golden on a baking tray lined with greaseproof. Make sure there is about 2cm between them to allow them to expand in the oven.

Fry off some shallots in a little olive oil with some garlic and thyme. Let them get really translucent then thrown in a jar of pasata or a tin of tomatoes. Cook it down for 10 minutes, then once it has cooled, pass it through a sieve. You have lovely smooth pizza base sauce! Grate some cheese (the mixed bags of mozzarella and cheddar pre grated from Waitrose or Sainsburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are perfect for saving some time here!) Set out in little bowls any other toppings you want to put on the pizzas. Family favourites in our house are sweetcorn, ham and diced up red pepper. Then get creative! The mini pittas (Waitrose 10 for ÂŁ1) do not need warmed or toasted in advance just put a small spoonful of your tomato mix, your toppings and then your cheese then pop under the grill until crispy. You can serve these cold or hot, but remember only re-heat them once.
