Winter wows Don’t let the chill cramp your style – these makeup trends and tricks are sure to make you the talk of the town words A s h a

It’s time to let go and indulge in an extra wine glass or two as you let your hair down. But before you RSVP to any of the festive celebrations round the corner, get your gear together with the season’s absolute makeup musthaves. Here’s a complete beauty lesson on the trends to watch out for and the tips and tricks to get the looks right.

Ace the base

With a flawless complexion, makeup is enhanced even more. Winter is actually the perfect time to make the most of your foundation. It hides the redness that cold weather often induces on the skin and it also stays put beautifully since the sweltering heat is not an issue. But all’s not well as the skin needs extra nourishment in this weather. Choose a foundation that loves your skin and blends well, like Lancome’s Teint Visionnaire Skin Correcting Makeup Duo that comes with a concealer. How-to: Prep your skin well with a cleanser and moisturiser. Conceal problem spots like blemishes and dark circles with the help of a concealer. Take a coin-sized amount of foundation and lightly pat it with your fingertips till it blends seamlessly. If you think you’ve applied too much, roll a cotton ball over your face in a smooth motion to get rid of the excess.

Steer clear of the bronzer this season as it is best suited for sunny summers. Instead, opt for warm pinks, old rose and coral hues. Remember to invest in a good blush brush as well as a contouring brush to create those sculpted supermodel cheek bones. You may also want to get your hands on M.A.C’s Strobe Cream for that dewy finishing touch.

Sparkly touches

Let’s face it, the party season isn’t complete without some shine and dazzle. Go all out with gunmetal, copper, dark silver and bold bronze. Glitter and metallic finishes work best on the eyes. Metallic eye shadows and glitter eye liners work well – but not as a combo deal. Stick to one. Another great way to incorporate this trend is to wear glitter or metallic hues on your talons. And if you are planning on showing some skin, get a hold of shimmering body lotions and dry oils to shine into the night. How-to: For the eyes, make sure to create a good base with foundation so that the shadow stays put. A metallic smoky eye is your best bet as it suits all complexions and is perfect to create that drama and mystery for a night out. Another idea is to wear black extended eye liner and sweep a thinner line of glitter liner across the top lid.

How-to: First up, contour the hollows of your cheeks just under the cheekbone with an absolutely matte blush or loose powder that is one shade darker than your complexion. Next, on the apples of your cheeks, sweep your blush in a 45 degree angle. Coral shades look best on dusky skin while warm pinks flatter fair and wheatish complexions. Finally, once the blush has settled, use a pea-sized amount of M.A.C’s Strobe Cream and dab it just between the eye sockets and the apples to lift your cheek bones. Evening Swag This winter, dashing has been redefined – but the flashy textures and overblown florals might not be for everyone. Bravehearts will love the unabashed sateen, silk jacquards and embroidery on display – as exemplified by Dolce & Gabbana’s lush, devout prints, Frankie Morello’s mirrored jackets and Tom Ford’s bright shantung silk tuxes.

Command and Control

The big coat strikes back. The spotlight this season is on the seriousness of military styles – with a sartorial softness. Case in point: Burberry’s green topcoat with multiple cargo pockets, or Salvatore Ferragamo’s navy wool coat with shearing lining. In fact, we haven’t seen big coats look so polished since Helmut Lang and Alexander McQueen made ‘em big and beautiful back in the Noughties. The key details this time around: Epaulettes, big flap pockets and brass buttons. Attention!

Classic comfort foods Pump up your energy with these super foods and hot drinks. Stay warm for the upcoming season. words Manisha Almadi Midha

Soups and stews

It’s time to move from cold salads to hot soups. Tomato soup, for example, is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Use fresh, ripe tomatoes or sun-dried tomatoes for your bowl of soup. Sautee tomatoes and onions in olive oil in a pan. Add dill, basil, onions and parsley. Avoid canned soups as they are often overloaded with sodium, oils and high calories. You can also have a hearty stew with root vegetables and spices. Relish a bowl of soup at Mamagoto.

Let’s Eat

Visit food markets to stock up on whole grains and legumes. Some food stores stock some of the most exotic imported food products.

Eat whole grains

Hot, whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, oats, barley, buckwheat, millet, etc) are rich in carbohydrates and give you instant warmth. Whole grains are also a good source of vitamin B and magnesium, and have some selenium as well. These nutrients are important for the function of the thyroid and adrenal glands – these glands help regulate body temperature, and tend to slow down in cold weather. Legumes such as garbanzo, kidney, black and cannellini beans are sources of proteins. Visit Foodhall to stock up on whole grains and legumes. This food store stocks some of the most exotic imported food products.

Include spinach in your diet

Spinach is a source of iron to keep your energy level up during this season. One cup of spinach contains nearly two dozen nutrients (about 40 calories) that help in everything including

fighting inflammation. If you are bored of palak paneer try interesting recipes like spinach lasagne. For a healthier version, replace white pasta with wholewheat and use skim milk mozzarella cheese. Italia serves vegetarian lasagne but the chef can custom make spinach lasagne just for you.

Salmon and turkey are healthy options

Salmon is high in vitamin D which many people lack during the sunless season. For a healthier option you can replace meat with turkey or extra-lean hamburger. Smoke House Deli serves smoked salmon in its breakfast menu and turkey sandwiches and turkey cold cuts in its all-day dining menu. Take your pick.

Hot peppers and chilli

Hot, spicy foods raise the body temperature by stimulating circulation. Capsaicin, the substance that gives hot peppers their pungent flavour increases

thermogenesis (the process of heat production). What can be spicier than Nando’s famous peri-peri chicken? Also try other flaming hot periperi dishes.

Hot drinks and warm desserts

Eat warm desserts. To make apples into a warm treat for cold days, you need to do a little more than warm them up. De-core the apples, put them in a crock pot and in a few hours you’ll have a warm dessert with no added guilt. Another faster option is to slice the apples, place them on a cookie sheet and heat them at about 149 degrees Celsius in the oven until slightly browned. You can also add them to a bowl, toss in some walnuts and top with low-fat yogurt. Other warm apple desserts like apple pie and apple crumble are equally welcome in this weather. Moving on from hot apple desserts, chocolate desserts are a good option in this weather too. For example, gooey chocolate cake or hot molten lava cake can be teamed with hot drinking chocolate or hot cocoa. Try these variations. Head to Mocha Art House, Big Chill and Chokola for yummy warm desserts and hot drinking chocolate.

Drink green tea

Green tea has two components, caffeine and catechins, that increase thermogenesis by 28 to 77 per cent. Incorporate this nutritional powerhouse in your diet. Try ginger green tea. Ginger has thermogenic properties and is often used as a herbal remedy to boost the digestive and immune systems to keep you nourished and strong, especially in these months. Enjoy a cuppa of relaxing green tea at Market Cafe. lifestylestores.com/ April-June 2014

Six Senses Samui

Why we recommend: Six Senses Samui is set on a gently sloping headland at the northern tip of Samui Island. The resort is made up of just 66 private villas, many with personal pools, which are landscaped within natural vegetation, and with glorious, sweeping panoramas out to the Gulf of Thailand and the surrounding islands. The property offers all the treatments you would expect from a Six Senses Spa, and each one tailored to an individual’s needs. One can choose to have treatments in either air-conditioned individual spa villas or with tropical seabreezes in private salas. Whatever location you choose, you’ll be greeted with a spectacular view across a rock-fringed bay to the Gulf of Thailand. USP: Six Senses Samui has many unique treatments to calm and rejuvenate one’s mind and body. They have a vast menu that is a rare mix of signature Six Senses therapies to locally inspired treatments. While on one hand their signature therapies encourage your worries and stress to melt away, the local Thai healing and pampering treatments help in boosting blood circulation and energy channels. We recommend their Thai Scent treatments that subtly act upon the relevant senses to enhance the feeling of confidence and wellbeing. Where: Six Senses Samui, 9/10 Moo 5, Baan Plai Laem, Bophut, Koh Samui Tel +66 7724 5678 Website: sixsenses.com

Espa at The Istanbul EDITION

Why we recommend: The traditional Turkish hammam, where topless women scrub you down, can get a little ‘too real’ for some. Thankfully, Espa’s new resort marries old-world traditions with modern upgrades (marble slabs, clothed employees!). Expanding over three floors, the stunning and elegant decor boasts rich metallic woods, upholstered walls in exquisite horsehair, sumptuous seating and a contemporary hammam lined with opulent chocolate marble, all creating a distinct sense of luxury and elegance. ESPA at The Istanbul EDITION guests are offered an unparalleled spa experience incorporating beauty, health and wellness in a setting of exquisite luxury. USP: The Signature Hammam combines steam and a menthol salt scrub applied with a textured kese mitt, with body mask and head massage. You will be shocked at how much dead skin comes off and how your bod has never felt silkier. Where: Espa at The Istanbul EDITION, Istanbul, Turkey Website: espaonline.com
