THE SANTIAGO FAMILY

THE SANTIAGO FAMILY The Santiago’s have been living in Madrid, Spain for twelve years and now they want a change. Gabriel has family in Puerto Rico, which helped them make their decision to move to Dorado where they can be closer to family and have a new, fun environment. The family has requested to bring together all of the cultures in their lives. This includes Natalya’s background in Russia, as well as Gabriel’s background from Spain and bringing it all together in their new home of Puerto Rico. Gabriel trades currency to make a living for which he travels quite frequently. He likes to bring back different knick-knacks from his travels and have them on display for his guest to see. Natalya originates from Samara, Russia. She is fluent in three languages; Russian, Spanish, and English. She absolutely loves to cook and entertain guests. Natalya expects her home to be a place to throw a party. She met Gabriel in college at Universidad Complutense de Madrid where they fell madly in love and got married. They now have a 10-year-old girl, Isabella. They call her Isi for short. Isi is the most sophisticated 10-year-old out there. She loves to dance, sing and go shopping with her mother. She absolutely loves fashion and wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up. Being the only child, Isi has her parent’s undivided attention and gets what ever she wants.

CULTURE CULTURE

Puerto Rico is an island rich in history. It has been called a melting pot of different cultures; Taino, European, African, American, and Latin. Even though Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. their lifestyles are very different from the rest of the country. Puerto Ricans are proud of their culture. They are a very lively people who love to party and spend time with their family members. They are not afraid to throw house parties or go bar hopping starting at noon! They will get together and make an event that lasts an entire day, rather then just a few hours. Most people in America live where their job is located but in Puerto Rico it is more important to live near family. Also food is a very important part of their culture. A lot of what they do is centered on good.

COLOR

THE COLOR OF PUERTO RICO Old Town San Juan is a beautiful town filled with color on every building. In Puerto Rico it is very common to see yellows, pinks, greens, white, burnt orange, purples especially in historical sections and rural areas. It is common to have a lot of color used in the exterior and neutrals on the interior. The color seen on the exterior of the buildings may reflect the boldness of the culture in Puerto Rico. The people are known to be very lively and bold. The bright colors seen reflect the people that live and work in those buildings. While they are in their homes they don’t need the same amount of color that would be too much. Inside their homes colors are used in a subtle way through their accessories and the some little details. The tiles they may have in their kitchen or the knick-knacks sitting on their shelves. The most important thing is to reflect their culture.

INSPIRATION STAIRS

STAIR INSPIRATION One of the suggestions from the client was to change the staircase so that it could be more of a social place. Which meant opening up the staircase by getting rid of the walls surrounding it. When looking for inspiration I looked for staircases that not only were open but had a modern look as well. The stairs they had before seemed too traditional for the style that the clients wanted. The picture above inspired me the most for the layout as well as the railing I designed is fairly similar to this. I took pieces for each inspiration and made them unique for the client.

FRESH PERSPECTIVE

This Untitled Arcylic painting was done by Cy Towbly on canvas. The dimmensions are 107 5/8” x 57” The painting was chosen to enhance the cobalt blue found in the Old California Spanish Tile that is on the columns. This mixes contempory art with attique tile, giving the space a unique look.

“I never think that sticking slavishly to one period is successful, a touch of nostalgia adds charm. One needs light and shade because if every piece is perfect the room becomes a museum and lifeless.” ~Nancy Lancaster INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT

WILD LY CO N T E M P O R A R Y

I wanted the study to be a unique room in the house that would stand out against the others. I achieved that by adding funky, wild pieces to the space. I found the pig sculptures first which started the design on good note and became my inspiration. I knew I needed to take some risks with this space. The pink accessories combined with the hide rug on the floor make space very unique. The Mineheart wallpaper is deceiving making the room look more like a library than an office with the fake bookshelves. The wallpaper and the white sheers on the left wall really tie everything into the space. Because much of the wall space was white, it gave me the freedom to use bright pink accessories without dramatizing the space.
