GETTING THE INTERNSHIP I worked in a furniture store the summer before my junior year that sold Caitlin Wilson pillows, which started my interest in her company. I looked up her website and soon fell in love with her style. From that point on I was bound and determined to intern there. In a non-creepy way I stalked CWD on all forms of social media, blogs, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, everything! In January of Jr. year Caitlin Wilson was going to Salt Lake to have a trunk show to sell her pillows. I knew that was going to be my opportunity. I drove down to the trunk show and introduced myself to Caitlin and asked her if she takes interns. Come to find out she did so I got her business card and stayed in contact. After that it was easy. I sent her my portfolio and she hired me with out an interview. The next step was finding a place to live. I thought of every relative I had that lived out of state and I only had a select few. I ended up contacting my grandma’s cousin who lived in Vancouver, WA, which is about 20 minutes from Portland. Surprisingly they said they would love to have me stay at their house with them for free! They offered me one of their spare bedrooms and insisted I eat with them and I wouldn’t need to buy anything. They took me in as if I was one of their daughters and I became part of their family for a short time.

ABOUT CWD C
aitlin Wilson design was started in 2007 by Caitlin Wilson. She has designed spaces from San Francisco to the Cayman Islands. Caitlin is a mother of three children. Her main focus for her company is her textiles. Her husband’s business took them to Asia and the Middle East for a year. Caitlin soon found out getting the high-end fabric she was used to in the states was difficult. This inspired her to start her own fabric line with patterns inspired by her travels around the world. Now Caitlin is known for her colorful and playful patterns used to brighten a room in an affordable way. Caitlin wants to spend, as much time as she can with her young children and because of that interior design is not her main focus right now. She does some small projects and maintains her brand name with her textiles.

WHAT I GOT TO DO M
y internship was not the typical interior design internship. Caitlin only had one design project she was working on at the time, so I didn’t get to really experience much of interior design. Instead, I got to focus a lot on Caitlin’s blog and website. My second week there her graphic designer quit. I had mentioned to Caitlin that I had some experience using Photoshop and Illustrator; so, I was designated as the impromptu graphic designer for the rest of my internship. My main focus was working on a blog series called Design 101. I researched topics to teach the readers how-tos in design. Some topics I worked on were rug sizes, and pillow placement. Other things I worked on included graphic design for email blasts, slides for the website, flyers, postcards for events, social media graphics, etc. I learned how to mimic the style of the previous graphic designer and maintain the Caitlin Wilson brand. I also got to help out at a couple of photo-shoots of Caitlin’s products. I got to help accessorize and style the shoots. Though my internship was not exactly what I expected I still learned a lot about design, just in a different way.

Portland Art musuem- I saved $12 by looking up deals to find out, every 4th friday it was totally free from 5-8.
Nw 23rd street- This was by far my favorite places to go in the city. It’s a street full of nice restaurants and stores that are surrounded by cute little old homes that inspired me by each house I passed. The food!! Portland is known as a “foodie” city. Full of crazy places to eat. From Vodoo Donuts, Blue Star Donuts, Salt & Straw Ice-cream, the food trucks, organic food everywhere.

The Beach- The coast is only about 2 1/2 hours away from where I was staying. So I made some friends and we went surfing on my last weekend.
Seattle- I had never been to Seattle and it was only 3 hours away. So I went on a day trip with my cousin. We left on a Saturday morning and got back very early Sunday morning.I did every touristy thing you could do in a 10 hour time period. It was a blast!
