BOB JONES HIGH SCHOOL PATRIOTS WILL ADJUST TO DEPTH ISSUE BY BOB LABBE
T
he Patriots return 10 starters off the team, which a year ago was 6-5 overall and 3-4 in Class 7A, Region 4. The Patriot boys fell in the first round of the 2018 state playoffs and, for the season, gave up more points than they scored. “We are going to have to play some guys both ways to deal with the depth issues,” said Rose, 49, “but I’m still excited about getting started and coaching this team. They are a close group made up of some very high-character kids.” One of those outstanding character players is one he should know well. Rose’s son Caden returns as starting quarterback and will be called upon to fill in at the safety position more than the 2018 season. The senior Alabama baseball commit will have senior wide receiver Donovan Brown on board as a favorite target for his accurate passes with a slingshot baseball tested arm. Brown, a UT-Martin commit, will also play in the defensive backfield as a two-way player. Brown played defensive back in the last four games, including two starts, in 2018.
8 MADISON COUNTY FOOTBALL 2019
Dylan Ray, who is regarded as the top baseball recruit in Alabama, was one of the main weapons for the Pats on offense last season, but he has opted to sit out the football season and concentrate on baseball for his senior year. Also missing this season is All-State wide receiver John Michael Riley, who graduated. Someone will have to step up and take the lead at running back; several will be called on to take the reins and run to success. Included are Jacob Guyton, Amiyi Maxwell, Deonte Farris and Khali Griffin. As for help when called upon, junior Slate Alford will step in at quarterback in relief for Caden Rose. Alford saw playing time a season ago and is well equipped to handle play calling when necessary. The offensive line, which always has high standards within the program, will again be bolstered by a bevy of talent, including three returning starters. Senior Mike Lucente will be the lead of the troops in the trenches, and he’ll have two juniors alongside to assist in making the blocks: returners center Drew Lawson and Ethan Dawes. Several others are waiting in the wings to take their shot at success. The defense will be headed up by linemen Jehan King and Derrick Weddle. With a handful of linebackers overlooking the defensive line,
the defense should be physical and intelligent. Seniors Walker Styles and Deondre Smith will be designated to cover the entire field and bring havoc to opposing ball carriers at the linebacker position. With both Rose and Brown needed in action more than many coaches would like, the two offensive stars will also anchor the defensive backfield. Also chipping in as a two-way player will be Griffin at corner back. Those three players will receive assistance from some who are anticipated to rise to the level of top-notch performers: seniors Trey Lockhart, Ian Barrier, Connor Cooper, Jackson Burris and Brett Brosnan. Rose said this season he is counting on senior Jacob Fruehwald to handle the placekicking responsibilities. “We must be good on special teams to give ourselves a chance versus a very tough schedule,” added Rose. The Patriots begin their season with a battle against Christian Brothers in Memphis. The Patriots narrowly escaped with a 17-16 victory last season, and the 2019 game is expected to be another gut-check-type contest. Bob Jones will have a revenge motive when facing cross-town rival James Clemens in week three of the campaign. In 2018 the Pats fell to the Jets 39-28 for the first time in the history of the matchup. Last season Bob Jones scored 22 points per outing while allowing 24 per game. “With all three phases contributing, we have to do a good job of holding our opponents to a low score,” Rose added. “I’m looking forward to having a lot of fun with this group.”

quarterbacks to choose from: juniors Connor Cantrell and Chase Starling. “Cantrell was a starter for us two years ago when Muhammad was injured for the entire season, and he can certainly control the offense and throw the ball,” said Wade Waldrop, who is in his seventh season at James Clemens. “Starling is a good athlete and very similar to the talents of Muhammad. He’s an X-factor athlete for us because he can also play running back and tight end for us when we need him to.” The offensive line should be outstanding with five seniors and four of the five starters returning this season. The “big pushers” are led by Zach Taylor. The UAB commit was a First Team All-State selection in 2018 and,

The Jets return 17 starters from the squad that was 7-4 overall and Region 4 champions in Class 7A with a perfect 7-0 region record a year ago. The 2018 squad also defeated archrival Bob Jones for the first team during that campaign – but the season ended much sooner than many expected, as the Jets lost in the first round of the state playoffs. according to Waldrop, is the “name of the team.” “But it’s a group of players up front, is what they really are,” Waldrop added. Seniors Jordan Johnson, Ryan Keepers, Dakota Bell and Chris-tian Brown will lead, with sophomore Edgerrin Watson expected to add depth to the line. Seniors also standing out at running back, with a trio of upper classmen standing tall: Dylan Blackburn, Collin Malone and J.T. Elliott. Dante Snodgrass is a promising sophomore who could explode on the scene if needed. Back with the squad after missing most of the 2018 season with a labral tear of his left shoulder is Chris Baker. Nicknamed “The Gov” by coaches and teammates, Baker was voted as gover-nor of the American Legion Alabama Boys State. Baker is completely healed from his injury and is being
summoned to lead the Jets. Wide receivers include a player Waldrop described as “the most dynamic member of the group from last season” in senior Chris Hope, along with junior Manny Sanders, senior Gary Landrum, junior John August Busch and sophomore Tyrik Walker. While the offense averaged 39 points per game last season, the defense was allowing 24 per outing. Waldrop said the defense must accept its share of the load for the Jets to excel in 2019. With nine starters returning, the defensive squad is being expected to buckle its straps a little tighter against the 2019 schedule. The defensive line has at least six players to fill in gaps when needed. Seniors Lee Coleman, Kimadre Edwards, Tyler Bastow, Tyler Davis and Jerell Mitchell, along with

junior Jaycen Ervin, will be the first line of defense for the Jets. Linebackers will include Tae Strother, Nathan Blanton, Devon Hadaway and sometimes quarterback Starling. “They’ve been in the system for a while and should be on track to have a banner season,” said Waldrop. The defensive backfield should also be into the system with a mixture of seniors and juniors in the lineup. Seniors Tyrone Wilson, John Granger and Collin Malone will develop their leadership, joined by juniors Jaylin Grigsby and D.J. Holden and sophomore Kameron Barnett to make for a secure lineup. The kicking game will be split between brothers Jesse Rowe, who will be the punter and placekicker, and Aaron Rowe, who will take care of kick-off duties. Return men will include Sanders, Hope and Wil-son. “There’s no doubt we have experience, and we have a great opportunity before us. Last season’s ab-rupt end is a point of motivation for this team that has become focused on making a run at the post-season,” said Waldrop. “Our schedule is the toughest I’ve had as a coach, and this season we should know where we are after the first three games.”

on to be the main pass catchers on the team. Dobbs, a dynamic playmaker, finished the 2018 season with 11 catches for 120 yards. The offensive line will be led by Genesis Reedus and Deontez Cunningham. The defensive line will be led by junior Karon White, one of the two returning starters. Last year he had 72 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and four sacks. Senior Gavin Ransaw is the other returning starter, and he will be asked to solidify the defensive line with White. Junior Tyeus Clemens will be asked to step up and become another starter on the defensive line. He had 14 tackles in four games last year. The linebackers will be led by seniors Mackenzie Howard and Tyshun Gaiter. Howard saw action in six games last season, racking up 47 tackles and six tackles for loss. He averaged 7.8 tackles per game. Gaiter saw action in four games and contributed 16 tackles. The defensive backs will be led by senior Khalil Griffin and junior Caleb Ransaw. On special teams, the Senators will be led by kicker Miles Tillman. He will handle place-kicking and punting duties for the team. He finished the 2018 season as a MaxPreps

SPARKMAN HIGH SCHOOL SENATORS LOOK TO IMPROVE AFTER DISAPPOINTING FINISH TO 2018 BY RUSSELL FRYE

Senators enter then finished the season on a five-game losing looking to take streak. They will look to end the losing streak their rebuilding Coach Laron with a team that has no returning starters on offense and two on defense. The Senators lost White. White is entering his third season with 32 seniors to graduation following last season. “We are excited about the season even the Senators. He has guided them to an 11-10 record in his two years: His first year though we lost a ton of starters; we have guys they finished 7-4 with a 5-2 region record that are ready to step up to the challenge,” and a trip to the playoffs, and last year, they said White. “If you can consistently have guys stumbled to a 4-6 record overall and 2-5 in ready and believing, then you start having a region play. adison Academy enters the 2019 season under new leadership: Bob Godsey was hired in late February to take over the program following the departure of Grant Reynolds, who had been the coach of the Mustangs for the previous three seasons. The Mustangs finished their first season in Class 5A with a 10-2 record and a Region 8 championship. They fell in the second round of the playoffs to Central Clay County to end their season. Godsey comes to Madison Academy from Hartselle High School, where he was the head coach for 16 seasons. He left the Tigers as their all-time winningest head coach with a record of 141-51. Before coming to Hartselle, he spent five years at Brooks. His overall record in 21 years as a head coach is 183-66. He inherits a Mustang team that will return four starters on each side of the ball. Five were named to the All-Region team in 2018. “The transition has been smooth thus

far. The players have been super receptive to a new staff, new defense and special teams,” said Godsey. “We have talented players, but we are thin on bodies. Our numbers are not where we want them to be, but that will come with time.” Godsey will look to junior quarterback Avery Seaton to direct the Mustang offense. Seaton became a starter late in the 2018 season following an injury to starter Luke Nail, who has now transferred to Danville High School. Seaton finished the season 51-for-81 for 1,076 yards with 14 touchdowns and two interceptions, while finishing with a QB rating of 135.9. He also finished second on the team in rushing with 546 yards on 84 carries and nine touchdowns. He was named to the 2018 5A Region 8 First Team as an athlete. Senior Slate Rucker returns to lead the wide receiving unit. Rucker finished 2018 fourth on the team in receptions with 16 but second on the team with 404 yards, seven touchdowns and a 25.3 yards-per-catch average. He was named to the 2018 5A Region 8 First Team. Three players are going to be asked to step up this season to strengthen the receiving corps. Senior Clay Pitsinos and sophomore

26 MADISON COUNTY FOOTBALL 2019
Jailen Holmes saw some action last season. Pitsinos played in eight games and finished with 11 catches for 242 yards and two touchdowns, while Holmes played in four games and finished with one catch for 21 yards. Newcomer Tim Spurlock will also see time at receiver. The offensive line will be anchored by two returning starters, Kaden Young and Jay Ingram. The defensive line will be anchored by Ingram, a two-way performer, who was named to the 2018 All-Region team. He finished with 36 tackles last season. A newcomer to keep an eye on will be sophomore Jaylin Arnold, who will be stepping into a larger role on the defensive line. Senior Evan Craighead will lead the linebacking unit. Craighead, who was named to the All-Region team last year, finished with 71 tackles and one sack. Sophomore Chuck Moore will see more playing time this year after limited time last season. The defensive backs will be the most experienced position on the field for the Mustangs. They return two starters, senior Josh Malone and sophomore Tra Stover. Senior Jacobi McBride also saw extensive playing time last season. Malone, who was named to the All-Region team in 2018, finished the season with 46 tackles and two interceptions. Stover finished with 22 tackles and one interception, while McBride finished with 40 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. The Mustangs will have a new kicker in sophomore Andrew Clark. Godsey said he needs to see these questions answered as the season progresses: 1. Who will emerge as leaders for this team? 2. Can we stay healthy enough to make a deep run? 3. With limited numbers, can we be tough enough to make a deep run? 4. Can we be disciplined enough to make a deep run? 5. Can inexperienced offensive and defensive lines develop as the year progresses? Players will need to step up to answer these questions for the Mustangs to make a deep run in Class 5A this season. A LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE The Mustangs open the season Aug. 23 as they host Briarcrest Christian. The two teams have never met. Madison Academy travels to Lawrence County for a week two matchup Aug. 30.
