Several events are planned to help usher in springtime, including an exciting new exhibit at Huntsville Botanical Garden
HUNTSVILLE - Coming in March, a new exhibit will unfold at the Huntsville Botanical Garden: ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN, created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box in collaboration with world-renowned origami artists.
Inspired by the art of folding paper to make elegant objects, ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN transforms simple concepts into large-scale metal sculptures that will find their place among our own plant collections to delight, awe, and inspire.
About the Exhibit
ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN is a monumental outdoor sculpture ex-
hibition. Box takes origami to another level, transforming paper into museum-quality metal sculpture through processes he has pioneered in teamwork with foundries, fabrication shops, and his studio staff.
The exhibit features Box’s own compositions as well as collaborations with world-renowned origami artists Tim Armijo, Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse, and Robert J. Lang. These remarkable artworks feel at home in the wondrous setting of botanical gardens, since paper originates in plant life and origami is made of paper.
“Origami presents a simple metaphor: When we begin with a blank page, what we do with it is up to us
and the possibilities are endless,” said Kevin Box. For more about this exhibt, go to www.hsvbg.org.

HUNTSVILLE – The Dog Ball, one of the area’s most unique, even if tongue-in-cheek, fundraising events, soon will return with a night devoted to man’s best friend.
Complete with a catwalk (uh, make that a ‘runway’) for its stars, The Dog Ball is the major, annual fundraiser for Greater Huntsville Humane Society. The light-hearted event targets a serious cause – needed benefits for the Humane Society’s animal shelter that will help in alleviating expenses associated with care for in-need animals.
The Humane Society operates a no-kill shelter dedicated to the hu-
mane care and treatment animals.
During its 30-year legacy, the Dog Ball has evolved to have corporate sponsorship; silent and live auctions, including the chance to bid on Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show tickets; a showcase of VIDs or Very Important Dogs; and “much more tail-wagging fun,” according to the events website, thedogball.org.
Guests at the fancy dress dinner can meet and pet about 50 local dogs in all shapes, sizes and colors, who hail as pure breed or mixed.
Held at the Von Braun Center’s South Hall on Feb. 4, the Dog Ball will open at 5:45 p.m. with cocktail hour and time to socialize with the VIDs. Dinner starts at 7 p.m., and all
dogs will trot home around 9:30 p.m. Merchandise for the auctions will span numerous categories – from fine artwork to tickets to Huntsville Havoc hockey . . . and, of course, those tickets to the 2024 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Individuals who cannot attend still can bid in the silent auction by buying a ticket and
receiving automatic registration as a Humane Society supporter.
Organizers have selected the slate of VIDs for 2023. For an early view of these heartwarming dogs, visit thedogball.org/thevid.
For tickets, visit thedogball.com and click the “Buy Tickets” button. Individual tickets cost $125 each.

MADISON – Creepy aliens, gangsters, goofy extraterrestrials, oldschool dancing and even cops ‘n robbers will ignite the screen as Madison Public Library reprises its series, “Mad Movie-A-Thon-ORama!”
The free films first were released mainly in the 1950s and 1960s when these flicks were viewed as a fun night at the local walk-in theatre or, better yet, the drive-in. The library staff has announced its schedule for Mad Movie-A-Thon-O-Rama through May.
On the show dates, doors will open at 6 p.m. and the movie reel will start to roll at 6:30 p.m. The audience is welcome to bring food and drink into the auditorium to enjoy a snack (or dinner) during the show.
“Girls, Guns, Gangsters,” will be shown on Feb. 9. This movie is a 1959 crime film starring Mamie Van Doren, Gerald Mohr, Lee Van Cleef, and Grant Richards. In Las Vegas, a group of assorted criminals plans the robbery of an armored truck hauling casino money to the bank.
Next up is “High School Confi-
dential!,” on Feb. 23. This is a 1958 movie where a tough kid comes to a new high school and begins muscling his way into the drug scene. This is a typical morality play of the era, filled with a naive view of drugs, nihilistic beat poetry, and some incredible ‘50s slang.
“Plan 9 From Outer Space,” will be shown March 9. It is a 1957 science fiction-horror film. The storyline concerns extraterrestrials who seek to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe. The aliens implement “Plan 9”, a scheme to resurrect the Earth’s dead. By causing chaos, the aliens hope the crisis will force humanity to listen to them; otherwise, the aliens will destroy mankind with armies of undead.
Other movies include: “Strange Brew,” March 23; “Breakin’,” April 13; “Targets,” April 27; special VHS movie, ‘May the Fourth Be With You’ “Star Wars,”; “Assault on Precinct 13,” May 11; and “Ambush at Cimarron Pass,” May 25.
The library is at 142 Plaza Blvd. For more information, call 256-4610046 or visit events.hmcpl.org.

Hungarian pianist József Balog plays Liszt’s diabolical Totentanz, “Dance of Death,” as well as the tuneful Hungarian Fantasy. Liszt would be pleased to find himself featured alongside his idol Beethoven; we will hear the early Symphony No. 2 and the overture to King Stephen, written to commemorate the founding of the Kingdom of Hungary.
