Couple’s gift will fund Madison Hospital nursery renovation The hospital will be able to accommodate Level II nursery babies that require longer stays By STAFF REPORTS MADISON – Jeannine and James Glover volunteered at Huntsville Hospital for more than 40 years. Now, their legacy will continue impacting Madison County residents for generations to come thanks to a generous planned gift to Huntsville Hospital Foundation. The gift, left in the form of a charitable lead trust, will total an estimated $300,000 and fund a renovation of the Nursery at Madison Hospital. Five hundred babies were delivered at Madison Hospital during its first year of operation. Now, the not-for-profit
hospital is home to 1,500 births annually. In addition to the growth, the way newborns are cared for has evolved. When the hospital opened in 2012, traditional nurseries were built and babies stayed in the nursery throughout their stay. Today, best practices have changed to promote “rooming in”, meaning healthy newborns stay in the mother’s room. Hospital officials said thanks to this change in practice, the renovation and redesign will allow the Madison Hospital Nursery to accommodate Level II nursery babies that require longer stays. This means that babies can also be transferred from the Regional Neonatal ICU at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children for transitional care at Madison Hospital, allowing more time for the baby to grow while providing the care closer to home for the
parents. The new space will feature private bays for each baby and family. “Not only will this renovation expand our capacity, it will also provide a more personal and comfortable experience for families who need a higher level of care while at Madison Hospital,” said Madison Hospital President Mary Lynne Wright. “We are thrilled that this is possible for our growing community, and honored that the Glover family recognized the need to be worthy of the inspiring legacy of Jeannine and Jim. Their gift will truly touch each new life brought into our hospital.” The causes of children and health care were dear to the Glovers. Jeannine worked as a volunteer at Huntsville Hospital for 42 years, serving as President of the Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary from 1991 to 1993 and See GIFT Page 2A

MADISON - March kicks off the severe thunderstorm season in North Alabama and we were reminded of this Sunday night with the threat of severe weather. The threat will continue to grow as we get into April and May. Who can forget the tornado outbreak of last March 2 and 3 with 25 fatalities in Middle Tennessee and 19 of those were near Cookeville in a violent EF-4 tornado that had wind between 170 and 200 miles per hour. There were five people killed in a tornado that moved across north Nashville, it was rated an EF-3. We have a dry and cool weather pat-
tern that is going to set in around late Wednesday and last through the weekend if all goes as planned. Low temperatures will be in the low 30s, but the highs will reach the upper 50s. I am expecting us to get into the 60s again around March 9 through 13. March can produce some very bad weather as spring tries to push winter out of the picture and those large temperature variations with the warm and cold doing battle have produced everything from tornadoes to the blizzard of 93. I will be right here to keep you updated through whatever happens and you can reach me anytime by dropping an email to weather1@charter.net

Bill allows law enforcement to take those in mental health crisis into protective custody By MARY SELL Alabama Daily News MONTGOMERY - A bill working its way through the Legislature would allow law enforcement officers from designated agencies around the state to take people into protective custody if there is “reasonable cause to believe that the individual has a mental illness and is an immediate danger to himself or herself or others.” The individual doesn’t have to be charged with a crime, and the detainment is not an arrest. The hold can last up to 72 hours if not extended by a probate judge. “This is for those acute cases, to get those individuals stabilized in a hospital setting and hopefully get them care,” sponsor Rep. Wes Allen, R-Troy, told the House Judiciary Committee last week. A substitute version of House Bill 284 presented Wednesday to the House Judiciary Committee said the law won’t be applicable in each county until the probate judge and county commission make “a finding that there exists in the county provisions for implementation of this act and the necessary designated treatment facilities to detain persons pursuant to this act.” “It brings everybody to the table to make sure everybody is onboard with this process,” said Allen, a former Pike County probate judge. The bill requires at least one physician and another medical professional to, after consultation with the individual, sign a statement finding that the individual appears to have a mental illness, may be a danger to others or himself and needs further observation. The bill was approved unanimously in committee with bipartisan support. Rep. Chris England, D-Tuscaloosa, said that currently, people experiencing mental health crises may end up in county jails. “The reason that happens is because the state of Alabama overall has failed to take care of our citizens with mental illness,” England said. England said he hopes the legislation gives law enforcement a tool to help individuals get treatment, not housed in jail. Allen’s bill says people in crisis would be transported to health care facilities that have written agreements with counties to provide evaluation, treatment, and care to individuals placed in protective custody. If the individual does not consent to the trans-
Snapshot Students through the schools in Madison used their devices for the National Hour of Chess that was observed last week in Madison City Schools. A fun activity that teaches patience, perseverance, strategy, and critical thinking while also being fun. Promoted by ChessKid, the annual observance began in 2016 in an effort to dedicate one week a year to encouraging chess in every school for at least one hour. port, the officer may use reasonable force necessary to carry it out. Concerns about the bill do exist. James Tucker, director of the Alabama Disability Advocacy Program, said it is a move in the wrong direction. The Legislature last year funded three crisis diversion centers that are now being set up in Mobile, Montgomery and Huntsville. They will be designated places for law enforcement, first responders and hospitals to take individuals experiencing an acute mental health crisis instead of a local jail or emergency room. Tucker praised that effort. “Clearly, what we need in order to provide appropriate care to individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis is crisis and diversion services,” Tucker said. “In other words, medical care, not law enforcement interventions.” In essence, HB284 proposes a mechanism for commitment without due process, Tucker said. “We don’t need to go back to those days,” he said. When someone is experiencing an acute crisis, it should be mental health professionals who respond, Tucker said. “Crisis diversion, which we are now funding in the state, is the way to do it,” he said. “It is not law enforcement led. “There is a mental health center in every county in the state, there are relevant staff that understand how to provide these services in the community. And most if not all counties have local mental health officers.” A spokeswoman for the Alabama Department of Mental Health said the agency is working with Allen and wanted to wait before commenting on HB284. It now goes to the House floor for a vote. A similar bill from Allen was approved by the House last year before COVID-19 upended the session and killed many bills. Allen in 2019 passed a similar law specific to Pike County. Without it, there’s not much law enforcement can do for someone in crisis, unless they commit a crime, he previously said. Similar bills were enacted in Dale, Houston and Barbour counties. Separately, House Bill 16 by Rep. Rex Reynolds, R-Huntsville, would require 16 hours of mental health and crisis intervention training for law enforcement officers in the state. That bill is now waiting for a House vote.
Local law enforcement made multiple drug busts last week By STAFF REPORTS MADISON COUNTY - Multiple Madison County search warrants were executed last week, resulting in a large amount of illegal drugs being seized. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says the first search was done on Lewisburg Drive where nearly four ounces of cocaine was found. Chasie Thompson was arrested for drug trafficking and booked into the Madison County Jail. The second search happened on Virginia Boulevard. Agents found almost 3 ounces of cocaine, marijuana, a firearm and more than $15,000 in cash. Joe Lacy was arrested and booked into the Madison County Jail. In addition, the Huntsville Police Department said officers on their Anti-Crime Team arrested Datraveon Quamar Green, 23, on outstanding warrants for Trafficking
Opium. Green was apprehended by officers after a short foot pursuit and received additional charges for trafficking opium, possession of marijuana 1st degree, and receiving sto-
len property 2nd degree. Officer recovered a stolen 9mm pistol during the arrest, and they also seized 1.4 pounds of marijuana, 17 grams of Opium, and 6,180 in cash.

Excitement builds for “Blush Night 2021” this Friday evening MADISON - It’s been almost one year to the day since the women’s ministry at Building Church, a non-denominational Christian church located on Slaughter Road in Madison, hosted a night just for women. Their last women’s event was Friday, March 13th, 2020, the exact day that the world seemingly began shutting down for what we now know would be much longer than a month or two. But on Friday, March 5th, 2021, Building Church will excitedly swing open their doors for Blush Night and are prayerful and expectant that it will be an evening where busy, tired, hopeful women “will feel invested in, inspired, and encouraged through a fresh perspective and a unique encounter with Jesus.” Women’s Pastor Ellen Beach says that the evening’s theme is “Grow Through What You Go Through”, which serves as a reminder “that we are all going through stuff, some of which is the same as others, but some of it that is very individual.” Beach continued to share that “none of us have arrived at a life without difficulties. None of us are free of those hard parts.” Though Blush Night is held at Building Church, it is not exclusive to women who regularly attend Building Church. In fact, Beach says that that’s far from the case. “You can have no church background at all. There is no dress code. We invite you to simply just come as you are.” She continued to share that “you will laugh, you’ll experience worship, and
you’ll hear an inspiring message that I promise will speak to your heart.” “Everyone always says that they walk away from Blush Night thinking ‘I’m so glad I came’,” she shared. Blush Night Specifics The event is available to women who are local that would like to attend in-person as well as women around the world who would like to attend from the comfort of their living rooms. Whether you’d like to attend in person or online, you can register here (it’s free!). Women who would like to attend in person can expect: • the doors to open at 6:45 p.m. with the event starting at 7 p.m. • coffee to be served and available when they come in • complimentary childcare for children ages 0-5th grade (no pre-registration needed) • a night of meeting new friends, hanging with old ones, engaging worship, and a message by Stacy Henagan (talk about a professional bio as well as a personal story that will knock. your. socks. off!) • sweet treats in the lobby afterward • the opportunity to meet and chat with Stacy Henagan • the opportunity to receive prayer one-on-one after the event • eligibility for giveaways for things such as a spa package, books, coffee, and more Women who attend online can expect: • powerful worship and a live stream of the in-person event online live • eligibility for giveaways for things such a spa package, books, coffee, and more • the opportunity for private prayer over the phone after the event
Pastor Ellen Beach says that “we have people who will be watching from other states who are already registered. If women have family members who are in despair in other states, this is something they could absolutely invite them to attend online.” About the party box… Those who register to attend in-person or online will have the opportunity to purchase an optional party box, which includes a Comfort Colors t-shirt (author note: these are my favorite t-shirts!) and a bunch of other little surprises. Boxes can be picked up on the Sunday morning prior to the event, throughout the week at Building Church, or at the event itself. Pastor Ellen Beach concluded our conversation together by sharing that “our heart is that no matter what your need is, it can be met. If you need a night out, we want to be that safe place that you can come and just be with other adults. We want to create a worshipful atmosphere because we know that women are going to come with exhaustion on their shoulders. We hope that Stacy’s message of journeying through disappointment in the hard places will speak to people’s hearts in the exact way they need to hear.” Masks will be available if you come without one. Registration is required for the in-person event to ensure proper distancing opportunities. To register, go to www. blushwomen.com.

Liberty breaks own record at Alabama All State Choral Festival By GREGG PARKER Gregg.Parker@madison countyrecord.com MADISON – Winning over the competition gives a feeling of fulfillment, but breaking your own record can feel even sweeter. Choir students at Liberty Middle School beat their own record with 23 vocalists earning places at the 2021 Alabama Vocal Association All State Choral Festival. “This is the most students that we have ever had in All-State Choir,” Liberty Principal Shannon Brown said. “Mrs. Alicia Mulloy has gone above and beyond in developing her students during this difficult time. We’re beyond proud of their accomplishments.” To audition, students submitted a virtual or online performance to Alabama Vocal Association. Any student in grades 7-12 enrolled in a school choir class was eligible to audition. “Students had to per-
form seven songs of various styles and languages provided by Alabama Vocal Association,” Mulloy said. “Students were required to perform each song from beginning to end with an instrumental background track.” The following list shows Liberty’s All-State vocalists grouped by vocal part (SATB) and grade: • Soprano – Colleen King and Hannah Lee, eighth. • Soprano 2 – Abigail Holme, Scarlett Pressell, Lauren Clark, Sophie Ava Jones and Ashley Kimberl, seventh. Emily Jolley and Mackenzie Bradley, eighth. • Alto – Kaylee Rodgers, Sarah Stewart, Natalie Strong, Abbygail Watts, Charlotte Alford and Victoria Dow, eighth. Julianna Ballard, Lauren Johnson, Lora Prince and Susie Sorensen, seventh. • Tenor – Brycen Fuller, Alex Lively, Andrew Smith and Christian Wyatt, seventh. Student Charlotte Alford felt excited to qualify
for the choir and said, “I’ll have the opportunity to sing with the state’s best singers at the All State Choral Festival in April.” Sophie Ava Jones was “happy. I almost started crying when ‘Mrs. M&M’ told me I made it.” Mulloy was proud to see results from the vocal association. “I was confident in my students because I knew how hard they worked to prepare for this audition,” Mulloy said. Auditioning online was a new experience but positive because “you can do as many ‘re-do’s’ as needed until you have the perfect recording to submit. Also, you don’t have the pressure of a judge and other auditionees staring at you as you sing.” “The hours invested, on the director’s part, ensuring correct video submissions by the deadline was a bit overwhelming (correct video/audio format, video submitted to proper place on audition website, parent-signed documents turned into the website
Judges selected these students at Liberty Middle School for the All State Choir at the 2021 Alabama Vocal Association All State Choral Festival. on time). It’s a lot of pressure knowing that a really great singer could potentially not make the choir because his/her mic was on mute during the recording or the video uploaded incorrectly,” Mulloy said. The All-State Choir will present a concert at the Von Braun Center on April 27. Students will work with a guest clinician all day to perfect the
seven songs that they prepared for auditions. At Liberty since 2018 as Director of Choral Music, Mulloy has taught beginning choir, tenor/bass choir, virtual choir and soprano/alto choir. “This year has been extremely difficult for Liberty Choir due to safety precautions we’re taking per COVID-19. We are not singing inside. Outside (weather permitting), we
are spaced out so far (that) we can’t hear one another,” Mulloy said. “I’m so proud of these students for their dedication, hard work and not giving up on choir. With the support of our administration, choir parents and our passionate choir members, we have found a way to continue to strive for excellence through these troubling times. I am truly blessed,” Mulloy said.
Girls Scouts wish a happy day to elderly By GREGG PARKER Gregg.Parker@madison countyrecord.com MADISON – Local Girl Scouts showed their compassion for elderly citizens by relaying happy greetings on Valentine’s Day. The Girl Scouts of Service Unit 212 in Madison made and distributed more than 300 Valentine’s Day cards for senior citizens in the Tennessee Valley. Girls from five to 18 years old designed handmade cards to bring love and joy to the residents, according to Brandan Newman, Troop Leader for Troop 21216 in Madison. The outreach for well-wishing for the Valentine’s holiday led Girl Scouts USA to create a national service project called “Cupid Crew.” National officials challenged Girl Scouts across the country to create Valentine cards for senior citizens
in their communities. Scouts gave their cards to six retirement homes in Madison, Athens and Huntsville. These facilities included Traditions of Athens, Merrill Gardens, The Range, Heritage Assisted Living and Morningside of Madison. About 50 girls in Service Unit 212 of Girl Scouts participated from six troops in Madison. To craft their project items, the girls used various colors and textures of construction paper, scrapbook pages, stickers, decorative paper ornaments, crayons, pens, colored pencils and ink markers. Saoirse Newman, a Daisy Girl Scout in Troop 21216, designed one traditional greeting card of red construction paper, decorated with a heart-shaped cutout of a bouquet of pink rosebuds. For another design, Saoirse used lavender paper cut into a heart design with bright,
rainbow stripes along the edges. By joining in this outreach effort, “The girls learned how to bring joy to those who have been isolated during the pandemic,” Newman said. Saoirse summed up the feelings for herself and fellow Scouts by saying, “Giving is nice.” On the cards, the girls wrote thoughts, such as “Happy Valentine’s Day, Dear Friend” and “I hope you have a great day.” Along with other phrases of love and encouragement, a few girls wrote their own poems. Because of social distancing constraints, the Scouts had to leave their cards at the facilities’ front doors with an administrator. “None of the homes were allowing any visitors at all,” Newman said. For more information about Girl Scouting in Madison County, visit girlscoutsnca.org.

tional Air Force JROTC. “Kitty Hawk encourages and recognizes academic excellence and is the military’s equivalent to the high school’s National Honor Society,” Maj. Dr. Melissa M. Lacey said. As Senior Aerospace Science Instructor at Bob Jones, Lacey coaches the Elite Knight recruits and CyberPatriots teams. “We provide active service to our school and community. We promote self-confidence and initiative, while building the cadets’ leadership abilities,” Lacey said. “Conjointly, we further members’ knowledge of the Air Force role in aerospace, as well as educational development in the post high-school years.” “With such a high caliber of cadets in AFJROTC, I decided to form a KHAS at Bob Jones to recognize and promote our out-
standing students. This inaugural class consists of four juniors and seven seniors. Our chapter is proudly named the ‘Elite Knights,’ in relation to the cadet corps’ moniker, ‘Blue Knights,’” Lacey said. The pledge period included memorization of KHAS’ key components and “providing an opportunity for cadets to complete activities that demonstrate the cadets’ character and dedication to the core values,” Lacey said. The induction ceremony for Elite Knights – Kitty Hawk Air Society was held on Feb. 23 an Zompa Auditorium at Bob Jones. Each cadet will now wear the KHAS ribbon on his or her uniform, along with a blue rope. Membership in KHAS requires a 3.0 unweighted grade point average and
a 3.5 weighted GPA. In addition, cadets must have completed two semesters of AFJROTC and currently participate in either the program or stay on reserve status. The Elite Knights KHAS staff includes Shaniya Lanier, who will serve as KHAS Commander; Jackson Ford, KHAS Vice Commander; Quincy Amacher, Administrative Officer; and Caleb Johnson, Financial Officer. The other nine members include Sydney Baumbach, Brandon Clark, John Digges, Ethan Fury, Hannah Hazelwood, Ethan Horne, Nick Kim, Melody Spivey and Abigail Warren. “These cadets will now be known as the charter members of the Elite Knights and will become a part of Bob Jones High School AFJROTC history,” Lacey said.

MADISON – Volunteers have chosen the top-ranking students who entered the 2021 Reflections Fine Arts Contest, an initiative of the National PTA. “We’re proud of all our winners and are happy to celebrate their talent, creativity and self-expression through the arts with the Reflections program,” 2021 Madison coordinator Julie Streling said. “Thank you to the volunteers who chaired the program at their respective schools and to the judges who took time out of their busy schedules to participate,” Streling said. “This year was challenging because we had to collect entries digitally. Photos or digital files were submitted rather than artwork itself.” Creating from the theme, “I Matter Because,” students’ top entries at each school advanced to the city level, where judges determined overall winners for Madison City PTA. City winners advanced to Alabama State PTA. First-place winners appear first in this list, followed by subsequent winners. The list also includes the student’s grade:

MADISON – Long before the curtain opened for “Matilda the Musical” and actors took their cues, a behind-the-scenes group of designers, carpenters and construction workers known as the technical crew or ‘techies’ were crafting the show’s atmosphere at James Clemens High School. “Creating the tech (technical staging) for ‘Matilda’ has been rather challenging over the last 1.5 years. (Many) student technical leaders graduated and were therefore unavailable for this year’s production,” Technical Director Clint Merritt said. Merritt teaches technical theatre at James Clemens. In addition, Merritt and Director Amy Patel didn’t know until mid-January if the company with production rights would allow an indoor, live performance.
“The entire year we forged ahead as if we would be allowed to do a show with the hopes that something would pan out. We’ve now had three different semesters worth of students working on this show in various capacities,” Merritt said. “Our student leadership team wasn’t announced until January, because we had to see who would still be in advanced technical theatre class,” he said. “Our tech crew also was negatively affected by (many) quarantines. Weeks before the show opened, we lost an entire one-third of our advanced technical theatre class for a full two weeks.” “The silver lining has been that we’ve been afforded a lot longer to work on the show and focus on details we haven’t been able to focus on in the past. We open (March 4) but only started seeing full run-throughs (in mid-February) because of our

By BOB LABBE bob0873@yahoo.com MADISON - Chad McGehee has been officially named the third head coach in the short history of the James Clemens football program. The 44-year old was named the new head coach at the Madison City Schools Board Meeting and was introduced at the school he will soon call home. McGehee arrives at James Clemens from Hoover where he was defensive coordinator the last three seasons and replaces Wade Waldrop, who exited the position to take over the similar spot at Florence High. “Taking this job is more than just as a coach as I looked at the
Madison area for its schools and academics, community and everything involved and I’m excited about the move and look forward to the challenge of keeping this fine program continuing to move to the elite,” said McGehee. The 44-year old has been as assistant coach for 17 years and four years as a head coach after playing college football at Alabama 1995-1998 under Alabama legends Gene Stallings and Mike Dubose. While he played in the defensive backfield for the Crimson Tide, he did so under the guidance of defensive coach Bill Oliver and has taken what he learned from his experiences with him to his own style of coaching. “I look to create a family at-
mosphere and want these players, just like my own kids, to become the best version they can be,” said McGehee, who played safety and wide receiver at Southside-Gadsden High as a team captain and actually signed with Samford before moving to Tuscaloosa for college. “I teach the fundamentals of everything surrounding football and how to handle adversity. I’m going to push them, have standards and be demanding to have love and trust for each other.” McGehee is married to his wife, Amy, and they have two children, Brett, 16, and Clayton, 12. Brett plays tennis while Clayton is a swimmer. He said his main hobby is to study football and does so by traveling to visit
colleges and meet with college coaches. “We are very excited to have Coach McGehee as our head coach of football and we believe that he is an excellent football coach and a molder of young men,” said Brian Clayton, principal of James Clemens. “He will be a definite asset to the community and we are happy to welcome him and his family.” McGehee was one of among 54 applicants for the position. McGehee expects to start his duties at James Clemens by March 8 and will quickly jump into his duties as head coach as he will open spring football practice by the end of April with conclusion sometime during May.

MADISON - The project improving the athletic facilities at James Clemens High School has been ongoing since the school opened in 2012 becoming Madison City Schools’ second upper division school. The long awaited success of the efforts are nearly completed as the football field and track were upgraded to artificial turf a year ago and now the man-made turf has also been installed on both the baseball and softball fields. “The newly installed artificial turf on our field will help in keeping games on schedule due to rain that usually wreaks havoc during our seasons,” said Johnny Johnson head baseball coach at James Clemens. The total cost of renovations on both fields is nearly $400-thousand. Madison City Schools provided an estimated $27-thousand to the project while the two sports programs provided a $50-thousand down payment then took out a loan from Madison City Schools for the remainder of the funds. The project monies will be paid through tournaments held at the JetsPlex, as well as, league play and practice rentals. “Baseball already has nine tournaments on the calendar for the upcoming summer, as well as, hostSee FIELDS Page 2B
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Saturday to open play on the new turf baseball field at James Clemens.
The James Clemens baseball program will have a brand new field to play on in 2021 with an artificial turf infield and bullpen areas. The overall athletic renovations included some artificial turf areas for the girls’ softball field.

All-State volleyball player Joy Robinson signs scholarship with Albany State By BOB LABBE bob0873@yahoo.com MADISON - Team Most Valuable Player, Area Most Valuable Player and Class 7A First Team All-State volleyball player Joy Robinson has completed her playing time with the Bob Jones Patriots and has signed an athletic scholarship with Albany State of Georgia. The senior celebrated her signing with family and friends in a ceremony at her school. “Albany State coaches really showed interest in me when they first reached out to me when I was a junior,” said Robinson. “I loved the fact they made feel wanted and their transparency about everything involved as I had to decide between three schools for my choice of college and Albany State stood out.” Robinson completed three years
of varsity play for the Patriots with 395 sets participated in and posting 643 kills, 633 digs, 96 aces and 243 blocks. The 5-foot-9 athlete was introduced to volleyball in the seventh grade and she quickly developed a passion for the sport and her efforts of wanting to play well with a shot at college athletics. To assist in obtaining a college education is her skills in the classroom as she carries a 4.52 grade point average. “I’ve always been kind of nerdy as I was really into academics, always reading,” said Robinson, who once was chosen to speak to the Alabama Senate while she was in the fifth grade. “I’m not an aggressive person, but had to coral the physical aspects of the sport to get that mental state needed to excel in the sport I love.” Robinson was presented the Bob Jones High School Heisman
Award for her outstanding athletic achievements and her continuous volunteer work at her church and the public library. She once attended a musicology school where she took voice and piano lessons, but her true passion has been volleyball, her ticket to a college education where she wants to earn a degree in accounting. Robinson was born in San Diego, Cal. to Corey and LaTonya Robinson. Her family moved to Madison when Robinson was a mere seven years old. Albany State is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and participates in the NCAA Div. II. Robinson looks forward to completing her senior year at Bob Jones, packing her volleyball bags for Albany, Ga. and start the next chapter in her life that has been rewarding in different ways.

PENSACOLA - The No. 15 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up a second straight series win, this time in dramatic fashion as the Chargers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 7-6 win over West Florida. UAH is now 9-3 (4-2 Gulf South Conference), while UWF falls to 9-5 (4-2 GSC). Game Changer -After falling behind 6-1 early, the Chargers clawed all the way back and in the bottom of the seventh – UAH was the home team this weekend in Pensacola – Reagan Malone would double in the tying run before scoring the winning run on a passed ball to give the Chargers the victory. Inside the Box Score -The Chargers outhit West Florida by a 13-6 margin in the game. -Kiara Akles finished the contest going 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead UAH offensively. -Each of Shelby Booker, Mackenzie Nutt, and Lila Young had a two-

Warner’s is one of the most respected construction firms in the United States. Installed was Shaw B1K Turf, which is similar to the turf already installed on the football/soccer field. The artificial surface is manufactured using a combination of sand, rubber and safe shell. The turf is regarded as the closest to natural grass. The baseball field has artificial turf on the grass portion of the infield and foul ball areas and in

Key Plays -West Florida opened the scoring in the first with a run before using a pair of homers to aid its effort in scoring five times in the second to go up 6-0. -Hampton’s two-bagger in the bottom half of the second would score Akles and make it a 6-1 game, and the score would remain that way until the fifth when Akles singled in a run to pull UAH within three at 6-2. -UAH would chip away further in the sixth when Ashley Cornell singled in the team’s third run before Akles knocked in a pair on an base hit to right center, cutting the Blue and White’s deficit to just one run. -In the seventh, Young would start
the inning off with an infield single before moving to second on a Gracie Green sacrifice bunt, and that allowed Young to score when Malone doubled. -An error allowed Cornell to reach and pushed Malone up to third, and she would score on a passed ball two batters later to give UAH the win. Noteworthy -O’Berry gets the victory – her second of the season – following her most dominant outing of the year. -Akles move to second on the team with 16 RBI on the year, and she is now batting .436. -This is UAH’s first true walk-off since Feb. 15 of last season when the team scored four times in the seventh to beat Delta State 7-5. -UAH has now won seven of its last nine meetings with the Argos. Next Time Out -UAH stays in conference action this weekend, traveling to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers. Saturday’s doubleheader to start the series is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
both home and visitor bullpens. Natural grass remains in the outfield with new infield soil professionally mixed to handle excessive play and moisture during times of rain. New dugout rails and padding were also installed. The softball complex will feature artificial turf in foul ball areas dugout to dugout and in both bullpen areas. The softball field will remain all natural grass, but new soil for the home plate area was brought in from the baseball field. A good portion of money appropriated to softball was utilized on the team’s practice field renovations. Warning tracks on both fields
were also expertly reworked. The practice fields for both teams also received recent renovations, but remain all natural turf. “The business plan for the project is the construction costs will be paid back over the years and also allow us to eliminate our efforts of chasing money donations on a continuous basis,” added Johnson. The renovations match the programs at Bob Jones High as both fields hosting the Patriots at the crosstown high school already have artificial turf installed two years ago. It’s now easy to compare both schools, at least from the standpoint of playing on equal playing fields.

Lisenby sets new home-run record for Bob Jones softball By BOB LABBE bob0873@yahoo.com MADISON - There’s a new name among the record books of the Bob Jones softball program. Aubrie Lisenby, an Auburn signee and starting catcher for Bob Jones, now holds the record for most career homeruns after belting her first homer of the season in the fourth game of the 2021 schedule giving her 29 in her career with the Patriots moving her atop the list of career homers in team history. The previous mark of 28 was held by Sydney Booker, who graduated from Bob Jones in 2014 and played four years for the University of Alabama. “It feels great,” said Lisenby about her setting the record. “This is not just for me, but the entire team.” Whitney Deaver, in her fifth season as head coach of the Patriots, said Lisenby’s accomplishment doesn’t surprise her. She added, “She works hard and outworks others on the team. She is a perfectionist and has spent hours and hours hitting. She is very vocal and leads by example.” The 5-foot-7, 140-pound Lisenby began playing softball at age six at Palmer Park in Madison. She has perfected her skills through years of efforts including receiving expert coaching from as far away as Atlanta. She has made the trek to the Georgia city every Sunday for the past two years to work with standout hitting coach Lincoln Martin. “He has taught me the correct techniques on generating
power at the plate and to improve my bat speed,” added Lisenby. The power also comes from extensive weight lifting workouts five to six days a week under the eyes of trainer Derrick Baudy of Huntsville. In reality, Lisenby came within inches of setting the homerun record a year ago. She hit a long curving liner down the foul line at the foul pole for what looked like a dinger and the record. Umpires deemed the ball curved foul just prior to making the pole, thus keeping Lisenby from gathering in the record as a junior. It was right after that near record blast the season was shut down due to the pandemic. She has had to wait almost an entire year before being able to finally hit one out of the park for the record books. For Lisenby success has not come without struggles. At the completion of her freshman season she had reconstruction shoulder surgery in Birmingham and was away from softball for 10 months. At the beginning of last season she suffered a fractured right wrist, but was able to play much of the 2020 campaign while having her wrist heal. With the schedule cut short, she was able to continue to heal in time for the summer league play to begin. Lisenby has a 4.34 grade point average, which ranks her No. 34 among the senior class at Bob Jones and will study science upon arriving at Auburn with concentration on pre-med studies. She signed an athletic scholarship with the Tigers with her dream of playing college softball.
Bob Jones senior catcher and slugger Aubrie Lisenby has belted her way to a career team record by hitting homerun No. 29 in the fourth game of the current season. The Auburn signee broke the previous record that was set in 2014.
Former Jets standout is “player to watch” at Belmont University NASHVILLE, TENN.- Once regarded as the “rock” of the James Clemens High baseball program before he graduated in 2018, Tommy Crider is now one of the young stars of the Belmont University Bruins, the Div. I Ohio Valley Conference program based in Nashville. The athletically sophomore multi-position player has been named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s “Top Players to watch in the OVC” pre-season list. “I came in as a freshman and was very happy with the opportunity to play as I started about two-thirds of the season, mostly as designated hitter,” said Crider from his room at Belmont. “Then last year, which was cut short by COVID, I played well and I look forward to this season.” Due to the pandemic, players were allowed to keep their seasons eligibility by the NCAA thus 2021 is Crider’s sophomore season déjà vu. He hit .238 with 15 hits, three homers and 15 RBIs a year ago. He played mostly first base starting all 17 games of the Bruins who were 14-3 when the season was stopped. Last April he underwent hip surgery to repair a torn labrum, which he injured while in high school. He played through the pain as much as possible until making the decision to have the injury revamped in preparation for the current season. Crider, son of Andrew and Cynthia Crider, began playing baseball by age five at Madison’s Palmer Park. Most of his time was playing catcher where Crider always felt the position was his first love as being a catcher was always a pivotal part of the entire game seeing how the defense works and helping with the pitchers and how they approach each batter. In high school, he was an All-State selection for the Jets. Crider is studying nursing and hopes
to venture into the anesthesia area of the medical field while he carries a 3.56 grade point average into his twice-aweek schedule of hands-on clinics. Due to his enormous class schedule, Crider has been forced to miss several practice sessions with the baseball team, but has interesting stories on how he makes the baseball field from the nursing clinics without missing a beat. “I’ve numerous times finished clinic, grabbed my uniform, change clothes when and where I can and sprint to the field,” said Crider. “There was one time when my roommate drove me to our game at Morehead State of Kentucky. The frenzy sets off sparks in your brain and I seem to keep things together.” Having a medical degree fits right in with Crider who seemed to be connected to the medical field in an unusual way since age four. He and his older brother were in their car with their mother. After both children were taken out of their car seats, the young Crider, in his energetic way, took off on a sprint across the parking lot of the Baptist Church across the street from Madison Elementary School in downtown Madison. That day it was raining and upon his over-eager sprint fell to the pavement. A car was traveling through the lot and was unable to miss the young toddler and ran over his legs. He was rushed to the hospital and was lucky to receive just minor injuries and no permanent, long-lasting damage. Besides his play for the Bruins and the grind of attending school, Crider also volunteers in local hospitals and helps package meals for the homeless. “I’m excited about this season, as we were picked to finish first in the conference with seven starters returning off last year’s team,” said Crider. “I’m healthy and look forward to the competition which is much more talented than my years at James Clemens. The game will speed up on you if you’re not careful.”

Life-lessons gained from high school wrestling By BOB LABBE bob0873@yahoo.com MADISON - To be a high school wrestler takes an enormous amount of fortitude as mental strength is just as important as physical brawn. The gut-wrenching sport teaches lessons in life that will last a lifetime and installs the necessary confidence and discipline needed to be successful in adulthood. “The sport teaches self-confidence and to have respect in yourself,” said Matthew Sweatman head coach of the Bob Jones wrestling team. “A high school wrestler has to be willing to be a part of something bigger than yourself.” Kevin Pecor, head coach
of the wrestling program at James Clemens, said the sport translates to life as wrestling preps you for wins and losses in life. He added, “I’ve seen kids when they came out for the sport who were so timid they were scared of their own shadow.” Not only does a wrestler have to be strong and quick, they must be thinkers who are mentally sharp and prepared for any move an opponent may make. The sport features constant motion both mentally and physically. The pure struggle within an athletes’ confidence can be the deciding factor if a wrestler is successful and can carry their work ethics elsewhere in life. Drew Lawson, senior
at Bob Jones, who just finished runner-up in the 285-pound division at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 7A State Wrestling Tournament, had on-going internal struggles to keep his weight through a ferocious schedule that included physical training and following a strict diet that included a total daily intake of 4,000-9,000 calories. Sebastian Davis finished his junior season of wrestling for the James Clemens Jets with a top five finish in the 160-pound weight class at the State Tournament, was many times forced to cut weight to make matches. Davis said of his experiences, “Going through all of that and the tough nature of the sport taught me I can get through it as
hard times in the sport can be overwhelming, but the sport helped me figure things out. Wrestling is more than a sport. It taught me to depend on myself and fine-tuned my problem solving skills.” The sport is not for the faint of heart. Injuries do occur as Lawson suffered a season-ending knee injury during a match in 2019. He underwent surgery and faced the challenges of making a return to the mats. “The sport taught me I can push farther than I thought I could,” said Lawson. “With my teammates, we pushed one another as a unit.” An extensive look into the world of high school wrestling will be available in the upcoming March issue of the Madison Living Magazine available throughout Madison.
High school wrestling can teach a young student-athlete more than just the correct moves for victory on the wrestling mat as the sport digs deep into an athletes’ mental state that will carry over to adulthood and every day aspects of life. Photo by Joshua Berry

MADISON- Jake and Joe Palenapa are fraternal twins and like most twins have followed each other through an array of projects, sports and school. The seniors at Bob Jones just completed their final season on the Patriots’ swim team and now will follow their dreams of flying jet planes as they will attend the Air Force Academy. “Being at the Air Force Academy is the best place to be as I want to be in the air as a pilot and I plan on having a career in the military,” said Joe, younger twin by one minute. “I’ve always been fascinated by planes as our family used to fly to Hawaii several times to visit family,” said Jake. “When our parents found out we both wanted to be pilots they said we could fly them out to Hawaii.” As seniors, the twins helped the Bob Jones swim team to a seventh place finish at the 2020 Alabama High School Athletic Association’s State Swim Meet. Joe handled the 200-meter freestyle and 100m butterfly events while Jake concentrated on the 200m IM and breastroke races. Both participated in the boys 200m and 400m freestyle relays.
They were selected as team captains and received the equal amount of votes from team members. “They were two of the best overall student-athletes I have ever coached,” said Wade Thaxton, head coach of the Bob Jones swim program. Heading into the final weeks of the 2020-2021 school year, Joe has a 4.8 grade point average that ranks him No. 20 in the Patriots’ senior class while Jake has a 3.96 GPA and No. 23 among the seniors. Joe was also accepted to West Point, but knew the Air Force is what his future should be contrived of. Both have been part of the ROTC program at Bob Jones and serve on the ROTC Honor Guard. “Swimming is what I do and many coaches at Bob Jones and with the Madison Swim Association have led me physically to be better and I was pretty decent at the strokes in the pool,” said Joe. Jake added, “I wasn’t the best starting out, but I stuck with it and I was with friends and through everything we go through as swimmers we became a swim family.” The Palenapa twins are well-rounded young men as Joe can play the piano while Jake is proficient in playing the violin and self-

What do you need to leave behind to follow God? By BECKY MILLER God’s Lemonade Stand “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? Luke 9:23-25
It’s time for an easy Irish boil By CHRISTY JORDAN Southernplate.com
A lot of families like to have special meals for St Patrick’s Day. Me, I like a good Reuben for lunch. Well, that is any day though. I’m pretty sure I could eat a Reuben every day of the week and not get tired of it. I could also eat an entire skillet of fried cabbage by myself if given half the chance. But I digress…Today I am bringing you a simple recipe for a complete St Patrick’s Day dinner which you can make on your stovetop or slow cooker (crock pot). A meal in one where you dump the ingredients and turn the heat on – how easy is that? You’ll need: carrots, onion, cabbage, new potatoes, pickling spice, and a brisket. A word about sizes: It doesn’t matter how much of each vegetable you use or even how large your brisket is in this recipe, as long as you can fit it all into your pot. I try to get small new potatoes for that very reason. In case you’d like to know, my corned beef is just a little over 3 pounds. The takeaway here: make sure you start out with a pot big enough to hold everything. Mine is six quarts and it just barely does the job. Place your corned beef in the bottom of a large pot and sprinkle the seasoning packet that comes with it on top. Add another tablespoon or so of pickling spice. Why are we adding pickling spice, Christy? Well, basically that’s what that seasoning packet that comes with corned beef is. All we are doing is adding a bit more to amp up that flavor and get the cooking water infused enough so that it flavors the vegetables as well. Now, cover this with water and bring just to a boil. Once it comes to a boil reduce heat slightly (there should still be light bubbling) and cook for 2-3 hours. If you are cooking this in a crock pot: Place corned beef, seasoning packet, and pickling spice in slow cooker. Complete steps below for vegetables and THEN add enough water to cover. Place lid on slow cooker and cook on low, 7-8 hours or high, 3-4. Quarter your onion (okay, I cut a few more times than four but you get the point), and cut your cabbage into big old wedges. This is the part where I get all nibbly because I love raw cabbage almost as much as I love cooked cabbage! Place all of your veggies in the pot with the cooked corned beef. Hopefully, you have a big enough pot for them to go in at this point. If not, don’t say I didn’t warn ya :). Bring this back up to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring every now and then, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced by a fork. Carefully remove corned beef from pot and slice it as thinly as you can. An electric knife works wonderfully for this. My corned beef is not sliced anywhere near thin enough in these pictures but I don’t have the patience for that so I just put steak knives at everyone’s place setting and tell them I wanted to give them more in-
Have you ever taken stock of your life when you call yourself a Christian to see what you would say to someone to ‘prove’ it? It’s not about good works or going to church or even being baptized but is a heart condition. When you love someone you want to to do great things for them and can’t get enough of being with them. If you are a true follower of the Lord you want to shine for Him and know more about Him not just say you are a Christian giving no thought about what it entails. Is there any thing you need to do or not do to draw closer to God? PRAYER: I yearn to be closer Father and would rather be a doorkeeper in your house than a King elsewhere. I want to press in and stop making excuses for why I only give you five minutes, if that, a day. I will not allow the enemy to distract me. In Jesus’ name. Amen. teraction with their food :). Add veggies around the beef to serve. Enjoy! Ingredients • Corned Beef 3-4 pounds • New Potatoes • Baby Carrots Or whole carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped • Onion • Cabbage • Pickling spice Instructions Place corned beef in large pot. Pour seasoning packet over top (they usually come with one). Add an additional 1 tablespoon of pickling spice over this. Cover completely with water and bring just to a boil over medium high heat. Once it reaches a boil, reduce heat slightly (You want it to still bubble) and allow it to cook for 2-3 hours, adding more water if necessary to keep beef covered. After beef is fully cooked and tender (at least two hours) peel and quarter onion and cabbage. Place both in pot with beef along with potatoes and carrots. Continue cooking for another 30 minutes or until potatoes are fork tender. To serve, slice corned beef very thin and place on platter alongside veggies.
Notes It is up to you how much of each vegetable you use in this recipe. More or less won’t affect the recipe, as long as they all fit in your pot. If you are cooking this in a crock pot: Place corned beef, seasoning packet, and pickling spice in slow cooker. Peel and quarter onion and cabbage and add on top of corned beef along with potatoes and carrots - THEN add enough water to cover. Place lid on slow cooker and cook on low, 7-8 hours or high, 3-4. MADISON - The house at 314 Church Street in Madison was initially built by Fred Wann upon a lot with dimensions of 64 ft. by 227 ft. by 69 ft. by 227 ft. This parcel of land is in the northwestern part of the two-acre southern half of four-acre Lot 4 (aka Lot 104). The two-acre southern portion of Lot 4 was purchased by Samuel Williamson Balch in 1905 from the heirs of Madison pharmacist John Winston Burton. The Balch purchase of two acres stretched from the east side of Church Street to today’s west side of Sturdivant Street, measuring 178 feet north-to-south and 475.8 feet east-to-west. Samuel’s house was located at 312 Church Street on the southwestern portion of his two-acre purchase. John Burton’s wife Mary had bought the entire four-acre parcel on the south side of today’s Mill Road and on the east side of Church Street (extending to today’s Sturdivant Street) from Dr. Isaac Fox Deloney, who in turn had purchased the land at the 1868 auction of the residual holdings of the estate of James Clemens, the Founder of Madison. In 1916 Samuel Williamson Balch for $300 sold a one-third acre parcel out of his 2-acre lot. This became 314 Church Street, sold to Ora Barnard Wann (1883-1978), the wife of Fred Jackson Wann (18831971). Ora was Madison’s longest-serving postmaster, from 1915 to 1948. Fred sometimes also worked in the post office. In the 1940 census, Fred was listed as the assistant postmaster, but in the 1930 census his occupation was shown as a clerk in a grocery store. The 1920 census showed that he had no occupation at that time. While Fred was reported to be the builder of the house at 314 Church Street, he apparently tried his hand at many things. Sometimes his work or debt settlements were apparently a bit complicated, as he had ten judgments against him listed in the land deed index from a variety of businesses in the period of 1915 through 1917. This was when Fred was in his early 30’s of age. Such circumstances may have been why Ora was the one who entered into all of their land transactions during their marriage. In spite of difficulties with judgments against him, Fred and Ora Wann were well-connected and respected members of the Madison community. Fred was a son of Andrew Jackson Wann (18451915) of Woodville in Jackson County. The known occupations of Andrew were farmer, postmaster, schoolteacher, merchant, and Primitive Baptist elder and preacher in the Union Church of Woodville. Fred’s mother was Inda Bowers, Andrew’s See HISTORY Page 8B

History
Continued from page 7B first wife. After Inda’s passing, Andrew married Susan Kennamer and had only one child (Ruth, died young) by Susan. By Inda, Andrew had several other children, including Fred’s brother William, who also moved to Madison from the family’s homeplace in Woodville. Nora Wann, a sister of Fred and William, in 1897 married Dea T. Thomas, who became a merchant in Madison, as noted by his name prominently displayed over the front door of his store at 206 Main Street to this day. Fred’s brother William had children Vivian and William Barclay Wann. Vivian Wann married J. C. Vaughn in 1938, while William B. Wann (1911-2003) married Sarah C. Farley (1916-2003) in that same year. William and Sarah Farley Wann’s daughter Sarah Gayle Wann married dentist Ron Guy of Huntsville. Sarah Gayle and her brother William have, since their parents’ deaths, been the owners of the land around the Farley – Crutcher Cemetery south of Old Madison Pike and east of Shelton Road, where a number of their ancestors are buried. Sarah Gayle and Ron built the log cabin replica structure that still stands in the field east of Shelton Road as a new housing development is underway north of the railroad tracks. Fred Jackson Wann’s wife Ora Barnard succeeded three different members of the Gewin family as Madison postmasters who served successively as from 1875 to 1915. Ora Barnard was born in 1883 in Valley Head of DeKalb County, Alabama. She and Fred were married in Paint Rock of Jackson County on June 14 of 1905 by James O. Bledsoe, a Minister of the Gospel. Fred and Ora now rest together in the Union Cemetery of Woodville, near the railroad tracks that run through both Madison and Woodville, Fred’s ancestral homeplace. It is a large and beautiful old cemetery dating from 1834 and nestled between hills or small mountains in a serene rural valley distant from houses. Ora’s father was Franklin Cooper Barnard (1854-1934). He is buried in the Madison City Cemetery’s new section north of Mill Road near Hughes Road.. Franklin was enumerated as age 74, a widower, living with Fred and Ora in Madison in the 1930 census. At that time, their family was listed on Church Street, near Clayton M. Balch, but the 1930 Wann dwelling was most likely their house at 302 Church Street rather than 314 Church Street. It is believed from the sequence of listings in the 1930 Madison town census that Clayton Balch was renting the house that Fred Wann built at 314 Church. Franklin C. Barnard’s father was John Levi Barnard, a farmer listed in the census of 1860 in Valley Head as age 39, born in Georgia, when “Frank C.” was shown as age 6. Frank was the first-born child of that family, with siblings Jesse (male, age 4) and Effy (female, age 2) -- all born

in Alabama. The only female that could be the mother of the children listed in the 1860 Barnard household was Mary A., age 26, born in Tennessee. Death records of some of the children of the 1860 and the 1870 censuses show their mother as Mary Hoge or Hogue. The tombstone for Franklin Barnard in Madison shows his mother’s name as Mary A. Hoge, wife of John Levi Barnard. However, the order of the 1860 census listing of the household members indicates a strong possibility that Mary could have been the wife at that time of male A. F. Barnard, age 27, born in Georgia. A. F. Barnard may have died before 1870, leaving Mary to become the wife of his brother John. The young children could have grown up recognizing Mary as the mother of all of the children of both A. F. and John. The indication that John was an older brother of A. F. Barnard is that John was listed first as head of the household. A. F. was listed next with separate property data from John’s, and then Mary A. was listed before the children as a “Domestic” (which was typically the designation of the wife in the 1860 census records). Their positions in the listing provides strong evidence that A. F. and Mary were husband and wife and parents of the 1860 children. The 1870 census showed the John Barnard family living in Collins (now Collinsville) of DeKalb County, with no A. F., but with Mary and additional children John (age 9), Sallie (7), and Lee (4). The relationships to the head of the household, such as wife, son, daughter, father, mother, brother, etc., were not used in the censuses until 1880 and later. The John Barnard family was not found in the 1880 census anywhere in Alabama. However, in the 1880 census of Madison County, there is a Frank Barnard at age 26 with wife Rebecca enumerated in the Huntsville household of John and Emma (McClure) Stewart. While the age of this Frank closely matches to be the father of Ora Barnard, the birthplace of this Frank was given as Alabama, with father born in Indiana (not Georgia) and mother born in Alabama. Likewise, Rebecca’s entry shows that she was born in Alabama, with her father’s birthplace as Tennessee and her mother’s birthplace as South Carolina. This information does not match at all with the census records of 1860 and 1870 for the parents of Frank Barnard of DeKalb County, Ora’s known parents. Additionally, the name Rebecca does not fit what is known for Ora’s mother. John Stewart was listed in 1880 as age 44, and Emma was age 34. The 1880 data showed this Frank as a brother-in-law and Rebecca as a sister-in-law of John Stewart, but nothing found in the Family Search genealogical data files could corroborate that relationship to either John or Emma Stewart. This Stewart family remained in Huntsville through the 1900 census, but the Barnards were not found in census of the Stewart household again. Moreover, there have been no 1880 census records found for Franklin and Sallie (the mother of Ora,per the 1900 census) Barnard, even though the 1900 DeKalb Coun-
ty census shows them as having been married 21 years earlier, in 1879. In the 1900 listing, Frank was age 45, a farmer born in Alabama in July of 1854, with father’s birthplace as Georgia and mother’s birthplace as Tennessee. Sallie was listed as age 44, born in Tennessee in July of 1855. Her father’s birthplace was shown as Tennessee and her mother’s as Alabama. Ora Barnard was the first of six children listed for the family. Ora was shown as age 17, born in January of 1883 in Alabama. Two of Frank’s younger Barnard brothers (Lee and John) were listed nearby, showing the same birthplaces for their parents. In 1910 the census record shows Franklin C. Barnard and Sallie in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. Frank’s occupation then was as a teacher in a public school. The data shows that Sallie had borne six children for Franklin, but only five remained alive. Their second child, a son named John, had died between 1900 and 1910. Ora was not with them in 1910 because she had married Fred Wann in 1905, and they no doubt had their own household, buying the 314 Church Street town lot in Madison on November 1, 1916, a year after Ora became the postmaster of Madison. They may have been renting a log house on that lot before buying it, according to old stories that the Wann house in Madison encased an old log cabin. No census record has been found for Fred and Ora in 1910, but it is known that Fred and Ora Wann had a daughter named Katherine (born in 1907) who married Joe D. Anderson in 1926 in Madison County. Ora’s property at 314 Church Street was sold to “a Mr. Smith” according to notes left by Madison historian Perch B. Keel. According to the 1930 and 1940 censuses it is known that the property was occupied as a renter (not owner) by Clayton Merril Balch (1897-1988), sometimes shown in records as Merril or Murrell Clayton Balch. He was married to Ruth Certain in 1926, and both are now buried in the Huntsville Memory Gardens Cemetery on Highway 72. Ruth was ten years younger than Clayton, and her parents were William Lewis and Anne Wyly Certain. Clayton’s occupation was given in both censuses as the manager of a cotton gin, possibly the one on Jeff Road, since Clayton’s early life and ancestry was in the Monrovia area. Merril was a younger brother of Madison resident Ira Clifton Balch, both being sons of William Walter Balch and his wife Mary Jane Hilliard. William Walter Balch in turn was a son of William McKinney Balch, who was a son of the Hezekiah J. Balch noted in a previous article about 311 and 312 Church Street. The current owner of 314 Church Street is Linda Marler and her husband Terry Parker. They have expanded and updated the house, which is much larger than the 69 footwide lot’s street view due to the depth (227 feet) of the lot. This is generally the case for many of the houses along the east side of Church Street, due to the smaller streetside lot dimensions with very deep reaches back from the street.
