The American Legion Post 229 in Madison and Auxiliary Unit placed about 600 wreaths at veterans graves in Madison. Madison County and city youth organizations and local veterans showed up in force to volunteer. The Bob Jones and Sparkman JROTC units, the local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, RTX Vets and Post members worked together to complete the project on Saturday.

MADISON - The Alabama State Department of Education released its school and district report cards last week for 2022-2023. Once again, Madison City Schools has plenty to be proud about. “I am pleased to report that Madison City Schools yet again earned an “A” with a grade of 94,” Madison City Schools Superintendent of Education Dr. Ed Nichols said. “Not only did we get an “A” for the District as a whole, every single one of our schools earned an A.” Madison City Schools has earned an A consistently - both as a district and by individual schools since ALSDE launched the A-F report cards for the 2016-2017 school year. Report cards were suspended in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years during COVID. MCS is also one of only nine school districts out of 140 statewide that has never earned less than an A over the ALSDE grading years. “Compared to our straight-A peers, MCS has nearly twice the enrollment and number of schools,” Nichols added. “This achievement speaks to the dedication and support of teachers, staff, administrators, school board members, students, parents, community members, and the way our team utilizes our resources.” The report cards are an evaluation of academic achievement and growth, chronic absenteeism and progress in EL proficiency for elementary and middle schools. At the high school level, the state report cards are also a measure of graduation rate and college and career readiness. Here are the school by school grades: Bob Jones HS, 91; James Clemens HS, 91; Discovery Middle, 91; Liberty Middle, 93; Columbia Elem, 97; Heritage Elem, 99; Horizon Elem, 97; Madison Elem, 94; Midtown Elem, 94; Mill Creek, 96 Elem; Rainbow Elem, 96. “While we are proud of our report cards, we recognize the need to strive to continually improve,” Nichols said. “One specific change will be with our middle school math program starting in January. We have been working on this change prior to the release of the state report card scores. We recognized the need for change in middle school math after receiving the 2023 ACAP math scores. Our middle schools have been implementing a Math Mastery Program, founded upon the 2016 Math Course of Study. Moving forward, our middle school mathematics assessments will include longer unit assessments supplemented by formative quizzes throughout each unit. In place of retakes, students can receive partial credit on an assessment through error analysis.”

A look at Christmas past through local shopping purchases By JOHN RANKIN Madison Historian MADISON – Over the years of my research into the families of the 1800s in Madison and Madison County, I have had the privilege to photograph some of the old store ledgers. The ledgers maintained by the historical stores typically showed the date and cost of each sale, and usually, the entries in the ledgers included the items purchased as well as the purchaser’s name on each line. Of course, in those days the customers typically had a running total, but some businesses were “cash-only” transactions. Such ledgers give a glimpse into not only who shopped in Madison stores but also provide interesting comparisons of products and prices from then to now. By selecting pages from my files that deal with Christmas Eve purchases, I can see how much people of the time spent on their Christmas gifts – which typically were only for immediate family members still living in the family home. It was apparent from the line items each day that typically people of the time bought the holiday gifts on Christmas Eve. This was probably to keep their scarce money until the last day possible and also because the typical houses of the time had few places to hide any gifts until Christmas morning. Times were simpler, and gifts were also, costing much less than we spend today on such things. The page entries below will show some purchases made on Christmas Eve and some even made on Christmas Day in the local stores. However, in the case of the 1888-1889 ledger of George Washington Wise’s store, it shows

The Bishop’s Wife, produced in 1947, is the story of a suave angel who comes to earth to save a woman and her Episcopal bishop husband from spiritual doubt, and a lack of love for life itself. In the story, David Niven plays the bishop who dreams of building a great cathedral. Money for the project is a problem so he prays to God for divine intervention. God sends an angel named Dudley, portrayed by Cary Grant, who teaches Bishop Henry a lesson or two about what’s truly important in life. The movie is entertaining, Henry gets his priorities in order, and there is a happy ending. The movie concludes with Bishop
Henry preaching a sermon on Christmas Eve. The sermon is short and rather anti-climatic, given the story line. It’s one of those messages one could easily miss because it’s literally at the end of the picture. However, the message is profound in that it would preach well anywhere today, in a world so in need of the simple, non-commercial message of Christmas. “Tonight I want to tell you the story of an empty stocking. “Once upon a midnight clear, there was a child’s cry, a blazing star hung over a stable, and wise men came with birthday gifts. Clay-Chalkville took a 31-28 lead with 2:27 to go, but Saraland (14-1) drove 79 yards in 11 plays to set up a fourth-and-5 at the Clay 10-yard line with five seconds remaining. The Spartans chose to run a play instead of attempting a game-tying field goal. A quarterback sprint up the middle came to a crushing end as Barber stopped the possible game-winning play at the one-yard line as the game came to an end. Class 5A The Dolphins of Gulf Shores (150) built a 21-0 lead in the game’s
opening 10 minutes and hung on for 21-14 win over defending champ Ramsay (12-3) in the Class 5A title game. Senior Ronnie Royal ran 22 times for 188 yards, scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 55 yards and had a marvelous interception on defense to lead the Dolphins to their first state title. Class 4A Montgomery Catholic (15-0) earned its eighth shutout of the 2023 season and won its first AHSAA state football championship by whipping Cherokee County (132) 35-0 in the Class 4A title game. Caleb McCreary scored three touchdowns and threw another to lead the Knights to the victory over the Warriors. Class 2A The Fyffe dynasty continues. The Red Devils (14-1) captured its seventh state championship in the last 10 seasons with a convincing 43-24 victory over Reeltown (13-1). Logan Anderson ran 34 times for 256 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Red Devils. In the last 10 seasons, Fyffe has compiled a 139-6 record, which means the Red Devils have more state titles than losses during that span. Anderson, a junior, set two single-season team records in 2023 as he had 2,864 yards rushing with 45 touchdowns. Class 1A Leroy High used an old-school approach to take home the Class 1A state championship trophy. Af-
ter Coosa Christian (9-6) blocked a punt and recovery in the end zone to earn a touchdown and tie the game at 21-21 with 6:26 remaining in the game, Leroy went to work… old school style. The Bears (14-0) drove 61 yards in eight plays, all of which were running plays, to score from the one-yard line with 2:01 to play for a 28-21 victory. This was Leroy’s seventh state title, all since 2004.
Class 6A-7A Flag Central-Phenix City shook off a sluggish start, thanks to a stifling defensive effort, and ran away with a 25-0 victory over Vestavia Hills to win the AHSAA’s first Class 6A-7A girls flag football championship as part of Super 7. The Red Devils (18-0) limited Vestavia Hills (17-1) to just 63 yards on 33 plays and intercepted four passes to earn the shutout and the state championship.
Class 1A-5A Flag Quarterback Samarian Franklin ran one-yard for a touchdown on fourth down in overtime to lift the Dragons of Wenonah (17-0) to an 1812 victory over Montgomery Catholic (17-4) in the Class 1A-5A championship contest as part of Super 7. Montgomery Catholic had its first shot at overtime, but came up empty opening the way for Wenonah to score and capture the state title.
