MADISON-Accordingtothe1830census,ElijahHenryBoardmanwasborn sometimebetween1780and1790.Inthat censushishouseholdhereincludedone male0-5yearsold,onefemale0-5years old,andafemale30-40.Hewaslistedas theownerof35slaves.The1840census hadonly5slavesandnoyoungmalesin thehousehold.By1850hewasnotfound inthelocalcensusrecords.Beginning in1818here,heownedlandcalledthe BoardmanMillsPlantation.Thatland extendedfromthelocationoftheRedstoneArsenalair eldwestward,coveringtheareaalmosttoAndersonRoad ontoday’sarsenal,endingjustalittlebit eastofZierdtRoadandtheoldLadyAnn Lake,nowsometimescalledSunLake.

Boardman’sneighborsincludedhis brotherJohnBoardman,Nathaniel Terry,JamesManning,EldredRawlins, IsaacInman,CharlesBetts,andJohn Looney–allwell-knowninthehistory ofMadisonandthesurroundingarea. ThelocalBoardmanbrothershad historicalconnectionstoConnecticut, whereanumberfamiliesofthatsurnamewerefound.Infact,aseniorElijah BoardmanwasConnecticut’sSenatorin 1821to1823--theyearofhisdeathwhile inof ce.HewasofthesamepoliticalpartyasHuntsville’sJohnWilliamsWalker, whoservedintheUnitedStatesSenate atthesametime.Possiblyafterlosinga seriesoflargebetsonhorseraces,Elijah Boardmanmortgagedpartofhislandin 1835toJohnPershouseofManchester, England.PershousebecameanaturalizedAmericancitizenby1841whenhe died.TheexecutorofthePershouseestate ledsuitinMadisonCountycourt overnon-paymentofElijah’smortgage, andtheBoardmanMillsPlantationwas soldin1843tosettlethedebt.Thepurchaseratthecourt-orderedsheriff’ssale wasSethTerryofHartford,Connecticut. Onepotentialcluetothearrangement isthat1850Connecticutcensusrecords show20-year-oldElijahG.Boardmanas a“student”borninOhio.Itisknown thattheAmericanAsylumwasbegun withan1815meetinginHartfordoften prominentmenofConnecticut.Among thesemenwereNathanielTerry(memberoftheU.S.ConstitutionalConvention)andThomasGallaudet,forwhom GallaudetUniversityfortheblindwas namedinWashingtonDC.TheAmericanAsylumwasthe rstinAmericaspeci callycharteredtoeducatethe“deaf anddumb”(mute).Itwassupportedin the1800sbylandacquisitionsanddonationstocovertuitionforitsstudents.It maywellbethatMadisonCounty’sElijahH.Boardmanfamilyincludedason whomayhavebeenadeafmuteandwas educatedinHartfordbymortgagingpart oftheBoardmanMillsPlantation.
