“Thisisourregistrationsoftwareandourmembershipsoftware.We’retwentyversionbehind thelatestversion.So,we’reduefor anupgrade.Itmovesallourdata offcityserversandputstheminto acloudbasedsystem,”explained ParksandRecreationDirector KoryAlfred.
Thenewsoftwarepromisesto bringnewconvenienceslikean appandaqueuefeaturethatallowsforeasysignupsinhightrafcperiodswithoutcrashing.

ByJOHNP.RANKIN MadisonHistorianMADISON-Accordingtothe1830census,ElijahHenryBoardmanwasborn sometimebetween1780and1790.Inthat censushishouseholdhereincludedone male0-5yearsold,onefemale0-5years old,andafemale30-40.Hewaslistedas theownerof35slaves.The1840census hadonly5slavesandnoyoungmalesin thehousehold.By1850hewasnotfound inthelocalcensusrecords.Beginning in1818here,heownedlandcalledthe BoardmanMillsPlantation.Thatland extendedfromthelocationoftheRedstoneArsenalair eldwestward,coveringtheareaalmosttoAndersonRoad ontoday’sarsenal,endingjustalittlebit eastofZierdtRoadandtheoldLadyAnn Lake,nowsometimescalledSunLake.
Boardman’sneighborsincludedhis brotherJohnBoardman,Nathaniel Terry,JamesManning,EldredRawlins, IsaacInman,CharlesBetts,andJohn Looney–allwell-knowninthehistory ofMadisonandthesurroundingarea. Boardman’slandwassubsequently ownedafterhisdeathbyRichardHoldingandRichardLipscomb.Thereare threecemeteriesknowntobeontheold BoardmanMillsPlantation.ThosecemeteriesaredesignatedastheLipscomb Cemeteryandtwounnamedcemeteries withnotombstones.ThelandwasafterwardownedbyMadison’sHertzler family.Dr.JohnHertzlerhadahouse inMadisonandanotherlargehouseand farmlandthathadbeenpartofBoardmanMillsPlantation.
ThelocalBoardmanbrothershad historicalconnectionstoConnecticut, whereanumberfamiliesofthatsurnamewerefound.Infact,aseniorElijah BoardmanwasConnecticut’sSenatorin 1821to1823--theyearofhisdeathwhile inof ce.HewasofthesamepoliticalpartyasHuntsville’sJohnWilliamsWalker, whoservedintheUnitedStatesSenate atthesametime.Possiblyafterlosinga seriesoflargebetsonhorseraces,Elijah Boardmanmortgagedpartofhislandin 1835toJohnPershouseofManchester, England.PershousebecameanaturalizedAmericancitizenby1841whenhe died.TheexecutorofthePershouseestate ledsuitinMadisonCountycourt overnon-paymentofElijah’smortgage, andtheBoardmanMillsPlantationwas soldin1843tosettlethedebt.Thepurchaseratthecourt-orderedsheriff’ssale wasSethTerryofHartford,Connecticut. TerrywasatthetimeCommissionerof theAmericanAsylumofHartford.He hadalsobeentheagentinvolvedinanothermortgagethatBoardmantookon thesameparcelafterithadalreadybeen mortgagedtoPershouse.
Onepotentialcluetothearrangement isthat1850Connecticutcensusrecords show20-year-oldElijahG.Boardmanas a“student”borninOhio.Itisknown thattheAmericanAsylumwasbegun withan1815meetinginHartfordoften prominentmenofConnecticut.Among thesemenwereNathanielTerry(memberoftheU.S.ConstitutionalConvention)andThomasGallaudet,forwhom GallaudetUniversityfortheblindwas namedinWashingtonDC.TheAmericanAsylumwasthe rstinAmericaspeci callycharteredtoeducatethe“deaf anddumb”(mute).Itwassupportedin the1800sbylandacquisitionsanddonationstocovertuitionforitsstudents.It maywellbethatMadisonCounty’sElijahH.Boardmanfamilyincludedason whomayhavebeenadeafmuteandwas educatedinHartfordbymortgagingpart oftheBoardmanMillsPlantation.
TheNathanielTerryconnectionis alsointriguing,becausean1818–1830 neighborofElijahBoardmaninMadison Countyhadthatname.Infact,thelocal NathanielTerrymovedintoLimestone CountyandbecamePresidentoftheAlabamaSenate,1841-5,aswellasbeinga candidateforgovernorofthestate.The localNathanielwascloselyconnectedto theseveralNathanielTerry’sofVirginia historyinthe1724-1780period.Whatis knownisthatthelocalTerryfamilywas alsodirectlyconnectedtotheDarwin, Humphrey,Sneed,Douglass,andStrong familiesofMadisonhistory.Wherethe TerrylinesconnectinVirginiaandConnecticutisnotyetknownbythiswriter, butourlocalJohnandElijahH.Boardmancitizenscanbeshowntohavebeen involvedwithTerryfamiliesinbothVirginiaandConnecticut.
Beginningin2006,Dr.FrancesRoberts’researchpaperswerecollectedfor archivingintheUniversityofAlabama atHuntsville’sSalmonLibrary.Dr.RobertswasUAH’s rstprofessorofhistory, andatherdeathsheleftanenormous collectionofdataaboutearlypeople
andeventsinthisarea,aswellasmuch aboutothercountiesofAlabama.When hercollectionwasdeliveredtotheUAH archive,notedlocalhistorianandauthor NancyRohrvolunteeredtosort,arrange, andindexthematerialbytopics.She foundBoardmanmentionedinthecollectioncontactedmetocomparenotes. Thereafter,webothlearnedmuchmore aboutthelocalBoardmanfamilybyusingthecollectionofDr.Robertsandby archaeologicalinspectionsandtouring thesiteofBoardmanMillsPlantation onthearsenal,aswellasbyresearching intothehugecollectionofvariousdata resourcesintheMadisonCountyRecordsCenter.
BoardmanMillsPlantationwasconsiderablymorethanjustahorsefarm onlandthatstraddledIndianCreekasit owsthroughtoday’sRedstoneArsenal. The“mill”partofthenamefortheplantationcamefromastate-of-the-artgrist millonIndianCreekthatgroundvarious typesofgrainintheearly1800s.Adsextollingitscapacitiesandequipmentwere oftenplacedinthenewspaperownedby Elijah’sbrotherJohn.RecordsinseveralotheroldnewspapersofHuntsville intheearly1800salsoshowthatElijah importedthebestthoroughbredhorses availablefromEnglandandotherparts ofEuropeandtheMiddleEast.Hehad thembroughtbyshipstoseaportsonthe Gulfcoast,andthentheywereridden tothislocationtoberacedallaround AmericafromtheBoardmanMillStables.
Eventually,NancyRohrwroteastory entitled“OfftotheRaces:HorseRacing intheTennesseeValley”,publishedin TheHuntsvilleHistoricalReview,Winter-Spring2010issue(Volume35,Number1,pages35-57).Thearticleonpages43-57providedextensiveinformation aboutBoardman’shorseracingbusiness. Onpage50ofthereferencedpublication, Nancywrotethat“…inSeptember1839 the(Turf)Registerpublishedadetailed listofBoardman’sbloodstockusedfor breedingattheMills.Eachhorsewas listedwithpedigreeandperformance. Thelistingranforsixpagesand nished witharecapitulationoftwoimportedstallions,nineteenimportedbrood mares,onenativebroodmare,twotwoyear llies,nineyearlingcolts,sixyearling llies,sixcoltfoalsbornin1839,and eight lliesbornin1839.Boardman’s farmhoused fty-threehorses.Thelist didnotmentionanyhorsesforsale.”
ThestoryfurtherdetailedElijah’s manytravelsabroadtobuyhorsesand aboutsubsequentlyracingtheminmany places,locallyandaroundthecountry. HeandhisbrotherJohncameherefrom Whitesborough,NewYork,before1818. Theyweremajorfactorsinhorseraces heldinMadisonCountyatsuchplaces astheGreenBottomInnJockeyClub andthePulaskiPikeTrack.Johnowned landadjacenttoBoardmanMills,buthe alsohadavarietyofotherinterestsand occupations.HewaseditoroftheAlabamaRepublican,anearlynewspaperof Huntsville.In1819Johnprintedthenew stateconstitutionofAlabama,having beenappointedtoprintAlabama’spubliclawsinJanuaryof1818.Hebecame anattorneyandadirectoroftheMuscle ShoalsCanal,aswellassupportingthe establishmentofastatebankandorganizingthestate’s rstpubliclibraryin Huntsville,Alabama,ofwhichhebecamedirector.
Afterreceivingwidespreadcoverage inhorseracingpublicationsofAmericafortwodecades,bothbrothersfellon hardtimes,sufferingextensive nancial lossesinthePanicof1837.Johneven edtoFranceforatimetoescapeobligationsinAlabamaandConnecticut.ElijahabsorbedthemajorportionofJohn’s debtsbyusinghisfarm,slaves,and horsesascollateral.Bythemid-1840s JohnBoardmanhadresettlednearHolly Springs,Mississippi,wherehediedsoon afterward.ElijahtraveledtheretoassistinsettlementofJohn’sestate,buthe alsodiedinHollySpringsafteratwelvedayillness.LucretiaMillerBoardman, Elijah’swidow,receivedlessthan$3,000 inthe nalsettlementofhisestate.AccordingtotheHistoricalReviewarticle, thiswas“…farlessthanthecostofany oneoftheimportedhorsesfromthe 1830sorevensomeofthebetsplacedon theoutcomeofhishorsesattheraces.”
