MONTGOMERY—Movementongamblinglegislation hasstalledinthe rstweekof thesecondhalfofthe2024legislativesession.

Theconstitutionalamendment,HB151,passedintheSenateonMarch8withonevoteto spareoverthenecessary21-vote thresholdbyamarginof22-11. Accompanyingenablinglegislation,HB152passedbythesame margin.StateSen.GregAlbritton(R-Atmore)carriedboth billsintheSenate.

Thesubstituteamendments undertheamendedSenateplan includeastatewidelotteryand

arequirementthatthegovernor negotiateagamblingcompact withthePoarchBandofCreek Indians(PCI).Sportsbetting, onlinegamblingorothernonPCInewcasinosaren’tincluded intheSenate’samendmentlike theHouse’sversion.

Theconstitutionalamendmentwouldbevotedoninthe SenateplanonSeptember10in aspecialelection.TheHouse versionwasestimatedtoraise annualrevenuetothestateby around$900million.TheSenateversionisestimatedtoraise around$300millionannually.

MADISON–StudentsfromMillCreek ElementarySchoolwereshiningatthe ElementaryScienceOlympiad2024for DivisionAAatJacksonvilleHighSchool.

Theysecuredafourth-placespotoverallandamedalwinforeachindividual student.MillCreek’seight-memberteam competedagainst16schoolsattheregionalScienceOlympiadonFeb.24.

ScienceOlympiad,anationalnonprofitorganization,isdevotedtoimproving thequalityofscienceeducation,increasingstudentinterestandrecognizingoutstandingachievementinscienceeducationbybothstudentsandteachers.The ElementaryScienceOlympiadencouragesclassroomteacherstoexplorenew methodsofteachingscience.

Thesetournamentsareacademicinterscholasticcompetitionswithaseries ofindividualandteamevents.Students prepareduringtheentireschoolyear.

ScienceOlympiadeventsrequire teamwork,groupplanningandcooperation.Theemphasisisonlearning,participation,interactionandhavingfun.

SarahandSteptoePicketthad13children.Amongthemwerethefollowing: RichardOrrickPickett(1814-1898), whocommandedthe10thAlabamaCavalryunderGeneralRoddy.Thiswasone oftheunitsthatdefendedthenorthern Alabamaareaduringthelastphasesof theCivilWar.Richard’shouseonSeminaryStreetinFlorenceisstillstanding, accordingtoChrisEdwardsandFaye Axfordintheirbook“TheLureandLore ofLimestoneCounty”(1978).

SteptoeJr.,whoisburiedbesideSarahintheMadisonCityCemetery.He livedfrom1816to1884.His rstwifewas FrancesWard,andshediedin1850,just overoneyearaftertheirmarriageand onlytwomonthsbeforeher21stbirthday.SheisburiedintheoldTrianaCity Cemeterywithalargeandimpressive obelisktomarkthegrave.Themonumentindicatesthatthefamilyhadgreat wealthbeforetheCivilWar,asopposed toSarah’ssimpletombstone,whichindicatesthe nancialhardshipsoflifein theSouthafterthewar.Thesecondwife ofSteptoeJr.wasEugeniaSale.Shewas adaughterofCaptainDudleySale,who servedasQuartermasterofCompany Fofthe9thAlabamaInfantryduring theCivilWar.Thisunitwasmadeupof mostlylocaltroopsfromthisarea.

The5thchildofSteptoeSr.&Sarah O.PickettwasFelicia.ThereisaFelicia PickettburiednearSarahintheMadisoncemetery,butsheisagranddaughter,notSarah’sdaughterwhomarried GovernorReubenChapman.Sarah’s daughterFelicialivedtohavechildren ofherown,survivingthroughtheCivil War.GovernorChapmanandhiswife areburiedinMapleHillCemeteryin Huntsville,alongwithseveralothergovernorsofthestate.

The7thchildofSteptoeSr.&Sarah wasDr.JohnScottPickett(1823-1887). HemarriedMarthaBlackwell,daughter

ofWilliamHenryBlackwellandEliza Collierofthefamousfamilieswholived onplantationsalongtheTennesseeRiverbetweenTrianaandMooresville.

The9thchildofSteptoeSr.&Sarah wasDr.WilliamHenryPickett(18261890).HestudiedatYaleUniversityand graduatedasaphysicianfromtheUniversityofLouisianain1848.Hemarried AmyRainesCollier,daughterofEdward Collier.

The11thchildofSteptoeSr.&Sarah wasSarahVirginiaPickett,whomarried SamuelBlackwell,asonofHenryBlackwellandElizaCollier,whosebrother HenryWatkinsCollierwasaChiefJusticeoftheAlabamaSupremeCourtand Governorofthestate.

The13thchildofSteptoeSr.&Sarah wasAnnaCorbinPickett(1836-1909). ShemarriedThomasBibb,whowasthe 3rdchildofThomasBibbSr.,the2nd GovernorofAlabamaandbrotherofthe WilliamBibbwhowasthe1stGovernor ofthestate.TheBibbfamilylivedinthe nearbymansionthatThomasBibbSr. builtin1826atBelleMina,nearMooresville.ThecommunityofBelleMinatook itsnamefromthenameofthemansion, “BelleManor”--meaning“Beautiful House”.

WhilethePickettfamilyitselfwas quiteprominentinearlyAlabama,the intermarriageswiththeBlackwelland theCollierfamiliesassuredthatthemost in uentialpeopleoftheregionvisitedin thePicketthomesandthatthePicketts attendedthegrandpartiesthatthese familiesheldonthelocalplantations,includingthegovernor’smansionatBelle Mina.TheCollierplantationalongthe riverwascalledMyrtleGrove,andall ofthesefamiliescamefromVirginia around1818to1820.Theirchildrenand connectionbymarriageofthesefamilies includedsomefamousfolks,suchasWilliamWalker(“ManofDestiny”whobecameaPresidentofthecountryofNicaragua),andMaryHarrisonDent(who wasacloserelativeofJuliaDent,wifeof PresidentUlyssesS.Grant,whofought on“theotherside”duringtheCivilWar). Theyalsohadanintermarriagewiththe localWithersfamily,whosedaughter SusannahmarriedClementComerClay. ClementComerClayownedaplantation justnorthofwheretheairportistoday, andhebecamethe8thGovernorofAlabamaandnamesakeoftheoldClement ComerClaybridgewhereHighway231 crossestheTennesseeRiver.Clement andSusannahareburiedinMapleHill CemeteryinHuntsvillealso--inthe “Governorsplot”verynearwhereGovernorReubenChapmanandhiswifeFeliciaPickettareburied.

Consideringthatthegovernorsand theirsonshadprettymuchtheirchoice offairmaidensforwives,andthatSarahO.ChiltonPickettproducedtwo daughterswhomarriedintogovernors’ families,shemusthavebeenabeautiful womanherself.Furthermore,shewould havegreatstoriesoftheoldplantation lifeandballsinthemansions,balanced bytalesoflifeduringandimmediately aftertheCivilWar,especiallywithrespecttointerfaceswithGeneralU.S. Grantandhisin-lawsintheSouth.Sarahwouldhavetobeoneofthemostinterestingcharacterstohaveeverlivedin earlyMadison,butshediedhereandis buriedwithasmall,ordinarytombstone.

WhyisthereanEaster?Itismorethanareligiousholiday

TounderstandEaster’s meaning,wemustconsiderhowourworldcame intobeing.WhetheryoubelieveGodcreatedtheworld,thereisstillabeginning pointatwhichwhatwasnot,became whatwas.Usingprinciplesofscience leadsustothreeconclusions:

1.Weliveinaclosedsystem,where matterandenergyexistconsistently,no energyormatterhasbeenaddedortakenawaysincetheworldbecame.2.The buildingblocksofourexistencehavenot changedsincetheybecame.3.Thecauses thatactedatthebeginningstillcausethe sameeffects.

Therearethreebasicprinciplesofthe worldinwhichwelive:

ThePrincipleofUniformityofNature: Thisprincipleassertsthatthelawsofnatureremainconsistentacrosstimeand space.Inotherwords,thesamephysical processesandnaturalphenomenaoccur consistentlyundersimilarconditions. Whetherwe’reobservingthebehaviorof atomsorthemovementofplanets,this principleguidesourunderstandingof theuniverse.Inotherwords,whenyou wakeupinthemorningandwalktoyour kitchen,yourrefrigeratorhasnotturned intoaheapofrocks.ThescripturedeclaresthatGodisthesameyesterday, today,andforever.(Heb.13:8)Therefore, whenweread“ForGodsolovedtheworld Hegavehisonlybegottenson,thatwhosoeverbelievesinHimshallhaveeternal life”JN3:16,itisaprinciple,notjusta religiousbelief.

ThePrincipleofPerpetuityofSubstance:Accordingtothisprinciple,matterandenergycannotbecreatedordestroyed;theymerelytransformfromone formtoanother.Italignswiththeconceptofconservationofmassandenergy. WhenJesusappearedinour“closed system,”itwasanepochalevent,neithermatterorenergyhadbeenaddedto ortakenawaysinceitsformation.Our closedsystemdidnotbecomeunstable whenthevirginbirthofJesusrevealed anotherformofenergyandmatter.This energyandmatterbecamerevealedin theformofababyinamanger.Here sincethefoundationoftheworld,but nowrevealed.Eternityenteredmortality andGod,evermindfuloftheprinciples oftheworldHecreated,gaveeveryonea pathtoovercomingdeath,sickness,worryandfear,theverythingsthatmakeus, notwanttolive.Theadage,“Everyone WantstoGotoHeaven,butnobodywants todie”becamearealityinthedeathof Jesus.Theprincipleof“Nobodygets outofherealive”wasprovenfalse.Now thereisawaythroughdeathtoeverlast-

Afewweeks ago,halfofatractortrailerdangledovertheside oftheClarkMemorial Bridgewhichconnects Louisville,KYtosouthern Indiana.Farbelowwas theOhioRiver.Reporters ockedandspectators staredinhorrorasemergencyworkersrushedto thescene.

Thedriver-awoman-wasstillstrappedin thefrontseat.Asthe truckteetered,itlooked atanymomentthevehicle wouldtearfreefromthe mangledbridgeplunging hertoherdeath.

Justwhenitseemedher lifewasebbingaway,a mannamedBryceCarden wrappedina re ghter’s uniformandropecame fromabovetosaveher. Hewasheronlyhope.

Shereachedoutand tookhishand.Shedid notfall,shedidnotslip, butheldfasttoherrescuer.Whensheputherlife literallyinhishands,he liftedheroutofthedangerouslyperchedsemi toasafeplaceuponthe bridge.

Ican’timaginetheemotions…thesheerterror asshehungovertheside ofthebridge.Thedriver wasintrouble.Shehad nohope.Shecouldnot saveherself.

Godknewweweresinkinginsinandneededa Rescuer,aSavior,soHe sentOne.HisnameisJesus.Hecamedownfrom abovewrappedin esh andbone.BorninBethlehemandlaidinamanger, HewastheMessiah rst promisedinthebookof Genesis.Asanadult,He didn’tjustriskhislife,He gaveHislifeforus.Ifwe willreachouttoHim,He willsaveus.Hewillforgiveusofoursins,walk withusdaily,andtakeus toheavenwhenwedie.
