WhenKayKent,asawriterforthe HuntsvilleNewswroteinherarticle aboutMadison’s1969celebrationofthe 100-yearanniversaryoftheincorporationofthetown’schangeofnames,she toldsomeofTom’slifestoryatage106. ShealsomistakenlywrotethatTomwas olderthanthetown,whichwasnotthe case.Thecelebrationonlycommemoratedthenamechange,notthebirthofthe town,whichbeganin1857,wellbefore theoutbreakoftheCivilWar.By1869 thetownwaswell-established,having severalstoresandquiteafewhomes,as wellasbeinganimportantdepotstation fortheMemphis&CharlestonRailRoad.
The1969articlealsostatedthatTom hadbeenbornaslave,whichwastechnicallycorrect,butsincehisbirthdate wasacceptedasbeing1863,hewasborn aboutthesametimeasAbrahamLincolnsignedthebillofEmancipation ofallslavesinthesouthernstates.Of course,atthetime,Tomwouldnothave anymemoryofbeingbornasaslave duringhisearlychildhood,norwouldhe haveanyrecollectionofplowingin fields andbeingrunraggedwhilebeingbeatenwithabullwhip,aswasstatedlaterin thestory.ThearticlealsosaidthatTom wasborninMoulton,butthatcannot beprovenbyanyofficialrecordsfound todate,eventhoughitwasfoundthat aTomMcAfeeatage18waslivingand workinginCherokeeCountybeforethe timethatourTomwasknowntolivein bothLimestoneandMadisonCounties.
