ByJOHNP.RANKIN MadisonHistorianMADISON-Aseitherthebravestor themostfoolhardyofmenthatIhaveresearched,WilliamGraystandsoutamong thepioneersoftheMadisonarea.While hewasasoldierfromVirginiaduringthe AmericanRevolutionaryWar,thatisnot thereasonforthepriorstatement.His mostoutstandingactwastogethiswife, EleanorWardrobeGray,sisterofLord WardrobeofScotland,tomovewithhim ontoIndianlands.Heconvincedawomanwhohadbeenraisedinthecastlesof EuropetoliveintheAmericanfrontier oftheearly1800s,withno“modern” conveniencesoraccessto nestoresand society.NodoubtEleanorlivedouther marriedlifewithlittleabilitytostayin touchwithherfamilybackinScotland, muchlesstohaveaccesstothecreature comforts.
TheGrayfamilyappearsinthepublic landrecordsofMadisonCountyin1809, whenWilliampurchasedthesoutheast quarterofSection7ofTownship4,Range 1West.Thatlandtodayisjustsouthof Interstate565,northofGossRoadextendingfromGate9onthearsenal,and eastofRideoutRoad(orResearchPark Boulevard)towardtheSpace&RocketCenter.Infact,Williamevenserved onthe rstjuryimpaneledinMadison County.WhenlandinFebruaryof1818 becameavailableforpurchasewestof theoldChickasawIndianBoundaryLine, twoofWilliam’ssonspurchasedlandin Sections4and5ofTownship4,Range 2Westonthesecondandthirddaysof salesbythegovernment.Theirlandwas westoftoday’sHughesRoadandeastof BalchRoad.Itranfromjustnorthofthe MadisonPublicLibraryalmosttoGillespieRoad.
Scrutinyoftheoldrecordsindicates thatWilliamandEleanorapparently livedintheirlastyearswithtwooftheir sons,JamesandDavid.ThefamilycemeteryisonDavid’sland,andgravesare thereforWilliamandEleanor,alongwith severaloftheirchildrenandgrandchildren.Infact,thefamilycemeterybecame theburyinggroundfortheProvidence CumberlandPresbyterianChurchthat boughtthe5acrescontainingthecemeteryfromDavidin1838.Thechurchhad boughtsomelandfromRobertPaynein theadjacentareain1832.Thecemetery andchurchsitearelocatedjustbehind today’sBalchRoadSelfStoragefacility. Thiscouldpossiblyhavebeenthesame CumberlandPresbyterianChurchthatin 1869boughtahalfinterestinthemeeting halloftheMasonicLodgenearPension RowinwestMadisonin1869.However, itisknownthattheonebesidetheGray Cemeterylandwasdisbandedin1902,so itisnotlikelythattheyalsowouldhave alsosoughttheMasonicLodgeagreement.Accordingtotherecordofthe deedoftheagreementwiththeMasons nearPensionRow,thechurchandthe lodgeagreedtoavoidschedulingcon ictingneedsforthebuildingandgrounds. Meanwhile,theGrayfamilycemetery landwassoldtoHezekiahBaileyandby 1856thatlandwasownedbyNathaniel MatsonGooch,whoseheirssolditin1912 tooldtimeGillespiefamilymembers. EleanorGray,William’swife,diedin 1822,just4yearsafteritbecamelegal forthefamilytoliveonwhathadbeen ChickasawIndianlands.Theycould wellhavealsobeen“squatters”onthe landbeforethelegalpurchasedates. Eleanorwas65yearsoldatherdeath. Williamwasbornin1755inPerth,near Edinburgh,Scotland.Heliveduntil1834. WilliamandEleanorweremarriedin 1780,afterthedeathofEleanor’s rst husband,aBlackburn.TheGrayshad atleast7children,andtheirdescendants marriedintothelocalBailey,Gooch, Pride,Smith,Maxwell,Tribble,Betts, andBlackburnfamilies,whoalllivedin theimmediatearea.ThomasGray,ason ofWilliamandEleanor,hadasonnamed Pleasantwhowasbornherebutmoved toTennesseein1826,wherehegotmarriedandhad3childrenbeforemovingon toTexas.There,ineastTexas,Pleasant Grayfoundedatownonabluffthathad alargespringatitsbase.Henamedhis townHuntsville,inhonorofanddueto similaritieswiththecountyseatwhere hehadbeenbornandraised.
Strangelyenough,for38yearsIhave livedaboutamileorsosoutheastofthe GrayCemetery,justacrossHughesRoad fromJames(brotherofDavid)Gray’s land,andIpreviouslylivedfor15years
inClearLakeCityofTexas,justsouth ofHouston,whereIworkedontheApolloProgram,alongwithlatertheApollo-Soyuzproject,Skylab,andevenSpace Shuttle.Whilelivingthere,Ifrequently droveabittothenorth,drovethrough Huntsville,Texas,goingpastthespring atthebottomofthebluff,andthen shinginthelargenearbylake.Betweenthe agesof6and20,IgrewupinMississippi,nearWashington,whichwastheTerritorialCapitalofbothMississippiand Alabamauntil1818.Ourfamilylandin Mississippiwasaboutamilefromthatof aGrayfamily,oursecondnearestneighbor.Itwouldseemthatmylifepathsand thoseoftheGrayfamilyweredestined tocross,eventhoughwewereabout150 yearsapartfromoneanotherwithrespecttothepioneerfamilyfromtheMadisonarea.
Throughtheyearsofmyresearchinto thehistoryofthisareainnorthAlabama, Ihavegainedgreatrespectfortheman whotookabridefromthecastlesofScotlandtoliveamongIndiansinthewildsof theAmericanfrontier.Icanonlyimaginethecommentsthathereceivedoccasionallyfromhiswifeaboutthematterin theirlateryears.Maytheycontinueto restinpeaceintheir ve-acrecemetery. However,iftheycouldseewhathashappenedtoitbecauseofneglect,theymight “turnoverintheirgraves”.
Asmallteamofvolunteershavebeen workingtoclearawaysomeofthemost dangeroustreesforthelasttwoyears. Thiswasundertakeninanticipationof schedulingagrave-markingceremony forWilliamGray’sburialthere.Hewasa provenAmericanRevolutionarysoldier. Mostoftheundergrowthofanysizeor dangerhasalsobeencutaway,andthe groundcoverweedsandgreenbriers havebeeneitherpulledawayorcutor poisonedwithbiocides.However,there arestillabout35ormorepilesofcut brushtobetakenawayandsometombstonesneedtoberepairedbeforeamarkingceremonycanbeheldthere.
Atleast,twooftheoldboxtombshave beenrecentlyrebuiltafterhavingbeen badlybrokenintopiecesbyfallentrees. Thesetwoboxtombscoverthegravesof JamesGrayandhiswifeJane.Nearby arethegravesofWilliamandEleanor Gray.Still,thereisaraceagainstfurtherdamagewhenstormscomethrough thatarea.Oneofthemorerecentstorms brokeortoppledseveralmoreofthe smallertrees,butthankfullynoneof thosetreesfellonknowngraves.Still, itissuspectedthattherearemanymore tombstonesburiedunderaninchorsoof soilfrompaststorms.Therefore,alongtermsystematicprobingbynumerous volunteersusingsmallsteelrods(likeice picks)isneededtolocatethemforrestoration.
Fornow,ithasbeendeemedwiseto waitforthecityto nishconstructinga newroadthroughthewoodedareaimmediatelysouthofthecemeteryland.It hasbeenagreedthataplacetoparkvehiclesoffBalchRoadonthesouthsideof thecemeterywillbealsoconstructedas thenewroadiscompleted.Whatwillremainthen,beforeagrave-markingcemeterycanbeconducted,istoremovethe manycutbrushheapsandtoconstructa smallbridgeoveraravineforwalkingaccessintothecemetery.Oneplanistouse shortlogsofabout10feetoflengthby usingthetreesthathavebeencutdown orfallen.Acoupleoflogswillbesufcient,lyingabout5or6feetapart,and thenoverlayingthemwithsturdyplanks. Thechallengeisanexcitingin-person,district-wideeventforstudents ingrades3-5withatechnicalaptitudeforbiology,physicsandchemistry.BobJonesScienceAcademyis hostingtheevent.
availableonthechallengewebsite. Studentsshouldbringapenciland aneraser,butcalculatorsareprohibited.
Forthepostercontest,students willcreatetheirdesignsathomeand bringtheirartworktothechallenge. Ontheposter,studentswillspell out“SCIENCECHALLENGE”with creative,colorfulscience-themedletters.
Inanotherat-homecreation,studentswilldesigncartoonsforacontest.Studentsshoulddrawanoriginalcartoonthatexplainsoneofthe followingconcepts:circulatorysystem,chemicalbonding,geneticsor Newton’sLawsofMotion.
Foreachgrade,theeventincludes a30-minute,30-questiontest,followedbycontests,labsandactivities.Winnerswillreceiveprizes, medals,recognitionontheScience Challengewebsiteandaninvitation toparticipateinthe2024-2025ScienceAcademyprogram.
