Anavidindoorgardener,Brownnoticed‘green walls’whiletraveling andthenbuiltonewith repurposedmaterialsfor herclassroomandadded anothersectionofsucculents.“Astheplantsgrow, mystudentspropagate thoseplantsandthentake themhometogrow,”she said.
Herschoollabisfullof vegetables,herbs,fruits andwild owersthather studentshavegrownfrom seedsandwillcarryhome toenjoyduringsummer. “There’snopressureor gradesattached;it’sjust somethingwedoforfun,” Brownsaid.

Journeycompetedintwocontestsintwoweeks.Sixth-graders enteredMath-A-PaloozaatBob JonesHighSchoolonMarch23. Sixth-,seventh-andeighth-graders participatedonMarch30inJames ClemensHighSchool’s rstcompetition. “Thisisthe rsttimewecompetedagainstallDivision1schools (JourneyisDivision2).Sincethese competitionsweren’tcategorized basedondivisions,mystudents hadtocompeteagainstthebigDivision1schools,”sponsorandMath

Atthelibrary,mostofherpaintingsmeasuresix-by-sixinchesbut thelargestis36-by-36.Several paintingsdepictthesky,clouds andlandscapes,alongwithchildren.“I’mdrawntopaintingany beautifulscenethatresonates withme,”Strattonsaid.
To-date,Stratton’slargestpainting,“Vulnerable,”ismoreconceptualthanherotherpaintings. “Vulnerable”showsaballoonina cacti eld,representingthefeeling ofvulnerability.
Strattonusuallytitlespiecesto givemoreinsightintothesubject. Alsoatthelibrary,“WellWorn”is apaintingofmen’sshoes,eliciting thememoryofshoesthatherfatherworetoworkorchurchand thenleftattheirhome’sfrontdoor.
Evenat10yearsold,Stratton hadcreativeurgesthatledherto rearrangeherbedroomfurniture. “Mypaternalgrandmothersent myfathercommemorativeplates withpaintingsbyNormanRock-
well.Ilovehiswork,”Stratton said.
Inhighschool,Strattontookan artclassandrealizedherskillat drawingandpainting,alongwith typographyanddesigningbanner/signs. By2016,“IfeltlikeIwouldburst ifIdidn’t ndanoutletformy creativity.Icouldonlyredecorate somanyroomsinmyhouse,” Strattonsaid.Sheregisteredfora beginner’sclassinoilpaintingat HuntsvilleMuseumofArt.
However,theclassdisappointed herbecauselittletimewasdevotedtocolormixingandcomposition.Theemphasiswastocopy someoneelse’spaintingandask theteacherwhatcolorstomixfor thedesiredeffect.
“Aftereachclass,Iwanted tomakemyownpaintingsbut feltliketheteacherheldallthe knowledgeandwasgivingusjust enoughto nishonepainting,” Strattonsaid.
HersolutionwasYouTube.She foundafewartistssharinginformation.“Iabsorbedhoursofcontent.I’velearnedsomuchfrom theseartists–theirknowledge, techniquesandtips,”Stratton said.“
Strattonhascompletedonline classesandhopestoenrollinmasterclasses.
“I’vealwaysfeltmycreativityis agiftthatGodhasgivenme.When I’veusedthatgifttoblessothers, Hehasgivenmetheabilitytodo more,”shesaid.
SheattendedBrighamYoung University,butherchildrenwere thetoppriority.“Icouldn’tbearto havesomeoneelseraisemychildren.Ichosetobeastay-at-home mom.I’msogratefulthatmyhusbandCliffhasalwayssupported thatdecision,”Stattonsaid.

bigdrawing,IdreamedI rodeittoSundaySchool, seeLord,Ireallyreally needit.Alargecrowd gathered,drawnbyan exhibitionofdaredevil motorcycleriders.Inside the“WheelofDeath,”the riderswould ingtheir re-belchingandexplodingenginesagainstthe wheelandletcentrifugalforcedoitsjob.Ina blindingfuryofsmoke, noise,and rethetattooed drivershurledtoward eachotherastheyrodein oppositedirections.The crowdwatchedandoohed andawedastheybarely averteddeath-defyingdisasters.Totopitoffthere wasaonethousand’tall divingboardfromwhicha teamoftrainedmonkeys wouldjump.Astheyhurtledtowardtheircertain death,justbeforeimpact withtheconcrete,they pulledtheirripcordsand oatedeffortlesslytothe cordonedlandingspot. Everyoneexplodedin hurraysandhandclaps.
Finally,theannouncer stated,“LadiesandGentlemen,boysandgirls, itisnowtimeforour grandprizedrawing.”A

ByJOHNP.RANKIN MadisonHistorianThebuildingat204MainStreetthat nowhousesNoblePassageInteriorsin Madisonhashostedavarietyofbusinessesthroughoutitsyears.Inthe1980s itwastheof ceoftheMadisonCounty Recordnewspaper,andlaterithoused theMadisonChamberofCommerce.It alsowastheof ceofMadison’sWater Departmentforaperiod.However,the interiorfeaturesstillincludetheoldsafe ofMadison’s rstbank,incorporated in1905.Thesafeisactuallymorelikea multi-levellargecloset-sizedvaultroom thatincludedsmallercompartmentssimilartosafedepositboxesoflatertimes. Theentranceintothesmallroomwas throughaheavyandthicksteeldoorsupportedoneightpointsofthicksteelbar pinswithaccesscontrolledbyaMosler lock.Annualinspector’sstickersfrom the1920sandlaterverifythelock’sintegritythroughmanyyears.Thestickers werestillattachedinsidethevaultatthe timeofmyownlastvisitafewyearsback. Behindthe rstvaultdoorwasalockable doublepanelsteeldoortobeopenedbeforeenteringthe nalroom,whichcontainedtwosafesencasedinconcrete. ThesetwosafeshadsmalldoorswithVictorcombinationlocks.OneVictormetal plateshowsthelatestpatentdateofthe lockasDecember1,1908. Thebankplacednewspaperadsclaimingthatitwas“unrobbable”andprotectednotonlybythelatesttechnologyintimelocksbutalsobythefamous PinkertonDetectiveAgency.However, inthedraftofanunpublishedbookentitled“Re ectionsofMadison,1869-1999”, GladysTruewroteinhermemoirsthat thebankwasinfactrobbed(oratleast burglarized)in1928.Indescribingsigni canteventsinthetownforthedecade of1924-1934,Gladysusedtheheading “CrispyBills”forthestory.Inherown words,Gladyswrote“The rstbank robberyoccurredin1928attheBankof Madison,whichwasrunbyaMr.Riddle. Actually,whattherobbersdidwasto breakintothebankvaultusingatorch. Someofthemoneyshoweduplater, andeveryoneknewitwasstolensince itborescorchmarksinvariousplaces.” Additionalaccountshavestatedthatthe robbersactuallydidnotcutthroughthe accessdoorswithanacetylenecutting torch.Rather,theybrokethroughthe building’sbrickedbackwallatthepoint wherethesafeswerelocatedandthen usedthetorchtocutintothesafes.That wouldexplainthe“crispybills”ofGladys’account.
Gladyscontinuedwritingthat“WaltonHughesandTommyChristianson hadheardarumorfromHuntsvillethat arobberywasplanned,sotheyposted themselvesonthedrugstorerooftopthe nightitwassupposedtooccur,hopingto surprisetherobbers.Theystayedthere untilmorning,whentheywereconvincedthattherobbershaddecidednot tofollowthroughwiththeirplans.What asurprisetheyhadwhentherobbers cameonanothernightwhiletheywere athomerelaxing.”
Gladys’accountcamefromhernotesof recollectionsof“SeniorCitizensofMadison”,pertheintroductionofherbook. GladysherselfcametoliveinMadison asayoungbridein1933,soherknowledgewasnot rst-handregardingthis event.Besides,storiesretoldoverthe yearsoftengetembellishedorevendistortedasmemoriesfadewithrespectto details.TheBankofMadisonisdepicted inseveraloldphotos,goingbacktoatime whenMatthewHarveyAndersonwasits rstpresidentandGeorgeWashington Wisewasitsvice-president.A1909picturepostcardshowsJohnMullinsBurton(thetownpharmacist)standingin frontofthebankbesideHarveyAnderson.CashiersSiHagerandhiswifeLula areshowninthedoorway.
TheDecember17,1913SpecialIssue ofTheWeeklyMercurynewspaperof Huntsvillewasdedicatedtothehistory ofMadison.Itstatedthatthebankwas consideredtohave“absoluteprotection againstdamageby re,dynamite,or burglary....”Itwasalsoreportedthat thebankcarried“insuranceagainst burglary,hold-up,anddamage”.The 1913articlelistedtheof cersofthebank asG.W.Wise,president;C.C.Green, vice-president;andcashiersMr.andMrs. L.S.Hager.Itfurtherlistedthebank’s directorsasM.H.Anderson,G.W.Wise, HermanHumphrey,T.G.Riddle,F.G. Hertzler,C.C.Green,andL.S.Hager. HertzlerwasAnderson’sbrother-in-law.
ThomasG.RiddlewastheMadison schoolprincipalfrom1902throughat least1914.Healsosoldrealestate,bug-
gies,andharnesses.Hewasateacherin HazelGreenbefore1900,buthewas rmlyestablishedinMadisonbythetime ofthe1910census,havingmovedhere in1901.Thiswasafewyearsbeforethe timewhenthebankwasincorporated. By1920hewaslistedasafarmerinthat census,whilehissonHarryRiddlewas listedasabanker,withbothmenlivingin Madison.In1930Harrywasenumerated on13thAvenueinBirmingham,withhis occupationgivenascollectionsmanager foraninvestmentcorporation.Thomas G.Riddlewasfoundinthe1930censusin thesameBirminghamprecinctasHarry, butseveralblocksaway.Thomas’occupationwasthengivenasasalesmanfor ashirtfactory.Inthatyearthecensus listedhimasage60,married,butliving withouthiswifeasalodgerinthehome ofHerbertandGladysSlie.Therehas beennoconnectionfoundbetweenthe SliefamilyandtheRiddles.Whilethere weresomerumorsthattheRiddlefamily leftMadisonunderacloudofsuspicion, otheraccountscertainlytelladifferent storyofThomasG.Riddle,describing himasacharacterofhighestintegrity, involvedextensivelyincommunitysupportandenterprises.
ProfessorThomasG.Riddlewassaidto beamanintunewithtransitions.In1913 hewasapartnerinMadisonwithDavid N.Teagueoperatingabuggyandharness dealership.Theysoldthe“Banner”modelofbuggies,andthe1913SpecialIssueof theWeeklyMercurynewspaperincluded anarticleclaimingthattheirharness was“thebestavailableformanandbeast (thehorse),usingonlythehighest-grade leathers.”Furthermore,thearticlestatedthat“Youareharnesssafewhiledrivingoverroughroadsifyourharnesswas purchasedfromthisreliable rmofRiddle&TeagueinMadison,andyourhorse willlookgoodandstylishtoo.”
Whilestylishhorseswerenodoubta goodsellingpoint,Riddleunderstoodthe needtochangewiththetimes.HeconcurrentlyranarealestateanddevelopmentbusinessinMadison.Aspartof thatenterprise,hepurchaseda“horselessbuggy”andofferedtotakethosewho wereshoppingfor“realestate,farms, andtownsites”ontoursoftheareaat nochargeinhisautomobile.Thatwas doneinpartnershipwithA.L.Smith. Additionally,inJuneof1913Riddlealone plattedtheCollegeParkAdditionof Madison.Thatdevelopmentofsixblocks oflots,eachlotmeasuringanaverageof 25feetby140feet,islocatedsouthofMill RoadandonthewestsideofSullivan Street.Itincludedstreetsnamedthen asHigh,Riddle,Oak,Pine,andWalnut. TodayPineStreethasdisappeared,and WalnutStreetisnamedPensionRow,lyingonthewestsideoftheRiddleCollege Parkdevelopment.
Yet,therewasmuchmoretothisventuresomeman.Hehasalreadybeen statedasoneofsevendirectorsofthe BankofMadisonin1913.Hewasalsoa state-levelof cialinboththeWoodmen oftheWorldsocietyandtheJuniorOrderofUnitedAmericanMechanics.The formersocietywasnotedprimarilyasan insurancesocietywithsocialfunctions, whereasthelatterorganizationwas(and is)agrouppromoting“virtue,liberty, andpatriotism”–especiallyinvolvedin theeducationofyoungstudents.Their emphasisintheearly1900swasalsoon protectionismofAmericanjobsfromimmigrants,aswellaspromotingteaching theBibleinpublicschools.
RiddlewasborninTennesseein1870 andgraduatedfromWinchesterNormal CollegeinWinchester,Tennessee.He livedwithhiswifeandthree-year-old sonHarryinHazelGreenatthetimeof the1900census,wherehisoccupation waslistedasateacher.Havingmovedto Madisonin1901,hewasstilllistedasa teacherinthe1910census.The1920censusgavehisoccupationasafarmer,but hissonHarry,wholivednextdoorat303 ChurchStreet,waslistedasacashierin thebank.Thomaslivedat301Church Street,andhebuilttheadjacenthouse at303ChurchStreetforHarryandHarry’snewbridein1920.Harrygraduated in1913fromMadisonTrainingSchool (whereThomaswasthePrincipalfrom 1902),andhemarriedMarySteeleinOctober1919. The1913newspaperfurtherdescribed Riddle’simpactonwhatlaterbecame MadisonElementaryandHighSchool. ItstatedthatwhenhecametoMadison, theschoolwasatwo-roombuildingwith twoteachersandatwo-monthschool termforonly30pupilsandlittleschool spirit.Riddlesoonelevatedschoolspiritandincreasedenrollmenttoabout200 pupils,withanine-monthtermtaught by veteachers.Thearticlecreditedthe
school’ssuccesstohisabilityanduntiringenergyplusgettingthetownand peopletosupplementthepublicfunds. A1968issueoftheMadisonCountyRecordnewspaperstatedthat“Professor Riddlewasamostcolorfuleducatorand ruledMadisonTrainingSchoolwithan ironhand.Studentswerenotallowed toleaveschool,evenwithparent’spermission.Thoselivinginthecountryside rodemulesorhorsestoschool.When necessaryforthemtobuysuppliesfrom town,theycouldn’tgo.Riddlehimself
wouldmakethepurchases.Ifapupildid slipawaytothetownshops,thepunishmentwassevere.Punishmentforgirls consistedofstandinginthecornerfor alonglengthoftimeandreadingaloud fromtheBible.Boysweregivenasevere whipping.Thoughstrictondiscipline, Riddle’sprimaryconcernwaseducation.Graduatesfromhistenureincluded lawyers,physicians,bankers,andother highlysuccessfulpersons.Riddle’sapproachtolifewasnotenigmatic.Itwas effective.”
