MADISON–AMadisonteacher isoneoffour nalistsforAlabama’s TeacheroftheYearAward,which willbeannouncedtoday. CoordinatedbytheAlabama StateDepartmentofEducationa panelofaccomplishededucators selectedthe nalists.

“Iamhumbledandhonoredto havebeennominatedfortheState TeacheroftheYearawardandto representMadisonCitySchools andDistrict8,”Brownsaid.“None ofthiswouldhavebeenpossible withoutthecollaborationandsupportofeveryoneinvolved.”

“Together,we’vemadeameaningfulimpactonthelivesofour students,and,forthat,I’mtruly grateful,”Brownsaid.

MONTGOMERY-Rep. MarilynLandslastweek introducedbipartisanlegislationtoexpandhealthcareaccessforpregnant women.Thebill,HB494, theMaternalHealthcare AccessAct,wouldextend presumptiveMedicaideligibilitytopregnantwomeninAlabama.

“InAlabama,many womenstruggletoenroll inMedicaidandareunabletoaccesshealthcare whenthey rstdiscover theyarepregnant.Rather thandelayneededhealthcareuntiltheirMedicaid applicationisapproved, thebillextendspresumptivecoverage,”shesaid. Similarlegislationwas enactedinMississippiin March.

Inastatement,Rep. Landsdescribedtheimportanceofthebill,“The MaternalHealthcareAccessActwillsavelives byhelpingwomenaccess careinthe rsttrimester ofpregnancy.Thislegislationisurgentlyneededto addressAlabama’smaternalmortalitycrisis.”

Seniorcentermembershopefor abigturnoutfromthecommunity toenjoythetalentsoftheyoung musicians.

Ticketsarequitereasonableat $5andwillbesoldattheevent. MadisonSeniorCentermembers shouldregisteratmyactivecenter.

Thiscombinationofameal andmusicwillbeanexperience thatallageswillenjoy,Madison SeniorCenterDirectorLevoneia Ayerssaid.

In2018,theannualeventstarted whenthepresidentofBobJones BandBoosterscontactedthen centerdirectorVickieParkerwith theideaofabrunch.“Ourcenter hasalwayspartneredwiththecity schools,”Parkersaid.“Isawthis asanexcellentwaytopartner withthem.”

Bandparentswillserveatemptingarrayofsweetandsavory foods.Inpastyears,guestsatthe brunchhaveenjoyedbiscuits, avoredcoffees...evenchocolate gravy.

TheBobJonesJazzBrunchnot onlyraisesfundsforthesenior centerbutgivestheteenagersa waytogivebackbyshowcasing theirmasteryofthejazzgenre.

Duringfall2023,thefullmembershipofBobJonesMarching Bandcompetedinseveralmarchingfestivals.JudgesratedBob JonesasGrandChampionat StonesRiverClassicinMurfreesboro,Tenn.;Class7AMarching BandChampionship;andthe ColdwaterClassic.Duringcompetitionseason,BobJonesearned variousawards,suchas“OutstandingMusic,”“Outstanding Visual,”“OutstandingGeneral Effect”and“MostEntertaining Show.”

Iwascominghomefrom Columbus,GA.Ihadspokentoamid-weekchurch gatheringwherethey wereencouragingfamiliestoreconnectafterthis COVIDthing.Therewas anover owcrowdandtableswereevensetupout inthehalls.Iwouldlike tothinktheycametohear whatIhadtosay,butI thinkitwaswantingtoget awayfromtheCOVID-inducedisolationwehave allbeenfeeling,andyou can’tbeatabunchof churchladiesputtingout theirbesteffortsforthe potluck.Afterspeaking, Ishookhandswitheverybodywhowantedtheir handsshakenandgoton mywaybacktoHuntsville. Aboutmidnight,when Ihaddriftedofftheedge ofthehighway,Idecided Ineededsomedrugs,soI pulledintothenextWaf e House,wheretheyhadan abundantsupply.Nextto meintheparkinglotwas anoldLincolnTowncar,I glancedinsideandsawa littleboyandalittlegirl asleepinthebackseat. Attimes,Kellerwasaswimcoach inhisyoungerdaysandin2007 whilelivinginIllinoishewasasked byalocaltriathlongrouptotrain themhowtoprepareforatriathlon.

“ThatparlayedtowhatIdotoday,” addedKeller,whobecameacerti-

Historyofthe “IceHouse”

About1914,the“icehouse”thatstill sitsonthesouthside(railroadside)of today’sFrontStreetwasbuiltbyAlda Florence(“Tiny”)GormleySturdivant’s father,JamesC.Gormleyabouttwo yearsbeforeshewasborn.Afterher marriage,Tinylivedinthehouseat308 ChurchStreetthatislistedinthetaxrecordsashavingbeenbuiltin1910.Her fatherJameswasthecityclerkandrailroaddepotagentatthetimethathebuilt theicehouse.Theicehouseisthename commonlyusedforthedrab,plain-looking,smallconcretestructurebesidethe RoundhouseReplicathatsitsonthesite oftheoldrailroadpassengerandfreight depotonFrontStreet.Atthetimeofthe constructionoftheicehouse,theoriginalRoundhousewasstillstanding(until1936)overthecity’scisternonMain Street,immediatelyeastoftheoutdoor seatingpatiooftheMainStreetCafe. Theoldcisternisalsostillthere.Itis underneaththeoriginalconcretepad withamountingblockontop,wherethe hand-operatedwaterpumpwaslocated. Thecisternhadbeenallowedbytherailroadcompanytobedugontheirpropertyinordertohaveawatersupplyto ght resinthetownalongMainStreet, whichforatimeupto1890wascalled BroadStreet.Similarly,atthattime FrontStreetwascalledRailroadStreet, afterthethirdsetoftracksforloading freightcarsbehindthedepotwasremoved.TherailroaddepotwasthensittingonthelocationoftheRoundhouse Replica.

Actually,JamesGormleybuiltthe “icehouse”with14-inch-thickconcrete wallsasa“producestand”tobeusedto sellvegetablesandothergardenproductsthroughthelargewindowonits southside.Tinytoldthatherfather’s initialplanwastomakemoneyfrom thetrainpassengerswhodisembarked forastrollaroundthetownduringthe shortstationstopshere.Thethickness oftheicehousewallswouldkeeptheinteriorcoolerduringhotmonths,similar tothewaythatcavesareknowntodo. However,soonthestructurewasusedto storeevenmoreicebroughttotownby therailroadforlocalMadisonresidents inthesummer.Thelargeblocksofice wereinitiallyintendedtomoreeffectively“refrigerate”theGormleyvegetables, buteventuallytheicewaslikelyindemandmoresothanwerethevegetables. Naturally,inwintermonthsthedemandforicewasreduced,sothe“ice house”alsobecameusedtostorecoal deliveredbytherailroadforsaleto arearesidents.Coalwasacheap,readily-availableheatingfuel,anditwascertainlyeasiertocollectawintersupply atabout$7pertonratherthantochop treesinto rewoodforheatinghouses andstoresalongtherailroad.Besides, stacksof rewoodoftenbecomethe homeandbreedinggroundforroachesandotherinsects,whereascoaldoes not.Mostoftheoldhomesandstores closetotherailroadusedcoalheatin winter,andsomestillhaveachuteinto abasementlevelwherethecoalwas stored.Thisisthecasealsoforthelarge oldLanford-Slaughter-Camperhouse at7400OldMadisonPike,aboutamile northoftherailroad’stracks.That magni centhousesitsontheeastbank ofIndianCreek,justabitnorthoftoday’scrossingbridge.Thehousewas builtinthe1850s,aboutthetimethat therailroadwascompletedthroughthe area,andtheearlyfamiliesinitmay wellhaveobtainedtheircoalfromthe ElkoSwitchdepot,neartoday’sGate9 intotheRedstoneArsenalpropertiesat thesouthendoftheLanfordplantation property.Bothrailroadstationstops wereaboutthesamedistancefromthe house,butElkopresentednonecessity tocrossthecreekwithwagonloadsof coalbeinghauledbacktothehouse.

Itmusthavebeenchallenginginthe earlyyearstokeepthecoaldustoffthe iceastheseasonschanged.Inmorerecentyears,thecityhasstoreddrychemicalsandobsoletepaperrecordsplusvariousdiscardedmechanicalcomponents inthestructure,soitiskeptlockednow. Latelyithasbeentheresidenceofmany spidersthathavemadehugewebsinside. Theroofwasnotlongagocollapsingin onelargearea,buttheMadisonStation HistoricalPreservationSocietylastyear paidforaprofessionalrepairoftheroof, soitmaylastmanymoreyears.There havealsobeensomeconsiderationsin pastyearsaboutpaintingtheicehouse differentcolors,orevenaddingmurals ofhistoricalscenestypicalofthetown. Therecentemplacementoftwosuch

muralsonotherstructuresinthetown mayleadtofurtherconsiderationabout theicehouseasasuitablecanvassinthe future.

ThehistoryoftheicehouseisobviouslylinkedverycloselytotheJamesGormleyfamilyandmorespeci callytohis daughter“Tiny”GormleySturdivant. Beforehermarriage,TinyGormleysold vegetables,ice,coal,andticketstotrain travelersatthedepotwhileherfather wasdepotagent.Tiny’sgrandmother MarySullivanwasthewifeofMadison residentWilliamMoodyGormleyand asisterofDr.GeorgeRichardSullivan, anearlyphysicianofMadisonwhobecamethenamesakeofSullivanStreet. Moreover,today’smorerecently-developedSturdivantStreetinMadisonwas namedafterTiny’sfather-in-law,Robert LeeSturdivant.Tiny’sgrandfatherWilliamGormleyownedthelotandhouse at205ChurchStreetforatimeandsold itin1874.Aftermanydifferentowners throughtheyears,thatpropertycame backintoownershipbyTiny’sGormleySturdivant’sdescendants,asfurther mentionedbelow.

In2006Tiny’slifememoriesweredigitallyrecordedfortheMadisonStation HistoricalPreservationSociety.Copies werealsomadeofsomephotosofher familyandoldMadisonscenesthatshe hadcollectedduringherlifetime.In1937 TinymarriedClaudeLesterSturdivant, whodiedin1964.TheyhadsonsJames G.andClaudeLester,Jr.TheSturdivant houseat308ChurchStreetisstillinthe family,asJamesG.Sturdivantstilllives there.Tiny’shusbandClaudewasason ofMadisonMayorRobertL.Sturdivant, whoservedseveralterms,1929-1931and 1934-1940.Robert(1875-1954)wasason ofJohnJ.Sturdivant,whoownedthe landwheretoday’sMillCreekElementarySchoolislocated.Infact,JamesG. (“Jim”)Sturdivant,JohnSturdivant’s great-grandson,namedthatschool,and heservedasaCityCouncilmanover35 yearsago.

Additionally,from1996Charlesand KimSturdivantownedthepropertyat 205ChurchStreet.Thelotsizeislistedas203.9ft.by52ft.,withthe2121sq. ft.houseshownashavingbeenbuiltin 1930,butthatisdebatable.Since2014 CharleshasbeenmarriedtoAmyCatherineBell,andthehouseat205Church StreetisstillinSturdivantownership. CharlesisagrandsonofAldaFlorence (“Tiny”)GormleyandClaudeLester Sturdivant.Tinysoldthe205property toCharlesin1996for$10,asanominal legalamount.Tiny’shusbandClaude haddiedin1964,andTinyremainedin theirhouseat308ChurchStreetuntil shehadtospendthelastdaysofherlife intheMadisonManorNursingHome. HersonJimSturdivant,fatherofJimmyJr.andCharles,wasalsoaMadison schoolboardmember.JimmyJr.likewisebecameco-ownerwithCharlesL. Sturdivantof308ChurchStreetin2014, asTinyhadprovidedwellforherfamily inherownwidowhood.

The205ChurchStreetlothistoryextendsbackthroughownershipbyTiny GormleySturdivant’spaternalgrandfatherWilliamM.Gormleyin1874,butit passedthroughatleast14morechanges ofownershiptogetbackinto“theGormleyfamily”ofTinyGormleySturdivant. Thesechangesofownershipincluded theDecember4,1916,acquisitionby DouglasBroylesfromWilliamS.Russell (sonofMadisonConstableWilliamA. Russell,murderedin1903).Broylesheld thepropertyuntilJanuary4,1919,when hesoldittoMadisonbankerLeeSamuelHager,whosolditonApril21,1920, toLouieG.Collierbeforeiteventually passedtotheSturdivantfamily,probablyafterpassingthroughownershipby PrideandFletcherfamilies.Whilethe househasbeencalledtheBroyles-Sturdivanthomeinthepast,Broyles’own-

ershipwasshort,justbarelyovertwo years,fromlate1916toearly1919. TheconclusionisthatonlytheGormley-Sturdivantfamilyhasheldthispropertyforanylongduration,eventhough itbeenstatedinotherpublicationsthat theyhaveheldthe205ChurchStreet propertysincethe1950s.Nomatter whatmaybethecase,itiscertainthat both308and205ChurchStreethouses havebeencloselyconnectedtothehistoryoftheicehouse.
