WhenAlfredpassed away,aHuntsvillenewspaperdeathnoticestatedin agreementwithhisMapleHill memorialmonumentinscriptionthathediedin LimestoneCountyon January7,1856, at age65, reportingthathewas“...ahighly respectableandhonorablephysicianand gentleman.” Theage reported forhimindicatesthathewasbornin1791, butother recordsshowhisbirth yearas 1789,havingbeenborninthe Wilmingtonareaof NorthCarolina’sBrunswickCounty. He wasevenconsideredso prominentand influentialduringhislifetimethatinan 1837newspaperitproudlyannounced that“DoctorAlfredMoorehas removed toHuntsville”fromhisunincorporated countylands.Hemay have beenmotived tomove intoHuntsvilleto be closetohis brotherDoctor DavidMoore, whodied8 yearsafter Alfred’smove into Huntsville andisalso buried inMaple Hill. While inHuntsville,AlfredandDavid were no doubtlivingamongmanyoftheinfluentialpioneersofthearea.

Dr.AlfredMoore’s daughter Olivia married AlabamaGovernorEdward A. O’Neal, andtheirson Emmetalso became agovernorofAlabama. They werereportedlytheonlyfatherandson toboth serveasgovernorofthestateinthe 1800s. Alfred’sthirdwife,MaryJane Watson, wasa daughterofMatthewWatson.Matthewhad died by thetime of Mary’s 1836 marriage toDr.Moore. Themarriage occurredinRichmond, Virginia, andit wasofficiated by Rev. Richard Channing Moore, accordingtonewspapernotices oftheday. Itisquitepossible thatthis RichardMoorewasanuncle ofAlfred. Alfred’s father Johnalsohad asonnamed Richard, likelynamed suchinhonorof Johnhaving abrother of thatname. The Richard Mooreofthisareadied by 1820 accordingtolandsalesofhis estate on thatdate.
Mary Jane WatsonMooreoutlivedher husband by 36 years, dyingin 1892. She wasco-executorofAlfred’sLast Will& Testament, along with Alfred’s son by Eliza Jones,GeorgeH.Moore, whowas born in1824. Just asAlfred’sland records were sometimesnot recordedinMadison County, this LWTalso wasnot recorded inMadisonCounty.However,in1888the LWTwas referencedastheauthority for GeorgeH.andMary J. Mooreentering into an 1858sale ofAlfred’s two-acrelot in Huntsville on“Pope’sHill” along McClung on thesouthedgeofMapleHill Cemeteryto Reuben Chapman, whowas aGovernorofAlabama. Marymay have usedproceedsfromthesaleto payfor erectionof the familyobeliskin the Ma-
pleHillCemetery. Thereisatleastone itemof famein DoctorAlfred’slifethatheprobably wished hehadneverexperienced. That wasin1839 when the statelegislatureprovided$10,000to undertakeimprovements forthenavigabilityofthe Paint Rock Riverforcottonshipping.Later yearsincorrectlyapplythis project tothe Flint River, butthatisdefinitelynot the case. Commissioners were appointedfromthe threecounties thatwouldbeaffected by commercial trafficonthatriver--Madison,Marshall, and Jackson Counties.Of course,AlfredMoorewas the commissionerselected forMadisonCounty’sparticipationintheproject.
Thecommissionersdecided to have the large trees cleared fromalongthebanks ofthe river, so thatthe trees wouldnot laterdieand fallintothe river, blocking navigation. This wasdoneunder the assumptionthatfelling themintothe river would getthem floateddownriver during the Spring floods.Unfortunately, the flood stages were insufficient forthe job,and thetrees justjammed the channeland stayed inplace formanyyears.Evenin the1880s when JudgeThomas J. Taylor wrotehisbookof the historyofMadison County, hehad scathing comments about theboondoggle, reportingthatthestream wasuseless fornavigation, swimming, seining, fording, oranyotherpurposefor several decades.
JudgeTaylorfurtherpointedoutthat therewas agreat increase in sickness from water-borne diseasesasmosquitoes thrivedinthe resultantbackwaters. The stagnantareas produced foulsmells into Taylor’sowntime. While this same account has inmoderntimesbeentoldas occurring on the Flint River, JudgeTaylor’saccount ismorelikelycorrectsince the Flint Riverwouldnotaffect thethree involvedcounties, and Taylor’saccount includedthe namesof the commissioners foreachcounty.Thecommissioners’misjudgmentalsolikelyaffectedDr.Moore himself to some degree, asheinthe 1840s hadseveralcotton shipmentssent downriveronthe Tennessee through Fearn& Donnegan.
Historyshows thatthereisevenamemorial to DoctorAlfredMooreandhis familyinstalled intheChurch of the Nativityin Huntsville.Datafoundin the archivedcollectionofDr.Frances Cabaniss Roberts at the UniversityofAlabamain Huntsvilleincludes alistingofgiftsand memorialstothe church.A statue was donated by Ella Mooreinthenorthwest corner“giveninmemoryofher parents, DoctorAlfredandMaryMoore” in1877. Also,a windowinthe church’s tower wasdonated “inmemoryof Mrs. Alfred Moore” by her brother,A.A.Watson. Around 1859 Hugh N. Moorewashired as abuilder inthe church forconstruction efforts. Dataitemsinthe RobertsCollection showchurch memorials forCatherine Moore(1812 -1847) and achildLorinda whodiedin1843. Thememorialsmay well have beendonated by Hugh. Such datadiscoveries maysomedayprovide additionalknowledgeaboutthe Moore familiesof the areaandprovideadditional awarenessofAlfred Moore’s particular contributions to historyhere. However, Alfredhas remained relatively “lost in history”compared to hismuchmore acclaimedbrotherDr.David Mooreof Huntsville.Still,it would be nice to know whyAlfred’s first twoknownwives, and perhaps some of their childrenor even Alfred’s father, wereburied in western MadisonCountyon landwhere hehad no known recorded ownershiportitle.

One thing Iespeciallytreasureis seeing my belovedinteract withthe kidsandallthe workers.Decades ago, ourpastor,Steve Rice, said, “Howthe pastorgoes, the church goes.IfhelovesSundaySchool, the church willlove SundaySchool. Ifhe lovesVacation Bible School, the church willlove Vacation Bible School. Andonandon.”That’sso true.Mybeloved-ourpastor-loves VBS. He knows it changeslives. Healsoleads TheChickenDance.
That’s not life-changing, butsureis fun. Thekids, and quite afew adults, lose their minds temporarilyaswe end withit eachnight.
This evening, theplan of salvation wasshared. We had prayedfor weeks thatkidsandadults wouldacceptthepreciousgiftof God’s Son.
That’s what we had learned about, crafted about, and sung about. Seven boys andgirls, rangingfrom third througheighth grade gave their heartsto Him! We arepraising the Name of the Lord! If youhaveserved in VBS this year, orany year, thank you, thank you, thank you.Itmakes adifference!
