Lessonsfrom theOlympics
By DAWN REED
Watchingthe openingceremoniesofthe Olympics reminded methatwelivein asinful and dying world.Shocked, evenhorrified at someof thethingsdisplayed, Irealized againthatlostpeople act like lostpeople.
While Ihavebeen deeplyburdened about thelostness ofAmericaandherdisregardforGod, Ihad forgotten about the depravity of the rest of the world. It’s agood time topraythatthenationswillturnto the Lord. And prayfor foreignmissionariesas they faithfullysharethe goodnews abroad.
Also, as IwatchedtheOlympic women’s cyclingtimetrials,Iwas reminded what awimpI am.
First,it wasraining. Ilikethe rain butonlyifI’minsideand dry. Iwouldn’thave even beenoutsidein Paris.Yet,the women cyclists faced thenasty weatherridingskinny bikeswithpencil-thintires.They road 20miles.
AmericanChloeDygert hadalreadyovercome acareer threatening injury, thenanAchillesinjury, and aboutof COVIDnottoo long ago.I wouldhave stayedinthebed.
As Chloerounded acurveonthe slippery road, shewrecked, hitting thepavementhard. Butshegotup andgotbackonthatbike, finishing with abronzemedal. Countless cyclistspressedon, bloodyand bruised. Though Iamnotan athlete,I,too,

am in arace.Youmaybeinonealso. Ourracebegins when we give our hearts and livestoJesus.Wemay fall or become injured, butGodwill give usthestrengthto presson. In Philippians3:14, Paulwrote,“Ipress on toward the goal to wintheprize forwhichGodhascalled me...” This pressingonisnoteasy. Therewill behurdles andhigh jumpstoget over, watertogothrough. As inthe Olympics, wemay feel likethe whole worldiswatching…and judging.
If we chooseJesusto beourCoach, if we let. Him.He willencourage us, andhelpuspersevere, evenwhen we feellikethrowinginthetowel-or the wholebike.
Hebrews 12:1 remindsme thatIam to“runwithperseverancethe race markedout forme.”Thatmeans Iwon’t quit. Won’t even THINK of quitting.WhenI’mtired.WhenI’m hurt. When Ican’t see theending. Withperseverance.

Away fromschool, Gilmoreenjoys shopping, spendingtimewith family/friends ...and agood

AnothernewMAAP administrator,Kara Lawrencehas been teaching fifth-graders at Heritage Elementary School. “I have been teaching for10plus yearsand spentthose yearsinthird- and fifthgrade classrooms,” she said. Now, she is workingas the newMAAP at ColumbiaElementary School. Lawrence fillsthe slot formerly held by Kelcie Thomas, whoisnowAssistantPrincipal at Madison Elementary.
“I amthrilledtojoin theColumbiaElementary Schooladministrative teamthis yearandcannot waitto servestudentsin thisnewrole,” Lawrence

“With thenewsystem, wecanhave over100people workingoutand still meet the clean air requirementsper ASHRAE standard.”
Thesystem hastwo majorbenefits. The firstis removingairborne contaminantsincludingthingslike wildfire smoke, COVID, fluand RSV. Thisisaccomplishedthrough filtrationand dilution,or by bringinginoutsideair.Theother major benefitisreducingtheCO2levelin the room.
“Removingairbornecontaminantscan effectively be accomplishedon apersonal levelbyproper useofhigh efficiency N-95 masks, butmaskscan be uncomfortable forworkoutsandfewerpeoplewear themanymore, so we filteralltheair inthe building,” Joesaid. “Asfaras CO2levels, before the DOAS(with only theconventionalHVAC)we were measuring numbers above3000 ppmand numbers above1000ppm arenot safe forprolonged periods. WIththeDOAS,weonlyspike 1000 ppm forour biggest adult classes for ashortperiod.”
Joesaysthe responsefromtheir students and staffhas been great. Theirstaffstill wearmasksas aprecautionandmanystudents arehappy to work out withoutmasks.
“Manystudentsand parents have letusknowhow importantitisto haveasaferenvironment fortheir kids,” Joesaid. “Lotsof families have someoneintheir group who

is at risk forbadoutcomes from COVID.Weprideourselvesinbeing inclusive, thatmeans making the placeaccessibleand safe forall.”
Thereisnot adoubt that thenew air qualityismaking apositive differenceinthelivesoftheirstudents and employees becausethe very sentiment ofmaking apositive differenceis acorepartofthe martialarts school’s foundation. Alookonthe school’swebsitestates,“make apositive differencein thecommunity… oneBlackBelt at atime.”
“Tousyou don’tjustearnaBlack Belt, youbecomea BlackBelt. It’s thethings youlearn andthe way yougrowasyou earn aBlackBelt thatmatters,” Joesaid. “Weteach ‘lifeskills.’ Thepremise isthatanythingcan be taught as askill, so things likefocus, discipline, respect andconfidencecanall be taught and arethereforeskills. When we developthose skillsinour students,it’s likedroppinga stoneina pond. The ripplesspread outinto the broader community. Our clean air focus is anotherlifeskill. Itshows that we valuehealth, whichisfundamental tosafety.”
The31-year-old business currently serves150 active members anda staffoffour.TheAlexanders are hopefulto getthestudent population backtopre-COVID numbersof350 and feelinstallingthe DOAS system willhelpachieve thatgoal.
NowthattheAlexandershave
reduced theCO2 intheir building by two-thirdsduringtheir busiest classes, they want to help others do thesamebyworking withlocal businessesandschools toimproveair qualityintheentireMadison community.
“Itotallyunderstand thatmost small businesseswillnotspend the money fora DOAS, butupgrading filtersinexisting HVAC units, adding HEPA filtersand even monitoring CO2 inofficesand classroomsis within reachofalmost everyone,” Joesaid.“It wasextremely frustratingtoseethat theremust bea technicalsolution totheindoorair qualityand notknowhow muchair to cleanor howtolower CO2 ina waythatprotectedthe buildingand preservedair conditioning. We’ve doneitand we hope to sharethe informationsoothers canmakesimilarimprovements.Inthe long run, exposurehas acumulative effect on people’s health andlessexposure would meanlessofaneffect.”
TheAlexanderswilldo wellin spreading themessage of cleanair qualityinthecommunity. It’sas simpleastheir approachtoself-defense:commonsense,avoidanceand resistance.
“Commonsensetells usnot to walkdowndarkalleysinanunfamiliarplace.Likewise, common sense wouldsaydon’tbreathethings that could injureyour health,”Kristen said.
