greet students/staff when they relocate from the Madison City First Class PreK Center next to Rainbow Elementary on Nance Road. Moving the PreK to the former WMES campus will greatly increase the district’s PreK capacity as MCS seeks additional classroom units from the state. “The West Madison building has been closed since we opened Midtown Elementary

for the 2021 school year,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols. “We all know how important PreK is and that it gets kids off to a great start and makes them prepared for kindergarten. I can’t think of a better place to start that foundation with our kids than at West Madison which has such historic ties to Madison.” West Madison Elementary See WEST MADISON Page 4A

MADISON – Last week’s Madison City Council meeting doubled as the last official public hearing for the redistricting process. The redistricting process has been ongoing since the spring when Slaughter and Associates, the firm contracted by the city to balance the populations of Madison’s seven districts, was awarded the contract in May. The results of the 2020 census showed a disparity of population between the districts that exceeded federal requirements, prompting the redistricting process. The process continued when Slaughter and Associates presented an initial plan at a public meeting on July 17. A second plan was then presented for council feedback at a council meeting on Aug. 14, and a third version was presented to the council at the Aug. 28 work session. That third version was presented to the public at the Oct. 9 city council meeting. Mike Slaughter of Slaughter and Associates explained the equal distribution required by law that he and the city were aiming for with the new map, “Equal distribution is considered to be a total population deviation of 10% or less between the smallest and largest populated voting districts as compared to the ideal population.” The public was invited to comment on the proposed map, and several individuals expressed concerns with the separation of some subdivisions as well as the lack of special representation for Limestone County residents. “We’ve been through maps now, and each time we’ve asked you to draw a line or put one neighborhood back together, then it had a domino effect, and there was another one,” city council president Ranae Bartlett responded. “There doesn’t seem to be a way that we can draw a map that every neighborhood stays completely together because you’re using blocks.” “I don’t think we could in reality avoid splitting neighborhoods in a city See REDISTRICTING Page 4A

Madison Witches Ride, Roll & Stroll to be held Sunday By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON - Halloween may still be almost two weeks away, but wispooky, and not-so-spooky, witches will descend on Madison this Sunday. The second annual Madison Witches Ride, Roll & Stroll will be held Oct. 22 at Journey Middle School, 217 Celtic Drive in Madison. “This premiere event brings together members of the community for a great cause. Organized by Madison Visionary Partners or MVP to benefit the Madison Splash Pad fund, there has never been a better way to showcase

your Halloween spirit,” MVP Executive Director Melanie Thornton said. Madison witches will fly off on their brooms (or bicycles as improvised transportation) for their one-mile route. Witches will line up for their parade from 2:45 to 3 p.m. Then, they’ll take flight (hmmm . . . walk or ride) for their destination at Home Place Park, 130 Shorter St., east of Madison City Schools Stadium. The witches will throw candy to children along the route. From 4 to 6 p.m., the Black Cat Block Party will entertain the crowd with children’s games and See WITCHES Page 4A

MADISON – An injured veteran from Madison received a fully customized all-terrain wheelchair on behalf of one of the nation’s premier military support organizations, Freedom Alliance. U.S. Army Major Anthony Maggert defended our nation by serving 23 years in the military: four years in the Marine Corps and 19 in the Army. He deployed to Iraq in 2003, 2005 and 2009 and to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2017. Anthony sustained a wound in Afghanistan that led to 39 surgeries and the eventual amputation of his leg. He medically retired in 2018 and anticipates additional operations on his leg. Known for his positivity and ‘You have to do good all of the time, even when you think people aren’t looking’ approach to life, Anthony continues to look for ways to make each day and himself better. He attended culinary school and currently runs a family-owned local sausage business. Tom Kilgannon, President of Freedom Alliance, presented the customized chair to Anthony. “In honor of Anthony’s selfless service and sacrifices to protecting our freedoms, we are honored be able to present him with the gift of this chair,” said Kilgannon. “We pray this chair not only provides him with enhanced freedom of movement but that it serves as an ongoing reminder of our unwavering support and respect for his service to our nation.” “Freedom Alliance has

as large as the city of Madison, and this is very common,” Slaughter asserted. Allegations were also leveled by members of the public at the council influencing the lines of the map in order to prevent a person or persons from voting or seeking office. Slaughter responded to this claim assuring, along with council president Bartlett that all dialogue with the council was public and not intended to have that effect, “This redistricting is for the one person one vote principle with taking in mind the impact on the minority voting strength. It is not to block anyone from voting, being elected, or anything like that.” “I assure you I haven’t been asked to do any redistricting that would disadvantage anyone in any way,” he added. The map presented at this council meeting is expected to be presented at the Oct. 23 city council meeting for a vote and official adoption. In other business… Home Place Park and Kids Kingdom Park received significant funding at Monday’s council meeting. The council accepted a donation presented by the Madison Visionary Partners on behalf of the

Rotary Club for a total of $15,832.70. “From what I understand that’s been a joint effort…with MVP kind of leading the charge on collecting money for the Home Place Park, and I think Rotary was going to give $50,000 total. So, this was one of their first installments. We’d just like to thank them for that,” Councilman Greg Shaw said. The Kids Kingdom Project received $53,390 for the purchase of artificial turf. The council also went forward with approvals for regulations for murals and the establishment of a Mural Advisory Board. The former amended Chapter 8 of the City Code to include verbiage and specifications for murals and required permits and consultation with the city on the development plan and maintenance plan of each mural. Development and maintenance plans are subjected to review by the newly formed Mural Advisory Board, which is comprised of five members, who must include at least “one experienced businesses executive and one employee of the city.” Members will serve two-year terms. The next city council meeting will take place Monday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in city hall, 100 Hughes Drive.

MY LIFE AS A HOBBY

Let’s get rolling By JOE HOBBY Columnist

I was talking to a friend‘s daughter at a high school football game. When I asked her if they had any special Homecoming activities on tap after the final whistle blew, she said sweetly, “We’re going to roll some yards. It’s a tradition.” I smiled and nodded. Rolling yards was a regular part of my teen years too. I’m still quite immature, but I gave up rolling yards a while back. Besides, after my shoulder surgery, I just don’t have the arm strength anymore. The interesting thing about rolling yards and other forms of relatively harmless teen-age mischief, is that it was usually reserved for people we liked. I read an article about the psychology behind pranks, and some learned people believe that their purpose is to socially connect and strengthen bonds with others. I can believe that. If someone rolls your yard, they’re interested enough in you to take the time, energy, and risk to one-up you. The more destructive forms of tomfoolery, such as putting cherry bombs in mailboxes, or grooving someone’s lawn, were saved for unpopular students and nasty teachers. And generally speaking, throwing eggs was considered an act of destruction, because we knew they could really mess up the paint job on a car. Once, a group of us decided that rolling a popular girl’s yard would be an excellent way to spend a Friday night. Susan’s house had been TP’ed many times before, so we decided to make this one memorable. All of us split up and hit every public restroom within an 8-mile radius. Armed with almost a hundred rolls, we

stealthily spent about a half hour throwing 2 ply paper in trees, shrubs, and over the house. The next day when I drove by to check our handiwork, I was stunned. Every inch of her property, including the roof, was covered in white. It looked like New England in February. The trees and lawn were so white that her neighbors went out and bought milk and bread. Fortunately, they didn’t try to clean up the mess by burning the toilet paper off the trees. I knew someone who did that and had to call the fire department when the TP set the dry leaves on a Bradford Pear ablaze. I’m still amazed at how imaginative teenagers can be when playing pranks. My wife told me how some of her “friends” showed their fondness towards her by strewing thousands of soda bottle caps in her front yard. Very innovative. She had no idea where they came from, or how they got so many; she just knew that she and her brother spent the next day raking the up the mess. Once our gang “borrowed” all 18 flags from a local golf course and planted them, once again, in Susan’s yard. That’s how much we liked her. And now I’ve discovered that yard rolling is still alive and well. It gives me a warm feeling to know that an adolescent rite of passage has continued throughout the years. Not surprisingly, this generation has even added a few new twists, like spraying silly string on cars, strewing Fruit Loops all over the yard, and “forking”, which involves buying hundreds of plastic forks and sticking them in the ground throughout the homeowner’s property. Smearing Oreo cookies on car windows is also in vogue. While I appreciate the creative thinking, I found it a bit pricey. You could drop 25 bucks on two dozen cans of silly string See HOBBY Page 8A

Chocolate Caramel Apples

Oh so sweet and delicious, these chocolate caramel apples are perfect for Halloween By CHRISTY JORDAN SouthernPlate.com MADISON - These gourmet caramel apples make for a fun addition to your next party or to prepare a batch to give to friends or family. No one can say no to a crunchy apple drizzled in caramel or chocolate. The best part about this recipe for chocolate caramel apples is you can let your imagination run wild. Be traditional and stick with caramel, or dip them in chocolate, candy, crushed Oreo cookies, cinnamon, mini marshmallows, or chopped nuts. The choice is yours! Recipe Ingredients • 5-7 small to medium apples washed, dried and refrigerated • popsicle sticks

• 12-ounce bag of dark or milk chocolate chips about a cup and a half • 14-ounce bag Kraft caramels unwrapped • sprinkles chopped nuts or candies of your choice (optional) • Waxed paper and cooking spray The night before, wash apples, remove any stickers, and place them in a bowl in the refrigerator to get cold. Make sure your COLD apples are clean and dry, then put a popsicle stick in each one. Unwrap enough caramel candy to fill up a 2-cup measuring cup 3/4 of the way. Add one tablespoon of water. Microwave for one minute. Stir. Microwave for one more minute and then stir again until smooth. Please note: I am hesitant to post recipes involving the microwave because they vary so widely in how

they heat. If your microwave tends to be hot or higher-powered, check your caramels after 30-45 seconds and stir them. If, after two minutes, the caramels are not melted fully, cook them in 30-second intervals until they are. Now, baptize the apple in the melted caramel! Note: You can skip the caramel and just dip them in chocolate if you like. My kids prefer these without the caramel. Place all of those on a waxed paper-lined tray and MAKE SURE you spray that baking sheet with cooking spray BEFORE you put your apples on it. Otherwise, they will absolutely not separate from it when you pull them off and you’ll end up with caramel apples bonded to waxed paper on the bottom. At this point, you need to place See APPLES Page 8A

Triana Crossroads Festival will entertain and educate with attractions for all ages By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com TRIANA – Residents of the Town of Triana are anticipating an upcoming festival that will offer a cookoff, children’s amusements, storytelling and a serving of history from the Smithsonian Institute. The 2023 Triana Crossroads Festival will be held at Triana Flamingo Park on Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “We hope to see you on Oct. 21st,” Triana Mayor Mary Caudle said. Triana Historical Society is hosting the event. Backyard grill masters can apply their know-how in cooking out with a BBQ Cookoff. The festival will include a twomile run for people who are energetically inclined. Volunteers will share valuable bits of history at storytelling stations. The topics will include facts about the Tennessee River that flows adjacent to Triana, the establishment and sustenance of Triana Health Center and a glimpse of the center’s ongoing history.

Visitors can buy raffle tickets for a chance at merchandise. A car show will please all ages with an impressive collection of vehicles. Amusements for the children will include sack racing, creating an original piece of artwork, face painting and more. As music pumps up the crowd, vendors for food and ‘crafty’ items will attend the festival. The audience can learn about Cherokee Nation Red Wind. Before arriving in Triana, the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “Crossroads: Change in Rural America,” stopped at four other Alabama towns. A partnership between Alabama Humanities Alliance and the Smithsonian are providing the exhibit. “Crossroads” examines the evolution of rural life during the past century and explores the ways that Americans have adapted. The exhibition studies transition of America’s rural population from a majority to a minority after people moved to cities. Transition for Triana involved the town’s “rejuvenation” in 1964. The people behind the Rotary Club’s Dead Parrot’s Society Bash The bash is planned for Oct. 28 at NOW Soccer Academy in Madison By MARIA RAKOCZY maria@themadisonrecord.com MADISON - The Dead Parrot’s Society may not be real but the Rotary Club that puts on the Dead Parrot’s Society Bash every year is very real, and it’s filled with hard-working and community-minded individuals who are driving forces behind projects that strive to improve the quality of life around Madison. The Rotary Club of Madison’s fun, spine-tingling Dead Parrots Society Bash will be held on Oct. 28. The Rotary Club hosts the event as its major fundraiser to continue its ‘service-over-self’ commitment to provide charitable services both locally and internationally. The bash will welcome guests from 6 to 11 p.m. at the venue, NOW Soccer Academy at 147 Westchester Drive, Bldg. E in Madison. Tickets are available from eventbrite.com, The Rotary Club of Madison is the local chapter of the national

and international Rotary Club organization that was founded in 1905 to improve communities through charitable initiatives. Founded in 1999, the Madison chapter has been active for over twenty years and in that time has supported countless city improvement projects from supplying Thanksgiving Day meals to Madison students and veterans to fundraising for municipal projects, such as Kids’ Kingdom Park and Home Place Park renovations. The club has a special emphasis on youth outreach that includes a KTECH scholarship, Interact Clubs at both James Clemens and Bob Jones High Schools, and the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Melissa Gibson, co-chair of the Dead Parrots Society Bash, credits the Rotary Club’s Youth Director, Fire Chief David Bailey, for the chapter’s thriving focus on uplifting the youth of Madison. “Our youth director, Chief

Bailey, he just has such a passion for youth,” Gibson said. “He just exudes all that, just loves young people and pouring into them, and he’s really taken a lot of time to meet with the schools and find out exactly where their needs are. So, this year we want to really focus a lot of our funds to go to those kids that need some extra help.” People like Chief Bailey make the Rotary Club’s initiatives successful and enriching for the Madison and North Alabama communities. “Everyone has to pitch in in volunteer organizations,” Tom Florence, the co-chair along with Gibson for the Dead Parrots Society Bash, said. “Rotary is full of people with past careers, a lot of time and talent, and it’s a pretty great group to interact with. Everyone at Rotary has a lot of leadership capacity on their own, and when we pull a large group of people like that together, it’s pretty easy to make things happen.”

for the Dead Parrots Society Bash for 2023. “I was actually selected, I suppose. Sometimes you volunteer and sometimes you’re volunteered and this year I was volunteered,” Florence joked. “I was the chair a couple of years ago so I have a lot of experience with the event. Certainly, I was happy to step in and help Melissa wherever I could.” The Dead Parrots Society Halloween Bash is the biggest event for the club every year. For the planning committee and chairs, it’s a nearly year-round commitment. “We typically choose the leadership for the following year within a month of the event. We’ll get together and have a meeting of all the past chairs of the event and sort of have a conclave and choose, or actually invite, who we think would make a good chair for the event. They have eleven months to pull the event together. Usually, the planning starts in earnest about six months ahead of time. That’s how long it takes to pull it together,” Florence explained. The chairs, with the help of other committee members, are tasked with working out the details of the venue, entertainment, format, coordination with the city, and more. “We always have to coordinate with the city. They help us out with quite a few things. We have HEMSI on standby. We have to arrange parking for a large number of people. So, there’s a lot of coordination with different people like the venue owner, any food vendors,” Florence said. “It’s an all-hands-on-deck event for the cub every year. The planning requires the committee chairs, and there are probably about fifteen to twenty people involved in the planning phase, but during the execution, when we have to just stand up the venue and prepare it and then work the event and take

it down afterward, that is definitely all hands on deck.” Gibson added, “We have 10 members on the planning committee. Each member is over a specific area of the event. Although there are 10 members on the planning committee, this is an all-hands-on event. All our members come together to pull it this off. The committee chairs all build a team to ensure everything in their specific area is completed.” Florence and Gibson may be leading the charge, but all Rotary members certainly pitch in any way they can. Sponsorships are especially where other members get involved in partnering with local business owners to acquire vital supporting sponsors for the event. According to Florence, “It’s still organic. We don’t outsource our fundraising. So, it’s really dependent on members reaching out to the people they do business with in the community, the people they know, and work with them to bring in the sponsorship contributions.” Sponsors make the fundraising aspect of the event possible because the bash is not only a fun party but is also responsible for raising the funds for the club’s charitable and community outreach initiatives. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event benefit all the club’s charitable initiatives. “The sponsors are crucial in making our event a success. Their donations to our foundation is very important for the success of our projects, but also their attendance and them sharing the event with their employees, friends, and family make our event successful. We want the event to be fun for everyone, especially our sponsors,” Gibson said. The event has been a Madison Rotary Club tradition for many years but recently shifted gears into a Halloween costume party. After the pandemic forced a hiatus of their

annual fundraising event, originally called the Parrots of Caribbean, the club went back to the drawing board. “We’ve evolved the event since its past,” Florence recalled. “During COVID we decided that we really wanted to redesign the event, change it to a Halloween event, and ever since then, we have organized it as a Halloween costume party. It is evolving somewhat as we look for a winning formula for the event.” This year, Gibson, Florence, and the rest of the committee are putting a twist on the event with music from a live band, JUICE, and food trucks on site. “We’ve tried to do it in an evolutionary fashion every year, not to make a large break year to year, but to try to evolve it and understand how we might make it better, make it more appealing to the people of Madison and the crowd we expect to get together,” Florence explained. There will also be a bar with specialty cocktails, a costume contest, a silent auction, and a haunted house section all in an indoor venue this year. The party will take place on Saturday, October 28 at NOW Soccer Academy. Tickets for the bash are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Visit parrots.madisonal.rotary.org for more.

All About Glass

Glass is a material used to make many different items. It is a very common, inexpensive material, but in ancient times, it was a very pricey commodity only known to Kings and royalty. The oldest glass objects found date back 3,500 years. Glassblowing was created around the time of the Roman Empire which made glass much easier to produce and available to people of all classes. Glassblowing is done with a long, hollow metal pipe. The molten glass is attached to the end of the pipe, and air is blown into the thick liquid, hollowing it and creating a shape. When the piece has cooled, you have what we know as glass. Glass is hard and usually transparent. It is brittle and breaks easily, yet it is very durable against chemicals and heat which makes it a very useful product. The materials that make up glass are sand, soda and lime, all cheap and readily available. Glass has many uses. We drink from glasses, wear eyeglasses to see better, create lenses for our cameras, and make mirrors to see ourselves. Glass slows or stops the flow of electricity, so it works well with electrical devices and light bulbs. Windows and doors of homes are made of glass, and many decorations are hproduced from colored glass.

MADISON - The rain drifted down over Madison City Stadium last Friday night like it was falling in slow motion. The red jerseys of Bob Jones (4-3) with their white helmets shined under the lights as the Patriots carried the pigskin with authority against Sparkman (5-2) at home. The Patriots handled the Senators 31-13 in a classic rivalry matchup that featured an old-school football game of sorts. All of the touchdowns came from rushing plays in this game by both sides. Senior running back Tyren Washington with his two scores on the ground for Bob Jones really got the Patriots off and running. Four turnovers by Sparkman in key spots of the game really shattered the Senators’ hopes of giving Bob Jones a real challenge. This game was marred by a rash of penalties as the officials insisted on flagging every single bit of action which led to an affair full of stoppages and confusion. The referee did not have a microphone so it was difficult for the teams and the fans alike to even follow what all was being called or waved off and finally decided by the stripes. Despite all of the idle time with the yellow hankies on the field, a football game was eventually played and Bob Jones was firmly in control from the onset.

MADISON - Two players from local schools have been selected to represent Alabama in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic football game scheduled to be held Dec. 16 at Carlisle H.H. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Miss. on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Jaylen Brown (DL, 6-6, 240, Sr.) of James Clemens and Reese Baker (OL, 6-5, 285, Sr.) of Madison Academy are part of the 40-player roster for Alabama in the 37th annual contest pitting 40 high school senior football players from each state in the battle first played in 1988. “I’m really excited to play, but I didn’t know anything about this game until my coach (Chad McGehee) told me early in the summer I would be nominated to play,” said Brown, who has committed to sign with the Missouri Tigers of the Southeastern Conference. “This is a special honor to be chosen for this special game with these elite players from across Alabama. I feel blessed and my being named certainly took me by surprise.” For Reese, a four-year starter for the Mustangs and a returning All-State Class 3A selection, his future in football remains up in the air as he has not committed to a particular school, but he has numerous offers including from Auburn, MTSU, Appalachian State, Southern Miss, Army, SE Missouri State, Troy, Jacksonville State, UNA, Liberty, West Virginia and Tulane. With the All-Star appearance comes the chances to be viewed by college recruiters and Reese said he believes he knows what the college coaches are looking for when they see him play. “They tell me they love my feet, my long arms and that I carry my body weight well,” said Reese, who is a monster in the weightroom as he benches 315 pounds, 560 pounds in the deadlift and set a mark of over 400 pounds in the squat. “Reese is an amazing talent. MADISON - The James Clemens Jets (5-3) went down with a 28-7 road loss to Austin (6-2) last Friday. The Black Bears took the 7-0 lead with a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Austin was able to add on to its advantage in the second quarter when Gavin Fuqua broke away for a 40-yard rushing score that made it 14-0 Black Bears. Fuqua struck again before the half on a 29yard scoring run that ballooned the Austin lead to a commanding 21-0 by the midway point of the game. James Clemens wouldn’t get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter when Jets running back DJ Williams took the rock 15 yards to pay dirt for a 21-7 Austin advantage. A 19-yard rushing touchdown by Kenneth Joshua Jr. in the fourth quarter gave the Black Bears even more insurance with a 28-7 score that would stay that way the rest of the game.

A 39-yard sprint by the explosive Bob Jones running back Kenardo Jackson put the Patriots in a great position to answer Sparkman with more points. The rain was falling harder when Jackson streaked 8 yards for the score to push the Bob Jones lead to 20-7 after a successful two-point conversion attempt on a run by Washington with 4:04 to play before halftime. Bob Jones added another score when running back Samuel Monroe broke loose on a 23-yard touchdown carry at the 8:40 point of the third quarter to expand the Patriots’ edge to 28-7. Sparkman turned around and gave it right back to the Patriots when Ward fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Brandon White. Bob Jones took advantage of the third turnover with a 28-yard field goal that made it 31-7 at the end of the third quarter. The Senators, to their credit, never gave up in this game and that started with Jaiden Scott.

Sparkman’s quarterback Josh Ward takes the ball downfield while in hot pursuit. Photo by Andrew Noles (Noles Nest Photography) The speedster Scott, took off for a 63-yard scamper before he was run out of bounds deep in Bob Jones territory. Scott ended up punching the ball in from a yard out to chip away at the deficit 31-13 with 8:32 to play in the game. This game was summed up in the closing minutes was Ward overthrew a wide-open Scott down the left sideline for what would have been a walk-in touchdown with 3:25 remaining for Sparkman. Seven seconds later, Ward threw an interception to Bob Jones Frankie Hill that closed the book on this game. After losing their first three games

of the season with to Muscle Shoals, Athens and James Clemens, the Patriots have rattled off four consecutive victories against Grissom, Huntsville, Florence and Sparkman. Bob Jones next squares off on the road against a formidable Austin team (6-2) who just took down James Clemens this past Friday. Sparkman meanwhile has to go back to the drawing board after back-to-back losses to James Clemens and Bob Jones on the road. Maybe the Senators will just be relieved to get away from Celtic Drive having fallen two weeks in a row at Madison City Stadium. Sparkman returns home this Friday to play host to Huntsville (3-4).

Brandon White Bob Jones’ trombone playing linebacker By BOB LABBE bob@themadisonrecord.com MADISON - Bob Jones football player Brandon White is a young man of many talents. So far in the 2023 season, the 6-foot4, 230-pound senior has played defensive line, linebacker and tight end helping the Patriots in the quest to make the state playoffs in Class 7A Region 4. The multi-talented White, son of Bob Jones head coach Kelvis White, also possesses a talent that many of his teammates are not aware of - playing the trombone. “Yeah, I haven’t really played the trombone in about three years, but I can hit a few tunes on the instrument,” said White, who began playing trombone in the sixth grade after his mother insisted he play the brass instrument. “She forced me to play as I was in band class at Monrovia Middle School and I was taught by our band teacher and I was part of the competition bands. Matter of fact, our band became one of the prestigious bands in the area.” White was one of 10 trombone players in the band which was made up of about 65 members and admitted he was just an average player of the instrument. “I also took piano lessons while in elementary school and I learned how to read sheet mu-

So far, four colleges have offered him athletic scholarships to play football and he’s undecided of his choice and doesn’t plan on signing until after the current season is complete. He has offers from Tuskegee, Alcorn State, Alabama A&M, Southern Illinois State and Shorter University. Growing up in the immediate area of Madison, White played

basketball and baseball along with his efforts in football. Once in high school, he chose to concentrate on his prowess on the gridiron, which has been a blessing. He pushed through an extensive off-season training program to increase his productivity on the field. “For me, I had to do more in preparation for this season as I wanted to play better than I did last year. To do so, I throw myself into plays and making more tackles.” White used to practice playing the trombone one hour a day when he was learning the skills needed to play. His efforts took a

He has a Yamaha brand trombone that cost about $2,000, which he keeps in his room. He only occasionally picks up the instrument and plays. “To play properly, you must have firm lips and depending on the sheet music do you know to blow hard or soft on the notes,” explained White when asked how to play the trombone. “The mouthpiece is similar to a trum-

pet, but much larger. You push the slide outward to lower the note and pull back close to make a higher pitch in the notes.” As for the team, White described the personality of the squad as “We’re very competitive and knows everybody must buy in to make this team work to perfection.” As for the playing of the trombone, White added, “Right now I could play a song, but it won’t be most advanced, but it would be a pretty good song.”

Learning fun was in full display Thursday in Madison City elementary schools with the “Rock Your School” observance. Rock Your School is a national initiative that encourages teachers and schools to create an educational experience different from the typical learning day that makes those teaching lessons more impactful. Things like glow math, sight words, and building a lesson around things like Star Wars or Candyland. MCS teachers are already gifted at making their classrooms fun, effective and engaging. Rock Your School simply brought it to light. Here are some fun photos shared by the Madison City Schools.

For the Halloween Chess Tournament, players can dress in costume as they play on the field at Madison City Schools Stadium.

Costumed players to compete on field at Halloween Chess Tournament By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – Goblins, ghouls and maybe a Grandmaster wannabe will be on the field for the 2023 Halloween Chess Tournament. Madison City Chess League or MCCL will present the Halloween tournament on Oct. 28 at Madison City Schools Stadium, 211 Celtic Drive. Games will start at 10 a.m. “The kids will play chess outside on the turf field,” Nicole Wall said. Wall recently accepted the position of MCCL Marketing and Communications Manager. “For the Halloween Costume Contest, the kids can wear their Halloween costumes while they play,” Wall said. The bright colors of the masquerade outfits against the monotone turf in the stadium will give an outstanding backdrop for parents to take photographs. The Halloween Costume Contest will have five prize categories: “Best Mask,” “Scariest Gloves” (which always have quite eye-catching designs), “Best Chess-Themed Costume” and “Most Creative Costume.” The round times for the tourney will be 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The four rounds will use G/20; d5. Rated sections for the Halloween Chess Tournament will be K-3 or kindergarten through third

grade; K-5 or kindergarten through fifth grade; K-8 or kindergarten through eighth grade; and K-12 or kindergarten through twelfth grade. Non-rated sections will include K-2 or kindergarten through second grade and K-5 or kindergarten through fifth grade. Membership with US Chess Federation is required only for rated sections. Only unrated players can register for the non-rated sections. Registration fee is $20 for MCCL members or $25 for players who aren’t members. For a snack or beverage, Park and Perk will offer coffee. Forever Grateful Food Truck will sell lunch selections. Sullins Eye Care Center is the sponsor for the 2023 Halloween Chess Tournament. Players should register online at madisonchess. com. Registration deadline is Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. Players in Rated sections in places 1 through 10 will receive awards, along with Non-Rated sections for places 1-5. In case of rain, the tournament will move to Journey Middle School. To register, visit madisonchess.com, and click the “Events” menu.

FAITH

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. - Psalm 19:14

Verse of the Week

By DAWN REED

It’s okay to do nothing By BECKY MILLER God’s Lemonade Stand

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 Have you ever caught yourself in the trap of trying to prove your worth by how loaded your calendar is? Your value isn’t in all your busyness but somehow Satan tries to make you feel that way. As I wrote this, I have a dryer full of clothes to fold and put away and a house to clean. I am choosing for now to be still on my living room

sofa and feeling no guilt. I heard that the word ‘busy’ could be an acronym for ‘being under Satan’s yoke’. Hmm. Ponder that. Do you need to slow down? It is okay to schedule a nap so don’t feel bad. Now go rest and relax and think about Jesus! PRAYER: Lord, help me learn to be still in both body and mind and not act like I am trying to set the Guinness Book of World Record for the busiest person. In Jesus’ name. Amen. God’s Lemonade Stand is written by former Madison resident Becky Miller. Her daily devotions appear on Facebook or at godslemonadestand.blogspot.com.

Church Directory

He’s been faithful

There’s a picture hanging in the parsonage that wouldn’t mean anything to you. It’s not fancy, not a Monet, a Picasso, or even a Russell May. In it, a woman stands at a flower cart. A horse-drawn carriage travels a dirt path in the background behind her. The peach colors and muted hues hint that the artwork is decades old. In 1981, I saw it. Loved it. Longed for it. Yet, it was not to be. As teenaged newlyweds, my beloved and I were living on love, soup, and Tator tots. We couldn’t afford the K-Mart price of $8.99. Somehow a week later, he found the money for it. I was overjoyed and immediately hung the masterpiece that was held in a shiny gold frame. It was our first major purchase as a couple. In 1992, we reframed the picture in wood adding a complimentary mat. Over the years, we have carried the woman at the flower cart with us. She has adorned a wall everywhere we’ve lived. So far, she has endured five moves. I smile every time I see her. She reminds me of God’s faithfulness. He has surely brought us a long way. Those two teenagers are now in their 60s. We’ve been through floods, a mini-tornado in 1987, times of great need, times of plenty, two children, foster kids, surrender to ministry, loss of parents

all generations (Psalm 89:1). Oh, that’s MY story. While I can’t belt it out in a public song, my heart and pen are bursting with thanksgiving! The woman at the flower cart is a daily reminder of all my heavenly Father is and what He has done. Do you have reminders of the faithfulness of God, too?

and other loved ones, a pandemic. God has been faithful through it all. Not one single crisis caught Him by surprise along the way. We are daily overwhelmed and overjoyed by His kindness and provision. My beloved preached on the faithfulness of God last Sunday. In the sermon, he mentioned a song we had loved years ago. “He’s Been Faithful to Me” by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir was one of our favorites. I downloaded it on Monday morning, then sobbed my way to work. Memories of victories and rescues flooded my mind. The words “Though in my heart I have questioned, even failed to believe, He’s been faithful, faithful to me,” remind me that it’s human nature to be afraid when things take a turn. Today’s trial or battle may seem more difficult than yesterday’s. But, if we remember Who He is, what He has already done, His heart, AND His faithfulness, we can boldly walk into the day or night knowing He is with us. And will never leave us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Psalm 119:90 reminds us, “Your faithfulness continues through all generations…” It does. The Apostle Paul shared in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “The one who calls you is faithful.” In 2 Thessalonians 3:3, he wrote “But the Lord is faithful.” He is. He is. Ethan the Ezrahite shared, “I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through
