GERALDINE Madison Academy (14-0) punched its ticket to the 3A State Championship game with the 48-43 road defeat of Geraldine (12-2) this past Friday. Only the exceptional high school teams remain at this point of the year and Madison Academy continues to climb that lonely mountain with a perfect record. The Mustangs face Mobile Christian (14-0) this Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Madison Academy’s white road uniforms glowed in relief compared to the dingy brown grass of Geraldine’s field on the first day of December. At this point of the year, most high school football teams are eliminated from contention and firmly into the offseason. Not the Mustangs. Sure, the playoff games have See MUSTANGS Page 4A

MADISON - Last week the Madison City Council accepted the final donation of Madison Visionary Partners for the Kids Kingdom playground renovations. MVP contributed a total of $607,000 to the project, represented by a check presented to Madison Mayor Paul Finley at the playground’s ribbon cutting on November 20. The donation of $492,537.16 made at the council meeting was the organization’s final contribution to the project after two years of fundraising from a total of twenty-six donors that included local organizations and businesses such as the Rotary Club and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing. Executive Director of MVP Melanie Thornton stated about the fundraising process, “In total, we raised just over $600,000 which includes legislative grant money that went directly to the city of Madison. It’s important to recognize that the achievement was the result of a collaborative community endeavor.” MVP worked with multiple organizations including MCDAD and the Madison City Schools to transform Kids Kingdom into an updated and accessible playground. Mayor Finley extended his gratitude to MVP and the city’s teams. “I want to thank Public Works for all the efforts they did while Madison Visionary Partners helped secure $600,000 in funding. A lot of revenue was also saved for the city by what Public Works did for us. I want to thank See CITY COUNCIL Page 4A

MADISON – Tucked in the back left corner of the store is truly a winter wonderland that will touch the hearts of any holiday shopper. It’s a highlight of the holiday season for downtown Madison’s Noble Passage Interiors and is referred to simply as the Snow Globe Room. Snow Globes grace every shelf in the room, giving off light and a low hum that just screams comfort and joy. Because these masterpieces are displayed in a small space, the impact is even more gratifying. “We try to dim the lights a little bit, so they make a bigger impact,” associate Rachel Masterson said. “A lot of times people have never seen this many snow globes together.” The snow globes encapsulate Santa and his reindeer, snowmen, Nativity scenes, ballerinas dancing to the “Nutcracker”, the classic red truck and cardinals. These are not ordinary snow globes. Some are round. Some are captured in lanterns. Some are Christmas trees. Some are in square boxes. And one is in a crystal church with a simple wreath on its doors. “We try to get something for everybody,” Masterson said. “You have the Santa-only classic Christmas or snowmen people and those who are deer people or angel people. I think we have something for everyone in this room.”

The store sold out of its snow globe inventory last year, so they increased the order this year to give customers more choice. Masterson says the crystal church snow globe is a local favorite that sells out rapidly. “The first time we stocked that one, we only got six and within a week

Huntsville City FC hosting toy drive for hospitalized children this holiday season By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com

TOUR - Madison City school board and city council members last week toured the recently relocated PreK Center (above) and the new Journey Middle School (below). The visits served as reminders of the fast growing Madison City school district and needs that lie ahead. Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols highlighted features of each facility along with long and short-term district plans as the entourage made its way through the buildings.

HUNTSVILLE – No kid wants to spend the holidays in the hospital. Huntsville City FC and Huntsville Hospital Foundation are partnering to ensure every Pediatrics patient at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children can receive a special toy this holiday season, and they need our community’s help. Help give joy through a toy at the community drive-through toy drive on Saturday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium (3125 Don Mincher Dr SW, Huntsville). Every donation will be given to Pediatrics patients – from babies to teenagers – this December, and will help stock the hospital’s playrooms to provide distraction and fun for kids while they are hospitalized. “This is a great opportunity to shop with your children and family, and bring happiness to sick kids who can’t be at home with their families this Christ-

mas,” said Chris Hendley, community events manager for Huntsville Hospital Foundation. “Our HHW&C Child Life team goes above and beyond to spread cheer throughout the hospital halls, and they need your help! Every toy and donation will make the holidays brighter for these local children.” “In this season of giving, we’re excited to help give back with the Huntsville Hospital Toy Drive,” said HCFC Managing Director of Business Operations Chad Emerson. “This

event will help kids who can’t be home this year have a happy holiday season. We look forward to seeing everyone come by Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium on Dec. 9 with donations for the toy drive.” All toy donations must be brand new and unwrapped. Top needs include games, craft supplies, puzzles, board books and more. View the hospital’s full toy wish list at www.huntsvillehospitalfoundation.org/ways-togive/toy-drive.

The lighting ceremony for the MADISON POLAR EXPRESS CHRISTMAS TREES ON MAIN STREET was held Friday, Dec. 1, in historic downtown Madison. Dozens of traditional and themed trees are now on exhibit, decorated by businesses, municipal groups, students, churches, and agencies. The City of Madison and the Madison Station Historic Preservation Society sponsor the Polar Express each year. Madison Mayor Paul Finley officially lit the tree trail. Also, for the event Friday, Madison Arts Alliance assisted spectators in decorating Christmas ornaments, the Madison Chamber of Commerce conducted a Children’s Glowstick Parade and Letters to Santa. The Madison City Community Orchestra performed Christmas music. The Rotary Club of Madison served hot chocolate and cookies in the Gazebo. Staff from Madison Public Library read “The Polar Express.” Santa even made an appearance in the display’s large silver ornament that is perfect for photo opportunities. Here are some great photos of the event by Cristie Clark of Captured By Cristie LLC (www. cbcmediaco.com). You can find more on The Madison Record’s Facebook page.

Madison Academy been closer, but that same old team keeps on doing what it takes to win. They looked doomed a week ago against Sylvania, but the Mustangs pulled that one out of the fire. This past week was just another example of why Madison Academy deserves to be playing for it all in Tuscaloosa. The Mustangs were running wild, and it would take every bit of that to extinguish Geraldine or better yet outscore Geraldine in the end.

Continued from page 1A

It would take an 11-yard touchdown run up the middle by Madison Academy’s senior running back Ken Cherry with just 57 seconds left on the clock to take down the Bulldogs. Cherry rushed for 172 yards on 22 carries for four touchdowns while Joshua Williams racked up 143 yards on 19 rushes for three scores on the ground. All seven of the Mustangs’ touchdowns came from the running game, but Madison Academy relied on the passing attack as well to keep the Geraldine

defense honest. Senior quarterback Jack Poldiak was 17 of 24 passing for 276 yards in the game and most of that went to Jackson Reece. Reece was a force when the ball found his hands with 12 catches for 221 yards for the Mustangs despite not finding the end zone. Even though he did not score in the game, it was clear that Reece and the other receivers were helping pave the way for Cherry and Williams on the ground. A 9-yard touchdown catch

from Jaxon Colvin to Owen Walling allowed Geraldine to lead 43-36 with just 5:16 remaining in the game after a successful 2-point conversion. Joshua Williams’ 10-yard touchdown pulled Madison Academy within just a point down 43-42 with 2:44 shining on the clock after a failed 2-point attempt. The Mustang defense was able to make the stop of the season as Geraldine turned the ball over on downs with just 1:39 remaining at the Madison Acade-

my 46-yard line. It would take the mighty Mustangs eight plays and 54 yards across that brown field to send this perfect team to the ultimate final stage. Undefeated Mobile Christian stands in the way of Madison Academy’s Thursday storybook ending at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Leopards most recently eliminated St. James 34-30 this past Friday and secured a Nov. 24 defeat of Trinity Presbyterian 42-21.

YUM!

Some assembly required By JOE HOBBY Columnist

As we approach Christmas, I would like to send a heartfelt wish of good luck to all of you parents out there with young children. You’ll need it. If this is your first time to have Christmas when Santa Claus magically delivers all of the gifts to your house, I am going to give you three words that will strike fear into your heart, three words that I think the Grinch himself personally came up with: some assembly required. Believe me, in a couple of years these will become the most hated words in your holiday vocabulary - right up there with fruitcake. I know, I’ve lived it. And I’m not the first. It’s a ritual that has been repeated for generations. This is the way Christmas Eve will go down: you’ll finally get your children to bed, and it will be late because they’re so excited. You have to wait until they’re sound asleep, which adds at least another hour - then the work begins. There will be all kind of toys: a bicycle, a Big Wheel, a Barbie Dream House, a trampoline, and Lord knows what else. They have to be put together because Santa would never, ever just drop off an unassembled toy. Of course not. Everything had to be fully assembled and I was the assembler. It would help if the instructions were clear, direct, and easy to read - but nooo. It seems like every set of directions is written in a font so small that it would take a pair of jeweler’s glasses to easily read them. If they’re even in English. Honestly, I’ve seen some of them written in Chinese. And the illustrations generally look like they were drawn by 105-year-old man with arthritis. How can I deter-

mine where Bolt A goes if the drawing makes it look like Bolt D? Looking back, I would’ve paid an elf a thousand dollars on the side to put this stuff together. I don’t see how my father survived the Christmas Eve ordeal. He had no mechanical aptitude, the patience of a New York cab driver, and a short temper. One specific Christmas Eve when I was about six years old, I was awakened by a loud commotion in the living room. There was swearing and the sound of a screwdriver hitting a wall. Dad was obviously trying to put together my bicycle and it wasn’t going very well. To be honest, it scared me. I cried out for my mother (who was guarding the living room door), saying, Mom, what’s happening in there? Is everything ok?” With no hesitation, she replied, “Don’t worry honey. It’s Santa. He’s just having a little problem with his Turret’s Syndrome.” We shouldn’t have put out milk and cookies. We should’ve put out bourbon and Coke. Or maybe just bourbon. This year, many of you will learn there’s nothing worse than working feverently from midnight to 4:30 AM on Christmas Eve. Eventually you get everything put together - kind of. I always seemed to have a handful of nuts and bolts left over when I finished putting a bicycle together. Some of them looked kinda important, too. So I made extra sure the kids wore their bike helmet on that first ride. At long last your head meets the pillow at about 4:45, and you immediately fall asleep out of sheer exhaustion. Then at precisely 5:00 AM, you are jolted awake by a knock on your door and a tiny voice from the other side that says, “Mom? Dad? Can we get up now? I think Santa came.” Go put on a pot of See HOBBY Page 8A

Holiday ham

Advice on creating this traditional feast centerpiece By STAFF REPORTS From Family Features MADISON - Bringing together loved ones with classic seasonal meals is a staple of the holiday season, and few centerpieces call to mind childhood memories like a tender ham cooked to perfection. A longtime hallmark of family meals during the holidays, ham can feed a crowd, complement a wide variety of side dishes and is easily elevated with glazes, spices and rubs of all kinds for those who want to take their hosting up a notch. While ham can be the centerpiece of your holiday dinner, it’s also a versatile dish that can be served for any special occasion. Ham is also ideal for incorporating into holiday brunches, served as an hors d’oeuvre at cocktail parties and shared at office potlucks. To help cook the perfect ham for your celebration, consider this advice for a festive feast from the experts at Coleman Natural Foods, which has produced high-quality, all-natural, humanely raised, no antibiotics ever, fresh and prepared meats sourced from American farmers since 1875. Start with a tender and delicious spiral ham, which is pre-cut in one continuous swirl, allowing you to simply cut each piece from the one behind it for even, consistent slices. Set the oven to 250-350 F, keeping in mind lower temperatures lead to longer cooking times but more tender meat. Bake 10-16 minutes

The Fort Moore Maneuver Center of Excellence Band will present its “Moore for the Holidays” concert, which is free to attend, on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in the James Clemens High School Auditorium. Madison City Schools has organized and is hosting the event. A City of Madison release stated that residents can “celebrate the sounds of the season as the 283d Army Band serenades our military and civilian community. The free concert will highlight favorite holiday tunes.” The Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Moore in Georgia delivers trained and combat-ready soldiers and leaders. The institution develops and integrates the doctrine and capabilities of the Maneuver Force. For 50-plus years, the Fort Moore Band has entertained soldiers, military families and civilians of the Fort Moore; Colum-

In 1916 in El Paso, Texas, the musicians organized as the 34th Infantry Band of the 34th Infantry Regiment. The band earned campaign participation credit in World War I at Lorraine, France. The band served for many years at Fort Benning, Ga., until its inactivation in 1940. In 1942, the band reactivated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, aligned with the 136th Infantry Regiment. The ensemble was stationed at Luzon, Manila before another deactivation in 1946. Another restart occurred in 1955 again at Fort Benning. In 2009, the band officially was designated as the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band. Officers in charge of the band are Chief Warrant Officer 5 James M. Bettencourt and 1st Sgt. Robert Leatherbee. Messiah Lutheran’s Ring and Sing Concert set Dec. 10 By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – The “Ring and Sing Concert” at Messiah Lutheran Church in Madison has been so popular over the years that the event is celebrating its silver anniversary in 2023. Noted for its entertaining observance of the Christmas season, the 25th Annual Ring & Sing Concert will be held on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. This free event, known for its mix of upbeat Christmas vocal, instrument and handbell musical works, has become a community favorite. “The Ring and Sing Con-

cert is popular because of the festive music and the casual fun, atmosphere people experience,” Meredith Kilby, Messiah’s Communications and Technical Director, said. “Sharing the joy of Christmas with our community, friends and extended family members reflects our church mission of being ‘God’s People, Reaching Out.’” The concert features works by the Notabella Hand Bell Choir at Messiah Lutheran. 2023 MADISON CHRISTMAS CAPERS Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. on Main Street at the former Hughes Drugstore. The Christmas Capers reprise the legend of ‘Doc’ Hughes tossing live chickens from his drug store’s roof to spectators below during the Great Depression. The chickens had tags attached to their legs, and residents could redeem the tags for prizes in Hughes’ store…and cook the chicken for Christmas dinner. In recent years, the Christmas Chicken Capers evolved from live chickens to rubber chickens with gift cards from local retail stores. Doc Hughes’ grandsons, Larry and Walt Anderson, will re-enact the legend from the old Hughes Drug Store’s rooftop. The City of Madison and Madison Station Historic Preservation Society are sponsors. Madison City Community Orchestra will entertain. Rotary Club of Madison will serve hot chocolate and cookies. Downtown merchants will be open during regular business hours.

holiday parties,” Burrus said. “It’s important for children to know what we do here and that senior life can be exciting and fun,” Burrus said. Throughout the one-hour event, each child received personal instruction from a senior citizen that currently attends the ceramics class at the center. “It was wonderful to interact with the children and to share my love and knowledge of painting ceramics,” center member Sue S. said. “I loved the time with the children,” another member, Margo C., said. “It gave me joy and rejuvenated me.” “As Madison Senior Center plans to move into the renovated Madison Community Center next fall, the possibilities for intergenerational programming is endless,” Burrus said. “Today’s event was a huge success, and it’s just the beginning. IGP is about community and that is the goal of the senior center...bringing people together.”

Baste ham with pan juices and glaze every 10-15 minutes while baking. Remove from oven and let rest 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Vicki K., the center’s ceramics instructor, said she enjoyed the time with the children. “They were attentive and listened well to instruction, and we are already planning to have them back in the spring.” Concerning the intergenerational programming, Burrus has been wanting to offer sessions like this one at the center that would require members to get involved with the community. “When we move to the new facility in 2024, we will have more room to offer a variety of intergenerational programming, such as cooking, sewing, billiards, exercise, jewelry making and more.” “We’ve had a handful of seniors to partner up with the Arise to Read program, which has senior citizens assist second-graders one day a week and help them to read at Harvest Elementary School,” Burrus said. tar work, Lawson and Jackson Beasley started carving out their place in the country/rock music scene in 2015 when they scored their first large music festival slot and opened for the iconic rock band, Kansas. Since then, they have used that momentum to perform 200-plus shows every year. The group has found their signature sound by drawing from classic influences, such as The Beatles and Eagles but fused with the modern influences of Nashville. Jackson and Lawson grew up in Monrovia through their high school years and graduated from Westminster Christian Academy. They lived in Madison while attending the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Lawson earned a degree in business/supply chain management. Jackson majored in physics, minored in business, for his degree. Shortly after graduating, they

moved to Nashville to pursue their music careers. In addition to their Nashville shows, The Beasley Brothers have performed in Kentucky; Ohio, Iowa; along the Eastern Seaboard, including Boston; the Carolinas; Florida; and California. “We love being on the road because we’re always meeting new people and performing in new places,” Lawson said. Lawson is primarily a tenor and Jackson more of a baritone. “Our ranges do vary some, and we’ve been told our voices are very different,” Jackson said. “We both sing and split the vocals pretty evenly.” Lawson fronts playing bass, while Jackson is on guitar. “If people tell us it was a good show, that always helps, but I think we are constantly chasing the approval of ourselves and also approval of the other brother,” Jackson said.

The Beasley Brothers have released three EP’s and eight of their own singles with recent singles featured on major playlists, such as Spotify’s “Fresh Finds Country.” During 2023, they released a new wave of music by drawing from both their North Alabama soul and rock roots, along with their country vibe. After their concert in Madison, The Beasley Brothers will return to their Nashville circuit. Their December schedule includes Luke’s 32 Bridge on Dec. 13, 20 and 27; Jason Aldean’s Kitchen & Bar, Dec. 14, 21 and 22; Tequila Cowboy, Dec. 16; and Miranda Lambert’s Casa Rosa, New Year’s Eve. For the Madison show, ticket prices range from $20 to $25. Their website, thebeasleybrothers.com, has a link to tickets, or visit tickettailor.com/events/thebeasleybrothers/991070.

SNOWMOBILES

Snowmobiling is a motorsport that many people in snowy areas of the Country enjoy during the cold Winter months. A snowmobile is a small, open vehicle that has two steerable skis on the front and a revolving belt on the back. They are usually designed for one or two people to ride. There are both recreational and practical reasons to use one. Snowmobile races are popular. The vehicles are also used when driving to certain places is not possible due to snowfall and/or the terrain. Many ski resorts use snowmobiles to go up and down mountains. National parks utilize them to visit sites during Winter months that cannot be accessed by car because the roads are underneath several feet of snow. Snowmobiles are fun to ride and can be exciting to drive, but as with all activities, safety is the most important thing to consider. Never ride a snowmobile without an adult. Most states require people under the age of 18 to take a safety course before operating a snowmobile. Always wear a helmet, and never navigate them into unsafe places. Enjoy the ride!

“I thought it was a really competitive game,” Bob Jones head coach Jazmine Carr said. “We had a slow start that hurt us, but we showed a ton of resilience in the second half. There is a lot to learn from this game that will help us going forward.” For the fans who turned the environment into a feeding frenzy of noise and excitement, this game brought it all and then some. This edition of Sparkman vs Bob Jones punched like a heavyweight fight with massive shots, battles for the ball on the hardwood and timely defense. The Lady Senators led the game 14-11 after one-quarter of play. Bob Jones was falling behind in the second quarter as the Lady Patriots trailed 27-16 at the midway point. MADISON - It would take four extra minutes of drama as the Sparkman girls edged Bob Jones in overtime 49-45 this past Friday on Hughes Road. The Lady Senators were led by the efforts of senior Abethany James with 15 points and the sophomore Khloe Bradley with 10 in the victory. “I felt like we came out and matched the intensity of the previously played game two weeks ago at Sparkman,” Lady Senator Head Coach Jarvis Wilson said. “We were able to get comfortable on offense early on and maintain our pressure on the defensive end which helped us in transition.” Bob Jones had a strong night from senior Alana Obianozie who collected 14 points while Janiyah Bone ended up with nine in the narrow loss.

Obinanozie followed up that with a field goal to keep the momentum going. “Alana showed a ton of heart in the second half on both sides of the court,” Carr said. “I’m proud of the way she played.” Two free throws by Smith at the end of the third quarter made it 32-28 Sparkman. Obinanozie and her Lady Patriots continued to claw their way back throughout the fourth quarter with clutch shooting as the crowd’s volume began to rise with each moment. Bob Jones tied the game at 39-39 when Obinanozie made a layup with 2:37 on the clock. An Obinanozie shot that See GIRLS BASKETBALL Page 4B

HUNTSVILLE - The 47th annual Rocket City Marathon is set for this Sunday and has become a part of a three-day running event with the exciting Running Expo both Friday and Saturday at the Von Braun Center, the Kid’s Marathon, 5K and 10K races on Saturday with the full and half-marathon races on Sunday, Dec. 10. Dewayne DeBardelaben and his wife, Dana, are in their sixth year as race director of what has become one of the top marathons in the country and top races in the Southeastern U.S. Nearly 3,000 runners have registered including 297 who have a Madison address. “We succeeded in making this a weekend event, and the City of Huntsville loves it,” said Dwayne. “Last year, we had almost 3,000 total to register for the races hosted by the Huntsville Track Club. This year we’ve had a very slight bump in registrations and by race day, we should have 3,000 registered.” The Rocket City Marathon was originally scheduled as the last race of the year to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The course/event has evolved for all runners and includes a start at Big Spring Park, a trek through oldtown Huntsville, through the grounds of both the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and the Huntsville Botanical Gardens before heading back to downtown with a finish inside the South Hall of the Von Braun Center. The 26.2-mile course is certified by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Dana and Dwayne are definitely not alone when it comes to going the extra distance in making the marathon more than just a race of 26.2 miles as it takes a beaucoup of coordinated organizations and volunteers to pull off the See MARATHON Page 4B

playoffs have been nail biters for the Mustangs gaining victories in the final minute of each game. In their latest win, the Mustangs again relied on its star running back to score in the final seconds to secure a victory over the Geraldine Bulldogs. Senior All-State runner Ken Cherry had 188 yards on 18 carries including an 11-yard touchdown with 57 seconds remaining to rally the horses past the Bulldogs 48-43 in the North semifinal game in Geraldine. On the night, Cherry had five touchdowns runs including three in the second quarter and two in the fourth stanza as the host Bulldogs led 43-36 with just over five minutes remaining. Josh Williams posted 143 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries for Madison Academy. His second score cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 43-42. The Mustangs’ defense then held the Bulldogs giving the ball back to the offense with less than two minutes remaining leading to the

final drive and touchdown for the victory. On defense, Madison Academy was led by junior and Mississippi State commit A.J. Rice who had a team leading 19 tackles and Josh Williams who added 11 stops on the night. Besides the two running back’s efforts, the Mustangs’ offense included quarterback Jake Poldiak who threw for 276 yards on 17 completions while Jackson Reece hauled in 12 receptions for 221 yards. The Class 3A Championship Game is expected to be tug-of-war between the two undefeated teams both with rich traditions, high-scoring offenses and tough defenses. The squads are among nine undefeated teams which advanced to the Super 7, but could easily be the most exciting game within the confines of the home of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Conditioning will certainly play a part in the final outcome in what many are calling “The Super Game” at Super 7.

James Clemens soccer standout bounces back from injury and signs with Michigan State By CALEB ODOM caleb@themadisonrecord.com MADISON - It was August 2022 and James Clemens student Jared Smid was playing his first game of the fall season of club soccer for Alabama FC in Charleston, South Carolina when something went wrong with his right knee. The match was on artificial turf and Smid had just torn his ACL. “I realized I was still able to run and jump all thanks to adrenaline,” Smid said. “Yet in the back of my mind, I knew something was wrong.”

Jared’s coach asked him if he could go back in, and the midfielder knew that no was the right answer. Smid was confused about what was going on with his knee and how he couldn’t pinpoint it. When Jared had an MRI on his knee to survey the damage, it didn’t even feel real to him. The months that followed would be full of rehabilitation and hard work to get back to the player that he used to be. Jared remembers that it was even hard to walk let alone think of playing soccer again as he tried to return.

When Jared Smid received a formal offer from Michigan State, he jumped at the opportunity to play in the Big Ten conference against the likes of Michigan and Ohio State and signed with the Spartans on November 8. With the injury coming in August of a year ago, this also meant the end of Smid’s career with James Clemens who would resume play in the spring of 2023. In his two years with the Jets

as a freshman and sophomore, Smid left his mark on the program, and it was crystal clear to his coach at JC Jared Keesee that he was going somewhere. “Of course, he consistently showed high levels of skill with

his touches, passes and vision,” Keesee said. “Which would draw praise even from opposing coaches, but his ability to seemingly be everywhere forced everyone to See SMID Page 4B

Madison Academy’s state title run includes high-tech devices to track performance By BOB LABBE bob@themadisonrecord.com MADISON - New technology continues to infiltrate high school athletics designed to optimize the performance of each student-athlete. One of the latest to incorporate technology, which is designed to provide high-resolution, high-accuracy data devices, is Madison Academy. The Class 3A private school is currently utilizing two forms of data gathering devices for its football program in an attempt to provide answers to fundamental questions of their athletes’ performances by way of health and fitness. Senior running back Ken Cherry is one of 10 on the team to wear a recording device during games which tracks his top speeds, acceleration and deacceleration. Actually, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Cherry is the only Mustang to wear two devices: one from Titan Sports and the second from Catapult. “I put the devices in the special harness I have, and the devices fit on my back,” said Cherry. “Before each game, I place the devices into a charger with the power lasting the entire game. Once the game is over, I place the device back into the charger and it automatically sends the data to the company. Our coaches look at the data and they speak with me about the results.” For Cherry, an All-State performer, the results are fantastic. His top speed during a game is 20.89 miles per hour, which is ranked No. 1 in Alabama. In the Sectional Track Meet last school year, he was clocked at 23.05 miles per hour. “The data we receive is awe-

some,” said Bob Godsey head coach of Madison Academy. “The information the devices provide shows how we can better connect with players as too much workload can cause issues while the device also gives us clues on how to better train our athletes. The recorded information shows how our current training of our athletes is working, or in some cases, not working.” Cherry, who played baseball and basketball as a youth, currently stars on the Mustang’s football team and will again be a force to be reckoned with on the school’s track team in the spring. As a child growing up in Demopolis, Ala., the largest city in Marengo County in South Alabama, he was always the first chosen to play team sports because of his natural speed and in his elementary school, he was always the fastest. “Having the top speed in the state is a big achievement for me,” added Cheery. “I love the fact the devices track my acceleration, top speed and my deacceleration. I’ve

no issues whatsoever while wearing them.” For Godsey and his coaching staff, the recorded numbers mean more than how the athletes are running. “If their numbers are down, that gives us an indication of possible injury or fatigue and can help prevent injuries,” added the fifth-year head coach of the Mustangs. Cody Hughes, the program’s Director of Human Performance and Head Strength Coach is mainly responsible for installing the equipment within the Mustang’s program and likes the latest and popular data-gathering programs. Godsey said Hughes approached him about the devices and agreed the new technology may be a good fit for the team and decided to purchase the programs to assist in improving the athletes. Godsey said more of the devices will be used within the team next season. For Cherry, the data collecting systems are just another way to show he has the speed to compete on any level.

MADISON - The Bob Jones boys basketball team was able to pull away from the visiting Sparkman Senators this past Friday 57-46. The Patriots were powered by the physical presence and strong shooting of the junior Kaden Rickard who led the team with 16 points and Eric Marrow with 14. The Bob Jones sophomore MJ Robinson was lethal from the perimeter with four 3-point shots for 12 points in the victory. Sparkman turned to the shooting of junior Caleb Lightford who finished his night was nine points in the loss. The Bob Jones gym was in an uproar after the earlier girls’ game that had gone to an overtime finish, so there was already a high level of manufactured passion as the boys’ game tipped off. The Patriots had a seemingly perfect start to the affair with a run of 11 straight points to take a stranglehold with 2:37 remaining in the opening quarter. All of the first 11 points came from Rickard and Marrow as Bob Jones marched out to a 13-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Rickard opened the contest with a two-handed dunk and Marrow went up for a slam a

few minutes later with a one-handed dunk that caused the gym to rock. Sparkman began to wake up in the second quarter with several points in transition. Senator football standout turned basketball player Amaree Jabbar was streaking down the court. As Jabbar bolted into the paint, the Patriot Rickard looked to shut down the offensive attack by Sparkman. At the last second, Jabbar dished the ball left to Eli Bannister who put the rock in the hoop with ease to make the score 2116 Bob Jones with 56.1 remaining in the first half. Rickard came crashing down on Jabbar who is built like an oak tree and the result was Rickard smacked the court hard with a thud. The Bob Jones leading point-getter was forced to leave the game for a few minutes as he worked to shake off his sore knee and wrist from the fall. By the midway point of this clash, Bob Jones was up 24-19 with Sparkman nipping at the Patriots’ heels. The Senators continued to fight in the third quarter to keep it close to trail by just six points at 39-36 by the end of the quarter. Bob Jones went on a 16-2 run to start the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach at 55-38.

The Blue & White additionally held the edge over the Tigers in second-chance points (12-5), bench points (29-19), points in the paint (30-18), and rebounding (34-28). programs. Smid was competing at a national tournament in San Diego when Michigan State saw the midfielder and the Spartans wanted to get Jared in the green and white, so they reached out in June of 2022. The James Clemens Jet has since been up to East Lancing, Michigan twice with visits in January and July of this year. When he received a formal offer from Michigan State, he jumped at the opportunity to play in the Big Ten conference against the likes of Michigan and Ohio State and signed with the Spartans on November 8. A player who prefers colder temperatures when on the field for matches, Jared welcomes the challenge that awaits him after high school. And that moment is practically here because Smid is graduating early from James Clemens in December. “I definitely have mixed emo-

tions,” Smid said. “I’m extremely excited to further my career as both a student and an athlete. This has been a dream of mine for a while, and I want to get it started as soon as possible. However, it’ll be a huge change of scenery, leaving my parents and friends back home for a couple of months.” The drive north from James Clemens to Michigan State is a long one spanning over 650 miles that takes roughly 10 hours to make. But this is only the beginning of a journey that Jared hopes will lead him possibly into a professional soccer career down the road. “I believe that I’d be happy playing anywhere, no matter the division,” Smid said. “Though it would be amazing to play in Europe. The style of soccer (futbol) is so fast-paced and team-oriented it’s awe-inspiring.” A Chelsea supporter who

draws inspiration from players like the French midfielder N’Golo Kante and Manchester City’s dynamic midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, Smid looks to impact Michigan State with a similar playmaking prowess. There might be a moment someday. It could be in a World Cup Match for the United States or maybe some game under the lights in LaLiga. It might even be a Saturday morning match in the English Premier League and there is kid who is subbed into the game named Jared Smid, an American who played college soccer at Michigan State. The broadcasters will talk about how he turned heads in college and his hometown is a little place called Madison, Alabama. Before he was a pro, he was a Spartan and before he was a Spartan, he was a Jet and he will never forget that.

bench player’s buzzer-beater, this instant classic of a game moved into a fitting session of overtime. A pair of free throws by Griffin handed Sparkman the lead at 44-42, but a 3-point shot by Jae Smith snapped the lead back toward Bob Jones at 45-44 with a swish at 1:40. During the final minute, it was James for the Lady Senators who played the role of closer with her five massive free throws that pushed Sparkman past Bob Jones from the charity stripe.

notice him.” James Clemens utilized GPS tracking technology his sophomore year and Smid was almost always top two on the team in distance covered and sprints of over 20 yards. Jared was also the most fouled player on the team by significant margins in both of his seasons with the Jets. “He was just impossible to overlook,” Keesee said. “Dropping perfectly placed passes into the run of a striker from 50-plus yards out certainly didn’t hurt his stock with college coaches either.” As Jared rehabbed his knee and clawed his way back to form, he maintained the mentality he has always had as a soccer player. “Becoming the best version of myself,” Smid said. “Whether it’s as a player or as an individual. My teammates are also my opponents as I want to become better than them as

well.” Jared credits his teammates with James Clemens for helping get him to where he is now as a player and as a person off the pitch. “Spending all the time playing, training and traveling with them truly brought us together,” Smid said. “They’ve always been supporting me, through both highs and lows. And they’ve urged me to purse this next chapter.” Jared’s time with the Jets might have been taken from him prematurely, but his love of the game and year-round play in club ball caught the eyes of several colleges. Smid had interest from William and Mary, Davidson, West Point, UPenn, Brown, North Greenville University and even UAH. But there was only one school that offered Jared, and it was far more high-profile than any of those aforementioned soccer

Girls basketball banked off the glass gave the Lady Patriots the 41-40 lead for the first time in the game with just 38 seconds remaining. Bob Jones was leading 42-40 as Sparkman had the ball with the final seconds draining off of the clock. Lady Senator point guard Jamya Griffin had the game in her hands as she drove the lane and went toward the hoop. Griffin’s shot rattled off the rim and fell harmlessly downward, but it was grabbed by Sparkman bench player Elise McClain who put the ball back

The marathon committee of 30 looks to the extensive number of around 1,000 volunteers who are the backbone of the event. Heading into the weekend, current numbers registered for each event include marathon- 1,107, front half-marathon- 373, back half-marathon- 678, 10K- 308, 5K- 348. With a few relay teams involved and virtual runners the current total is 2,860. Last year’s winner, with a time of 2:33:21, was Madison’s Josh Whitehead. The victory was his second Rocket City title (2013) and seventh marathon win overall. The 44-year-old Whitehead’s victory was also a win in the 40-44 age group and a new Alabama state record for age 44 in the 26.2-mile distance. Whitehead is ex-

pected to defend his title as his miraculous comeback from a near fatal incident in 2020 when he was struck by a car and left for dead. He suffered severe injuries including a broke back in three places. The key sponsor for the marathon is the Huntsville Sports Commission. Local businesses also join in the sponsorship ledger. Included are SportsMED, which sponsors the half-marathons, Mission Driven Research has provided race T-shirts and Therapy South provided post-race stretching for those runners looking for assistance at race completion. “No one is paid connected to the operating the race as we’re all volunteers,” said Dwayne. “It does take a tremendous toll on us, and it consumes a lot of our personal time.” Sunday’s race will receive the start gun at 7 a.m.

Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, is now 191 years old. He is believed to have been born c. 1832, based on the fact that he was fully mature (and hence at least 50 years old) when he was brought from the Seychelles to the island of St Helena in 1882. Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise.

HEALS mobile clinic schedules weekly visits to Madison schools By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – The mobile clinic with Health Establishments at Local School Inc. or HEALS has defined a weekly schedule to visit students in Madison City Schools. “Madison City Schools is excited to partner with HEALS Inc. to offer a mobile clinic for students who do not have private medical and/or dental insurance,” MCS Public Relations Manager John Peck said. HEALS provides medical services for well-child physicals, minor injuries and illnesses, diabetes, asthma management, lab work and immunizations, along with management of chronic illnesses. Students can receive dental services for bi-annual routine cleanings, sealants, X-rays, mouth guards, fluoride treatment and silver di-

amine fluoride or SDF for cavity prevention, along with referrals to specialists. On every Thursday and Friday, the HEALS mobile clinic visits Midtown, Horizon and Mill Creek elementary schools and Bob Jones High School. A student must schedule an appointment to see a HEALS healthcare employee or doctor, as needed. Any MCS student that qualifies can receive treatments in the mobile clinic. HEALS officials also welcome a student’s siblings who are at home. “Good health is a key to success for students. For families who don’t have private health and/or dental insurance, that can be a financial challenge,” Peck said. A school nurse, teacher or staff member can refer a student to HEALS. Parents also can request healthcare services

for their child in three ways: * Online -- Complete the HEALS application on the MCS website at madisoncity.k12. al.us/Page/8868. * By phone – Call the clinical coordinator at 256-428-7560 or 256-808-9123. * By email – Email healsinc@ healsinc.org. By using one of these preceding contact methods, parents still can arrange for health services if their child attends a MCS school that is not on the regular stop list. A student must have prior permission from a parent/guardian to see a HEALS employee. HEALS provides medical and dental care in school for infants through 19-year-olds. HEALS cannot accept private insurance. In addition, the HEALS mobile clinic travels to other schools during the academic

CONGRATULATIONS! - Latin I students at Liberty Middle School in Madison participated in the Alabama Junior Classical League Pompeii Day competition on Oct. 24, the anniversary of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Latin students from all over the state competed. In the Advanced category, Jakob Wright and Daniel Tkach placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the Latin I category, Emily Lynn and Eleri Sanders tied for 1st place, with Colin Percy and Brynlea Chambers following closely with 2nd and 3rd place awards. These students have demonstrated that an understanding of the classical word, and in particular the Romans, matters. These winners, their classmates, and their teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Joy, look forward to representing Liberty Middle School at AJCL’s state competition on March 1, 2024 at Indian Springs School in Birmingham. Madison Pre-K educators discuss registration, curriculum and ‘homework’ for ‘Sittin’ with the Supe’ By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – Educators with Madison’s pre-kindergarten students discussed state- and district-defined objectives with Dr. Ed Nichols, Superintendent of Madison City Schools, for his podcast, “Sittin With the Supe.” Nichols met with Nichole Phillips, Principal of Madison City First Class Pre-Kindergarten; Lisa Koerlin, lead teacher for Pre-K; and Melissa Mims, Coordinator of Elementary Instruction. Pre-K is available to four-year-olds and funded with grants secured from the Office of Child Development in Montgomery. The prospective Pre-K student must be four years old, on or before Sept. 1, Mims said. By early September, 398 students had pre-registered; however, the Pre-K center has 216 open slots maximum for the 2023-2024 school year. MCS will accept Pre-K applications from parents through March 17, 2024. By state mandate, a random-selection drawing on April 4, 2024, will decide the students that can enroll, Phillips said. “Anytime a student withdraws for any reason, we fill open slots from the waiting list,” Phillips said. The State Department of Education has an initiative for Pre-K funds. “You get a grant to establish a Pre-K unit (or classroom) to fund a teacher and teacher aide for 18 students in each class,” Nichols said. Madison’s Pre-K center has 12 classrooms. “Two teachers are in each classroom. The lead teacher is a certified teacher in early childhood education. The auxiliary teacher holds credentials in child development or early childhood education,” Phillips said. In addition, MCS has Pre-K programs not associated with four-year-old pre-K. Early childhood programs are available in the MCS Special Education Department. Some are partial-day programs.

The Pre-K center is housed at the former West Madison Elementary School. After about 70 years, West Madison closed in 2021. The $7.3-million renovation included new floors, furnishings, HVAC, ceilings, safety and technology enhancements, bathroom fixtures, playground equipment and signage. “North Alabama has a lot of great options, but our consistent wait list shows that our Pre-K program really shines,” Koerlin said. “It is a play-based environment, but we take over 6,900 pieces of documentation every year.” Pre-K teachers already track social, physical, fine motor development, literacy and math level for the four-year-olds. “This helps the kindergarten teacher to ascertain if students have more needs,” Koerlin said. “It’s an amazing environment. We are a team that has the same goal.” State guidelines serve as a rubric of what a student needs to learn in a fouryear-old school year, Nichols said. “Most literacy skills start in conversation. We’re immersive in the classroom. We have read-alouds,” Koerlin said. Students learn “What do the words look like?” and “What do the pictures of this story portray?” As part of curriculum, the four-yearolds work on rhyming, letter recognition and initial sounds. Basic conversation is important as a base of learning these concepts. “Working and developing conversational skills prepares the students for kindergarten, when they get into functional reading,” Nichols said. Koerlin agreed but pointed out that some fouryear-olds in Pre-K already have learned to read. “We focus on the process of their understanding that print has meaning – the fundament of all literacy,” Koerlin said. Another concept for Pre-K students is self-talk, which involves the student’s describing his/her drawing or ‘what you’ want to say. “We take pride in being im-

Phillips stated the four major goals of kindergarten readiness, which the Office of School Readiness defines: * Enthusiasm for learning – “Pre-K is the first time that most students are introduced to a school in a structured setting . . . and MCS’ expectations as a whole,” Phillips said. * Social interaction – Students should learn the ability to function in a social setting. “In the classroom family, how do we connect and respond to each other when we are happy . . . or upset?” Phillips said. * Communication and problem-solving – Must be age-appropriate. A strong vocabulary strengthens a child’s interaction with others, even adults. Math skills contribute to problem-solving reasoning. * Optimal health – “We do multiple health screenings,” Phillips said. If a child’s name was not selected for four-year-old Pre-K, “a parent can help to prepare a child for kindergarten by having conversations with the child, reading, health check-ups with a pediatrician and exposure to community activities for the social aspect,” Phillips said. “Reading, talking, singing, poems, nursery rhymes . . . all contribute to lan-

guage development.” The MCS website, madisoncity.k12. al.us, includes a page of suggestions to parents for Pre-K preparedness, Mims said. Rachel Gibbs and Russell Johnson produce Nichols’ podcast, along with assistance from John Peck.

Verse of the Week

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12

Spending time with the nativity By DAWN REED

Stages of lonely By BECKY MILLER God’s Lemonade Stand

Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Deuteronomy 31:6 Most everyone has been lonely at one time or another, so it is a common emotion. When I first arrived in Kuna, Idaho I felt isolated and alone. Covid restrictions had eased somewhat but still not knowing anyone it was difficult to be a social butterfly. There are people around you every day who are just wanting someone to say hi or invite them to do something. Probably

one scenario is in a nursing home. Often our lives become to self-consumed and busy that reaching out is not on our radar. Even just sending a greeting card or picking up the phone to say hi. Invite a friend to coffee. Stay off social media as much as possible for in the long run there is no reality or joy found there. Get into God’s word starting with the book of John. Rejoice in the life you are given. PRAYER: Lord God thank you for loving me and being my best friend. I give you all my wrong feelings and ask that you help me to be strong and run my race to win. In Jesus’ name. Amen. God’s Lemonade Stand is written by former Madison resident Becky Miller. Her daily devotions appear on Facebook or at godslemonadestand.blogspot.com.

Church Directory

A decades-old nearly life-sized Nativity set needed to be repainted. I volunteered all the artsy people I knew to do it; I would help, too. I’m no artist, but I thought it would be like a humungous paint by number: not too difficult, it would just take some time. My first job was to prep the figures before priming. Each Nativity character had to be scrubbed and then sanded. After all the prep, we would have one big paint day to get the fancy work done. I lugged Mary first and then Joseph outside to the edge of the church parking lot, thanking God for their role in the Christmas story. Then came the shepherds, angels, and Baby Jesus. Wise men were taller; we semi-waltzed across the way. There was a camel, cow, donkey, and various sized sheep. I wrestled each one close to the ditch line so mess would be kept to a minimum. (I paused throughout to send selfies with them to my sister.) I developed a routine: lug to the ditch, scrub and hose down. I hauled them back to the fellowship hall when they were dry. The whole gang looked rough. After many years of exposure, paint had split and peeled. Joseph was in the worst shape of all. He resembled a leper more than a carpenter. It was obvious he’d seen his share of Christmases in the outdoors.

Finally, two coats of polyurethane were added to preserve the work and protect through the next winters. It makes me think of being sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). When the figures were ready to go back to their owner, I noticed up close that there were tiny drops of polyurethane that had pooled and dried. It reminded me that we may look good from the road but are not perfect until we get to heaven. Throughout the process, I have wondered which was my favorite: Mary-with new dark hair, Joseph-who was in the worst shape, the tallest wise man, or the one with the gray beard. No matter, it has been wonderful spending time with the Nativity.

When locals see the transformation of the Nativity, they will take note. When our lives are transformed by God’s Hand, it will be obvious to those around us.

Though scrubbing and sanding were important, they did not improve his appearance. When Mary, Joseph, their friends and animals were clean and sanded, it was time for priming. Every Nativity figure was coated with white primer. A layer of white paint makes everything look better. They could have been displayed right then and it would have been an improvement! But they were not finished. A crew of talented artists came on the appointed day to work their magic. We prayed before we started due to the import of the job. I turned on Christmas music and everyone got to work. It wasn’t long before we began to see the transformation. The Bible is chock full of stories of renewal. The Apostle Paul, who seemed so intense when I was younger, is now one of my faves. He wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (That’s with an exclamation mark.) His story of change spans much of the New Testament. In Revelation 21:5, John wrote, “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making all things new!’” (Another exclamation mark.) God is actually quite famous for transformation and renewal. If we let Him, He can take each of us, worn from sin and life, and wash us clean with the blood of Jesus. He smooths out the rough edges. (That can take some time.) Then He gives us a new purpose, a new mission.

Perzy in the 19th century. A producer of surgical instruments, Perzy’s goal was to develop an extra bright light source for use as a surgical lamp. They became popular in the ’40s, during World War II, as holiday decor because of the tranquil feeling they project. The Snow Globe room provides just that tranquility. “We’ve had people come in and lie down on the floor to soak up the tranquil feeling. We were like ‘Oh, okay.’ But he said he loved the room,” Masterson said. “People bring their kids in to see it and it’s just fun. We are always directing people to the Snow Globe room when they come in.” The snow globes are a little different than the average turn it over and watch it snow version. They have a built-in timer and a power adapter to save batteries, allowing them to shine brighter at all times of the day. Besides the lights, the snow globes give the room movement. Masterson says it’s this movement within the snow globes that makes them a great present for older people, or even the young, who just want some type of motion in their homes. She purchases them for her mother for that very reason. “She says that when she comes into the house, the snow globes make her relaxed and happy,” Masterson said. Whether you are looking for a gift that keeps on giving, holiday decor

for your home or just want to take in a moment of holiday spirit, the Snow Globe room is a must-visit. And if you feel like lying on the ground to get the full experience, remember you are not alone. In addition to the Snow Globe room, the rest of the store is filled with beautiful Christmas decor. It can only be described as magical. That is what owner Deborah McDaniel feels when she thinks back on the time, she visited her grandfather in Chicago during the Christmas holidays. The family would take the train into the city to see the storefronts on Michigan Avenue— stores like Macy’s with elaborate displays. “My grandfather was an artist. He attended the Art Institute in Chicago,” McDaniel said. “His home was always decorated beautifully. We would get roasted chestnuts, hot cocoa, and walk down Michigan Avenue. It was magic.” That Christmas magic, the smells, the sights, and the feeling, is what McDaniel captures in her downtown shop, Noble Passage Interiors. “I want to capture that on a small scale. We do not have the large stores like Macy’s downtown, but we can still make children’s eyes twinkle,” McDaniel said. “I feel my shop feels magical and feels like childhood.” The storefront windows may not be as large as downtown Chicago,

but McDaniel and her employees have represented a variety of holiday décor options in their windows. One is decorated in the traditional red and green with Santa and his reindeer while the other represents the more spiritual side of the holiday with golds and Nativity scenes. “Decorating is so individual,” McDaniel said. “We like to cater to all tastes.” There is a reason customers come from as far away as Atlanta to purchase décor at the shop. McDaniel strives to make her store “feel like home.” The shop which has been open for 13 years has become a family tradition for some customers. “During the holidays, we see a lot of our clients bring in their families that are visiting,” McDaniel said. “Then those family members become repeat customers.” “Everybody who works in here loves Christmas,” McDaniel added. “One of my employees has Christmas music on her playlist and when she walks at the beach, she takes her walks listening to it. We could do Christmas all year long.” Noble Passage Interiors is located at 204 Main Street in downtown Madison. When in the area for the Madison Polar Express Christmas Tree Trail lighting, Wassail Fest or Christmas Capers, make sure you admire the storefront windows. They are beautiful, especially at night.

We’re invested in YOU.
