MAFS 2013 ANNUAL

FUNDRAISER

PRESIDENT& EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS MESSAGE In 2013 Metropolitan Asian Family Services marked its 21st year of service in the Chicagoland area. This organization exists because we heard the plight of the South Asian immigrant population caused by language and cultural barriers that led to feelings of loneliness, frustration and neglect. In 1992 we decided to do something about it! We got community members with various backgrounds, like business, law, health and social work, together to brainstorm solutions for the common problems our community faces after migrating to America. Thus, Metropolitan Asian Family Services was born. At first, our organization started out with a handful of volunteers who offered their time to help our first clients with their public and immigration benefits. We then grew rapidly as funders and community members put their support behind our agency, because they saw our ability to reach out and serve the community at unprecedented levels. Two decades later our agency has expanded to eight fully equipped facilities that serve the many thousands of clients who need our help each year. Our staff has gone from handfuls to hundreds and our caregivers and aides have increased from tens to thousands. It is impossible to run a not-for-profit organization like MAFS without the help of local and State government funds, public officials who help advocate our cause, volunteers who offer their time and effort, private foundations along with businesses business that donate money and provide resources, and partner

agencies who share and spread our message. It is because of this collaborate efforts and sharing of resources that our organization has the ability to help so many people. Unfortunately, state funding has diminished increasing the demand for community goodwill and support. Especially now as the community demands for our services continues to rise. Our organization needs to fill the gap between funding cuts and increase in demand. We ask and encourage caring, generous individuals like yourself and your organizations to help us continue the level and variety of services we offer. Through a shared commitment with our community, our aim is to create an atmosphere of collaboration where ideas and resources can be shared resulting in the greater good for our community. It is in the spirit of this transformational vision of shared resources, we invite you to join us in this mission of serving the community better than ever and encourage you to learn more about MAFS by visiting our site –www.mafsinc.com, or by connecting with us on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, or Linkedin. Help us do more through your support. Sincerely, Dr. Firdaus Jafri, President Santosh Kumar, Executive Director

10 EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS ANNUAL REPORT Executive Director’s Annual Report

Collaborative efforts for a shared vision It gives me immense pleasure to present MAFS’s annual report for the period of July 2012 to June 2013. This year has been a journey of meeting difficult challenges and getting recognized by various organizations for our hard and sincere services which have enabled us to become a staple in the community. MAFS is a true example, showing the benefits of collaborative efforts to better serve the community by providing a multitude of services. As a non-profit organization it is difficult to achieve success on your own; MAFS is lucky to have Universal Industries and Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS) to support its programs. UMAS is an independent not-for-profit organization that works along-side MAFS to fill the gaps and

share resources that ultimately help strengthen one another. Formally, MAFS owes its existence to Universal Industries, a Chicago based business, which supports and fulfills about 35% MAFS’ financial requirements. MAFS was formed to deliver social service programs other than home and community based services, and it has come a long way in serving the community in various well established programs. It was incorporated as a not-for-profit Tax-Exempt 501 © (3) multi-cultural organization in 1993 with a mission to provide comprehensive and integrated services to the immigrant population of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lankan and East European communities facing linguistic and

Starting from the Des Plaines office in 1992, our agency has now expanded its services to eight fully equipped senior centers strategically located in Chicago, Niles/Des Plaines, Roselle/Schaumburg, Carol Stream, Naperville, and to more recently opened centers in Algonquin, Vernon Hills and Orland Park. These centers are accessible to the targeted population currently serving 91 cities and neighborhoods in over eight counties which include Cook, Suburban Cook, Lake, DuPage, McHenry, Kane, Kendall and Will in greater Chicagoland. I encourage you to view MAFS/UMAS Annual Report to familiarize yourself with the variety of programs and services offered to our community:

Public Benefit Assistance Programs: Social Service and Outreach – Title III B – Funded by AgeOptions MAFS is a pioneer in providing social services to the lowincome and underserved population. The demand for these kinds of services is increasing due to the economic downturn and slow recovery of our economy. MAFS staff assists clients in accessing public benefits available to fit their individual needs. Our staff helps fill-out applications for these services and escorts them to the appropriate public benefit offices such as Department of Human Services or Social Security Administration, Immigration and Naturalization to submit the application and serve as their interpreter. We also translate official forms in Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Spanish and Bosnian languages to facilitate the process of applying for benefits. Our staff acts as liaisons between the client and public officials to help our community members get the help and support they require. This year we had the privilege of helping complete 5,825 cases in Cook, Suburban Cook County, DuPage and Lake County.

Nutrition Programs MAFS is in its 14th year of serving hot lunches to the senior citizen population. These lunches are nutritionally balanced but more importantly they provide an opportunity for seniors to make friends and socialize to break free

from isolation. These meals are freshly prepared by trained cooks under strict hygienic conditions. We provided 33,905 hot meals community this year from our Chicago, Niles and Roselle facilities.

Educational Programs MAFS’s educational programs are designed to teach English, communication and technical skills to a targeted immigrant population. This program enables its participants to become employable, productive members of our society and most importantly in hopes to assimilate into the U.S. job market.

English as a Second Language (ESL) - Bright Ideas (CLESE) Bright Ideas is a program offered by CLESE to low-literate seniors since 2004. MAFS has provided ESL classes from the beginning as a tool to prepare immigrants acquire U.S. citizenship as a necessary step to fully acclimate into their new home. We work with the Coalition of Limited English Speaking program to acquire resources like teaching aids and course materials for our participants. This year we have taught 110 people through this program. Fortunately, we are able to continue our ESL program as we were selected by the State of Illinois Secretary of State Adult Literacy Program to teach at our Chicago and Niles locations. In the coming months we will begin to not only teach English but also math at the aforementioned locations.

MAFS is a pioneer in providing social services to the low-income and underserved population.

The main purposes of these seminars is to increase their awareness and provide the necessary tools which will enable them and their caregivers to adopt healthier lifestyles. The purpose of these preventive health care strategies is to help reduce age-related diseases and manage chronic health conditions. Health-care seminars are made possible through

Computers are the integral part of modern living, and nothing works without it. MAFS started computer training for South Asian immigrants in 1997. Although there was no funding for this program this year MAFS taught 220 community members the basics in computer skills from typing to Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. This program was offered free of charge to the students.

the Title III-D grant awarded to MAFS by Age Options. MAFS collaborates with other healthcare organizations to promote health awareness in the South Asian Community of Metropolitan Chicago. Free educational seminar topics include: Breast Cancer, Kidney Disorders, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Depression, Heart Health and Medication Management. Our partners are White Crane Wellness Center, National Kidney Foundation, Y-ME Breast Cancer Organization, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, CLESE, Midwest Asian Health Association and Asian Health Coalition.

Since its establishment MAFS has and continues to provide help with the immigration and naturalization process for community members. MAFS also helps applicable members of the community in acquiring their OCI card. This year we have helped 910 members apply for citizenship and petition for OCI cards. This service is provided without outside funding, however, we continue this service to benefit immigrant families.

Energy Assistance gram (LIHEAP)

Pro-

The Light Heat Energy Assistance Program is designed to Executive Director’s help low-income families pay their Annual Report heat and light bills. This program is offered multiple times throughout the year and brings hundreds of people from all nationalities to the MAFS’s Chicago and Niles offices. Many of them arrive before the office opens at 9:00 AM to benefit from this program. This service is funded by CEDA. MAFS’s staff help the clients in processing their application in order for them to receive the funds. This year we helped 1,025 eligible families through this program.

The South Asian Heart Lifestyle Intervention Project: Prevention of Heart-Diseases – Funded by Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine MAFS and Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine are conducting a heart disease prevention study for South Asians in the Chicago and greater Chicagoland area. This study is one of the first of its kind and is funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Experts from Northwestern University are working with MAFS to reach out to South Asians because they have the highest rates of heart disease in the world. The study teaches South Asians about healthy lifestyle and it includes information that is relevant to the South Asian diet and culture. The study team helps participants to eat better, become more active, reduce stress, and lose weight. The study also involves group classes and fun activities. The overall goal of the study is to help the South Asian community members abolish their sedentary habits and to improve their understanding for the choices of food. For their participation in this study MAFS was honored with the 2013 Community-Engaged Research Partnership Award, on May 15, 2013. The award was established by the Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities (ARCC), part of the Center for Community Health in Northwestern’s Institute for Public Health and Medicine.

Pink Pashmina Project A research project for breast & cervical cancer in South

Asian Women Metropolitan Asian Family Services (MAFS) is a significant partner to the Asian Health Coalition’s Pink Pashmina Project. This is a community-based program funded by the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Chicago to provide culturally tailored health education to increase breast and cervical cancer awareness. They offer free screenings for limited English-speaking, economically disadvantaged immigrant and refugee women from India, Pakistan and Nepal. The main objectives of this project are - 1) To enhance community awareness of breast and cervical cancer in South Asian women through culturally and linguistically appropriate education. 2) Promote early detection through routine breast and cervical screening. 3) Identify and address barriers to screening and care. 4) Facilities access to preventive care services for the uninsured. Implemented in June 2012 the program has successfully increased the awareness among South Asian Muslim women and reduced cancer mortality affecting Muslims and South Asian Women in Chicago and Cook. Collaborating with Asian Health Coalition has provided MAFS the opportunity to reach more community members.

UMAS

Community Care Program funded by Department of Aging

Homecare Homecare program is the cornerstone of UMAS. This program signifies our vision of helping the elderly and making a positive impact in the community. This year our Homecare aides served 2,615 elderly clients, which is a 24.5% increase since last year. Currently we are highly anticipating the implementation of the state mandated EVV (electronic visit verification) process by the end of September 2013. Although this process is a drastic change from current methods, we believe it will make our organization much more efficient and effective. Impact of the Program This program has an amazing impact on the well-being on the elderly and families. The homecare services result in fewer trips to hospitals and emergency rooms saving thousands of dollars to the State. The additional benefit is that elderly can stay in their own homes with their families instead of nursing home placements, which is a tremendous financial burden on the State and Federal gov-

ernment. Moreover there are no ethnic Nursing Homes available for ethnic targeted populations to accommodate their cultural, dietary and linguistic needs. Most of the immigrant seniors are lonely, depressed and suffering with aging complications and are culturally isolated while their family members are at work; this program offers a unique method of interaction where the seniors feel safe and integrated with society. MAFS/ UMAS employment and training services have created an army of multilingual caregivers that provide such services to the elderly population. Programs like this offer jobs to those that may face difficulty in acquiring one due to language barriers. Thereby, this program positively affects the economy by decreasing the poverty level and enabling capable persons to work.

to take part in the various services offered at the adult day services center for those who are not approved by the state. Adult Day Service programs keep seniors happy and healthy as well as mentally, physically and socially stimulated.

Future Plan Adult Day Care Services

Impact of the Program This promotes a healthy lifestyle and allows the seniors to socialize with same-age seniors in a home-like environment. In 2013 we served 239 individuals through our multiple locations, which is an increase of 37.7% from the previous year. This program also offers opportunities for physical and mental health wellbeing. It promotes new friendships and reduces depression and social isolation in many cases. These centers also provide an open door policy for seniors to ‘DROP-IN’

We are planning to act as a liaison in research studies to find solutions for chronic diseases prevailing in our population.

Executive Director’s Annual

REP RT

This is a special program provided by Illinois Department on Aging. Adult Day Service (ADS) program was initiated in Illinois for South Asian seniors by UMAS in 1999. ADS provides an opportunity for the elderly to get involved in structured and fun-filled activities. The purpose is to provide the elderly with a safe, secure and home-like environment outside of their home. This program provides breakfast, hot lunches and snacks to the participants, on-site medical monitoring by trained nurses, yoga and fitness sessions, health education and screening seminars, recreational activities and round trip transportation services from their home to the centers by experienced drivers. This program is currently available at Chicago, Vernon Hills, Niles, Carol Stream and Naperville centers.

MAFS is reaching out to the community with a vision of shared and collaborative services. In the future we plan to connect medical services, Home Health Care and senior living programs to provide the full array of services to our community and especially the elderly.

We plan and hope to establish more partnerships with businesses to fill the State and Federal gaps in funding so we can continue to provide services to the community. Through this we also hope to become more efficient and effective in sustainability. Finally, by the end of this month Homecare caregivers will began to utilize EVV (electronic visit verification) to record and verify their hours. We will use this month to train and implement the system.

Therefore I kindly request your full support of MAFS and donate generously for its expansion in proportion to the increasing demand for social services to our community

Sincerely, Mrs. Santosh Kumar Executive Director MAFS

gage healthy lifestyles in the South Asian community. The SAHELI project targets the specific lifestyle changes needed to combat diseases like diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity. The goal of the study focuses on teaching the South Asian community members how to make important dietary changes, engage in an active lifestyle, reduce stress, and lose weight to reduce or prevent their chances of stroke and/or heart attacks. SAHELI is one of the first, community-based heart disease prevention interventions systematically targeted to the South Asian community. what a... busy year Community and Educational Impact Award Our organization received the Community and Educational Impact Award from Dan Rutherford, the State Treasurer of Illinois, on May 29, 2013. We were selected for this award for enriching the lives of many South Asian community members with educational and technical programs including English as a Second Language, Bright Ideas and Computer training.

English as a Second Language We have been providing ESL classes since our inception in 1993. This program is designed to help immigrants acclimate to the US by improving their knowledge and language skills. Our ESL program also help participants build confidence in communication skills in order to help them find better jobs so they can make the most out of life in their new home.

Bright Ideas Bright Ideas is a program offered by CLESE to lowliterate seniors since 2004. The curriculum focuses on learning everyday language and listening skills. Class meets at our Roselle Senior Center two days a week. We also provide citizenship classes to seniors in Chicago, Niles and Naperville to help seniors gain the knowledge they need to take the U.S. citizenship exam.

Computer Training Our computer training program for South Asian immigrants began in 1997. The training began at our Chicago, Niles and Roselle branches. Additional funding from the Retirement Research Foundation in 1999 fostered the expansion of the computer training program to all of our centers. Currently, we have no grant to support this program but still continue the program because we believe that basic computer and other technical skills are vital to training our community members to be competitive and confident employees in today’s workforce.

Fundraising is a tool we utilize for one obvious reason, to raise funds to continuously provide quality of service to those less fortunate. In addition to this, fundraising can increase awareness of our organization and promote our cause within the local community therefore attracting new members and supporters. Bringing so many people together in one place allows us to showcase our agency and our culture. Furthermore, it lets us spread our message and raise awareness of the issues that are impacting our community to a much larger audience. So again, it is in this spirit, we ask you to help us do more through your support.

2012 Celebrating 20YEARS of Community Services fundraiser We celebrated our 20th Anniversary at our annual fundraiser held on September 22, 2013 at Meadows Club, Rolling Meadows. The annual dinner, hosted in association with Dhrishti, attracted a host of eminent business and community leaders including Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State, Michael Gelder, Policy Advisor to Governor Pat Quinn, Gopal Lalmalani, MD, Village President Oakbrook, Michelle Mussman, State Representative 56th District, Mayor William McLeod, Hoffman Estates, Mary Killough, Senior Health Care Policy Advisor to Governor Pat Quinn, Marta Pareyra, Executive Director of the Coalition of Limited English Speaking Elderly (CLESE), Jamie Boyce from AgeOptions, and foreign ministers Amrish Singh Gautam, Deputy Speaker Delhi Vidhan Sabha and Karan Singh Pawar, King of Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, India. Jesse White, in his remarks, congratulated our staff, board members, and clients for serving the community with compassionate care and passion. He said, “The range of service that MAFS provides has helped individuals to live fuller and healthier lives. Gelder appreciated Mrs. Kumar for taking the mission and service of MAFS to the next level. He also congratulated MAFS for providing comprehensive and integrated services to the elderly immigrant population in Chicago and greater the Chicago area. Mrs. Kumar thanked government organizations and sponsors for supporting various programs of MAFS. She extended her appreciation for our

longtime supporters, S.S. Bhatt and Dr. Firdaus Jafri. Speaking on various services that MAFS renders to the community, she said, “MAFS has started many programs when and where required. MAFS has been successfully organizing various programs with little or no funding.” Celebrating twenty years of success, Mrs. Kumar couldn't help but express her emotions as she spoke of the difficulties she faced and sacrifices that she had made as a mother and wife to benefit those who are less fortunate. In her closing remarks, Mrs. Kumar said, “Life is worth living for all of us, thanks to your extraordinary contribution to this cause.” Amrish Singh Gautam said he felt proud to see Indian Americans doing such noble deeds in the USA. He urged them to follow the path of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Guru Nanak,

Sri Krishna and Sri Ram. Karan Singh Pawar commended MAFS for providing remarkable service to the Indian community in Chicago. Part of the evening's entertainment was a Kuchipudi dance program Puspanjali performed as a fusion dance, a true exhibition of the blending between Eastern and Western culture. The much anticipated main entertainment of the night was Amit and Smeet Kumar's tribute to

their legendary father Kishore Kumar. Kishore Kumar was a humorous actor and singer. This performance was enjoyed by guests of all ages as the singers performed old classics with new favorites. The audience was treated to some humorous clippings from movies of the legendary star. This was followed by the entrance of the two Kishores, Amit & Sumeet Kumar, who staged a remarkable performance. The evening was emceed by Masala T and over $100,350 was raised for the cause!

2013 mini-fundraiser Our seniors stole the show at this year’s annual minifundraiser held at our Naperville location on June 8th, 2013. The masters of ceremony, Shree Gurusamy and Neelam Desai, welcomed over 300 guests to increase awareness of our organization and enjoy the rich South Asian culture and arts. Mrs. Kumar informed guests of the current impediments and hardship encountered by the organization due to recent state budget cuts. She encouraged community members to support MAFS in its mission to provide services for the underserved populations. She also acknowledged the importance of collaborative support from local and state government. With the help of our ADS coordinator, Hena Mehta, our seniors put on a fashion show with costumes from all around the world. Pankaj Patel, our ADS program director, along with other Chicago staff put on a drama that really hit home for some. Their play depicted the struggle many of our ADS seniors have gone through; with themes including frustration, neglect, and loneliness. The night continued with cultural flare as Ruth and Anjali Varghese of the Kalapadma Academy mesmerized everyone with their Indian classical dance performance on Draupadi Cheer Haran (Legend from an ancient epic). With stomachs full of fine South Asian cuisine, the festivities continued into the wee hours of the night with singing led by Ms. Khedkar, Mr. Shahzad Ahmed, Ms. Shika Tandon, Mr. Mahijit Virdi and MS. Iffat Ara. In attendance were Naperville Mayor, George Pradel, State Senator, Tom Cullerton, State Representatives Michelle Mussman and Dariene J. Senger, and Commissioner of Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation, Frank Avila, Sr. Appreciation awards were given to each of them for their continual support of MAFS. Special thanks are extended to our Naperville manager, Gira Ethindra, who was a key organizer of this special event.

those who are gone but not forgotten

remembrances

Rev. Dr. J. B. Singha was an active member of the Indian community and a charismatic leader. He started South Asian Family Services/ Samaritan Community Center in 1990 which reflected his pioneer spirit in its many community programs. He touched the hearts of many through his generous help and association. Rev. Singha brimmed with ideas, envisioned many projects and remained a man of God. He lived from 1936 to 2013 and passed away peacefully on July 27th, 2013. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends and community. May he rest in peace.

Ms. Puce Semsa was our participant for three years. She came from Bosnia as a refuge from the war. Unfortunately, she became terminal ill from cancer. We were very sorry to hear that she died on July 1,2013. Ms. Puce was in great need of our services since her family lived very far away. Our agency would provide her with a Homecare aide who would take her to her doctor, cook, clean and do other home chores. Ms. Puce was so happy and thankful for it. She will be missed and remembered by all of here at MAFS.
