MEET SARAH
EMMA’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF May is all about mamas, and as I write this, I just celebrated one year of motherhood. I’ll admit it. I’ve turned into one of those parents that shares pictures of their children entirely too often. But this month I took it to a whole new level. Giving him no choice in the matter, I turned our little man into a model for this issue’s “Pint-Sized Summer Threads” feature (page 36). I can’t say that I’m sorry about it. While reflecting back on life premotherhood, I came across the following entry I journaled after finding out Hudson would in fact be a little man and thought I’d give you a peek. I wish I could say I wanted a boy all along, but I didn’t. I don’t like guns, or cowboys, or smelly body odor. I’m definitely not one of those reasonable people that says, “I don’t care what we have so long as they’re healthy.” (As though the rest of us would readily sacrifice health for gender selection.) Nope, I dreamed of having a girl. We picked out a name, I bought a baby girl dress, and I pictured the two of us baking together on cold December days. So here I am with warm jelly slathered on my belly staring up at
a flat screen ultrasound monitor waiting to hear three words, “It’s a girl.” Of course the anatomy is the last part of the visit, so I have to wait. I’m uncharacteristically patient, especially for a pregnant lady who doesn’t have any patience to begin with. While I wait, I watch the most beautiful little baby twist and turn in front of me. The four images she prints off at the end will be poured over again and again, so I soak in the real live movements while I can. Where 14 weeks ago there was nothing, I now see brain hemispheres and chambers of a tiny heart. I see fingers and toes wiggle and stretch. I could stare at this screen all day. Then, I see it. The ultrasound tech smiles, “Looks like you’re having a…” “A boy?” I interrupt. “A boy,” she confirms. I’d like to say that all of the girl stuff went out the window, that I’m over the moon, or that part of me knew it all along. Truthfully, my heart sinks. The technician hands me a few black and white screenshots, and it’s over. I’m so in love with this little guy, boy
parts and all, that crying doesn’t feel right. I send Ryan a text message with the news and start my car. My mind floods with thoughts of who he’ll be when he grows up. Will he take after his dad and be a gifted speaker? Will he be like his mom and kill it at Scrabble? He could be the president or a pastor. He could write screenplays or cure diseases. So maybe we don’t bond over wedding dresses or wingbacks… maybe instead we have impassioned theological discussions. He’ll probably hang back on pedicure days, but maybe he’ll be the one who finally beats me at Words with Friends. I’ll be that mom at golf tournaments, and he and Ryan will probably start a men’s fashion blog together where they banter over hair products and English spread collar shirts. I know it’s not what I had in mind, but turns out God had a different plan, and maybe it’s better than mine anyway. Sarah Hubbell is the editor in chief of Emma Magazine. She lives in Phoenix with her husband, Ryan, and their toddler son. She loves baking, DIYs, and the TV show, Friends. Follow her on Instgram @ sarahmhubbell.

By: Anna Liesemeyer of InHonorofDesign.com I have a drawer full of necklaces that need repair. Despite a snapped chain, or a missing bead, the broken necklace is made up of good parts. This DIY allows you to turn those beautiful mishaps into something new! Or, start from scratch with brand new gem stone beads, a chain, lobster clasps, jewelry wire, and a pair of pliers. Make in varying lengths to layer with each other or mix up with other necklaces. EMMAMAG.COM 9

1.Hold brush straight up by nose to see where to start. The arch should be about 3/4 of the way out from there. Brow end point follows angle of the eye.
2. Using brow powder, softly line along upper and lower edge of your brow. Fill in between the two lines using feather-like strokes.
3. Using brow gel, brush from each brow’s inner corner to the outer to keep rogue hairs in place.
4. Using a highlighting shadow and an eye shadow brush, apply the highlighter right beneath the arch and along the end of the brow for a natural lift. I recently found myself at a friend’s backyard birthday bash. With gourmet food, impeccable styling, and a picture worthy backyard, it seemed she thought of everything. Except a handful of uninvited guests. Mosquitos feasted on our flesh while flies dove for the feta. Sometimes we focus so much on the aesthetic when entertaining that we forget how we actually make our guests feel. This backyard barbecue can be thrown together at the last minute, but still shows guests your thoughtful attention to detail. Citronella candles serve double duty, adding a warm glow while repelling mosquitos. A kid’s table complete with a strip of chalkboard paint and plenty of chalk allows parents to relax. For decor, simply repurpose items you already have around the house. Old Coke bottles transform into take-home vases for guests to enjoy freshly picked buds long after the barbecue ends. An ironing table serves as a buffet, a wheel barrow holds iced beverages, and leftover fabric scraps add a consistent color story throughout. Your guests will never know you threw it together last night! By Sarah Hubbell

WOODS WALLPAPER: ANTHROPOLOGIE
By Melissa Campana Photographs by Green Ginger Photography
When the Emma ladies heard Carly Kmyta refer to herself as a “tattooed Martha Stewart,” we wanted her to pull up a chair and pour her heart out. In fact, this painted princess is also a mama-to-be, and her unique look, paired with the beautiful bump she’s rocking, made her the perfect blogger spotlight for this month’s issue. May is all about moms, and we can’t think of anyone who better encapsulates motherhood’s “it’s complicated”
status: Kymta’s fair, beautiful features mirror her inner sweetness, while the sleeves remind you that this chick’s got edge, too. Kmyta hails from Chilliwack, British Columbia, where she and her hubby Spencer have been prepping their nest for the arrival of Baby Lux. Kymta’s husband is a tattoo artist by trade (he’s actually the one who inked her arms!), while Kymta herself… well, what doesn’t she do? From adorable arts and crafts to a killer nursery, her creative spirit is splashed all over her blog (www.
carlykmyta.com), making us more than a wee bit jealous of the world she has created for Lux. Kymta’s blog has a section devoted to her photography (yep, she takes pictures, too) and one gallery in particular seems to reflect Kymta’s personality perfectly. Entitled “Flowers and Fences,” the photographs show tiny, colorful wildflowers, poking out from beneath a blanket of snow amongst miles of barbed wire fencing. Delicate, lovely, and just the tiniest bit dangerous… much like Kymta herself.

1 cup (8 oz) whole milk 2 large eggs 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) unsalted butter, melted 1 cup (5 ounces) unbleached, all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1. Preheat oven to 450ยบF and position an oven rack in the center. Lightly coat the muffin pan with melted butter or high-heat canola-oil spray. Once the oven is fully heated, heat the prepared muffin pan in the oven for about 7 minutes. 2. In medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter, flour and salt until well blended. 3. Using a spatula, scrape the batter into a measuring cup. Remove the pan from the oven and pour the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups. Return the pan to the oven and bake for about 15 minutes. Then turn the oven down to 400ยบF and continue baking the popovers until they are puffed and deep golden brown color. Do not open the oven too early or they will deflate. 4. Remove from oven and cool pan on rack for a few minutes. Remove popovers from pan and serve immediately. Variation: Try adding fresh herbs and parmesan!

3 pounds strawberries 2 cups cabernet wine 3 1/2 cups granulated sugar half a jar pectin 1. Wash, slice, and dice the strawberries. Gently mix with wine and sugar in a large bowl. Cover the bowl & refrigerate overnight. 2. The next day, bring the strawberries, wine and sugar to a boil over medium heat. Return to the bowl, cover and refrigerate overnight. 3. The next morning, prepare for canning according to standard canning procedures available at bell or kerr mason jar websites. 4. Pour the strawberries into a colander set over saucepan. Bring the collected juices to a boil over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally. 5. Add the strawberries and pectin to the saucepan. Simmer, stirring often. As the jam cooks, smash some of the strawberries with the back of a wooden spoon to help even out the texture.. 6. Fill the jars up to 1/2 below the rim. Use a clean towel to wipe any preserves off the rims, then top each jar with a lid and a tightened ring. Place the jars back in the canning pot and make sure they are covered by at least 1 inch of water. Bring to a boil and process for 10 minutes. Place the jars on a folded towel and allow to sit, undisturbed, for 24 hours. Check the seals of the lids after 1 hour. If a seal has not formed (the center hasn’t popped), refrigerate the jar immediately.

Q & A with Nicole Whittington from Handmade Riot POLKA DOT HEAD BAND H&M POLKA DOT SHIRT H&M FLORAL SKINNIES NORDSTROM MINT FLATS H&M
Inspired by mid-century design, Handmade Riot crafts stylish children’s furniture and toys (see rocker on left). Emma sat down with co-founder, Nicole Whittington, to get the scoop on how this couple turned their hobby into a business. EMMA Magazine: Can you tell us a bit about Handmade Riot? How did your business start? Nicole Whittington: We live in this really small house, and there isn’t any real storage or closet space or anything like that. I wanted to make some shelving for my office work space area. James does woodwork downtown, so I was like “Hey, will you help me do this?” So we did [the honeycomb shelves], and we put them up in our kitchen because they looked better there than in my office. We took some pictures, and we got a really big response from friends and different small business owners. EM: How would you describe your design style? NW: Very clean. We primarily work with birch or birch ply, so it’s lighter-toned wood and we always add a pop of color in some form. So, with the Honeycomb Shelves we paint the inside a certain color. Right now, we really like turquoise and red-orange. Just a really fun palette. EM: Making furniture and toys for Handmade Riot is not your only job. Where do you find the time and how do you balance between a busy work schedule? NW: Well we’ve gotten so busy with Handmade Riot that James and I both scaled back our other jobs to about 2 1/2 days a week. So, between the two of us we only work one full-time other job. But before that, it was like 80-hour work weeks. We just got through that knowing that there would be a light at the end of tunnel. We’ve got enough going on right now that it’s affirming that the time, when it was really tough, is still motivating because we are seeing success. It’s worth it.

EM: Speaking of, what has been the key to your success? NW: I would say, doing what we like. We aren’t trying to go after any particular group of people. We’re not projecting what we make on what we think people want. We’re just doing what we like, and it turns out people like it too. And I think that’s been really helpful because then we’re not over thinking our products. We like it and we present it in that way, we’re enthusiastic about it and it’s genuine, and I think that’s what people are attracted to. EM: Where do you find inspiration? NW: All over. The honeycombs, initially for me, [came from] I like to garden and I have friends that are trying to start beehives in their gardens, and in [mine and James’] first apartment together
40 EMMA
we had a bee problem. And so it was just a cute coincidence, especially with the geometric shapes kind of being a cool thing right now. With the kid rocking chair, James really loves Herman Miller, and so the inspiration is kind of obvious there. I think he draws a lot of his inspiration from working at the Burgeon Group, because they design interactive play areas for children’s libraries, so he’s working with kid stuff all the time. And kind of being a big kid himself. EM: Where do you hope to see this business going? NW: We definitely have some plans ahead of us. The idea is to be financially independent within the next year so that Handmade Riot is a full-time job. Ideally, what we would like to have is a physical space that is a dual
combination workshop and retail space. The back wall [of the retail space] would be a glass window so the costumers can connect with the physical process and see that everything is handmade. I think it’s important for people to see that process and connect them back to the idea that not everything is made by machinery. EM: Where does the name, “Handmade Riot” come from? NW: James really wanted the word ‘handmade’ in there. We tried to work ‘handmade’ into all these different names and a lot of them sounded very cheesy. And I really wanted something a little more gutsy that kind of threw back in people's faces the idea of being from scratch. So, we decided by mixing words back and forth. But Handmade Riot was a really good fit.
