You have to laugh

I’m still here in the driving seat as the old man is on secondment in R&D. Something about mixed media marketing, while I run the tactile real world print magazine. Suits me as it compliments my daily interface with our own print customers. On the whole most are positive and a few, well you know the retail service industry; a few are hell bent on converting us to Texas FM, Trump as a hero and Covid is a hoax. Just grin and bear it, frontline print has always been a release valve for the SME/SOHO homeworkers as they reach out for services they can’t perform in-house. It’s the fastest growing part of our present customer market. With all the trade shows cancelled we will cover all the news as it happens across our broadcast channels of print, post, web, email and social media. Have a great fall, sorry autumn. Maureen

POLE POSITION WITH MEDIACO’S HP LATEX WRAP VR Motorsport has unveiled a vibrant new racing car design to inspire and celebrate female drivers, printed by MediaCo using flexible HP Latex technology. Vincent Randall, a former sidecar racer, launched VR Motorsport around ten years ago as an amateur organisation which quickly attained professional status, finding success in the UK and around the world. This year it is taking on the competition at renowned tracks including Brands Hatch and Silverstone in the BritCar Endurance Championship. VR Motorsport kicked off the season at the Croft Circuit in July with a freshly wrapped Praga R1 racing car, featuring a design commissioned by Motorsport Woman to call attention to female drivers. After Round 1, VR Motorsport female/male racing duo Jem Hepworth and Danny Harrison were top of the leader board. Dubbed the ‘art car’, the wrap is based on a 2D piece by artist Cain Caser that was transformed into a 3D wrap by MediaCo. Vincent Randall is also one of the founders and directors of Manchester-based MediaCo, a leading large format graphics producer in the UK, so the project was a natural collaboration. Its 36,000sq ft facility is packed with equipment used to produce everything from exhibition graphics to retail signage to wallpaper, but its HP Latex 3600, installed this year, was selected to

produce the full colour vehicle wrap. “HP Latex inks don’t affect the surface of the material you’re printing on, so if you’re using glossy film for a vehicle wrap then it will stay glossy,” explains Vincent. “The inks are also very flexible, which is essential for wrapping cars like the Praga R1 which has a distinctive contoured chassis.” The uniformity of finish and colour were important to replicate the artist’s original painting, in particular the intricate brushwork. It was not possible to scan the painting, so MediaCo’s graphic artists worked from hundreds of photographs to render the image. The project — including printing by the MediaCo

team, wrapping by Visionary Graphics and delivery to Croft — was completed in just one week. “We like to tell the story of our drivers in our racing car designs,” says Vincent. “The finished result reflects the driver, Jem Hepworth, and the vision of Motorsport Woman’s owner Tara Strong. It looks great on the track.” Vincent Randall says that MediaCo was first attracted to HP Latex for its environmental benefits, having already invested in an HP Stitch S1000 for textile work and achieving stunning results. HP’s water based, odour free Latex inks are GREENGUARD Gold rated at the highest level and are ozone free. Therefore, both end users and print room operators benefit from cleaner, safer air. “Sustainability is the future of print,” says Vincent. “MediaCo was the first print company to achieve ISO 14001 in the UK, so we were very impressed by the story of HP and by the environmental credentials of HP Latex and Stitch. “Even on the racetrack, environmentally friendly technology is developing. It’s a challenge for car companies but in a few years we might well be racing electric cars at VR Motorsport. I personally drive an electric car and we strive for sustainability in many areas across both businesses.” www.hp.com • www.mediaco.co.uk

PRINT SECURE DEVELOP A LEVEL 2 STANDARD The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) has granted approval to the print trailblazer consortium to develop a Level 2 Print Standard. The Level 2 Print Apprenticeship is vital for people coming into our industry, taking their first steps on a career in print, or gaining accreditation in a role which makes up a huge proportion of jobs in print. The application for the Level 2 was begun in 2016 and since then – through changing requirements – the consortium of employers, the industry, our training division, other training organisations and our relationship manager at IfATE have all worked together to gain approval of this submission. The feedback received through the trade press and the information garnered from multiple surveys has proved to be consistently supportive and has continually underlined the need for this standard at every checkpoint. As such we thank everyone who voiced issues and supported the endeavour. These standards now include occupational duties along with the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required of a candidate.

4

Going forward, the consortium that will work through the development of this standard alongside the assessment plan continues to be led by James Buffoni of Ryedale Group who said, “Whilst this has been a long and challenging process, we never wavered because the need for this standard in print is clear: this Level 2 represents a large part of the workforce in print. As such a practical development framework and recognition of achievement will benefit a lot of people who could otherwise be overlooked. We therefore welcomed the positive feedback and acknowledgement from the review panel at IfATE.” Ursula Daly, Programme Director at BPIF and main contact for the consortium proposal said, “This is indeed a great outcome for our industry and whilst we have a lot of work to do to get the standard and the assessment plan defined and we are delighted to have the opportunity to do so.” If you would like to get involved with the consortium that will then go on to develop the standard and the End Point Assessment Plan then please contact Ursula Daly at ursula.daly@bpif.org.uk For more information on the BPIF, visit: www.britishprint.com

SEVERN INVEST IN CANON’S NEW VARIOPRINT IX-SERIES Severn, based in Gloucester, will become the first UK company to install the new Canon varioPRINT iX2100. The device will be Severn’s third inkjet production printer from Canon and will help the company to further expand its offering to customers and welcome new business opportunities. Severn operates in three key markets; print, books, and mailing, and works with around 500 small, medium, and large companies, including charities and environmental organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. In recent years, Severn has seen major growth in book printing and publishing services, which now accounts for almost 25% of its revenue. In terms of colour printing, it primarily produces educational books and academic journals and wanted to grow its expertise in these areas. Severn has been working with Canon for a number of years and already owned a ColorStream 3900 continuous feed printer and a VarioPrint i300 sheetfed printer. Thanks to these purchases, Severn has on-boarded over 70 new publishing customers and grew its business by 50% between 2017 and 2020. As a result of this sustained business growth, Severn decided to invest in a new device to diversify its offering and expand its technical services for customers. When exploring different products, Severn knew it needed a reliable device that could offer high quality printing at a costeffective price. As a result, Severn approached Canon for advice

on its next acquisition. Ian Smith, Managing Director of Severn, said: “Canon works and lives with Severn, and has really helped us to transform and grow the business over the past few years. When we turned to them to look for a new device to help fuel ongoing growth, we were delighted to learn that the new varioPRINT iX-series was due to be launched. Canon is really at the forefront for inkjet printing and the new varioPRINT iX-series has set a new benchmark for this. The device delivers breakthrough quality that matches offset, toner, and liquid toner technologies, alongside the highest levels of uptime and reliability, without having to compromise on cost. It will enable us to offer

broader capabilities to customers, including the ability to print on a greater range of media from 60gsm uncoated to 350gsm coated, which will help to expand our customer base further in the future, both domestically and overseas.” As a result of the purchase, Severn has also hired a new Technical Director, Mark Allington, to create automated workflows and seamlessly manage all output devices. Thanks to the varioPRINT iX2100 and the team’s growing technical expertise, Severn’s aim is to seamlessly connect with customers and their warehouses via API technology. In doing so, Severn will open up new opportunities to engage with print buyers, publishers and print management companies with this new, expanded offering. Stuart Rising, Head of Commercial Print, Canon UK, said: “We’ve worked closely with Severn for a number of years, so we were thrilled when they decided to purchase our new varioPRINT iX-series. At Canon, we’re constantly looking for ways to help our customers expand their businesses by offering them the very latest technology. The varioPRINT iX-series not only offers customers high quality, productivity, and reliability, but also a cost-effective solution. As more opportunities are created in the market, the varioPRINT iX-series will help companies who are looking for a smooth transition to higher-quality inkjet printing.” www.canon.co.uk

CHROMA ENHANCES LAMINATION WITH FOLIANT FROM IFS Reading-based full service print provider Chroma has enhanced its in-house lamination service with investment in an Intelligent Finishing Systems supplied Foliant Vega 400A laminator and Foliant Multi-functional Inprinting Unit. Justin Earl, operations director, explains: “We already had a hand-fed laminator but needed something that could deal with longer run digital work as well as litho, as these jobs were being sent out to a trade finisher.” The Foliant was chosen following a recommendation from a member of staff that used one in another company and a review of some market alternatives. Earl expands: “The Foliant had the right balance of price and performance to meet our requirements. It was the only laminator we looked at that ran at anything like its advertised speed.” As for the impact it has made he says: “Being able to bring longer runs in-house has enabled us to deal with ever decreasing lead-times. As a result, we expect return on investment in less than 30 months.” He adds that despite the pandemic the order to installation process was very smooth: “There was no impact on ordering and training aside from observing social distancing measures.” The 18mpm B3 Foliant Vega 400A is a heavy duty, compact industrial laminating machine. It has an integrated deep pile vacuum feeder and a high

speed bump separator, with non-sticky pressure roller and in-run adjustable twin decurl bar and overlap system. It is equipped with the Foliant Multi-functional Inprinting Unit — a new addition that Diamond is looking to build into its service delivery. It makes foiling and spot varnish fast and affordable for short

JONES AND PALMER STREAMLINES PRODUCTION Jones and Palmer has refreshed its bindery capabilities and streamlined production with a Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS). The corporate communications agency works with a wide range of household names including Ocado, Superdry and United Utilities. It produces litho print on a KBA Rapida 75 and digital print on a Ricoh Pro C7100. Stephen O’Brien, Manufacturing and HR Director, explains: “We had a Muller Martini stitching line that we bought second hand in 1986. The time had come to replace it and we wanted a system that was easy to use. We liked the Horizon because of its flexibility. “It also works from a flat sheet and, while we produce both litho and digital, we think work will migrate more to digital. The bookletmaker is perfect for handling that. “We also liked it because it was easy to set up which means we can get work on and off it very quickly. It is ideally suited to fast turnaround short run work.” The 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200L landscape feed bookletmaker combines stitching and folding with the ability to handle sheets up to

640mm in length. JDF-ready, it offers instant setups via a large icon based colour touchscreen for user friendly operation. The screen can be used for on the run fine tune adjustments as well as the storage and recall of up to 200 jobs. The system was delivered in June and Mr 0’Brien adds: “The installation went very smoothly. The old line was taken out on the Monday, the Horizon SPF-200L was set up on the Tuesday and training was completed on the Wednesday – all within government guidelines. It has been operational from day one.” www.ifsl.uk.com

NEW CANON PROSTREAM 1800 Canon has announced the launch of its new ProStream 1800 continuous feed inkjet printer, the newest model in its ProStream 1000 series. With increased speeds of up to 133m/min, the new printer boasts the highest resolution and print quality of any digital printing press at that speed, making it the ideal solution for commercial printers who want to achieve ultimate performance. Supporting customers’ passion for print, the new ProStream 1800 has been designed to push the boundaries of commercial print to meet changing customer demands. Combining new inkjet innovations with proven offset printing techniques, the press strikes a unique balance between high productivity, superior print quality, flexibility and media versatility. Commercial printers can now expand their offering by migrating higher volume jobs from offset to digital inkjet. Boost production levels, slash turnaround times and increase profit margins across a wide range of applications, including premium and high volume direct mail, books, catalogues and magazines. With the higher web speed of 133m/min (66% faster than the ProStream 1000), the ProStream 1800 produces up to 107,500 A4 images or 11,300 B2 sheets 4/4 per hour while maintaining superior print quality. And increased speeds equate to higher throughput. Have the confidence to handle higher volumes of work for jobs today or in the future. The ProStream 1800 can achieve a very high level of print quality across a huge range of media, including standard offset coated, uncoated and inkjet optimised papers from 40gsm to 300gsm. Print calendars, posters and point of sale applications with the ability to print up to 556mm wide and 1,524mm long. Eliminate the need to stop production to switch between different format lengths to ensure a seamless changeover – providing additional flexibility and ease of use for operators. The press’s air floatation drying system dries all jobs evenly, so you can effectively print on a wide range of paper without compromising the high standards of the finished output. By not coming into contact with the paper, the

system protects the print image to ensure an optimal result and to preserve the gloss and paper surface. Artificial intelligence linked to a sensor continuously makes adjustments to the drying system during the print run to ensure the best quality. Whether you’re printing a fashion look book or a high value mailer, you can be sure that it will impress. The added bonus? It also maintains the optimal web temperature, reducing energy consumption. The ProStream 1800 uses native 1,200dpi piezo drop on demand print heads and proprietary polymer pigment inks with Canon ColorGrip to ensure colour consistency. Canon’s Inline Quality Control, a high performance camera system, also provides automatic print quality assurance, so operators can spend less time on quality control. The successful ProStream 1000 remains available and existing customers can easily upgrade to the ProStream 1800 if more volume is required, allowing them to easily adapt to changing market dynamics while maintaining high quality, speed and supporting a variety of media. Customers can see the new ProStream 1800 at the Customer Experience Centre in Poing, Germany or request a virtual demo. TWO NEW CUTTING TABLES FROM MORGANA Morgana Systems, Milton Keynes, has announced the addition of two new models to its popular range of flatbed cutters. Firstly, there is a new smaller “entry level” version of the popular and versatile Optima system, and secondly a more automated new addition to the range, the Omnia, complete with an automated feeder. The Optima V50 is the latest and smallest of the current range of flatbed cutters and is designed for digital printers needing to cut a wide range of substrates in thickness up to 20mm but who are tight on floorspace. The Omnia combines the versatility of the Optima products with regards to substrate range along with a newly designed sheet feeder and optical register system, meaning that the system can be set to run repetitive tasks without requiring an operator. The system can even be left to run unattended overnight. Commenting on the new additions, Ray Hillhouse, VP Sales & Marketing for the Plockmatic Group Offline Business Unit, said: “These two new units further enhance our range of cutting tables. The Optima V50 addresses the entry level sector, where a small but highly versatile device is an essential ingredient. It’s an ideal starting point for those seeing the need for a cutting table. “The Omnia breaks new ground in automating cutting table processes. For those businesses with a growing demand for repetitive tasks, Omnia can produce a great many tasks without the need for an operator to stand over the machine, including “lights out” production of work overnight.” Optima V50 — Optima V50 is the entry level cutting solution for short run cutting projects. Extremely compact and affordable, it’s the ideal solution for a company wishing to start producing mock-ups, prototypes, and small production lots without the need for die cutting. Optima V50 is a single head cutting system capable of swapping from one tool to another in less than 10 seconds without any adjustment. It comes as standard with a tangential cutting tool (cutting material up to 5mm thick), a creasing tool and a camera, which in combination with OptiCrop software, allows you to detect printing crop marks and perform contour cuts. An optional oscillating cutting tool will allow substrates up to 20 mm to be cut expanding the range of applications. The Optima V50 can hold two A3+ sheets or a material whose maximum size is 55 x 80cm. The machine comes with a basement workbench, a vacuum bed

for easier media holding, and a fold away pins system to aid easy alignment. The product is equipped with a creasing tool and a set of nine different creasing and perforating wheels that can handle cardstocks and corrugated cardboards. Omnia — When you need to automate long and repetitive operations, Omnia is the ideal solution. Set the desired workflow, start the process, and then Omnia will carry out the project independently, without the need for an operator for hours. At any stage of the production process Omnia will recognise and report errors or malfunctions, avoiding any wastage of materials. The oversized feeder and suction system automatically deliver materials into the cutting machine, which has a 600 x 800mm cutting table. The automatic crop mark detection allows a hands free cutting process and a status indicator will notify the operator when the feeder has dropped to the minimum quantity so It can be reloaded. The feeder can stack up to 500 sheets of 300gsm card stock. The QR Code feature improves workflow even further. The camera quickly detects the code, brings up the cut details, and then executes each project, eliminating cut lists. Average speed per sheet is calculated in 30/45 seconds when cutting A3+ sheet and a medium complexity package design. www.morgana.co.uk

BRAVE NEW WORLD

As we struggle out of the lockdown and start to come to terms with what may be a whole new way of working, it may be a good time to review where we are going as a print on demand service, and some of the clues may be in how we have adapted to changing times over the last decades. Martin Christie returns from furlough.

L

ong before the internet became a real commercial threat, people working at home, with a brand new PC and an A4 printer, were predicted to herald the end of over-the-counter printing. More recently, the 3D printer was expected to be in everyone’s house so that rather than buy anything, people would just make it themselves. Well, life is never as simple as the pundits predict and, as we know, merely buying a printer – any printer – is the easy bit. Making it work properly, servicing it and feeding it, well that’s where it gets a lot more complicated. So now more people will be working from home through necessity, in a brand new virtual world that would have been science fantasy even ten years ago, meeting in computer chat rooms, collaborating in cyberspace. It may be a practical solution short term if large numbers of office workers can no longer be accommodated in close quarters and businesses may be attracted to potential savings in high city centre rents. But is it sustainable in the longer term when the full implications of the changes have not been thought through? There may be more at risk than the loss of the business lunch. People are social by nature, and society has developed by co-operation and personal interaction. We also learn from that close contact through observation and example and, in so many ways, pick up pointers from each other, which were not directly sought or expected. This process of serendipity has been very central to human progress since one caveman watched another banging rocks together and thought of a way of making basic tools. Thinking outside of the box, rather than being constrained by it, is the key to evolution at every level. But is that going to be encouraged, or even allowed, in an environment that sees what it wants to see, and shows what it wants to show. Group chats with long-lost relatives may be fine to exchange news and gossip without the inconvenience of actually meeting them, but it may not be ideal for a progressive, forwardlooking working environment, where you may only meet the people in your group. One of the limitations of the internet is you only find what you are looking for, and this selfconfirming circle can produce quite negative results. We know from over-the-counter experience that a good number of customers 14

We know from over-the-counter experience that a good number of customers don’t really know what they want, which is why they prefer to come face to face with a professional who can advise and point them in the right direction don’t really know what they want, which is why they prefer to come face to face with a professional who can advise and point them in the right direction. While it’s great to have so much information at your fingertips, if you don’t know which button to push it’s like taking a stab in the dark, and picking things that you can’t actually see and touch is potentially flawed as we already know through experience. In a world when we are supposedly trying to cut down unnecessary journeys, it is perfect madness to have a large percentage of delivered goods returned as a matter of course. Even working from home, office workers will still need goods and services delivered somewhere as there are still plenty of things that cannot be provided by purely digital information. The often predicted demise of paper is still a long way off, and while the specifications may be changing, the need for hard copy is still very much with us. One of the reasons is that information still needs to be recorded and preserved so it can be kept and shared over time, not just with the temporary members of a chat room. Printed papers have been with us and preserved for centuries and handwritten manuscripts for many centuries before that. Digital information has no such track record, and many experts fear it may prove to be far more fragile. An ancient Persian King once asked his wise men to construct a phrase he could use that would always be true. After much deliberation, they come up with the adage this too shall pass away. Possibly the world’s first recorded sound bite, this prediction has now been updated for the digital world by one the internet’s wise heads, Vint Cerf, currently a vice president at Google. He is worried that all the images and documents we have been saving on computers will eventually be lost as hardware

and software becomes obsolete. Cerf fears that future generations will have little or no record of the 21st Century as we enter what he describes as a “digital Dark Age”. Old formats of documents that we’ve created or presentations may not be readable by the latest version of the software because backwards compatibility is not always guaranteed. “And so what can happen over time is that even if we accumulate vast archives of digital content, we may not actually know what it is.” This revelation may have shocked the cyber geeks who had no idea that their electronic world could crumble into dust as well as the temples of ancient civilisations. But it won’t surprise anyone who has worked in the printon-demand industry during the last decades, nor regular readers of this column. The days when hard copies of originals could be stacked in a drawer for future use are long gone. Backing up and storing all the vast amounts of digital information in different file formats is enough of a challenge, but there is also the problem that you still have to sort through it all to find anything. It’s surprising how quickly the general public has accepted digital information without question, and more worrying that it is assumed to be indestructible. The fact that they will commit valuable items, and even entire life history to small pieces of metal and plastic, reveals a faith in technology which is way beyond actual reliability. Backing up files and photos on discs and hard drives is good practice, and seems a bit like an insurance policy, but you are still hedging your bets on the likelihood of any one of them failing. The continual deterioration of digital files through saving and transfer is a potential nightmare described as data rot. And, as nobody has any form of digital format older than fifty years, no one really knows if it will survive more than a generation. SEPTEMBER 2020 • QUICK PRINT PRO

PIXEL PROPHET

It is sobering to remember that the space shuttle was retired, not because the mechanical aerodynamics were out of date, but because NASA could not service software that was more than several decades old. Now that the technology is literally in the hands of the general public worldwide it is much more of an issue because there is, apart from the basic binary mathematics, no standard for language or coding to interpret the information contained. In simple terms, we have various formats for text, graphics, digital photographs and now movies and those formats need the correct software to render those objects. Sometimes the standards we use to produce those objects fade away and are replaced by other alternatives and then software that is supposed to render images can’t render older formats, so the images are no longer visible. Of course out of all of the millions of images uploaded daily on social networking sites, if the vast majority of cute kittens and culinary masterpieces were lost to future generations, it would not be such a great tragedy for human history. But on a personal note, some things are worth preserving and records that need to be passed on to generations to come, and for that, there is one obvious solution, and that is print. In light of this, I am designing a storage device that will be able to contain these priceless prints. It will be simple, affordable, and made from recyclable material. It will be easily accessed and quickly searchable. I am going to call it a shoebox. I think I am on a winner here. Just have to work out what to do with all the shoes! The print industry has seen many developments over the last five hundred years, but the gradual nature of progress over the years has meant stability and a natural progression, and most importantly a product that can be easily shared and stored. We accept that nothing lasts forever, but we have the hard evidence that printed matter can be preserved, even for centuries, if it is properly cared for. In contrast, we have yet to see digital QUICK PRINT PRO • SEPTEMBER 2020

information survive more than a generation, and worse experience difficulties in transferring and sharing it with others. Apart from the short-term unreliability of digital information, the longer-term concern is literally how long it will last. It has two aspects. There is the potential degradation of data over time, and continually save and resaving. It is recognised, but impossible to quantify. The second aspect is the obsolescence of the software and hardware needed to read and reproduce the data. But being able to use it doesn’t mean you have to understand it, much like driving a car doesn’t necessitate an in-depth knowledge of the internal combustion engine or the workings of the clutch mechanism. However, just like the car comparison, when there is a problem like it won’t start or is making an unfamiliar noise, then you have to take it to an expert for advice. So the newly created generation of home workers may have mastered Zoom, but how are they going to save all the information other than playing back endless video episodes and editing the important bits. Will we see a new role for the copy typist turning all those words

of wisdom into word documents? So many things have not been thought through in the rush to form a short term solution. There also many things that cannot be properly viewed, especially on a small screen which the majority of people will be using. Large detailed plans, lots of lists of figures all become difficult if scrolling through a limited viewing device, and the potential for missed information is increased. We will already have suffered from customers supposedly checking proofs on a mobile phone while no doubt also checking social media updates. Putting all of the practical issues aside, there is, of course, one fundamental quality in favour of print, and that is the sheer pleasure of holding something substantial and permanent, not a fleeting view of a screengrab or snapshot. Ironically as it may seem, in the future, the very fact that we are all doing so much online in the virtual world may make actual print more respected and valued. Print still has a future as long as there are professionals available to preserve it. To misquote William Shakespeare “Oh brave new world that has such people in IT.” 15

20-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

GOING VIRTUAL: 10TH ANNUAL

POWER OF PRINT SEMINAR

The 10th annual Power of Print seminar, taking place on Tuesday 3rd November, was always expected to feature an exciting spin to celebrate this special anniversary.

A

fully virtual seminar was perhaps unexpected, but the possibilities and opportunities for just such an event are no less exciting. The seminar – organised by Two Sides and the BPIF, in partnership with Canon and Fedrigoni – will bring together eight leading experts from across the spectrum of print, publishing and paper based packaging and beyond. Jonathan Tame, Managing Director of Two Sides, says, “Print has played an essential role during the coronavirus crisis, from governments using direct mail to safely reach vulnerable households, to newspapers and magazines providing crucial information and much needed enjoyment to people in their homes. Even in a changing landscape, the power of print remains unassailable and this year’s seminar will highlight the opportunities, and indeed challenges, for print in this new world.” Leaders from their respective sectors, including direct mail, publishing, agencies, brands, and packaging, will enlighten, inspire, 20

and inform the audience with their take on what the future holds. The Power of Print virtual seminar will take place across two sessions on one day, with speakers being broadcast live from Canon’s state of the art facilities in their central London office. Mark Lawn, Director of Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe, says, “Canon are extremely excited to be part of a completely virtual Power of Print seminar for the first time in this special event’s 10 year history. As an industry, we need to be even more agile, considering new services and new approaches. The seminar provides a perfect platform for learning and inspiration.” Not limited by capacity, geography, or even cost, the virtual seminar offers an excellent opportunity for all members of the print, publishing and allied industries to join and unite in knowledge. Charles Jarrold, Chief Executive of the BPIF, adds, “This year’s Power of Print virtual seminar is a must attend event for everyone in the industry. Whether you are a chief executive,

sales manager, or apprentice, there will be information which will surely inform and inspire after an immensely challenging year.” Access to the Power of Print virtual seminar costs just £29 per attendee for members of Two Sides and the BPIF and £39 for non-members. DRUPA 2021 SHORTENED RUNTIME: APRIL 20-28 drupa, the world’s leading trade fair for printing technologies, has decided to reduce the duration of the trade fair from eleven to nine days for 2021. By doing so, it is responding to the wishes of the partner association VDMA (Printing and Paper Technology Trade Association) and many exhibitors to make the trade fair presentation more efficient and to concentrate the volume of visitors in a targeted manner. This is also in reaction to any continuing travel activities and restrictions. “Since we are currently assuming that fewer visitors from overseas will be able to travel to drupa 2021, we consider a reduction from eleven to nine days to be sensible in order to direct visitor flows more efficiently. At the same time, the duration of nine days ensures that running machines can still be shown, which is a unique selling point of drupa,” explains drupa President Claus BolzaSchünemann. Despite some corona related cancellations, the current booking status remains at a high level with

over 1,500 exhibitors and a net hall space of more than 140,000 sqm. This once again underlines the industry’s confidence in the international appeal of the event and the need for face to face meetings, acquisition of new customers or live presentation of running machines still exists. “Many of our customers also see it as their own responsibility to strengthen the industry and provide important impulses personally on site,” says drupa Director Sabine Gelder In order to guarantee a professional and safe trade fair as usual, drupa not only adapted the

general conditions but also relies on a hygiene and infection protection concept that is continuously adapted to the latest corona protection regulations and official requirements. Sabine Geldermann points out: “The character of drupa in 2021, due to the pandemic and hygiene regulations, will certainly be different from what we are used to, but it will continue to make a very important contribution to the economic recovery.” Additional information on Messe Düsseldorf’s hygiene and infection protection concept can be found at www.drupa.com

THE PRINT SHOW POSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER 2021 Organisers of The Print Show have confirmed that the event will be postponed until 2021, due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in the UK. The Print Show, and new sister event The Sign Show, had been due to run from September 27th to 29th at the NEC in Birmingham, with a number of leading brands having already committed to the show. The two events will now run from September 28th to 30th next year at the NEC. Event director Chris Davies says that while every effort had been made to go ahead with the event, it has become clear in recent weeks that restrictions caused by Covid-19 mean that hosting the show this year would not be possible. “Before anything else, the health and safety of our exhibitors and guests is our number one concern, and while it was a difficult decision, we believe this is the right course of action,” Davies says. “While we hope the situation with Covid-19 will have improved by September, there is no guarantee that the event would be permitted to go ahead due to the current government restrictions. “The government is yet to make any announcements as to when large gatherings or events can take place again, and we have to be realistic. Planning to host a large scale event like The Print Show this year is just not feasible, given the level of uncertainty as to what situation the UK will be in come September. “Therefore, we have decided that the best course of action would be to postpone both The Print Show and sister event The Sign Show until

22

next year, when we hope the worst of the crisis will have subsided.” Davies also revealed that The Print Show has reached an agreement with many of the companies that had already signed up to attend in 2020 to instead exhibit at the rearranged event next year. “We’re finalising the details with our exhibitors and we’ll be making a number of announcements in the coming weeks and months, but it is fantastic to see this level of confidence in the show,” Davies says. “I’ve been touched by the amount of support our exhibitors have offered and I will be delighted to

welcome them to the rearranged edition of The Print Show next year. “We remain fully committed to delivering a quality event that solely focuses on the UK printing industry. The Print Show is the only event dedicated to the UK market and as we emerge from lockdown and build for a brighter future, we believe our event will play a key role in this recovery process.” For more updates and news about The Print Show and The Sign Show, follow the events on Twitter: @theprintshow / @thesignshowuk www.theprintshow.co.uk www.thesignshow.co.uk

PERSONALISED PRODUCTS

WHY YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS DTG PRINTING

GO DIRECT

This article, authored by Nick Macfarlane, direct to garment sales specialist at Ricoh UK, looks at the personalised products market and the potential offered by digital direct to garment textile printing…

T

he promotional goods market is creative and varied, covering everything from luxury corporate gifts to cheap and cheerful giveaways. But as the sector gets busier, and the events calendar recovers from a fallow period, it’s essential that businesses in this market work smarter. Textile applications and direct to garment (DTG) technology could be a profitable area to explore. Wearable items, like T-shirts and sweatshirts, make up a big share of the promotional and personalised goods market, 31%. Bags comprise a further 8% and textiles 3%, meaning businesses could access almost half of the available work with the right textile-printing systems. When you consider the size of the promotional and personalised goods sector, the potential profits are hard to ignore: around €57 billion retail revenue worldwide in 2017. Promotional products — that is, goods

purchased for marketing purposes mainly by schools, sports teams, banks, non-profits and so on — make up 91% of the market. Currently, these are usually produced with analogue print processes. The remaining nine per cent is personalised products, purchased mainly by small businesses and consumers for gifts and for celebration purposes — commemorative T-shirts, for example. Importantly, this piece of the market is mainly catered for by digital print and has a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10%. In comparison, the analogue heavy promotional products market, although bigger, has a CAGR of 2%. The personalised products sector, and the digital textile printing technology designed for these applications, therefore offers significant investment potential. Digital textile printing, and especially DTG, meets the needs of today’s consumers and, crucially, print businesses. It’s

more agile and versatile, allowing short and single runs, and lots of design options. In fact, the Keypoint Intelligence industry forecast, using data from the 2018 FESPA print industry census, discovered a raft of advantages. When asked, ‘Which DTG printer attributes or features are most interesting to you?’, 53% of respondents said faster print speeds, 48% said white ink, 33% said more colours, and greater production capacity was referenced by a further 33%. Some 29% found automated garment loading and unloading of interest, and the same percentage liked the ability to print a whole garment (it’s possible to print over some fastenings). Analogue can’t compete on these features for truly personalised textiles. That’s not to say there’s not a place for screen printing; analogue and digital can happily work side by side to create a fantastic complementary service. Indeed, the poll found 27% of respondents were attracted to the potential to mix analogue and digital print. Some DTG printers are really compact and very easy to operate, so they can fit neatly into a workflow from day one. For example, the Ricoh Ri 100 has a small footprint and simple print workflow — comparable to a standard desktop printer — but with lots of creative potential. You can print colourful designs, bold slogans and even accurate photographs directly to T-shirts, sweatshirts, shopping bags, cushion covers and more, in just minutes. It’s compact and fast enough to offer a portable, reliable solution for events and exhibitions, or as a permanent addition to a retail shop or print business. The Ricoh Ri 1000 is the next level up: a production DTG printer that can print a full colour image on a light coloured T-shirt in just 28 seconds. For darker colours, users can print a base layer of white ink to create a blank canvas. It’s compatible with polyester as well as cotton and quick change platens allow switching between different garments fast, for a practically non-stop workflow. These Ricoh DTG systems also offer sustainability benefits — thanks to their ecofriendly water based inks — meeting another requirement of the modern marketplace. The direct printing method also means no waste transfer materials, which additionally reduces consumables costs. They’ve been engineered by a print specialist with decades of manufacturing experience to provide maximum potential in a small package, giving businesses a fast, straightforward way to start selling wearable personalised products. It’s a fun, creative market that could be potentially lucrative for your business. Now is a great time to invest in this equipment and explore the opportunities it presents. Right now you could even grab those opportunities for free: Ricoh is giving away a Ri 100 solution to one lucky business. GREEN ISSUES

PRINT HIVE

GREENER DECOR

The Print Hive responded to the call for greener decor by investing in a new Roland EJ-DECO.

T

he Print Hive can meet increasing demand in two key areas – sustainable graphics and customised interiors – without sacrificing speed, quality or affordability, following the installation of a Roland EJ-640 DECO, a dedicated printing solution for the thriving interior decoration market. Chaz Dobson, Director of The Print Hive, says he was attracted to the EJ-640 DECO when it was launched in early 2020. Established in a spare bedroom with a Roland printer/cutter eight years ago, The Print Hive now operates from a 3,000sq/ft unit in Weston-super-Mare. Around 90% of its business is to the trade — sign makers, design agencies and interior designers — with individual orders for products like business cards and flyers making up the remaining ten per cent. In addition, The Print Hive runs House of Walls, an ecommerce site for custom printed interior decor. “We work on lots of great projects and our clients are more like colleagues to us,” Chaz comments. “Their requirements change over time, so we need to continually upgrade our equipment.” The Print Hive has been using a Roland SOLJET XR-640 printer/cutter with white ink for several years, alongside a printer with latex based ink. When the Roland EJ-640 DECO was released Chaz and the team chose to switch from latex to its water based technology. “The latex ink system suited us at the time but now, for interior decor applications in particular, we prefer the Roland EJ-640 DECO,” he says. Chaz was particularly attracted to the

environmental and health benefits of the EJ640 DECO’s water based inks. The specialist formulation has achieved an A+ AgBB air rating, conforms with EN15102 standards and has been awarded the highly accredited OEKOTEX ECO PASSPORT — all certifications proving its low impact. “Our customers are more environmentally conscious and care about what happens throughout a product’s life, and the water based DECO has green credentials that other printers don’t. “It’s also faster and, because there’s no

drying or outgassing, we can process prints straightaway. Our customers also want high end products. The DECO is very high quality, with more vivid, punchy colours compared to the latex system.” Chaz adds that it was important that any new hardware investment would fit into its existing workflow. The Roland EJ-640 DECO is designed to accommodate rolls of wallpaper in standard sizes, for instance, which is helping The Print Hive and House of Walls meet demand for customised interiors. “The commercial market, for example offices and estate agents, is still strong but the domestic market is definitely getting bigger,” he says. “People want personalised products for their homes, whether that’s wallpaper, canvases or cushion covers – and with the Roland EJ-640 DECO we can offer all of these.” Furthermore, The Print Hive has found the large capacity ink pouches for the Roland EJ-640 DECO more cost-efficient than the ink for its previous system. This is an important consideration at any time but especially as businesses recover from the impact of COVID-19. “In April 2020 our sales were down 60%,” says Chaz. “In May it picked up, more so in June, July and August partly thanks to orders for floor graphics and safety signs. Using the new DECO side by side with the eco-solvent SOLJET means we can accept any order. You name it, we can supply it.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

FOLLOW THE FLOCK

TheMagicTouch announce an additional 15 colours to their existing range of Premium Flock. Over recent years, due to the boom in personalisation using HTV products onto workwear, sportswear, fashion and promotional garments, the company has witnessed a growing increase in the use of flock for garment decoration. Having always been considered a more upmarket option than standard flex, the raised effect of flock is also widely compared by many to give the look and feel of embroidery. The raised transfer effect gives a quality appearance on T-Shirts, hoodies, high-viz garments, polo shirts, bags, caps, jackets, sports shirts and most other cotton and polyester apparel. The new additions take the choice of Premium Flock colours to 40, which is considered to be one of the widest ranges available in the UK. Available by the linear metre with a width of 500mm. All flock products are OEKO-TEX certified against harmful substances. The high quality flocked hot-melt film on a polyester carrier has high elasticity and outstanding washing durability with fastness up to 60°c. Precise and intricate designs can be easily cut and weeded using standard plotters and cutters. The weeded transfers are then applied at 160°-170°c for 15-17 seconds using medium pressure on a professional heat press. The flock has outstanding cutting and weeding features making it the #1 choice for garment decorators throughout Europe. PIPI PICKS HORIZON FOLDER TO WIN NEW WORK Pipi Print & Packaging has expanded capacity and enhanced its service delivery following investment in a Horizon AF-406F automatic folder. The Leicester operation chose the system to enable it to win new work, streamline productivity and meet increased demand from the pharmaceutical industry. Hitesh Parmar, sales, explains: “We have always folded leaflets inhouse on a semi automatic folder. It was time to invest in a fully automated solution.” He continues: “We have known about the Horizon AF-406F for a long time. We chose the folder as it can readily handle the different types of leaflets that we are folding. As we continue to grow within certain markets, lead-time is crucial. The new folder will help massively due to quick makereadies and running speeds. We also liked the functionality that the folder comes with. It is very easy to manage and straight forward when setting up different jobs at a time. We did look at alternatives but the Horizon AF-406F was perfect for our business.” Since it has been installed the folder has been meeting expectations: “We have become even more efficient, jobs are being produced quicker

28

and orders have become easier to manage thanks to the easy job set up. We expect it to help increase capacity and win new business.” The Horizon AF-406F is a JDF ready automated modular buckle folder. Its 6+6 buckle modular concept allows for simple to complex fold patterns that maximise folding variations. Its colour touchscreen controls are intuitive for quick operator training and efficient set up while advanced and accurate automation helps reduce

paper waste and energy consumption. As for working with IFS Parmar says: “It is the first time we have worked with IFS but it is a great company with great vision. The team was very helpful in understanding our needs. They assisted us every step of the way. The installation process went smoothly and the operator training went very well. We were kept up to date about any changes due to the pandemic.” www.ifsl.uk.com

BOSS BLOC ANTI-BACTERIAL LAMINATING FILM In response to the reopening of much of the hospitality industry, Leicester based print agency welove2print.com and sister company webxprint.co.uk, have taken the decision to add Vivid Laminating Technologies latest innovation, Boss Bloc Anti-Bacterial laminating film, to their extensive choice of print finishing applications. Due to the on-going pandemic, their customers were looking for an alternative solution to wiping clean printed items or the considerable waste of throwing them away after every use. Boss Bloc proved to be the perfect solution to this problem, with its silver ion technology providing protection between usual cleaning. The fact the anti-bacterial effect does not leach out and is designed to last the lifetime of the product it’s added to provides peace of mind to businesses and consumers. Whilst maintaining the very highest standards of hygiene within restaurants, pubs, cafes and hotels. To date, Welove2print.com has been able to use Boss Bloc to provide items such as menus, business cards, flyers and much more. They initially reached out to Vivid Laminating Technologies due to feedback from their customer base. Kunal Pabari, Operations Manager of Welove2print told us “it was vitally important for our customers to try and keep their experience as normal as possible. Thorough cleaning after every use wasn’t and option and neither was single use items as it became too expensive. So, we set out to find an alternative

and Vivid provided us with exactly that”. It’s not just the WeLove2Print team who have been impressed with Boss Bloc. Commenting on feedback they’ve have received from their customer base, Kunal said; “Our clients have been very happy. There has been no impact on quality, Boss Bloc looks great and works exactly like a standard laminating film but with the huge added value and benefit of it being anti-bacterial and eliminating 99% of bacteria”. On their relationship with Vivid, Kunal, said “We have been really happy with the support we have had from Vivid as well as the Anti-Bacterial Lamination. The film a great selling tool and a win-win solution for both us and our customers.” Discussing the finer details of Boss Bloc, Richard Marlow, Sales Director at Vivid put forward, “It’s manufactured in Europe as well as tested and approved to ISO 22196 standards, meaning our customers can rest assured both them and their clients are protected. It’s a great option for printers and being able to present this as an option to their customers is a great way to differentiate their offering”. NATURAL PRINT SOLUTIONS SAME DAY SERVICE Essex-based Natural Print Solutions has installed Ricoh’s latest direct-to-garment (DTG) printer, the Ricoh Ri 100, to bring the production of branded workwear and personalised merchandise in-house. The company says it is now able to offer its clients a same-day service at ‘exceptional’ levels of quality. A successful family-run business, Natural Print Solutions prides itself on the personal service it extends to its clients. Proudly claiming ‘if it can be printed, we can supply it’, the company supports London city clients and local businesses with a range of printed collateral, including stationery, brochures, signage, promotional merchandise and clothing. Until recently, Natural Print Solutions used external suppliers to print T-shirts and other garments - a process that increased costs and lead times. Thanks to a chance conversation with a sales representative, the business discovered that Ricoh had introduced an all-in-one, compact inkjet system that could print directly onto garments at outstanding quality: the Ricoh Ri 100. With a price tag of under £4,250 and an assurance that it would ‘pay for itself within two sets of ink’, the Ri 100 was an affordable

30

investment that would allow Natural Print Solutions to produce high-quality merchandise in-house. The new system was installed at its Leigh-on-Sea premises at the end of 2019. Matthew Bradford, owner of Natural Print Solutions, comments: “The Ri 100 is simple to use. It is as easy as printing onto paper. And, because the process is digital, we can change the design from one garment to the next.” The Ri 100 is perfect for short-run applications and compatible with a wide variety of merchandise, enabling the business to expand its range to include branded workwear such as polo

shirts and fleeces, and event merchandising like promotional T-shirts and tote bags. Matthew adds: “Our customers love the quality of the merchandise produced on the Ri 100. The ink is absorbed into the fabric, giving it a soft finish. The garments can be washed, and unlike vinyl or transfer media, the images don’t crack or peel.” Images are printed directly onto garments mounted on interchangeable trays. The ink is absorbed by the fabric and cured when the tray is moved to the integral heating unit - a process, according to Natural Print Solutions, that takes less than five minutes from start to finish. Furthermore, Ricoh’s bundled design app makes it easy to create eye-catching graphics: images can be dropped into a pre-set template and overlaid with text, with designs previewed on-screen before they are printed. As well as the speed of order fulfilment, Natural Print Solutions says its clients appreciate the quality of the merchandise printed on the Ricoh Ri 100. It plans to reach even more customers with its garment printing business in the future, with an Etsy store opening soon. www.naturalprintsolutions.com www.products.ricoh.co.uk/direct-to-garment

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? MUSIC STORE ROBBERY

A music store was robbed last week. Thieves made away with the lute.

STORM DAMAGE

A storm blew away 25% of my roof last night. Oof!

SCIENTIFIC STUDY SHOWS

My local college just announced the end of a scientific study. Results showed that out of 2,293,618,367 people, 94% are too lazy to actually read that number.

MY HOROSCOPE

My horoscope said I was going to get my heart broken in 12 years time. So I bought a puppy to cheer me up.

DEMANDING PAYMENT

A lawyer’s dog is having a great time running around the neighbourhood unleashed — it heads directly to the butcher shop and pilfers a roast. The butcher heads over to the lawyer’s office and asks, “If a dog running unleashed steals a piece of meat from my store, do I have a right to demand payment for the meat from the dog’s owner?” The lawyer replies, “Absolutely,” and the butcher informs him that he owes him £18.50 because his unleashed dog just stole a roast from his shop. Speechless, the lawyer, goes on to write the butcher a cheque for the damages. A few days later, the butcher checks his mailbox and discovers an envelope from the lawyer. Inside the envelope is an invoice that read: “£75 due for a consultation.”

NO JOGGING

2014: Didn’t jog. 2015: Didn’t jog. 2016: Didn’t jog. 2017: Didn’t jog. 2018: Didn’t jog. 2019: Didn’t jog. 2020: Still haven’t jogged. This is a running joke.

32ND BIRTHDAY

My wife and I just celebrated her 32nd birthday yesterday. It was the fastest birthday party we’ve ever had.

Two cows are standing next to each other in a field.

NICE CHANGE

Customer: I’d like to try that dress in the window. Assistant: I’m sorry madam, I’m afraid you’ll have to use the fitting room, like everybody else.

BLIND DATE

“How was your blind date?” a college student asked her roommate. “Terrible!” the roommate answered. “He showed up in his 1932 Rolls Royce.” “Wow! That’s a very expensive car. What’s so bad about that?” “He was the original owner!”

JOBS, CASH, AND HOPE

Back in the day, we had Steve Jobs, Bob Hope, and Johnny Cash. Now we have no jobs, no hope, and no cash. Please don’t let Kevin Bacon die!

GOING SWIMMING

While visiting a water show a tourist asked one of the divers, “Why do scuba divers always fall backward off their boats? To which the diver replied, “If they fell forward, they’d still be in the boat.”

MIDLIFE CRISIS

What is it called when a chameleon can’t change its colours anymore? A reptile dysfunction.

COUNT DOWN

What do you call a hen that counts her own eggs? A mathemachicken.

RENTING AN APARTMENT

How many bugs do you need to rent out an apartment? Ten-ants.

GOLF TERM EXPLANATION

A lady was taking her first golf lesson. She asked the instructor, “Is the word spelled p-u-t or p-u-t-t?” “P-u-t-t is correct,” he replied. “P-u-t means to place something where you want it. P-u-t-t means, merely a vain attempt to do the same thing.”

Daisy says to Dolly, “I was artificially inseminated this morning.”

GROWING HERBS

I’ve started growing herbs in my garden. To help identify them I’m growing them in alphabetical order. My neighbour asked me, “How do you find the time?” I said, “Easy, it’s right here next to the sage.”

AD RESPONSE

One shop owner asks another, “So, have you had any responses to your ad that you’re looking for a night watchman?” “Yeah, we got robbed last night.”

PLAIN ENGLISH

What do you say to comfort an English teacher? They’re, there, their.

WHAT’S THE WORD?

A girl is doing a crossword puzzle. “What’s a sevenletter word for ‘easily perceived or understood’ that starts with ‘O’?” “Isn’t it obvious?” “It should be, but I can’t figure it out. That’s why I’m asking.”

THOUGHT I RECOGNISED YOU

Attending the funeral of a close friend I thought I recognised a lady I had not seen in 25 years. I went up to her and said, “You look like Helen Black...” She replied and walked away, “You don’t look so good in blue pinstripe!”

CDS VS. LPS

Compact disc manufacturers were worried about music industry plans to phase out CDs and bring back LPs. Defending the threat to their livelihood, the CD manufacturers took their case to court, where the judge listened patiently to a lengthy debate about the relative merits of CDs and LPs. After weighing up the various arguments, the judge ruled in favour of LPs. The CD manufacturers were furious. “Do we have no right of appeal?” they demanded.

“I don’t believe you,” says Dolly.

“It’s true, no bull!” exclaims Daisy.
