Family trattoria style Italian dining, located in the heart of Wokingham, Angelo and his team at Ruchetta offer exceptional service, in a charming and relaxed atmosphere, with the most delicious food.

“We look forward to welcoming you and your family and friends! Buon Appetito, Angelo” ‘Nothing could have been better....’

“Ruchetta continues to be one of our favourite restaurants. We recently visited for a meal with family and friends and Angelo and the whole team are absolutely superb. The ambience and setting is very warm, welcoming and friendly, the service just the right balance of attentiveness without being OTT. The food is just the best combination of superb quality ingredients and recipes that are a good blend of traditional Italian cooking with a contemporary twist. Wine selection is also very good and overall result is just superb. It is not often that you eat out and feel nothing could have been better - but Ruchetta achieves that!”

“Sei molto gentile” Angelo ‘Can’t wait to re-visit...’

“Six of us had a fabulous early evening meal. Super friendly and helpful staff. Lovely clean, atmospheric restaurant. A very popular place. We ordered mixed starters, which is a great way to try a bit of everything. The Fritti Misto was particularly good, as was the Burrata. I had Scoglio as a main. One of the best Italian dishes I have ever had! The base of black tagliolini was lovely and the mixture of seafood simply superb. Scallops to die for (maybe a tad dramatic, but they were stonkingly good). My wife had one of the specials of the day a venison pasta dish, which also went down well. A couple of bottles of wine also went down well. The portions are reasonably substantial. We didn’t make desert! It’s a popular restaurant, so well worth booking. Can’t wait to re-visit!”

“Ciao, ci vediamo presto” Angelo “I’m ten years old and I love going to Ruchetta. Ruchetta is the best restaurant that my family and I have been to in Wokingham...”

“Grazie Bambino” Angelo

Five Minutes With: Gayle Sparks ~ Enchanting Glass Designs Jacqui Priestley, owner and editor of Wokingham Local magazine spends 5 minutes with Gayle Sparks, entrepreneur and business owner of Enchanting Glass Designs, based at Holme Grange Craft Village in Wokingham. WL: When did you know you wanted to become a business owner and entrepreneur? GS: Whilst working full time in a corporate environment I became aware that my life revolved 100% around my company and that I had a poor work life balance and therefore needed to find something for me. Glass is what I found and then I dreamt of teaching the art when I retired. WL: How did you get the idea for your business? GS: Upon being made redundant I took my dream to another level. I wanted to not only teach but successfully sell my art too, and whilst doing craft fairs and pop up exhibitions it became evident that I could have my own shop front. 14

WL: How do you come up with new ideas for your business? GS: Every day inspirations from what I see driving to work, to being out and about, but also being inspired by others through meeting many people, and social media. WL: What motivates you? GS: My achievements and my pieces of art along with my long-standing customers. WL: What is the best piece of advise you have been given? GS: Never give up, keep believing in yourself and hard work reaps rewards. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

WL: What do you like best about being at Holme Grange Craft Village? GS: This is the perfect environment for my craft with many other like-minded tenants and visitors. It’s a peaceful and tranquil place to be which enables me to be creative. WL: What do you like best about Wokingham? GS: Its rural location - you don’t have to go far to be in the woods and surrounding fields. WL: What do you do to relax? GS: I head to the beach, preferably with the sun shining so that I can lie out on my sun lounger with a glass on hand, reading a book. WL: Who is your biggest inspiration? GS: I don’t really have one person that I am really inspired by but I admire people who have grown up with nothing and turned into extremely successful business entrepreneurs.

WL: What is your future ambition? GS: To ensure as many people as possible can enjoy and experience the creativity of fused glass. WL: It is lovely to speak with you today Gayle, and we wish you all the very best for the future.

School’s Out! BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BORING!

Making plans to entertain your children over the Summer Holidays may seem like a daunting task but fortunately Berkshire Mummies is on hand to help – and not everything you do has to cost a fortune. Parks and playgrounds are a popular choice for a low cost/free family trip out. California Country Park* and Dinton Pastures* have a wide range of play equipment for all ages, picnic areas, refreshments and walking trails around the lakes. Other play areas which are worth visiting are Elms Field and The Pinewood Centre and we also recommend the new Cantley Park Play Area – the interactive elements are impressive and sure to be a big hit! If you travel outside Wokingham, The Look Out* in Bracknell is a lovely place to spend a few hours – the play area is large and free to use and you can also walk/go den building in the forest. Finchampstead Baptist Church (FBC) not only has a vast play area but there is also a games area with a running track (great for scooters WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

and bikes) and mini football pitches, plus a woodland walk. Children love water play and splash pads make for a fun few hours of entertainment! California Country Park’s* paddling pool can get busy so you will need to book a slot in advance for a small fee. You could also visit Christchurch Paddling Pool in Reading, Woodford Park’s Paddling Pool, or the splash pad at Great Hollands Pavilion in Bracknell. Jocks Lane in Bracknell has a lovely bright splash pad as well as a play area and café. A walk is a great way to help children burn off some energy – but it doesn’t have to be boring! Try geocaching – all you need is the app on your phone. Or orienteering – you can download a map on the Dinton Pastures website which takes you on a course around the country park. You could also follow the Mosaics Trail next time you are walking around Wokingham town (simply download the free Wokingham Town History App to get you started). These are just a few of the highlights that Wokingham has to offer for children this Summer – please do follow Berkshire Mummies for even more inspiration. 18

Wow, time sure does fly! At the time of writing, it’s coming up to 11 months since we opened in September 2021. It seems like only yesterday that we were fitting out our salon in Denmark Street last summer. We’ve been thrilled by the warm reception from everyone, and it’s been our pleasure to welcome all our lovely guests. It’s especially gratifying when people who’ve been to Thailand tell us how happy they are to have a truly authentic Thai massage experience in Wokingham. We’ll be celebrating our first anniversary this September with a special treat for our regular guests, which we’ll announce nearer the time. Follow us on social media so that you’ll be among the first to know!

Thai massage is a great way to relieve muscular stress, tension and knots. You’ve probably seen pictures of skeletal muscles portrayed as bundles of fibres. Each fibre is made up of a huge number of muscle cells, which contain thousands of tiny, stacked structures called sarcomeres. These work like microscopic ratchets during contraction which release to relax the muscle. Sometimes, this ratchet mechanism doesn’t completely release, causing the muscle to retain tension. This can result in those uncomfortable knots and tightness! By manipulating the muscle tissue, Thai massage helps release those stuck ratchets, easing the tension and discomfort. Want to try it for yourself? We’ll give you a 10% discount of your next massage at The Lazy Frog this July & August. Simply mention the special phrase: “I’m a local frog fan” when booking. Note that you can only use this discount once and not with 10am bookings or couple’s sessions because they’re discounted by at least 10% already.

WHAT’S INSIDE A MUSCLE?

Snap, crackle and pop! Great for a breakfast cereal, but bad news when it’s coming from your head, neck, shoulders or back. We spend long hours working in one way or another, and that can mean putting hours of stress on the body. It could be repetitive motion, physical exertion or even maintaining a desk-bound posture in front of a computer. The human head weighs roughly 5 to 6 kg, supported on just 7 vertebrae in the neck. That might not sound like much but imagine holding two new-born babies at arm’s length… arms would sag after just a few minutes, never mind trying to support that weight all day long. That’s why you feel that tender tightness down the neck and across the shoulders at the end of the day. Our massages are a fabulous way to ease those tight knots buried within tense muscles. Our traditional Thai massage techniques apply a combination of tissue manipulation, acupressure and limb stretches (assisted yoga positions) to work out all that tension. Despite all that, we’ve even had some guests fall asleep on our massage beds during a session. That’s how relaxing it can be! Thai massage dates back centuries. Each Thai village had a massage healer who helped relieve the aches and pains of hard-working villagers toiling under peasant society. It’s even recognised by UNESCO as part of our intangible human heritage!

Experience it for yourself. Make an appointment via our online booking system at www.thelazyfrog.co.uk, message us via social media, or call us on 0118 374 3693 27 Denmark Street, Wokingham, RG40 2AY

“I’ve decided that interior design is 99% logistics and 1% design” Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr, and series winner, Banjo Beale

BANJO After eight weeks of decisions, dramas and driving thousands of miles to secure those very special reclaimed and second-hand items to make his super-stylish schemes stand out, Australian-born cheesemaker, marketeer and stylist Banjo Beale, 35, who lives with his partner Ro on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, has been crowned the winner of Interior Design Masters 2022. Head judge Michelle Ogundehin was joined by fashion and interiors designer Matthew Williamson and businesswoman and owner of the London Cocktail Club, Sarah Willingham, for the final. Banjo and his fellow finalist, Amy Davies, were each tasked with a personal project to transform two floors of their own bar in Soho, central London, both in desperate need of a style refresh. Banjo’s client wanted a sleek ‘British members’ club’ vibe. Banjo admitted that he’d never been in such an establishment in his life. The winning result? Elegant, understated and so impressive, the bar’s owner has now asked Banjo to restyle his own apartment. Banjo – nicknamed by partner Ro, because ‘he’s highly-strung’ – when he came back down to earth after taking the winner’s crown, said he couldn’t quite believe it. ‘’I was genuinely, really surprised 26

and overwhelmed and speechless. It was such a long rollercoaster, the whole process, and to be standing at the end an absolute winner, well I did cry. I know, I’m a crier – happy tears, sad tears, overwhelmed tears, every kind of tears – and at the end, it was probably tears of exhaustion. The entire process is exhausting, don’t underestimate that. I don’t shop in big bucks stores, so it involved a lot of driving. It wasn’t unusual for me to drive to Grimsby, then back to London, then to Bristol or somewhere, then back, just to collect that piece of treasure. I’m Australian, so driving is just natural to me, but it was hard because I couldn’t go home and decompress every week. I spent lots of time on the road and lots of time in hotels. I never mentioned why I like a light fitting on the show, and perhaps I should. It’s a big like this. You know if you put on a few extra pounds, you might buy WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

yourself a nice pair of shoes to give yourself an instant boost? A light fitting is like that, it’s the fastest way to get a really easy result, a nice big result in a room. My intuition for interior design comes from when I was a kid, my mum would let me re-arrange the furniture in our lounge room. I would always decorate my own room. And I would do installations for my mum and relatives and neighbours to admire. I would be like, ‘look, but don’t touch.’ I grew up in the country in Western Australia and it wasn’t the done thing to go into interior design. I went a different direction, advertising. It was always in the back of my mind, but never quite happened for me. Then I watched the last series, and I thought ‘gosh – this might be it.’ I think you’ve got to believe in yourself and just know that you can do it. It’s amazing what you can do. I don’t know where I pulled it out from, but pressure WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

makes diamonds. My friend said that to me once and I say it a lot. I love it. It’s life. That sums up the show. When you’re put in that position it’s amazing what you can pull out. I’m interested in pursuing more interior design opportunities, collecting things and repurposing unusual objects. I love trawling antique fares and that kind of stuff. I’ve decided that interior design is 99 per cent logistics and one per cent design.

WHAT TURNS A HOUSE INTO A HOME...

YOUR HOME?

From quote to completion Matt did a professional, fantastic and very thorough job on redecorating our bedrooms and study. It was a huge job and required a fair amount of prep due to the state of the rooms. The quote was broken down to make it easy to understand and he communicated with us throughout the job to ensure everything was done to what we needed. He was always punctual, very considerate and courteous, clean and tidy. We have rebooked him for more work.

The answer is, when you have an opportunity to reflect your personality in the décor. If you have just moved into a new house or apartment and are looking to make it yours even starting with just one room, then Matthew James Painting & Decorating would love to help you. I am a fifth-generation painter & decorator, having set up my own company in 2019 in Wokingham. Now my company is not only a growing enterprise, but one which uses eco-friendly water-based paints. I am proud that my company is carbon-neutral, by arranging for thirty trees every month to be planted in projects all over the world. Whether you need internal or external painting, wallpaper on a feature wall or kitchen cabinets refreshed with spray painting, my team and I would love to help. Why not give me a call, today?

FUNCTIONAL. BEAUTIFUL. AFFORDABLE. Last year I finished working on the design of Easthampstead Park Hotel and East Park Gym. I put together the beautiful interiors and managed the design process throughout. It was very involved, with me being responsible from concept to completion, working with the contractors day to day and styling it all myself. I managed everything from budgets to buying and deliveries too. It was a diverse project with a Palm Tree filled Orangery, Cocktail Bar, Grill Restaurant and Luxury Boutique Gym, on top of all the Hotel Bedrooms 34

and Premium Suites! That’s then all surrounded by beautiful grounds with their own resident deer. It’s a special place indeed. It was an incredibly fulfilling project and I love going back to see it finally filled with people once again. Following that success, whilst awaiting the arrival of my little boy, I setup my own business, LR Interiors. Nothing like a bit of motivation to make it a success! He’s now 9 months old and my business is in full swing so I know a thing or two about busy family life! I mostly design interiors WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

I make it affordable and accessible! With my background that was important to me when starting my business. I don’t come from money and so being able to work with people that are so excited to use your service is a lot of fun! So these are the pillars of my designs: Functional. Beautiful. Affordable. Ultimately your home should work for your family. The layout, the storage, the materials used should all be practical and considered. This can be done alongside thoughtful design.

for businesses, with a focus on creating brand centric experiences. But people would often joke with me when they find out what I do. “Oh could you design my house? Haha!” So now YES, yes I can.

A lot of people also think that Interior Design is all about the newest trends. Some trends have their place as they can make you feel something but that’s just the start! I focus on timeless design. Something you’ll love for years to come. I know that Interior Design is considered a “luxury” service but everyone deserves to live in a home that they adore! You can find the design packages on my website or if you’re old-school and want a natter then give me a call! Lauren Roberts - LR Interiors

I realised it’s a service that most people want but think is out of their price range. That Interior Design is some kind of posh illusive thing that’s only available to high earners. I wanted to change that. By having short turnaround design packages WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2022

Easthampstead Park House was built in the 1860s and is nestled in 80 acres of beautiful Berkshire countryside. This stunning Grade II listed Victorian Mansion, full of suave elegance and English charm, is situated upon a centuries old estate that was first documented in the Doomsday Book of 1086, commissioned by none other than William the Conqueror himself. Historically the estate has been utilised as a royal hunting reserve, a local political court, a war refuge and bomb shelter, a female teacher training academy and most recently a Catholic comprehensive school and dedicated conference centre. In late 2018, the property was acquired by boutique hoteliers Active Hospitality, who agreed to purchase the property from Bracknell Forest Council with a promise to regenerate the iconic site and make the property available for local use. Active Hospitality, after spending over £10 Million on the refurbishment works have certainly delivered on their promise, and Easthampstead Park is now the premier event destination in the area and is the perfect Berkshire location to host corporate events, conferences, weddings, and all manner of special events. Residents and visitors to the area are welcome to make a dining or afternoon tea reservation, and to enjoy drinks from the bar. The beautifully

manicured gardens and woodlands that surround the property ensure that the dining spaces here at Easthampstead Park, are totally unique in the Wokingham and Bracknell area. The outstanding membership-based health and fitness facility of East Park Gym, located right next to the Easthampstead Park Mansion House, is no ordinary gym. The dedicated and experienced East Park Gym team have carefully curated the space to create an immersive fitness experience hosting some of the best equipment brands available, professionally coached classes, and an exciting and dynamic gym floor and outdoor workout area. We cordially invite you to check out historic Easthampstead Park today and would love to be considered as a venue to host YOUR next dinner, afternoon tea, drinks with friends or special event of any kind.

McCARTHY STONE GRAND DESIGNS Jacqui Priestley talks to Sara Jacks, Head of Interior Design at McCarthy Stone What is the individual design style for McCarthy Stone, or do you follow the latest trends? As a design team, we don’t tend to rely on fast-moving seasonal trends, especially with our communal areas, we design with the customer in mind - spaces that are flexible, stylish, comfortable, and designed to last. Trends that are here to stay and have been re-imagined year after year, are where we take inspiration from for our set design schemes. There are certainly aspects of latest trends that we feel comfortable implementing in our interior design projects, and of course our customers are free to take inspiration from wherever they like; and will have existing likes and dislikes when it comes to putting their own stamp on their apartment as you would expect. Our current designs for the communal spaces are built around three main themes… Coastal: think calm, airy, a breathable space full of cool-toned fabrics WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

and natural textured furniture. Contemporary: a sophisticated scheme, with statement furniture and accessories, geometric patterns, mixed with bronze and antique brass accents. And Country: a vibrant mix of fun and colourful florals, botanical prints, and deep pile velvet upholstery. When it comes to the homeowners’ individual properties, a McCarthy Stone apartment is like a blank canvas. Each comes with a modern, fitted kitchen and bathroom and open plan layout, normally with built-in appliances, and some with a balcony; but the space can be made as truly unique as the homeowner that lives there. I have heard the phrase ‘’stylish design meets easy living’’ in connection with your homes, what does this mean? I think we all find comfort in simple pleasures; as a design team we create environments that are low 41

maintenance yet sophisticated, with furnishings that are consistent in quality for our homeowners to enjoy at their leisure. Our main aim is to give our homeowners that optionality and encourage them to use the communal space as much or as little as they would like but most importantly, in their own way. Creating quiet corners to relax with a book, or read the paper, lounge areas to catch up with a friend or flexible space for movie nights, light exercise classes or dancing. A new McCarthy Stone development has had planning approved on Reading Road in Wokingham. Will these homes have a particular ‘grand design’? Reflective of the vibrant market town, when thinking about the communal areas for this scheme an interior style will be selected that is most appropriate for the Wokingham area. Future designs are evolving to include modern joinery solutions, ambient lighting and botanical design features, so watch this space! You can follow its progress at www.mccarthyandstone.co.uk/wokingham 42

What are the latest interior trends for the Over 65’s, and are retirees these days looking for a more modern and vibrant lifestyle? We recently surveyed over 65s on their interior design tastes and, as many of us know, there is a huge misconception about how this generation decorates their homes. Today’s retirees want top spec home security systems (a must for 50 percent), electric vehicle charging points (44 percent), Alexa (41 percent) and hive heating (29 percent). They also want walk-in wardrobes (54 percent), wet rooms (53 percent), kitchen islands (48 percent), wine fridges (35 percent) and modern art on the walls (19 percent). What we have learned from our homeowners is that moving to a McCarthy Stone property offers them a blank canvas to inject their personality, focus on their needs, their individual style and how they want to live. Many achieve their interior style within their apartments by incorporating key pieces to combine different styles from different eras to create a contemporary classic home. Our advice would be to use paired back functional pieces, like a modern media unit or dining table, combined with a timeless antique WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

display unit or console table, and then adding a splash of colour in artwork or accessories, this can make a space feel more layered and homely. How do homeowners manage to reflect their own characters, and where can they find inspiring home interior design ideas? Travel, history, magazines, online, homeware shopping. For me it’s about gaining the experiences, not just what things look like but how they feel, smell, sound. Our homeowners’ homes are enriched with their own experiences and collections of personal possessions. When updating or re-imagining a space, it can be quite a heavy and daunting process with limitless interior styling options. Temptation is always in our way with new products and new trends, but a home doesn’t need to be magazine picture-perfect. I’d say be inspired but stay true to your values and what is important to you. What is your best tip you would give to someone looking for interior design inspiration? It’s better to fill your home with things you love. Start with items you already have and really love – what is it you love about the item? Is it the colour, pattern, texture? Sometimes it’s about re-imagining 44

the space you already have and layering the space to find a balance between old and new. Artwork and gallery walls are a great place to start and a great way to inject personality into any room. They needn’t be expensive or precious, but personal to you and your taste. There are home styling events planned for later this year, including one at Loddon house in Twyford, what does this entail, and will there be future events? We will be hosting a series of interior events at 12 developments across the country to talk about our experience designing interiors for McCarthy Stone, some top room styling advice and an overview of the current services we offer. The aim is for a hands-on afternoon, aimed at retirees who love interior design but would love to have more confidence with colour, pairing patterns, fabrics, and furniture. With an hour-long mood-boarding workshop, it’s a great opportunity to meet likeminded people, and for us to really help current and prospective homeowners find what is their personal interior style. HOLME GRANGE STUDENTS WILL BE THE NEXT GENERATION OF CHANGE MAKERS. As a Sustainability and Climate Change Centre for Excellence, Holme Grange School aims to produce global citizens and informed consumers. Students are empowered to lead the changes needed to create a resilient and inclusive community. We have the first certified carbon literacy teachers in the world and we are the first eduCCate Global Gold Standard school. We don’t just pay lip service to sustainability; it’s embedded throughout the curriculum whether that be in our Nursery or in the senior years to give children the knowledge and understanding they need and want. “Eco-councils” across each section of the school (including staff and parents) meet weekly to work on smaller scale initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals as their guide. Pupils work towards gaining Sustainability Badges in Prep School. In November 2021 the whole school took part in “Mock COP”. 60 student delegates filled our hall in a UN style conference discussing progress since the Paris agreement and the work that still needs to be done. Other pupils completed a range of activities including clearing a fake oil spill, designing and building a flood-proof model house, planting crocus bulbs, creating non-for-profit businesses and discussing gender equality. Roving reporters and journalists captured the mood. We 46

even had a conference artist who sketched the plenary session. In collaboration with Wokingham council and other schools in the borough, we want sustainability to be an essential part of every school’s syllabus and not an optional extra. Our ultimate aim is for the creation of a Sustainability GCSE. Our bespoke Climate Bravery course in Year 9 is blazing a trail towards that goal with the University of Oxford on board for a future research project. As a result, Holme Grange students will be the next generation of change makers.

You don’t seem to hear very much about Quaker schools but then grandiose self-promotion isn’t very Quakerly. A little research reveals some interesting facts. The Obama family sent their daughters to a Quaker school in the US and Sixth Form leavers at UK Quaker schools achieve some of the best academic progress in the country (the measure that UK Government uses to assess schools), with two in the top 0.5% in England. Quaker schools in the UK are open to students of all faiths and none, with the emphasis being on the Quaker values rather than religion. Academic success has to be important in any school, but as Matthew Judd, Head at Leighton Park, identifies, there is more than one way of achieving this: “A student’s academic development cannot be understood in isolation but must be considered in conjunction with their emotional and physical wellbeing, confidence, maturity and happiness.”

Toby Spence, Head at Sibford School, adds:

“Quaker Schools offer a unique pathway... The distinct blend of values encompassing peace, equality, tolerance, social justice, simplicity and stewardship help to frame a community where the individual is known and valued, indeed celebrated for who they are rather than which box society might like to place them in.” Quaker schools seem to imbue gentle, civilised values - where students can develop and grow in a kind and supportive environment - with inspiration to encourage them to play an active role - or ‘Live Adventurously’ as Quakers would term it, all while achieving some of the best academic progress in the country. With Quaker schools not predisposed to shouting about themselves too much, one is left with the distinct feeling that these schools are something of a hidden gem.

Why not visit Leighton Park School and see for yourself how a Quaker education could benefit your child?

YOGA AT WORK? I am seeing a real increase with interest for yoga, as the country returns to a sense of normality and we slowly return to offices, albeit on an infrequent basis, more people are engaging, either online or attending local yoga classes, or even Park Yoga Wokingham.

Working from home, ‘hybrid working’, is the new norm. It benefits employees, and certainly benefits employers, for many reasons. So now is the time for businesses to review their health, safety and wellbeing initiatives, possibly embrace a more holistic approach to their employee wellbeing, perhaps include yoga. Yoga is a mind and body practice, that is well known. When we work, we probably carry a degree of stress, simply to problem solve and get 48

through the day. We probably breathe at only 15% lung capacity whilst going about our stuff and we probably are sedentary for 70%+ of the working day. We are perpetually in our ‘fight and flight’ mode which is not sustainable and risking our health. Our employers, and if you are one, have a duty of care for our wellbeing, which goes beyond some of the diluted approaches I have seen throughout my work life. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

• A simple yoga class, whether online or in person, will gently stress the physical form, and in doing so, teach us how to breathe to reduce the stress and calm the nervous system and the mind. Repeating this through each posture, and sequence, develops our nervous system to react automatically to stress when we are off the mat and going about our work. • We learn good breathing, practicing techniques that open our dormant lung capacity, building strength and flexibility around the intercostal muscles and diaphragm, so we breath naturally, more efficiently, slowing the regular heart rate. We learn to recognise when we are not breathing effectively. • Attempting some of the key postures that we use in yoga will teach us about our bodies, our constraints, where we need to focus our attention to recover good posture that we may have mislaid along the way through sitting at a computer, all day.

Yoga is unique in that is a physical form of training with the intention of using the breath to achieve mindful physical movement. This awareness of the breath will permit a deeper understanding of ourselves and enable us to steady our minds. The breath is the bridge between body and mind, smooth the breath, calm the mind. This doesn’t mean that after such a short (30-40 min) class, we are all so chilled out we cannot function, far from it. When we end a yoga class, we feel invigorated, we have space to think logically and we are much calmer, exactly what our employers would want, and great for our wellbeing. If there is space in the office, then why not run a class, or even outside if there is space? I commend those businesses that have already adopted a holistic approach and embraced yoga, how is it with your workplace? www.richardsyoga.org Facebook - richard’s yoga

THE TIME HAS COME TO DO MORE Many of us are encouraged to do things to actively improve our physical health but how many of us take a similar proactive approach to improving our mental health? Sadly, mental health problems are all too common in the workplace, and it is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK - with a staggering 70 million work days lost each year. And according to a report published by Mental Health Foundation and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), this costs the UK economy at least £118 billion annually - around 5 percent of the UK’s GDP. Clearly the cost of mental ill-health is not simply a financial issue, but calculating the cost and impact of mental health problems can be very persuasive when making the case for investment in preventing them. We have become much more aware of what mental health is and the impact it has on our lives no more so than through the global pandemic where employers really started to witness the impact physical distancing, social isolation, and lockdown was having on individuals. But being more aware and talking about mental health is just the start. We have to become a nation 50

that takes a much more proactive approach towards protecting our wellbeing, and that of those around us - be it at home or in the workplace. Here are five steps to consider, and think about how you might build into your everyday life. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

1. Connect with others Build strong, wider social connections and relationships to help you feel happier, more secure, and give a greater sense of purpose.

5. Be mindful Pay regular attention to the present moment - to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you.

2. Be active We tend to think that the mind and body are separate. But what you do with your body can have a powerful effect on your mental wellbeing.

These are just five steps to help improve and maintain your mental health and wellbeing - there are many more tools and resources available. Surely the time has come to do more than just raise awareness of mental health in the workplace.

3. Keep learning Learning can boost your self-confidence and selfesteem, whilst helping to build a sense of purpose and a way to connect with others.

Neil Stead www.steadyconsulting.co.uk 07375 482637

4. Give to others Make small acts of kindness towards other people, or larger ones - such as volunteering in your local community. They can give you a sense of purpose, make you feel happier and more satisfied with life.

SUMPTUOUS SUMMER BBQ

Halloumi & Pineapple Burger Ingredients

Method

• ½ red cabbage, grated • 2 carrots, grated • 100g radishes, sliced • 1 small pack coriander, chopped • 2 limes, juiced • 1 tbsp cold-pressed rapeseed oil • big pinch of chilli flakes • 1 tbsp chipotle paste • 60g halloumi, cut into 4 slices • 2 small slices of fresh pineapple • 1 Little Gem lettuce, divided into 4 lettuce cups, or 2 small seeded burger buns, cut in half, to serve.

Heat the barbecue. Put the cabbage, carrot, radish and coriander in a bowl. Pour over the lime juice, add ½ tbsp oil and the chilli flakes, then season with salt and pepper. Give everything a good mix with your hands. This can be done a few hours before and kept in the fridge.

56

Mix the remaining oil with the chipotle paste then coat the halloumi slices in the mixture. Put the halloumi slices on a sheet of foil and put on the barbecue with the pineapple (or use a searing hot griddle pan if cooking inside). Cook for 2 mins on each side until the cheese is golden, and the pineapple is beginning to caramelise. Brush the buns with the remaining chipotle oil, then put your burger buns, if using, cut-side down, on the barbecue for the last 30 seconds of cooking to toast. Assemble your burgers with the lettuce or buns. Start with a handful of the slaw, then add halloumi and pineapple. Serve with the remaining slaw.

La Tomatina Festival happens annually during the last wednesday of August. It takes place in Buñol, a little village near Valencia, Spain, which has a population of just under 10,000 people. It is located 40 km from Valencia by bus, train or car. The story goes, that in 1945 some young boys decided to get a place among the retinue of a parade during the town festivities. The energy of these teens meant that one participant fell down. The participant got mad and started to hit everything in his way. Casually nearby there was a vegetable stall that fell victim of the furious crowd, and people started to pelt each other with tomatoes, until local forces intervened and ended the vegetable battle. The following year, the young people picked a quarel and started the food fight again, bringing their own tomatoes from home. Although the police broke up the early tradition, the boys had made history without being conscious of it, and it became an annual event. In the early 50’s La Tomatina was banned , by Francisco Franco due to the festival’s lack of religious importance, but the people rebelled and it was again allowed, when in 1957, as a sign of protest, the tomato burial was held. It was a demonstration in which the residents carried a coffin with a huge tomato inside. 60

The parade was accompanied by a music band which played funeral marches and it was totally successful. La Tomatina Festival was finally allowed and became an official festivity. Since then, the number of participants increased year after year as well as the excitement about La Tomatina Festival. In 2002, La Tomatina of Buñol was declared Festivity of International Tourist Interest by the Secretary Deparment of Tourism due to its success, WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022

and became well known throughout Spain. This year, there are 30,000 participants expected, bringing people from all over the World together with locals in Buñol. You may ask is La Tomatina a waste of food? But people in Valencia say the tomatoes used for La Tomatina are no good for anything else. Not only are they about to start rotting, but these particular tomatoes, bought extremely cheaply from the Extremadura region of Spain are of such low quality that they were pretty much inedible to start with. And who cleans after La Tomatina? Well, tomatoes are apparently a natural disinfectant, meaning that after La Tomatina your skin will be cleansed of impurities. The town is also left surprisingly clean, with firefighters hosing down the streets , and people after the battle. On the 31st of August, La Tomatina Festival begins at 12am with a bang. Trucks loaded with tomatoes proceed to drive through the fight area while some locals in the back of the trucks are throwing tomatoes at the festival goers. As soon as the truck passes, everyone dives on the ground scooping for tomatoes to get themselves armed for the battle… that’s when the fun begins! The following hour will be one of the most intense and hilarious experiences of your life. Highlights of Buñol Bunol lies 40 kilometres inland from the city of Valencia situated on the Buñol river, surrounded by mountain ranges and agriculture. Archaeological evidence that suggests there has been civilisation in Bunol going back 50,000 years. The town is also home to the Castle of Bunol, which is a fascinating historical site in its own right. The small town is a working town of approximately 9,000 residents, involved in industry and agriculture; producing carob, almonds, citrus fruits, olives, grapes and tomatoes. Aside from the town and castle, the beautiful mountain ranges and landscape that surround Bunol make it especially worth a visit. If you can make it during August for the Tomatina Festival, then you can expect a unique experience never to be forgotten! WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY / AUGUST 2022
