Paving the way for home ownership

The four keys to selling value

Capacity modelling

Helping more young New Zealand families into their own home is a priority for National. That’s why we have a comprehensive housing plan to improve housing supply and affordability.

Top salespeople use four unique steps to create value-selling opportunities and quantify benefits and solutions.

When pondering what to offer a viewpoint on, I was drawn (back) to capacity modelling.

The key to improving affordability is to build more houses, and build them faster - and we’re focused on doing that. We’re also supporting more first home buyers through our HomeStart scheme. Anyone considering buying their first home needs to know about important changes to our HomeStart scheme; this scheme provides government grants to low and middle income New Zealanders of up to $20,000 per couple, within certain income and house price limits. From August 1 this year, we increased the house price limits and income thresholds so more people can access these grants. Auckland house price limits are now $600,000 for an existing home and $650,000 for a new-build home. People can now access the scheme if they earn below $85,000 a year as an individual, or $130,000 as a couple. These changes will help more first home buyers in Auckland and around the country get a foot on the property ladder. According to independent data, around 30 percent of all house sales in Auckland during the first three months of 2016 were below the new Auckland HomeStart house price limit of $600,000. We’re also seeing progress on the largest urban redevelopment ever undertaken in New Zealand – the Tamaki redevelopment. The 2,800 state-owned houses in the area are being redeveloped to deliver 7,500 new homes – which will be a mix of social, affordable and privately owned homes. On the other side of the city, former Defence Force land has been developed by the Hobsonville Land Company, a Housing New Zealand subsidiary. There’s a range of homes being built at Hobsonville Point to suit different Auckland families and at least 20 percent of them will be affordable – if not more. These developments sit alongside other measures in the Government’s plan to speed up housing development in Auckland. We’ve created 154 special housing areas in Auckland to speed up the zoning and consenting process, and these areas have a potential yield of about 62,000 dwellings. We’re reforming the Resource Management Act to make it easier to get houses consented and built, and we’re freeing up surplus Crown land for development. We’re also setting up a $1 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund to ensure the roads, water and other infrastructure required for new housing can get built. By any definition, the Government has a comprehensive housing plan to address supply and affordability and we’re committed to continuing to build on this momentum in Auckland.

Yes I have written on this before, but this is a constant nagging issue we are striking with clients day in and day out currently… hence I felt I had to offer a further deliberation on it.

While customers love quality, benefits and service, they need bottom-line dollars to justify recommendations, compare offerings, benefits, and to find reduced costs or increased productivity.

So the age old question is: do you get the work and then acquire the staff… or get the staff and then chase the work?

Salespeople who refer to “quantified value” use the same language that customers understand and therefore succeed more often. Quantified benefits enhance selling, handling objections, negotiating, and enable differentiation.

It’s not a 'one-size fits all' unfortunately and will depend on the product or service you sell, the style of delivery and your levels of service. Nonetheless, the fundamental rule of thumb is that nothing sucks cash from a business like unprecedented growth. Also, heavy growth can distort and clutter quality of service delivery.

Here are the four steps that consultative salespeople use to effectively sell value.

If your business claims service delivery is paramount and a point of difference, then clearly you need to get the staff before the work (or figure out a method to get the work done on contract or sub-contract), so that your service levels, and therefore brand, are not diminished.

1. Search and discover the value opportunity Finding the customer value may be the biggest challenge. Few salespeople do it automatically and must be trained to search, find and assess the value. In short, they must determine what the specific customer benefits/applications are and how their benefits can generate value.

A big challenge around capacity modelling is knowing what you are going to produce, going to sell, when and how and why. Yes, many more questions than answers and very often you simply don’t know the answers - but educated guesses have to be made.

IMPACT indicators help identify generic, broad areas where savings and efficiency can be generated. In simple terms, IMPACT indicators tell the salesperson where to look for concrete data that will improve the customer’s operation. They are: Inventory, Money, People, Assets, Capability and Time.

Educated ‘what if’ analysis and educated stabs in the dark even. Remarkably, more often than not with the right guidance and questions, you get it more right than wrong.

2. Use IMPACT indicators to analyse the value It is essential to find a value on indicators to make the benefits specific, measurable, and memorable for the customer, and to aid in quantifying the indicators. A simple example: If your product or process can save 10 minutes per day per worker, this needs to be extrapolated over the number of workers, and converted to dollars for full impact.

It all starts with big picture planning. How big do you want to be? How busy do you want to be? Some early yardage numbers need sorting. Average transaction value, average transaction frequency, margin analysis (how much do you make on each transaction) – then it becomes a game of just pure mathematics. The wonderful thing about this is you are in control of the mathematics; you can be as big or small, as busy, as profitable as you want to be.

The six IMPACT indicators are values that work together to help measure/predict the impact or results of the benefits your company can provide. This is a creative process and requires thought, time, and logic.

It sounds so very easy and it can be, but if you need a hand then get hold of a cost and management accountant and thrash out the ‘ifs, buts and maybes’.

3. Optimise the value It is important to project the values over a longer period of time. Obviously, if a benefit has a life cycle of six months, or is a one-time enhancement, you are limited. However, if you provide an ongoing benefit to the customer, you have earned the right to value it over a longer period of time.

There are loads of templates in Excel online, or there are fantastic bits of forecasting software so you can start working your numbers if you want to do most of the work yourself. If you are reading this and just don’t know where to go first – then ring us – no obligation, no pressure.

4. Present the value solution The salesperson has to support his or her presentation with collected customer data and a worksheet showing how the conclusion has been reached. This adds credibility to the forecast or prediction of performance improvements. While it is not a guarantee of results, it enables the customer to understand your rationale, explore the possibilities and even add or negotiate the process.

Updating archaic legal fees

A little generosity goes a long way

Create or innovate?

There is a growing pressure on lawyers worldwide to ditch the archaic practice of charging clients by six minute units and convert to upfront fixed pricing.

Of all that I’ve learned over the years in providing services to property and facilities owners, one thing stands out. And that is to work from a generosity of spirit.

The power of flight is still something that I am in awe of; even after hundreds of flights around the globe I still see aviation as one of the greatest achievements of our lifetime. An interesting question I was recently asked was “do I see flight as creativity or innovation?”

British legal costs expert, Jim Diamond said in a recent post in the Centre for Policy Studies that “Steps should be taken to ensure fair practice in legal procedure. The ‘billable hour’ is an outdated and unsustainable billing method for legal services to continue. Alternative billing methods must be considered and legal procedure must be simplified to ensure that the legal market place thrives in the long term, and the price of law is not punitive.” Lord Justice Jackson, a senior British judge, has proposed a move to fixed fee basis for all litigation work, suggesting that fees are capped. He is reported as saying “Remuneration on a time basis rewards inefficiency. Unrestrained costs drive parties to leave no stone unturned: the more costs mount up, the more determined each party becomes to ensure that the other party pays them. The result is inevitable – a civil justice system which is exorbitantly expensive.” If you think about it, charging six minutes for having sent a short email or leaving a 30 second message does not sound right. Time based billing places most of the commercial risk on the client’s shoulders. There is regular commentary in the UK, United States and Canada that the market now expects greater transparency on fees and that fixed price billing is the economic tool that will allow consumers of legal services to compare and benchmark the cost of legal services. So what of the New Zealand market? It is fair to say that the traditionalist lawyers are resistant to upfront fixed pricing. They will tell you that it is sometimes impossible to predict how long a task may take. Incidentally, this view would clearly not wash with Lord Justice Jackson. However, there are other lawyers in New Zealand who take the view that if you promote yourself as having the necessary legal expertise and experience, then providing an upfront fixed price, with the ability to review for contingencies, should go without saying. There is also an issue of affordable access to justice. A number of lawyers are also concerned that more and more SMEs are muddling through legal issues themselves, because accessing quality legal services has become too expensive. But, like a lot of things, market change will only occur with pressure from consumers and the increasing presence of more transparent, streamlined and cost effective alternatives. A number of these alternatives are operating from a cloud basis.

That means offering your knowledge, time, credit, power, information and faith. An efficiency expert might say time spent doing this could be spent more productively. But mean-spirited efficiency sends the message, “I’m not that interested in you”. Ekaterina Walter, an occasional contributor for Forbes, is often asked how she achieved success and recognition. Her answer: generosity. It’s about being willing to give a piece of yourself, or offering an invaluable gift of your time and expertise, or extending your network to others. It’s about making someone else successful first. It’s about connecting people who share passions and aspirations. All without expecting something back. A lot of companies dismiss this simple, but invaluable insight. Strange really, since this golden rule of business has proven itself over and over again. The opposite is a mindset of scarcity or coolness, where every dollar has to be counted and guarded and warmth given out sparingly. A scarcity mindset also risks condescension and other modes of disrespect. Generosity may increase some costs a bit, and use more of your time, but if people become loyal to you, and/or refer others to you, you’ll have built a virtuous cycle. Another way generosity operates is putting the happiness of clients first. This means everyone in your business knows that when deciding the right thing to do, having a happy client is the key consideration. A computer business complained about users contacting the company only to “moan about a fault and then expect us to solve it immediately” and complaining about the expectations of the board. It was suggested the business should look at the language it was using. Rather than referring to “the business”, “the board” and “end-users”, it should see “clients” or “customers”. “You should be working together - not staring at each other with a mutual lack of sympathy,” said their advisor.

If creativity is doing the same thing you’ve always done in a slightly new way, and innovation is doing something you didn’t know existed yesterday, then I would have to say creativity led Orville and Wilbur Wright to inventing, building and flying the world’s first successful aeroplane. The innovation of flight came well before 1903: people jumping off towers with bird-like wings strapped to their backs in the hope of staying off the ground, kites and hot air balloons. All this demonstrated to the Wright brothers that something could defy gravity and fly. So, is innovation a word of our generation and as business leaders should we be challenging ourselves and our staff to be more creative? Every organisation could gain immediate traction by making small improvements to the things they already do well. Just take a look at our Olympic athletes; they strive to gain a one percent increase which can be the difference between winning and not placing at all. Most people are more creative than they give themselves credit for and given the time and opportunity to share ideas and insights, they often flourish. When someone is passionate and knowledgeable about a task or topic, they see new opportunities or a fresh way of doing something. There is huge potential for us all to explore the “why didn’t we think of that before” moment in our working day. Many of us will underestimate an idea, believing that it’s too simple to be important. In my view creativity in our organisations will be the difference between jumping off a building with wings strapped to our backs and travelling from London to New York on an Airbus A380. Encouraging your team to think differently and building creativity in the workplace is easier than you think and can be achieved in a number of ways: • Giving people time to explore their simple daily tasks

If a client is upset, a generous mindset will help you handle the emotion without getting tangled in it.

• Constantly questioning yourself and your work practices

We Kiwis have a tendency to get defensive if someone is upset, or just to dodge the issue. But if you talk to an upset or cross client the right way, with respect and truly addressing the heart of the problem, she or he may well become your best advocate.

• Acknowledging that not every idea will work

Executive Education

• Encouraging group thinking • Investing in education. Creativity costs far less than innovation, it doesn’t always demand an increase in capability or resources and it builds great culture. You don’t need to be the next Wright brothers to turn something simple into something amazing.

Dealing with workplace manipulation

Shedding some light on tired eyes

Conflict at work will occur from time to time. But if there is an ongoing conflict with one person, and when you walk away from every interaction feeling like you have been manipulated, it is highly likely you are being manipulated.

Having enough light to be able to do day to day activities is something we take for granted.

Many years ago, I became a target for a manipulator who worked for me. Over a long period of time I often felt sick, angry and constantly frustrated, simply because I was not aware that I was being manipulated.

Today, with electric lighting available at our fingertips, you might think we’d be in a better position. However, as we spend more time using computers, our eyes are under huge demands.

Although I am an independent, strong and intelligent person, I lacked personal boundaries. As a result, I allowed this person to make decisions and make changes - basically doing what she wanted.

Having enough light is vital for maintaining good eye health. This means having enough light going onto your computer screen and paperwork, but also avoiding glare. If there’s a window behind your screen your desk may appear to be welllit, but without enough light above your screen, your eyes may be automatically adjusting to shut out the excess light behind and on your desk surface.

I did this because I thought that she was a great worker and motivated to grow the business. The truth was that this person was intimidated by anyone who was smart or assertive. The goal of a manipulator is to control and influence the behaviours and action of others. Because it’s about control, manipulation is prevalent in the workplace, which usually has a hierarchical structure. To control others, manipulators can abuse their positions, authority, or responsibilities, while not overstepping accepted boundaries in the workplace. The control gestures manipulators use include emotional blackmail, dishonest yet persuasive language, discrediting others around them, deflecting the issue at hand when confronted, concealed threats, and lies or distortion of the facts. What’s interesting is most manipulators don’t realise they are doing this because their behaviour is fed by their own insecurities, or a view of life as a series of battles So how do you deal with manipulation when it’s your staff or co-worker? People do what they do because they can, so firstly, it’s important to define your limits and set boundaries by being assertive. As masters of the emotional game, manipulators will use any emotional reaction on your part as evidence that you are the abuser. So it’s very important that you always deal with the behaviour, not the person - this will ensure you disengage emotionally and think rationally – unemotional assertiveness is an attitude a manipulator cannot match.

It’s remarkable to think that less than 200 years ago, prior to electric lighting, our days were predominantly controlled by the hours of daylight available.

This means without you being aware of it, you might be struggling to read what’s on the screen in front of you. Likewise, if there’s a window behind you, there may be too much light hitting your screen. Incorrect lighting on screens is also shown to have a direct correlation with shoulder/neck muscle tension, as we poke our heads towards the screen, trying to make it easier to read the content. The ever-increasing amount of time we spend looking at our screens is another challenge. Reading from a printed document gives us a chance to physically move the paperwork around to change focal distance; not so easily done with a screen. Modern glass office blocks with large windows can also make it challenging to control light effectively. So what to do? Ideally, have a ceiling light directly above the workstation user, so that there is sufficient light on the screen but no glare. Alternatively, position a desk light over the top of the screen or screens. Use blinds to control amount of light coming in. Ideally, position screens at 90 degrees to the window to avoid bright sun behind or light coming onto the screen.

Dealing effectively with manipulation is, at its core, about thinking differently, which is very easy on a rational level, but daunting on an emotional level.

Be conscious of the colours you use in a work area. Lots of bright white walls and desk tops will reflect more light and can cause glare and tired eyes. If using white on your walls, break this whiteness up with some large pictures or plants.

When you want to avoid hiring a manipulator in the first place, the first difficulty is spotting it when someone is in front of you for half an hour. I would suggest allowing the candidate to start working while monitoring their trial period very closely for negative behaviour. Another idea is to also get feedback from other staff.

And remember to give your eyes regular breaks by looking into the distance. If you don’t have a window, put up a large image as not only is it good for the eyes, it’s good for the brain, and helps shed a little light on your overall perspective.

Workplace special | Creating equality

Equal opportunities

The benefits of hiring staff with disabilities By Laura Baker

Workplace diversity is having a higher importance placed on it as awareness about the importance and benefits of it grow. This shift is extremely encouraging, in particular for people in New Zealand who have a disability. Adults with disabilities have struggled against employment inequality, but it is high time for employers to realise the benefits and embrace these valuable members of our society. According to Statistics New Zealand, almost two-thirds of disabled adults under 65 are employed, and most of the remainder would like to have a job. The survey found that 39 percent of disabled people aged 15 to 64 weren’t working in paid jobs in 2013. While 74 percent of those who weren’t employed said they would like to work if a job was available. That is a sizeable pool of potential employees who are capable and eager to work, which is worthwhile considering. Unfortunately the report shows that many disabled people face difficulties in looking for jobs and tend to fare worse and are less likely to be successful when applying for a job than their nondisabled counterparts. Interestingly, relatively few disabled workers need special modifications or equipment in their workplace.

Those who are employed work in a wide range of occupations and industries throughout the country. More than a third work in either managerial or professional jobs, while many work in physically demanding occupations such as labouring or trade jobs. Hiring a capable or qualified person with a disability brings greater benefits beyond just filling an open job; there’s a solid business case too. The benefits of hiring people with disabilities are: Long term commitment Those with a disability are less likely to seek new employment as regularly as their job hunting colleagues. In general they are more grateful for their position and are likely to be committed long term to their employer. Exceptional abilities

Drive to succeed These employees are often dedicated to their work and have a strong desire to improve, exceed the performance of their peers and take on more responsibility. This in turn increases their company’s profitability. Resourceful People with disabilities can face numerous challenges in daily life. This means they are often great problem solvers and are skilled at thinking creatively. Greater camaraderie They often inspire their colleagues and have a positive effect on the entire workforce. Continual improvement

Rather than focusing on the disability, look beyond that and see the ability. This exceptional group of people may be limited in some areas, but they often excel with highly developed skills in others.

Their performance at work steadily improves over time. Even workers with more profound disabilities can make great improvements.

They’re reliable

Happy to work

In general this group take less sick days than the general population. They are also known to be punctual, arriving for work and returning from breaks on time.

Employees with a disability are found to be extremely satisfied with their jobs. They love their work and will go the extra mile for the company.

Glass ceilings Tackling gender bias at your place By Laura Baker

As a nation we proudly boast that we were the first country to give woman the vote in national elections. We are also one of the few countries in the world to have had two female heads of government, and one of only two countries to have had a female head of government directly succeed another, the other country being Sri Lanka. The government enacted the Equal Pay Act 1972 to address direct and indirect discrimination in wage rates. It required equal pay for women and men in the same job. On the surface New Zealand does a good job at appearing to have equal opportunities in the business world for women and men. But despite these progressive measures we’ve made towards gender equality, an unconscious gender bias impedes woman at every step of the employment ladder, from job application success to earning the big bucks at the top. The New Zealand Ministry for Women has recorded the gender pay gap since 1998. The gender pay gap compares the median hourly earnings of women and men in full and part-time work. In 2015 it found that men earned 11.8 percent more than woman in the same role, that’s up from 9.1 percent in 2012.

CHANGE YOUR JOB CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

A Credit Suisse research report on women in senior management, released in 2014, found that women are still poorly represented in New Zealand boardrooms. According to the report, the percentage of women on boards in New Zealand was 19.6 percent in 2011, rising to 21.3 percent in 2012, but this figure had since fallen back to 19.6 percent in 2013. While a NZX Gender Diversity Statistics report in the same year showed that male directors out numbered females by 88 percent to 12 percent across the 109 participating companies surveyed. Businesses might like to believe that they make fair evaluations based on employees’ qualifications and quality alone, but the research suggests otherwise. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, gender bias is still alive and well in our country. So how can you make sure that your unconscious bias is kept at bay? Try implementing some of the following measures: Assign roles based on ability Society holds deeply rooted stereotypes that women are better suited to support, administration and communication based roles, whilst men perform better in leadership positions. It is these stereotypes that form the basis of gender discrimination at work. The allocation of work should be organised purely on the basis of employee’s abilities and not their gender or presumed skills.

Name-blind applications You could try hiring staff without knowing the sex of the applicants you’re evaluating. It’s called name-blind applications, where names are removed from CV’s. If you don’t know whether the applicants are women or men then your bias shouldn’t be triggered. Equal pay Equal work should receive equal pay, but unfortunately in New Zealand it does not. Be the change and actively establish a policy in your business that guarantees both your male and female staff are paid equally for the same role. Talk about it Make gender bias a point of discussion amongst senior staff and provide training on how to identify and erase it. Increasing the awareness of unconscious bias can go some way to influencing the outcome of decision around hiring and promotions. Over time it can contribute to a long term perception adjustment and equality in the workplace. Familiarise yourself with anti-discrimination laws As an employer you should have a thorough understanding of the laws in place to prevent discrimination in the workplace, for example equal pay, harassment, victimisation and direct discrimination based on sex.

Workplace special | Getting along

Minding your manners How to be a better colleague By Lydia Truesdale

Every office has one: the colleague you expediently time your lunch and coffee breaks to avoid.

not smiling at all deems you somewhat unapproachable and is a guaranteed way to make people avoid (and quite possibly dislike) you.

Yep, who we work with can make all the difference between looking forward to stepping into the office and counting down the minutes until we leave. But what exactly is it about colleagues that make them more enjoyable, or less tolerable? And how can we make sure we ourselves are being the best colleague we can be? Aside from the obvious etiquette – be ethical, be polite, be punctual, be honest, be respectful, avoid gossip – there are some behaviours that you can keep in check to ensure you aren’t becoming that colleague. Be cheery – but not too cheery The axiom “a smile is infectious, you catch it like the flu” is no myth. A passing smile and a cheery salutation is an effortless way to put colleagues into good moods and show them that you: a) recognise their existence and, b) are happy to make time for them. There is a line though – being too bubbly, especially when it means failing to notice that someone is having a bad day, can be interpreted as annoying and/or ignorant. On the other hand,

Master small talk Whether at the water cooler, in the break room or at your desk, intervals of small talk break up the day and make colleagues feel more comfortable around one other. Small talk is not the time to dribble on about your personal problems outside the office, however. Keep topics light and non-invasive – think music, movies, travel, exercise, pets, hobbies, cuisine, weekend plans etc. Listen and learn Small gestures can have big impact. Simply listening is validation that you respect your colleagues’ opinions. Listening also indicates that you have an empathetic ear that can be of great support should anyone need it. Try to keep the ‘hear and be heard’ balance even (that is doing as much listening as you do speaking). Compliment others – and give credit where credit’s due Whether it’s their latest project or something they’re wearing, there are many ways to compliment a colleague – and as long as it’s sincere it will be appreciated. Be sure to not overdo it or

you’ll risk being seen as a greaser whose compliments aren’t genuine, rather agenda setting. Be ethical and diplomatic You can’t be completely sure of what your colleagues’ opinions are on every single matter, so be tactful when voicing yours. For all you know they might have a relative, friend or partner that is subject to whatever you’re discussing and your opinion on the matter could be causing offence or stress, not to mention creating an air of awkwardness. An easy way to check yourself before you wreck yourself is to imagine you are talking to your boss or parent in law, or the likes. Avoid gossip As tempting as it is, and as easy as it can be to fall into, conversations regarding gossip, negative or facetious opinions of others are dangerous territory and should undoubtedly be avoided, or stopped in their tracks when they surface. Whether you were being serious or not, your conversation is likely to make its way back to the person it concerned. Show restraint This one’s wide reaching. Whether it’s the amount of cologne you spray each morning or the decision to not divulge every detail about the horrible thing that just happened to you, showing restraint is synonymous with showing respect.

The weakest link How to spot a workplace bully By Laura Baker

Bullies aren’t just nasty children in the school playground. The reality is people can be bullied at any age in any environment.

Identifying a bully Anyone can be a bully at work whether it’s a boss, a co-worker or a client. If you’re a victim it’s important to recognise your situation and act. Signs you are being bullied include: • Being belittled and extensively micromanaged

And it’s not as uncommon as you’d think. It has been reported that a 1,700-person academic survey revealed New Zealand to have the second-worst rate of workplace bullying in the developed world, with one in five workers afflicted.

• Having unwanted gossip and rumours about you spread

Indentifying workplace bullies isn’t always easy as it can often be subtle and devious, such as efforts to undermine credibility, performance or confidence. Personal attacks and put downs are also common methods of bullying that are more easily recognised. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment define workplace bullying as “repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety”. It affects people physically and mentally, resulting in increased stress levels, decreased emotional wellbeing, reduced coping strategies and lower work performance.

• Constantly brining up your trivial mistakes again and again, especially if it’s done in front of colleagues • Having your achievements ignored and your potential for promotion overlooked • Being given an excessive amount of work or not receiving all of the necessary information making it impossible to complete a job • Causing public humiliation and/or excessively yelling or swearing • Backhanded comments designed to be condescending • Being excluded from necessary team meetings or emails isolating you socially and professionally.

How to respond appropriately Assess the bully’s behaviour; is it a one off incident or repeated attacks over a period of time? If it is an ongoing issue then you need to take action. If possible, gather evidence of the bullying. This might mean keeping notes of your interactions, saving threatening emails or asking a witness to support your claim.

Know your organisation’s policy on workplace bullying so you have a better understanding of how your employer will handle the situation, then report the bully. It can be difficult, especially if the bully has knocked your confidence. Report the bullying as factually and objectively as possible. Recount your experiences and share your documented proof.

Learning from your own advice Why being a mentor makes good business sense We know that it’s important in business to give something back. Not only is it good for the business, but it’s also good for your own personal and professional development as a manager and leader. We talk to Spark Digital’s Vanessa Sorrenson about how mentoring others can bring about positive change. These days it’s popular for organisations to give their staff a ‘volunteer day’ where they get paid to help out at a local charity. But it’s quite another story for individuals to commit their own time over a four year period to meet regularly with a young person from a vastly different background. Thirteen years ago when she was still scrambling her own way up the corporate ladder, Vanessa Sorrenson decided to commit to being one of a group of foundation mentors in the YWCA Auckland Future Leaders Programme. This life changing developmental programme is where young women (aged 14-18 years) from low decile schools are paired with a female mentor who helps to develop their leadership skills, resilience, and confidence. Today Vanessa holds an enviable role at Spark Digital as GM, Enterprise Clients. She cites the main reason she originally put her hand up to be a mentor was as a way to give back to others. She readily admits to being unprepared for the far-reaching benefits it would bring to her own personal and professional development and indirectly, to her employer. Vanessa believes that her experience as a mentor really helped her reflect on her own leadership strengths and weaknesses and

that this learning has helped shape her into the successful leader she is today. “Being involved as a mentor in this programme was an enriching experience in more ways than I could have imagined. I underestimated how much I would learn about myself as part of the process of being a mentor. “In order for me to be a successful mentor I needed to look critically at my own leadership style which helped my development, both professionally and personally. “The young woman whom I mentored was quite different to me in her background and personality, and that made the experience richer for me, because I had to look at things from a different set of eyes. "I am much more of an A-type personality and very driven, whereas my mentoree was more considered and planned. This was an amazing lesson for me to learn because it pointed out how two completely different people are both correct, as long as you are clear on your plan and what success looks like. My view wasn’t always the right path. It might sound like a cliché but I think I gained as much from her as she did from me.”

Some key benefits of becoming a mentor: Builds professional development Mentoring helps you grow as a manager and leader which in turn improves your own productivity. Improves your interpersonal skills Mentoring brings a greater appreciation of differing learning styles and motivational factors and with that comes greater empathy. Adds meaning to what you do The opportunity to give something back and share your skills and knowledge with the next generation really helps bring to life organisational cultural values. Networking and fostering relationships with other mentors can create opportunities for your business. Opportunities to reflect on your own career, how you got to your current position and articulate what you want from the next step in your career. The gift of giving The rewards of volunteering By Laura Baker

Anne Frank once wrote “No one has ever become poor by giving” - a statement that holds a lot of truth. Emotionally and mentally those who volunteer receive an abundance of gratitude, a sense of purpose, and they can build meaningful relationships with new people.

own time or on behalf of your business, you’ll discover a lot of benefits. Here are just a few:

But aside from these feel good factors, what are the quantifiable benefits of volunteering. It’s ok to ask the question, ‘what’s in it for me’? Asking this doesn’t make you a selfish or egotistical person. It’s only natural to wonder what you’ll receive in return for giving your time, skills or money.

Skill development Volunteering helps you learn new skills, keep skills sharp, or use existing skills in new ways.

Give back As a local business, your relationship to your community is symbiotic—when they thrive, they’re more likely to support your business. So celebrate your success by giving back. It may not pay direct dividends, but you’ll surely see a benefit.

Community connections Being an active member of your local community and donating your time and money makes you feel more socially connected, thus warding off loneliness and depression.

Career exploration Regardless of your age or career level, volunteering will introduce you to new professional paths. Volunteering can be an excellent way to learn more about a particular role or sector.

So, if you’re wondering ‘do I really get more than I give’? the answer is yes. Whether you are doing volunteer work in your

Make new contacts If you are looking to branch out socially, whether it is for professional or personal benefit, volunteering is a great avenue to meet new likeminded people who care about the same issues you do.

Management | Changing direction

900 million people are unfulfilled with their work Here’s what to do if you’re one of them A single entrepreneur, a single artist, a single author, a single startup or a single company cannot change the world - but what about 900 million of us? There are 900 million people in 142 countries who are unfulfilled with what they do in life [Gallup Poll]. In the US alone, 70 percent of people working are unhappy and don’t care for what they do. Millennials are the most unfulfilled and care least about what they do at work. This is an enormous squandered potential, a lot of misdirected minds and many unhappy people. Just think about the positive impact these people can make in the world if they started doing something they valued. The majority of the 79 million US Millennials are either unemployed, underpaid, or weighed down with student loans, and according to Bankrate.com, one in four Millennials has more debt than savings. Some 94 percent of college students currently graduate with debt, so what will they do when they graduate? According to research at MIT and Oxford University, almost half of the jobs will be automated in the next 20 years. Google’s top rated futurist speaker, Thomas Frey, predicts that two billion jobs will be automated by 2030. What will all these people do when a robot or an app will replace them?

Here are three important points to keep in mind for the future: 1. Focus more intensely on your passion and purpose in life This will be the foundation on which you will build everything in the future. Living and doing meaningful work gives you the necessary drive to keep learning, to work harder and invest your resources (time, money, energy) into building something that you are proud of, something that you want to share with the world. You might have to defeat social resistance and silence what others demand from you. If you are not sure what your passion is, fill in the gap: Before I die, I want to... 2. Develop skills and knowledge in the service of your passion The results you get in life are in direct proportion with your knowledge and abilities – and with your willingness to do the work. Build everything in life from the profound knowing that you are perfect just the way you are, and if results are not as you want them to be, understand that you need to learn what you don’t know. Once you know and have the willingness to apply this knowledge - success will follow. No matter what age you are, when you stop learning and exploring, you instantly begin to grow old. Reality will rush by you. You will begin to live in the past, believing a truth that has now become a lie and wandering around in a world that no longer exists.

Living your passion is your truth and will take your pain away. Choose the process that brings joy in the end, not regrets. The road will be hard but it will be meaningful. Success without fulfillment equals failure.

“I want to work with children, but...”, “I want to help others, but...”. But creates pain and pain can lead to anxiety, anger and depression. Pain can lead to abuse, drinking and violence.

3. Understand the difference between pain and suffering

Living your passion is your truth and will take your pain away. Choose the process that brings joy in the end, not regrets. The road will be hard but it will be meaningful. Success without fulfillment equals failure.

You know what you most value in life, you know what your passion is. You know your truth and you know what your will is. Pain shows up every time you deny, ignore or rationalise away your will and your truth.

Heading for left field The world’s weirdest jobs By Laura Baker

There is a world of unusual jobs out there, from the cringe worthy to the obscene. So if you’re looking for a change of profession here are some of the more off the wall options you could consider… just to remind yourself that anything’s possible. Train pusher The morning and evening commute at Japanese train stations can get extremely crowded. Professional train pushers are hired during rush hour to literally shove as many people onto the trains as possible. Train pushers assist commuters by pulling train doors apart slightly to stuff a bag, jacket or even a person in properly so the door will close. Indian ear cleaner Ear cleaners roam the streets of India equipped with a steel needle, a wad of cotton and a pair of tweezers. The ear cleaners remove ear wax, dust and foreign objects from their customers’ ears using homemade ear buds and rudimentary tools. But it’s a dying profession as the younger generation opt to use storebought cotton buds instead. Dog surfing instructor If you’ve ever wanted your dog to take surfing lessons it can now be arranged thanks to dog surfing instructors in San Diego. Many owners who want their dog to enter the world of show business have been known to hire a dog surfing instructor to give their pooch private one-on-one lessons. 12 |November/December 2016    www.aucklandtoday.net.nz

Face feeler A face feeler’s job is, you guessed it, to feel people’s faces. Their job is to determine how effective their clients’ facial beauty products are. If they think their client’s skin doesn’t feel at its best, they can recommend other beauty products that would be more suitable for their client’s needs. Professional hugger Everyone needs a hug once and a while, but many people don’t have a significant other to cuddle with. This is where a professional hugger comes in. They will snuggle with their client whilst charging up to $80 an hour. Clothes are worn by both parties the whole time. Professional bridesmaid Professional bridesmaids are there to assist brides on their big day. The undercover bridesmaid acts as the bride’s personal

assistant leading up to and on the big day. They are also hired if the bride doesn’t have enough friends to stand by her side. Professional bridesmaids can charge anywhere from $300 to $2,000 per wedding. Dog food taster You’d be forgiven for thinking this job is held by dogs, but it is not. Humans are hired by pet food companies to test dog food. They test the taste, quality and nutritional value of the product. After holding the food in their mouth for a short time they spit it out and score it. Professional line stander If you can’t take the day off work to stand in line for the new iPhone release, then a professional line-stander can take your place. They’ll even wait in line overnight to guarantee their clients get their hands on what it is they are after. Some line-standers make up to $1,000 a week.

KE E PI NG B RAN DS TOP OF M I N D In today’s hyper-competitive world, successful promotion requires more than a simple letterbox drop or a television advertisement. Christchurch promotional merchandise company Bright Sparks give their clients an edge on the competition through a personalised approach to delivering products, and ultimately experiences, that leave a lasting impression. Since its conception in 1995, Bright Sparks has grown into one of New Zealand’s leading branded merchandise companies with a product range that spans across promotional merchandise, corporate gifts, and custom branded clothing. Led by director Ella Webster, they recently moved into a modern office in the Christchurch CBD, with an adjacent warehouse holding inventory ready for New Zealand-wide deliveries for the various managed merchandise programmes Bright Sparks run. Across more than 20 years developing and providing promotional merchandise, Bright Sparks have maintained a fresh, imaginative company culture that is more characteristic of a younger business. This contemporary outlook, combined with a carefully developed supply network, enables them to reliably deliver a breadth of promotional solutions that are full of purpose and creativity. With a client base including small local companies, larger corporate clients, sports teams and non-profits, the team at Bright Sparks live by the ethos that there is no request too grand or difficult. They never shy away from a challenge.

Promotional merchandise can often be hit or miss. If it fails to add value, be it aesthetic, practical or even humorous, it risks being forgotten about, often along with your brand. Ella Webster believes customisation is imperative to successful promotional merchandising. Whether it be customising your corporate gifts for individual clients, or creating custom products for an event, personalised products highlight your unique point of difference while also ensuring you stand out from the crowd. Bright Sparks create bespoke products from idea generation right through to distribution. Ella Webster maintains this goes beyond simply taking a product and adding a logo. “Our client NZ Ski needed a durable bag for customers to use on the mountain, so we worked with our supplier to create a strong, waterproof bag, that’s practical as well as eye-catching.” Ella Webster credits both her Christchurch-based team and their network of international suppliers for the company’s continued growth and success. Bright Sparks make regular trips to international suppliers in order to enhance staff product knowledge and keep them ahead of industry trends. These visits also ensure suppliers continue to uphold both ethical and quality standards.

Ella says “This global network puts Bright Sparks at the forefront of trends in the industry and enables us to bring international knowledge and experience to the New Zealand market. This offers our clients reassurance that Bright Sparks has a world class foundation on which we build our business.” Corporate social responsibility is a core part of their company culture, from supplier selection right through to community involvement. Bright Sparks are proud partners of Ronald McDonald House, which works to keep families together during difficult times. Ella and her team see this mission as immensely valuable and are more than happy to support such a worthy cause. At face value, promotional companies such as Bright Sparks connect organisations to merchandise with the aim of increasing return on investment. Beyond that is the goal of fostering customer engagement and enhancing brands in a way no other form of advertising can. By acknowledging these drivers, Bright Sparks continue to develop relationships with clients and suppliers alike to deliver products that make an impact and ultimately keep their clients’ brands top of mind.

Bright Sparks’ supply network is strengthened by membership in the World Advertising Gifts Exchange (WAGE). This global group fosters collaborative practices in the promotional merchandising industry to ensure ethical supply and reduce environmental impact.

Bags of success My Food Bag’s Cecilia Robinson By Laura Baker

Cecilia Robinson is the modern day definition of Superwoman. She is the co-CEO and mastermind behind My Food Bag, a rapidly growing company turning out multi-million dollar revenues. Simultaneously she is a dedicated, doting mother of two young children.

News | Cover story

My Food Bag answers the tricky question families’ face every day – what are we having for dinner tonight? The increasingly popular service is based on the home delivery of food parcels containing all the ingredients needed for a week’s main meals together with simple, healthy and delicious recipes. The business was co-founded by Cecilia and her husband James Robinson, together with celebrity chef and brand ambassador, Nadia Lim and highprofile business personality Theresa Gattung. Cecilia explains she and husband James run the business together. He oversees the finance, marketing and IT departments, while she runs customer love, operation and procurement and the development kitchen. “My husband and I are fortunate to have a fantastic working relationship – we complement each other’s skill sets and enjoy working closely together.” Nadia is the “fantastic” brand ambassador whose food philosophy guides the recipe development in the test kitchen and last, but not least Theresa, fondly known by Cecilia as TG, brings a wealth of business knowledge and connections. “The mix of the people involved has been our magic formula.” The powerful team have a lofty goal; they want to revolutionise the way New Zealand’s eat. “We want to create healthier and stronger communities throughout New Zealand using food.” While speaking to Cecilia over the phone, she tells me she’s breastfeeding her threemonth-old daughter Leila and keeping one eye

on four-year-old -son Thomas as we speak; a handful for any parent, “but that shouldn’t affect our interview” she coolly says. And it doesn’t - she manages all three tasks simultaneously without missing a beat. Perhaps her ability to multi-task is just a glimpse into how she won the 2012 HER Business Woman of the Year award, the 2013 EY Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the 2014 Business and Innovation category at the annual NEXT Woman of the Year Awards.

Now or never Originally from Sweden, Cecilia found the inspiration for My Food Bag on a trip visiting her home-country. “I saw this concept overseas and fell in love with it. Immediately I thought ‘that’s what I need’! I love cooking, but I hate the day to day grind of trying to think of what to cook.” During that stage in their lives the couple was running their first outrageously successful startup, Au Pair Link – a live-in childcare service. Cecilia was also pregnant with their first child. “I’d gone on maternity leave and I got sick of doing the things you normally do, like cooking and ironing. I said to my husband that I’d had the idea for My Food Bag and I wanted to write the business plan he looked at me pretty bewildered, but said ‘yip, go ahead honey’, so I did. “At 41 weeks I was navigating a fat belly while leaning over the computer typing up the business plan for My Food Bag, it was pretty crazy. “I clicked ‘save’ on the business plan about four hours before I went into labour with Thomas. Four weeks after I’d given birth we were presenting the plan to the board of Au Pair Link.

I saw this concept overseas and fell in love with it. Immediately I thought ‘that’s what I need’! I love cooking, but I hate the day to day grind of trying to think of what to cook.

“Looking back now it was one of my best decisions to pursue My Food Bag when I was just about to give birth! It’s taught me that there is never the right time to pursue a dream and that really it’s the things we don’t do that we generally regret.”

A growing appetite Launched originally in Auckland in March 2013, My Food Bag struck a chord with kiwis overnight. Now, just over three years on, it’s grown significantly, sweeping the country. So much so it was named National Rising Star in the NZ Deloitte Fast 50 Awards in 2014. Forty thousand families nationwide from Invercargill to Whangarei now rely on it for their evening meal. It’s catching on across the ditch too after jumping the Tasman in 2014 with operations in Melbourne and Sydney. “We’ve had huge growth, our forecast revenue for the 2017 financial year is expected to be more than $135 million and that’s in less than three and a half years of being in business. So that’s pretty incredible growth.”

for so many families. I think that is why they choose My Food Bag.

“A lot of our customers come back to us and say My Food Bag is life changing. ‘Suddenly my husband is cooking and my kids are helping and people in the family who wouldn’t normally cook are actually contributing’.”

Double act Being a full time mum and a business leader is a “really interesting juggle,” Cecilia says, but she has got the double act down to a fine art. Most people think that they have to separate their work from their personal life, but the trick to fulfilling both roles equally is by integrating the two she says. Both she and James are focused on being working parents, which has been made possible by getting the children into a routine that works for them. She stays present for Leila and Thomas during the day and pops into the office while Leila is napping.

In the evening she and James cook dinner together, using My Food Bag of course, before Growing quickly is all well and good, but it putting their children to bed and continuing to means nothing if you’re not equipped for it, a fact work on the business into the evening. “It means that Cecilia is well aware of. I’m able to maximise my time with them while still being able to be there for the business. We “It sounds amazing to grow at the rate that we have, but it can cause a real logistical nightmare just make it work.” as well. You have to really know what you are Coincidence, or not, Cecilia’s two start-ups Au doing and put an appropriate plan in place to be Pair Link, which they sold almost two years ago, able to service that growth.” and My Food Bag, both serve functions which She says her strategy to deal with the fast growth is to always stay one step ahead and know the numbers inside out, to be able to anticipate its needs and fill customer demand. The originally Auckland-based businesses growth into the regions has been fuelled by customer demand, “we go where we are wanted”. That was certainly the case when the Invercargill and Taupo communities set up Facebook pages calling for My Food Bag to service their towns. “That sort of demand is amazing, we love it. Obviously we have to go to the regions where you’ve got people who rally behind it like that.” The roaring success of the business comes down to one simple fact. “We have solved the ‘what are we having for dinner tonight’ problem

ease the pressures of daily domestic life.

She says James often jokes that she creates companies just to make her life easier, but that’s just an added bonus she laughs. “I’m really passionate about solving real problems that families come across every day. I identify with the target market and see what the problems and opportunities are because we have the same problems and struggles as any other family.” Just as her time is split so too are her goals. Personally her focus is on raising a happy family and spending a lot of time together. But of course the business woman in her has big goals too. She aims to continue the development and expansion of the My Food Bag empire. What that will actually materialise into is under wraps for now, but no doubt it will be a raging success. AT

LOOKING GOOD MADE EASY They say the big day is all about the bride and, while many a hubby may find himself a lot better off for suggesting as much to his bride to be, fact is it’s not altogether true, something which would become blatantly obvious for any groomsman who dares show up in Uncle Harry’s 1970’s emerald velvet suit. But Tailor Made Suits is a step above… and a stylish one at that. Not only does this family owned tailoring business offer custom made tailored suits, but never before have high

quality tailored suits been a more affordable option, director Doyle Trinh explains. “Compared to some of the big players out there, our tailored suits are a similar pricing to their ready to wear suits,” he says. “Although we offer a more affordable option, we still maintain the exceptionally high quality we’re known for. As a result, we sell in the vicinity of 60 tailored suits every month, which we believe is more than any other locally based company.” The local suit market has been changing dramatically, with New Zealand tailors under threat by hotel-based international tailors arriving in New Zealand. The businesses regularly set up shop in New Zealand hotels for a few days at a time, collecting measurements for garments that are made overseas and sent back to the customer. “A lot of really big companies have been shutting down because they simply can’t compete against the overseas tailors and the cheap off the shelf suits in the local market,” Doyle says. “However, with our unique proposition we are in fact expanding rather than closing.” Many of the overseas based companies only come to New Zealand every six months, with suits taking on average 2-3 months to be shipped back. However, this process becomes even longer if any errors are made or items have to be sent back.

“We have a New Zealand base,” Doyle says. “We travel to Christchurch every six weeks rather than six months, so we can sort out issues quickly and efficiently. In many cases we can get a message to our production facility in Auckland, which is open seven days a week, and have the item shipped back down within a few days. “We’re extremely flexible and efficient, and when it comes to weddings and events, that’s exactly what you need in a tailor.” With wedding season hitting fever pitch locally from around October to April, it’s also Tailor Made Suits’ busy season. “By travelling to Wellington and Christchurch every six weeks, we are able to help wedding groups throughout the whole country. We already have Christchurch tour bookings opened up until February next year, so people can jump online and book ahead.” When you visit the website www.tailormadesuits.co.nz you’ll find a recently updated website, with a whole new look. You could say the company has upped its image and now looks almost as sharp as its suits. On the website, you’ll also find an innovative new option to ‘pay monthy’. Exactly as it sounds, pay monthly is an easy and affordable option to make sure your suits are up to date. Pick the frequency of the suits, shirts or accessories that you prefer and follow the prompts to pay. The system will remember and charge the same amount, from the same credit card same day, next month etc. “There are different packages and pricing plans available, you just sign up online,” Doyle explains. “We’ve only recently launched this option to our existing customers and we already have a number of people who have signed up. Every time we speak to customers about this option, they’re excited.” And even more exciting yet, is the incredible deal open to Auckland Today magazine readers – a group discount of 25 percent when you purchase suits for two or more people. Just mention this article.

Interview | Hayden Paddon

HAYDEN PADDON By Lydia Truesdale

Fourteen to 16 hours per day, temperatures of up to 55 to 60 degrees Celsius and speeds of up to 220km/h; that’s a typical day in the life of 29 year old World Rally Championship (WRC) driver Hayden Paddon.

His earliest memories of racing evoke an exuberant, youthful side of him. “I remember racing go-karts at the local family kart club when I was nine, getting covered in mud and trying to win as many trophies as I could,” Hayden recalls.

The South Cantabrian just notched a major milestone – not only for himself but for our little nation – when he became the first New Zealander ever to win a leg of the WRC.

The early years

He solidified his capability at international level by finishing ninth overall and ahead of all the PWRC regulars.

In 2002 at the age of 15, the same week he’d passed his Learner’s driver license, Hayden competed in his first rally, Rally Hamner.

“It was always a dream to be a WRC driver, but it was not until we won the Pirelli scholarship that I believed that it was possible,” he says.

He went on to compete in the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2006, winning both the junior and rookie titles, and in 2007 made his WRC debut as a wildcard entry at the Production World Rally Championship event in New Zealand, retaining his junior title and coming within one point of winning the championship outright, a title he would go on to claim the following year.

Geraldine’s backcountry had certainly proved the perfect landscape for a young Hayden to hone his talents. Between its gentle rolling hills and its winding, shingle roads, it’s little wonder that gravel came to be Hayden’s favourite surface to compete on.

So how exactly does one get from small-town New Zealand onto the WRC circuit, let alone winning a stage of it? For Hayden, rallying isn’t just a sport, nor is it a hobby or occupation. It’s a vocation, a way of life, and the only way of life he wants to know. Racing is Hayden’s blood. His father Chris was a rally driver long before Hayden was born, and while Hayden felt no pressure to follow in his father’s footsteps he certainly felt a desire to. 18 |November/December 2016    www.aucklandtoday.net.nz

“But this also stretched into practising on the back lawn nearly every weekend, ripping up the grass.” He started out in go-karts at the age of six and by the age of 12, as soon as he was old enough to obtain his motorsport license, he made the move to cars. From there his hunger for the sport only intensified.

But 2009 was a particularly significant year in the amateur’s career. Not only did he retain his New Zealand title but he also won the Pacific Cup and qualified for the Pirelli Star Driver Asia-Pacific final at Rally Australia, with the fastest time of the opening stage. This earned him the Pirelli Star Driver scholarship, a fully-funded programme for six events of the 2010 WRC season. Not surprisingly he was also the worthy recipient of a $50,000 Rising Stars scholarship through Rally New Zealand, which gave him the crucial funding needed to complete his 2010 PWRC campaign.

“It certainly helped growing up in the country, racing around on the paddocks in the farm and occasionally taking the long way to school or work via some back roads”.

Interview | Hayden Paddon

Rallying is not just a sport for me; it’s a life and a passion.

I remember racing go-karts at the local family kart club when I was nine, getting covered in mud and trying to win as many trophies as I could. - HAYDEN PADDON

But more than its unique geography, it was the support of the Geraldine community that helped spawn and shape Hayden’s career. “Coming from a small town helped me as everyone knew what I was doing; 90 percent of the businesses in the town helped me and everyone was supportive. It was amazing.

“Thanks to a group of dedicated South Canterbury businessmen and shareholders, we were able to get together the funding for the 2011 season, and we repaid the faith and trust people put in us by winning the PWRC that year. “It was a crucial year for the future.”

Life on the road “Driving a rally car is not like a road car – long three day events (up to 14-16 hours competing per day), high temperatures (up to 55-60 degrees in the car on hot events), high adrenalin and a high pressure environment means the body is under pressure to perform at the highest level,” says Hayden. Training is therefore focused on a lot of areas – cardio fitness, strength, balance, mental training and psyche. “Each day would be made up of 2-3 hours physical training, up to one hour mental training, along with study work of the next upcoming event.”

“After the scholarship year in 2010 we had to fund our own campaign to stay in the WRC in 2011, and we knew if we disappeared that we would never get back again.”

In 2015 Hayden signed a contract to stay with Hyundai Motorsport until the end of 2018. It’s a valued partnership; one that Hayden believes can win the WRC.

He set about establishing Hayden Paddon Rallysport Global Ltd – a conglomerate of generous locals who recognised Hayden’s talent and dedication and were all too happy to provide the financial backing that would help see the young man realise his dreams.

While Hyundai Motorsport is made up of roughly 200 people of nationalities from all around the world, Hayden’s direct team is a much smaller affair involving just himself, his co-driver of 11 years, John Kennard and his fiancé and PR guru Katie.

“It’s like a family within the team and our partnership with Hyundai NZ, and I believe we can win the WRC with them.” But it won’t be without challenge and sacrifice. “It’s not as glamorous as everyone thinks – we spend very little time in NZ, a lot of time in airports and we are away from family and friends for 11 months of the year. Being part of a professional team is very different compared to when back in New Zealand running the team with family and friends.” There are still three remaining events of the season: Spain, then Great Britten, and the final event in Australia in November. The WRC certainly absorbs most of his time but he’s not complaining, rather saying he’s “living the dream and working towards the ultimate goal”. And that’s not to say there’s no time for personal endeavours. Hayden is working on some exciting projects for the future, as well as looking forward to tying the knot with fiancée Katie in the next year or two. Despite having travelled to and experienced many exotic locations, Hayden still believes New Zealand is the best place in the world. He makes the most of his time spent at home by visiting family and friends and, if there’s time, squeezing in some mountain biking and a few rounds of golf.

Paying it forward Given the amount of success he’s enjoyed you’d be forgiven for thinking Hayden mightn’t be humble, but you’d be wrong. His unassuming persona is unwavering. He regards both his co-driver and fiancée as integral to his success, and the same goes for those who have joined him and stuck by him on his ambitious journey. “Rally has given me a lot and I would not be where I am without the help hundreds of people have given me. I want to see the sport grow and to give something back in a small way.” He’s been hard at work since the beginning of 2016 establishing the Paddon Rally Foundation with the vision of growing rally sport in New Zealand. Recognising that he wouldn’t be where he is without the immense support and guidance of many, the Paddon Rally Foundation is set up to attract new competitors to the sport and provide a support network that helps develop talent. “It’s in its early stages but we will be accepting applications at the end of this year and the target is to assist many competitors each year of all levels – to encourage more people into the sport and keep people in the sport. “Rallying is not just a sport for me; it’s a life and a passion.”

Moving mass Moving superyachts, ships and project cargoes around Auckland waters is a job that leaves little room for error, but the experienced team at Thomson Towboats has the skills and the fleet to ensure your marine towage or salvage job is carried out to the highest possible standard. The company’s established a reputation as a reliable, safe, quality towage operator, running a fleet of four tugboats and the barge Maui.

Thomson Towboats started that job in April and usually does one trip per week using one of its larger tugboats, the Christine Mary.

While formed by Jim and Christine Thomson and their son Mike Thomson in 1988, today it is owned and operated by their daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Lance Brown. They employ four permanent staff and four casuals, with Virginia running the office and accounts and Jim remaining on call to help out as a back-up skipper when needed or just to give some advice.

High quality towing work

The company provides a broad range of services to the local marine industry, including towage, salvage and delivery work. “The main big job we’re doing at the moment is carting rock from Whangarei to Auckland for the container terminal expansion project,” Lance says. “We’ve done about 24 voyages to date, carting armour rock for the sea wall at about 1,400 tonnes per voyage. That work is being done for a local dredging and construction company that works for the port, Heron Construction. There are two barges that belong to them; we take the empty one away and bring a full one back.”

“We tow quite a number of superyachts, generally to and from repair facilities when they come in for a refit. We’ve also towed a few along the coastal passages when they’ve been in trouble,” says Lance. Specialised marine services include: • Harbour towage • Coastal and ocean towage • Project cargoes • Barge hire • Tandem and multiple vessel tows • Dredge support • Salvage • Wreck removal • Pilot/crew transfer • Stores delivery • Fuel and fresh water delivery • Vessel delivery.

Thomson Towboats offers a professional and safe towage service around Auckland and Northland waters

<

Thomson Towboats’ newest tug is the Turihaua, which Lance says is larger than the other three and was built specifically for handling ships. “It’s much more manoeuvrable than the other ones and we use it a lot more around the harbour in Auckland,” he says.

Thomson Towboats has the experience to perform all types of specialised towing work, including for high value yachts. Its team of skilled tug masters and able crew are ready to respond within hours to most situations, 24/7.

“With the superyachts you can’t touch them or scratch them and it takes a bit of skill and years of experience to make those jobs go right.” They also cart explosives on their barge and tow fuel barges for refuelling ships for Stolthaven. This refuelling work is often busier in the summer during the Auckland cruise ship season, and is subject to rigorous safety audits by BP New Zealand. Other interesting jobs completed by Thomson Towboats in recent years include looking after more than 450 tonnes of high explosives in 38 containers on barges at Motuihe, assisting

monthly berthing of ships at the Chelsea Sugar Refinery and transporting two homes on a 30 hour trip from Bucklands Beach in East Tamaki to Mangonui. Sleek new Baleno steps into the compact hatch arena

Complete auto servicing

Suzuki’s new five door compact hatch, the Baleno, seems not to be making any waves… air waves that is. Situated in sunny Silverdale, one-stop automotive centre Wade Motors has been keeping drivers on the Hibiscus Coast mobile for more than 25 years. Now under new ownership, brother-sister duo Sam and Sylvie Weibel purchased Wade Motors in April this year, at the time adopting the principles that earned the business its stellar reputation but also adding their personal touches of exclusive expertise and genuine enthusiasm for what they do.

Built on a fresh platform to be used by future Suzuki models, the Baleno has a Cd drag coefficient figure of just 0.299, making it the most streamlined production Suzuki to date. In spite of a modest overall length of 3,995mm, the Baleno offers a remarkable amount of front and rear legroom, easy entry and exit and a deep 355 litre capacity boot, which is more than twice the capacity of the Swift’s load area. There is 20mm more room between the front seats and the 805mm of rear seat legroom is a 70mm increase compared to the Swift. The Baleno is positioned between the top-selling Swift and the S-Cross. It is 145mm longer than the Swift, 50mm wider and sits on a wheelbase of 2,520mm, a 90mm increase. It also has wider tracks front and rear and, in keeping with the model profile, is 40mm lower.

Although larger than the Swift, the Baleno’s new platform is a remarkable 100 kgs lighter, a key factor in the car’s good power to weight ratio and impressive fuel economy.

The longer wheelbase and a shortened engine room with the compact mechanicals have contributed to the extended cabin area.

A proven four-stage automatic transmission with overdrive is optional on GLX versions, and is standard on the LTD. The entry level GLX is also available with a five speed manual gearbox.

Although larger than the Swift, the Baleno’s new platform is a remarkable 100kgs lighter, a key factor in the car’s good power to weight ratio and impressive fuel economy. In the combined official fuel cycle test, the manual Baleno averaged 5.1 litres/100km, a 7.3 percent improvement over the Swift.

The GLX is priced at $21,990 plus on road costs and comes with 15 inch steel wheels, while the same specification with automatic transmission is $23,990. LTD automatic ($24,990) has all the GLX equipment and adds 16 inch eight-spoked smoked aluminium alloy wheels plus front fog lamps.

BRYANT MARINE Taking kiwis to the water With the world’s best harbour on our front door and the promise of a great summer ahead, the sea is again reeling us in with her allure, making now the ultimate time for boaties to prepare to take advantage of the ocean’s wondrous opportunities.

Whether you’re looking to add a new aluminium or fibreglass boat to the family, or it’s time for that annual pre-season maintenance check-up on an existing one, the expert team at Bryant Marine can assist from their handy location at the Half Moon Bay Marina. Through his technical expertise with outboard and inboard motors and as a supplier of products and service for the Mercury brand, Ray Bryant is well known in the boating community, with Bryant Marine able to repair and provide all makes and models of outboards and inboard motors, and offer one of the country’s leading authorised MerCruiser Re-power Centres, supplying parts, motors and stern legs throughout New Zealand and the Pacific. Customers come from all over New Zealand or Ray (or one of his expert technicians), will travel to them, with his last ‘working’ trip to the tropical shores of Rarotonga. Bryant Marine is the upper North Island agent for Kiwikraft and Aquiline aluminium boats, as well as the North Island agent for fibreglass Barchetta boats which are made in the South Island by leading international boat designer, Scott Robson.

BOATS

The Argo Drive showroom is where dreams are made and shopping lists written, with a number of great looking boats on display and the staff to provide information on the models available. Ray established Bryant Marine on the Half Moon Bay Marina in 1987, though he’s had to move premises three times to accommodate business growth. Today the fully equipped workshop and engineering facility is located five minutes from the boat ramp, close to the hardstand and haul-out facilities. The location is a draw-card for Ray, who loves the convenience and atmosphere of the popular hub with its vibrant new restaurants and supermarket. “It’s a very nice setting at the heart of the boating world,” he says. “The marina is really a one stop boating shop. We have boat builders, boat painters, riggers, electricians and many others involved in the industry. The different businesses work in well together – we enjoy good relationships.” Bryant Marine has a strong team of four including experienced technician, Andy Rushton, who has been with the company for 11 years and a boat

broker is available to assist customers keen on investing in larger new and used boats. Ray is a qualified automotive mechanic himself, who started his working life on trucks and industrial equipment. “I got sick of working on big, dirty and heavy things and decided to concentrate on a career as an outboard motor technician.” In the early 80s, he was based out of Townsville in Northern Australia, his work taking him to many exciting locations, where he “worked on boats right around the Australian coastline” before his career took on a faster pace in the mid-90s, when he was part of the Kiwi racing team representing New Zealand at World Offshore Racing in Argentina. It’s this almost life-long love of boats that ensures Ray and his team are the people to see for advice on all aspects of safe boating and in making the right choice if you are considering investing in a new outboard or inboard in either diesel or petrol. At Bryant Marine, the friendly service is backed up by many years of experience and a little advice really could save you money and heartbreak in the long term.

Land Clearance - Tree Services - Excavations There are thousands of tree removal companies in Auckland, but only a handful of them have grapple excavators and big chippers to effectively deal with large trees or high volumes of trees. Aarons Contracting is one of the few who does. CONTRACT CHIPPING – EXCAVATOR MULCHING – LAND CLEARANCE Aarons Contracting specialises in the clearance of land development sites throughout Auckland, Waikato and further afar. Contract chipping and excavator mulching are what sets the company apart from the rest. Operating a large truck, chipper and excavators – equipment that proves particularly useful in cleaning up the mess that crane or helicopter tree removals produce – Aarons is the preferred choice with other tree companies looking for quality, reliable assistance with their larger projects. Having two sizes of excavators ensures that gorse, blackberry and other scrub vegetation can be easily mulched into the ground, even in difficult areas, for a cost-effective and hassle-free solution. During his time in the industry Aaron has undertaken a whole range of projects, from planting, climbing and cartage, to assisting on projects in the South Island and Waiheke Island, and even chipping up the debris around the Hobsonville area following the tornado in 2012 and more recently undertaking mangrove chipping. It’s this varied background that positions him as an experienced hand and arguably the only one to turn to for your land clearance, tree removal and earthworks needs. Aarons Contracting Ltd would like to thank Garry from Frazer Fabrication for his support as an expert truck body fabricator for the tree industry.

Whangarei’s vessel experts An island nation nestled comfortably in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand’s close relationship with the sea cannot be underestimated. Yet, in much the same way as our road vehicles require regular maintenance and repairs, so too do the vessels which transport both us and our cargo across the water. Based in Whangarei, Ship Repair NZ is the largest privately owned ship repair company north of Auckland, providing ship repairs, marine fabrication and heavy engineering, custom ship refits and ship surveys on a wide range of marine vessels.

“The vessel was initially built in Whangarei,” Ship Repair NZ project manager, Nick Eilering, explains of the 36 metre vessel. “So in a way it comes home every two years to have scheduled maintenance carried out. This year we carried out stage one of a mid-life refit process.” The Western Ranger is owned and operated by Sanford Ltd, New Zealand’s largest fishing company, which has embarked on an overhaul of the company’s fishing fleet, which includes replacement vessels, mid-life updates, improved planning and asset management.

another 15 years and began with stripping apart the brine alley and service alley. “We carried out structural repairs to the internal frames and hull plating,” Nick explains. “We stripped the entire aft refrigeration tunnel. We pulled out the driveline system, which involved taking out three different drive shafts and manufacturing two new intermediate shafts to put back in.” In the refrigeration tunnel, all the piping systems were replaced – brine, bilge, hydraulic and fuel piping systems. The refrigeration tunnel was then fully sandblasted and painted with a threecoat paint system.

For the next part of this ship refit the vessel lifting equipment – including main booms and rigging blocks – were all stripped, serviced and certified, the winches stripped and serviced, the mast repaired down to all three booms, and the purse seine winch overhauled.

But it’s the subtleties in the craftsmanship that truly creates lifelong satisfaction. Working for others and feeling restricted to their way of thinking, Richard Abbott always knew he was meant to run his own company; one where he was free to explore outside the box and go the extra mile to help clients get what they were after within their budget.

A wide array of general engineering repairs were carried out before the whole vessel was sandblasted and painted in Sanford’s blue and completed with the new company logo. Sanford Ltd is committed to becoming the best seafood company in the world and to realise that ambition, the company has a focus on improving employee health and wellbeing. “We’ve put in a lot of time to align ourselves with Sanford’s health and safety procedures and protocols,” Nick explains. “We work hard alongside them and we consider ourselves well placed to meet their needs.”

Weighing in at just under 2,000 tonnes, the tuna vessel – purchased from Sanford by an overseas buyer – also underwent an extensive refit, before being blasted and repainted, marking the transition from the San Nikunau to the Evelina da Rosa. “We are the biggest slipway north of Auckland,” Nick explains, “which enables us to work on vessels of this size, with our slipway inside a sheltered commercial wharf.” The facilities at Ship Repair NZ comprise of a 1,800 tonne capacity slipway, and a second 40 tonne slipway, with the necessary equipment and crew to attend to hull repairs on larger vessels or two smaller vessels at once in the main slipway.

Thinking outside the box has naturally led to some fascinating projects. One of particular note was using the bones of an old sheep shed and transforming it into a modern country-style home, fitted with French country fixtures and luxurious high raking ceilings. “There’s something to be said about not knocking down and starting again. Respecting what was there and using it to create a home that shines today is an honour,” says Richard. Three teams of two builders work alongside four teams of trusted subcontractors to ensure the finest level of craftsmanship is delivered. “We have a positive team spirit which spills out into the work carried out on site. For people on the move Business has existed in some form since the early barter systems of ancient civilisations. Yet despite the long history, few have mastered the key to corporate longevity.

For more than 100 years, Grace Removals has not only survived, but thrived in an industry known for its competitive nature, both at a local level and globally. Although some will tell you it is the result of commercial strategising, clever acquisitions and leveraged takeovers, for moving company Grace Removals, the key to success has simply been putting their customers first. “At Grace it’s about taking the stress out of one of life’s top five most stressful situations: moving house,” Grace Removals Auckland manager, John Scott, explains. “We use our years of moving experience and our customer focus to make our clients’ moves easier.” The local Grace Removals team in Auckland has many years of experience in the New Zealand relocation industry and are committed to delivering the highest level of customer service. To illustrate this point, Grace Removals is one of the few moving companies where all clients receive a follow-up phone call after their job has been completed to make sure everything went smoothly.

A team effort The success of Grace Removals has been a team effort, with a number of loyal suppliers playing a supporting role in the company’s 105 year history. Some of those companies include Conpac, which supplies Grace Removals’ packing materials. G M Security provides monitoring services including alarm systems and cameras. Massam Transport specialises in container transportation, carting containers to and from the wharf, while Hemisphere Freight Services provides off-shore air and sea freight services. Spacewise New Zealand supplies the shipping containers used on site for storage, including high quality, watertight, food grade containers and Sign FX provides the company’s sign writing, including the truck graphics.

“We also ask every customer if they’d be happy to move with Grace again, and our subsequent ‘yes’ rating always sits at over 96 percent, which is extremely gratifying and a sign of a job consistently well done,” John says.

The team at Grace understand the stresses associated with moving within New Zealand and overseas, which is why they focus on providing clients with a customised moving plan that caters to their specific needs.

“The very nature of moving means that trust and integrity are integral in this industry,” John says. Indeed, with removal companies going into strangers’ homes every day, handling their personal belongings, trust is imperative.

From the first phone call with a Grace Removals moving consultant, through to the movers packing your belongings, loading the truck and delivering your belongings, the company will provide a truly personalised service.

Focus | Stainless Engineering

Local fabricator marks four decades in the business Stainless Engineering Co Ltd reaches its 40th milestone this year. Director Leanne Morris attributes the stainless steel fabrication company’s success in a competitive industry to staying locally based and placing an emphasis on providing exemplary service and quality. She says while many companies have moved manufacturing overseas to save costs, Stainless Engineering has stayed local to enable them to provide a better product and to respond swiftly to local needs. “Staying local is one of our strengths,” she says. “We know the local standards, we can react promptly to any industry changes, and we know the local area and the requirements needed to suit our geographical areas.” Stainless Engineering was started 40 years ago by Leanne’s father, Geoff Morris, and his business partner Wayne Lye. One of the company’s original areas of expertise was producing stainless steel fabricated products for the wine industry, which was a major growth sector in the 1970s. It now fabricates stainless steel products for a wide range of industries, including food, beverage, dairying, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals. Its core business remains industrial processing equipment, pressure vessels, storage and mixing tanks, kettles, blenders, platforms, condensers, strainers, augers, pipework and ducting, in stainless steel from 1.5mm up to heavy plate. Geoff Morris became sole owner of the company in the mid 2000s, and Leanne took over from her father in 2011. The fabrication plant is still located on the original site in East Tamaki and they have clients that have been with them since the company’s early days. This continuity also extends to the staff. Leanne says they have staff members who have been with Stainless Engineering for many years, others have done their apprenticeship with the company,

gone to work elsewhere, then returned to Stainless Engineering. She attributes this loyalty to the company culture established by her father 40 years ago which continues to this day. “Dad’s values meant he was always fair and honest with his clients and his employees and that has been our strength and I have continued with these values.” The company is continuing to grow and Leanne says the challenge now is to continue her father’s legacy and ensure it survives and prospers for another 40 years. “As we look to the future we have acquired a larger guillotine and we will be a certified ISO 9001 company during November 2016 to continue to meet our clients’ needs. Organics Out West

The value of nature Organics Out West is your local, community-based organic and health products store designed to meet all of your needs.

Naturopathy Organics Out West has a naturopath available on staff to discuss your health needs. But again - what is Naturopathy? Naturopathy is a health practice that uses natural therapies in the treatment of illness and the optimisation of health. It uses herbs, good nutrition, and the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle.

Organics Out West really is a company passionate about organics; its knowledgeable and friendly team cares deeply about the food and products that go on its shelves.

It encourages the healing power of nature and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It takes a holistic approach to treating the whole person, not just the illness or symptoms. Also, other healing practices, such as homeopathy, acupuncture, and herbal medicine, are often included under the term naturopathy.

It is a family owned, customer focused, organic food and health shop and online store. The directors and team have a combined experience of more than 50 years in this sector. “To allow quality service, we have secured a stable frontline workforce that can consistently deliver outstanding customer service. We want to create the feeling of shopping how it used to be, friendly helpful and enjoyable.” Organics Out West is more than just a store – it is an environment that feeds you on many levels. The store sells a full range of organic produce, grocery items, bakery items, cosmetics, baby goods, household cleaners, beverages, and much more. It really is a one-stop-shop for all your health food store items. Produce is always sourced locally first for the store and only when items are not available locally, the team will research alternatives to ensure their quality.

Certified organic At Organics Out West products are either certified organic or are produced using organic practices, and they ensure that the certification is clearly marked for clients.

Organic, Local and Sustainable Wherever possible they buy local produce and products directly from the grower. They reduce, reuse and recycle, ensuring minimum waste and use eco-friendly cleaning methods in our store.

What is organic? While Organics Out West store and online shop is proud to be part of the tradition of selling wholesome organic products – the question for many remains: what is organics?

Organic products are produced without using sprays, chemicals or residuals. It is a holistic approach where the health of the soil, environment and planet is a priority. Long-term sustainability is placed ahead of short-term profits and innovative and modern techniques are used to control pests and diseases, which don’t harm the health of the consumer or the health of the planet.

Why buy organic? Organically grown fruit and vegetables taste better because they are grown in fertile soils in accordance with nature’s cycles. Organic products are chemical free and have not been tampered with, which has documented health benefits. You are helping the environment and are often supporting local growers and businesses.

Naturopathy has been practiced for thousands of years and is as old as medicine itself. At Organics Out West we stock a full range of organic health supplements, medicinal herbs, and have a herbal dispensary. Plus we have many of these products available online.

CleanSweep Awards | PPCS

PPCS sweeps to success Your business is usually a by-product of what you do well and, when you’re there, you don’t want to be focusing on cleaning, facility management, property services, waste management or grounds maintenance.

the high standards the company has become renowned for.

Yet these key services play an integral role in your business operations because, let’s face it, when it comes to your commercial presence, first impressions really do count.

PPCS stood out as finalists in the Education – Technical and Other Institutions category for its work on the Grafton Campus Housing at the University of Auckland.

It has been likened to the Oscars of the building industry and this year’s Building Service Contractors New Zealand (BSCNZ) CleanSweep Awards, in association with office products company Staples Advantage, didn’t disappoint. Held on May the 19th at the Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland, the event hosted more than 300 guests from the building services industry. The awards recognise the outstanding contribution of building service contractors and honours them with awards from different categories. The awards are ardently contested and meticulously judged.

For local firm PPCS, cleaning, facility management, property services, waste management and grounds maintenance is exactly what the industrious team does best. Taking the hassle out of these mundane yet integral business operations has seen PPCS formulate a nationwide presence, servicing a wide range of businesses in an equally diverse range of industries, from the education, retail and government sectors, through to the commercial, aged care and healthcare sectors. But it’s the company’s success at the recent CleanSweep Awards for 2016 which reflects

ALLBRITE SERVICES LTD

A SUPER CLEAN OPERATION

Allbrite Services awarded Lifetime Achievement Award Receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Building Services Contractors Association of New Zealand in recognition of many years in the professional cleaning business was fantastic recognition for a job well done, says Allbrite Services Ltd owner Rick Sowman. “We are dedicated to providing the highest quality services to the business community throughout New Zealand, and this is reflected in this award,” he says. “We have an excellent quality management system in place and that is why many of our clients are long-term.”

“Having clean and sanitary offices is important for staff comfort, productivity and reducing the need for sick leave.” Window Cleaning – Allbrite provides a specialist window cleaning service, from daily cleaning of the entry foyer or shop-front, to full cleaning of high-rise complexes using gantries and abseiling equipment. Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning – Allbrite has developed its own successful methods to clean and remove stains from all types of carpets and upholstery. Rick says they utilise the widely accepted deep steam extraction method and can remove virtually any stain providing they have a fair idea of what it is.

Having a great team is a big part of Allbrite’s success. All work is carried out by their dedicated team members so clients know it will be completed to a high standard.

Telephone and Computer Sanitising – Allbrite can clean all types of office equipment, including telephones, computers, keyboards, fax machines, printers and photocopiers. “Office equipment is a major point of human touch in any office, and a consistent target of our commercial cleaning services,” says Rick.

The staff all undertake full training in line with unit standards as laid down under the National Certificate in Cleaning and Caretaking. The company also employs a full-time nationallyqualified assessor who co-ordinates the training programme.

“Research has shown that bacteria can survive on a hard surface for up to three days. Bacteria are more easily spread by touching a contaminated surface than by inhaling airborne germs.”

Cleaning - A Team Effort

Full security checks are conducted on all staff and they are issued with personal photo identification cards, which they display at all times when they are working. The staff can also be identified by their attractive green and black uniforms.

Full Service Cleaning Company With teams working in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton, Allbrite’s service extends beyond cleaning to include pest control, plant hire, laundry services, and providing consumables – basically everything needed to make a workplace clean and attractive. Commercial Cleaning - A major focus of Allbrite’s service is ensuring offices, schools and other workplaces are cleaned to the highest standard. This service is vital says Rick.

“This professional service not only makes a workplace look attractive for clients, but creates an attractive working environment and is great for staff morale.” Rick says the team always work in a manner that minimises any workplace inconvenience. “They’re usually in and out without anyone noticing. All they notice is that the plants look great.” Silk Flower Arrangements – A stunning silk flower arrangement can transform a reception area, office or meeting room, without the potential allergens of fresh flowers. Allbrite’s designers can create a stunning silk flower arrangement to suit any workplace, which they change regularly to keep a fresh and vibrant perspective. Garden maintenance – An outdoor maintenance team can provide a full service for outdoor garden areas, including creating new gardens, mowing lawns, rebarking, fertilising plants, pruning and spraying.

Pest Control

Consumables – Allbrite doesn’t just clean, it replenishes all bathroom and kitchen consumables, and all sanitary supplies, so clients never run out of those little things that every office needs.

Rats, mice and other nasties should never be in a home or workplace. Allbrite will eradicate all types of insects and pests using natural, ozone-friendly products, approved by the Ministry for Primary Industries, which will not harm humans or pets.

Plants for an Attractive Workplace

Rick says it is this extensive range of services and the fullyintegrated approach taken by Allbrite that has made the company such a success.

Allbrite’s fully qualified team, led by a professional horticulturalist, can design and create a stunning indoor garden area and plant display to brighten up any workplace. Plants come from Allbrite’s own nursery and the service includes ongoing maintenance programmes designed to suit the individual workplace. Watering, fertilising and trimming is undertaken quickly and efficiently by uniformed staff, and tired plants are quickly replaced.

“Our clients really appreciate our service. It’s not only more efficient using one company, but having a fully integrated package also saves them money and the service can be tailored specifically to their individual needs.”

ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS YOU CAN COUNT ON While the painful memories of the global financial crisis recede further into the past, economic optimism continues to gain momentum, allowing us to act in anticipation of a promising future, opposed to stalling due to uncertainty. For Auckland’s Global Engineering, moving forward into a promising future is what the company is all about. And for managing director, Andrew Jackson this positive outlook is being realised in both the company’s actions, and its overview of how to conduct business. “We have a willingness to tackle jobs other companies might not touch, and with high standards of quality and attention to detail, and a vigorously competitive approach to pricing and management of resources, we have formed a solid reputation for delivering quality on time.”

A tailor made base of operations Perhaps indicative of this positive outlook, and the ability and willingness to tackle contracts others baulk at, is Global Engineering’s custom-built premises.

encompasses a variety of projects from high quality medical equipment through to food-grade stainless screw conveyors to machinery for a variety of specialised manufacturing processes. “We take a craftsman approach to everything we do, building products of the highest quality and durability. Whether its manufacturing, fitting, fabrication, finishing, coating or erection; all receive the same dedicated attention to detail ensuring we get the best possible result.”

The in-house advantage Helping to set the company apart from many of its competitors is that it does all of this, draughting included, completely in-house, enabling it to be in complete cost saving control from day one. “Just about everything we make is a one-off. That’s why we need to be very exact about what we do. We have developed an excellent system of checking work throughout the manufacturing process and we are continually working on quality assessment procedures, especially around material certification.”

The efficiently designed space is one that can grow and expand with the business.

Trucks can drive through the building and be loaded and unloaded by overhead gantry cranes, each with a capacity of 6.5 tonnes. Previously all loading was done outside with forklifts and mobile cranes.

The 1,500 square metres of workshop houses three fabrication bays, each measuring 15 by 45 metres. The building is designed to allow new bays to be added.

“Handling materials forms around 20 percent of our business, so to increase our ability to do this better and faster is a massive move forwards for us.”

The Kumeu site also gives Global Engineering 1,500 sqm of yard and storage space and a further 400 sqm of office and communal business space.

The team’s expertise does not stop when a product leaves the production line. Global Engineering has a steel erection and site installation team. “We have a high degree of flexibility and control over the delivery, erection and installation process with our own mobile cranes and truck cranes.”

Providing specialist services The vast majority of Global Engineering’s work is in commercial construction detailing, fabricating and erecting structural steel. However, the abilities of the company are diverse; its skill base

A reputation to be proud of Customer service ranks high on the list of attributes at Global Engineering. “You know you are well respected when your clients, the owners of some of Auckland’s top commercial construction companies, come to you to get structural steel when they build their own homes.” Andrew knows the superior reputation the company enjoys is based around its willingness to do difficult work. “We spend a lot of time getting to know every job and we work smart - looking

for the best solutions and then delivering everything we promise, and more.” On the structural steel work and metalwork side of the business, some of Global Engineering’s achievements include bridges, stadiums, commercial buildings, churches, high profile showrooms, high quality private homes, and all manner of ladders, stairs, walkways, balustrades and handrails. In the precision engineering side of the business, the machine shop is well equipped to handle a variety of work that has included intricate optical equipment, tunnel boring mechanisms, motor, marine, and specialised machinery - not to forget the occasional new invention.

The right fit One of the biggest challenges with structural steel and metalwork in the construction industry is ensuring the thousands of parts that make up a steel structure all fit together correctly when delivered to site. Recognising the need to stay at the forefront of the industry, Global Engineering invested in specialised draughting software systems. In addition to having their own in-house design and draughting team, it utilises an integrated management software as the basis of its robust quality control system. “All incoming information, from both the architectural and engineering specifications, including the client’s timeline and required delivery sequence, is fed into the management software. Our highly skilled draftsmen then translate this into the 3D models and the comprehensive shop drawings for manufacturing to follow.” Jackson says in the background the software automatically produces and updates all the relevant data required for quality control throughout the model adjustments. “Consequently, every part of the process is closely monitored from initial inquiry through drafting, fabrication and finishing to delivery and installation onsite.”

The Design and build process enables you to have a completely unique home designed for you

It’s an ideal place for families because of the good schools in the area, but it’s also great for anyone wanting a relaxing lifestyle because of the fabulous fishing and local beaches. - STEPHEN TORDEICH, DIRECTOR

Landmark Homes Counties is involved in building homes in the new development, Kahawai Point in Glenbrook. It is conveniently located 20 minutes from the Papakura motorway on-ramp for access to Auckland and Hamilton, and an easy drive to Waiuku and Pukekohe. Stephen says it is attracting a great deal of interest because of the premium sections with beautiful trees, wetlands plantings and breathtaking water views. “It’s an ideal place for families because of the good schools in the area, but it’s also great for anyone wanting a relaxing lifestyle because of the fabulous fishing and local beaches.”

Land and house packages The company has house and land packages available in the Kahawai Point Glenbrook development, along with Wentworth Estate in Waiuku and Vineyard Road Estate in Te Kauwhata.

These packages are designed to simplify the process of getting clients into their new homes. The benefits of this option means the home design is chosen to best suit the section. Colours can then be selected by the client to customise to the home owner’s personal requirements.

They will remove the old house and rebuild a new one, so the owner gets the best of both worlds. This process is made all the easier as demolition or house removal, council consents and the build can all be dealt with by Landmark Homes' team of professionals. AT

House of the Year Awards | Manon Developments

A stunning showpiece Manon Developments’ stunning Greenhithe home caught the judges’ eyes in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year 2016 competition, because the high level of craftsmanship and stylish finishing made it a stunning showpiece.

The building company took out the coveted silver award in the Auckland/Northland $1 million - $2 million category. It was Manon Developments’ first entry in the House of the Year Awards and company director Graham Malins says they were quietly confident that it would be an award winner. “We knew it was a beautiful home. We had a great architect and we’ve got top-rate builders and a great team who have a passion for quality and design.” He says the team found the award winning home a real pleasure to work on. “The team take real pride in all their work. They all pay meticulous attention to detail and bring passion to the job; this is one of the reasons the house stood out.” The judges were wowed by the home which is a showpiece of contemporary living. They described it as “sure to earn glowing reviews from anyone who lays eyes on it, let alone steps through the door”. The two-level stylish residence has been positioned to take full advantage of the wonderful views of the Upper Harbour. With an artful blend of honed bricks, vertical cedar and white Nu-Wall, each room has been beautifully detailed and finished with tremendous attention. The exterior makes a grand statement with the inviting waters of the swimming pool, extensive alfresco options and widespread use of glazing, which blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living areas. Moving indoors only intensifies the viewer’s admiration. Exquisitely detailed rooms bask in all day sun, views can be seen at every turn and the stylish interior beautifully captures an open and airy feel.

Glass stackers open up to the deck and the deck acts as another room of the house, thanks to the automated Kudos Louvre roofing system.

On the ground floor the expansive lounge/ entertainment space features views of the harbour through two walls of glass stackers. This room flows through to the glass-fenced patio and 8x4m concrete heated pool.

The well designed state of the art kitchen and spacious scullery make the home perfect for family life, but it would be equally suitable for professionals and people who love to entertain. Eye-catching marble has been used in the kitchen and bathroom floors and walls, giving a unique, stylish finish. There’s a bedroom, bathroom and an office/ fifth bedroom on the top floor, along with a

luxurious master suite with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. Two more bedrooms and another full bathroom are located downstairs, along with the laundry and an internal double garage access. This award winning home is not the only outstanding house built by Manon Developments. During his 25 plus years in the building industry, Graham Malins has project managed the building of countless homes throughout Auckland. Manon Developments doesn’t just build premier houses. They build a full range of houses, from affordable family homes up to architecturally designed million dollar homes and everything in between. Graham says the team brings the same high level of workmanship and attention to detail to every jobthat they brought to their award wining home.

For the team, building beautiful homes is more than just a job, is it something they all take immense pride in. While the award recognises their high level of craftsmanship, it is knowing that they have many satisfied customers throughout Auckland that is the real reward. Manon Developments is now looking ahead to next year’s awards. After winning silver with their first entry they are inspired to take out a gold next year. House of the Year Awards | David Reid Homes

Triple treat for David Reid Homes The David Reid Homes Counties franchise thrives on building innovative, out of the box designs that challenge the team to push the boundaries of construction. It’s what makes the company’s offering such a strong one, with designs highly sought after by those looking for a quality bespoke home that stands out as much for its striking aesthetics as for its creative functionality. “The product we deliver is bespoke, one-off designs each time, with every element worked through with the client to achieve the best results for their budget,” David Reid Homes director Brendon Hamill explains. “We can consistently compete with independent builders with an exceptionally high standard finish, but with the business structure of a group homes builder, which enables us to deal with council plans and consenting which an independent builder doesn’t traditionally provide.” The company’s recent success at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards for 2016 supports this assertion, with the David Reid Homes Counties franchise taking out a gold award in the Nulook New Home $650,000 $1 million category for a four bedroom Flat Bush home, another gold award in the same

Karaka Lakes Nulook New Home $650,000 - $1 million Gold Award With light-filled living spaces, lake views and luxury features, this four bedroom Karaka Lakes home has been clad in vertical shiplap, framed by bold black lines, while internally wooden floors flow throughout, echoing the exterior. “The clients love wood, so this has become a key feature both inside and outside the house,” Brendon says.

Despite a number of parameters to work within to meet the demands of the subdivision’s covenants, the company was able to take the hassle out of the building process for the client, with the resulting home bringing together all of her ideas. “The ideas that came to the project were the client’s. Flat Bush Nulook New Home $650,000 - $1 million Gold Award This four bedroom Flat Bush home with triple garaging offers its owners a unique architectural design with contemporary class and comfort both inside and out. “The client approached us to design something unique,” Brendon says.

“They had a difficult site to work with. It was by no means flat and there were a number of council regulations to work within.” “We managed to deliver a design that really suited the clients, something completely out of the box that was very different to any other group builder who was competing for the project, which is ultimately what won us the job, along with the fact that we weren’t phased by the site.”

Sea views Carters $1 million - $2 million Silver Award A unique mix of concrete-tilt panel and Accoya timber cladding lends an elegance to this contemporary home that is simple and in perfect harmony with the landscape. Though, just quietly, as one of his favourite designs the silver award was somewhat bittersweet for Brendon. “So much thought has gone into this project to achieve what was delivered and that planning came together in the execution,” he says.

“It’s not only a beautiful home, but it’s a well designed and well executed project. “Importantly, all three of these projects were delivered on time and to the high level we expect from every single project, without the hassles many have come to expect from the construction industry. “That’s important to us. Our clients are investing in luxury items and we want to make that process as enjoyable as it can possibly be for them.”

Residential and commercial project specialists KN Building is working hard to supply the Auckland housing market with high quality townhouses and commercial premises. While the company has built high-spec homes for individual customers, it primarily works for property developers, building large scale housing developments in South Auckland. Business development manager, Jeremy Ryu, says KN Building is a project management company with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

The large team at KN Building takes a proactive approach to its work, staying in constant touch with customers and striving to service their individual needs in a timely and cost-effective manner. The company has a huge wealth of industry knowledge and helps guide clients from the preliminary design stage right through to project completion. It has a range of its own pre-designed plans to choose from or can help clients design from scratch. “We deal more with developers than individual home owners,” Jeremy says. “Developers are focused on quality and are concerned about

We are able to commit to the speed of construction, quality and price before building starts.” KN Building employs about 30 staff, who mainly work as project managers, and subcontracts its building labour. “Each of our townhouse projects can be 32-50 houses,” says Jeremy. “We produce about 100 houses a year and have built houses for Housing New Zealand.” In addition, KN Building does interior shop fitouts and completes commercial and education projects, including Waipa Childcare Centre and Cambridge Academy in Albany.

The company was formed in 2012 to provide clients with solutions to all their building needs, through an honest, hands-on service from start to finish.

The team at KN Building places a large emphasis on:

It provides transportable PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulated panel house and school buildings, which are typically produced as a foam and are self-sustained without structural framing. This building method significantly reduces construction time.

This was KN Building’s first ever entry into the awards and Jeremy says the company is thrilled with its success.

As the official builders for the winners of season one of The Block NZ, and being the recent recipient of the supreme award for renovation at the House of the Year Awards, Haven Renovations has to be one of Auckland’s leading construction companies. Owner Ray Sale established Haven Renovations with wife Tracey back in 2005, upon returning to New Zealand from an eight year stint travelling and working overseas. Ray had been managing high-end residential construction in London and wanted to introduce to the local market the same degree of innovation and expertise he’d just experienced. Originally known as Having Building Concepts, the husband and wife duo set out to provide unsurpassed quality of craftsmanship and highend construction to those throughout the greater Auckland region. The team has since grown and they’ve since completed more than 130 renovations and new builds ranging in size, scope, budget and requirements for more than 100 clients. They’re proud of the superior standard of work they produce right through to completion, which continues to be recognised with awards and accolades as well as repeat customers and word of mouth referrals. This, in an industry that’s flooded with both young-gun and long-established building companies is an admirable feat. The mission at Haven Renovations is to offer “complete building renovation services that will take the stress and pressure of construction away from our clients and will see your project completed on time, to budget, and to the highest of standards”.

CREATE A CLEAR VISION with Glass Vice

Central to this is offering services that cater to a range of unique individual needs, and on that note, they’re one of Auckland’s leading

builders of pre-fabricated SIPs (structural insulated panels) homes. “Providing complete freedom, each panel is precision cut then locked together to create an incredibly well-insulated home. “With a seamless 4-5 R-Rating, these homes have a much warmer and drier indoor environment, and combined with smart-home functions and automation, home owners experience unparalleled ease of living with the added bonus of reduced long-term running costs.” Building a home that fits your budget yet impresses amongst a 21st century landscape doesn’t have to be as complicated as you might think. Teamwork a key to company’s success The company name is a composite of their initials and that reflects the closeness of their operation. Mick King and Rob Howdill set up Miro Construction in 2009 as a company dedicated to excellence in construction. Covering predominantly education, commercial, hospitality and retail, Miro has built its reputation as a company offering quality professional service. Between them Mick and Rob have worked in almost every sector of construction, from residential building through education and public sector projects to major refurbishments and fitouts. “Mick and I had both worked for other companies,” says Director Rob Howdill. “In fact I’ve been in the construction industry since I was 16. When I came to New Zealand from the UK 10 years ago and met Mick, it just seemed the serendipitous moment to form our own company.

Miro Construction employs some 20 staff in its office and on site. Rob is proud of the fact that both his sons have followed him into the building industry through apprenticeships within Miro Construction and the company works alongside the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation in employing and supporting other apprentices into the industry.

The centre was set on driven piles to reduce the amount of soil that had to be removed from the site and is constructed mainly of sliding glass walls with a continuous Kwila deck and veranda around the outside. “The veranda looks rather like the underside of an umbrella and all the glass gives a wonderfully spacious and open feel taking full advantage of the view to a boundary stream and nearby golf course.” Rob adds that despite issues with the wet spring and timely access to sub-contractors the build went to programme and was extremely satisfying. “The clients were very happy and excited with the outcome and so we couldn’t help but feel that way too.” AT Miro Construction Ltd 2 - 6 Saturn Place Rosedale Auckland T (09) 415 6476 E rob@miropm.co.nz www.miropm.co.nz

The clients Rob refers to are Blockwork Developments and Phil Smith of CASA Architects. The build was a 760sqm childcare centre including a cafe, begun in February 2016 and completed in November.

Property & Construction | Insultech Insulation

Insultech – making homes healthy For too many years New Zealand’s predominantly European-style timber-framed houses let in draughts and allowed heat to escape. By the 1940s the ceilings and walls of over 50 percent of new dwellings contained mould and researchers concluded that the solution was to increase both thermal insulation and ventilation. Until the early 1960s however, all house insulation material had to be imported and so in practice this was available only to wealthy or knowledgeable builders and owners, and it was not until 1978 that the level of thermal insulation required in new houses was specified by law. Nowadays the benefits of home insulation are far more appreciated; heating and cooling account for 50 – 70 percent of the energy consumed in the average home. Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste. “Last year the Government announced new rules requiring landlords to ensure their rental properties, many of which are older houses, are insulated by July 2019,” says Stephen Nicolson of Insultech Insulation. “Some 180,000 privately tenanted rental properties are likely to require retrofitting of insulation and that is our specialty.”

Since then the company has grown at a rapid pace and is now able to provide not only Auckland with the very best of insulation products, but other parts of the country as well. “I bought the company in 2014 after having worked across all aspects of the business for several years. My goal has been to expand our service into the Waikato region, Taranaki, the Bay of Plenty and Dunedin.

• Professional certified installation of insulation

Insultech Insulation’s top product is CosyWall: a multi-purpose product designed to provide effective thermal and acoustical insulation for existing water-tight external timber-framed wall cavities, fibre cement, plywood or sealed masonry veneer claddings.

• Recommendation regarding existing insulation • Removal service for undesirable old insulation or damp insulation • Existing wall insulation

It is a durable dry-blown insulation system that is retrofitted into existing walls, eliminating the costly and time-consuming process of removing claddings to then install insulation.

• Roof insulation • Floor insulation.

To insulate ceilings Insultech supply Jet Steam Max, a very high quality wool insulation system. It is the only blown insulation used to insulate New Zealand roof attics that has no added formaldehyde and is non-combustible, clean and durable. It is superior to batting or blanket, as it covers the full ceiling including over and under timber joists, and it is especially convenient for hard to access parts of roof spaces. The third signature product in Insultech’s range is Warmafloor. This is a polyester fibre blanket manufactured specifically for placing between floor joists against the underside of the floor. The rolls of material are uniquely sized to facilitate handling in confined sub-floor spaces and can be torn readily to suit joist length. “Another service we provide is removal of existing insulation from accessible roof attics or sub-floor cavities, because the insulation may have rotted, become infested with insects or may simply need to be replaced during renovations.”

Property & Construction | PBF

Introducing the year’s Residential Master Painter Winning Residential Master Painter of the Year 2016 is another feather in the cap for successful painting and Gib stopping company PBF Ltd. Company owner Arjen Bloem says the award, which recognises workmanship and attention to detail, is the result of having systems in place that ensure excellence in standard, consistently striving to improve, and having a great team of tradesmen.

“We came runner up last year and that propelled the team forward. We got really excited and determined to win. The team that won this year are different to the guys who got runner up last year, so it shows there is a consistently high standard across the company.” The company also recently won the Westpac Excellence in Customer Service Delivery. This award reflected the company’s commitment to constantly improving the service it delivers. “We consistently drive forward in the standard of painting and the standard of service,” Arjen says. “We have systems in place around how we deliver our service and are always looking at how we can improve.”

After each job is completed PBF provides the customer with a 12 question survey so they can rate the workmanship and service. The entire team then discuss these results to see what areas can be improved. Arjen says this means the company never gets complacent, but is constantly looking at ways to drive forward to deliver a first-rate product to every customer. When Arjen started the company in 2007, his objective was to have PBF known as New Zealand’s premier painting and plasterboard company. These recent awards prove that he is well and truly on his way to achieving that goal. The company now has around 3,000 satisfied customers, mostly in central Auckland, including

Herne Bay, Remuera, St Helliers and Devonport. Much of their work comes from word of mouth recommendations, says Arjen. “We sometimes end up completing five or six jobs on the same street because satisfied clients recommend us to their neighbours.” The company’s confidence in its work is reflected in its 10 year written guarantee, which far exceed industry standards. This guarantee does not just cover the workmanship. PBF has a commitment to working on time and to budget. “Our team is 100 percent committed to being in on time, out on time, every time. We will start and complete the work in the agreed timeframe.”

Property & Construction | Stehr Brothers

Three decades of quality craftsmanship Adaptability and versatility have been the keys to Stehr Brothers longevity in the construction business. In an industry where companies come and go like ships passing in the night, Stehr Brothers have been operating for more than 30 years at the top of their game because of the diversity of their areas of expertise. The Stehr Brothers' business partnership began in 1985, when Wok Stehr returned to New Zealand, after living for a number of years on Norfolk Island, to join his brother Don in a new family enterprise. This dynamic duo have now been working together for over three decades. The mid-1980s was an exciting time to be involved in the construction industry. The economy was strong and the company was able to tackle a variety of projects gaining wide experience across the construction sector. Their reputation as a dependable quality construction company grew throughout the Auckland region.

With changes in legislation and the industry becoming more accountable, Stehr Brothers began to diversify - an approach they continue to this day. From the outset they were known for their expertise in building high-end architecturallydesigned homes. “We normally have at least one of these types of builds underway and have done so for the past 20 years,” says Wok Stehr. “But we also challenged ourselves with entirely different types of projects outside the norm in order to keep our workforce employed.” Those new areas of work include seismic/ earthquake strengthening of a number of Auckland’s commercial buildings, such as banks and supermarkets.

The team at Stehr Brothers has the skills and knowledge to handle all aspects of this type of work, from the foundations to the actual structure of a building. Stehr Brothersis also now an expert in small/ mid-size civil projects and infrastructure. For example, trenching for power and drainage in new sub-divisions, and they are involved with tilt panel commercial construction and multiuse retail and apartment complexes, as well as residential renovations.

Property & Construction | AC Roofing

A decade on top Roofing contractors tend to be something of a fearless breed. Alistar Barton of AC Roofing is no exception, but his courage and daring comes from the experience and skill gained over more than two decades in the roofing industry. It’s matched with an irrepressible sense of humour and a deep Christian commitment to integrity in his business. “About 21 years ago I hadn’t really determined what I wanted to do with my life when a cousin of mine phoned to ask if I might give him a hand with a roofing job. I found that it was easier than I thought it would be and that I really enjoyed the work.” From that chance opportunity, Alistar developed his expertise through working as a subcontractor to become fully certified and ticketed for long-run roofing before establishing his own company AC Roofing in 2006. He’s now celebrating 10 years in business. “We’re a family company – my wife and I as directors and my brother, who is our business manager. I’m still the one on the tools as that is what gives me the most satisfaction. Working with my hands comes naturally for me and I relish the challenges of analysing any problems on a roofing job and finding the way to resolve those issues.” AC Roofing are specialists in long run colour steel and tin roofing, as well as trapezial rib roofing, clip sheet roofing and translucent clear light sheeting. They also install Onuldine, a bituminous corrugated roofing. So their expertise covers the whole gamut of materials from iron to acrylic and polycarbonate and they work in both the residential and light commercial sectors. ”Since we began our business we have worked on some high profile projects. At Vector Arena we laid 50 metre sheets of long-run colour steel and then craned them up to the roof in packs. That was a bit of fun. “At Ericsson Stadium we installed a large amount of steel roofing at considerable height. For that project we had safety nets underneath us for protection, while on some of the high rise buildings projects we’ve done, we’ve been working off swinging stages.

It’s all a bit like being a trapeze artist and this kind of work is not for the fainthearted or someone with a fear of heights. - ALISTAR BARTON, OWNER OF AC ROOFING

“It’s all a bit like being a trapeze artist and this kind of work is not for the fainthearted or someone with a fear of heights.” For Alistar the quality of his company’s workmanship is crucial as well as honesty, transparency and a desire to treat people fairly. He instils this ethic into his staff. “I believe that if you treat people fairly you will be treated fairly in return. I’ve trained more than 30 roofers over the years and I hope I have sent

them out into their own businesses with this same approach.” AT AC Roofing 454 Glenbrook Beach Road RD1 Waiuku Auckland 2681 M 021 912 283 E ally@acroofing.co.nz E sales@acroofing.co.nz www.acroofing.co.nz

Property & Construction | Sentinel Homes Warkworth

Homes designed and built to meet any family’s needs Brent Gilchrist has been in the building industry since he was 13 and worked for a number of brand name building companies, including Fletchers and Sentinel Homes. So when the opportunity came up to purchase the Sentinel Homes Warkworth Matakana franchise, he jumped at the opportunity. “Sentinel Homes is a design and build housing company,” Brent explains. “So while many other companies utilise standard plans and are very restrictive in what they can build, we can customise a home to create exactly what our clients want and need. Our tagline says it all really; ‘design, build, enjoy’.”

living areas facing north, high rating insulation values and other features all help build a more sustainable house.”

“The difference between us and a lot of other companies is that we start with a blank piece of paper. We create a plan specifically for you. So rather than starting with a book that has 100 generic plans, we look at the site, where the sun is and what your needs are.”

A video on the Sentinel Homes' website outlines the ease of building with the company, which all begins with a meeting to take a brief of what you want in a home, before a quantity surveyor puts together a high level estimate.

Interestingly, one of the first questions the company will ask is ‘how old are any children?’ “This seems like an odd question,” Brent says, “but we do build for a lot of families. “Generally speaking if the children are under 10, the clients will prefer all the bedrooms to be grouped together at one end of the house, when there are teenagers in the house, the preference is for rooms to be separated. “With building companies that offer standard plans, generally you’ll find all the bedrooms are grouped together and that doesn’t always suit.” Building for families is what Sentinel Homes does best, and realising this, they have got in behind The Parenting Place (www.theparentingplace. com) as a significant sponsor. “We all want the best for our families,” Brent says. “And The Parenting Place can help us achieve this.” Sustainable design features also form an integral part of the house plans. “It’s very important to build to the sun,” he says. “It’s a cheap energy supply and a lighter home always feels happier and warmer. Designing to the sun really does make a big difference to a house and, because we are designing from scratch, we can make that happen. Wide eaves,

Brent is supported by a strong team of four that operate from an office in the local Warkworth area. The Warkworth franchise has a sevenstar rated show home opening later this year in Matakana Village, just north of the city. “We will be looking to expand the company in time, but quality and a strong team are the most important mandates and we won’t grow at the expense of those. “It’s a great feeling to be able to walk past and see something you’ve created with your own hands. You’re leaving a legacy that you can drive past in 10 years’ time,” he says. “It’s also the opportunity to change people’s lives. We hand over houses all the time where people are just ecstatic to be there. That’s a really neat feeling.” AT Sentinel Homes Warkworth 20 Baxter Street Warkworth Auckland T 029 773 6486 E brent.g@sentinelhomes.co.nz www.sentinelhomes.co.nz

Property & Construction | JCC Enterprises

A passion for perfect building John Cran took a year off work as a self-employed builder, going so far as to change his mobile number so he wasn’t distracted while building his dream home; a 12-14 month process from design to completion, including demolition of the previous building. It’s this passion, dedication and attention to detail which has seen his company – JCC Enterprises – become the name behind a number of striking new homes throughout Auckland during the past 10 years. The Dingle Road, St Heliers home – which operates as a show home for the company – features solar power, with any excess stored in batteries, ensuring there is always access to free power. The solar power will only be fed out to the grid once the home’s demands have been met and the batteries are at full capacity.

Extensive use of glass in the north facing areas of the house lets more light into the home, with heat stored in the home’s tiles. The cavity separating the two panels of glass in the double glazing windows is filled with argon which can improve a double glazed window’s energy rating by more than 30 percent. “There is very little need for heating,” John says. “It’s all very controllable, letting a certain amount of heat through so it doesn’t get too hot or cold.” Sustainable Western Red Cedar on the exterior has a zero carbon footprint, while concrete block won’t require any maintenance. Goods & Services | Lloyd Electrical

When teamwork comes up trumps When John Lloyd set up Lloyd Electrical in 1992 he was unlikely to have been aware of how sophisticated and complex the work of an electrician would become by 2016.

As Dave says, “We can install every single cable that goes into a building from lighting, power and security. It’s what we term a full turnkey solution.” Lloyd Electrical now has some 40 staff working across the range of their disciplines: commercial, residential and servicing. In keeping with their up-to-date technology in other areas, their fleet of 22 service vehicles are all tracked through the Navman system meaning accurate time keeping and greater efficiency from the service department for customers. That’s especially crucial when they offer servicing and maintenance Auckland-wide.

It’s not merely a matter of wiring, lighting and putting power sockets in place. In line with so much today, computers, electronics and sustainability play massive roles in the work of an electrical firm. Lloyd Electrical has developed its expertise during the years, first with John Lloyd and then with Dave Clasby, originally John’s contract manager and now the general manager of the company. Along with John’s son Mike, the firm’s estimator, and Adam While the service department manager, they are a formidable team proud of the work they have done over t he years and of the reputation they have earned; a company that delivers outstanding results on time and on budget. Commercial electrical services have long been Lloyd Electrical’s core business. Large companies such as The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, Countdown, Mainfreight and National Mini Storage have benefited from their skill and knowledge in finding the best electrical solutions

Lloyd Electrical is a member of the Electrical Contractors Association with its workmanship guarantee. AT Lloyd Electrical 19 William Pickering Drive Rosedale Auckland 0632 T (09) 415 7075 to add value to each business, as well as in creating electrical design and build installations for commercial premises. “We work closely with Advanced Lighting Technologies on design and build projects. It’s something that our skill base is particularly

suited to and that makes us a bit different,” Dave says.

In high demand at the moment for large companies are commercial lighting refits, replacing traditional incandescent lamps with high-efficiency LED lighting systems. “This work is a significant part of our current operation. The energy savings for businesses using LED lighting is massive. The quality of the lighting is also much better and there is less maintenance. In addition we can ensure that the lighting can be remotely controlled through automated computer systems.” That sort of terminology might have sent John Lloyd into a tailspin, but that is not all the 21st century technology that Lloyd Electrical is involved with. They can install AV systems, camera systems and security systems as well as all the electrical wiring and components for refrigeration systems.

Goods & Services | DC Weld

Experts at putting the pieces together Much of local firm DC Weld’s work is picked up through word of mouth, with the company taking on many of its contracts when other contractors fall behind, holding up work sites. “Our quality of work really sets us apart and we guarantee our workmanship,” managing director Ron Barry explains. “While other companies might offer a cheaper rate, sometimes their products end up failing and often we are called in to complete the work.” Such was the case with the company’s previous involvement in the Victoria Park Tunnel project. The final link in the NZ Transport Agency’s Central Motorway Improvement (CMI) initiatives, the Victoria Park Tunnel upgrade was designed to address the bottleneck on the Auckland motorway system between Newmarket and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, for the 150,000 vehicles a day which travel the route. “One welding company had been working on a particular job approximately two weeks and when their work was tested the day before the concrete trucks were due in, the work failed,” Ron says. “The main contractor called us in to remedy the welds and, in one day, still managed to get the works completed in time for the concrete pour – most importantly, all our work passed testing.” When the Vector Arena’s highly complex and extremely large roof with its twin curved planes started sagging, DC Weld was engaged by the main contractor to assist three other welding companies. By putting a crew on day shift and another crew on night shift, the modifications were completed on time. “Due to our high weld test pass rate and superior quantities achieved, the other welding companies were let go and we were kept on until the very end of the project.

“On several occasions we have worked all through the night, weekends included, on the main diggers at quarries which supply the product to the crushing plant. We have worked around the clock to get the machines back into operation regardless of the weather,” Ron says. “We’re very dependable, we will get the work done and to the highest quality doing whatever it takes to get the job done. We can offer a 24/7 service – though I’m not sure we should promote that,” he laughs of the long hours the crew sometimes have to take on for emergency repairs. It’s this flexibility and workmanship which has seen the company involved in a diverse range of projects, from small fabrication and welding jobs through to custom fabrication and welding

services for large projects and offering a mobile service in addition to the Auckland workshop. Ron’s son Joseph, a company director who is also on the tools, is currently working on a water delivery tanker. “This is specialised work involving stainless steel welding,” Ron says. “We can fix or maintain machinery including carbon steel and alloys, pumps, bases and piping.” A previous project was a $47 million cement storage terminal on the Ports of Auckland for Golden Bay Cement known as Project Eastport, a fully automated 25,000 tonne storage and load out facility. “Again we displaced other welding companies and worked on to the very end,” Ron says.

We’re very dependable, we will get the work done and to the highest quality doing whatever it takes to get the job done. We can offer a 24/7 service – though I’m not sure we should promote that.

Goods & Services | DC Weld A team effort DC Weld has been supported by a number of loyal businesses during the years, with Weld IT and PPS Industries two of the loyal suppliers which have played a key role in the company’s ongoing success. “Weld IT is one of our welding consumable suppliers,” Ron says. “The owners used to work elsewhere and when they started Weld IT I was one of their first and biggest customers. I like working with people that know what they’re talking about because when we order product, it has to be right and we need to maintain that quality, which is what we get from Weld IT.”

most of my team have been with DC Weld for 12-16 years, so it is obvious that their safety and wellbeing are paramount to our culture. “We’ve worked all over the place and we have undertaken up to 15 different jobs in one day. We’re very versatile.” There’s even an exciting new project in the pipelines which is currently in prototype stage after 12 months of product development. It involves a world famous carver who can “turn blocks of wood into $150,000 carvings” and Ron says the new product will see ongoing demand from artists and sculptors globally. But that’s about all that can be said at this stage.

DC Weldhas been engaged in New Zealand’s longest tunnel and motorway project – the $1.6 billion Waterview Connection since the project began in 2011, offering onsite certified procedural welding and heat bending to reinforce bars, amongst other things, and fabricating components for the project from their workshop. “We also do work for Fulton Hogan, who are in charge of repairs and maintenance of the Auckland motorways and over-bridges. When they’ve had accidents such as excavators on transporter trucks hitting and damaging the underside of bridges, we’ve worked overnight to complete the repairs,” Ron adds. In fact, on two occasions, DC Weld has been repairing the motorway bridges at night and repairing the very machines that hit the bridges in our workshop during the day.

bulldozers, dump trucks etc. We also do LT400 certified repairs to road trucks for their COF including re-decking the trays and repairing damaged tailgates. In fact, we have completed seven in the last month,” Ron says. “Many of our long-term customers depend on us to get their machinery back into operation as soon as possible.” The company is also involved in foundation pile welding for civil engineering companies, work which requires precise quality control, as failed weld tests are costly, not only to the company, but also to its customers and DC Weld is proud of its very high success rate. “There is only one thing that we hold above our commitment to our customers and that is safety and we have a proven track record in both areas,” Ron says.

“We have many smaller civil engineering “I believe one of the secrets to a successful companies as our clients. We repair their diggers, business is having a good team around you and

DC Weld became a registered company in 2000, leasing properties during the initial years before building a purpose-built workshop facility at 7 Markedo Place, Papakura, 12 years ago. It features a full suite of machining and milling equipment, lathes and presses, and gantry cranes, ensuring the ability to build “just about anything”.

PPS Industries supplies the company’s grinding disks and cutting saw blades, among a wide range of engineering consumables. “The service we get from PPS Industries’ salesman is phenomenal and, as a result, we’ve been getting our consumables from them for about 7-8 years.”

And, much like Ron followed his own father into the engineering industry, Ron’s son Joseph is now following him. Ron is planning on handing the reins of the business over to the next generation in the coming years. Goods & Services | EAL Electric

Delivering electrical perfection Being in business for three decades is an extraordinary accomplishment and one that rightly deserves to be celebrated - EAL Electric is doing just that. As husband and wife managers, Warren and Jan Tait, along with their team, raise a glass to their many years in business it is an appropriate time to reflect on a careers hard work and achievements. It was in June 1986 when Warren established the business, known at the time as Electrics Afloat; since then it has flourished from a one-man-band to a fully staffed operation. Three decades later and the milestone marks some massive achievements, including having been involved in over 200 superyacht refits, as well as some of the world’s highest profile campaigns and race yachts. The long list of projects includes Sir Peter Blake’s catamaran ENZA, Whitbread and Volvo Ocean race yachts, Atlantic row boats and famous luxury yachts such as Shenandoah, Zenji, and Athena. Their profession has also taken them overseas on numerous occasions to the Mediterranean, Florida, Hawaii and across the South Pacific.

into the commercial and residential electrical lighting sectors. Auckland is known globally in the superyacht industry as one of the best places in the world for important vessel refits and up-grades. Arguably EAL Electric has been instrumental in establishing and maintaining this reputation.

Mastering the craft The journey started for Warren at the Devonport naval dockyard where he gained an apprenticeship in the electrical industry. He stayed there for a total of nine years before moving to the Ministry of Works. It was there where he was inspired to break out on his own and start the business. “I had no cliental, I basically just got a van sign written and waited for the phone to ring and fortunately it did. We quickly got busy doing marine work and the rest is history,” Warren says.

Excellence in innovation has evolved over three decades as the team has adapted their services across an extensive range of vessels including trailer boats, commercial boats, classic yachts, research vessels, and everything in between.

During the 30 years in business EAL Electric has seen a lot of change in the business and throughout the industry. In its early years, its workload was completely locally based, today about 90 percent of its marine work is re-fits on international vessels.

But the business is no longer just known for its work in the marine sector having now diversified

“Our work is on foreign flagged vessels such as luxury yachts and sailing yachts that are

Industry testimonials “Their culture of technical professionalism and co-operation remains without doubt their foundation for success and we are delighted to be associated with them. predominantly built in Europe and owned and registered overseas. Yacht management companies support these boats into Auckland for the specific purpose of cruising chartering and refitting them. New Zealand is very well respected and known for quality refits,” he says. “It’s really rewarding to see how far we’ve come,” Jan says, “from our small beginnings as one man working from the back of his van.” Warren often jokes he’s had a hand in training the majority of the marine electricians in the industry, but in all honesty it isn’t far from the truth she says.
