“Curved furniture, curved walls, curved ends of kitchen islands and vanities; curves were everywhere at the international design fairs this year so we will be seeing a lot more of them.”
ins and outs 2025

Interior design is embracing warmth, individuality, and creativity in 2025, shifting away from stark minimalism toward inviting, personality-filled spaces. From colourwashed walls and rich, earthy tones to the power of well-planned lighting and bold, statement pieces, three designers give their input. Discover what’s in and out as we look ahead to an exciting year in home design.
Which trends are in for 2025?
Interior designer Zane Tate says that using one paint colour across the board is in. He adds that a colour wash over an entire room –walls, ceilings, and trims included – makes a room feel larger and taller. He says whole rooms being wallpapered and feature ceilings in wallpaper are also in.
Finally, in for 2025 is curves.
“Curved furniture, curved walls, curved ends of kitchen islands and vanities; curves were everywhere at the international design fairs this year so we will be seeing a lot more of them,” Zane says.
The team at interior design studio Hello Saturday have noticed a shift away from white into more warmer tones. “Greens and burgundy reds are still strong colours; the use of natural colours and drawing the natural environment into the home is important,” they add.
“While we don’t strictly follow trends at Hello Saturday and instead create unique and interesting homes our clients love, we believe that we are moving into a season of change in interiors and colour, pattern, and texture are strong trends of 2025.
Laura Heynike, senior interior designer and owner of Pocketspace Interiors, is focused on the power of lighting for 2025.
“We are focused on how lighting - both natural and artificial - can increase our enjoyment of an interior.
“Homeowners quite often accept light fittings as a generic product to roll out through the whole space when we should be designing specifically for different zones. This will help us prioritise well-being, creating healthier, more inviting spaces.
“You will see lighting play a much larger role as it does not require full-scale renovation but can instantly enhance a lounge wall display or hallway in the evening. Technology is very much becoming an integral part of everyday interior design.”
Which trends are out for 2025?
Minimalism is out for 2025.
Hello Saturday rarely see white kitchens and stark white walls these days. Zane Tate agrees, going further to say the minimalist showhome aesthetic is out.
“Homes should reflect the people who live in them! Your interiors
“Homes should reflect the people who live in them! Your interiors should be full of pieces that you have collected them over years, not matchy matchy and so generic you can’t tell who lives in the home.”
should be full of pieces that you have collected them over years, not matchy matchy and so generic you can’t tell who lives in the home,” he says.
“The boring stripped-back palettes are a reflection of the dusty year we have all had!” says Laura Heynike. “Much more courageous palettes and patterns are exciting us again in drapery; not another grey sofa.”
Zane also says downlights are down and out. “Why are we still putting four downlights in a room when we can layer lighting with pendants, wall sconces, and lamps?
“We can use lights to change how a room feels and alter it at different times of day. We will see more uplighting which bathes a room in soft light, and lighting around the edges of the room to wash down the walls.”
What has surprised you about design trends in 2024?
Hello Saturday is surprised that the timber kitchen trend has continued on strong and has no sign of slowing down. “While the colours of timber have moved to warmer tones, there is still a strong oak love driven by clients.”
The arch trend is what has surprised Laura. “It’s a lovely feature but only suitable in a very small number of homes. Still, people could have a piece of it, whether it was an archshaped mirror or decorative vase if they couldn’t commit to it architecturally.”
Zane has been pleasantly surprised by the return of bold colour. I love using colour in my designs and layering tones and textures. This year, people have been adopting this in a much larger way, moving away from all-white interiors, and seeking rich colours and moody tones in their homes.”
The wonderful world of
wallpaper
Decorating a room or an entire house is a job full of ideas, research and decisions. Even just sorting out the walls can be an entire task on its own.
There are two main options when covering walls; paint and wallpaper. Artist and owner of Maggie Lam Fabric and Wallpaper, Maggie Lam, says although the paint is inexpensive and easy to apply, it’s less durable and sometimes less diverse than wallpaper.
“Wallpaper comes with different colours, prints, patterns and textures,” says Maggie. “It adds depth, character and style to your home. It makes the room less boring and more memorable.
“Wallpaper drives attention and adds character to the room. A wallpaper with pictorial patterns is always the star of the show and would be the focal point of the room. It would create conversation for you and your guests.”
Not to mention, wallpaper has come a long way in the last few years. Maggie says that there are so many designs; there’s something out there for everyone. “With the help of
technology and the development of digital printing, you can find wallpaper with various designs in limitless colour options,” she says.
Wallpaper has a wealth of variety and diversity due to being able to match the appearance of looks such as tile, herringbone, brick, timber and much more. Different materials used in the making of wallpaper also impact its durability and look.
Maggie says there’s a huge variety of options such as heavyduty vinyl, grass cloth, jute, non-woven paper and more. She says that different print bases of wallpapers are suited and serve different environments and interior spaces.
“I love wallpaper made of natural materials like grass, cork, wood, bamboo or mica minerals. These types of wallpapers don’t contain harmful substances. They’re sound and heat insulating, breathable and moisture regulating.
“Wallpaper drives attention and adds character to the room. A wallpaper with pictorial patterns is always the start of the show and would be the focal point of the room. It would create conversation for you and your guests.”
“I personally love grass cloth wallpaper for its beautiful texture. If you’re not allergic to dust or suffer from hay fever, I would use it for the living room.
“It would look absolutely stunning with its texture. I also love non-woven wallpaper. I would use this wallpaper for bedrooms, dining areas and basically everywhere except for the bathroom.”
Maggie says that, in terms of practicality, a wallpaper made from vinyl that is scrubbable is preferred for a bathroom space. She says you want something that’s going to be able to stand up to moisture in the bathroom.
Meanwhile, with regards to patterns and colour, it’s really up to the individual. “I strongly believe that it’s your home, and you should choose whatever design speaks to you. The design you choose reflects your personality,” explains Maggie. “There is no fixed rule when it comes to choosing a design for a room.”
Maggie recommends using a more interesting, complex or busy and colourful patterned wallpaper for an entrance space, dining room or entertaining area. For the living room and bedroom areas where you want to have a quiet and relaxing time, a
wallpaper that offers serenity and calm is preferable.
“If you want something that is truly unique and special to your home, office or store, you may want to consider having a wallpaper or wall mural custommade. It’s an investment, but it’s worthwhile,” Maggie says. “The design is tailored for you. You can also choose the colour palette to suit the overall interior design.”
A common mistake when choosing a wallpaper is falling in love with the patterns or design of the wallpaper before thinking about its practicality and whether it’s suitable for the use of the space.
“While wallpaper is more affordable than ever before, it’s still an investment for many of us. I would recommend committing to the design of the wallpaper, think about what material of wallpaper you want and whether it’s suitable for the room.”

Slice of heaven
By Ben O’Connell and Paige O’Brien
From Footrot Flats to Flying Nun and Snifters to Swanndri, many beloved 20th-century icons and items remind New Zealanders of home.
Whether quirky, kitschy, or classy, interiors nationwide are injected with Kiwiana. An artist with number-eight-wire ingenuity, Glenn Jones has been making Kiwiana art for a decade.
Glenn defines Kiwiana as all the stuff we take ownership of that
is ingrained in New Zealand culture: nature, food, objects, sayings, and more. These are everyday things, yet they hold profound, nostalgic and sentimental meanings.
He says Kiwiana is powerful because it reminds us of our childhoods. “I lived next to a dairy and would take our glass bottle empties in to trade for cents that I would use for lolly mixtures, then head to the park with my friends; great memories,” he reminisces.
Glenn’s art conjures such strong emotions, a testament to his creative prowess.
Until recently, Kiwiana was rarely used to describe art and often carried a disparaging tone, but New Zealanders have come to widely embrace the term. Glenn notes how Kiwiana is forever growing and evolving, including iconic moments and things that have recently become part of our culture through social media.
The most memorable review that Glenn received was from an
older woman who purchased a chocolate fish print. “She told us it reminded her of her Dad, who used to work on the wharves,” he says.
“Every payday, he’d bring home a chocolate fish wrapped in newspaper for her and would say that he caught it off the wharf. It’s such a nice ‘Dad’ story, and it’s always stuck with me. It paints a really strong picture in my head, and I love that my art can stir emotions and memories like that.”
“I
lived next to a dairy and would take our glass bottle empties in to trade for cents that I would use for lolly mixtures, then head to the park with my friends; great memories.”
Glenn’s creativity is fuelled by coffee, running, passion, and love for art. “I’ve always really enjoyed bringing ideas to life.”
Art is just one way to incorporate Kiwiana elements into your home. Glenn suggests bringing New Zealand nostalgia in through old toys, packaging, photos, textiles, and the colour combinations that accompany them. DIY projects can prove effective too, after all, Kiwiana also reminds Glenn of how New Zealanders “think outside the square”.
Kiwiana reflects our shared history and culture, where humble objects like jandals and Buzzy Bees are national treasures. A framed print of Wattie’s tomato sauce or Edmonds baking powder in a London flat is a comforting reminder of home-cooked meals and scorching arvos at the bach.
Glenn’s work exemplifies Kiwiana’s connection, humour, and creative charm. His art doesn’t just celebrate New Zealand culture; it keeps it alive and thriving, even as the world continues to change.

Six strategies for styling your living spaces
By Stacey Gillies
The modern way of living in our current world sees the main spaces in our homes as more than just places to relax and entertain; the interiors of our homes reflect our personality, expressing where we have been and what we love. The living room is one of these fundamental spaces, it is where family life occurs, where guests stop over, and kids relax (or make forts).
It is, therefore, imperative for our current way of living that we design our interiors to embrace what we love and create a safe haven for ourselves and our families.
A well-designed interior can help us relax and repair, enhance our creativity, and put us in a good mood. Art in the home - of which I am a big
advocate - has been shown to increase serotonin levels.
It’s not just art however, there some key factors to creating a well-designed space, and it doesn’t require buying new things.
Here I highlight six key strategies for improving the aesthetics of your living room (or any room for that matter)
1. Placement of furniture
• Move sofas and chairs away from walls - if you are able. Bring pieces together in an arrangement to create a convivial and intimate space or ‘zone.’ Use a rug to help create this ‘zone’ and to anchor furniture
• Leave enough space between furniture pieces to prevent overcrowding and allow for flow of foot traffic
• Ensure furniture is of varying heights so your eye can travel up and down, as opposed to pieces all at the same level
• Balance is another key principle – one mistake I see often is a very large TV with a small cabinet underneath. Ensure the proportions of your entertainment unit is wider than your television to balance it out.
2. Editing
• Less is often more – declutter and curate decor items to avoid visual overload
• Only display those pieces that you enjoy and remind you of good times/memories and that are aesthetically pleasing
• Negative space and a clutterfree environment allow the eyes to rest and appreciate key design elements
• Ensure you have appropriate storage to hide away any unsightly items. Make sure the storage itself is visually pleasing
• Lots of little bits and pieces or knick-knacks, as we like to call them, can start to become disorderly; choose one or two larger pieces for a more curated look.
3. Shapes
• Employ a variety of shapes in furniture, soft furnishings and accessories to add dynamism to the interior
• Contrasting shapes, such as pairing angular furniture with round cushions, for example, can create an engaging visual rhythm and break up hard architectural lines
• Repeating certain shapes throughout the space lends a sense of unity
• Look at interesting light fittings or lampshades that can be easily changed up and come in a variety of sculptural forms.
4. Mixing old with new
• Combining antique and vintage pieces or family heirlooms with modern furniture adds character and a sense of history to the space. This tactic really personalises an interior
• The mix of old and new will reflect personal style rather than a ‘show home’ vibe
• Furniture with a patina or age provides textural interest e.g. aged brass
• Pair artworks with vintage frames alongside more modern pieces.
A well-designed interior can help us relax and repair, enhance our creativity, and put us in a good mood.
5. Scale
• Properly scaled furniture and accessories ensure that a room feels proportionate and harmonious.
• Play with assorted sizes of items, whether it be furniture or accessories – note too many small pieces will feel itsy-bitsy
• Go large where you can and make a statement, whether it be a piece of art, a vase, or even a pot plant.
• Place items of varying heights together to carry the eye up and down.
• Think about your ceiling height when buying furniture – low ceilings work better with smaller-scale furniture such as low-back couches and chairs
• Create focal points in the room. An ornate fireplace is an easy focal point, so look at enhancing it or styling the mantel with some beautiful objects
• If you have a small space, add a large mirror which helps create the illusion of a larger room.
6. Lighting
• Layered lighting, including ambient, task, and accent lighting, adds depth and dimension to the interior
• Select light fittings that complement the overall design style while providing adequate illumination
• Dimmers allow control over the intensity of light, enabling adjustment for different activities and moods
• Try a mix of lamps, such as table lamps and floor lamps, so you don’t always need to rely on your overhead lighting
• Look to natural lighting where you can; add a beautiful sheer drapery if the light gets too bright.

From vision to reality
Emma Taylor is a landscape architect with Boffa Miskell, a leading environmental planning and design consultancy. Creating unique designs that meet the demands of both the client and the space is a complex and rewarding feat, she tells Ben O’Connell.
There’s much to consider when designing the perfect landscape for your home: your needs and wants, your life stage and future plans, the property’s location and climate, and the budget. Landscape architect Emma Taylor has mastered finding a balance between them all.
She says that whether it’s a young couple that has maximised their budget on house design or renovations or empty nesters who have disposable income but whose needs will change over the next decade, considering how these factors impact each client uniquely is what’s most important when designing residential landscapes.
“Having a plan is key,” she says. “Plans allow homeowners to work away at a design, adding on features like outdoor fireplaces and patios as their budget allows. If it takes two months or 20 years, a plan ensures the site will work as a whole.”
Knowing where key features and focus points could go and how people will access and move through the space is vital. Each landscape is unique to both the client and site, a sentiment Emma prioritises.
“I always tell my clients ‘It’s your house, not mine’. It’s really important to create a design that they like, that works for them, their lifestyle, and their property.
“Success for me is when it just fits. Sometimes, this means creating a design which looks like it’s always been there, and other times, it’s finding a solution to create or retrofit an outdoor space that floats over previous walls and paving to reduce removing concrete to landfill.
“Most importantly, it’s when the client is excited about their plan and the vision that we create for them.”
With balancing so many factors, compromise is inevitable. Sometimes, the client’s aspirations, unfortunately, lie outside the realm of possibility. Emma says that understanding priorities is the key; often, meeting the brief means making a few previously unconsidered changes.
“An example of this might be relocating existing water features to a more suitable location, or sadly removing a tree to open up space and replacing with another specimen which works better for the site,” she says.
Emma is less concerned about trends and instead focuses on using quality and local products. Landscape design is such an investment, and trends change often. Some clients might have picked up on a current design trend and wish to incorporate
its elements into their outdoor space, but their location means the style isn’t viable.
“A homeowner might have had a great weekend at a lodge in Queenstown, but trying to recreate that look and feel space of that outdoor space in the backyard of their Ponsonby villa just isn’t going to work!” Emma remarks.
The challenge then becomes adapting what the client liked about said lodge, maybe the firepit or a certain seating area, to a style that works for the site. Plants can prove another imbalance, because as Emma says, “you wouldn’t find a nikau palm growing commonly in a Dunedin garden.”

Throwing shade on summer
By Jamie Quinn
I don’t know about you, but when summer hits, I want to spend every spare second outside taking in every ounce of vitamin D I possibly can.
The trouble is, how do you create a summer-friendly backyard that allows you to thrive in the heat without cooking? Thankfully, there are plenty of easy ways to cool things down so you can enjoy every warm day to the fullest. From shade hacks to simple natural tricks, here’s how you can turn your backyard into a refreshing summer retreat.
Install outdoor shade structures
Let’s face it—finding a shady spot is a lifesaver on those blazing hot days. Adding a pergola, gazebo, retractable awning, or even just a canopy can give you a nice, shaded space where you can chill out comfortably.
Why you’ll love it:
• Keeps you and your guests cool and protected from the scorching sun
• Adds a touch of style and makes your backyard feel like an outdoor living room
• Creates the perfect spot for lazy afternoon hangouts or dinners al fresco.
If you’re in for the long haul, a pergola with climbing plants like wisteria or grapevines gives you shade and some beautiful greenery. Want something flexible? A retractable awning can be adjusted based on where the sun is. For a quick, budgetfriendly option, a large patio umbrella or some sail shades will do the trick—no fuss required.
Add natural shade with trees and shrubs
Trees and shrubs might take some time to grow, but trust me, they’re worth it. The right tree in the right spot can make your backyard feel 10 degrees cooler—talk about a game-changer!
Why you’ll love it:
• Provides natural, eco-friendly shade and helps keep the air fresh
• Gives your backyard an instant boost in beauty and value
• Blocks hot winds and adds a cosy, private feel.
Go for fast-growing shrubs like hydrangea, cabbage trees, or evergreen alder if you want quicker results. Place them on the west or south side of your backyard to block that intense afternoon sun. For a charming, shaded nook, surround your seating area with smaller trees and shrubs—it’ll feel like your own little oasis.
Install water features
There’s nothing like the cooling effect of water on a hot day. Whether it’s a fountain, pond, or some simple misters, water features can make the air around them feel noticeably cooler.
Why you’ll love it:
• The gentle sound of running water is relaxing and instantly makes your backyard feel like a spa
• Draws in birds and other wildlife, making your space feel alive
• Cools the surrounding air naturally.
Misters are a budget-friendly way to keep cool and can be installed along the edge of an awning or pergola for a light, refreshing mist. If you’ve got more space (and a little more budget), a small pond or fountain can be a beautiful addition. Just make sure they’re shaded to keep water loss to a minimum.
Use outdoor fans
On sweltering days, an outdoor fan can be a lifesaver. Whether it’s a ceiling fan on your covered patio or a portable one, fans keep the air circulating and make your space feel cooler.
Why you’ll love it:
• Gives you an immediate cool-down
• Helps keep mosquitoes and other bugs at bay
• Works great when paired with misters for double the cooling effect.
If you have a pergola or covered patio, install a weather-resistant ceiling fan. No overhead structure? No problem—just grab a portable oscillating fan. Look for outdoor-friendly models that can handle the elements.
Use light-coloured outdoor fabrics
Dark fabrics absorb heat, making your seating area feel like a
sauna. Light-coloured fabrics, on the other hand, reflect heat and keep your space comfortable.
Why you’ll love it:
• Keeps your outdoor seating cooler and more inviting
• Brightens up your space and gives it a breezy vibe.
Choose outdoor cushions, throw pillows, and tablecloths in light, breathable fabrics. Go for UV-resistant options to keep them looking fresh and prevent fading. To add an extra layer of shade and style, try some removable canopies or light, airy drapes.
With a few easy tweaks, your backyard can go from a sunscorched patch to a spot where you’ll actually want to hang out. So here’s to spending long, lazy days outside, soaking up the sun comfortably and enjoying everything summer has to offer!
Trees and shrubs might take some time to grow, but trust me, they’re worth it. The right tree in the right spot can make your backyard feel ten degrees cooler— talk about a game-changer!
Light up your night
How outdoor lighting transforms your spaces
As the days lengthen and the air warms, the allure of spending evenings outdoors grows stronger. Outdoor lighting not only enhances the beauty of your home but also extends the hours you can enjoy your outdoor spaces. From practical illumination to atmospheric glow, the right outdoor lighting can transform any garden, patio, or balcony into a summertime hot spot.
The benefits of outdoor lighting in summer
1. Extends outdoor activities: Outdoor lighting makes it possible to continue enjoying outdoor activities long after sunset. Whether you’re having some drinks with friends, playing games, or simply relaxing, adequate lighting ensures that your outdoor enjoyment is not cut short by the fall of night.
2. Enhances safety and security: Illuminating entrances, walkways, and dark corners of your yard not only helps prevent trips and falls but also acts as a deterrent against burglars. Lights that activate on motion
detection offer extra security, startling unwanted visitors and alerting you to activity around your property.
3. Increases curb appeal: Good lighting can make a home look warm and inviting. It highlights landscaping, architecture details, and key features like sculptures or water features, improving your home’s curb appeal and potentially increasing its market value.
4. Creates a comfortable ambience: Proper outdoor lighting can create an inviting atmosphere that draws people outside. It can be used to set a mood, from romantic soft lighting to vibrant, colourful displays that energise a space.
Outdoor lighting is a key component of summer outdoor living. Not only does it extend the time you can spend outdoors, but it also enhances safety, security, and the overall beauty of your home.
Best types of outdoor lighting for summer
1. String lights: Perfect for parties or casual get-togethers, string lights can be wrapped around trees, strung over courtyards, or hung from hooks to add a whimsical charm to any evening. They provide a soft light that isn’t too harsh on the eyes, creating a perfect mood for summer nights.
2. Solar lights: These are great for garden paths, borders, and flower beds. Solar lights charge during the day and automatically light up at dusk, providing a hassle-free lighting solution that won’t increase your electric bill.
3. LED spotlights: LED spotlights can be used to enhance the visibility and features of specific areas such as garden statues, flagpoles, entryways, patios, or outdoor cooking areas. They can also be used for accent lighting to highlight architectural details or plants.
4. Wall lights: These fixtures are typically mounted on exterior walls and can cast either a broad floodlight or a directed beam to illuminate entryways, patios, or outdoor cooking
areas. They can also be used for accent lighting to highlight architectural details or plants.
5. Deck and step lights: These lights are built into steps or the floors of decks and patios to emit a gentle glow that marks pathways and edges, preventing stumbles and falls. They add a modern touch to outdoor spaces and enhance the functionality of areas like outdoor kitchens and dining areas.
6. Lanterns: Lanterns are a portable lighting solution that can add a decorative touch to outdoor settings. They can be used to light a path, define a dining area, or create a focal point within a garden. Lanterns also come in a variety of styles, from traditional to modern, to fit any décor theme.
7. Pathway lights: Pathway lights are essential for safely navigating through your garden or yard. They can be staked into the ground to light up a driveway or sidewalk, making them practical for both safety and aesthetic appeal.
8. Underwater lighting: A stunning addition to any pond or pool, underwater lighting
creates an ethereal glow that makes water features come alive at night. It enhances safety around water bodies and adds a magical touch to nighttime swimming.
Installation tips
To make the most of your outdoor lighting, consider the following tips:
• Plan your layout: Before purchasing lights, walk around your yard at night and identify areas that need illumination for safety or would benefit from decorative lighting. Sketch a map of your outdoor area and plan where each light should be placed for maximum effect.
• Choose energy-efficient options: Opt for LED lights, which are more energyefficient and have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs. They are also cooler, reducing the risk of fire and burns. Solar options are ideal for areas without easy access to power outlets.
• Hire a professional: For installations that require complex wiring or integration with your home’s electrical system, it’s advisable to hire
a certified electrician. This ensures that your system is safe, functional, and compliant with local building codes.
• Use timers and sensors: Automate your outdoor lighting with timers and sensors to reduce energy consumption and ensure that lights are only active when needed. Timers can be set to turn lights on at dusk and off at a specified time, while sensors can trigger lighting when movement is detected, adding a layer of security.
Outdoor lighting is a key component of summer outdoor living. Not only does it extend the time you can spend outdoors, but it also enhances safety, security, and the overall beauty of your home. With a number of types available, from solar lights to LED spotlights, there is a lighting solution to meet every need and style. By choosing the right lights and following proper installation practices, you can create a wonderfully illuminated space that makes summer evenings even more magical.
The five keys to create a healthy home
Most buildings are built or renovated with functional design in mind, and today this is especially so regarding health, wellbeing and comfort.
So here are five key components to creating a healthy home.
Correctly positioned windows make the most of fresh air
No one can live without fresh air − and the same goes for your house.
More often than not, we cannot sense pollutants in indoor air, but they will affect our health and wellbeing.
This is why our houses should offer protection from the hidden pollutants we discharge when we cook, or that are given off from building materials and furniture.
By positioning your windows correctly, you can enjoy the benefits of natural ventilation that will rapidly improve the indoor air quality in your home.
The right amount of daylight at the right time
Waking up to natural morning light, plenty of daylight throughout the day and darkness at night are crucial to our health and comfort.
Light and darkness are key elements in keeping our internal body clock and circadian rhythm synchronised. So investing in appropriate measures at home to provide daylight and darkness, such as windows and blinds, can pay big dividends.

Bring nature inside
Living in close contact with nature improves your mood, creates better health and reduces stress, which is why we need to bring nature inside our houses.
When building a house, it is worth considering having at least one outdoor or semi-outdoor space − such as a garden, terrace or balcony.
Another option is to make sure that the house provides you with a generous view of the sky and ground; this brings nature inside too.
Rid your home of stressful noise
Apart from being a source of irritation, unwanted sounds, like loud traffic, can cause stress and have a direct negative impact on our wellbeing.
External noise from rowdy neighbours, and internal noise from heating/cooling or ventilation systems, should therefore be kept to a minimum. And even lower noise levels are needed at night.
Nothing is impossible!
At Dr. Electrical, we have established a distinguished reputation for excellence, reliability, and innovation. Our team of highly skilled and registered electricians is committed to delivering superior services, tailored to meet the specific needs of our clients.
We offer an extensive range of electrical services, including:

Take control of indoor temperatures
One of the factors most crucial to our indoor comfort is avoiding unpleasant indoor temperatures.
We spend 90% of our time indoors, so make sure that indoor temperatures follow the same rhythm as those outdoors, which rise during the day and fall at night.
Because our bodies are designed to follow the rhythms outdoors, this will automatically achieve what we feel is the most comfortable indoor temperature.
By positioning your windows correctly, you can enjoy the benefits of natural ventilation that will rapidly improve the indoor air quality in your home.

Eco-conscious cleaning and decluttering Fresh starts
In a world where every scrub leaves an imprint on our planet, the call for eco-conscious cleaning solutions has never been louder. As we bid farewell to the era of harsh chemicals and synthetic cleaners, a refreshing wave of eco-friendly alternatives is reshaping the way we tidy up.
Anna from iWardrobes shares her insights on why a spring clean and cleaning and decluttering in general should always be a more eco-conscious event.
“Cleaning renews and rejuvenates a home; it’s a chance to breathe new life into our homes. By decluttering, organising, and deep cleaning, we create space for positive energy and a fresh start.
“Engaging in eco-friendly cleaning practices isn’t just about preserving the planet; it’s about creating healthier living spaces for ourselves and our loved ones. Eco-friendly cleaning products are made from natural ingredients, so they are far less likely to cause allergic reactions.
“By opting for natural cleaning solutions, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also alleviate hay fever symptoms, create a more pet-friendly environment, and unlock a variety of health benefits.”
Declutter mindfully
Before diving into your cleaning spree, take a mindful approach to decluttering. Evaluate each item in your wardrobe and ask yourself if it truly serves a purpose or brings you joy. Donate gently used clothing to local charities, use platforms such as TradeMe, Depop or Facebook Marketplace or organise a clothes swap with friends to give your garments a new life.
Embrace natural cleaning products
Swap out chemical-laden cleaning products for ecofriendly alternatives. Opt for natural ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice, which are effective at cleaning while being gentle on the environment. Using homemade cleaning solutions reduces your reliance on harsh
chemicals, contributing to a healthier indoor environment and minimising your environmental impact.
Repair and upcycle
Before discarding damaged clothing, consider if it can be repaired or upcycled. We recommend learning basic sewing skills to mend tears or replace missing buttons. Get creative with upcycling old
garments into new pieces or accessories, giving them a fresh lease on life and reducing waste.
Invest in quality pieces
When refreshing your wardrobe for the spring season, prioritise quality over quantity. Invest in timeless, well-made garments that are designed to last. Look for sustainable materials such as organic cotton, linen, or recycled fibres, which have a lower environmental impact compared to conventional fabrics.
Organise with sustainability in mind
When organising your wardrobe, opt for sustainable storage solutions. Choose bamboo or recycled plastic hangers instead of traditional wire hangers— utilise natural materials like cotton or canvas for storage bins and baskets. By selecting ecofriendly organisational tools, you can keep your space tidy while minimising environmental impact.
“Cleaning renews and rejuvenates a home; it’s a chance to breathe new life into our homes. By decluttering, organising, and deep cleaning, we create space for positive energy and a fresh start.”

Home safe home Smart security to change the way you protect your home
By Jamie Quinn
From smart locks to doorbell cameras, security tech has come a long way, making it easy to keep tabs on your home, even when you’re miles away. But with so many new gadgets and systems out there, figuring out what’s best for you can feel overwhelming. So, what are your options, and how can each one help you stay secure?
Smart doorbells and cameras
One of the most popular forms of home security tech today is the smart doorbell camera. These devices allow homeowners to see who’s at the door, even when they’re away from home. Many models come with two-way audio, so you can communicate with visitors (or deter potential intruders) directly from your smartphone. For example, if someone suspicious approaches your door, you can ask them why
they’re there—even if you’re miles away. This feature adds a layer of protection and also allows for convenient package deliveries or guest arrivals, as you can remotely unlock the door when needed.
Smart locks
With smart locks, the days of hiding spare keys under the doormat are over. These devices let you lock and unlock doors using a code, your smartphone, or even biometrics like fingerprints. Not only is this convenient (no more worrying about lost keys!), but it also provides an additional layer of security by allowing you to control access to your home. Many smart locks also allow you to monitor who is coming and going, which is especially useful for families with children or frequent visitors.
For added security, consider pairing your smart lock with other security devices, such as cameras or alarms, to create a multi-layered system.
Motion detectors and sensors
Motion detectors and sensors are among the most effective ways to secure your home’s perimeter. These devices detect movement in and around your property and can trigger an alarm if someone enters without permission. Modern systems are equipped with sensors that can distinguish between different types of movement, reducing the risk of false alarms from pets or harmless activity.
Another benefit of today’s advanced sensors is their integration with other smart home devices. For example, you can set up your lights to turn on automatically when motion is detected at night, which is a great deterrent for intruders.
Remote
monitoring
With on-the-go surveillance, keeping your home secure is as easy as checking your phone. Advanced home security systems now allow you to monitor live feeds and receive alerts, so
you’re never out of the loop, whether you’re at work or on holiday. If anything suspicious happens, you can react instantly by reaching out to neighbours or contacting the police.
Many systems also come with cloud-based video storage, allowing you to review and save past recordings when necessary—a great feature if you need documentation of a security incident.
When it comes to home security, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution—it’s all about finding what works best for you. We suggest thinking about a few things: your budget, the size of your home, and how comfortable you are with tech. If you’re more into simple solutions, a basic system might be just right. But if you’re ready for a high-tech setup, there are systems packed with features like cameras, smart locks, and more. A little research goes a long way in setting up a security system that keeps your home safe without costing a fortune.

From start-up to stand out
T&N Painting Ltd, established in January 2022 by founders Nathan Verma and Tom Neal, has rapidly become a well-regarded name in Nelson Tasman’s painting industry.
What began as a modest operation with just Nathan and Tom has already grown into a four-person team and now Resene accredited eco decorators.
Their journey has been marked by an unwavering dedication to quality and a keen eye for detail, qualities that have helped T&N Painting establish its unique brand in the market. For Nathan and Tom, painting isn’t merely a job—it’s a craft that demands precision, patience, and a commitment to excellence.
Both founders were drawn to the painting industry because of their shared appreciation for detail-oriented work. “Our fine eyes for detail” is how they describe the attribute that initially drew them to this field, and it’s an ethos that permeates everything they do. They understand that highquality painting requires more than just basic skills; it requires a systematic approach and a
commitment to perfection. This approach is what sets T&N Painting apart from competitors. As Tom explains, “Our point of difference is our fine sprayed trim and the fact that we don’t rush jobs just to get them done. We take our time and charge a fair price.”
T&N Painting’s commitment to quality over speed has quickly earned them a reputation as a company that clients can trust. Rather than rushing through projects to increase their volume, Nathan and Tom emphasise a slower, more meticulous approach that guarantees a superior finish. This philosophy has proven successful in securing ongoing projects and has set the foundation for T&N Painting’s growing portfolio.
A notable highlight from T&N Painting’s recent work is the series of Milestone Homes they have painted. Working on these homes has given Nathan and Tom the chance to showcase their expertise on a larger scale.
“The future could potentially hold many things for us; we are looking to employ and grow but also try some new techniques with our spray finish,”
“We have completed several projects this year, but the most successful would be the number of Milestone Homes we have painted,” Tom shares. These projects exemplify the high standard of workmanship that T&N Painting upholds, demonstrating their ability to handle more extensive, high-end projects without compromising on quality or attention to detail. Beyond their craftsmanship, T&N Painting places a strong emphasis on building relationships with subcontractors, clients, and other partners. This commitment to creating strong, professional connections has been essential to their success. “Big wins would just be our very successful relationships we have built with our subcontractors and contractors we work for,” Tom says. By creating a network of trusted collaborators, Nathan and Tom have positioned their company as a dependable, quality-focused service provider.
Despite the achievements, T&N Painting has faced its share of challenges, as any young company does. “The biggest challenge would be managing staff coming and going,” Tom notes. In an industry where skilled labour is vital, managing the flow of employees can be challenging for a small business. Yet, T&N Painting has navigated this issue by remaining focused on maintaining their core values and upholding the standards that
define their work. This resilience is a testament to their dedication, and it has allowed them to continue delivering consistent results to their clients.
Looking ahead, Nathan and Tom are excited about the future of T&N Painting. They envision a path that includes both growth in team size and exploration of new techniques. One area they are particularly enthusiastic about is advancing their spray finish methods, a technique that has already become a signature of their work. “The future could potentially hold many things for us; we are looking to employ and grow but also try some new techniques with our spray finish,” Tom explains. This vision reflects a forward-thinking approach that will allow T&N Painting to stay at the forefront of industry trends, setting themselves apart through continuous innovation.
Central to T&N Painting’s business ethos is their promise to deliver a “top job at a fair price.” This guiding principle has earned them a loyal client base and has positioned them as a reputable choice in the local painting market. This commitment to integrity and quality has not only sustained their business but has also built a foundation of trust with clients who know they’re receiving honest, high-quality work.
Behind the scenes, Nathan and Tom are quick to acknowledge the support they receive from their families and team. Building
a business is no easy feat, and the backing of their loved ones has played an essential role in their journey. “Just a big shout out to the companies and clients we work for and also our amazing staff and support staff we have in the background—my partner Krystal and Nathan’s wife Alysha,” Tom shares. This sense of gratitude and acknowledgement for the team effort reflects the values at the heart of T&N Painting—a business built not only on skill but on community and support.
In less than two years, T&N Painting Ltd has become a rising star in the Nelson Tasman painting industry. Through a dedication to quality, a clientcentred approach, and a vision for future growth, Nathan and Tom are poised to continue making a mark on the industry. With a foundation built on trust, craftsmanship, and integrity, T&N Painting is well-positioned for a bright and enduring future.

Looking after external timber
Well-maintained decks and fences can deliver the perfect finish to your property’s landscaped look.
There’s nothing quite like the look of a newly installed and stained timber deck. When the light hits the timber just right, it seems to glow.
However, because it’s an outside feature, decks are often viewed as indestructible and aren’t properly maintained as a result. Many people aren’t aware of the need to clean and maintain decks on a regular basis.
What diminishes the glow of a new timber deck is that over time, dust accumulates, creating a hospitable environment for moisture and algae in winter. Not only is regular upkeep important
for the overall aesthetic of the deck, but it’s safety as well.
The easiest and most effective solution? Consistent cleaning. It keeps your deck looking nice and gives the timber a lot more life because the thing that rots timber is accumulated dust and dirt getting wet.
This causes the rot to begin on the surface of the deck, particularly hardwood decks, which are untreated decks, and then they can fail within 20 years. At first glance, anything over 10 years seems like a long time, but a wellmaintained hardwood deck can actually last 30 or 40 years.
A good scrub down with the correct cleaning compounds once a year can make a lasting difference in the lifespan of a deck.
Building and renovating rules
Certificate of Acceptance
A Certificate of Acceptance (CoA) may be issued by the Council for building work that did not have building consent if, on reasonable grounds, the building work complies with the current New Zealand Building Code.
Issuing a Certificate of Acceptance
A Certificate of Acceptance (CoA) can usually be issued for work done after 1 July 1992.
There are two situations where a CoA would be issued; these are work done under urgency/ emergency situations and work that has been carried out without a building consent when it was reasonable to do so. For further details on each situation see below.
Work done under urgency/ emergency situation
This is work which needs to be undertaken to protect lives or
property from danger and the time it takes to obtain a building consent would be unreasonable and increase the length of exposure to the risk.
Work that has been carried out without a building consent when it was reasonable to do so
This could be when:
• An owner (or previous owner) should have got a building consent but didn’t (under either the 1991 or 2004 Building Act)
• An accredited building consent authority that is not a territorial authority or regional authority granted consent but is unable or refuses to issue a Code Compliance Certificate.
When applying for a Certificate of Acceptance the construction documents, plans and specifications are the same as if a building consent was being applied for but with added
verification showing how the actual construction meets the requirements of the plans and specifications and, in turn, how compliance with the New Zealand Building Code has been achieved.
If the application is declined, Council must issue a Notice to Fix, which will set out what remedial work needs to be done so the work complies. You can apply for a CoA by logging into the ObjectiveBuild website and completing an online application.
Tiny houses
If you are considering building a tiny house, it is important to understand what rules apply and what requirements need to be considered before you start building.
Some people refer to tiny houses as compact dwellings, detached standalone dwellings, tiny houses on wheels, or have their own interpretations of what
tiny houses are. It is important to understand the definition difference between a “building” and a vehicle”. The MBIE Guidance provides a good flowchart explaining this.
It is important to clearly define the intended use, location/s, and construction method which will then inform which pieces of legislation will apply to your tiny house.
Check with the Southland District Council building department to find out what applies to your situation. We will provide you with information about the requirements for building a tiny house in your area, including any applicable codes and permits.
