Canterbury Today’s picks the places to be and sights to see

Welcome to Canterbury Today. This issue leads off talking to the directors of Kowhai Creative, Emily Reizinger and Abby Vanner, who are helping local businesses navigate the increasingly noisy mediascape with impactful, authentic branding and marketing. We step inside the family-owned business Fush to find out what makes them tick and how they’ve cultivated some serious customer loyalty. You can also get a taste of Ciao, the European dining experience with an ever-evolving menu that keeps Christchurch foodies coming back for more.

We look at the price of contactless payments like payWave, asking why we pay more to save a few seconds. Staying with business costs, we also delve into how much late payments are costing small businesses and assess the expense of choosing Afterpay.

Keeping with technology, we look at the double-edged AI sword, investigating job creation and loss in the new tech era, as well as how to make virtual meetings more efficient. You’ll also find pieces on how a deep tech incubator has been supporting Kiwi innovators for a decade, the latest gadgets to uplift your lifestyle, and how SouthPAN is boosting South Canterbury’s economy, plus much more.

The scenic West Coast of New Zealand is famous for its stunning scenery, and you can experience it at the Greymouth Kiwi Holiday Park and Motels. Situated at South Beach, Greymouth, adjacent to the beautiful, rugged West Coast beach and the West Coast Wilderness Trail, you can stroll along the beach, admire the snow-capped mountains and in the evening experience the beautiful sunsets.

Debunking the super-marketing strategies

Boy oh boy, did the supermarket sector look different in 2001. Auckland and Christchurch shoppers had eight different retailers on offer, while Hamilton and Dunedin had five. Price Chopper, 3 Guys, Foodtown, Write Price – even Big Fresh and its animatronic vegetables – are all but a distant memory.

Over the past 24 years, mergers and acquisitions between grocery giants have chipped away at the options. Now, just two players remain, dominating 90% of the market.

In his first annual report in 2024, the Grocery Commissioner confirmed that further and sustained intervention is required to drive competition and better consumer outcomes.

Nothing illustrates the poor outcomes consumers are experiencing better than supermarkets and their conduct around pricing. Big picture, we continue to pay way more for groceries than we should thanks to the supermarkets’ fat margins. At a customer level, the supermarkets’ consistent failure to display shelf prices correctly and their confusing and, in some cases, downright misleading discounting practices show they aren’t worried about annoying or deceiving their customers because they know those customers have

nowhere else to go. Despite the Grocery Commissioner’s warnings to the supermarkets, Consumer NZ still receives frequent examples of dodgy supermarket pricing.

It’s hard to uncook a chicken. Fixing the grocery sector will take time. It will likely require a new player to enter and shake things up, as well as heavy regulatory oversight from the Commerce Commission and government.

In the meantime, consumers can fight for fairer prices by learning about these supermarketing strategies and becoming savvy shoppers.

Loyalty cards: don’t always mean cheapest prices

We think loyalty programmes are primarily designed to track your spending habits not necessarily provide the best deals. A recent Consumer NZ investigation of a 22-item grocery basket found Pak’nSave was the cheapesteven without a loyalty programme. Instead of trading your (valuable!) data for small discounts, focus on buying only what you need and comparing prices across stores.

Specials: might not be so special

We regularly hear about dodgy pricing, with “specials” costing more than the usual price, misleading multibuys and shelf prices that don’t match what’s charged at the till. The Grocery Commissioner estimates consumers are losing millions of dollars each year through such unfair practices. We recommend

It’s hard to uncook a chicken. Fixing the grocery sector will take time. It will likely require a new player to enter and shake things up, as well as heavy regulatory oversight from the Commerce Commission and government.

always carefully checking prices and receipts.

Home brands: might not be all they’re cracked up to be

Our recent investigation found Pam’s Value Cream Style Corn contains just 40% sweet corn, while Watties’ has 80%! Always check the ingredients lists on budget items.

We’re also concerned that the increasing number of homebranded products might push out other suppliers and brands – reducing choice, quality and competition. While the Grocery Commissioner is keeping an eye

on home brands, be aware that choosing a bargain home brand today could limit future choices.

Going for growth: supermarkets on notice

The Government is seeking to bolster supermarket competition to deliver a better deal for shoppers, Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis says.

“Studies have shown that New Zealand shoppers pay more for kitchen staples than their counterparts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.

“The market lacks competition with three large entities, two of whom don’t compete in the same island, effectively controlling 82% of the market.

“We need more competition to put downward pressure on prices and deliver a better deal for shoppers.

“The weekly supermarket shop makes up a significant proportion of most people’s weekly budget and contributes massively to their cost of living.

“Therefore, I am determined to remove unnecessary regulatory hurdles that discourage new entrants from entering the market.

“Additional steps could include cracking down on predatory pricing, ensuring all competitors have fair access to products, assisting new entrants to access suitable land and properties for development and assisting them to attract international capital.”

Nicola Willis announced the intention to strengthen competition in the supermarket sector at the release of a progress report on the work being done to shift New Zealand to a higher growth track.

Events diary

“The Going For Growth snapshot details more than 80 actions that have either been completed since the Government took office or are underway.

“Economic growth is key to raising living standards, creating higher-paying jobs, and delivering the vital public services New Zealanders want and deserve.

“New Zealanders have been through a tough time with high inflation pushing up interest rates and driving the economy into recession.

“lnflation is now back under control but to deliver the opportunities and high-quality public services people expect we need to build a stronger, wealthier and more resilient economy that benefits all New Zealanders.

“Going For Growth details how the Government is going about that task.

“It sets out the five pillars driving our push for economic growth: developing talent, competitive business settings, promoting global trade and investment, innovation, technology and science and infrastructure for growth.

“Under each pillar are actions already underway to support growth, with more to come.

“To grasp the opportunities in front of us, we must lean in and boldly pursue the things that will make this country the wealthier country we want it to be.

“We must adopt a ‘yes’ mentality when sometimes it is easier to say ‘no’.” CT

Breaking barriers for small businesses

How

two designers turned passion into purpose with Kowhai Creative

Starting a business comes with its fair share of challenges. For small businesses, the struggle to establish a brand and connect with customers can feel like navigating a maze with no clear end. That’s where Kowhai Creative, a Christchurch-based, women-led branding and marketing agency, comes in.

With directors and senior creatives Emily Reizinger and Abby Vanner at the reins, Kōwhai Creative is helping local businesses cut through the noise with impactful, authentic branding and marketing.

Every great business has a story, and Kōwhai Creative’s begins with a shared passion for design and its transformative impact on businesses. Emily and Abby met while studying at Ara Institute of Canterbury and kept in touch through their respective freelance careers. Over time, the pair realised their creative synergy and decided to join forces.

“Kōwhai Creative came to life from a shared passion for the impact great design can have across businesses and organisations,” they explain. “We had both seen the success a solid brand and website can bring and wanted to help others on that journey.”

In May 2022, Kōwhai Creative was officially born, and Emily and Abby set to work creating a business that delivered not only outstanding creative outcomes but also exceptional client service. They spent their first year refining their service offerings, pricing, and processes, ensuring they could

deliver high-quality projects for clients of all sizes.

Choosing the perfect name for a business is no easy task, and Abby spent six months brainstorming before landing on Kōwhai Creative.

“When Kōwhai Creative came up, it felt very meant to be,” says Abby. The name reflects their local roots and commitment to supporting small Kiwi businesses. The Kōwhai tree, with its vibrant yellow flowers, represents boldness, energy, and positivity—qualities that Kōwhai Creative brings to every project.

A well-crafted brand is more than a logo or a tagline; it’s the heart of a business’s identity. It communicates what the business stands for, its values, and the experience it promises. For small businesses, this is especially important because trust and personal connections are often their biggest assets.

“Kowhai Creative came to life from a shared passion for the impact great design can have across businesses and organisations.”

“Branding is a fine balance,” Emily and Abby explain. “It needs to reflect the client’s vision and story while also connecting with the intended audience, and then to throw another spanner in there, we’re aiming to make your brand stand out in sometimes a very crowded market.”

Solution-based marketing—showing how a product or service solves a problem—is particularly effective for small businesses.

Emily and Abby emphasise the importance of brand consistency across all platforms. “We’re absolute sticklers for brand consistency!” they say. “In this day and age, a lot of trust is built by presenting a unified front across all of your touchpoints: social media, website, email marketing, paid ads. Ensuring your brand is polished and well-presented across all areas is the expected standard.”

For many small businesses, branding and marketing can be daunting and expensive. Limited budgets, lack of education, and an overwhelming number of options can make it hard to know where to start.

“Budget restraints and lack of education are two challenges that we see a lot,” Emily and Abby share. “We completely understand working on a shoestring budget when you’re just starting out, so being clever with how we deliver value to clients is essential.”

Kōwhai Creative prides itself on transparency and flexibility, customquoting every project to ensure clients only pay for what they need. This personalised approach allows them to meet businesses where they are, regardless of size or budget.

One of the biggest pain points for small businesses working with agencies is the lack of personal connection. Kōwhai Creative goes against the grain by putting their directors front and centre in every project.

“When you work with us, you don’t just get a project manager; you get one of the lead designers and directors themselves,” they explain. “We bring our business knowledge and experience to the table alongside our creative skills.”

Kōwhai Creative’s clear values also set them apart. Their guiding principles—like “Simple is our love language” and “People come first”—are woven into every interaction, ensuring an authentic, client-centred approach.

Kōwhai Creative doesn’t just build brands—they build relationships and long-term success stories. A prime example of their work is the transformation of NZ Mortgages, a Christchurch-based business.

“We built strong foundations for them across their brand, website, print materials, and all client touchpoints,” they share. After launching an ambitious marketing campaign, NZ Mortgages became a household name in the region, achieving significant growth and even partnering with Squirrel, a nationally recognised name in the industry.

From branding and website design to photography, videography, and marketing, Kōwhai Creative offers a full suite of services. Their goal? To be a one-stop shop for small businesses, simplifying the often-complicated branding and marketing process.

“All of our projects start with an indepth discovery session where we go over the nitty-gritty details of our client’s business,” Emily and Abby explain. This ensures every brand they create is authentic, memorable, and tailored to their client’s goals.

As technology continues to evolve, Kōwhai Creative encourages small businesses to stay ahead of the curve by embracing trends like AI integration, authentic storytelling, and ethical practices.

“Us Kiwis really value real connections with real people,” they note. “Behind-the-scenes

glimpses, customer testimonials—in a time where technology is pretty intense, showing the human side is important.

For businesses just starting out, Emily and Abby emphasise the importance of quality branding and website design. “Taking a DIY approach can put all of your hard work at risk if your brand isn’t communicating your value with the right audience,” they caution. Their advice? Do your research, ask lots of questions, and focus on areas where you can add authenticity while leaving the technical work to the experts.

Kōwhai Creative is always looking to expand its offerings to serve

clients better. In 2024, they launched a photography service to help businesses showcase their authentic selves. This year, they’re doubling down on digital marketing to make sure their clients thrive.

And if you’re in Christchurch, keep an eye out for their latest initiative, Kōwhai Canvas. “This allows local creatives to submit entries to display their art on our street-front windows and receive a $2000 cash prize. This created quite a buzz in the city, and we received some wonderful entries. Keep an eye out next time you drive or walk down St Asaph Street!”

“When you work with us, you don’t just get a project manager; you get one of the lead designers and directors themselves. We bring our business knowledge and experience to the table alongside our creative skills.”

Ciao

Walking into Ciao, you instantly get a sense of what makes this place special. The latest venture from Toby and Nikki Eaton, who also own Rascal and Kokomo, Ciao blends modern European dining with an ever-evolving menu that keeps Christchurch food lovers coming back for more.

Sitting down with Nikki, it’s clear that passion drives every aspect of the restaurant—from the menu to the ambience.

“Lots of people instantly go for pasta,” Nikki shares. “They associate it with the Italian side of European dining. It’s a heavy player in that style of food. So the pasta is a really good seller.”

One of their standout dishes is the ravioli, which rotates regularly. “Currently, we’ve got the burrata with nduja butter and pecorino and lemon,” she says, describing the dish with enthusiasm. “It’s a chilli and pork fat paste that we’ve made into a butter sauce. So it’s letting the burrata and the softness of the cheese just sit in the sauce, and pasta is the vessel that gets it into your mouth. And we cover it in lemon zest and pecorino. Eat them on their own, they’re very different. Eat them together, it’s... what’s the word? A flavour explosion.”

The Steak tartare at Ciao is another standout, served in Italian style rather than the more common French preparation. “The French have chilli, egg yolk, and mustard. Meanwhile, the Italian style is just lemon juice and olive oil, letting the meat be the hero without flavouring it with all these other things. Yeah, it’s got truffle emulsion on it, and it’s just clean.”

Their house-made focaccia is another must-try, with a parmesan butter that keeps customers raving.

“Lots of people do focaccia, and there are so many different versions and variations and thoughts on what it should or shouldn’t be. We make ours inhouse daily. The parmesan butter is nice and salty, and creamy. It’s the most talked-about thing in our online reviews and is raved about by customers. Some of them ask to buy butter to take home.”

“We’ve always liked to do things that challenge us, and we always loved the European and Italian cuisines, but we haven’t had the chance with our previous projects to delve down that path of modern European.”

A key part of Ciao’s appeal is its constantly changing menu, driven by seasonality and inspiration from their customers. “We’ve got a really good regular clientele base,” Nikki explains. “So if you’re coming in three or four, some of them every day of the week to have something to eat and drink, wanting to give them something different.”

There’s no set timeframe for menu changes, either. “There’s no given time,” she says. “It’s been printed twice this week already. I’m hoping that what we’ve got is enough to get us through the weekend so that we can go fresh next week.”

When asked what sets Ciao apart, Nikki doesn’t hesitate. “It’s bringing something different to Christchurch. I mean, you have wine bars, and you have restaurants, and you have cafes, but we open 10am till late Tuesday to Sunday and kind of hit all of the bases. You can come in here now for coffee and breakfast. You can come in in the afternoon for an Aperitivo. You can come in late night for a Negroni and cocktails or dinner.”

It’s this flexibility, combined with a commitment to keeping things

fresh and interesting, that keeps customers engaged. “Just keeping it refreshed. No one wants to eat the same thing every day or do the same thing every day, so being able to be creative in both the food and the drinks keeps us interested and engaged and learning, and the same is true for our customers.”

When it comes to the favourite things to make, Nikki prefers working with raw ingredients.

“I like working with raw products and letting them be clean and classic. Opposed to having to cook fish for it to be delicious. You can have ceviche, you can have Crudo. Same with scallops. A lot of people go, scallops have to be cooked. Scallop ceviche is also great. You’re going to see lots of that coming through on this menu as well. Just kind of letting the ingredients speak for themselves.”

Speaking with Toby, the business mastermind behind Ciao, it’s clear that the restaurant was born out of both opportunity and passion.

“We have Kokomo as well. So, that’s really close. We saw an opportunity with the Welder; the

lease was coming up, someone else took it, and the landlord liked that concept and encouraged us to build something else here.”

The logistics of opening Ciao were a challenge they embraced. “We’ve always liked to do things that challenge us, and we always loved the European and Italian cuisines, but we haven’t had the chance with our previous projects to delve down that path of modern European.”

Even the name Ciao has a personal connection for Toby. “Originally, when I started off in hospo, I worked

for a couple of pretty good people in various places. One of them was a place on Victoria Street called Ciao Bella. The Ciao name is obviously just a bit of a tip of the hat to those guys and feeding the addiction of good hospitality.”

The design and atmosphere of Ciao were carefully crafted, blending European minimalism with Christchurch’s unique character.

“If you think European, you think of crisp lines, but also of heritage, so like the brick wall, kept it as it was, that sort of shows the age, but having the crisp, like the linear, acoustic panelling on the wall, gives a nice sharp edge, but then just trying to be as minimal as possible.”

Ciao is a constantly evolving culinary journey shaped by experience, creativity, and a love for hospitality. With a menu that never sits still, a space that feels both fresh and classic, and an ethos built around a genuine connection with customers, it’s no wonder Christchurch has embraced it so wholeheartedly.

Whether you’re stopping in for morning coffee, an afternoon Spritz, or a dinner experience that surprises, Ciao is the kind of place that feels just right—a perfect reflection of Toby and Nikki’s passion for food, wine, and great company. CT

Surcharge surge

Research shows that Kiwis prefer to pay contactless, but with this comes surcharges to credit card and payWave payments. Why do we pay so much to pay just a few seconds faster?

Payments NZ says 28% of Kiwis only use contactless payments when there is no surcharge, double the 2022 rate; surcharges are at the top of consumers’ minds.

Security concerns and surcharge costs are the two most common reasons consumers prefer not to use contactless payments, per Payment NZ’s 2024 Consumer Research report.

Since the Retail Payment System Act 2022 set out guidelines for businesses to pass on the cost of accepting retail payments, mainly credit card network fees, it’s typical for retailers to pass a fee of around 1.5% of the purchase cost onto the consumer.

Before then, businesses had to absorb the cost of accepting credit and contactless debit card payments themselves. These merchant service fees varied depending on the card used and the retailer’s negotiated rates.

Smaller retailers often paid higher merchant fees to accept contactless payments. Without clear regulations on how much they could charge,

recent headlines have shown firms charging surcharges as high as 8% on parking, 6.25% at the dentist, 4% for a shuttle service, and so on.

The Commerce Commission says that surcharges should be no more than the additional cost of accepting that particular payment method. The 2022 Act gave the ComCom the power to regulate and monitor these fees to ensure fair pricing.

“We would expect any surcharges to be no more than 0.7% for contactless debit card payments or 1.5-2% for credit card payments,” the Commission says. “Many

merchants only have one rate, so we consider any surcharge above 2% is hard to justify.”

To ensure transparency and fairness in how surcharges are applied, the Commerce Commission released a draft decision aimed at regulating excessive payment fees, which could save Kiwis over $260 million annually.

“This work is the next step to further reduce, and simplify, payment costs for New Zealand businesses and to save merchants and consumers a considerable amount of money,” says Commission chair John Small.

They acknowledge that some retailers set a flat-rate surcharge well above their actual payment processing fees, effectively turning it into an extra charge for convenience rather than a necessary cost recovery.

While large corporations can negotiate lower rates with banks and payment providers, smaller businesses often face higher costs per transaction, making surcharges a way to stay competitive in a tight-margin environment. These small firms argue that absorbing transaction fees isn’t always feasible. “Businesses shouldn’t charge their customers more than what it costs

“Businesses shouldn’t charge their customers more than what it costs them to accept a card payment. Unfortunately, as shoppers, we have no way of telling what businesses are getting charged, so it’s difficult to tell if we’re being ripped off.”

them to accept a card payment. Unfortunately, as shoppers, we have no way of telling what businesses are getting charged, so it’s difficult to tell if we’re being ripped off,” says Jessica Walker, Consumer NZ campaigns manager.

Some retailers have scrapped fees altogether amid growing public pressure for them to remove or at least reduce their surcharges. Others have shifted their pricing strategy, increasing overall prices slightly to compensate rather than tacking on an explicit surcharge.

The Commerce Commission estimates payWave takes hundreds of millions out of Kiwis’ pockets each year and will make moves to decrease this figure this year. They recommend merchants shop around for the bank that provides them with the best payment services.

In the meantime, consumers are left weighing convenience against cost. Is it worth paying extra for a tap-and-go transaction? Or will more people revert to using cash and EFTPOS to avoid these fees? One thing is certain: as digital payments continue to dominate, the debate over who should bear the cost isn’t going away anytime soon. CT

Late payments costing small Kiwi companies a fortune

Xero has revealed a dramatic 81% rise in the cost of late payments affecting Kiwi small businesses. The amount increased from an estimated $456 million in 2021 to $827 million in 2023.

The information is part of the Xero Small Business Insights programme, which uses anonymised and aggregated data to track small business performance and improve understanding of their challenges.

Bridget Snelling manages Xero Aotearoa New Zealand. She says the rise in late payments has resulted in a significant amount of money being held up, rather than

flowing into small businesses, due to large corporations failing to make timely payments.

“Many larger organisations treat the small business community like a source of easily accessible capital by delaying payments to support their own operations,” she says.

The issue of late payments was acknowledged when the Business Payment Practices Act 2023 was repealed, with the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment recognising the detrimental impact of delayed payments from larger companies.

“Many larger organisations treat the small business community like a source of easily accessible capital by delaying payments to support their own operations.”

“The consequences of these delays are serious, locking valuable funds out of the small business economy, limiting growth, and hindering the success of new businesses,” Bridget says.

Xero has long advocated for improvements in payment practices,

We provide a friendly atmosphere for all our members, member's guests and affiliated members. We offer something for everyone including a great main bar lounge with a million-dollar view, gaming room with 11 gaming machines, pool table, 3 dart boards, plenty of big screen TV's, an excellent outdoor area with kid's playground and our bistro where we offer fantastic affordable meals (03) 445-1169 | cromwelltc@xtra.co.nz | www.cromwelltownandcountryclub.co.nz

urging all large businesses to commit to paying invoices within 10 business days— a policy Xero has followed with its own small business invoices.

This aligns with the New Zealand government’s commitment, where 95% of government agencies meet this benchmark.

Inflation’s impact on small businesses

Despite payment timelines remaining relatively unchanged from 2021

to 2023, small businesses were still heavily impacted by the high inflationary environment.

“With high inflation and interest rates, maintaining positive cash flow becomes even more critical. In 2023, late payments hit small businesses particularly hard,” Bridget says.

“These factors are a major reason why late payments cost Kiwi small businesses over $800 million last year,” she explains.

Digital solutions to improve payment practices

While economic conditions remain tough, Bridget points out that there are opportunities for growth in the small business sector.

“We encourage small businesses to collaborate with their accountants or bookkeepers to manage rising costs, streamline expenses, and explore the many digital tools available to overcome the common barriers to late or missed payments.

“With high inflation and interest rates, maintaining positive cash flow becomes even more critical. In 2023, late payments hit small businesses particularly hard.”

This will help them recover their costs faster,” she says.

Research from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research shows that a 20% increase in the adoption of cloud-based business tools could add up to $7.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP annually, thanks to enhanced productivity.

“Digitalisation plays a key role in improving payment processes for Kiwi small businesses. It’s crucial that we support them in embracing digital solutions, like eInvoicing and pay-now buttons, to help unlock their full economic potential.” CT

Welcome to Powerhouse Movers Ltd, we hope to meet you soon

Greetings from the Powerhouse Movers team. We are a small family-owned business that takes great pride in the work we do.

From delivering and installing, to providing the friendliest and most helpful customer service and maintenance of a range of Spa pools. Since starting our small business in February 2021, we have delivered swim spas, spas and jacuzzis to many satisfied customers for Spa World, throughout most of the South Island. Before this I was employed by Vortex Spas to provide

the same services but throughout New Zealand either working solo or with a partner. All the skills and knowledge that I gained, gave me the confidence and belief to start my own business.

We have the best possible working relationship with Spa World. This reflects in our customer service and positive feedback. Our relationship has a strong foundation of trust

making my decision to relocate my family from Auckland to work in beautiful Otuatahi Christchurch, when asked, an easy yes. I eventually started and built my business Powerhouse Movers Ltd with the support and guidance of Spa World. For a couple of years, we provided our services for all the South Island now our services are within and around Otautahi.

My family and I are of Pacific ethnicity and highly motivated to provide the best hospitality and care for our customers, as we would for our own family. We are respectfully considerate of our elderly customers and pay extra attention to their individual delivery and needs. I never second-guess

our service; top customer service is what we stake our business on. I believe this to be an important factor to our financial survival. Bye for now, talk soon.

The cost of convenience

For Kiwi consumers, Afterpay has become a popular choice for Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services, making it easier for customers to spread out the cost of their purchases. For small businesses, it’s been a bit of a double-edged sword. While Afterpay can help them attract more customers and increase sales, it also comes with challenges that could impact their long-term success.

One big draw of Afterpay is that it helps small businesses compete with larger retailers. By offering a payment option that splits the cost into smaller instalments, businesses can encourage customers to make purchases they might otherwise hold off on. As of 2024, around 5,000 New Zealand merchants had added Afterpay to their checkout

options. It’s been shown to improve conversion rates by up to 20% and increase the average amount customers spend by 30%. For a small business, that’s a significant boost.

Another advantage is cash flow. When customers use Afterpay, businesses get paid upfront in full, while Afterpay handles the repayments. This can be a lifesaver for small businesses trying to manage expenses like inventory and wages. They don’t have to worry about customers defaulting because that’s Afterpay’s responsibility.

But all of this comes at a price. Afterpay charges businesses a fee of 4% to 6% on each transaction. Compared to traditional credit card fees, which are usually 1% to 3%, that’s a big chunk of profit. For small businesses with tight margins, these fees can eat into the extra sales they’re getting.

There’s also the risk of becoming too dependent on Afterpay. If a business focuses too much on promoting BNPL options, they might attract customers who are stretched financially. While this can drive sales in the short term, it might not be

Afterpay is a mixed bag for small businesses. It can help boost sales and cash flow, but the fees and risks mean it’s not a magic solution.

sustainable if those customers cut back on spending later or struggle to pay off their debts.

Another concern is the potential for bad PR. BNPL services like Afterpay have been criticised for encouraging people to spend beyond their means. In 2023, a study found that over 10% of New Zealand consumers had missed a BNPL payment. If a business relies heavily on Afterpay, it could be seen as contributing to this problem, which might hurt its reputation.

Competition is another challenge. Afterpay is one of the biggest BNPL providers, but it’s not the only one. Other companies like Zip or Klarna offer similar services, and some have lower fees or different features. For small businesses, choosing the right platform—or juggling multiple ones—can be tricky and time-consuming.

Even with these downsides, many small businesses see Afterpay as a valuable tool. It’s especially effective for reaching younger customers who prefer digital payment options and don’t use credit cards as much. Plus, Afterpay provides data on customer spending habits, which businesses can use to improve their marketing and better understand their audience.

Afterpay is a mixed bag for small businesses. It can help boost sales and cash flow, but the fees and risks mean it’s not a magic solution. To make the most of it, businesses need to be smart about how they use Afterpay, balancing its benefits with other strategies and payment options. By doing so, they can take advantage of what Afterpay offers without letting it become a liability. CT

Zooming in on the problem Minimising virtual meeting disruption

A recent study by recruitment company Robert Walters has revealed that 80% of Kiwi professionals experience interruptions to their workday due to virtual meetings, with 41% of them stating this happens “regularly.”

The research, which surveyed 1,000 white-collar professionals in New Zealand, highlights how virtual meetings are increasingly interrupting employees’ focus and work efficiency.

The findings show that while 80% of respondents experience interruptions due to virtual meetings, 41% say this happens regularly and 39% occasionally. Only 18% of people reported minimal disruption, and 2% were uncertain.

Just last month, online retailer ASOS warned that the shift from in-person to virtual meetings was negatively affecting its performance.

Shay Peters, CEO of Robert Walters Australia and New Zealand, says

“During the pandemic, virtual meetings were crucial in maintaining connections with colleagues. However, many continue to schedule Zoom or Teams meetings for tasks that could be handled more efficiently via email or a brief message. These unnecessary meetings can disrupt our workflow and hurt productivity.”

Time lost in virtual meetings

The study also found that a significant portion of professionals’ workdays is spent in virtual meetings. In Australia, 25% of professionals attend more than five virtual meetings daily, with 18% having up to four meetings.

Given that each video call can last up to 30 minutes, this means professionals are losing between two to two-and-a-half hours of their workday to virtual meetings.

According to research by Slack, meetings that exceed two hours in a workday can significantly reduce productivity.

Shay adds, “Meetings are important, but leaders need to ensure that virtual meetings are truly adding value and not hindering efficiency.”

“Remote work can hinder connection and collaboration, which are essential for innovation and problem-solving. When teams work remotely and rely on video calls, they miss out on crucial opportunities to brainstorm and collaborate faceto-face.”

“The absence of in-person interactions is creating issues. Virtual meetings make it hard to gauge participants’ emotions, as key non-verbal cues like body language are missing.”

Productivity concerns

The study further examined the productivity of virtual meetings. While 51% of respondents said the productivity of virtual meetings depends on the meeting topic, 23% felt virtual meetings were either somewhat or not productive at all.

“The success of a virtual meeting depends on several factors, such as the organiser, the number of participants, the clarity of the agenda, and the engagement of those involved. Without face-to-face interaction, virtual meetings often lack non-verbal cues, which can lead to disengagement and missed opportunities for connection,” Shay says.

The case for increased inoffice presence

The report stresses the importance of increasing in-office presence to reduce disruptions caused by remote or hybrid work. The experts argue that working in an office allows for spontaneous in-person conversations that would otherwise be held in virtual meetings.

“Remote work can hinder connection and collaboration, which are essential for innovation and problem-solving. When teams work remotely and rely on video calls, they miss out on crucial opportunities to brainstorm and collaborate face-to-face,” Shay adds.

Virtual meetings, while often necessary, can impose a rigid structure on the workday, lacking the variety that in-office interactions offer. Simple activities, like walking around the office or greeting colleagues, can provide breaks that prevent burnout and foster creativity.

Tips for enhancing productivity

To improve virtual meeting productivity, the research suggests setting clear agendas. This helps determine whether a meeting is necessary or if the objectives can be accomplished via email.

Shay also emphasises the need for training on virtual meetings. “As work evolves, our skills must adapt. Training on maximising productivity in virtual meetings is essential, and something many workplaces haven’t prioritised until now.”

Robert Walters Australia and New Zealand CEO Shay Peters

Clear communication is key for any successful workplace. When scheduling virtual meetings, it’s important to consider colleagues’ workloads and ensure the meeting is worthwhile. Similarly, employees should feel comfortable raising concerns about the frequency and productivity of these meetings. A tailored approach is necessary to

help individuals get the most out of their workday and prevent burnout.

The specialists also encourage increased office presence. “The shift to remote work has its drawbacks. Individuals may miss valuable in-person interactions that foster collaboration and innovation. It’s important for employees to

Plumbing Specialists since 1963

recognise the benefits of working from the office and the opportunities it presents.”

The rise of remote work necessitates additional training and mindful communication to optimise productivity and collaboration. As teams become more virtual, it’s crucial to reassess

Key findings:

• 80% of respondents face workday disruptions from virtual meetings, with 41% reporting it happens frequently

• 18% of professionals have more than four meetings in a single day, losing about two hours of worktime daily

• 51% of respondents say the productivity of virtual meetings depends on the subject matter, while 23% consider them either somewhat productive or not productive at all

• The CEO urges an increased in-office presence to boost productivity and enhance meeting outcomes.

“What makes New Zealand a special place is indigeneity. We’re more alike than different. I see business as a vessel for sharing culture and minimising division.”

Not your typical chippy

Fush does more than serve fish and chips. Passionate about community and normalising te reo Maori, the family-owned business has become a local obsession. But it didn’t happen overnight, Anton Matthews tells CT.

Jess and Anton first met while working in hospitality; both were training to become teachers. In time, they found themselves at a crossroads—teaching and hospitality weren’t entirely fulfilling their dreams, and with a baby on the way, it was time to take a leap of faith.

Anton’s whanau purchased Joe’s Garage Sumner in 2012, marking the start of their entrepreneurial journey. By 2015, they expanded their presence with Joe’s Garage Wigram, but they still felt something was missing. Franchising taught them invaluable lessons: improvisation, how to actually pay attention to guests and their needs, and how to provide great service, to name a few.

But the ideas they wanted to bring to life extended beyond the boundaries of a franchise. And so, in 2016, Jess, Anton, and his sister Maia launched Fush. At the heart of their business is a simple but powerful philosophy: people first.

“We’re better together,” Anton says. The goal is to create “safe spaces to share stories” and “businesses that exist within communities and deliver more value than a simple transaction.

“What makes New Zealand a special place is indigeneity. We’re more alike than different. I see business as a vessel for sharing culture and minimising division.”

Fush does just that. Their business is built and operated on a kaupapa where values such as aroha, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga are central.

“Core to what we do is centring others in our choices,” Anton says.

“We earn mana by consistently putting other people first. Earning mana starts with great manaakitanga.” By building their business on a platform of thoughtful, people-centred choices, Fush has thrived. Their approach has paid off, but it hasn’t come without challenges. Like most of the industry, they’ve had to navigate tightening margins and increasing costs, making it harder to price their offerings accordingly.

In the last 18 months, onboarding carefully has also become a focus. Their kaimahi is everything. “Past staffing issues showed how important it is to have the right seats on the bus. Everyone in any business should truly live and breathe its kaupapa.”

Business growth has opened space to focus more on onboarding, but also on the bigger picture. The Hustle Group has since expanded to launch Tatou Tatou, a B2B corporate catering service, and recently opened a café and Fush bar at Christchurch Airport.

As a father, husband, and community leader, Anton wants to inspire future generations to embrace their Maoritanga. “Life’s about taking chances. I want to lead by example for my tamariki.”

The goal for 2025 is ambitious: $10 million in top-line revenue. But success for them goes beyond the numbers—it’s about the impact they can have on industry, on community, on people. CT

Empty, clean and loose

All containers need to be empty, clean and loose in the bin (not bagged). All lids must be put in the rubbish.

Look for the triangle

Plastic bottles and containers have a plastic code, usually on the bottom inside a triangle. This code tells us the type of plastic it is and whether or not it can be recycled. We can only accept plastic types 1, 2 and 5.

Paper and cardboard

Paper and cardboard needs to be flat not crumpled up and must be clean with no food or foodstaining. We can accept clean and empty pizza boxes in the recycling. Those with oil or food on the cardboard can go in your worm farm or compost, otherwise put them in the rubbish.

Size does matter

We can only take paper that’s envelope sized or larger; and plastic containers sized from 100

Coffee cups are a no-no Take-away coffee cups and lids cannot be recycled.

If you have any reusable items, drop them off to a charity or recovery park. Mobile phones, scrap metal, whiteware and clean polystyrene packaging can typically be dropped off for free. Soft plastics can be taken to a shop with Soft Plastics Recycling. Rubbish is rubbish! Rubbish, such as nappies and plastic strapping must go in the rubbish bin. Food scraps can go in your organics bin, worm farm or compost.

A decade of deep tech Fuelling New Zealand’s emerging innovators

Callaghan Innovation’s Deep Tech Incubator Programme has played a pivotal role in supporting nearly half of the deep tech startups established in Aotearoa during the past decade.

The term ‘deep tech’ refers to advanced technologies that are founded on significant scientific or engineering innovation, typically aimed at addressing complex global challenges like climate change, food security, and disease.

From its inception in 2014 until 2023, the programme has supported 80 out of 162 new deep-tech startups, according to data from New Zealand Growth Capital Partners and Young Company Finance.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate the success of Kiwi deep tech innovators who have participated in the programme over the past decade,” says Celeste Peh, Deep Tech Incubator Programme Manager.

“New Zealand is home to exceptional engineering, scientific expertise, and entrepreneurial talent, and it’s exciting to see how these strengths are being leveraged in the deep tech space.”

The challenges of deep tech innovation

Deep tech ventures require extensive research, development, and substantial investment to succeed, making their innovation journey more prolonged and challenging.

“Because deep tech startups push the boundaries of science and engineering, they are often seen as too risky for private investors, especially in the early stages,” Celeste says.

Successful applicants to the programme receive at least $1 million in funding, which includes a repayable grant of $750,000. This support helps startups navigate the critical early phase of their development. They also gain access to one of five incubators tailored to various sectors, from agri-tech to biotech.

Impactful success stories

One notable success story is Scentian Bio, a spin-out from Plant

“Because deep tech startups push the boundaries of science and engineering, they are often seen as too risky for private investors, especially in the early stages,”
- Celeste Peh

& Food Research, which joined the programme to develop advanced biosensors for detecting a wide range of chemical compounds with high sensitivity.

This technology has the potential to impact industries such as agriculture, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food safety.

“We aim to build a multibillion-dollar company right here in New Zealand, changing lives globally,” says CEO Jonathan Good.

“Deep tech is a challenging field, but the repayable grant from the Deep Tech Incubator Programme was a game-changer for us, enabling us to demonstrate key technology proofs and secure further capital.”

Celeste Peh reflects, “It’s incredibly rewarding to see that 80% of startups raised follow-on investments after completing the programme.

Additionally, private investment has multiplied by 8.6 times the amount of public repayable grant funding over the last decade.”

Global connections and growth

Bridgewest Ventures, one of the programme’s five partners, specialises in supporting deep tech startups across various sectors. They recognised New Zealand as an ideal emerging market due to its top-tier universities and businessfriendly environment.

“Through the Deep Tech Incubator Programme, New Zealand has become an integral part of the Bridgewest global ecosystem,” says Bridgewest Ventures portfolio investment manager, Kathryn de Ridder.

Celeste Peh also notes, “We were encouraged to see that 39% of participating startups were women-led or co-led, nearly double the national average of 21% for Kiwi startups with a female founder.”

Exciting times await The future is incredibly promising, with new ventures and big ideas set to emerge from the programme in the years to come.

“The science and technology being developed are so advanced, we can’t fully predict their impact,” Celeste says.

“What’s clear is that with the right support and investment, Kiwi innovators will play a key role in addressing global challenges and driving New Zealand’s economic growth.”

“We’re excited to continue supporting early-stage deep tech startups as they tackle global issues, create high-wage jobs, and contribute to valuable export earnings,” she concludes.

Key highlights from the Deep Tech Incubator Programme thus far:

1. The programme contributed to 49% of total new deep tech deals (80 out of 162 deals)

2. Cumulative private investment was 8.6 times the amount of public repayable grant funding ($381M private vs $44M public)

3. 38% of startups were womenled or co-led, nearly double the national average of 21%

4. 80% of startups raised follow-on investment after completing the programme

5. The programme supported 39 public research organisation spinouts.

The double-edged sword of AI Job creation and loss in the new tech era

In recent years, the growth of artificial intelligence has been rapid, boosting efficiency and creating a competitive advantage for businesses that have leveraged this technology into the workplace.

According to the World Economic Forum, over the course of the next five years, 85 million jobs will be lost due to the workforce’s fasterthan-anticipated automation.

97 million new jobs will be created by the robot revolution, but governments and corporations will need to help the communities most at risk from upheaval.

However, many have rebutted against using AI despite its various benefits, arguing that protecting traditional revenue streams against

automation is more valuable than essentially embracing the transformation of our technological landscape.

A research study conducted at the University of Otago on the impact AI will have on jobs and work in New Zealand found that workplace AI will have three main effects over the next ten to twenty years such as administration work, task performance and productivity enhancement and the creation of new jobs. The creation of new jobs includes coding, developing and managing AI systems, and data preparation for AI training.

Last year, Datacom commissioned its annual survey of 200 New Zealand senior business leaders to understand the ongoing rates of AI adoption, the maturity of existing AI governance and security, the appetite for AIspecific legislation, and the experiences with AI usage.

Comparing the data surveyed from 2023 to 2024, the shift in New Zealand businesses using any form of AI jumped from 48% in 2023 to 66% in 2024, with 80% also saying that AI is having a positive impact on their business operations.

But despite the jump in senior business leaders moving towards AI, New Zealand sits in 40th place in global AI readiness rankings after previously being at 9th.

The utilisation of AI in business indeed comes with its pros, such as increased efficiency and productivity, cost savings by optimising operations, and identifying patterns and trends that humans might miss.

In saying this, while AI has significant advantages, humans still hold strengths like creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, adaptability and the ability to understand social cues.

The utilisation of AI in business indeed comes with its pros, such as increased efficiency and productivity, cost savings by optimising operations, and identifying patterns and trends that humans might miss.

So maybe the question stands in how rather than when and if. Technology’s impact will inevitably grow, changing the way we work and approach tasks, but how much should we let it and at what cost? CT

Between the towering Aoraki Mount Cook and the mystical Moeraki boulders lies a world of thrilling adventures, rich heritage, and award-winning hospitality.

While the region is home to New Zealand’s longest and most stunning cycle trails – Alps to Ocean - this magnificent landscape is on an unforgettable road trip. Whether you start from Dunedin (90 minutes drive away) or Christchurch (a scenic three-hour drive), your camera and walking shoes will be your most essential companions.

To get to your start and end point, we recommend travellers take the scenic route off State Highway 1 to the historic coastal town of Ōamaru – known for its historic Victorian precinct, you’ll find award-winning restaurants and cafes throughout. Fuel up for a ride on a real Penny Farthing, dive deep into history at the Waitaki Museum or Whitestone City, then relish in the downtime wandering through the galleries and boutiques.

For the Wildlife Wanderers

For a slice of nature and wildlife, check out the world’s smallest penguins at the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony. See the little blue penguins in their natural environment supported by a team of researchers who pride themselves on their conservation efforts. Learn about their lifestyles from the resident penguin experts and watch the little blues return home at dusk after a long day fishing at sea.

For the Active Adventurers

It’s in Ōamaru we would recommend getting the bike ready to go for the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail – from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, it’s an epic journey for the adventurer. Whether you decide to do all of it or just sections of it, rent an e-bike or bring your own two wheels, you’re sure to pass through stunning views and the most intriguing townships.

If you’re on a road trip, you can park your motorhome or caravan at the Ōamaru Top 10 Holiday Park located opposite the Ōamaru Public Gardens. If the mountains are calling, drive (or cycle) inland to the Waitaki Valley and let the outdoor adventure truly begin.

Covering a large part of the Waitaki region and spanning 7,214 square kilometres is New Zealand’s first UNESCO Global Geopark—Waitaki Whitestone. This remarkable landscape boasts breathtaking limestone cliffs, towering rock formations, and ancient fossils, showcasing the region’s rich geological heritage. You can uncover the geopark’s wonders as you wind through charming historic towns, with hidden gems around every bend.

For the Heritage Enthusiasts

For an unforgettable photo opportunity, take a break at Anatini. Explore the limestone caves and location of Aslan’s camp in the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe before driving a few minutes down the road to nature’s playground, Elephant Rocks. Dig for fossils at Vanished World Centre or take a walk across wetlands and hilltops.

A trip to the Takiroa Māori Rock Art Site, located just a few minutes from the Vanished World Centre, is a fascinating journey into the region’s past. Estimated to be over 500 years old, the drawings tell stories of early Māori settlement.

Stop in at cosy pubs or historic hotels, chic boutiques and local wine bars before settling in for the night at a Waitaki Lakes campsite. With six tranquil lakeside campsites to choose from, wake up to birdsong and a stove-top coffee or pick up a barista-made cup at a local favourite, Waitaki Braids café.

As you continue up Waitaki, and find yourself in the small township of Ōtemātātā, it’s another scenic detour winding past two of New Zealand’s most impressive earth dams. The first is Benmore Dam, a massive structure holding back the deep blue waters of Lake Benmore. A nearby lookout offers breathtaking panoramic views of the dam and its hydroelectric power station. It’s a spectacular sight, especially at sunrise or sunset when the landscape glows.

The nearby Benmore Peninsula Track offers an easy yet rewarding walk, winding through native bush with breathtaking lookouts over the lake—perfect for stretching your legs after a day of adventuring. Whether you’re on foot, bike, or just stopping for a scenic break, this is one of Waitaki’s hidden gems.

Back in the car, and the sealed road follows the shoreline of Lake Aviemore, hugging its waters before crossing the Aviemore Dam and reconnecting with the main route.

For the Memory Makers

Nestled at the junction of the Waitaki and Mackenzie regions, you’ll find the charming town of Ōmārama, known for its world-class gliding, where adventurers can soar with breathtaking views of the Southern Alps.

But there’s more to this small town than just the skies—visitors can unwind at Hot Tubs Ōmārama, where private, wood-fired

tubs offer the ultimate relaxation under star-filled skies. The nearby Clay Cliffs, with their towering, wind-carved formations, provide a striking landscape for exploration. Whether you’re chasing adventure or looking for a peaceful retreat, Ōmārama is a must-visit destination on your Waitaki journey.

Continue on towards the Mackenzie District, or if you’ve been up for it, turn the bike around on the Alps 2 Ocean trail, heading back towards thriving Ōamaru.

Satellite tech boost for the local economy

Timaru businesses are being encouraged to look at the benefits new satellite technology may offer in a bid to help boost the local economy.

Venture Timaru and Toitu Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) are working together to engage local businesses set to benefit from the Southern Positioning Augmentation Network (SouthPAN).

SouthPAN is a free service that improves GPS accuracy from 5-10m to less than a metre, and in some cases as little as 10cm.

Venture Timaru chief executive, Nigel Davenport, says SouthPAN offers benefits to a range of industries that could do with a helping hand in this challenging economic environment.

“This new and enhanced positioning technology will benefit us all, whether in our personal or working lives.

“It will provide significant benefits for a number of industries, from agriculture through to forestry, maritime, aviation, and emergency services, by improving productivity and reducing costs.

“We’re very keen to see local businesses get involved with SouthPAN and see how it can

benefit them, so urge anyone interested to get in touch with us,” Nigel says.

He sees SouthPAN and the benefits it will bring being an integral part of the district’s long-term vision to grow the economy and community.

“This technology will be a pivotal resource in enabling faster, more precise and efficient operations, helping us all drive cost reductions and productivity improvements. These will undoubtedly all feature

prominently in our Towards 2050 Plan, which is currently under development for our district.”

Timaru’s Richard Pearse Airport is also supporting the initiative, recognising the potential benefits.

Timaru’s Richard Pearse Airport chief executive Andrew Dixon, says the airport is eager to utilise SouthPAN, which will have a number of benefits to the aviation industry once safety of life certification is achieved by 2028.

“SouthPAN will provide a significant safety and usability upgrade for pilots using the airport, as it offers them a greater level of positioning data than was ever available before. For travellers this is a positive, as it’s likely to improve the reliability of scheduled flights through fewer weather disruptions.”

The airport has been selected as one of five locations across New Zealand where new reference stations will be installed later this year.

The station will be part of a new dedicated network, replacing infrastructure that is delivering SouthPAN’s freely available services.

LINZ director – SouthPAN, Michael Appleyard, says LINZ is looking forward to working with businesses in Timaru and seeing how SouthPAN can help.

“Through utilising SouthPAN, New Zealanders can unlock new economic opportunities, improve productivity and enhance the way we navigate everyday life.

“We’re already hearing the benefits from early users in the maritime, forestry and horticulture industries, and this is just the beginning.

“We’re keen to hear from any businesses interested in finding out how SouthPAN can help them and their bottom line.”

About SouthPAN

SouthPAN is a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) that enhances positioning and navigation across New Zealand and Australia. The system is a joint initiative between the New Zealand and

Australian governments, led by LINZ and Geoscience Australia.

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), such as GPS, are essential for positioning, navigation, and timing, playing a critical role in our daily lives. A wide range of devices and systems depend on GPS data to deliver services we rely on every day.

SouthPAN is part of New Zealand’s investment in critical positioning infrastructure, enhancing precise positioning and location capabilities for all our communities and businesses to benefit from.

SouthPAN can support communities and businesses in the following ways:

• Aviation: Enable safer flights in more challenging weather conditions and help reduce flight delays and cancellations

• Agriculture: Increase productivity and reduce costs by enabling less cost-prohibitive access to precision farming techniques and capabilities

• Forestry: Enhance the safety, productivity and efficiency of forestry operations

• Maritime: Improve the safety and route efficiency of maritime navigation and activities

• Emergency services: Enable faster and more accurate response times during emergencies.

Timaru District Council marks the opening of new organics processing facility

The Timaru District Council and Enviro NZ have announced the opening of a state-of-the-art organics processing facility, marking a significant milestone in the region’s sustainability efforts.

This new multimillion-dollar facility at the Redruth Resource Recovery Park in Timaru was developed by Enviro NZ and is set to transform how we handle green waste both in this district and the wider region.

The food and garden organic material collected kerbside in green bins is transformed into valuable compost. At the plant’s opening, Chris Aughton CEO of Enviro NZ, said the plant has the dual benefit of enabling the recovery and reuse of valuable materials at the same time as reducing emissions from the landfill.

“The opening of the new organics processing facility marks a significant sustainability milestone

for the region, and Enviro NZ is proud to be a part of this initiative and working alongside the Timaru District Council.

“By producing compost from food and garden organic material, the state-of-the-art facility is transforming valuable natural resources that would otherwise be lost if disposed of in the more traditional way.

“It is an example of a truly successful circular economy in action returning discarded food and garden organics back to the soil as compost which in turn produces more food.

“It really is a sustainability friendly solution, which is a win, win for the community and also the environment.”

The facility will process approximately 16,000 tonnes of green waste from South Canterbury in the next 12 months, producing around 6,000 tonnes of compost. The process involves a 21-day period in ECS bunkers, followed by a 12-week maturation phase.

The community can purchase compost in trailer loads or bags, with the balance sold for use on local farms for soil remediation.

Timaru District Council group manager infrastructure, Andrew Dixon, highlighted the positive impact of the facility on the wider region.

“This new organics processing facility is a fantastic development for our region. It not only supports our sustainability goals but also provides a valuable resource for our local farmers and gardeners.”

The green organics bin program, part of the Timaru District Council’s waste minimisation efforts, allows residents to dispose of garden and food waste. “Every bit of organic waste we can divert from landfill is a major saving to our residents as it both lengthens the life of our landfill and avoids us having to pay waste levies,” Andrew added. Mapping the benefits of regional ecosystem services

Which parts of Rolleston have the most trees and shade? Where are the greatest numbers of bird species to be found? Who’s got the best views? And who lives closest to green spaces? Ten new maps of ecosystem services are now available online to answer these questions.

The Selwyn District Council and Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research have teamed up to map ecosystem services – the benefits provided by nature for humans – across Rolleston, as part of a broader research programme to support the future management of Selwyn’s blue-green network of waterways and parks.

The modelling will support future work by both the Greater Christchurch Partnership and the Council through Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn, its 50-100 year strategic direction for the future of the district.

The Greater Christchurch Spatial Plan, which the Council adopted in March, includes directions and actions the partners have agreed to take to protect and develop the Greater Christchurch blue-green network – which Rolleston is a part of – Council executive director development and growth Robert Love says.

“Ecosystems have a huge impact on our health and well-being. When we understand the blue-green network we can make better, more informed decisions to improve the network and the benefits from nature and ecosystems, ultimately improving our health and well-being.”

Council staff worked closely with Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research to model the ecosystem services and develop the ten maps. Manaaki Whenua’s modelling contribution was funded through their Strategic Science Investment Fund, which is funding provided by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The Council is also working on developing a broader understanding of the blue-green network across Waikirikiri Selwyn to inform the development of Area Plans and a Blue-Green Network Plan to put into action the strategic direction from Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn. CT

The ten maps are:

• Capacity of ecosystems to soak up rainwater

• Carbon stock in tree biomass

• Removal of air pollution by ecosystems

• Soil erosion prevention

• Shade provision by trees

• Ultraviolet protection by trees

• Viewshed (how far views extend from any point)

• Number of bird species likely to be seen

• Distance to a large area of green space

• Distance to any type of green space.

A nature-inspired vision for Selwyn District Park

Grassy open spaces, green leafy trees, moving through natural areas, the feedback is in, people want to be immersed in nature, a

Following support through the Long-Term Plan, the Selwyn District Council secured land on the eastern outskirts of Rolleston in 2018, to transform it into a large-scale public park to accommodate the needs of our rapidly growing community.

Between February and March 2024, the Council gathered feedback from the community through the Plant a Park campaign, on what you wanted to see in the Selwyn District Park. With over 1,650 online responses, the overwhelming feedback from the public has shown four key priorities for the new Selwyn District Park.

The four priorities are natural areas and planting, tracks and trails, grassy open spaces, and range of play opportunities.

1. Natural areas and planting

People want to be immersed in nature. To hear the birds, smell the flowers, and see green leafy trees. With a large area to work in, the Selwyn District Park has the space to accommodate multiple green areas, from walking tracks underneath large tree canopies to gardens filled with native and exotic flora, and sister city planting collections. Picnic areas with BBQs, seats, tables, and shade will allow everyone in the community to access nature.

2. Tracks and trails

Whether you are walking, running, cycling, or scootering, various tracks and trails will make your journey through the Selwyn District Park interesting and varied. Tracks and trails will be constructed with different surface treatments to cater for a range of experiences. Walking

The four priorities are natural areas and planting, tracks and trails, grassy open spaces, and range of play opportunities.

through nature ties in with the top priority of wanting natural areas.

3. Grassy open space

Grassy open spaces will include multipurpose areas for informal recreation such as kicking a ball or flying a kite, as well as large community events, such as Selwyn Sounds and the Selwyn Fireworks Spectacular, which are increasing in popularity. A large open space in the Selwyn District Park will allow events like these to be held in a reserve designed with these events in mind. These spaces can also be used for school cross-country and

running events. Foster Park will remain Selwyn’s premier sports park, but there will be some provision of sports fields within the Selwyn District Park development, to cater for growth in some sporting codes and overflow for larger tournaments.

4. Range of play opportunities

The Selwyn District Park will accommodate a range of play opportunities. Building quality homes with a personal touch

Hallmark Homes has built a strong reputation in Canterbury for delivering well-crafted homes that suit every stage of life.

Whether it’s a first home, an investment property, or a highend architectural build, the team prides itself on working closely with clients to bring their vision to life. With years of experience and a commitment to quality, Hallmark Homes makes the building process straightforward and stress-free.

One of Hallmark Homes’ recent standout projects is a luxury home in Tai Tapu, featuring striking cathedral ceilings lined with Macrocarpa timber. What makes this home extra special is that the timber was sourced from the owner’s family farm, adding a personal touch to the design.

Using client-supplied materials comes with its own challenges, including ensuring they are properly treated and fit seamlessly into the build. However, Hallmark Homes worked closely with the owners to make sure everything met their high standards. The end result is a stunning home that combines quality craftsmanship with sentimental value—a great example of the company’s ability to create unique and meaningful spaces.

Building a home can feel overwhelming, but Hallmark Homes takes the stress out of the process by guiding clients every step of the way. Whether someone wants to be hands-on or take a step back, the team is flexible and ensures everything runs smoothly.

Hallmark Homes goes above and beyond by providing 3D renders of homes in the client’s chosen colours. This allows homeowners

to see exactly what their finished house will look like before construction even begins, making decisions easier and ensuring there are no surprises.

A key difference with Hallmark Homes is their attention to detail, particularly when it comes to quality control. Unlike many other builders, they have two dedicated project managers overseeing each home.

Senior project manager Chris, with over 30 years of experience, manages the construction side of things, ensuring that workmanship meets their high standards. When the build reaches the painting and finishing stage, Debbie, their finishing project manager, takes over. With decades of experience and a sharp eye for detail, she makes sure every aspect of the home is finished to perfection before handing it over to the client.

Their motto says it all: “If it’s not good enough for our home, it’s not good enough for yours.”

With extensive practical experience and an intimate knowledge of the Canterbury region, we’re capable of handling all your drainage requirements.

At Hallmark Homes, clients aren’t just numbers. The team builds long-term relationships with homeowners, making sure communication is clear, questions are answered quickly, and expectations are met—or exceeded.

Clients often mention how much they appreciate the team’s transparency and willingness to go the extra mile. This feedback has shaped how the company operates, reinforcing the importance of flexibility, good communication, and putting the customer first.

Hallmark Homes’ commitment to quality has earned them multiple awards over the years, including a recent Gold and Top 100 award for

their Oakbridge Showhome in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. Their consistent success in these awards reflects their dedication to building great homes.

Whether you’re looking for a simple first home, an investment property, or a custom luxury build, Hallmark Homes has the expertise and experience to bring your dream to life—without the hassle. CT

The hidden threat that requires expert hands

Asbestos remains a hidden hazard in many older buildings, posing serious health risks when disturbed. Whether demolishing or preparing a site for redevelopment, the presence of asbestos demands expert handling.

City Salvage Contractors are leaders in demolition, site preparation, and accredited asbestos removal, ensuring that hazardous materials are managed safely and in compliance with New Zealand’s strict regulations.

Despite being banned in New Zealand for importation and use in new construction since 2016, asbestos is still present in thousands of homes, commercial buildings, and industrial sites built before the 2000s. Found in roofing, insulation, wall claddings, and flooring, asbestos can be deadly when fibres

become airborne during renovations or demolition. Inhalation of asbestos fibres is linked to severe diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, making professional removal essential.

Organisations such as Chemcare, Reform Environmental, CCTA, and NZDAA stress the importance of engaging certified professionals for asbestos demolition and removal. Attempting to remove asbestos without proper containment, protective equipment, and disposal methods can lead to significant health risks for workers, occupants, and the surrounding community.

City Salvage Contractors provide fully accredited asbestos removal services, adhering to the highest safety standards and government regulations. Their team is extensively trained in asbestos identification, controlled removal, and lawful disposal, ensuring sites are cleared safely and efficiently.

When carrying out demolition projects, they follow stringent

protocols to minimise risk and contamination, using advanced techniques and protective measures to safeguard workers and clients. Their expertise extends beyond asbestos removal, offering comprehensive site preparation services that set the foundation for safe and successful construction.

Property owners, developers, and contractors must prioritise safety when dealing with asbestos. Working with a certified professional like City Salvage Contractors ensures compliance with WorkSafe

NZ regulations and protects both human health and the environment.

For reliable, safe, and professional asbestos removal and demolition services, trust City Salvage Contractors—your expert partner in making sites asbestos-free and construction-ready.

Don’t take risks with asbestos— engage certified professionals for all asbestos demolition and removal needs. Contact City Salvage Contractors today at citysalvage. co.nz or call them on 03 389 9650 for expert asbestos removal services. CT
