Honouring your heritage
BY JAMIE QUINN
If you’re looking to make your wedding feel extra special and true to who you are, bringing in a few cultural traditions is a beautiful way to celebrate where you come from. By adding a few thoughtful touches here and there, you can create a wedding that feels personal, memorable, and full of meaning. Here are some easy ideas to help you mix culture into your day.
Make the ceremony yours
Your wedding ceremony is a great place to add a touch of culture. Think about including a blessing, reading, or small ritual that reflects your heritage. For example, some couples include a Scottish handfasting (tying hands together with a ribbon) to show their bond. Or, if you have Indian roots, you could adopt the “seven steps” (Saptapadi) ceremony, where each step represents a promise you make together. Simple, meaningful gestures like these can add depth to the day.
Add cultural details to your outfit
You don’t have to go all out with a traditional look, but adding a small nod to your heritage can be a sweet touch. Maybe it’s a patterned sash, some embroidery, or a piece of jewellery that ties into your background. Even small details, like a colour that represents good luck or a pattern from your culture, can make your outfit more personal without taking away from the modern style you want.
Bring culture to the music and dancing
Music is one of the best ways to celebrate culture. If you’re Greek, for instance, you could do a traditional Greek dance to get everyone involved. Latin American? Bring in a bit of salsa or merengue to keep things lively. Mix a few traditional songs into the playlist to keep things fresh and fun—it’s a great way to get everyone on the dance floor and celebrating together.
Serve up a taste of tradition
Everyone loves good food, and bringing in a few dishes from your culture is a great way to share your roots with guests. It doesn’t have to be the whole menu, but a few signature dishes or desserts, like baklava for Middle Eastern heritage or pasta for Italian, can add a nice personal touch. Little food cards with descriptions add a fun way for guests to learn about the dishes and their significance.
Incorporate cultural symbols in your décor
Your décor can be another subtle way to honour your culture. Think about colours, patterns, or symbols that mean something to your heritage. For instance, if you’re Japanese, you could represent your culture with cherry blossoms or paper cranes, whereas Mexican-inspired décor could include bright colours and papel picado (decorative paper banners).
Small details like these are easy to add but bring a lot of personality to the day.
Give guests a small cultural favour
Let your guests take home a little piece of your culture! This could be a bottle of olive oil, a fan, or a small treat that represents your background. Adding a small note explaining the significance can make it extra meaningful and help guests feel even more connected to the celebration.

To wish or to gift?
BY PAIGE O’BRIEN
The wishing well: A modern twist on tradition
The wishing well is a charming metaphor for hopes and dreams that invites guests to contribute funds to the bride and groom rather than gifts.
This option allows guests to offer blessings and well wishes alongside their contributions. It is a wonderfully discreet method for those who would like to help fund the couple for the future –whether that be a down payment on a home, a honeymoon, or other meaningful expenses. The simplicity of this approach often appeals to guests who prefer the ease of giving cash, avoiding the difficulty of choosing a gift.
However, the simplicity of a wishing well can also be its drawback. Some guests might miss the personal touch of selecting a gift that they think perfectly fits the couple’s tastes and needs. There is also the delicate matter of money. Discussing financial contributions can be awkward, and not all guests may feel comfortable with the idea, preferring the traditional gift-giving route, which they feel embodies more thought and effort.
Gifts: The time-honoured custom
Opting for gifts from a registry preserves the timeless tradition of gift-giving. It allows guests to give something tangible, which can often have sentimental value and become cherished keepsakes. A registry assists guests in choosing gifts, ensuring that their purchases are both needed and wanted, eliminating the guesswork and potential for unwanted items. This method is especially useful to those who enjoy the act of giving and spend time selecting something that resonates with the personal tastes of the bride and groom.
On the flip side, managing a gift registry can add another layer of complexity to wedding planning. This is because the couple has to spend time selecting items, setting up the registry, and later managing returns and exchanges for unsuitable gifts. For guests, there is the challenge of purchasing these gifts in time, especially popular items that may go out of stock, and physically bringing them to the wedding venue.
Some may choose to blend both options, offering the flexibility of a wishing well for those who favour simplicity and a registry for guests who prefer giving physical gifts. Ultimately, the decision rests on what best reflects the couple’s desires and outlook, ensuring their day is wrapped in the love of family and friends, each gift a testament to their future and shared joy for what is to come.

REAL WEDDING Mel and Tom
When Mel moved from Christchurch to Auckland looking for a change, she wasn’t expecting to find love so quickly.
“I thought I would wait a while before I started dating to give myself a chance to settle in. After two weeks, I thought, ‘What’s the harm in seeing what’s out there!?’. I signed up, and within a week, Tom and I matched and started talking. Short messages turned into novels, and we both felt a strong connection and shared similar values and goals for the future.”
Their relationship grew and strengthened after supporting each other through a difficult loss, and the couple soon realised what they had was something special.
After having to reschedule a trip around the South Island due to COVID, they headed off for a getaway to Queenstown, where Mel was in for a surprise.

Pro tips 5
1. LET ONE VENDOR LEAD YOU TO ANOTHER
Once you have one vendor you trust, ask them for recommendations! Your photographer, florist, or caterer likely has a network of reliable pros they’ve worked with before. Not only does this give you a vetted list of vendors, but it also helps create a team that already knows how to collaborate, making your day run even smoother.
2. LET YOUR PERSONALITIES INSPIRE YOU
Your wedding should feel like you! Whether you’re adventurous, quirky, or low-key, look for ways to add those unique touches, from themed cocktails to a pizza dinner. This day is about celebrating your love; don’t worry about following all the traditions if they don’t fit who you are as a couple.
Step into a world of elegance and romance with Wedding Professionals, where over two decades of experience in wedding planning and bespoke styling ensure your dream wedding becomes a reality.
3. BE REALISTIC WITH YOUR TIME
Wedding planning takes time, so don’t overload yourself by trying to tackle everything at once! Make a list of priorities and break it down into manageable steps. A few small tasks each week will feel a lot more doable than a last-minute scramble.
4. CLEAN UP YOUR PINTEREST BOARD
Pinterest can be a lifesaver for wedding inspiration, but too many ideas can actually make decision-making harder. Go through your board and keep only the images that truly reflect the look and feel you want. When you have a more focused vision, it’s easier to make choices that bring your dream day to life without feeling overwhelmed by too many options.
With packages to suit all budgets, you can look forward to having your perfect wedding day.
5. INCLUDE VENUE DIRECTIONS WITH INVITATIONS
Make sure your guests know exactly where to go by including venue directions with your invitations or on your wedding website. Even with GPS, venues can often be held in hard-to-find spots, so a simple map or clear directions will save them from any navigation nightmares.

Hit the right note
BY BEN O’CONNELL
Music makes us lose control, but once the music plays, there’s only so much within your control.
And so, the question remains: should a live band or a DJ pick the tracks at your wedding? Choosing between someone behind a drum kit or some decks can greatly impact the atmosphere of your special day, so weighing up the pros and cons is crucial.
A live band offers an authentic, engaging experience. Imagine a bluegrass band going berserk with a banjo to enliven your guests. Live performances can make the evening feel like a private concert. There are some downsides, though: bands usually come at a higher cost, require more space, and need breaks, which may momentarily disrupt the flow of music.
A DJ, on the other hand, brings flexibility. They can accommodate requests from all genres and allow couples to include specific songs that are meaningful to them. DJs typically cost less, need less space, and can play non-stop throughout the event. One risk is that DJs may lack the personalised touch and visual engagement that a live band can bring, making the performance feel a bit more automated.
Several factors are to be considered, including budget, venue size, music preference, guest demographics, and wedding style. Some weddings feature a live band for the ceremony and a DJ for the reception so that guests can enjoy the best of both worlds. Cost is often the deciding factor; bands typically charge more due to the need for multiple musicians.
Regardless, a live band and a DJ will promote themselves through their performance. A band’s repertoire may be more limited. Sometimes, bands may have to play the same popular songs repeatedly, while a DJ can access virtually unlimited tracks, keeping the energy high and guests dancing to familiar favourites.
The cheapest option? Spotify. Hiring speakers and playing your favourite tracks all day and night might be the most affordable and flexible fit. Just remember that guests can get too trigger-happy with the next-song button…
Ultimately, whether you opt for a live band or a DJ should align with your vision of an unforgettable experience. After all, whether it’s the thrill of a live guitar riff or the seamless beats of a DJ, the right music choice will make your wedding truly memorable.

Limoncello Mojito
New love, old love
BY BEN O’CONNELL
Weddings are a time for celebration, joy, and community, but these feelings can be bittersweet when a recently passed loved one is absent. Whether through a subtle tribute or a public acknowledgement, there are many special ways to honour those who cannot be there.
Many couples ask their celebrant to briefly honour loved ones at the start of the ceremony. This can help alleviate emotional weight for you and your guests, allowing space for reflection before the focus shifts to celebration. Your celebrant can help craft the perfect words for this moment. Other ways to honour loved ones during the ceremony include walking down the aisle alone, sharing a meaningful poem or quote, or observing a moment of silence.
Heartfelt absences can also be recognised during the reception. Ideas include a tribute during speeches, a dedicated toast, playing a special song, or serving a loved one’s favourite food or drink.
Another option is to honour loved ones through location and décor. Consider selecting a venue with special significance, incorporating their favourite flowers into your bouquet or arrangements, or lighting a remembrance candle to symbolise their presence.
Another touching option is to save an empty chair for a loved one, marked with a photo, flowers, or personal item. You might also wish to have a memorial table displaying pictures, candles, or keepsakes. Couples might ask guests to donate to a charity in their loved one’s memory or share a message in a memory book to reflect on later.
Wedding attire can carry special meaning, such as attaching a photo in a locket to your bouquet, wearing jewellery or clothing, or incorporating heirlooms like rings, handkerchiefs, or lace. Even wearing a loved one’s perfume or cologne can keep their memory close.
There’s no right or wrong way to honour loved ones at your wedding. Every tribute, big or small, celebrates their lasting impact. If it feels too painful to recognise their absence on the day, that’s okay—do what feels right for you. The love you shared will always be a part of your wedding day.

Ruby and James
REAL WEDDING
The ‘Golden Thread’ theory was in play when Ruby and James found each other. After first matching on Tinder, Ruby coincidentally moved into a flat with some of James’ friends.
Their engagement was a little bit of Christmas magic, “It was Christmas morning 2021; we were up in Golden Bay and decided we would go for a walk along the beach before we spent the day with family. It wasn’t long into our walk, and the next thing I knew, James was down on one knee. I had absolutely no idea that this was when James would pop the question. This is super special to us as it’s the beach that my mum grew up on.”
The couple wed on Friday the 13th, January 2023. “We definitely had some strange looks from our friends and family when we told them the date.”

Pro tips 4
1. KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DIY’ING AND PLAN ACCORDINGLY
DIY wedding projects can be a lot of fun, but it’s important to know your limits. Whether you’re making handmade invitations, floral arrangements, or personalised favours, plan realistically for the time, skills, and resources needed. Start early, enlist help when needed, and don’t overcommit.
2. CHOOSE YOUR BRIDE/GROOM CREW CAREFULLY
Your wedding party plays a significant role in the lead-up to your big day and on the day itself, so choose people who are supportive, reliable, and genuinely excited for you. It’s not about obligation; it’s about surrounding yourself with individuals who will bring positivity and calm to the planning process and celebrations.
3. THINK ABOUT CEREMONY SEATING
Ceremony seating is more important than you might think. Consider the layout, accommodating guests with mobility needs, and creating a warm, inclusive environment. Whether you go for a classic arrangement or unique circular seating, plan it with both aesthetics and practicality in mind to make sure everyone feels comfortable and involved.
4. TAKE YOUR TIME
Planning a wedding is a marathon, not a sprint, so give yourself the time to make thoughtful decisions. Rushing can lead to stress and choices you might regret later. Enjoy the process, tackle tasks at your own pace, and remember—this is about creating a day that reflects your love story, not meeting unrealistic timelines.

Wedding bells or warning bells?
BY JAMIE QUINN
When I was planning my wedding, I struggled to settle on the perfect venue. I realised very quickly that, when it comes to your wedding, the venue is arguably the most important decision you will make (other than your partner, of course!).
It sets the vibe, creates lasting memories, and affects everything from how smoothly things go to the backdrop for photos. But how do you make sure that beautiful venue you’re eyeing up isn’t hiding any nasty surprises? Just like you did when first meeting your partner, you have to keep an eye out for red flags!
Lack of clear communication
Ever sent an email or left a voicemail and waited... and waited? Being patient is a given, within reason. If the venue manager or coordinator is slow to respond, they are most likely busy with other bookings. However, if you have been waiting weeks or even months between communication, consider that a warning sign. Good communication is essential when planning a wedding—you’ll have lots of questions and details to sort out. If they’re not responsive now, imagine how stressful it could be later when you’re discussing crucial things like the floor plan or catering.
Hidden costs
There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a venue only to find out that the initial price doesn’t cover everything. Surprise! Now you’re on the hook for extra fees for things like parking, security, or using their sound equipment. Always ask for a detailed breakdown of costs, including service fees and potential overtime charges. If the contract isn’t clear, it might be time to look elsewhere.
Limited vendor options
Some venues require you to use their approved vendors, which might not be a dealbreaker for everyone, but it can limit your choices and inflate your budget if their vendors are more expensive than your favourites. If a venue insists on specific vendors but doesn’t let you meet or talk with them first, consider that a red flag. Your wedding should reflect your vision, not just the venue’s.
Outdated or unkempt facilities
A venue might look gorgeous in photos or even on a quick walkthrough, but don’t stop there. Check the bathrooms, kitchens, and changing areas—these are easy to overlook but so important for you and your guests. If you spot worn-out fixtures, cleanliness issues, or signs of neglect, it could mean the venue isn’t well-maintained and could impact your day.
Scheduling conflicts
If the venue is juggling multiple events on your big day or seems overbooked, it could lead to chaos. You want to make sure you have enough time for setup, the actual event, and a smooth breakdown without feeling rushed. Ask how much time is allotted for your event and what happens if other events are scheduled on the same day.
Poor weather contingency plans
Dreaming of an outdoor wedding? Great! But make sure there’s a solid backup plan. Some venues might not have an indoor space big enough to accommodate everyone if the weather takes a turn. Don’t just take their word for it—check out the backup space yourself to make sure it meets your expectations.
Negative reviews and reputation
Do some digging. Browse wedding forums, social media, and Google reviews. While one or two negative reviews might not be a big deal, a consistent pattern of similar complaints is definitely a red flag. And don’t forget to ask friends or other wedding pros for their input—they might know something you don’t.
Finding the right wedding venue can feel overwhelming, but trust me, a bit of extra research and paying attention to these potential red flags can save you so much stress. At the end of the day, you want a place that matches your vision and makes you feel confident that your wedding will be as magical as you’ve dreamed. So, take your time, ask lots of questions, and choose a venue where you’ll not just celebrate—but truly enjoy every moment.
