The days are lengthening, and the sun is shining brighter! You know what that means: spring is in the air! Spring is a time for new beginnings, and what better way to embrace this fresh start than by giving your home a thorough cleaning?
Winter can be particularly harsh on our living spaces. The build-up of dirt, dust, and grime can leave our homes feeling stale and uninviting. However, with a little elbow grease and a strategic approach, you can transform your living environment into a clean, healthy, and welcoming space.
Before diving straight into deep cleaning, it’s a good idea to start with decluttering. Start by going through each room and sorting items into three categories: keep, donate and discard. This process can be overwhelming, so break it down into manageable tasks. Begin with areas that are less sentimental, such as closets or garages. These spaces often
accumulate clutter over time and can be easier to declutter without emotional attachments getting in the way.
As you declutter, remember to be ruthless. When deciding whether to keep or discard an item, ask yourself: Do I love it? Do I use it? Does it serve a purpose? If you haven’t used it or even thought about it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go.
Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to tackle the deep cleaning. Start with the kitchen, the heart of the home. Those appliances that work tirelessly all year round deserve a little TLC. Use a gentle cleaner and a soft cloth to avoid scratching surfaces.
Ovens can be a real challenge. Spills and splatters can turn into smoky nightmares if not taken care of quickly. Here’s a handy trick: sprinkle salt over the mess immediately. It works like magic to stop the smoking and makes clean-up a breeze once the oven has cooled down.
Don’t forget to get inside and on top of the cabinets!
The bathroom is another area that often needs a deep cleaning. Extra moisture during winter can encourage mould growth,
which is horrible for our health. Pay attention to grout lines and corners, as these can accumulate mildew and mould.
Living areas can accumulate a lot of dust and dirt. In addition to your usual vacuum, it’s a great idea to shampoo your carpets and rugs to get rid of the last traces of winter. Dust and polish furniture, vacuum curtains, and wipe down blinds. Don’t forget to start opening those windows to let in the fresh spring air!
Kitchen:
• Clean appliances thoroughly, including the stove, oven, refrigerator, and microwave
• Scrub countertops and cabinets (inside and outside)
• Clean the sink and tapware
• Sweep and mop the floor.
Bathroom:
• Scrub the bathtub, shower, and sink
• Clean the toilet, including the base and seat
• Disinfect the toothbrush holder and other bathroom accessories
• Clean the mirrors and vanity
• Sweep and mop the floor.
Bedrooms:
• Wash bedding in hot water
• Vacuum the mattress and pillows
• Dust furniture and baseboards
• Clean the windows and blinds and/or wash curtains
• Sweep and mop the floor.
Living areas:
• Vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly
• Dust furniture, blinds and/ or wash curtains
• Clean windows and mirrors
• Dust baseboards and ceiling fans
• Sweep and mop the floor.

If you are a landlord, they can help you meet your rental property “Healthy Home” requirements, such as installing heatpumps, heaters, ventilation for bathrooms etc.
Break it down:
Don’t try to do everything at once. Break down the cleaning tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks.
Start with the most challenging areas: This will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to continue.
Make it fun:
Put on some music or a podcast to make the cleaning process more enjoyable.
Get help:
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask for help from friends, family, or a professional cleaning service.
Use natural cleaners: Many household cleaning products contain harmful
chemicals. Consider using natural alternatives, such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.
Don’t forget the outdoors: Spring is also a great time to clean up your outdoor spaces. Rake leaves, trim shrubs, and wash patio furniture.
Let’s move on to the bedroom. Our bedding endures a lot of wear and tear throughout the year, so it’s crucial to refresh it regularly. Depending on the fabric type, you can revitalise your comforters, pillowcases, and sheets with a hot wash using baking soda, white vinegar, and laundry detergent. Mattresses and pillows can also benefit from a deep cleaning. Sprinkle baking soda on them, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum it up to remove odours.
For stubborn stains or lingering smells, consider using a steam cleaner. Just be sure to let everything dry completely before making the bed.
Don’t neglect your general home maintenance tasks. These can include inspecting gutters, changing heat pump filters, and cleaning out the fireplace. If you take care of these annoying chores now, you can prevent bigger (and expensive) issues in the future.
New Zealand’s property market is always a hot topic, sometimes moving at an extraordinary pace, providing homeowners looking to sell with record-setting returns on their investment.
With the median house price continually on the rise, homeowners are looking for the best way to optimise the selling of their homes.
A renovation before selling your house maybe your best option in optimising selling your house.
Recladding your home before selling
In New Zealand, one of the most impactful renovations you can undertake is recladding.
This is particularly crucial in light of the lasting effects of the “leaky home” crisis, which has significantly influenced buyer perceptions and the lending practices of financial institutions.
The stigma surrounding older plaster cladding, even if there’s no evidence of it being leaky, can deter potential buyers and reduce the property’s market value.
Recladding not only addresses these concerns but also modernizes the home’s exterior. The initial impression created by the cladding significantly influences curb appeal, which studies suggest can affect the selling price by up to 15 percent.
By opting for modern cladding, you not only mitigate perceived risks but also potentially increase the property’s market value, thereby justifying the investment in recladding.
Considering the layout of your home
Another effective strategy to increase a home’s value
before selling is to evaluate and potentially renovate its layout. Many older homes lack the modern conveniences and open-plan designs that appeal to contemporary buyers.
Simple modifications like creating open-plan living spaces or repositioning entertainment areas can enhance the perceived size and functionality of the home, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
Alternatively, expanding the home by adding rooms or extending existing spaces can significantly increase its market appeal and value. Additional bedrooms, for example, are highly valued by buyers and can elevate a property into a higher price bracket.
Should I remodel my kitchen before selling? what about bathrooms?
Kitchens and bathrooms, in particular, are areas where investing in upgrades can yield substantial returns.
Potential buyers are more likely to appreciate and be willing to pay more for a home that requires minimal immediate renovation, saving them time and effort post-purchase.
A well-designed kitchen, for instance, can serve as a centerpiece of the home, attracting buyers who value aesthetics and functionality in their living spaces. Similarly, renovated bathrooms or a thoughtfully designed entertainment area can enhance the overall appeal and perceived value of the property.
While these renovations may incur upfront costs, they often translate into higher offers and a quicker sale. Potential buyers are more likely to appreciate and be willing to pay more for a home that requires minimal immediate renovation, saving them time and effort post-purchase.
Time, convenience, and financial considerations
There’s a misconception that buyers prefer to renovate homes themselves rather than pay a premium for pre-renovated properties. However, many buyers are financially stretched upon purchasing a home and may lack the resources
or experience to undertake extensive renovations.
A well-renovated property, therefore, appeals to buyers looking for move-in ready homes and can justify a higher asking price.
Renovating a home can be time-consuming and daunting, adding another layer of appeal to properties that require minimal additional work.
Does renovating increase home value?
In conclusion, renovating a home before selling can significantly enhance its market value by addressing potential drawbacks and enhancing its appeal to prospective buyers.
The key lies in choosing renovations that not only recoup their costs but also exceed them in the eyes of potential buyers, thereby justifying the investment in enhancing the property’s marketability and appeal.

Becoming proficient in plastering and tiling can significantly enhance your DIY skills for various building and renovation projects.
These tasks are crucial for achieving a professional finish, and although they may seem daunting initially, enthusiasts can successfully master them with proper guidance and practice.
Plastering involves applying a smooth, durable finish to walls and ceilings, creating a solid foundation for further decoration.
It starts with thorough surface preparation—ensuring cleanliness, dryness, and removal of any loose debris. Any cracks or holes should be filled and smoothed to ensure a seamless surface for plaster application. After priming the surface, mixing the plaster to the correct consistency as per manufacturer’s instructions is essential for optimal results.
Even and smooth application is key, starting from the top and progressing downward in thin coats. Feathering the edges helps blend the plaster seamlessly with the surrounding area.
While the plaster is setting but still workable, using a damp sponge or float can refine the texture and address any imperfections. Paying attention to these finishing touches distinguishes amateur efforts from professional-quality results.
Tiling requires meticulous planning to achieve a visually appealing outcome. Properly preparing the surface is crucial, ensuring it is clean, level, and adequately waterproofed if necessary.
Thoughtfully planning the tile layout minimises awkward cuts and ensures symmetry for a pleasing aesthetic.

sections to prevent the adhesive from drying prematurely.
Dry-fitting tiles beforehand allows for adjustments and helps visualise the final appearance.
With patience, attention to detail, and a commitment to learning, mastering plastering and tiling as a DIY enthusiast can be a rewarding journey, yielding impressive results in your building and renovation projects.
As insurance advisers, Cartwrights work for you, not the insurer. We take the time to understand your business and the risks you face.
For many Kiwi tradies, their business is their livelihood. If an accident or unforeseeable incident causes damage to third party property or injury to someone (other than your employees), you may be found legally liable to cover the costs. No matter how stringent your company is, mistakes can happen. Businesses can face allegations or legal action even if they are not actually responsible for the loss. Dealing with these issues can be very difficult and expensive, taking focus away from the business. Having the appropriate public liability insurance in place can help to protect your business from the financial risk of liability claims – giving you the certainty you need to trade with confidence.
While public and product liability insurance isn’t mandatory for most businesses, it is recommended for all companies in New Zealand. That’s because the unpredictable nature of accidents makes them hard to prevent – and the costs of being held liable can be extraordinarily high. Most general liability policies also include cover for defence costs, which can be used for legal fees to defend the business against unjustified claims.
Save time, save money and stress less. We will help find you the right insurance products at the right price, so you can get on with doing what really matters. Your business is

Revitalise your space with Dulux’s inspiring 2025 colour forecast
By Jamie Quinn
Dulux has unveiled its Colour Forecast for 2025, and it’s all about finding joy and comfort in the spaces we call home. After years of uncertainty and change, many of us are looking to our surroundings for a sense of stability and peace. Dulux’s new palettes are here to help us do just that, with colours that feel like a warm hug at the end of a long day.
The 2025 Colour Forecast is divided into three inviting palettes: Still, Recollect, and Emerge. Each one has its own personality, but they all share a common goal—to make our homes feel more like the comforting retreat we crave. The warmth of brown undertones runs throughout, adding a touch of nurturing positivity to our living spaces. Imagine rich burgundies and wine hues that wrap a room in elegance, or the calming presence of greens like olive and sage that connect us to nature. Even the more vibrant yellowgreen shades bring a playful energy that lifts our spirits.
Behind this thoughtful collection is the Dulux Colour Team, including colour specialist Davina Harper, colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr, and colour forecaster and stylist Bree Leech. Their work isn’t just about picking colours that look nice—they dive deep into what these colours mean
Whether you’re looking to refresh a single room or do a complete home makeover, these colours can inspire confidence and creativity. They remind us that our homes are personal spaces— places where we can express who we are and what makes us happy.
for us. They attend events like Milan Design Week, talk to global brands, and tap into insights from Europe and the Asia Pacific to bring us shades that resonate with our lives right now.
In times like these, when the world feels a bit shaky, we naturally gravitate towards colours that make us feel grounded. That’s why we’re seeing a rise in warm neutrals and soft greys. These muted tones offer a gentle escape from the hustle and bustle, giving us a sense of calm when everything else seems a little too much. But it’s not all about playing it safe— there’s room for fun too. Brighter colours are making a comeback, adding joy to our interiors. Think of pinks with a hint of brown that makes them cosy and versatile or the unexpected pop of lilac and purple that adds a bit of whimsy without feeling too loud. Even blue is getting a fresh twist, with purple undertones bringing a new level of depth and sophistication.
These palettes are designed to work together effortlessly, giving us the freedom to mix and match. Whether you’re looking to refresh a single room or do a complete home makeover, these
colours can inspire confidence and creativity. They remind us that our homes are personal spaces—places where we can express who we are and what makes us happy.
Dulux ambassador Evie Kemp captures the essence of these trends beautifully. “The trends for Spring 24/Summer 25 are optimistic, joyful, and comforting,” she says. “We’re seeing sunny colours used in playful ways, lots of curves, soft shapes, and textures.” Kemp describes how these trends might feel youthful, but the Dulux Emerge palette takes them to a more sophisticated level. It’s all about sustainability and nods to classic design eras, showing us that we can have fun with colour while still keeping things timeless and elegant.
“The reason we come back to colours like these in times of renewal is for how they make us feel,” Kemp continues. “They’re almost infectious in
their positivity without being saccharine.” Her favourite shades from the Emerge palette—like the dusky mauve of Dulux Mechanics Bay or the vibrant yellow of Dulux Hagley Park— show how colour can create a space that’s both serene and surprising. These colours make a room feel alive, full of personality, and perfectly imperfect.
For anyone feeling a bit hesitant about diving into new colours, Kemp offers some reassuring advice. “The Colour Forecast is such a great way to get inspiration and stretch your colour boundaries with combinations you might not have originally thought of,” she says. “Think about how they make you feel and how you might be able to bring them into your own home.” A simple starting point might be painting a piece of furniture in one of the forecast’s accent colours. “It usually leads to a whole room redesign—I’m not mad about it,” Kemp says.

Incorporating sculptures into home decor is a charming way to elevate the aesthetic of any living space. Sculptures, unlike other art forms, offer a threedimensional allure that can transform bland areas into focal points of artistic expression and conversation.
The aesthetic appeal of sculptures
Sculptures add a tactile element to home decor that paintings and photographs can’t really match. Whether made from marble, bronze, wood, or modern materials like resin and metal, sculptures provide a depth of texture and form that enhances the sensory experience of a room. A well-placed sculpture can serve as the centrepiece of a
living room, create a welcoming ambience in entryways, or add serenity in a quiet nook.
The world of sculptures is incredibly diverse, catering to all tastes and interior schemes. For traditional decor, classical sculptures that draw inspiration from Roman or Greek antiquities can add a touch of timeless elegance. These pieces often
feature human figures or mythological themes and are usually crafted in materials like marble or bronze.
Contemporary sculptures, on the other hand, are perfect for modern homes and can vary from abstract forms to minimalist designs. Made from a range of materials, including glass, steel, and even recycled objects, these sculptures often focus on form and space, playing
with light and shadow to create an impact or even sometimes demonstrate an illusion.
For those with a more eclectic or bohemian style, artisanal sculptures made from wood, clay, or mixed media can introduce an earthy, organic feel to the home. These pieces are often handcrafted and have a unique story, adding not only visual interest but also a personal touch to your living space.
Integration tips
1. Scale and proportion
Consider the scale of the sculpture in relation to the room. A large sculpture in a small room can be overwhelming, while a smaller piece might get lost in a spacious area. It is important to balance the sculpture with the furniture and other decor elements to create harmony.
2. Placement
Sculptures should be placed where they can be admired from various angles. Consider high-traffic areas or places where guests are likely to pause. If the sculpture is particularly detailed, positioning it at eye level or in a well-lit area can enhance its visibility and impact.
3. Theme consistency
While it is exciting to play with contrasting styles, maintaining a connected theme helps in achieving a harmonious interior. For instance, modern homes might benefit from abstract or
At Graham Surveying we do more than simply measure and model the world. As one of the South Island’s largest surveying practices we provide a wide range of land survey services for residential and commercial design and construction projects. We pride ourselves on being flexible and responsive to client and project needs with a focus on delivering high quality data while developing long lasting and enjoyable relationships with our clients and project team members.
Every design process starts with a high quality topographical survey that we capture through our modern survey fleet of total stations, GNSS, UAV (drone) and laser scanners. Our software packages enable delivery of 3D data, including aerial photography, in a range of formats depending on design requirements. Our capabilities include the creation of 3D models from point clouds to assist with the building of BIM models.
Our in house resource management planners are skilled and knowledgeable across the South Island’s Regional and Territorial Authorities when it comes to obtaining land use or subdivision consents for residential, commercial and rural developments.
During construction our survey team can assist with survey setout and asbuilts on any project ranging from new residential dwellings, townhouses and retirement villages through to schools, large format supermarkets and even stadiums!
And as the construction of your project nears completion our licensed cadastral surveyors will work with you and your solicitor to complete any subdivision requirements to enable the creation of new titles for your purchasers.
minimalist sculptures, whereas a house with rustic charm could be enhanced with natural materials like wood or stone.
4. Interaction with light
Lighting can dramatically enhance the appearance of a sculpture. Natural light can beautifully play off the contours of a sculpture, while spotlighting can amplify its drama in a room. Consider placing sculptures near windows or under light fixtures to maximise this effect.
Sculptures are more than just decorative items; they are expressions of art that bring life and character to a home. By selecting the right piece, considering its placement and ensuring it complements your home’s decor, a sculpture can become a beloved centrepiece of your living environment. Whether you opt for classic elegance, modern boldness, or artisanal charm, a well-chosen sculpture will enrich your home and inspire your daily living.

Accents of seafoam green, sunny yellow, and coral can add a vibrant yet soothing touch, evoking the liveliness of coastal flora and fauna.
Natural materials:
Embrace rustic elegance
The use of natural materials is essential in creating an authentic coastal vibe. Opt for furniture and decor in light woods, rattan, wicker, and distressed driftwood. Flooring should be unassuming yet elegant; consider bleached wood floors or a light stone tile that stays cool underfoot.

Linen, cotton, and other natural fabrics for drapes and upholstery help maintain an organic, cohesive look.
Fabrics and textiles:
Breezy and comfortable
Fabrics play a key role in achieving a breezy coastal feel. Choose breathable materials like cotton and linen for everything from sofa covers to bed linens. Sheer curtains that sway with the sea breeze, paired with heavier drapes for privacy, can frame windows beautifully. Incorporate striped patterns, particularly in blue and white, to add a nautical touch without overwhelming the space.
Maximsing natural light:
Sunlit and spacious
To truly embody the coastal vibe, maximise the influx of natural light. Install large windows, french doors, or sliding panels that not only flood the space with sunlight but also provide expansive views of the outdoors. Use minimal window treatments to keep the interiors bright and cheerful. Reflective surfaces such
as mirrors or glossy white tiles can amplify light, enhancing the airy feel of the rooms.
Sea-inspired decor:
Artwork and accessories
Spruce up your walls with artwork that celebrates the oceanic environment –watercolour seascapes, framed coastal maps, or canvas prints of the beach can serve as focal points. Accessorise with maritime elements like ropes, anchors, and ship wheels subtly. Display collections of shells, beach glass, or sand in clear glass containers to add a personal touch that speaks to seaside adventures.
Indoor-outdoor living:
Blurring the lines
In coastal homes, the boundary between indoors and outdoors often blurs. Design patios, decks, or porches as extensions of the indoor living space. Use outdoor rugs, weather-resistant furniture, and plenty of throw pillows to create inviting areas perfect for relaxation or social gatherings. Consider an outdoor fireplace
or a firepit for cooler evenings, enhancing the year-round usability of outdoor spaces.
Textural elements: Depth and interest
Incorporating various textures is crucial for adding depth and interest to a coastal home.
Basket-weave details, knotted throws, and braided rugs add tactile diversity and a handmade charm. Wall hangings in macramé or woven fabrics can introduce artful craftsmanship that complements the theme.
Designing a coastal-themed home is about more than just aesthetics; it is about creating a lifestyle that is relaxed, comfortable, and in harmony with the natural environment. By integrating these detailed design elements, you can achieve a home that not only looks coastal but feels like a genuine retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Let these ideas inspire you to transform your space into a soothing, ocean-inspired haven where every day feels like a peaceful escape to the shore.
This stunning interior, called A Diaphanous Design, is a comprehensive refurbishment of an apartment in central Auckland.
A crucial part of the project brief was to have as few walls as possible and that any vertical surfaces needed to accommodate either cabinetry or artwork.
The project brief was to create a soft, filtered and textured inner-city home while also enhancing the industrial nature of the former warehouse building - built in the 1920s. This was done by stripping back the existing apartment, exposing the underlying structure and then carefully curating the space while incorporating a combination of bespoke and modular cabinetry units.
The design was an opportunity to explore ideas of transparency, privacy, texture and modularity.
A crucial part of the project brief was to have as few walls as possible and that any vertical surfaces needed to accommodate either cabinetry or artwork.
The clients’ artwork and furniture were catalogued, CAD-modelled and incorporated into the project from the outset.
Colour was selected within this project to complement the client’s eclectic artwork and the original exposed building materials as well as a means of enhancing the spatial volumes and natural light as the spaces were opened up.
Dulux products used:
Dulux Protective Coatings System - internal steel joinery.
Dulux colours used:
Dulux Mt Aspiring
Dulux Green Olive
Dulux Honey Mustard
Dulux Matt Black (as part of the protective coating system to internal steel joinery).
We strived to create a warm, welcoming and vibrant inner-city home for our clients who split their time between Auckland and the Coromandel.
A key design driver for this project is the considered and delicate use of industrial componentry.
Steel beams, joinery, cabinetry and exposed conduit have all been thoughtfully integrated into the space and yet (as the name suggests), there is a lightness in both the ambience and the adaptability of the apartment that belies the heaviness of the components.
The project was a finalist in the 38th annual Dulux Colour Awards’ Residential Interior category.

With a few carefully chosen and crafted structures, you can increase your garden’s function, aesthetic, and value. Add a personal touch to your garden space with these do-ityourself structures that won’t break the bank.
Garden archway
With some wooden stakes, standard steel mesh, and cable ties, you can fashion a garden archway that will stand the test of time. Before starting, consider how much space you need for walking through and for plants to grow over and if you want a freestanding arch or one anchored into the ground.
Once you have your tree stakes placed into either the ground or the corners of garden beds, say, bend the mesh into an arch shape and secure it with the cable ties, adding instant dimension to your outdoor area.
Hooped cages
Gardeners work hard to grow fruit and vegetables, yet pests and diseases often eat them up before we get the chance. Physical barriers are a simple way to keep these nuisances at bay. Keep tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and the like corralled by hoop-training them; simply three stakes connected by
hoops. Angling the rails ensures there is room for air to circulate and the plants to grow. Remember to regularly check that the structure remains secure and intact. Adjust the hoops as the plants grow taller to ensure continued support. Finally, remove any pests or debris caught in the netting. Garden beds improve drainage, reduce your back strain when gardening, and create a dedicated area for plants to grow. Constructing beds is relatively simple, too, as you’re ultimately making a box.
With some timbers, screws, a handy saw and drill, and some sandpaper, you have all you need to put together a ladder to shelf an array of plants. Cut and measure your frame timber to size, planning carefully.
Brackets and screws will secure the shelves into place before you apply the finish of your choice; sandpaper, paint, or another finish. Then add your precious potted wonders.
An A-frame vertical frame is the textbook support for climbers. Timber, wire, brackets, and screws–the staple items of this list–come together here to offer a spacemaximising garden solution.
Once you’ve made your frame with timber lengths, attach the mesh and push the entire structure into the ground. Consider staking the garden and covering it with mesh for an even simpler solution.
Plants in a vertical garden receive more even sunlight exposure. In traditional garden beds, plants can shade each other, but a vertical frame ensures that each plant has better access to light, which encourages growth and productivity.
Garden beds improve drainage, reduce your back strain when gardening, and create a dedicated area for plants to grow. Constructing beds is relatively simple, too, as you’re ultimately making a box.
Line the bottom of your raised bed with landscape fabric to prevent weeds further. Less soil erosion, better water retention than sandier soils, and more space; there are so many reasons to get out there and DIY garden beds, as well as the other structures listed here. Grow get ‘em!

plants, gardeners not only enhance the beauty and sustainability of their gardens but also positively protect biodiversity and local wildlife.
Michael Tither, CEO and founder of The Plant Store, the nation’s go-to online plant retailer, names the nine native plants Kiwis should consider incorporating in their urban gardens.
No matter which plants gardeners opt for, Michael says the main thing is to ensure they are site-suitable and work with the style of your existing plants.
Sophora ‘Dragon’s Gold’
This miniature Kowhai is highly valued for its attractive, bright yellow flowers that attract nectarfeeding birds. Hardy and lowmaintenance, the ‘Dragon’s Gold’ is common in landscaping due to its compact size. Michael says, “It makes the most incredible shrub.”
Chionochloa flavicans
The miniature toi toi stays small and “has the most adorable seed
Pseudowintera ‘Red Leopard’
A cultivar of the pepper tree, the ‘Red Leopard’ stays compact,” Michael says. As a low-maintenance plant with really interesting foliage, he says it’s perfect for adding interest to an urban garden.
Libertia peregrinans
The New Zealand iris is known for its striking appearance, hardiness, and form. Michael says it’s great for narrow gardens for these reasons. “It’s really great when used against concrete or steel to soften the area when faced with a narrow strip of garden.”
heads come summer.” Michael says gardeners must ensure it has part shade, as too often people put it in full sun, which miniature toi toi don’t like.
Myosotidium hortensia
The Chatham Island forget-menot is “a very popular plant that is perfect for the shady areas in a garden, with amazing luscious foliage and iconic blue flowers.”
Phormium ‘Emerald Gem’
“This cultivar is perfect for the home gardener who wants iconic New Zealand flax in their garden without worrying that it will outgrow its spot,” Michael says.
Pittosporum
‘Frankie’s Folly’ Michael says the ‘Frankie’s Folly is a “superb cultivar of the miniature pittosporums.” He adds that the shrub’s ball shape can be achieved with minimal upkeep and stays fresh all year round.
“It’s not fussy and grows in a lot of different locations.”
Muehlenbeckia axillaris
A low-growing, spreading ground cover, the Muehlenbeckia axillaris, commonly known as wire vine or creeping pohuehue, is widely appreciated for its versatility and resilience. It “adds another layer to the garden, and once established, makes the garden low-maintenance with no area for weeds to appear.” Michael adds that it’s great for trailing over pots too.
With close to 5,000 varieties in stock, The Plant Store can help
Hebe ‘Wiri Mist’
Michael says the ‘Wiri Mist’ is a great choice, popular for good reason. This Hebe holds good form, is easy to maintain, and has beautiful white flowers. It typically blooms from late spring to early summer, but with the right conditions, it may continue flowering sporadically into autumn.

In the first week of September, the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) announced their Excellence in Design Awards recipients for 2024.
This year, the best kitchen in the country, which was awarded the Supreme Award, is a modern family kitchen located in Hillsborough, Auckland, designed for intergenerational living.
Titled ‘Oceanside Residence’, designer Leonie Hamill from Cube Dentro was celebrated for designing the kitchen on strong values.
Leonie says, “Family values, centred around traditional Indian culture and cuisine, were key to the design. Daily meals are prepared by Mum and Grandma, and it was therefore important for the layout to reflect how the pair like to work.”
The judges for this year’s NKBA Excellence in Design Awards, who include leading local and international kitchen designers as well as fashion designer Karen Walker, say the kitchen was phenomenal and a standout this year.
Leonie wasn’t the only major award winner from the Takaninibased design firm, with Alina Cuchiliuc, also from Cube Dentro, winning the 2024 Designer of the Year Award.
Being a recent New Zealand Diploma in Design graduate, the judges were extremely impressed with Alina’s high calibre of design execution, from the aesthetics to the quality of plans.
Alina also walked away with a Kitchen Distinction Award $120K+, Residential Spatial Innovation Design Award, and the DNKBA Bronze Kitchen Award.
Another major award of the night is the 2024 Supreme Bathroom Design Award. This was awarded to Christchurch designer Georgia Langridge from Modi Design.
Her project, titled ‘Parisian Stay’ is a lovely space, that walks the delicate line between masculine and feminine,” says one of the judges.
Georgia also won the DNKBA Silver Kitchen Design Award, DNKBA Silver Bathroom Design Award and the Canterbury Kitchen Design Recognition for three of her other designs. With the rising cost of materials and trades, many designers are working hard to create clever and affordable solutions. For this reason, the Kitchen Distinction Award – up to $30K category, is one of much public interest.
Winning designer Karen Harlen from Bays Joinery in Nelson designed the kitchen with a brief
from the client for a dramatic space utilising black on black.
The NKBA Excellence in Design Awards judges said Karen had carefully selected materials that would work well on a budget and she had created a kitchen that feels generous, clean and functional.
“Sophisticated and sombre hues have been cleverly combined with warm timer accents to create a dark and moody kitchen. This is an intelligent design.”
Karen Harlen wasn’t the only Bays Joinery designer to win an award, with the studio receiving one of the biggest award hauls ever for the Nelson design team.
The design and joinery business, owned by George Molnar, was established in 1992 and has grown from a team of three to
a team of 50. George says much of his business success comes from a dual focus on growing both the manufacturing side of the business and the design and sales team that fuels it.
“This balanced approach has been instrumental in our sustained success. I’ve always placed a strong emphasis on training the next generation of joiners and designers.”
Rachael Kwok, Executive Office of the NKBA, says the 2024 EiD Awards were full of fresh faces.
“NKBA is committed to supporting emerging designers, so it was encouraging to see new designers step into the awards arena in 2024. It’s clear that the future of New Zealand’s kitchen and bathroom design industry is in safe hands.”
Some say enjoying the job and being proud of the finished product creates perfection. At least that’s how Benchtop Concepts operates.
“We don’t run a production line; our staff manufacture the tops from start to finish and sometimes install them as well. The staff really take ownership and pride in their work,” says owner Andrew Crossland.
The company’s ethos is ‘craftsmanship meets technology’, in practise this is digital templating coupled with CNC cutting and machining, producing perfectly dimensioned tops, to which staff add beautiful finishing.
Central to flawless kitchen and bathroom benchtops, is meticulous design, precision fabrication and seamless installation.
“We guide our customers through the process from material selection, quotation, manufacture and installation.”
The company’s use of the latest in manufacturing technology also enables maximising the yield of materials and efficient installation, ensuring affordability of the end product.

The company utilises the best global and national branded products available such as Silestone, Caesarstone, Dekton, Corian and others. Choices include natural stone, engineered stone, porcelain, acrylic, and high-pressure laminate.

Spring is in the air, which means it’s time to shed those winter layers and embrace the sunshine. Are you ready to dust off your outdoor furniture and breathe new life into your backyard or patio?
Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a cosy balcony, creating a welcoming and inviting environment can be extremely rewarding.
First and foremost, a thorough cleaning is essential to set the stage for a fresh start. Imagine the satisfaction of relaxing on freshly cleaned patio furniture, surrounded by sparkling surfaces.
Start by mixing up a simple solution of hot water, vinegar, and a squeeze of lemon. This natural concoction is a powerful cleaner that will cut through dirt and grime without harsh
chemicals. Give your surfaces a good scrub, from your patio table to the railings on your deck.
Don’t forget about your textiles! Wash any linens or pillows to freshen them up and remove any lingering dust mites.
Before making any major changes, envision how you want to utilise your outdoor space. Consider your lifestyle and the activities you enjoy. Do you want a place for quiet relaxation, entertaining guests, or a combination of both? Once you have a clear idea of your goals, you can start creating functional zones.
Consider these common areas:
Dining area: A designated space for enjoying meals outdoors. This might include an outdoor dining table, comfortable chairs, and perhaps a BBQ or outdoor kitchen.
Lounge area: A cosy nook for relaxation and socialising. Incorporate comfortable seating, such as sofas, armchairs, or hammocks, to create an inviting ambience.
Entertainment area: If you frequently host friends and family, you might want to carve out a space dedicated to games, music, or other activities. A fire pit or outdoor bar can be great entertainment areas.
Gardening area: For those with a green thumb, landscape elements like flowers, bushes, and trees can add visual interest. For smaller spaces, potted plants or hanging baskets are excellent options. Why not try your hand at a summer vege garden?
Outdoor living should be comfortable and functional. Durable outdoor furniture is essential for creating a welcoming space. Look for materials like weather-resistant wicker, aluminium, and weather-

treated fabrics. Opt for lowmaintenance plants, easy-toclean furniture, and durable materials to minimise upkeep. The last thing you want is to waste your time on constant upkeep when you could be enjoying your space.
Choose accessories that complement your existing décor to keep costs down. Layer pillows, outdoor rugs, and throws to add pops of colour. Borrow from your indoor decor, but be mindful of materials that can withstand the elements.

The dream of an architecturally designed home in which a harmonious balance of form and function is achieved is now easier and more affordable than ever.
But what makes a home beautiful and really liveable?
Peter Mannion of Synergy Designs has designed award winning homes all over the world and is known for his residential design experience and exceptional style.
Commenting on the importance of design, Peter says, “Great designs must be sensitive to the local area and environment, with a strong focus on balanced proportions and smart, functional elements, to create exciting homes that really work and are very liveable.”
What contributes to a home being liveable?
Peter shares his top tips:
1. Your home should be a joy and fun to live in.
2. The house should be well sited on your section to maximise its position in relation to the sun.
3. Every member of the household should be catered for, meaning parents retreat for privacy, play areas for kids or a place to do homework.
4 If you are a sociable household, visitors and guests need to feel welcome and comfortable, whether they are staying for a few hours or a week.
5. Enhanced interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces.

In the stunning Southern regions, every building tells a story. Here, construction isn’t just about building structures; it’s about creating works of art that reflect and respect the natural beauty surrounding them. For those who are involved in designing, planning, and constructing these buildings, it becomes more than a job—it’s a pursuit of excellence that blends form with function in the most seamless ways possible.
The unique challenges of these regions demand a robust approach to building. We need structures that not only stand the test of time but also look like they belong amidst these scenic wonders.
In navigating the complexities of building in such a protected area, project managers and developers become crucial.
The choice of materials speaks volumes about our commitment to this land. Using local stone and wood and opting for sustainable resources is good practice and a tribute to the environment. It’s about choosing colours and textures that blend rather than clash, and about making sure that every structure enhances rather than disrupts the views that draw people here from all over the world.
And let’s not forget the lessons learned from past earthquakes, which have reshaped our approach to building standards and safety regulations. Today, the expertise in seismic technology and retrofitting is remarkable. Service providers specialising in these areas are not just
contractors; they are lifelines ensuring that our homes and workplaces can withstand nature’s tests. It’s crucial to collaborate with partners who bring both skill and sensitivity to their work, enhancing safety without losing sight of design.
In navigating the complexities of building in such a protected area, project managers and developers become crucial. They’re the glue holding everything together, ensuring that projects meet our high standards of design and safety while also respecting the ecological balance. It’s about managing resources, timelines, and a diverse team of experts, all dedicated to making sure that the built environment works in harmony with the natural one.
Building here is both a technical challenge and a creative endeavour that requires a deep connection to the land and its people.
For property owners and builders, the choice of materials and building practices is increasingly under scrutiny. With sustainability no longer just a buzzword but a mandate, it’s vital to adopt green building practices. This includes everything from energy efficiency to reducing construction waste and choosing non-toxic materials.
Of course, there are the tradespeople. Their expertise in modern construction techniques is indispensable. In a region like this, where every detail
counts, their work ultimately helps a building blend into its picturesque setting.
In Otago, Queenstown, and The Lakes District, every construction project is an opportunity to innovate, to safeguard, and to respect. It’s about bringing together the best in the field to create buildings that do more than function—they inspire. They resonate with the beauty of the landscape and the spirit of the community.
Building here is both a technical challenge and a creative endeavour that requires a deep connection to the land and its people. Choosing the right partners and providers ensures that every new building is not just built but truly born out of the ethos of one of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring regions.
Expanding beyond individual projects, the overall impact of conscientious building practices in these regions cannot be
understated. It’s about setting a precedent that ensures future developments continue to prioritise ecological harmony and architectural beauty. The focus is not just on creating safe and sturdy spaces but also on creating a sense of community and belonging among residents and visitors alike.
Engagement with local communities has shown that there is a shared desire to maintain the pristine nature of these areas while accommodating growth and modernisation. This has led to public forums and collaborations that allow local voices to be heard in the planning stages, ensuring that developments are not only accepted but welcomed by those who call these regions home.
In this process, technology plays a pivotal role. Advances in architectural software and construction techniques allow us to visualise and simulate designs in ways that were not possible before. This technology

enables us to take into account various factors, such as sunlight patterns, wind currents, and even the visual impact of proposed structures from different viewpoints. Such detailed planning helps in creating buildings that are optimised for both energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
The end result of such meticulous planning and collaborative effort is a portfolio of structures that stand as testimonials of what can be achieved when we build with respect for both nature and the community. These buildings
do more than function; they also enhance the local landscape, contribute to the community’s well-being, and stand as monuments to thoughtful and sustainable architecture.
Professionals dedicated to this industry have one clear mission: to continue pushing boundaries, embracing innovation, and ensuring that each new structure showcases both design excellence and environmental sensitivity. In doing so, we not only preserve the beauty of our surroundings but also enrich the lives of those who inhabit them.
