Transcend your home into a bohemian inspired space with these DIY projects.

Elements of ‘boho’ decor will take you to a place of calmness, sanity and peacefulness inside your home.

Bohemian style originated in France in the 19th Century. It’s closely associated with artists, painters, writers and performers. These creatives were perceived as living ‘alternative’ lives to those with more traditional occupations during this time.

Most elements of the decor style are handmade, with original creators opting to use elements, which were cheap or found in nature for their crafts.

Once the boho style became popularised, people began to notice the natural warmth ambience these earthy creations bring to the home.

Natural textures and colours are at the heart of bohemianism. Browns, greens and rusty pinks create the boho colour palette. Using these tones are a great way to elevate this style. Textures such as seagrass, wicker, bamboo, rattan or macrame are also part of the boho aesthetic.

You can easily DIY boho decor with a little bit of creativity and resourcefulness. Here are two ideas to get you started.

DIY macrame wall hanging

Macrame wall hangings could be considered the most familiar association to boho decor style. There are many options to explore with endless different macrame patterns available online.

You’ll need:

• Macrame twine

• Dowel or driftwood.

Once you have found a pattern online of the desired macrame you would like to make, ensure you spend the time watching free tutorials on different knot types required for your design.

There is no such thing as a mistake when it comes to macrame. Any imperfections elevate the handmade feeling of this craft. There’s no right or wrong way to create these stunning pieces.

DIY Raffia Sunburst Mirror

To create your own version of this raffia mirror (see image one), you’ll need to stop by your local craft or homeware shop.

You’ll need:

• Raffia rope

• Circle mirror

• Craft ring (with a similar diameter as your mirror)

• Super glue

• Scissors

• Hook to attach to the wall. Start by cutting your raffia into multiple pieces at equal length. Make sure when you fold one of these pieces in half, it’s the desired length you want the raffia to appear around the perimeter of your mirror.

Fold a strand of raffia in half and tie this using a knot onto the craft ring. Repeat this multiple times until the entire craft ring has been covered and layered with raffia.

One you’ve created a raffia ring, attach the circle mirror onto the top of the craft ring using super glue.

Attach a hook to the back of your creation and your mirror should look something like the image below.

Warmer earthy tones making their way into homes

After a chaotic couple of years, many of us feel an overwhelming desire to live more simply and authentically.

There has been a conscious stripping away of the unnecessary and superfluous, both in terms of what we surround ourselves with and how we spend our time, to create space for more meaningful connections.

In response, the Dulux Colour Forecast 2023 reflects our desire to bond with the environment, or communities and the people we love, with warming, earth-drawn

neutrals, natural textures, and an array of uplifting brighter hues.

The forecast is led by Dulux Colour Specialists Davina Harper and Andrea Lucena-Orr in conjunction with Dulux Colour Forecaster and Stylist Bree Leech.

“The palettes we can expect to see in our homes in 2023 are predominantly warm and nurturing, with nature continuing to be a key driver of trends. Brighter hues continue however, they are deeper than last year,” Davina says.

Sustainability will be another important focus in the year ahead.

“We’re reframing our relationship with material things – it’s no longer enough that a piece is beautiful, it needs to earn its place in our homes,” Bree Leech says.

“We have all reacted to the upheavals of the last couple of years in different ways – some people crave lightness and whimsy, whilst others seek order and reassurance.

“The three palettes in the Dulux Colour Forecast 2023 reflect these differing needs, allowing you to create beautiful living spaces that reflect where you are in your life’s journey,” she says.

Interior designer from Cube Dentro Interiors, Alina Cuchiliuc says, “Different textures can give a bathroom that instant luxury feeling. Don’t be afraid to mix various textures like glass, metal, and soft neutral fabrics.

“Even adding plants, vases, candles or floating shelves, can take your bathroom to the next level.”

Considering aspects such as textures, finishings and colour pallets adds to the luxurious feeling.

If you are on a budget and are working with a small space, there are many ways you can elevate this room in your house.

Alina says the selection of tiles is important. “The smaller your bathroom is, the bigger tile you should be using”.

She says good quality bathroom fittings and fixtures are another way to go.

“Look for alternatives. There are plenty of products, which have the same quality for a better price.”

Splurging on some aspects of your bathroom and saving in other areas is a great way to make the most of your bathroom build.

For example, you may want to spend more on having a freestanding bathtub or unique handmade tiles, but decide to save money on areas such as tapware and fixtures.

Learning how to create a luxurious space through using colours and lighting secrets will mean your bathroom stands out.

Alina says light is important in order to achieve a luxurious feeling. “Ideally you would have ‘layers’ of lights to create different moods,” she says.

Rethinking about how you use lighting in this space will alter the overall energy in this space.

You might have natural lighting, light fixtures on either side of the mirror, or the more traditional downlights.

Consider if you want warm or bright lighting as this will affect this space, and how you see yourself when getting ready!

“Avoid using only recessed ceiling led lights, by adding a pendant or a wall light you would be able to instantly change the mood in your bathroom.

“Neutral, soft tones along with some accents that is the look you are aiming for.”

She suggests painting your walls can also be a good way for saving money. You may be able to save costs on painters or tilers if you have the skills to do it yourself.

“If renovating, think about reusing some of the old items and try to keep your old plumbing position for cost effectiveness.

“Also, don’t forget about the mirror! You can make a centrepiece out of it.”

If you are in the process of designing your own bathroom, or even renovating, giving yourself more room if possible and making the bathroom a decent size is essential to the luxurious design style.

“Think carefully of the layout, it needs to suit your needs and be as functional as possible.

Putting together your room is like deciding what you’ll wear for the day.

There can be lots of items to choose from and you want to express your taste, have comfort, stand out, and represent yourself authentically – especially since you’ll be spending time in your room almost every day.

When it comes to laying out your bedroom, it’s a challenge in itself.

You want to be creative and unique, but show your interests, favourite colours, photos of memories, and follow the latest trends, which are constantly changing, so it’s nice to change the layout of your bedroom whenever you like.

The bed

As referenced by your home and garden magazine, the first thing you have to know is, “Your bed should always be the focal point of the room design”.

Think about the materials of the bedhead and surrounding furniture, and find bed covers and duvets that will go well with the colour and texture of hard items like your lamp, artwork, drawers, bedside tables, desks, chairs, and so on.

Pick two or three co-ordinating colours or different shades of one colour to have a variety.

McKenzie and Willis’s interior advice on ‘Buying Guide: Duvet Covers, Bedspreads and Comforters’ stated that bedspreads or duvet covers can portray the tone of your bedroom design.

A duvet comes in many different colours and styles and is low-maintenance.

A bedspread is a “decorative layer for your bed”, which is lightweight, great for layering, fully covers a bed, and can be quilted.

Their paint colours; Dulux Manorburn Quarter, Dulux porcelain, and Dulux Dunedin would go well on the wall of any bedroom.

Bedroom accessories

The Warehouse creative director Jade Turner shared bedroom trend tips with your home and garden and says “the right colour in the bedroom can really make a difference and bedlinen is an inexpensive way to make a big change”.

He also says sage and white can create peacefulness while mixing

and matching with bright prints and patterns can “make your bedroom pop,” which makes it feel fun and lively.

“These [prints and patterns] can easily be swapped out depending on new colours and trends.”

To make the most of your space, Jade also recommends choosing

furniture and décor that will make your bedroom feel spacious.

Bedside tables and lamps on either side of the bed would display good balance. A large floor mirror against the wall will bounce the light around, alternatively, hide the mirror under the bed or wardrobe if there’s not enough space.

How to make guest bedrooms pop

Whether you want to experiment with a pop of colour or a decorative feature wall, the guest bedroom is where you can create the room of your imagination.

A guest bedroom can be a common storage room, or feel unused at times. Taking risks in the guest bedroom and using the space to your advantage, is something every homeowner should take into consideration.

Interior designer, Debbie Abercrombie, owns her selftitled design company Debbie Abercrombie Interiors.

She says simply changing out the cushions for fun colours in a space is one way to elevate a guest bedroom.

“There are many beautiful cushions available in all different colours and patterns. Plus, they are easy to change out if needed.”

Debbie says the focus in a room is the bed, especially in the guest bedroom. “Cushions can help to anchor the bed and draw eyes to the centre of the room.”

Placing furniture in the eyeline before entering the room creates curiosity and is ‘magnet’ like, Debbie says.

“Depending on where the bed is situated, you can sometimes visually see a chair, or piece of furniture before you walk into the room. This creates an inviting lead to walk into the space.”

She says in her own bedroom, she has a chair which she’s named her ‘lippy chair’. “It’s a comfortable place to put my shoes on before walking out the door.”

This chair sits at one end of the bed to balance the room. Between cushions and colour from the

chair, it helps create a story inside the room.

You want your guest to feel luxurious and comfortable in your guest room without being surrounded by clutter.

Utilising space with a set of drawers means you can store away extra things from around the house.

Depending on the length of time your guest is staying, they probably won’t need much room to unpack their belongings. A drawer inside a chest of drawers, or one side to the wardrobe for hanging space is perfectly fine.

“Inside the guest room it’s also nice to have a footstool, or a surface, where you can put a bag on. I’ve often had some form of shelf dedicated for a suitcase or travel bag,” she says.

When considering what type of decor or theme you should create in the guestroom, Debbie says wallpapers, bed heads and beautiful high-quality linen can create a relaxing space for your guests.

“Normally, when we do our guest rooms, we are drawn to non-generic, less emotion and personality in this space.”

Creating an exciting guest room however, allows you to experiment. “You probably will be drawn to colours and textures you enjoy because it is your home.

“If you don’t want to use strong patterns and colours in the guest room, different textures through the room such as multiple layered fabrics can create a journey for the guest for them to walk into.”

Here are tools for the modern kitchen that will elevate people’s chef skills, simply, yet efficiently.

The top New Zealand culinary masters have revealed their kitchen tools and which tools are the best to use when cooking at home in a new cookbook - Lodge Cast Iron New Zealand’s favourite recipes book. Tools include a Lodge cast iron.

According to Lodge Cast Iron New Zealand, Lodge Cast Iron has been making prime cookware and accessories since it was established in Tennessee, the US, in 1896, which has also been very popular in New Zealand.

The cookbook was written by Kiwis for Kiwis. It features the country’s most notable chefs and home cooks to show all the awesome recipes people can cook easily in their homes using the product.

A featured New Zealand chef, Sam Mannering, thinks people need only a few tools and the more adaptable it is, the better, so

people can get a lot of use out of the product when they’re cooking.

Another featured New Zealand chef and Cazador and Cazador delicatessen co-restaurateur, Dariush Lolaiy, also believes people only need a few kitchen tools to master their chef skills and create a wonderful dish.

“I don’t think a whole lot of cooking tools are necessary. If you’ve got good quality basics - a cast iron pan, a quality chef’s knife, and the digital probe thermometer, that’s pretty much all you need to master a good meal. Sometimes less is more if you’re using things properly.”

A modern kitchen tool Dariush recommends people use at home is a digital probe thermometer because it helps people cook meat to their liking, so they can “nail it every time”.

He says, “While actually a classic kitchen tool, a cast iron 30cm skillet is a must for any modern kitchen. It’s versatile for every heat source and can be used for intense cooking at high temperatures, or for low gentle

cookery - in either context, the heat is always even.

“I use my grandmother’s cast iron that was passed down to my mother who then passed it on to me and it’s still good as new, so that’s a sign of durability and reliability.”

confident in the kitchen because it’s simple to use and makes cooking feel like it can’t go wrong.

A cast iron works for hot and fast cooking and can work well with cooking slow dishes that people can leave in the oven for a while, “so it’s hard to really stuff it up!”

A tip Dariush recommends people do to make a great dish simple yet efficient is to cook a slowcooked dish.

“Something that you can prep in the morning like a braised lamb shank dish. Brown everything off and put all your ingredients in the cast iron and leave it in a low oven while you concentrate on other things. It’s a fail-proof and delicious dish.”

Digital probe thermometers can be bought at most decent homeware stores, he says. “Look for an instant-read variety with a fine tip.”

Starting your home aquarium journey

An aquarium is an eye-catching and fascinating addition to any living space. You can go as simple or as complicated, as big or as small as you like and bring colour, life and interest to your home.

Smaller aquariums or starter aquariums don’t require as much maintenance as large-scale projects and are less expensive than one might think.

Tank basics

There’s a few things to consider when buying your first tank. A small tank can only house small or very few fish.

A good rule of thumb from aquarium enthusiasts is “4L of water per 2.5cm of fish”. The bigger the fish or the more fish you have, the bigger the tank needs to be. Try to buy a tank that will be able to house your fish when it’s fully grown.

Most pet shops will be able to tell you how big the fish will get. Otherwise, you can “size up” your tank as your fish grows but this can be expensive and annoying for beginners.

Maintenance basics

Maintaining an aquarium can seem like a daunting task but, it’s actually fairly simple once you get the hang of it.

Most aquariums need to be “cleaned” once a week, depending on how much waste your fish are producing.

Scrubbing the walls – get a magnetic scrubber and use it to remove any algae that grows on the glass. You can do this as often as you like

Water changes – you need to syphon out around 25 percent to 50 percent of the tanks water (depending on how often you clean it) and replace it with fresh water. Make sure you’re stirring up the stones or pebbles on the bottom to loosen any sediment

Filtration changes – within your tank are “filter cartridges”. These need to be changed every two to four water changes, depending on how mucky they look Chemicals – you’ll need some kind of “tap conditioner” to add into new water to remove chemicals such as chlorine and ammonia build up.

Basic care

Like any animal, a sign your fish is unwell is a lack of desire to eat. Other signs your fish could be under the weather:

• Spending lots of time at the bottom of the tank on the pebbles

• Swimming crookedly

• Hiding when your fish may not normally do so

• Protruding scales.

Most of the time, this can be solved by a water change or treating the water with an antifungus. However, google is your friend.

Trees and shrubs can add a lot of aesthetic value to a property as well as providing refuge for birds and other wildlife. They can be great fun for kids to play around and they make an excellent admiration feature.

However, selecting the right plants for your property can be a bit of a pain, especially when it comes to size.

If you’ve only got a small section in town, you don’t want anything that’s going to overtake the yard in a few years. And, if you’ve got something a bit bigger like a quarter-acre area, you might want to choose something that’ll become a statement piece.

Here are some top trees and shrubs for your property

Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis)

A New Zealand native, the Cabbage Tree makes an excellent addition to a back yard. They thrive in wet, open areas but can grow all over the country. They don’t take up too much ground space as their trunks are reasonably thin.

This tree flowers in early summer and attract many birds to their berries that come not longer afterwards. You’d also be helping out DOC by planting a few of these as the Cabbage Tree population is declining due to a parasitic organism called a phytoplasma.

These lovely plants may start out small but they quickly become massive, some plants reaching to over four meters tall. This means they’d be more suited to someone with plenty of space to allow the bus to grow.

This lovely little hebe is another native to New Zealand and makes an excellent ground cover plant. With unique leaves and delightful flowers, it’s a great plant to edge a fence with. It’s a hardy plant and likes full sun to partial shade. Another evergreen, it won’t get the “dead stick” look in the winter like perennials. It also attracts beneficial insects to your yard and garden.

Japanese Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulate)

A vase shaped tree originating in Japan offers stunning soft pink flowers in spring. Once the lovely flowers have done their dash (this is a 2–3-week period), they’re followed by fresh foliage throughout the rest of spring.

Autumn brings on a lovely golden colour. A deciduous plant, they lose their foliage in the winter. They grow to around 6 meters tall and around 4 meters across so can be adapted for a small garden.

Dwarf Camellia (Camellia sasanqua)

With beautiful flowers and small leaves, this plant is a wonderful addition to a smaller section. It gets to around 1.2m high and a similar width. Because it’s an evergreen, it’ll stay lovely and lush all year round whilst flowering with its peony like flowers in autumn.

It’s a very hardy bush and likes partial shade. A reliable and low maintenance shrub, the dwarf camellia brings a pop of fresh colour to your yard.

Outdoor living ideas As the weather warms up and the skies begin to clear, outdoor spaces are getting more attention.

New Zealand weather can be really harsh on outdoor furniture, no matter what it’s made of so getting ahead of game is a good idea. The time of barbeques, drinks outside and dinner on the back deck is coming.

It’s time to think about what that outdoor space is going to look like.

“We’re also looking at natural colours this year,” he says. “It’s not just the colours either; it’s natural materials like wicker and wood.”

Tony says that mixed materials like wood and alloy are set to sell big this year too.

Mustard and pastels are the colours of the season this year with orange having been the colour for last year.

Tony says this can be conveyed through accessories and says he can’t emphasize the importance of accessorising a space.

“You can really make your outdoor space pop by adding things like cushions, pillows and umbrellas in the seasonal colours,” he says.

“Rather than buying a coloured outdoor seating set which can

be quite pricey, you can buy a plainer colour set or something with those mixed materials and add the colour yourself.”

Another top trend for this season is low dining. “This trend has been around for a bit but is really coming in this year.

“The furniture is really low to the ground so you’re almost sitting on the ground but not quite.

“People are also getting into things like drinks trolleys and loungers more than they were a few years ago.”

All of this really illustrates the overarching trend of bringing the indoors outside this season.

Starting from scratch

Part 1: Demolition and foundations

Nathan Applegarth, a Secure Scaffold manager, is the owner of his newly built house that he helped build in Parklands, Christchurch.

The demolition and foundation process weren’t too bad because being in the trades sector made the process a bit easier, Nathan says.

He has a lot of contacts, which helped. The demolition of his old house started in January this year.

Firstly, the engineering part took place before it was built. After that, there were only a few minor issues like time delays because of the company’s workload.

The company Nathan hired to put in the internal doors was Independent Doors. The company had about a six or seven-week delay which turned over in eight weeks.

The internal doors were only meant to take five weeks, and then the company ended up turning it around four weeks earlier due to receiving pressure from the builder, Nathan says.

The only unexpected surprise he had was the cost of things as he underbudgeted and miscalculated.

However, he says, “Everything I got was pretty good value for money”.

What went well that Nathan was most proud of with the first stages of the build was saving money by using his friend’s companies for different tasks required.

He had a friend help with the foundation, which saved him $20,000. But when it came to the demolition, he over-budgeted.

During the process, between five to 10 people worked on the

Big manicured back garden, swimming pool, four bedrooms – what do you think home buyers are looking for?

There are some things you can’t change about your property, but you can take measures to change the smaller, practical things which will endeavour to enhance your home and give it a better chance of selling.

I talk to business owner and manager Lynnette McFadden of Harcourts Gold in Christchurch about the selling power of a home.

In order of importance which features contribute the most as whether a house will sell or not?

The importance of various features regularly changes, however the current standouts include:

• Kitchens that are crisp and attractive, connecting easily to a dining area (not room) and living spaces. As well as smart bathrooms (with a bath!)

• Orientation to the sun and light

• An easy connection between the house and the outdoor or garden area. The old adage of indoor/outdoor flow definitely matters to today’s purchaser

• Living rooms or areas which are congruent with the number of bedrooms. Lots of bedrooms with only one living area falls short for a lot of people

• Method of construction, buyers are wary of particular cladding systems.

What are the simple and inexpensive features homeowners can ‘fix’ to improve the selling power of their home?

Start from the outside and work inwards:

• Well maintained grounds and gardens, trees trimmed, paths swept

• Odours, unless they are lovely, are a no no. Smoking, dogs, cats, mould! Get these sorted

• Nothing creaking or leaking

• Fix all light bulbs and electrical appliances. These are the little things that create an impression of care. Painting, clearing and/or upgrading come after these.

Which features generally add little or no value?

The invisibles, the specialist items that you love but no one else cares for or values and if they do, don’t want to pay for them.

• High-end electronic items, speakers or sound systems

Building energy efficient homes

The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC), are a not-for-profit membership organisation, working alongside the construction and property sectors in Aotearoa.

They have a vision for all homes and buildings in Aotearoa to be green and sustainable, making healthier, happier New Zealanders.

NZGBC chief executive Andrew Eagles says, “We have over 700 members from throughout the country, from construction companies, developers, architecture firms, to councils, universities, real estate agents and bankers.

“These are all people who want to see property and construction do its bit in reducing our environmental impacts.”

NZGBC advocates for regulatory and industry-wide change, as well as improving building standards.

Part of this work includes providing independent and trusted certification for building projects. For new homes NZGBC runs Homestar, a certification assessing the health, efficiency and sustainability of homes built across Aotearoa.

Andrew says a typical New Zealand home build produces five times the amount of pollution to stay within our climate targets. He says there’s a huge opportunity to reduce emissions with every new home built.

“There has been a massive rush of people wanting lower carbon and energy efficient homes.

“Just over a year ago there were 8,000 homes being built to Homestar, compared to around 500 five years ago.”

Homes built to the Homestar standard need to meet certain standards. These include “Reducing waste going to landfill, are healthier, warmer, have better air quality, and are more resilient to the effects of climate change”.

He says some of the benefits of building a house to better standards like Homestar include

“lower energy bills, and it’s also a great selling point if you want to sell your home in the future.

“We’re also seeing an increase in green lending, with major banks now offering better lending rates and incentives for those building to sustainable standards like Homestar.”

If you are in the process of building a new home, sometimes it can be tricky to understand the steps your builder has taken to ensure you have the least environmental impact possible.

“Often, it’s hard to know if they have put in energy efficient insulation, especially if there is any information imbalance.

“That’s where it’s useful to have a third-party opinion on the health and sustainability of the home.

“We have trained Homestar professionals throughout the industry who are happy to check the design and construction of a property. They ensure aspects such as energy and water efficiency, as well as air tightness are considered and up to spec.”

NZGBC is currently working on encouraging the New Zealand government into retro-fitting and improving existing homes across

the country. “Currently, 30 percent of existing homes are damp or mouldy. Our goal is to get the government to improve this.”

The NZGBC is pushing for the government to establish a deep retrofit programme like many OECD countries. Andrews says he is hopeful and positive the government will eventually fund and support these changes for healthier homes.

Changes in the New Zealand Building Code are also on their way. “Builders and contractors should prepare for the coming changes in the building code, particularly with the likely changes in 2025 from the ‘Building for Climate Change Programme’.”

Demand for new homes as well as building consents, to keep up with this fast-paced growing city, is noted by Dunedin City Council.

Overall, the population growth for Dunedin is positive and will continue to bring more revenue and culture to the city.

Affordable homes underway in Arrowtown

The Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) has broken ground on its 68-lot Tewa Banks development in Arrowtown.

Earthworks commenced in late September for the new development, which comprises 68 new high-quality and energyefficient affordable homes.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2025.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) Mayor, Jim Boult, and QLCHT Deputy Chair Joanne Conroy, turned the first sods of soil on this significant community housing project, following a blessing by local kaumātua Darren Rewi.

Mayor Boult says this muchneeded development has been many years in the making.

QLCHT executive officer, Julie Scott, says it’s exciting for the organisation to finally be breaking ground.

“We’ve received resounding feedback from the community of the need for more affordable housing in Arrowtown, and accordingly we’re truly excited to start building 68 new homes for local singles, couples and families.”

The allocation process for the mixture of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes is anticipated to start mid-2023, and will include several homes specifically allocated for senior housing.

About 45 homes are expected to be sold into the Trust’s awardwinning Secure Home programme.

Hiring new employees is not an easy process.

But if you want your company to grow, you need to hire the right people.

You need people that are not only right for the now but can also help you move the business towards bigger and better things in the future.

This is especially so for smaller businesses and startups because they have fewer employees and a limited income with which to work.

For these companies every single dollar they spend on finding and hiring an employee can affect their longer term success, meaning it’s vital that they avoid making major mistakes while hiring.

But the trouble is that running a small business is hard work and there often simply isn’t the time to commit to a thorough hiring process; and as result, corners get cut.

The good news is that your competitors are probably making these mistakes whilst hiring as well. This means there’s an opportunity for you to seize; to waste less time and money by hiring right so you can get back to running your company.

Mistake 1 - NOT HAVING AN INTERVIEW PLAN

The single biggest hiring mistake small business owners make is winging it or not having an interview plan. At best they’ll have a few questions written down on a piece of paper, but little else.

You need to treat an interview like a deductive science. You’ve sorted through all the resumes and selected the best individuals to be interviewed – but now you need a better way of evaluat ing their suitability for the role than just having a chat and going with your gut.

You achieve this by having an interview plan.

First – decide what questions are the most important, and ask them to each candidate.

Second – know what answers you’re looking for. Then you can assess each answer objectively and place candidates in pecking order.

This doesn’t have to be an iron-clad, exactly repeatable process – but it does need to have some consistency to it so you can accurately assess candidates’ answers in relation to each other.

If you just wing each interview, the direction, tone and outcome of each conversation can vary wildly, making it more difficult to compare candidates to each other. The outcome of this can be that, despite spending all that time interviewing people, to a certain extent, you’re still none the wiser.

Then, the chances are, when it comes to deciding who to hire, you’re going to go with your gut, as you won’t reliably be able to compare one answer to another because you didn’t ask each candidate a few standard questions you can compare them by.

So, a little planning can go a long way towards helping you make an informed and considered choice of who to hire, as opposed to just sitting down with each individuals, having a completely random chat, and then hoping you get it right.

Mistake 2 - OVERVALUING EXPERIENCE

It is risky to bet too heavily on how much experience a person has, when there are so many factors that determine whether someone will be successful in the role and a good fit for your organisation.

An applicant’s skills, knowledge, aptitude and personality all factor into the equation.

Because experience is a tangible and measurable component, it is very easy to overvalue it above less easily measurable factors such as intelligence, drive, and other components of raw talent.

Experience accumulates with time in the role and skills can be learned and acquired.

Your next great employee might be someone with limited experience, but who has fantastic aptitude and flexibility.

So, as with all aspects of running your business, you need to find a balance.

But it definitely pays to consider more than just the experience a candidate comes with. You want someone with the potential to grow into the perfect for your company.

Mistake 3 - ASSUMING THE HIRING PROCESS ENDS ONCE THEY’RE HIRED

This is a common mistake many small business owners make.

An employee’s productivity is comprised of 50 percent ability [the reasons you hired them], and 50 percent of what happens once they’re in the workplace.

So conducting a good interview, offering that promising person the job and them saying ‘yes’ is only half the task.

Employees need to be properly induced and introduced to your company, well trained and supported.

It doesn’t matter how impressed you are with someone’s potential – poor training, insufficient access to resources, and little feedback will add up to poor job satisfaction and this will impact their performance.

$200 million retirement village for Wanaka

If you’re looking for a space to retire look no further; as retirement village giant Metlifecare has confirmed the resort town’s third retirement village is in the slow cooker.

The company, which operates 32 North Island retirement villages, has purchased 5.42ha at the Three Parks development where it plans to invest $200M to create a new, top-of-the-line village.

The village will include 120 villas, seven apartments and a residential care facility, and the first stage of construction is hoped to start next year and open for the first residents in 2025.

“We’re really pleased to welcome Metlifecare to Wānaka,” Three Parks developer Allan Dippie said, adding that it would be the first

residential project to begin within the development.

Metlifecare head of development Matt Wickham said the retirement village project could create up to 140 construction jobs in the Wānaka community during the building phase and another 50 once operational.

“With large-scale development projects comes multiple opportunities for local businesses and workers,” he says.

Metlifecare would also be looking to fill a range of positions from village managers and nurses to kitchen staff and gardeners, Matt said.

While substantial in size, the retirement village will fill just a fraction of the 160ha Three Parks site, which fills a triangle between the Wānaka-Luggate highway,

Riverbank Road and Ballantyne Road, and already features a range of commercial, retail and recreational buildings, with many more in the works.

“Metlifecare wants to get started on the project as soon as possible, so from our end we are swinging straight into action with the earthworks to prepare the site together with roading and the extensive underground

infrastructure to service such a large development,” Allan says.

“It’s a very exciting project for Wānaka and this announcement will be followed by more significant projects within Three Parks.”

Wānaka currently has two retirement villages, as well as one aged care facility, which operates across two sites.

When renovating any part of a home, it can be tricky to know what to do with the materials you remove.

Recycling these materials is a great option, but where do you start?

We speak with Anthony Richards from The Salvage Company in Christchurch to get the best advice for recycling building materials.

What can be recycled?

Anything can be recycled, it’s just if there’s a demand for it. You might not get much for something

if it’s cheap to buy new. Recycling whatever you can is good though because it keeps your dumping costs and carbon footprint down.

What should people who are building or renovating look out for?

If someone is renovating, you’ve got to make sure you’re not dealing with asbestos. We cannot demolish a house if it doesn’t have an asbestos clearance certificate. Yes, it’s expensive, but the material is very dangerous. You can’t just dump asbestos – it has to be specially handled, wrapped and dumped. You need to get it taken out by the professionals.

What are recyclable building materials worth?

Depends on the people’s expectations. Sometimes they might be replacing windows and they’re taking out single glazing aluminium and putting in double glazing. No one wants single glazed anymore and they’re not worth a lot. Basically, you ring up various salvage firms and tell them what you have. It depends on what you’ve got. They’ll ask for a photo of the stuff and they’ll give you a quote.

What are some dos and don’ts of recycling building materials?

Generally when you’re taking materials out, you want to take it

out as carefully as possible. Don’t just rip it out and toss it in a pile. If you want any money for it or you want someone to take it, you need to be careful. You might be renovating the kitchen and don’t think about it and suddenly you’ve got an expensive dumping bill. Dumping is expensive! So, take stuff out carefully and make sure it’s reusable.

The golden rule of recycling is that you need to have an end usage for it. People want to on sell it without spending too much time or money on it.

Not everything is recyclable. Some things are just too old. Ask yourself why you’re doing the renovations. Is it because you don’t like it or it’s too old?

The best thing to do when you take stuff out and you’re reasonably competent is to get touch with a salvage company like mine and just say look I’ve got this and that, send some photos, put the effort in and you might be surprised what you can get for it.

Small footprints

Tiny homes are becoming more of a common sight as people look for new housing options.

With the housing market sky rocketing and the view of what a home should look like shifting, it’s no wonder these tiny homes are trending.

They’re often transportable and they’re smaller which means they’re easy to clean, cheaper to heat and encourage a more minimalist lifestyle.

Popular with people heading down a more environmental route, they’re a great option for those looking to try something new. However, with a smaller home comes certain logistical difficulties.

For example; toilets! Tiny homes aren’t very well equipped for a full plumbing system so a bogstandard flushing loo just isn’t practical. This is where WCTNZ or Waterless Composting Toilets New Zealand comes in. \WCTNZ founder and managing director, Dylan Timney, says there are several benefits of a waterless composting toilet.

“They really help with the reduction of consumption of water,” he says. “Tiny homes have a small catchment for potable water so flushing it away seems pointless.”

Using a waterless composting toilet can save approximately 60,000 liters of fresh, drinkable water per household annually. Another benefit is that using waterless composting toilets means you create less biohazardous waste water.

“Grey water, like what you get from washing your dishes is less soiled than flushed toilet water,” explains Dylan.

This means users are reducing their overall waste discharge which is better for the environment.

The environment, of course, is a massive part of why Dylan began the company in the first place. He stumbled across the concept of waterless composting toilets back in 2007 when looking for a loo for his house bus.

Not only did the idea seem like a good solution for small homes but he saw a lot of environmental potential. “We need to take responsibility for the waste we generate,” he says.

“Plus, it’s not just waste – we can use it to nurture the soil.”

Dylan says that when we view human excreta as simply waste, an extremely important part of the nutrient cycle of the earth is broken. “This leads to needing lots of chemical fertilizers and creates lower quality food with less nutrients,” he says.

Instead, when our waste is composted properly and returned to the soil, it creates a valuable and safe product and helps keep the cycle going for future generations. “We need to invest in nature,” Dylan says.

“The company slogan is ‘in nature, we trust’ and in order to do that, we need to invest.”

“In an age where humanity’s relationship with the earth is in desperate need of reform, we are proud to be working with a range of products which are solutionbased and undoubtedly have a positive impact on both the planet and the people who use them,” Dylan says.

However, it’s not an easy industry to be in. The world view around waterless compostable toilets isn’t all niceties. Dylan spends a lot of time in education mode; making sure people understand how the technology works and dispelling myths.

“A common question is whether the toilets smell,” he says. “I think people liken these toilets to old long drops but, in reality, would a company actually sell a product that smells?”

The composting toilets that WCTNZ works with are hygienic,

odourless, cost effective and are easily maintained. They also look comfortable in the bathroom.

He says this is why they’re putting a lot of effort into running support lines and offering educational information. “We need to support people as much as we can.”

Overall though, Dylan says the customer base appears to be concerned citizens. They’re interested in taking care of themselves and the environment. He says the company is focused on pioneering on a level of expert knowledge and innovation with regards to the technology.

Musgrove’s

To fully appreciate and experience Musgrove’s huge range of recycled and new building materials that they have available for sale, a visit is highly recommended. You’ll be amazed at the variety of sheds to explore and fossick through.

This iconic Canterbury company has been recycling building materials for the last 50 years and they’re really good at it. Not only do they have an incredible range of products that are amazingly well organised, but they have also built themselves a reputation for providing exceptional service.

Their General Manager, Sue Brown, confirms that Musgroves has thousands of repeat customers who come from all round the South Island (and beyond) to find treasures for their latest project. “The reasons why our customers visit us vary, depending on their current project. It may be that they need to replace the roofing iron on their chicken coop for example, or they may want to find some doors and/or windows for the

playhouse they’re building their kids”. Sue recalls that a gratifying customer project was undertaken by David of Decant Vintners & Epicures (Christchurch).

Embarking on a new business venture, David wanted to make a grand statement with his shop frontage. He found a fabulous recycled french door with an arched top at Musgroves which has transformed their shop frontage. David’s door was fittingly rescued from an old pub located not far from Cathedral Square in Christchurch, which had been held in storage for many years before being recovered. This is not uncommon for Musgroves to hear of these types of stories about treasures being rescued after some years, before being passed on for some else to restore them.

It would appear that there are many more similar and delightful stories and photographs being shared by Musgroves’ customers. You only need to take a look at their ‘customer projects’ page on their website, where many of their talented “Wall of Fame” customers demonstrate a clear sense of pride from their use of recycled materials for their build and/or renovation projects.
