Dyers Road ITM Commercial – getting businesses back on their feet Dyers Road ITM Commercial and its associated manufacturing divisions, VIP Frames and Trusses and VIP Structural Steel, are significant players in the Christchurch and Canterbury construction industry. You just have to take a drive past its stock holding yard and see the scores of pre-nailed frames waiting to be delivered to building sites by the company’s own fleet of trucks, to realise the truth of that statement. Founded by Keith Caldwell more than 30 years ago as Dyers Road Timber, the company has seen phenomenal growth, especially during the last decade, to be one of the leaders in the provision of frames and trusses to residential projects in Christchurch. In the early days it generally provided framing for about one house a day; currently it is anything up to 10 houses a day.

Dyers Road ITM Commercial is now focusing on the many commercial projects and new developments that are going to help Christchurch’s business community get back on its feet. “Commercial development is the next phase in the rebuild of Canterbury,” says Andrew Reeves, business development manager. “We want to play a part in bringing small and mediumsized lifestyle businesses back into Christchurch. Most of our people are from the east side of town and it’s almost a sense of duty for many of us to be involved.” Dyers Road ITM Commercial has been heavily involved in a number of recent projects. There was the commercial and retail development at the Longhurst subdivision and a 70-unit development in Timaru, as well as the Mike Greer Commercial build of 12-high stud warehouses at the new Central Business Park in Sockburn. The company provided timber, plywood and structural steel for the projects. “A primary focus for us is timing

and we’re working in partnership with our customers to reduce on-site delays,” Andrew says. “Because we do both structural steel and pre-nailed timber, both can be ready from day one. That can save up to two weeks on a residential build and even more time on a commercial build.” Dyers Road ITM has also upgraded its drive through, its timber yard, product showroom and is currently upgrading its offices. Stock holding capacity has also been increased. “We can now hold large amounts of bulk stock ensuring we can always provide continuity of supply to our customers.”

Investing in our city’s future

Getting back to basics

Growth by acquisition

It’s been fantastic to see progress on two major projects in Christchurch in recent months, with work underway on the Convention Centre site and the new Burwood Hospital open for patients.

Business in New Zealand continues to be demanding and when it is, we must get back to the basics.

Looking for a quick fix to grow your business? Got the infrastructure ready but simply need a sudden influx of raw sales?

Norman Vincent Peale said “In every difficult situation is potential value. Believe this and then begin looking for it.”

The Convention Centre has been one of the most hotly discussed topics in Christchurch in recent months, so it’s great to see work started on this important facility.

There will be companies in any environment that due to their positioning and competencies can capitalise on any silver lining.

Well then maybe growth by acquisition is the answer for you. I highlight maybe it is the answer because it is certainly never a ‘one size fits all’ solution.

Months of design and planning work have gone into the project and it’s on course to open in late 2019. An indicative design has been released to give people an idea of what to expect and I think it looks great. The Government is committed to ensuring the Convention Centre Precinct is world-class, and supported by quality accommodation, hospitality and retail facilities. Otakaro – the company we’ve set up to deliver key anchor projects – is leading the process to identify and appoint contractors to confirm the final design and builders for the Convention Centre. In other progress, the $215 million redevelopment of Burwood Hospital is now complete and open. In total, Canterbury is receiving close to $1 billion in new hospital facilities over the next few years. Along with the Acute Services Building and the new Outpatients facility, this represents the most significant public hospital project ever in New Zealand. Delivering better health services continues to be a top priority for the National-led Government. That’s why we’re investing a record $16.1 billion into health this year. Thousands of New Zealanders are already benefitting from that extra investment. Another sign of progress in the regeneration of the city, has been the opening of The Terraces promenade. This $10 million redevelopment follows the river from the hospital to the Margaret Mahy playground and creates a lovely space for people to gather, play, shop and dine. Finally, many people in Canterbury and the rest of New Zealand are concerned about housing and quite rightly so. New Zealand has a strong, growing economy and that’s putting extra pressure on our housing market. It’s a challenge the National-led Government is facing head on. We have a comprehensive plan underway to deal with housing issues. Recently I announced the latest step - a $1 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund to accelerate new housing in high-growth areas like Christchurch. The new fund will focus squarely on financing the roads, water and other important infrastructure needed to support new housing. There are no quick fixes to this issue, but our comprehensive housing plan is delivering results. We are now in the midst of the biggest building boom New Zealand has ever seen and are committed to building on this momentum.

Decision makers need to take decisive action. It is essential that they combat the pressures and respond to market and economic conditions in a way that minimises negative effects. There are four primary areas in any business that I consider the basics. These are strategy, action plans (and execution), the organisations culture and its structure. The ultimate success of most company’s will always depend on the skills (competencies) and experience it has developed and the commitment of its people. Your strategy needs to be clearly understood, well communicated and be developed around a sound value proposition for your clients. Business success is always rooted in value. When your capabilities match your clients' needs, both parties achieve value. When that value is equitable both companies can prosper. Think about where you are today, where you want to be in the near and long-term future and how you might get to that future point. Ask yourself what and why questions. What is it we are trying to achieve and why? Action planning is the tool to make your strategic intent happen. You need to clearly define clear objectives. What is the required action and why is it being done? When will the action point be completed and by whom? What resources are required in time and money to make this action happen? Are there any other considerations? And how will we achieve this? Inspire your team through being the strong leader they desire and need. Ensure you have people around you that have the ability and desire to make things happen. Your best chance of success will come from your team, clients and colleagues who understand the situation and share the will to achieve the vision and goals. Keep your structure simple. Have less layers of management and more degrees of empowerment. Promote communication, co-operation, teamwork and knowledge sharing. Ensure your sales teams are equipped with the best selling skills available. Make sure they know how to sell value though benefits and not compete on price. Discounting is a one way street to oblivion. Upskill your company; match and develop your skills to your clients' needs. Look for new ways to meet your client’s issues and concerns.

Growth by acquisition has been around for many years and has served many businesses, but it has tripped up a good many too. The typical pitfalls and traps include (but are not limited to): Insufficient time spent on due diligence. I can’t express enough that the time checking the numbers before acquisition will reap magnificent returns later. Run the numbers through your financial models, check capacity; can you actually produce enough output to support the additional sales you will achieve from the merged party? People power. What staff are coming with the organisation? Are they key to the success, or is there a need to trim excesses as part of the merger? What holiday pay entitlements are being taken over, sick leave, long service leave? Or is it a fresh employment agreement in which case you might not secure the staff retention. Company culture. Is there a different culture in the incoming party? Will this enhance or detract from your own? What is your control mechanism to ensure it doesn’t turn into a reverse takeover? Have you got the skills in-house, or at least hired in change management assistance? Will the new and improved version of your business be “This is the way we do things around here” or open to improvements? Have you got a system for submitting suggestions for improvements? Cashflow. Cash is always king. Have you assessed inflow and outflows in the interim while the new people (let’s call them mergettes) come up to speed with new surroundings, systems and bosses? What are new overheads going to look like, what savings can be obtained through economies of scale? Duplication. We see all too often where parties merge through acquisition, that some positions simply double, whereas they could be better served by a structural change. Managing the people is always harder than managing production, sales and even distribution. The human element has emotions and feelings, the rest is pure mathematics. Natural attrition. It’s inevitable that in any merger there will be a fallout of clients. The key is to manage the fallout and minimise the impact. So growth by acquisition is great if you work it. The option is organic growth which can be even better, but typically takes a lot more time. Either way – happy growing!

Do you really need an accountant?

Will hot desking work for you?

The sailing of the three ships

You might think that a start-up or small business isn’t big enough to warrant using an accountant and it’s just another cost you can do without. But unless you’re an expert in business structures, tax and finance, then using an accountant or better still, a Chartered Accountant, to get expert financial advice is money well invested.

One of the most popular topics in workspace design at the moment is hot desking.

Entrepreneurship, relationships or leadership? Which one steers the mainsail?

With its ability to service a variety of users and situations, the main advantages of hot desking are the savings made due to the need for less furniture and less floor space.

Much like the principal sail on a ship, entrepreneurship is seen as the driver for many new business leaders and innovators. It’s the passion or belief in an unexplored destiny that drives an entrepreneur to seek.

So do you really need an accountant? Too often small businesses fail to seek the right advice due to time and budget constraints, but this is important to ensure you are on the right path.

Hot desking has also been used overseas in organisations that are encouraging a more mobile workforce, moving teams around the whole office space on a regular basis to keep perspectives fresh and get people thinking outside the square.

If you are starting or buying a business or franchise your accountant will take the form of another business advisor. They will review the financials, help with recasting figures and doing forecasts, and give advice on your business plan and the tax issues when registering or buying your new business.

For some people though, the idea of hot desking is all a step too far. For those who may be working with physical files – for example, accountants, lawyers, architects and engineers, the practicality of moving to another location in the office is simply not realistic. Also, there are always going to be some people (whatever their role or profession), that like to have their ‘own’ workspace, with their personal photos, images, plants, and furniture; ‘their space’.

Most accountants will also offer book-keeping services, but if they don’t, or if you wish to handle this yourself, you can get help with setting up manual or computerised bookkeeping systems. Today there are several online packages like; Xero, MYOB and Quickbooks to mention just a few. Most accountants will be able to assist you in getting these set-up and working for your business.

When buying or starting a business you need the expert advice and guidance to ensure you get it right. Your accountant can potentially help with valuing a business, calculating the EBPIDT (the total cash surplus or sellers discretionary cash), and help with due diligence if you are purchasing an existing business. They can also offer advice on your best business ownership structure, provide guidance on the best way to handle your day to day cash and accounting, advise on tax and IRD requirements, and ensure your cash-flow forecasts and budgets work for you and any other interested parties. Business tax is a large expense for most businesses. When calculating company tax there are a lot of factors to consider; depreciation, losses carried forward, deductible expenses etc. Your accountant will consider all these factors and how best to manage and minimise the tax you pay. A good accountant will provide your business with essential support. They will understand the rules and regulations and how they apply to you, and help you manage your financial risk, minimize your costs and steer your business to success.

This concept is fine for organisations where people only require occasional computer access throughout the day (or week), such as those with sales staff or shift workers sharing spaces in call centres.

So with the corporate demands leaning more towards people moving into open plan offices, how do we strike the right balance between personal and impersonal work places? Unless carefully and thoughtfully implemented, businesses run the risk of appearing like ‘big brother’, making wholesale decisions with little input from staff members. Organisations need to prepare well to hot desk successfully. Research from overseas shows that a hot desking environment only really works in a paperless office and that – as businesses work through the process of scanning documents and getting electronic document transfer and storage systems in place - can take up to three years. Regardless of whether or not we like it, it seems that this more fluid use of space is becoming more common place; so, if hot desks are going to be a part of your office space, what can you do to make them a more welcoming place to be rather than a soul-less pit stop? Be sure to keep in mind the functionality of your office space, and be mindful of the tasks your staff members perform in that space, so you can get the best outcome for your business, and be sure to allow some flexibility as your business and all these technology systems evolve. Overall, do your homework; size it all up well before you start moving to get a better idea if hot desking will be a good fit for your business.

That being said, it is relationships that provide entrepreneurs with the opportunity for collaboration, funding, innovation and eventually selling an idea or product. Even in a world primarily driven by technology, the greatest power comes from our ability to connect with people. Can an entrepreneur be an effective leader if their focus is on an outcome or an achievement? In my view, they can - providing they have capability in the final ‘ship’. Leadership is like the anchor holding vision and relationships together. Achieving results or advancing in an organisation will depend more on your ability to lead others and build a relationship, than to just come up with a new idea. In a recent conversation I had with a new leader, he was challenged in his own thinking. Should he focus on innovation and support the long term company objective, spend more time connecting to industry experts where he could build on his own intellectual property, or focus on building his ability to lead and delegate? I had to pause for a moment before responding. I asked him “why can’t you do all three?” Prioritise them for sure, and remember you have a day job which you need to perform however, you may find that if you are focused on innovation, your peer experts may provide you with an insightful sounding board. If you focus on improving your ability as a leader, the increase in your communication skills will in turn enhance your ability to build professional relationships. He pushed again, “yes, but which ‘ship’ carries the most weight?” I took a moment to reflect; for me the big win is in relationships; being the person who identifies and removes obstacles and is known as the one who fosters an environment where others excel, wins every time. Developing your talent to deepen relationships is a mechanism to self-improvement, because when your focus is on listening and gaining information, you are seen as a team player. When you strive to build relationships and don’t view people as a resource, you will be seen as the connector of all three ‘ships’. If you can connect the person with a great idea to the person who can lead it to fruition, you will build a relationship that lasts and that will be your greatest achievement.

Seven resolutions for a healthy headspace

How to simplify your busy life

1. Prioritise your happiness and health It’s important to decide your health and happiness is number one. As simple as it sounds, if you don’t have these, you are not in a position to contribute to others or yourself. Everything stems from here. 2. Spend more time with the right people Rather than resolving to spend more time with everyone – which can be exhausting – spend time with people who are naturally positive and uplifting, and who are going in the direction you want to go in. You’ll find these people have an energising effect on you. 3. Deal with toxic relationships You can identify toxic relationships by the way they make you feel; people who are controlling, overly emotional, or blame everyone else. Stand your ground, set your boundaries and make it clear to them what behaviour you won’t accept - even with family. You may need to disengage altogether from particularly toxic people. Your health will thank you for it. 4. Reassess your happiness at work This is must for those in a negative work culture that’s leaving them feeling overworked, uncertain of their future, anxious or stressed. It’s important to know that you can address the issue at your current place of work. If you can’t, it may be time to look for a healthier work environment.

Is it just my noticing, or are you also seeing an increasing commentary and focus on decluttering and simplifying? It’s not just things: it could be activities or even people. Can you reduce driving time? I know many working professionals who get clients to come to their offices, but since I moved to the country nearly an hour out of Auckland, I’d been in the habit of going to my clients’ premises. I realised how much time was being wasted driving around Auckland. From that day on I started to shift all my clients to Skype or an equivalent medium – and no one minds! With Skype’s video camera and screen sharing functions you can still read the body language and see anything they want to show you. • What unnecessary driving are you doing? • Could more of your meetings be done online? • How else can you get information? I’m not suggesting that we forego all ‘in the same room’ meetings, but let’s save them for the times we really need to. Reduce space and you’ll find you don’t need so much stuff One of my tenants sold her large four bedroom home and shifted into my small one bedroom rental flat while she looked to buy another property. ‘Do you miss your big house, Donna?’ I asked her.

You will be able to read, forecast and manage the numbers behind the business and develop an action plan to improve financial stability. To register, go to: www.theicehouse.co.nz

5. Review your daily routine It takes courage to admit there are decisions we ourselves make that deflate us emotionally – from accepting a job with a long work commute, to running around too much, to not giving ourselves enough ‘down’ time every day, to spending too much and putting ourselves in financial stress. By resolving to develop a strategy to solve them, you can be in an entirely different place by the end of 2016. And you’ll be glad for it.

‘Not at all,’ she replied. ‘It’s amazing how much more simple life is now. I’ve realised I don’t need anything like the size of the old house. My things have been in storage for six months and I haven’t even missed them. My next place will be small.’

6. Don’t let negative emotions control you Negative emotions, however small, can overwhelm anything positive. Resolve to develop awareness of when you’re feeling upset or frustrated before it spoils your day. Examine your part in this. What can you do personally to make yourself feel better? Each time you begin to feel down, take a walk or go out in the sun, because nature and movement nurture positive emotions.

When something new comes in to your office, home or garage, remove two things you don’t now use. Put them in the recycle bin or donate to a charity shop.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Office de-cluttering The space closest to you is your most precious. Think of it as your ‘interruption zone’.

This half day course is an ideal opportunity for senior managers and business owners to understand their health and safety responsibilities to their business, learn to implement a practical health and safety system and make their workplace safer.

7. The gift of giving You can find deep fulfilment and connection in philanthropic or charitable work, so try getting involved in a community group, nursing home or the like, and volunteer some of your time.

The following clever wardrobe de-clutter trick was popularised by Oprah Winfrey, although she didn’t dream it up. Reverse all your hangers. When you wear something, place it back with the hanger facing in the normal direction. After six months it will be obvious what you can let go.

If that valuable real estate is cluttered, it slows down your thinking. At a sub-conscious level, you’re constantly sifting and sorting to seek the next task. If possible shift everything you’re not working on to a desk, shelf or table to the side or behind – out of your direct eye line. Keep in front of you only the task you’re engaged with and your focus will significantly increase.

The talent challenge By Leanne Crozier

One of the greatest challenges facing Christchurch businesses is retaining the managers and executives that have been brought in or grown as a result of the rebuild. The city’s post-quake boom is still a unique selling point for Canterbury businesses wanting to attract highly qualified candidates to their organisation. Professionals want to be a part of the once in a lifetime opportunity that the rebuild represents – and which the post-quake economic strength provides. Christchurch has a lot to offer right now and in the medium to long term. Our local economy is strong and with more than $70 billion dollars being pumped into the regeneration of the inner city, it’s creating a real buzz for talent acquisition. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Medium to long-term employment outlook: looking ahead to 2023 forecasts employment trends will remain above the long-run average (1.7 percent) in the medium term to 2019, but will start declining thereafter. Decipher Group directors Leanne Crozier and Sarch Every

<

Strong employment growth is expected in the retail trade and accommodation, business services, construction, utilities and certain manufacturing industries such as machinery, equipment and metal products. Service industries including health care, social assistance, the arts, recreation and other personal services are forecast to experience moderate growth.

While staff turnover is inevitable, there are certain things businesses can do to enhance their chances of holding onto top talent.

you’ll be surrounded by a team of thinkers who actively seek out innovative concepts and ideas. Pay your staff what they’re worth It might seem obvious, but if you scrimp on salaries you’ll end up losing your most valued staff. People who are underpaid quickly become resentful. Those who are well-compensated and recognised for their efforts will invariably work harder and stay committed.

The employment of highly skilled occupations, including managers and professionals, will be strongest and is projected to account for about 58 percent of the nation’s staffing demand to 2024.

How to retain top talent

There’s no question many of Canterbury’s core industries have benefited from the rebuild economy, expanding their ranks to maximise new business opportunities. But the war to recruit high calibre staff has triggered a shift from talent attraction to retention – and this will be a major challenge for Christchurch as the rebuild begins to wind down.

Create a team of empowered people that arrive to work with purpose. They understand the principles that drive the company and recognise the benefits of doing a great job. Share your vision and goals with your staff. Help them understand what you do and how their role contributes to achievement of the overall objectives.

Business leaders need to start thinking outside the box and find ways to continue challenging these extraordinary people so they don’t become complacent or think the grass is greener elsewhere.

Encourage growth and provide a career path

Manage workloads We all have those diehard employees who refuse to ask for help and silently struggle under volumes of work. However, employees who are constantly overworked will eventually break mentally, or start putting in a sub-standard performance.

The best executives are highly motivated people that are driven by new challenges. They need to know there is a career path in front of them and that by working hard and contributing their intellectual property, they’ll be rewarded – not just financially, but in terms of personal and professional growth.

Sometimes biting the bullet and hiring more staff to handle increased workflow will allow your team to concentrate on doing a great job on every project. This will give them the satisfaction of meeting, or exceeding your expectations, and provide you with a better overall result.

Support your staff by investing in training programmes to expand their knowledge, enable them to research new ideas and increase their exposure to business development opportunities within your organisation. Not only will their enhanced skill-set directly benefit the day-to-day running of your business, but

Businesses have a unique market opportunity in Christchurch so make the most of it. Start by defining an executive leadership strategy, develop an innovative, forward-thinking approach to recruitment and surround yourself by people that push you to do a better job, every day.

They need to start developing executive leadership and growth strategies to maintain a highly skilled workforce and ensure their business will be viable in five and 10 years’ time. Industry research shows that three in four New Zealand professionals are open to hearing about new job opportunities. If Christchurch is to keep hold of its greatest assets, we must overcome our desire to maintain ‘business as usual’ and instead focus on the successful execution of leadership activities that will move a business into the future.

TEN ROLES a CEO must play Today CEOs are expected to serve as experts in a wide range of areas – by their investors, their boards, their employees and the public. Stephen Miles, CEO of The Miles Group, which advises global organisations, their boards, and leadership teams, looks at the many hats CEOs must wear in today’s environment. CEO roles are more complex than ever, requiring a broad and deep skill set

<

“The CEO position is more complex than it ever has been, and CEOs must have a much broader and deeper skill set to tackle this complexity,” Stephen says. “The incredibly fast paced and demanding market means that leaders must take on different roles to address the needs of multiple stakeholders – and that’s not easy.”

1. Strategic multi-tasker The biggest challenge for CEOs in 2016 is being able to deliver on the company’s core business – where the earnings and cash come from – while also transforming the business to be relevant in the future. So while CEOs must maintain the core base of their revenues, they have to adapt to whatever the macro factor is that is affecting their business, including changing customer preferences, technology shifts, disintermediation, and more.

2. Futurist We have entered a world in which even the best and the brightest cannot predict the biggest things happening around us: crude oil dropping below $40, the Arab Spring, currency fluctuations, what Russia and China will do next. Even if CEOs cannot predict events and trends, the market still demands that they react immediately and opportunistically in the face of incredibly complex and surprising events – and to be prepared before they happen.

3. Tech CEO Tech pundits have been saying for at least the last 10 years that every company is a technology company – and this is now becoming a reality. Every CEO is now a ‘tech CEO,’ or at least must act like one. Whatever sector you’re in, technology is the future of your business.

4. Growth hacker Since 2008, we have been trying to respond to the world in crisis by focusing on taking out cost. But where is the growth? It’s still elusive. We have trained a huge cohort of people since 2008 to be bottom-line cost-out executives and this is the playbook everyone is still using. But what the market is now demanding is growth, which is a different skill set. Many companies are still void of high performing growth-oriented executives, and the CEO must help create a whole new growth agenda for his or her company.

5. Activist investor handler Activist investors are redefining the landscape and what it means to be a CEO and a board member. They are very smart, well read, and usually have a good perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing a company. CEOs must figure out how to best engage with them, as well as when to hold their ground on what is truly unreasonable.

6. Inspiring storyteller In a world full of data, nothing speaks to people – even investors looking at your hard numbers – more powerfully than a story. A leader who brings along stakeholders on the company’s journey is able to help define how the ‘audience’ is reading the data. Developing a compelling strategic narrative becomes the bridge from today’s reality to tomorrow’s opportunities.

7. Inclusive leadership We now have four very different generations in the workforce, and each is distinctive in terms of how they want to be led and

what they value in a leader. CEOs and their leadership teams need to be good at developing and leading high performing and inclusive teams.

8. Crisis manager As a CEO, you are going to be constantly stress-tested by events inside and outside your company, and how you respond to that stress will define you as a leader. It is important for a leader to understand their response to a stress event so they can define their leadership in a strong and powerful way rather than being run out of the company.

9. Information seeker The days of being a high performing company that is focused internally are gone, as are the days of being led by a CEO who stays too inwardly focused. The world demands a CEO who is always looking outside and bringing new insight and ideas back into the company – and challenging everything the company is doing every day.

10. Board engager The days of six easy board meetings per year are gone. Directors are working harder than ever and the issues facing companies and boards have gotten more much complex. So the CEO must develop a meaningful relationship with his or her directors and develop a trusting and transparent dialogue. The number one way a CEO gets fired is by losing control of his or her agenda, and the boardroom is typically where this happens. CEOs must be prepared for this and engage with the board at a much deeper level in this new era of board governance.

Good ideas alone aren’t enough By Jody Boshoff

A friend is now a verb and numbers serve as 1daful substitutes for words altogether. But just before you think the corporate environment is above the #trending hype, think again. We also use our share of buzzwords like one-up wonders around the boardroom table. Let’s take this one for example: creative. “He’s a creative,” we’ve heard it said. The mere sound of it puts a confident swagger in your step. Who doesn’t want to be known as that? But here is a thought. Creative is not always innovative! Creativity isn’t necessarily innovative…there’s actually a difference between the two. While invention requires creativity to come up with new things, innovation is about applying those new things in different ways. Creativity is essentially an ‘inward’ trait. It’s murkier and harder to define. Ideas within the creative realm are often judged more by their novelty than by their potential usefulness, either to consumers or to the company.

Innovation however, is ‘external’, attached to a sense of value, utility, or productivity that has been measured and tried. “Often, in common parlance, the words creativity and innovation are used interchangeably,” states Robert B Tucker, author and consultant. “They shouldn’t be, because while creativity implies coming up with ideas, ‘it’s the bringing ideas to life’ … that makes innovation the distinct undertaking it is.”

Creativity must aim for innovation It’s not enough to daydream inspiring and original ideas within our field; it’s imperative to action them. Take Velcro, for example. The concept for this prolific fastener was born under the microscope, when the Swiss electrical engineer observed a single burdock burr that had clung to pants and dog’s fur on a walk through the woods. The engineers saw how the little seed acted like a hook that attached to loops in material and hair. But because they saw value in the concept and went on to repeat it synthetically, they invented one of the most useful products in the past century. They didn’t just think up a good idea; through trial and error, adaptation and experimentation, they perforated imagination and brought the idea to life.

Innovation is not overnight The gap between creating and innovating can be wide. Even a proverbial scrum of the greatest minds can have a bad game sometimes. Aerospace engineer Adam Steltzner refers to it as the Dark Room. “There comes a moment in every creative or innovative

Without action, even the most brilliant idea is just daydreaming

Winged cupcake emojis and Donald Trump tweets are not the only ‘creative’ contributions to social media these days. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have acted as global chalkboards on which the English language has been tweaked, tinkered with and at times overhauled.

process,” he says, “when you’re not only lost, you’re not even sure where to find a map... You have to stay calm, hold on to the doubt, listen to the problem, and keep thinking of solutions, while avoiding the mind-locking panic that you won’t find a solution.” We’re often uncomfortable with staying in the problem long enough to innovate. In another case, the solution was a rather serious one. A debut of the Mars Expedition Rover mission was scheduled for departure in June 2002 and Houston had a problem. The team of rocket scientists could not figure out how to make this Rover land intact, impervious to the piercing rocks and debris on Mars’ surface. One strenuous year later, they found their answer. “There is a virtue in staying in the Dark Room until you completely surrender - not give up but completely surrender your ego, and stop trying to force the existing solution. That’s when a breakthrough occurs.” Creativity is the launching pad. But it requires innovation and sometimes teeth-gritted determination, sheer panic and a whole lot of guts to launch the mission.

Creating great ideas By Laura Baker

Have you ever heard of a new business model or invention and kicked yourself for not thinking of it first? Some ideas seem so incredibly simple you wonder how you didn’t think of it first, while others are so ingenious you wonder how anybody could’ve thought of it at all. But those great ideas don’t come on command. And that leaves a lot of would-be entrepreneurs asking the same question: How did others get inspiration to strike—and how can I work the same magic?

Engage your mind Generating a winning idea doesn’t come to you on demand while sitting at a desk twiddling your thumbs or staring at a computer. Inspiration comes from all sorts of sources and is unique to every individual. The eureka moment for some might come when their mind is engaged and hard at work, while for others it might appear out of their subconscious mind while relaxing. What’s important is discovering what gets your brain ticking over be it a passion, work or puzzles – get thinking.

Find a solution Start-up ideas are often found within a problem. Rather than accepting a problem, think about how it can be solved and find a solution to the things that frustrate and niggle at you.

BookRenter founder, Colin Barceloux, was frustrated with the high cost of textbooks, paying over $500 each quarter while at university. Two years after graduating he decided to take action and founded Bookrenter.com, a business that offers text book rentals at about a 60 percent discount.

It’s worth noting that, surprisingly, when it comes to money, people really don’t know how much things are worth. A number of businesses have made their big break by capitalising on people’s inability to accurately estimate what a fair price for an item is.

What began as a one-man operation created out of frustration now has 1.5 million users and 200 employees. “You just have to look at what frustrates you,” he says. “There’s your business idea right there.”

It isn’t the idea that matters – it’s you

Look for a new niche You don’t have to reinvent the wheel - a simple tweak might be all that is needed to hit gold. Study companies in your field of interest and ask yourself what you can do better or differently that isn’t already on offer.

Driven people will eventually succeed, not because their ideas are groundbreaking, but because of their ambitious attitude and their willingness to try and try again. The greatest factor that’ll determine success is not necessarily an idea, but it is what you decide to do with it that counts.

Quick tips:

Open at a new price point

Talk to new people - strike up conversations with people different than yourself. You never know how your view on the world can evolve without opening oneself up to new ways of thinking

Formulating a successful business doesn’t necessarily mean you have to come up with a new product or idea. Your winning idea might be something as simple as recreating an existing product already on the market, but at a different price point than currently offered.

Make sure your idea can fail fast and cheaply. No matter how passionate and confident you are about your business idea, you need to be prepared for the possibility it might not be a hit with customers. Don’t waste your time and money where there isn’t any payback.

There are customers with open wallets at every price point, from the cheap and cheerful to high-end luxury. If you identify an area that isn’t being catered to, jump on the opportunity to serve this sector of the market yourself.

Find inspiration in existing products. Just because there is already a product on the market similar to yours, doesn’t mean you can’t take it on. In most cases you can probably execute and market it better.

Do morals matter in the digital age? By Will Hackney

Both greed and morality have been poured into the foundations of capitalism’s highways, but it is greed that has eaten away at the roadside. The same voracity that once paved the birthplace of empires can later leave them coughing and choking in their own dust; empires rise and empires fall from the insatiable human appetite for more. Look no further than 2001’s Enron scandal – a stunning example of ethical transgression and financial immorality of unprecedented levels against their employees and clients alike. Their downfall also reinforced a good thing: the corporate playground still has rules. Thankfully, lawmakers, regulators and legislature have been the referee up until now; when they blow the whistle, people listen. Over hundreds of years, common and legislative laws have been honed, perfected and applied to the understood principles and modus operandi governing a capitalist society. Now, however, the rules of engagement are changing. The furious pace of technology is transforming the business landscape at unprecedented rates, and captains of industry are incontrovertibly entering unchartered waters where our lawmakers are slow to catch up. In our new digital economy, are we heading off the grid on matters of legal precedence and

ethical objectivity? What happens when we gain ‘first mover advantage’, capturing a corner of a new emergent market in disruption, but there are no rules to guide us through the choppy moral waters of commercial benefit? How do we ensure that free-market capitalism in the digital age remains morally in-check when we currently lack the navigation chart? Harvard professor Michael Porter proposes the concept of shared value as an imperative tool to steer us through the future competitive frontier. Digital infrastructure has produced work environments that cheerlead multidisciplinary, cross-sectional collaboration. Similarly - this sense of inter-connectedness leaks into the social landscape, promoting a sense of corporate social responsibility and engagement. Corporate leaders are increasingly acknowledging the fact that what’s good for their stakeholders is ultimately good for them too. Sizable companies are starting to move away from an exploitive bulldozing technique to a more inclusive, long term approach that fulfils both parties’ interests. Invariably as they seek value based solutions for their own company, there is a spin-off effect on stakeholders. The result: mutual edification and an obvious win for both sides. “Leaders of companies that are making significant progress in building large scale social enterprises, consider solving major social

problems in profitable ways to be a, if not, the, raison d’être,” say Marc Pfitzer and Valerie Bockstette, writers for the Harvard Business Review, on the matter. Paramount to the process of creating shared value is embedding a sense of social mission into corporate culture and then backing it up with quantifiable action. Sustainable and effective partnerships hang on the need for across-the-board ownership of the vision. That’s why Nestlé’s chairman, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, relentlessly hammered away for over two decades on the inextricable link between the company’s long term progress and the health of its food source agricultural communities, water resources and consumers. As of today, country managers are expected to deliver progress on these peripheral factors in their yearly business plan, alongside the profitability reports to Nestlé shareholders.

Although rule books for measuring shared value are still far off, there are profound success stories to offer road maps along the way. The new digital era admittedly is casting us into unmapped territory; traditional terms of engagement and former ethical definitions may not be enough to navigate us through the chop. But by gleaning from the emerging paradigm, one that champions cross-pollination and flattened hierarchy structures, we can inadvertently carve out new moral paths. Perhaps it’s what Sir Isaac Newton was saying after all in his second law of dynamics: “to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” – or, in other words, “there is a wake we leave behind in all we do”. What’s best for going forward is ensuring we know what we’re leaving behind.

Protecting your patch New Zealand businesses have suffered reputational damage during the last few years because of the changing needs of the news media, according to the author of a new book. The need for business leaders to understand these new requirements are the focus of Media Training for Modern Leaders. Author and media trainer, Pete Burdon says the need to respond to news media requests within minutes is often not understood. “In the old days, people either got their news from tonight’s TV news or tomorrow’s newspaper, so there was no urgency for reporter to get their stories completed,” he says. “Now, stories are often on websites and social media channels within minutes. If it’s a serious issue and you don’t get back to the reporter in time, the comment will merely say something like ‘Mr Blogs refused to comment’, which implies some sort of guilt.”

“This is often the only way of getting yourself into the story, even if it’s just saying you are aware of the situation and are doing everything to resolve it. If you don’t comment quickly in these scenarios, you look incompetent or uncaring. “Many businesses have been hit by this over recent years and are likely to be hit more if they don’t take action to protect their reputations from media scrutiny.”

Pete Burdon with Media Training for Modern Leaders. The book, plus accompanying on and offline training can be found at www.PeteBurdon.com

<

Pete Burdon, a former reporter and government press secretary, says this also means that businesses should have media statements ready to send out on serious issues before they are needed.

He says the amount of time media spokespeople have to make their points has also been cut as sound bite lengths have fallen consistently, with the average length about seven seconds. “If you don’t cut what you want to say to its absolute core and make it interesting to the reporter, you’ve got a high chance of being quoted out of context, or misquoted when the reporter tries to paraphrase. It’s important to know that if this happens, you are usually responsible, not the reporter.” www.canterburytoday.co.nz    August/September 2016 | 13

KE E PI NG B RAN DS TOP OF M I N D In today’s hyper-competitive world, successful promotion requires more than a simple letterbox drop or a television advertisement. Christchurch promotional merchandise company Bright Sparks give their clients an edge on the competition through a personalised approach to delivering products, and ultimately experiences, that leave a lasting impression. Since its conception in 1995, Bright Sparks has grown into one of New Zealand’s leading branded merchandise companies with a product range that spans across promotional merchandise, corporate gifts, and custom branded clothing. Led by director Ella Webster, they recently moved into a modern office in the Christchurch CBD, with an adjacent warehouse holding inventory ready for New Zealand-wide deliveries for the various managed merchandise programmes Bright Sparks run. Across more than 20 years developing and providing promotional merchandise, Bright Sparks have maintained a fresh, imaginative company culture that is more characteristic of a younger business. This contemporary outlook, combined with a carefully developed supply network, enables them to reliably deliver a breadth of promotional solutions that are full of purpose and creativity. With a client base including small local companies, larger corporate clients, sports teams and non-profits, the team at Bright Sparks live by the ethos that there is no request too grand or difficult. They never shy away from a challenge.

Promotional merchandise can often be hit or miss. If it fails to add value, be it aesthetic, practical or even humorous, it risks being forgotten about, often along with your brand. Ella Webster believes customisation is imperative to successful promotional merchandising. Whether it be customising your corporate gifts for individual clients, or creating custom products for an event, personalised products highlight your unique point of difference while also ensuring you stand out from the crowd. Bright Sparks create bespoke products from idea generation right through to distribution. Ella Webster maintains this goes beyond simply taking a product and adding a logo. “Our client NZ Ski needed a durable bag for customers to use on the mountain, so we worked with our supplier to create a strong, waterproof bag, that’s practical as well as eye-catching.” Ella Webster credits both her Christchurch-based team and their network of international suppliers for the company’s continued growth and success. Bright Sparks make regular trips to international suppliers in order to enhance staff product knowledge and keep them ahead of industry trends. These visits also ensure suppliers continue to uphold both ethical and quality standards.

Ella says “This global network puts Bright Sparks at the forefront of trends in the industry and enables us to bring international knowledge and experience to the New Zealand market. This offers our clients reassurance that Bright Sparks has a world class foundation on which we build our business.” Corporate social responsibility is a core part of their company culture, from supplier selection right through to community involvement. Bright Sparks are proud partners of Ronald McDonald House, which works to keep families together during difficult times. Ella and her team see this mission as immensely valuable and are more than happy to support such a worthy cause. At face value, promotional companies such as Bright Sparks connect organisations to merchandise with the aim of increasing return on investment. Beyond that is the goal of fostering customer engagement and enhancing brands in a way no other form of advertising can. By acknowledging these drivers, Bright Sparks continue to develop relationships with clients and suppliers alike to deliver products that make an impact and ultimately keep their clients’ brands top of mind.

Bright Sparks’ supply network is strengthened by membership in the World Advertising Gifts Exchange (WAGE). This global group fosters collaborative practices in the promotional merchandising industry to ensure ethical supply and reduce environmental impact.

The road By Lydia Truesdale

Standing on the starting blocks at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Sophie Pascoe won’t be thinking about the four long years she’s spent preparing for this moment, neither will she be thinking about the competitors lined up beside her, or the spectators filling the stands.

To listen to that national anthem after winning a race is a proud moment for you and your country.

The only thing on Sophie’s mind at this exact point in time will be the finish line and her chance at that prestigious gold medal. Sophie Pascoe has long had the Paralympic dream. Born in Christchurch in the early nineties and raised on a rural lifestyle block on the fringe of the city, Sophie enjoyed a typical Kiwi upbringing alongside elder sister Rebecca. Apart, perhaps, from one factor. A fateful accident with a lawnmower when she was a toddler changed her life instantaneously, resulting in her left leg being amputated below the knee and severe scarring on the back of her right leg. To this day Sophie believes it was “the best thing that ever happened to me. “I was very fortunate to have a supportive family who bought me up like my sister who is nine years older and never treated me differently,” Sophie recalls. Not to be deterred from living an adventurous and ambitious life, she began swimming at the age of seven and by the age of 10 had set herself the goal of not only representing her country, but winning a gold medal – a promise she made to her beloved Gragra (Granddad) before he passed. She’s delivered tenfold on that. She currently holds the world records for the women’s 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly. She’s ranked world number one in 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke, and world number three in 50m freestyle S10. It was as a youngster at one of her first ever meets where Paralympians Roly Crichton and Graham Condon recognised Sophie’s talents and enticed her to join the QEII Swim Club with Roly as coach. This unification was a wise move; under Roly’s guidance Sophie’s unquestionable ability emerged on the international stage. She competed in her first IPC World Championships at the tender age of 13 where she bagged a bronze medal. Then at her first Paralympics, in Beijing as a 15 year old, she came away with three gold medals, one silver, one world record and the title of youngest ever New Zealand Paralympian. Now 23 her CV reads something like this: 10 Paralympics medals, 21 IPC World Championship medals, two Commonwealth Games medals, winner of the Halberg Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award on numerous occasions, and made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009 for her services to swimming. She says there’s no secret to her success, rather a good old-fashioned approach of “process and hard work. And also keeping mentally and physically healthy and having a great support team around me.” Asked what her most memorable career highlight thus far would be, she doesn’t draw on the world titles or gold medals, nor the first time she donned the silver fern, rather, she says, it’s been making her family, friends and support team proud every time she races. “My whole team, all my supporters… everyone’s support contributes in some way towards my achievements.”

The road to Rio Heading into the 2016 Paralympic Games, Sophie feels her qualification runs went “really well” and she is peaking exactly when she needs to be. In order to gain a spot on the New Zealand team for the games, she had to achieve no lower than second place at the 2015 IPC World Championships in Glasgow. Check. She followed this up by qualifying herself an individual Paralympics spot at the 2016 NZ Championships in March. When asked whether or not she’s messed with her winning formula from the last games, it turns out the ‘don’t fix what isn’t broke’ approach is as applicable to athletes’ training programmes as it is to life itself. Sophie’s been preparing for Rio 2016 from the moment the last Paralympics ended, following the same programme as usual only with changes to the day to day regime. In quantifiable terms that’s four years, or 47.5 months, or 202 weeks, or 1,483 days of grounding. She and coach, mentor and friend of 15 years, Roly Crichton, are “like an old married couple” – or a well oiled machine, depending on which way you look at it. “We have to adapt to how my body has changed in that time and we are constantly coming up with ways to stay ahead of the competition,” she says. “Every four years we re-evaluate, but everything I’ve done leading up to this point will contribute on the day. It’s now [two months out] all about fine-tuning.” Five hours a day, six days a week, including gym workouts, massages, physiotherapy and a lot of swimming - that’s the kind of dedicated training regime it takes to become a world champion. “I don’t feel like I’ve sacrificed anything because this is exactly what I want to be doing. But I definitely took a different path to my friends who went to university and were going out most weekends while I was at home getting an early night.” Outside swimming Sophie does have other interests, namely fashion and movies. A selfconfessed “girly girl”, she studied part-time at fashion school and in 2015 was a judge for the Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes at Addington Raceway during New Zealand Cup and Show Week. She believes it’s important to have a good work/life balance in order to keep a happy athlete training, even if only to better focus on the end goal of being the best in the world. Like every sport there are challenges to overcome both along the way and within that sport, whether these are rules and regulations, drug doping or geographical, financial or logistical restrictions. In Para-Sport the biggest challenge is disability classification. Para-Swimmers are divided into 14 functional classes. Sophie is classed as S10, SB9 and SM10, which means physical

and/or motor impairments of a lesser deficiency (the greater the impairment the lower the class number).

100m backstroke, women’s 100m butterfly, and women’s 200m individual medley. Naturally she’s aiming for five out of five.

This classification procedure intends to provide a structure for “fair and equitable competition according to how much their impairment affects their ability to carry out the fundamental activates in a specific sport,” as stated on the Paralympics New Zealand website.

As far as pre-race rituals go, she’ll slip into a brand new suit, just as she does before every race final. Quite the opposite of her demeanour outside the pool, her performance in finals is formidable.

“It’s not really something that concerns me because I can’t control it anyway. I just focus on what I can control - my own performance and being the best in the world in my class.”

Let the games begin The Rio 2016 Paralympics run from September 7-18 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. International Paralympic Committee (IPC) president, Sir Philip Craven said they are expecting a record 4,350 athletes from around 170 countries to compete across 22 sports. Sir Philip also notes more broadcasters than ever before have signed up to cover the games, including a number of new territories. He is “fully confident” they will break the four billion cumulative TV audience figure for the first time, compared with the London 2012 Paralympics cumulative TV audience of 3.8 billion. Although only a small portion, a portion nonetheless of said cumulative audience will be the many Kiwis huddling under blankets, fingers clawed around hot drinks, tuned into their tellies at all hours of nightfall in a solid showing of support. Sophie has five possible chances at a gold medal in this year’s Games: in the women’s 50m freestyle, women’s 100m freestyle, women’s

“I’m looking forward to just getting out there and competing. I love it and I’ve been training so hard for so long to get there. I can’t wait for that adrenaline rush.” Sophie’s first heat will take place on September 9 with the 50m freestyle, and the support from home is duly noted. “Athletes love when we get any kind of backing or support of any kind. It would be great to know New Zealand is behind us, tuning in and watching the games. It always helps to know you have that support at home.” Despite the fact her tunnel vision is set firmly on the games, Sophie takes the time to offer advice to the budding young athletes out there: “always follow your dreams and goals. “You’ve got to do it – got to get up for the job. There are days that I hate it and days I love it. Those days (when you hate it) make you stronger. You realise if you miss a session you can’t make up for it – that’s the life of being an athlete. You’ve just got to get through those harder days and push yourself. “Once you’ve finally achieved that goal the emotional relief and space after that is unreal. “To listen to that national anthem after winning a race is a proud moment for you and your country.”

With changes to the Residential Tenancies Act having come into effect in July, it’s now more important than ever for landlords to seek the services of a professional property manager. What better place to go than the specialised branch of one of New Zealand’s largest real estate companies: Bayleys Property Management. Company directors, Lisa Iliffe and Matthew Curtis, have made it their priority to work closely with clients to ensure every property under their care complies with the new regulations, including completing audits for every property. As of July 1, landlords’ legal obligations now also include making sure all rental properties have functioning smoke alarms and meet the new requirements regarding insulation. Furthermore, tenancy agreements must now contain a compulsory statement from the landlord regarding the state of the insulation. “Our focus right now is assisting our landlords through these changes and informing them of the new housing requirements,” Lisa says. “Both home owners and potential first home buyers need to factor into their budgets getting the home’s insulation up to standard.”

Strategic partners to help grow your business It’s a quirky name, one that raises questions and creates interest. That is definitely the reaction that the directors of 2 Wild Berries, the business management specialists, are looking for. “It’s unique and fun,” explain directors Billie Watmuff and Nicki Leslie. “It’s got a bit of personality and we bring a different and individual approach to working with our business clients.” There is no doubt that Billie and Nicki are a dynamic duo with highly complementary multi-disciplinary skills to support small to medium businesses. They have an extensive work experience background, having worked in organisations from large corporates, government departments, privately owned national companies and smaller businesses.

We specialise in Security Systems for Home and Business.

These two powerhouses of business knowledge are ably supported by their office manager Wilson Rota, whose experience in administration, website design and office management ensures all customers are provided with excellent service. “Working in senior management roles during the earthquakes and also having quake-damaged homes and businesses to contend with, left us little time to consider our own well-being. After this period of high stress we made the decision

to set up on our own to gain some work/life balance and also to control our own destiny”. It is this learning that 2 Wild Berries want to pass on to their clients. They know it can be tough being an owner of a small to medium sized enterprise (SME) and it is all too easy to be so immersed in the day to day operation that the bigger picture is lost sight of. Billie and Nicki have the expertise to help clients grow their businesses, have a balanced lifestyle and to enjoy what they are doing. “From those difficult days post the earthquakes we quickly determined what was important and what wasn’t - focusing on the big picture and not sweating the small stuff. “Owners of SMEs often need assistance, but they don’t know where to access it, who to turn to, or whom they can trust. Someone might be the very best builder, plumber or electrician, but finds the raft of business level administration requirements and regulatory compliance overwhelming. “That is where we can help – and at affordable prices. We are passionate about what we do and this shows in the results we achieve for our clients.”

Owners of SMEs often need assistance, but they don’t know where to access it, who to turn to, or whom they can trust. Someone might be the very best builder, plumber or electrician, but finds the raft of business level administration requirements and regulatory compliance overwhelming.

In keeping with the cheeriness of the company’s name, Billie and Nicki run a relaxed, welcoming office where clients feel free to take their boots off at the door and to enjoy a cup of coffee. “With new health and safety legislation having come into effect this year, we have been putting a great deal of focus on helping clients to ensure their H&S document is compliant with the new regulations and working with them to implement and communicate their H&S policy effectively.” To achieve this, 2 Wild Berries visit work places to assess all site risks and hazards. They create a personalised policy and procedure manual specific to the practice of a safer working environment for each individual business. No generic material here - rather the sort of plan that can be carried around in a vehicle and referred to easily. “We take the fright out of H&S so clients really do have a greater understanding of what is required to be compliant with the current legislation. It is not sufficient to simply have a document. It’s the client’s document; it reflects their business and practices. It needs to work for them.” 2 Wild Berries’ services are comprehensive and cover the whole spectrum of business management disciplines. Especially pertinent for both Billie and Nicki however, is advising business owners about human resources and succession planning.

Keeping up to speed With its interactive characteristics, powerful search engines and seemingly infinite information, the Internet has revolutionised the way we communicate, trade, learn, consume news and do business. With most businesses – and the individuals behind them – now taking up residence in the digital world, maintaining your online presence is becoming equally as integral to your success in the physical world. Kiwi Wifi is a wireless broadband provider that evolved from the need for better broadband speeds in Marahau and Kaiteriteri areas. In summer, when thousands of holiday-makers and tourists flock to this area, the existing copper-based slow DSL services become overloaded and become mostly unusable. Operating from the belief that everyone in New Zealand should be able to access good and affordable Internet everywhere they live or work, Kiwi Wifi is continually improving the quality of broadband services available in these rural areas. A 100 percent New Zealand owned and managed wireless broadband provider, Kiwi Wifi is about providing Internet services to those in areas of the country where there is no broadband coverage, or where the existing services are slow (or unusable at times). Currently Kiwi Wifi has networks in Motueka, Riwaka, Kaiteriteri, Marahau, Linkwater, Anakiwa, Momorangi Bay, Murchison, Matiri Valley, Matakitaki Valley, Inchbonnie and Jacksons, with the company currently extending its existing network into Aniseed Valley (near Nelson) and other areas, as demand increases and resources allow. If you’re not in one of the listed coverage areas, Kiwi Wifi may be able to install a custom link to a specific location at your request. Delivered via wireless technologies, the service can reach into places neglected by the Chorus network and provides a cost effective alternative to satellite and cellular options. A Kiwi Wifi installation technician will install a wireless device on your roof, which transmits to and receives from the nearest in–range repeater. The installer will also cable this device to a wireless router inside your

Focus | The Monday Room

Alpine adventures

Where every meal is an event

A passion for New Zealand’s natural environment and lack of people compared with Europe drew nuclear physicist and internationally qualified mountaineer, Gottlieb BraunElwert, to emigrate from Germany in 1978.

Beloved Christchurch eatery The Monday Room has re-opened to the public in all its refurbished glory. New ownership has brought about a new menu, a new head chef, and a whole new concept to refined shared dining in Canterbury.

Swapping nuclear physics for high school teaching in Christchurch, Gottlieb was able to revel in the stunning alpine environment so close to the city. It was the mountains that called him deeply and along with his wife Anne, in 1981 he founded Alpine Recreation Ltd, the outdoor adventure company that is now celebrating its 35th anniversary. It wasn’t long before Lake Tekapo became the company’s base with its close proximity to the Two Thumb Range and to the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. Here Alpine Recreation was the first outdoor recreation company in New Zealand to offer ski touring using cross-country and telemark skis. In 1985 they built the Rex Simpson Hut in the Two Thumb Range to use as a base for ski touring and snowshoeing in winter and for the Tekapo Trek in summer.

With the building of a second hut – the Caroline Hut – in the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, Alpine Recreation established the Ball Pass trekking operation. Sadly Gottlieb died suddenly in 2008 while guiding a group, including then Prime Minister Helen Clark. His legacy lives on in Alpine Recreation. Anne Braun-Elwert continues to run the company supported by a loyal team of guides and by family, including daughter Elke, assistant director. The summer season is approaching and Alpine Recreation’s guides are preparing to provide the influx of visitors with personal service and custom alpine adventures. “Our chief guide, Paul Aubrey is IFMGA qualified and he’s been with us for some five years. Paul is ably assisted by Gernot Lachmaier, an IFMGA mountain and ski guide from Austria who comes to Alpine Recreation each summer, and there are also a number of NZMGA (NZ Mountain Guides Association) qualified guides on the team. Besides these adventures in the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, Alpine Recreation has treks in the Two Thumb Range during summer. The Tekapo Trek is 2-3 days of remote highland trekking above Lake Tekapo, staying at the Rex Simpson Hut and offering great star-gazing opportunities. Alpine Recreation provides equipment free of charge to ensure clients have the right kit and to take the hassle out of travelling. Many of Alpine Recreation’s clients return year after year for a new mountain challenge.

As well as trekking, Alpine Recreation offers a range of climbing instruction courses from their Caroline Hut with walk-in access. Low client–guide ratios allow the certified mountain guides to tailor trips exactly to clients’ skills and experience to help them progress even further. Joel Christian purchased The Monday Room in December 2015 with a clear vision in mind of the flavours and feel he wanted to introduce to Christchurch’s culinary market. He’s been involved with hospitality since leaving high school – first as a chef before transitioning to front of house and managerial duties – and he’s stoked with how his synthesis of social dining and modern cuisine has come to life. “It’s definitely a premium offering... It’s a really sophisticated environment, a cool date spot for young couples,” Joel says. “The menu is quite different and doesn’t work as a normal menu does. We’re trying to bring something different to dining in Christchurch. “We’re playing around with the social dining concept of sharing food, but not like tapas and small plates, rather home cooked food, big portions of protein and sides of vegetables for the centre of the table. “It’s a menu of fresh dishes that gives people a reason to come back again.” The flavour fusions can be described as modern European with hints of ingredients from Middle Eastern and other cuisines. On the menu right now you’ll find dishes like goats cheese churro with curd and truffle honey; beef tartare with pickled vegetables and baba ganoush; confit Dutch carrots; ginger beer beef rib; and vegan peanut butter pie, to name but a few.

It’s an all-day menu at the 40 seat restaurant but their two speciality offerings are brunch and dessert. Every dish has been created to deliver the utmost in flavour, texture and presentation. The dishes typically come in three sizes: small (entrées), medium (sides), and large (mains). Joel intends to change the menu every two months to appease the adventurous appetites of local and visiting culinary connoisseurs alike. Focus | Methven Pubs

The heart of Methven beats on Christchurch’s infrastructure was reduced to a mere shadow of its former glory following the seismic events of 2010 and 2011. Adding insult to infrastructural injury was the fact that this damage was not confined to the city’s core, but stretches far and wide across the greater Canterbury region. Much like Christchurch city itself, for our southern sister Methven – just an hour away from the city – it was the heritage buildings which bore the brunt of Mother Nature’s wrath. As you pull into Methven and stand at the cross roads of the two main streets, you’ll see two such buildings – pubs on opposite corners. One of them is blue, the other is brown.

The Blue Pub was engulfed in flames and only four years later The Brown Pub suffered the same fate. Decades later the September earthquakes damaged both venues, resulting in an insurance claim of more than $1million, which the insurance company duly granted. Unfortunately, said insurer could not handle the influx of claims resulting from further earthquakes and went into liquidation after the February earthquakes. The Blue and Brown Pubs were left damaged with no insurance money to complete the necessary repairs.

restoration and design firm, Era Design, with owner Arlene Bair working with owners Trev and Deb to create a warm and inviting country pub. “The Brown Pub is one of the most beautiful traditional buildings in Methven and still retains many of its architectural features, so it was great for Era to work with Trev, Deb and the team on the restaurant re-design,” Arlene says.

The Brown Pub’s heritage bones were put to the test during the quakes and later required significant earthquake engineering to bring it up to code. Once construction was completed, the pub’s accommodation had a complete facelift including carpet, paint, bedding and all new family friendly rooms.

“The aim was to capture the spirit of the true country pub, so we’ve pulled in warm welcoming colours, patterns and textures, and accessorised with traditional agricultural and equestrian pieces.”

Now it’s the Brown Pub’s restaurant – Fireside Bar and Family Restaurant – that’s getting its share of the renovation limelight.

But in true Cantabrian spirit – and in testament to their determined owners – they are still standing against all odds and are today stronger, safer and now better looking than ever before.

The Blue Pub and The Brown Pub are two iconic, The Fireside Bar and Family Restaurant’s historic buildings with intriguing pasts. In 1918 interior design was handled by Methven

The outdoor area has also been extensively redesigned, with new tables, chairs, landscaping and a children’s play area to bring the space in-line with the family friendly vibe the restaurant and accommodation has become renowned for through its ‘children eat and stay for free at the Brown Pub’ promotion.

The renovated pubs are part of the fabric of Methven and have been for more than a century. The modern interiors contrast beautifully with the traditional exteriors which provide the droves of visitors with a glimpse into of the intriguing history of both establishments. Deb Taylor and Dave Den Baars (Trev) became business partners more than three years ago, bringing the Blue and the Brown Pubs together under a new brand – The Methven Pubs, with the new and improved pubs standing proudly again as testament to their hard work and determination. Focus | Skytec Engineering Consultants

Engineering long term resilience Skytec Engineering Consultants are involved in developing the technology that helps reduce the impact of natural hazards and disasters. Earthquakes, storms, flooding and tsunamis are seldom cheap exercises, which is why being better prepared is a cornerstone of Skytec’s work. A boutique engineering consultancy practice made up of skilled and experienced engineers and advisers, Skytec specialises in looking at how to use various engineering techniques to reduce risk early in the process, to help owners get to know their buildings better, as well as to prepare for seismic strengthening. As part of this risk reduction Skytec offers a unique programme known as Build-Sure through which they carry out Detailed Seismic Assessments (DSAs) and Detailed Engineering Evaluations (DEEs) for a broad range of stock including commercial, residential and heritage buildings. “It is the depth and thoroughness of our investigations which enable us to formulate cost-effective and appropriate repair or strengthening methodologies,” says Bernard Toh, director of Skytec. “We are committed to finding and implementing best practice, in terms of engineering techniques and their application, to achieve long-term

resilience for both built assets and for communities.” Skytec’s particular approach has been recognised by a range of different clients from central and local government to private building and land owners. Consequently the company has been involved in prestigious projects such as the seismic design of defence buildings at Ohakea Airbase and seismic strengthening of the Wellington Town Hall - a Category 1 Historic Place. Currently Skytec is working on advising owners about the repair and strengthening of heritage buildings in Christchurch, such as Antonio Hall and the Woods Mill Complex - a four level former flour mill constructed in bricks. Both of these buildings are Category 2 Historic Places. “We understand the importance of heritage to communities. For these types of buildings we have created a sub-set of our Build-Sure methodology, known in this instance as Heritage–Sure. This includes specialist advice

and engineering services (testing, structural and geotechnical investigations) to support the retention of heritage buildings. “From this scientific and detailed approach, realistic strengthening concepts and cost estimates may be made. It is the investigation that informs cost effective design.” Skytec can also carry out feasibility studies for projects. “Carrying out a building feasibility study prior to a project commencing

provides a prudent investor with more confidence against risks.” The company also has the in-house capacity to design retaining walls for projects ranging from civil infrastructure to residential situations with complicated ground conditions. “We carry out slope drilling and testing to assess the ground conditions for each circumstance. From this we can recommend appropriate design or repair strategies.” CT

Focus | Cholmondeley Children's Centre

Respite, relief and resilience Understanding Cholmondeley Children’s Centre Anthony was just five years old when his mother, pregnant with her second child, found herself in urgent need of support. It was a difficult pregnancy, says Anthony’s mother. “I was house-bound and vomiting all day. It was really bad and it was affecting Anthony.” As a single parent with no family in Christchurch, nor any friends who could step in to offer help, Anthony’s mother was concerned about what would happen should she suddenly be admitted to hospital: “I needed something for Anthony. So I went to my doctor and asked if there was any respite care or anything — any kind of help for him — and they suggested Cholmondeley.” After that, Anthony’s mother says the family’s continued involvement with Cholmondeley grew naturally; from what started as an urgent need in an emergency situation, became regular planned stays for both of her children which are benefitting the family enormously.

“It took me a while because... I felt for a long time that I was a failure. Even though I knew that Anthony enjoyed it and he was proud when he talked about it... but now... if people ask where my kids are going it’s like, ‘Oh they’re going to Cholmondeley — it’s great!’” Anthony and Ethan’s mother says being able to visit Cholmondeley before Anthony’s first stay helped alleviate some of her initial fears, but in the end it was Anthony’s positive response to his time there that convinced her Cholmondeley was right for her family.

For much of his childhood, Anthony was dealing with undiagnosed ADHD. He had been labelled as naughty at school and was struggling to form relationships with his peers. She hoped Cholmondeley might support him to make friends with other children, and possibly find a mentor in an adult other than herself. Cholmondeley programme supervisor, Johno Harris, is one member of the Cholmondeley team who has developed a particularly strong relationship with Anthony. Johno says that, while developing a sense of relationship with an organisation might be unusual, this is a key focus for Cholmondeley.

Ethan gets creative

“It goes beyond what anybody might be paid to do... families tell us that they really genuinely feel that people are there for them... that you matter and that what happens to you and your children matters,” Johno says. Cholmondeley is also providing experiences the boys’ mother doubts she could have provided on her own. “It’s just been me for so long and I think Anthony felt really quite lonely.” She’s also seen how Cholmondeley has drawn out Anthony’s strengths, and watched his resilience grow. “He’s learnt that nothing is impossible for him. I think Cholmondeley has a lot to do with that.” Johno explains that at Cholmondeley each child’s strengths are recognised, celebrated, and developed.

Anthony tackles the obstacle course

<

“Anthony made the decision for me. To be perfectly honest I had only heard about Cholmondeley like, almost as an orphanage... that’s the perception I had because everyone had told me it was a place for unwanted children or uncared for children.”

Relieved that her son was happy at Cholmondeley, Anthony’s mother allowed herself to hope that perhaps the service could provide more than just respite care.

<

Anthony is now 11 and his younger brother, Ethan, is five. They both love Cholmondeley, and proudly share the experiences they have there with friends and other people in their lives. Their mother has also recommended Cholmondeley to others and says that, even though in the beginning Cholmondeley felt like a “last resort” she has no regrets about sending her children there.

She even offered to retrieve her son immediately if he wasn’t happy. “So I said to Anthony, ‘You go, but if you want to come home, tell me and I’ll come get you!’ but he said, ‘No Mum, I really love it.’”

Focus | Cholmondeley Children's Centre

Ethan’s just not fitting in very well at school, because he’s got learning difficulties and he’s got behavioural issues. Whereas at Cholmondeley, I think he feels like he fits in. Cholmondeley definitely has a calming effect on him.

- ETHANS'S MOTHER

In Anthony’s case, much of this has been done through his work with the centre’s collection of bicycles. Anthony sets up the bicycles for excursions, helps maintain and repair them, and represented Cholmondeley during a pick-up of several bikes donated to the centre and these experiences provide Anthony with a real sense of accomplishment, Johno says. The bikes also show Anthony is thinking more “outside of himself,” Johno adds. “One of the messages we use with children all the time is that ‘Yes, we are all different, but all of us have a right to feel safe, we all have a right to have fun’... and that’s the kind of thing also I think we

hear from Anthony when he’s saying, ‘these bikes should be available for everybody.’” Anthony has also been instrumental in helping his brother Ethan find his way at Cholmondeley. “Ethan’s just not fitting in very well at school, because he’s got learning difficulties and he’s got behavioural issues. Whereas at Cholmondeley, I think he feels like he fits in,” says Ethan’s mother. “Cholmondeley definitely has a calming effect on him.”

As for the whole family, everyone appreciates each other more. The boys continue to grow in confidence with each stay, and their mother feels assured that they are always safe and having fun at Cholmondeley. She also admits the boys have helped her let go of some of her misconceptions, and now avidly encourages others to seek help if they need it: “Everybody has their own story,” she says. “Asking for help...is not a bad thing.”

Johno has observed that Ethan has different needs to his brother, but Cholmondeley can be “whatever Ethan needs,” he says.

Property & Constrution | Brownie Homes

Covering all your building bases Brownie Homes Limited in Christchurch has the experience and skills to meet all your building needs, whether you’re building your brand new dream home, or improving the one you’ve already got.

The company was established in 2010 by owner James Brownie, a qualified builder with valuable experience in quantity surveying and project management.

Wide range of building services Brownie Homes offers a full range of residential construction services, including new builds, renovations, earthquake repairs and landscaping. It also completes light commercial projects to the highest possible standard. “We mainly do mid to high-end homes, but we also build homes for people on a tighter budget. We’re a one stop shop,” James says. “We also relocate homes and currently have two relocations on the go. I’ve shifted a house from Christchurch to Cromwell; it was a long way but it went very well.”

Building high quality homes Brownie Homes is serious about delivering quality homes and services at competitive prices. Building to a high standard is of utmost importance to the small team, who would rather spend a bit more time getting everything right the first time, than go back and redo it later. The company is a member of the Registered Master Builders’ Association and won a bronze award in the 2014 House of the Year Awards.

Client testimonial: “I used Brownie Homes as they were referred to me as being very well organised and able to do excellent work at short notice. I found that to be the case, with difficult renovation work completed to a high standard and well within the timeframe. They have the support of excellent subcontractors, which makes the job go seamless and no down time. The team are young and energetic as well as being excellent tradesmen. The site is always left clean and tidy as it is clear they take pride in their job. I would recommend Brownie Homes without question.” - Rohan Wills, Christchurch

Brownie Homes is also currently undertaking a large earthquake repair on Mt Pleasant Road, and the earthquake strengthening and fitout of an existing commercial building in Wairakei Road.

Property & Construction | Chapman Developments

With you every step of the way Chapman Developments is well known in and around Papanui for building high quality, affordable homes. The Christchurch company has built dozens of homes in the Papanui/Northlands area and has developed a reputation for being an easy business to deal with.

A history of quality construction Chapman Developments Limited is owned by Dion Chapman, a trade-qualified builder with 30 plus years’ experience in the Canterbury construction industry. Dion has always been ambitious and innovative. Two years after completing his apprenticeship in 1987 he went into business for himself, establishing DJ Builders.

We just have a good product at the end of the day. We stand by our product and have good finishing. - DION CHAPMAN, OWNER

Today Chapman Developments focuses on offering a complete residential building service, with an emphasis on purchasing properties and developing houses to sell. It can build for as little as $1,499 per square metre.

“It’s good to get into those new subdivisions and build for someone, but I prefer doing the spec homes. We’ve built about 30 homes around Papanui and we’ve got a good name; people approach us off the street and we have some clients that we’ve done a straight swap for – an old house on a big section for a new house.”

“We concentrate mainly on new builds; that’s what we like to do,” Dion says. “Building spec houses is what we focus on. At present we are completing a project in Proctor Street with four stand-alone houses going on the market now.”

Clients building with Chapman Developments, or buying off the plans, work with Dion’s wife Karina, a trained colour consultant who helps them choose their interior colours, features and decorating.

Chapman Developments is well known around Papanui for its spec houses, which are in strong demand and are usually sold off the plans, often without the need for marketing from a real estate agent.

It is a family business, with both of Dion’s sons actively involved in the company. One of them completed his trade qualifications with the business.

A trusted construction team Chapman Developments offers the highest standard of workmanship and business practices on every job, offering great peace of mind to clients. Dion personally works on every client’s job, from the planning stage to completion, and prides himself on providing a personal service. He is on the tools most days, actively supervising the progress of every job.

“We believe in keeping it small and keeping it simple, which means lower overheads and one on one service with each client. All emails come to my phone and when clients come onsite they meet me directly. When it becomes a building issue it’s my side of things, but when it comes to picking interior features, they deal with Karina.”

“I make sure things are going smoothly when I’m on site and if there’s a problem I sort it out then and there,” he says.

Chapman Developments employs a small team of its own builders and works with a group of experienced and professional sub-tradesmen.

A beautiful new home by Chapman Developments

“I’ve worked with some of our subbies for 20 years. I trust them and they’re good quality workers, and with me being on site I can sort out any problems early,” Dion says. “Quality is a big thing and I have a lot of input into quality control. We’re not here to knock out a whole lot of houses and get a whole lot of clients. We’re just looking at having a few houses the go each year and putting out a good product. We have over 30 years’ experience and a lot of people say I’m pretty easy to deal with.” Chapman Developments also works with a private designer who creates unique and innovative home designs. “I’ve been working with him since about 2002 and we’ve had feedback

from people about how well his homes are designed for their section. “We just have a good product at the end of the day. We stand by our product and have good finishing.” CT Chapman Developments Limited 64 Mary Street Papanui Christchurch T (03) 354 6262 M 0274 389 440 E dknj@xtra.co.nz www.chapmandevelopments.co.nz

Property & Construction | Genius Homes

A smart and simple way to build With housing development lagging behind the city’s rapidly growing population, demand is quickly outstripping supply. We need more, better houses — and fast. From factory built to modular designs, prefabrication is cutting build times and costs. Manufactured using cutting-edge technology, prefabricated buildings have earned a global reputation for affordable homes which are both stylish and unique. Cantabrians can now experience the beauty of prefab buildings for themselves with Timaru company Genius Homes’ range of creative and practical housing solutions offering an innovative alternative to the traditional method of building, whatever your site conditions. Genius Homes also has a range of designs for commercial purposes, with the company recently building self-contained cabins for tourists at Pinewood Lodge in Queenstown and Vineyard accommodation cottages for Weaver Estate Winery. Choosing prefabricated buildings for commercial applications can be very beneficial with less activity on your site because all the building is done in a factory. This means less interruption to your business, reduced health and safety risks on your site and faster completion times.

Genius Homes has also been involved in the design and build of offices and classrooms, with a custom design service ensuring the company can create the perfect office space for your business and a full project management service, leaving customers to get on with running their business or school. The company’s unique construction process eliminates the stress and hassle of building for its customers, with the diverse range of quality residential and commercial buildings built in Timaru, before being transported to sites throughout the South Island. By eliminating the need for the client to follow up on tradesmen and by taking care of all the consents and submitting the necessary documents, building with Genius Homes couldn’t be easier. The in-house architectural designer can design the building from scratch to meet the requirements of the site and homeowners, or customers can refer to Genius Homes’ large range of standard plans.

A local name you can trust

Brandon Taw of Taw Builders Limited is on a mission to become the most trusted local builder in Canterbury. The Genius Home service includes free onsite consultations and advice, building consents, planning and construction, kitchen and bathroom fit-out, floor coverings, painting and finishing, electrical fittings and site preparations, transport, installation and plumbing connections, with the company going over every detail of a new home build with its customers carefully before construction starts. Onsite Genius Homes organises the site works for new and existing building sites and once the dwelling is delivered, it takes from five to 20 days to install and connect services before it is ready to move in, compared with three to four months onsite with a conventionally built house. Aside from the competitive build times that come with keeping production in-house, Genius Homes are constructed to ensure longevity and consistent high quality. The sub-floor is constructed with steel, making it very robust and easier to transport as, unlike wood, it will not warp or bend. The walls are constructed from standard timber framing which can be clad with a

range of options to suit the customer’s taste or the setting. Insulation and comfort are also given a high priority, with double glazing and premium insulation fitted in the ceiling and walls, and a 40mm polystyrene insulation under floor. Building runs in Brandon’s blood. His father established Taw Construction more than 35 years ago and Brandon fondly remembers spending his weekends and holidays on construction sites gaining early insight into the building world. It was only natural that Brandon would follow in the family’s footsteps and he completed his apprenticeship through the family business. When it came time for his father to retire, Brandon happily and seamlessly assumed the business and all its employees. He had a vision to slingshot Taw Construction into the modern market and rebranded it as Taw Builders to reflect this. Now with a larger team of seven – and pushing to get bigger as demand and growth allows – Taw Builders has a reputation for having some of the most reliable tradesmen in Canterbury, turning up when they say they will and exceeding clients’ expectations when it comes to the calibre of work they leave behind.

Taw Builders at a glance: • Full spectrum of building capabilities • Specialising in new residential builds • Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs) • Certified members of NZCB • Servicing the wider Canterbury area .

They’ve completed a range of unique projects including the children’s playground at Orana Park. In fact they are one of the preferred contractors for playground installations across Christchurch. Property & Construction | Swish Builders

Delivering dream homes Ten years is a milestone worth celebrating for any company, but for local firm Swish Builders it’s a natural evolution resulting from doing a job and doing it well. A carpenter for almost 20 years, director Willy Thomson completed his apprenticeship locally before heading off overseas to get a broad depth of construction experience. “Towards the end of that time, all I wanted to do was come back to New Zealand and start building architectural homes,” he says. “That became my focus and we started the company 10 years ago, getting our first break building a fairly large architecturally designed house at the top of Mt Pleasant.” With a continued focus on high-end residential housing, Swish Builders specialises in complex hill sites, with the team’s well honed ability to complete interesting new builds that present a challenge in terms of their design and unique architectural features. “When we started out the ambition was always to build high-end architectural houses,” Willy explains. When the earthquakes hit, our focus did shift to earthquake repairs as required however, those repairs were mainly large scale, complex projects that required a high level of expertise and skill. As those projects have been completed, our focus has shifted back to architectural homes.” The company also carries out renovations, extensions and maintenance. “Over the last 10 years we have developed a true understanding of what it means to

The goal is to develop into being one of the top architectural builders in Christchurch, capable of delivering high-end houses that are technically challenging, through operational excellence and positive client outcomes.

be an architectural builder and we understand the degree of difficulty involved in high-end housing.” This commitment to excellence has seen the company become involved in the superhome movement – a local move to revolutionise the way Kiwis look at housing by helping people build warm, dry, healthy, energy efficient and environmentally sound homes. >

Each construction team is led by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) qualified foreman, qualified carpenters and apprentices also play an integral role in the company. “We really value having apprentices learning on the site and we enjoy teaching and developing them,” he says. “We have good staff loyalty and our staff take absolute pride in their work. We also want to thank our subcontractors for their support over the years. Many of them are the same subcontractors we’ve been using since the very beginning and we’ve developed excellent relationships with them. “These strong relationships ensure we have an understanding of how to work with those subcontractors, what they require, how to meet their expectations and to be able to work well with them. “We’re also getting better and better,” he says. “Every home we build, we’re constantly learning and evolving, discovering new materials, new techniques, new systems and processes. In 10 years we’ve grown from a small company and, although we’ve remained a good size to ensure we can maintain control, we are consistently pushing to be better than we were.” The company’s success is the result of the individual and collective expertise and professionalism of the team, inclusive ongoing communication with clients, dedication and commitment to excellence – no matter the size and challenge of the build, Willy says, and that’s something he plans to continue for the many years ahead. “The goal is to develop into being one of the top architectural builders in Christchurch, capable of delivering high-end houses that are technically challenging, through operational excellence and positive client outcomes.” CT Swish Builders T (03) 384 9980 M 021 618 568 E willy@swishbuilders.co.nz www.swishbuilders.co.nz — Advertising Feature

Property & Construction | Breens Contracting

The complete range of site services Breens Contracting Limited can take care of your entire demolition, waste removal and site excavation right up to the pouring of your new house or commercial concrete slab.

Breens Contracting profiles a range of demolition and excavation services, including: • House removal • House demolition • Asbestos/contaminated waste removal • Salvage • Foundations

While many people only see the completed new home, the experienced team at Breens recognises the huge amount of work that goes into preparing the site for construction.

• Rock excavation

The business is owned by Darrell Breen, who heads a small team of experienced operators who rise to the challenge of completing the most challenging jobs to the highest standards.

• Concrete swimming pool removal

Business manager, Angie Muir says Breens offers a complete house demolition and waste removal service, including the removal and disposal of asbestos contaminated waste and contaminated concrete and soil. “Contaminated waste removal has been a big thing since the earthquakes,” she says. “We offer a full service, having registered COC holders to manage the site under the strict guidelines, to ensure the waste is removed correctly and safely for staff and neighbouring properties.” Breens Contracting also disposes of contaminated soil from HAIL sites (Hazardous Activities Industries List). These sites were formerly horticultural or dump sites which have been identified years down the track. “When houses on these sites have been removed the land has to be investigated

to ascertain the levels of any possible contamination,” Angie says.

Breens Contracting’s new name

Ribraft foundations

Breens Contracting Limited has recently changed its name to better reflect its comprehensive range of site works.

Breens Contracting also specialises in ground remediation for new foundation work, including ribraft foundations, which are commonly used in Christchurch since the earthquakes. Ribraft is an innovative foundation system that makes it a seismically strong foundation. “Instead of a traditional 3604 ring foundation, the engineer designs the gravel raft to suit each property,” she says. “It requires the entire footprint and an overcut to be excavated to a particular depth, then back filled in layers of gravel and compacted. Quite often these rafts are reinforced with geo-grid to make them even stronger. In the event of an earthquake, the house would be supported by the gravel raft.”

Business manager Angie Muir says up until recently the company was known as Breens Demolition, which was appropriate for much of its post-earthquake works. However, the decision was made to change the name to Breens Contracting to show customers it offers a wide range of excavation and site services, as well as demolition. CT

“We are an innovative business – this expression sums us up straight away. When clients ring us with tricky jobs we take them. We are not just a building company – we are really strong on the design aspect and are very solutions orientated.”

From then to now When original founder David Clark established Clark Construction he may not have anticipated the true potential of his enterprise. Having been a structural engineer in the Christchurch market for some time, he ventured out on his own in pursuit of autonomy and the opportunity to meet demands for pre-cast and general building work.

“For the future, we do not want to lose this focus or our quality workmanship. We all strive for this. We want to remain the size we are, so we can retain our personalised service and continue to interact with clients on a one on one basis,” Aaron says. “Our five year plan is to build on what we already have and to keep adding to our expertise areas.”

Clark Construction has retained this modus operandi throughout the years, but it has significantly diversified since inception to accommodate evolving needs and preferences in the market. Today, David Clark no longer leads the company, although his strength, determination and ingenuity are still at the heart of the operation.

“We like our staff to not be too fixated on construction alone – we pride ourselves on the fact that our staff are all-rounders who don’t shy away from a challenge. We look for people who want to have a go and diversify their skills through exposure to both residential and commercial work.

All of Clark Construction’s environmental policies are about establishing and maintaining the highest standards. “We ensure all of our staff are well versed and instructed when it comes to environment policies, compliancy, obligations and best practise. We also put a lot of focus into minimising waste – not using what we don’t need.

Property & Construction | Geeves Scaffolding

Scaffolding solutions tailored to suit your needs

But with Geeves Scaffolding, you can be assured your scaffolding will be erected and removed on time, and will be of the highest quality to ensure easy access and the safety of everyone on site.

Geeves Scaffolding was formed six years ago in Wellington and today operates in both Christchurch and Timaru. The company undertakes jobs of all sizes, from single house constructions to large projects such as the Charles Upham Retirement Village in Rangiora and ongoing work for national clients such as Fonterra.

Providing a personal service Owned by Clinton Geeves, Tim Geeves and Andy Robertshawe, Geeves Scaffolding provides competitive pricing and goes out of its way to provide a high level of personal service to all clients.

Geeves Scaffolding is a family business focused on offering the best service to customers

<

Scaffolding is a critical part of most construction jobs, and if not done correctly or on time, can cause big delays and cost blowouts for builders.

“We put a lot of focus on customer service – being easy to deal with, delivering what we say we’re going to deliver, and turning up when we say we’re going to,” Clinton says. "We see ourselves as part of the builder’s team on each job and work hard to build scaffolding that will make our client’s job easier.”

Geeves Scaffolding is a real family business. Aside from Geeves brothers Clinton and Tim, their Timaru branch is run by Paul and Karen Summerill and they have strong family connections in their Christchurch branch. “Our guys take a lot of pride in their work and the service they offer. I think the strong family connections in our company really contribute to this.” Geeves Scaffolding also uses the Layher scaffolding system, which is designed and made in Germany. “Layher is very fast to erect and dismantle and works well in every environment. It allows our crews to be very efficient on site while maintaining high levels of safety and usability – meaning we can provide competitive pricing and very cost effective access solutions to all clients.” While it has only been operating in Timaru for a year, the business is experiencing strong growth in the region. Clinton says employing the right scaffolding company can make all the difference.

<

Geeves provided all the scaffolding for Ryman Healthcare’s Charles Upham Retirement Village in Rangiora

“If your scaffolder is not performing it causes problems for every trade on site and costs time and money. Geeves Scaffolding will work with you to ensure your project runs smoothly and on time.”

Michael has an abundance of qualifications which include: Foundation Degree (FdSc) Arboriculture, Higher National Certificate (HNC) Urban Forestry, European Tree Worker Certificate, International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist & Tree Climber specialist, and Quantifiable Tree Risk Assessor. Michael has also worked in Norway, Ireland and Australia, as well as in New Zealand and he knows how to look after a great diversity of trees. Moving to live in Christchurch in October 2011 might have been considered by some people as a bit risky, but Michael doesn’t shy away from challenges. In fact he has won the South Island tree climbing championships four years in a row and continues to represent Christchurch competing at an international level. Michael says he is focused on solutions. “I like to talk to customers and listen to what they want, so that between us we can come up with the best course of action which meets the needs of both the client and the trees. “We are based in Christchurch but cover a wide area including Banks Peninsula, Waimakariri and Selwyn districts. I’m always on site; if it’s not me doing the work on the tree I’ll still be there supervising and making sure there are no problems,” he says. Alba Tree services cater for all your tree care needs and offer free advice and written estimates for both the domestic and commercial market place. They undertake all aspects of tree care, using the latest techniques and equipment to carry out high quality tree work for their clients, large and small.

Tips for choosing an arborist • Get more than one quote unless you know and are comfortable with the arborist • Don’t always accept the lowest bid – it pays to check credentials • Be wary of cold calling individuals and those who go door to door offering bargains for performing tree work. Most reputable companies are usually too busy to solicit work in this manner. When it comes to tree work, it is a good idea to hire a professional. Michael and his team have the skill, qualifications and experience to get the job done safely and efficiently. Property & Construction | M O Brown Builders

Building properties of desire While local firm M O Brown Builders has found success in the local construction market by building quality homes, it’s the company’s ability to build strong relationships that sets it apart in a crowded marketplace. “It is an extremely competitive market,” M O Brown Builders director Mike Brown says. “There are a lot of excellent builders in Christchurch. There’s also a lot of new companies in town, a lot that have grown beyond their control, that have come in with a hiss and a roar, but have disappeared just as fast. “We’re a long standing business with a solid grounding which is really our point of difference. Our clients appreciate being able to trust a long standing, respected company.” This personalised attention to detail is illustrated by much of the company’s workload coming via word of mouth referrals and repeat business. A current project is a multi-level architectural build on a steep site in the latest stage of the Westmorland Heights subdivision, at the southern stretch of the city. “We have completed four projects for a previous client, who we are now building for her sister,” Mike says. “We met with the client at Westmorland Heights when the sections were first released, and selected a section from two options. We knew what style of home they were after, so we engaged an architect we had worked with previously to organise the design.

We’re a long standing business with a solid grounding which is really our point of difference. Our clients appreciate being able to trust a long standing, respected company. - MIKE BROWN, DIRECTOR

“The home is currently being clad, so the project is going well and it will be a stunning home when it’s finished.” It’s not just architectural builds this talented team turns its commercial hand to. “We’re very versatile in what we do,” Mike says. “We do mid to high end builds, smaller homes for the first-home buyer, as well as alterations and extensions, and some small commercial fit outs.”

Once we start a project, we’re committed to that project. It’s easy to start a project, but it takes time and dedication to finish. - MIKE BROWN, DIRECTOR

“No matter what the project is, quality is still the highest priority for us.” Slow and steady wins the race, Mike says, with the company maintaining a strong base of 14, consciously remaining at a manageable size, not over committing to work to ensure that every project is given the time and commitment required.

M O Brown Builders has recently been engaged on an alteration/extension in Moncks Spur, the result of a referral from a neighbouring property who had their earthquake rebuild carried out by the firm. The company was also involved in the commercial fit-out of White House Black Café – a two storey, 1880s homestead on Halswell Road. “This was a 15 month transformation, from the original homestead manor into what is now a contemporary café,” Mike says.

the company doesn’t see the peaks and troughs often seen in the construction industry. “It’s been business as usual for us throughout the earthquake repair programme; we’ve had some good projects that we’ve completed and good jobs coming up, so there’s a good positive workflow there. Of that workload, there are 60 percent of rebuilds and 40 percent nonearthquake related.”

“We’re just about to start another sizeable project for the same client in Christchurch, which will be the third project we have completed for him, which started with his high end architectural home on the hill.”

When it comes to earthquake rebuilds, Mike says many of the homeowners aren’t building by choice, but rather by necessity and, as a result, the company makes it their focus to ensure the client understands what they’re getting and knows the systems and what to expect.

The company has enjoyed strong referral rates which have carried the business through, where others have had to rely on earthquake repairs to tie them over between projects. It also means

“It’s about building a relationship with the client, which has always been our key focus, as opposed to pumping out as many numbers as we can.

Even the staff are solid and consistent – with the long term team members ranging from as many as 14 years with the company and averaging at about 7-8. Many of the sub trades and suppliers are those who have been with the company since the early years, which Mike says ensures the company can control quality.

“We’re committed to finishing in a timely manner, we get regular comments on how smoothly and efficiently our projects run through to completion, because they don’t stall for long periods of time as a result of over-committing.

“Once we start a project, we’re committed to that project. It’s easy to start a project, but it takes time and dedication to finish.” This consistency flows through all facets of the business and is the very reason Mike has no plans to expand. “We’re happy to continue delivering good quality homes and projects and creating happy clients at the end of it. That’s what our focus is now and has always been.“>

Changing the face of any interior M F Turnbull makes joinery shine - that’s because it services the joinery and furniture trades as specialist finishers of spray applied coatings – paints, clears and stains. “We can spray finish virtually anything – from the front door to the back door and everything in between,” says Murray Turnbull, who along with his wife Monique set up the business in 1988. Achieving the very best finishing solution possible for a job has been the key to M F Turnbull’s success and anything less is simply not good enough. “We can produce the very best because we have the latest in prep bays and bake ovens. We imported our first bake oven from Italy 15 years ago to enable us to specialise in super high gloss finishes. Now we have three bake ovens and this means we get higher quality finishes in a shorter space of time. Because we operate in a controlled environment our work is far less affected by temperature and moisture.” During their years in business M F Turnbull’s team has worked with interior designers, kitchen designers, architects, joiners, furniture

manufacturers and members of the public to turn their dreams of beautiful joinery into reality. “If you can dream it we can create it, whether it’s for a residential, commercial or office environment. The range of possible finishes is endless and we really enjoy being creative and innovative. “Many of our team have been with us for a long time and they have a huge amount of experience to advise and guide our clients to achieve the result they’ve been imagining. We still have clients who first came to us when we started the business. They know we will deliver for them.” There is a wide range of applications for M F Turnbull’s expertise. If a kitchen is looking a bit dated, repainting or recoating the cabinet doors will bring the room right up to date with fresh new colour. Dining and bedroom suites, coffee tables, wall units, vanities and wardrobe doors can be spray finished and revitalised making the old new again. M F Turnbull Services • Staining, painting, marbling, lacquering, texture coatings • Resurfacing • Kitchen refurbishment • Bathroom surfaces • Furniture restoration and renovation.

M F Turnbull is nothing if not versatile. They also specialise in furniture restoration and renovation. Pieces that have gone out of fashion can be revamped and updated. Gail Rissman is just one of M F Turnbull’s very satisfied customers who, during the course of 25 years has had many pieces of furniture refurbished by the company. “Just by changing the look of my furniture I have been able to upgrade and modernise without having to buy new,” says Gail. “M F Turnbull has created looks that suit my character house and that are specifically designed for my taste.” CT M F Turnbull 46 Mowbray Street Waltham Christchurch T (03) 365 2519 E info@mfturnbull.co.nz www.mfturnbull.co.nz

Goods & Services | Transform Decorators

Transport & Motoring | Shepherd & Kime

Interior designs with the Midas touch

Full spectrum panel and paint repairs As one of the longest standing panel and paint mechanics in Christchurch, Shepherd & Kime has a no-nonsense approach to handling demand. Their motto, “the best for panel and paint” has garnered them a stellar reputation and a large following. This year marks 20 years since Shepherd & Kime first opened its doors. When young panel beaters Gary Shepherd and Errol Kime joined forces to create a collision repair centre, they quickly made a reputation for high quality panel and paint repairs. There have been huge advancements in the motoring industry since then, but Shepherd

Interior decoration may seem like an easy enough DIY option that saves you money, but in reality, the scope of decorating is often underestimated and it’s easy to muck it up. To get the finish you’re after takes a certain level of skill and professionalism, like that of the team at Transform Decorators. When Jade Tainui established Tranform Decorators in 2011 with wife Jenni, he had 10+ years of painting experience behind him, but you’d never have guessed it was their first business venture. In the five years they’ve been operating they’ve completed some large scale and bespoke projects for some high profile clients. Their sought-after skills have seen them contracted to paint Linwood College’s gymnasium and library, conduct regular work for Build7, and Jade was even flown up to Auckland to work on a 350 sqm residence in Greenhithe. “Getting good people around our business who have given us solid advice has been a key for us continuing,” says Jenni, who takes care of all the admin and keeps things running smoothly from the office. “You can be the best painter or tradesperson, but if you don’t have your business in order and the boring parts sorted, then you will struggle.” The team may be small – comprised of Jade, Jenni and apprentice painter Jackson who specialises in spray work – but their attention to all aspects of the business means they are capable of plenty. Although they specialise in new homes and Jade especially enjoys working on high spec and bespoke homes, their scope of services includes everything from small private repairs to commercial jobs and line painting. But regardless of the size of the job, all work is produced to the same impeccable finish.

Most people have a general idea but are not sure how to pull it all together. It’s worth investing up front to get a professional job that will last.

Congratulating Shepherd and Kime on their 50th Anniversary. We import most of these products directly from the manufacturer into our warehouse and then deliver direct to the customer, guaranteeing the most efficient distribution structure and lowest price possible.

“We are not the kind of painter/decorators to come in and whip the job out as fast as possible and disappear. We are fussy and don’t like to take short cuts.” Often they work directly with the builder who has ascertained what the client likes, in which case they can simply advise on colour, finish and technique. When they do work directly with the client however, they like to meet in person to talk through the client’s vision and discuss whether that’s possible for the space and budget, and offer alternatives if not.

& Kime continue to step up to the challenge, including opening a second Antigua Street branch to help cater to the spread of demand. When Gary and Errol retied in 2006, the reins of the business were handed over to new owners, Gerard Kime and Dave Kennedy, who adopted the same level of commitment and services to their customers. It was a seamless transition and in the years following another branch was opened, this time in Burnside, to offer their services to those on the airport side of town.

Quick, quality work What sets Shepherd & Kime apart from their competitors is their ability to work efficiently and without compromising on quality. Each branch offers a full complement of services to keep people moving, from car park dings to major collision repairs, full body re-sprays and even free loan vehicles. “We work closely with all insurance companies and are a preferred repairer for several of them,” Gerard says. “We all work together to minimise a client’s concerns and make their experience hassle-free.” As members of the NZ Collision Repair Association and the Motor Trade Association, Shepherd & Kime remain at the forefront of the industry and up to date with the latest industry knowledge and developments. With over 40 years’ experience in the industry, Shepherd & Kime’s skilled technicians know exactly what you want and aim to get you mobile as soon as possible. Transport & Motoring | Leading Edge Atuomotive

Keeping people on the move Vehicle technology is forever advancing and although it’s exciting to see what’s being invented, you want to be sure your car is placed in knowledgeable hands. As it happens, Leading Edge Automotive (LEA) is one of Christchurch’s leading European specialists, committed to learning the latest in automotive advancements. This year LEA celebrates a decade of successful service. Specialising in European vehicles, specifically BMW, VW, Volvo and Audi, all LEA technicians are focused on providing European vehicle owners with professional, convenient, friendly service. Managing director, Joris Sanders, has long had a passion for all things technology, especially cars. He capitalised on this passion upon entering the workforce, completing his apprenticeships in both automotive engineering and electrical engineering.

Leading Edge Automotive: • European automotive specialists • Full-service workshop • Associated member of MTA and Auto Super Shoppes • Convenient, central location.

“Along with the executive committee we organise training courses for the industry, social events, and discuss what members may require and assist in providing these or informing the national branch,” he says.

His first job as a qualified automotive technician was with a leading dealership where he was employed to work on late-model cars – a niche in the market he became increasingly drawn to serve.

“We now have a team of nine, are in the process of hiring more, and have just expanded by taking over the whole building. This has grown our capacity to repair more vehicles on a daily basis and allow more efficiency.”

In 2006 a unique opportunity presented itself and Joris grasped at it. He purchased a local, long running automotive company that had just hit the market and he rebranded it as Leading Edge Automotive.

All LEA technicians are qualified and hold their warrant of fitness certificates. While they cover everything from a bulb change to a complete motor overhaul, it’s their commitment to remaining at the forefront of the industry that customers find most appealing.

As a family owned business, Joris, his wife and business partner Natasha, together with a dedicated team, built LEA into the full service European auto specialist it is today.

Building up a brand

As the regional chair for the MTA HUB, which includes Canterbury, Ashburton and the West Coast, Joris is focused on expanding his education and carrying new techniques across to his business.

“As a workshop we are continually investing in new tools and training required to repair vehicles. All work is carried out in-house. We have also seen that customers’ levels of expectation have grown and they expect a high level of professionalism and cleanliness from their workshop. “Going forward we are focused on providing European vehicle owners with professional, convenient and friendly service in a central location.” CT Leading Edge Automotive 480 Selwyn Street Christchurch T (03) 366 3384 E joris@lead.co.nz www.leadingedgeautomotive.co.nz — Advertising Feature

“The biggest highlight has been starting the business with just myself, my wife and an apprentice in a small workshop, and within three years moving into a much larger workshop,” Joris says.

It is just such a beautiful place and everything we hoped for,” Sylvia Fidow, Principal of West Rolleston Primary School, is voicing the feelings of the whole school community about their brand new facility in Rolleston. West Rolleston is a “foundation” school – a school opened for the first time and not one that is the result of a merger. “To have been part of the process to bring the concept of this school to reality has been an absolute privilege - a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Sylvia says.

West Rolleston School was announced in 2014 as part of the Ministry of Education’s Christchurch Schools Rebuild Programme. Following the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes Rolleston experienced substantial and rapid population growth. The new school provides for this growing population and gives local families a wider range of schooling options.

A key factor in delivering the project on time and under budget was working closely with the various end-user groups for the school, extracting the necessary information and feedback to ensure the end result was fit for purpose. Now the striking-looking school buildings, clad in corrugated iron and natural materials, sit strongly in their landscape. “The build took 12 months and everything has been completed to a very high finish with underfloor heating in all the studios and extremely good acoustics.”

Architectus was the appointed architect and Southbase the selected construction company

The brief for Southbase was to future proof the school by providing planning and infrastructure for 750 students. The construction included teaching spaces, an administration area, library, resource areas, gymnasium and special education units, as well as a versatile outdoor learning and play space.

“We really did have a ‘green fields’ site to begin with and were able to develop the school’s vision and values to reflect our philosophy of creating authentic leaning opportunities for our children. Sustainability, valuing the environment, community inclusion and life-long learning form the platform for all that we do on a daily basis.”

for the school’s design and build – a total project value of over $16 million.

Nature and the environment are very important for us – we’ve planted an orchard and plan to establish a chicken coop. This is a school with a country feel, but with a contemporary focus as well. - SYLVIA FIDOW, PRINCIPAL

The school opened on February 1 with 77 students in Years 1 – 4. As of Term 3 there are 120 students and next year the school will welcome Years 5 – 8. The local Ngai Tahu iwi, Te Taumutu Runanga, gifted the school its Maori name – Te Kura o Te Uru Kowhai. The kowhai is significant because this beautiful native tree has grown in abundance in the area over time. “Te Taumutu Runanga also worked closely with us to share the history of the local area so it could be used to help determine some of the learning spaces within the school. “These internal spaces have all been chosen to reflect the history of the land and peoples of Rolleston, from early Maori occupation through the early European settlers and the subsequent stages of growth up to today. Each learning studio represents the culture through a direct link to colour and the environment.” Blue (kikorangi) has been chosen to represent the significance of the water that has helped in the formation of the Canterbury Plains; green

(kakariki) has been chosen to represent the plantings which grew in the vicinity of Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) and along the nearby streams, while yellow (kowhai) represents the resilience of New Zealand’s national tree. The school’s design is very flexible enabling classes to work collaboratively in learning studios where you will find more than one teacher. Each studio has all the necessary resources to teach not only reading, writing and maths, but also cooking, science and technology, computing and robotics. Each of the learning studios currently in use has also been gifted a Maori name – Te Kete Kakano (the seed basket for new entrants), Ta Ara Tupu (the emerging path for Years 1 and 2) and Te Ara Whanake (the growing path for Years 3 and 4). “Nature and the environment are very important for us – we’ve planted an orchard and plan to establish a chicken coop. This is a school with a country feel, but with a contemporary focus as well”, says Sylvia summing up the school’s focus.

Education | Lyttelton Primary School

Lyttelton Primary’s stunning new space “It’s like being in an art gallery – every window is a beautiful painting.” These were the words of one of the students about the new Lyttelton Primary School located on the hillside of Lyttelton with spectacular views of the harbour. “I couldn’t have expressed it better myself,” says Diana Feary, principal of Lyttelton Primary. “The design and build of this school has been truly amazing and we feel very lucky to now be all together in this stunning space after a wait of two years.” Lyttelton Primary School is the result of the merger of Lyttelton Main and Lyttelton West schools, announced in 2014 as part of the Ministry of Education’s “Greater Christchurch Education Renewal Plan”.

available to create really interesting internal areas very conducive to learning. “I understand that the community found the building dominant on the site, but it had to be large to fit 350 students and staff. When we opened in May this year we had an open day for the community. Most people were impressed by the internal design and the orientation to maximise the superb views.”

The new school, built on the site of the former Main School, was designed by ASC Architects and was not without its critics in the Lyttelton community.

With the design determined it was the task of the teams at Naylor Love and TBIG to manage the project through to its completion. “What was superb is that they never wavered from the agreed completion deadline, even when under great pressure.”

“The architects had a relatively tight and complex site to work with, says Diana, “but they were very clever in the way they used the space

The opening of the new premises marked the first time all Lyttelton Primary School students had been under one roof. Diana says merging

two communities was challenging and the new school needed to create a space that gave students and teachers a real sense of belonging. “I think we achieved that. There is a wonderful calming, uplifting and welcoming feeling inside within the building.” The school is designed as a modern learning environment with four open plan leaning spaces over two floors so as much outdoor space as possible remained on the site. In addition there is an administration area, a reception lounge, a library and technology space. The school also worked alongside the Loons Theatre Trust to build a venue that served as a school hall during the day and a theatre at night.

We were very honored to be part of the Lyttleton Primary School project. It is a project that I take great pride in being able to say I was part of and get to give back and restore something that was part of my childhood and the school I attended when I was a young boy. It’s a project that is not only great for the school but great for the community. From myself Duncan Hedgecock my son and Co manager William Hedgecock plus all the crew of ADVANCED BRICK AND BLOCK LTD we wish the school all the best.
