That’s why earlier this year we announced a $503 million package which unashamedly targets offenders to get them off our streets by providing additional resources to resolve more crime and targeting criminal gangs and organised crime. The Safer Communities package will provide an extra 1,125 police staff across New Zealand, including 880 sworn police officers. This package provides a clear mandate for sending police to areas we know they’re needed. Canterbury will receive 70 new police staff over the next four years – with the first new recruits on the beat in November this year. As part of this allocation, Selwyn will join greater Christchurch, Rangiora, Ashburton and Timaru in gaining a 24/7 police presence. The package also includes a new 24/7 non-emergency police number to make it simpler to report low-level or historic crime, or simply get in touch with your local station at any time of the day. There will be new resources targeted at disrupting and dismantling organised crime, and more specialist investigators in the areas of child protection, sexual assault and family violence. But it’s not just about the numbers. It’s about results, and this package comes with some challenging targets. They include police attending at least 98 percent of all home burglaries within 48 hours. They currently attend 96 percent 86 percent of those within 48 hours. We can do better to help address a crime that is disturbing and invasive. Here’s a surprising fact: the most common age of an apprehended burglar last year was 16 years old. That’s why police will now put more time, effort and resources into working alongside other agencies with at-risk individuals and communities. We recognise we must intervene more effectively to stop young people offending and prevent them moving on to even more serious crime. This, together with our three-strikes policy, which ensures the worst repeat criminals receive the maximum allowable sentence with no parole, demonstrates how committed we are to keeping you and your family safe. We’ve also increased frontline policing by half a million hours a year by investing in new technology. That’s the equivalent of putting about 350 more police on the beat. Investing more in police will make our communities safer. It will reduce crime and reoffending, and help steer some of our most disadvantaged young people onto a more productive path. That’s an outcome worth investing in for Canterbury, and for the rest of New Zealand.

Helping you paddle in more of what you want

Competition

There are many ways to prospect for sales and the professional salesperson uses as many as possible.

In business we all talk about dealing with the competition. Interestingly, by definition, competition implies competing at a similar level with a goal to attain supremacy.

You never know where your next good prospect will come from, or which approach will appeal to a specific prospect, so the more methods you can use, the better results will be generated. Keep in mind that prospecting is a numbers game. The more you do, the easier it will be to reach the better, more qualified, high-potential prospects. Techniques I use include: Research The best salespeople constantly conduct research. The advantage is it provides you with names of decision-makers, telephone numbers, addresses and background information on the company. In today’s marketplace, the internet can provide you with excellent data since most companies have their own web pages.

I immediately see a fundamental flaw in this train of thought in businesses today. You see, ultimately, we strive to be the only ones who do what we do the way we do it. By definition, if you are unique, then there is no competition. No one doing what you do, the way you do it. So with this dilemma in mind, clearly we aren’t genuinely being the only ones who do what we do the way we do it. This desired uniqueness exists only in your mind.

Telephone prospecting The key to using the telephone, is to sell the appointment rather than trying to do your selling over the phone. With planning and good skills, the telephone is clearly the most efficient method for prospecting large numbers of potential accounts. The downside is you have to be skilful in overcoming obstacles like voicemail and “gatekeepers”. Face-to-face prospecting Face-to-face prospecting calls (inappropriately referred to as cold calling), can be effective in some, but not all types, of businesses. If you sell to smaller businesses or deal with decision-makers/ influencers at middle-management levels, then this can be a very good method. It’s particularly good for salespeople who sell to a broad marketplace (such as a copier salesperson who can prospect any office or business), or a distributor salesperson who can simply make a timely call on the owner). Referrals The general rule is always ask for referrals - and ask at every opportunity. This means that when you visit a customer, or make a sale, you should ask. A referral is often a powerful entry into a prospect’s business and frequently will result in an “easy” sale. Mail prospecting Mail and email is a useful approach for prospecting and preselling. It is simple to send a “personalised letter” to a prospect to trigger interest and get a response. Typically, the letter, even when accompanied by literature, will generate a small response. The real value is that it sets the stage for a phone call or visit. Networking Networking is simply creating opportunities to meet other people who may want to form mutually beneficial relationships. Most professionals do insufficient networking, so build a network of partners to keep an open eye and ear for new opportunities. Always have your business cards at the ready and an elevator pitch well prepared.

More work is required in terms of our service delivery, marketing statements and market positioning. Too many businesses set their ultimate goal as being “to achieve our clients’ expectations” or even to “excel client expectations”. Frankly, if this is the case, you’re setting the bar too low and won’t ever rise to truly being unique in the marketplace. When your service delivery is much the same as Jo down the road, all the clients have to compare you with is price. That’s a beating to nowhere. Statistically, across all industry types, it has been said that only 15 percent of people will leave you due to your price, but 68 percent will leave because of “perceived indifference” – or a feeling that you just don’t really care. Setting aside dedicated time to improve your client interaction or “defining moments” can reap enormous rewards for the time invested. As to what you should do – it starts with seeing things from the client’s viewpoint and perspective. How? Well why not ask them. Yes it’s scary and you will be confronted with things you might not like – but listen, and more importantly, act on it and you will have some very dedicated clients who really do want to see you succeed. Feel the fear and do it anyway – get started. Today – not tomorrow or next week or next month.

Sorting shareholder agreements During the last six months I have had several longstanding clients ask for advice regarding their company shareholdings. They all seemed concerned with succession planning and what would happen if one of them died or was permanently disabled. After their insurance advisor and I reviewed their arrangements, we varied their existing shareholder agreements to include some buy-sell provisions and a process for new shareholders. A company is by far the best legal vehicle for joint ventures. It is easy to incorporate, as the whole process is done online. However, what is crucial to success is what you agree on behind the scenes. This is where shareholder and buy-sell agreements come into play.

Virtual reality doesn’t compete with reality Virtual reality is here today. You can buy a headset from the electronics shop at your mall, plug it into a PC or games console and be transported to an impressive 3D world. You can move around freely, manipulate things and equipment, and lose yourself in beautiful environments with your friends – everything that sci-fi promised us. Even low-fi versions where you simply slip your smartphone into a casing or even cardboard box are surprisingly effective. Goldmach Sachs estimates that once we get past the initial hype and wow factor, the virtual and augmented reality industry will be worth $100 billion per annum by 2025.

A shareholder agreement will document key arrangements between the shareholders, from governance right down to distribution of dividends.

Chances are your first experience will be a demo in a local mall or technophile friend’s house and most likely of a game or 3D movie.

A shareholder agreement could include arrangements regarding:

Once you’ve done that your mind will race as you brainstorm business applications and uses in training, sales, planning and communication.

• The company structure and who appoints or removes the directors. This is important as directors make decisions that ultimately affect the value of the shareholding • What happens if a shareholder wants to sell their shares. This can be disruptive, so you will want to have a mechanism controlling the sale

The training and education industries are already being shaken up by the possibilities of virtual simulations, especially for expensive, hazardous, easily damaged or high-risk scenarios.

• What happens if you want to bring on new shareholders; you will need a mechanism to make sure the new shareholders are bound by the terms of the agreement

Expensive technical equipment, such as MRIs or plant machinery, can be hard to access for training or expensive if broken by rookie mistakes. The memorable experience also leads to greater retention of processes and a higher likelihood of changing behaviour – often the real purpose of training.

• Who manages the company and how are shareholders remunerated for their work for the company. By making clear how shareholders are remunerated for their work, separately to any entitlement to a dividend, you can avoid disputes

In the world of sales, VR has obvious wow factor. It can fully demonstrate product features to prospective clients and personalise it to their tastes or location. High-end virtual real estate is already a thing.

• How financial information is accessed by non-director shareholders

VR is also interactive, making it an ideal planning tool. Beyond merely viewing new premises you could map out various factory and warehouse configurations to plan and optimise your processes.

• A policy on payment of dividends. This can be a testy subject between shareholders • A policy on repayment of shareholder loans • What if the shareholders disagree. In the absence of a mechanism for resolving disputes or agreement, shareholders can end up deadlocked. When that happens, the only way forward is to apply to the High Court. By making sure your company structure is supported by a comprehensive shareholder agreement, with adequate buy-sell and insurance cover, you can have peace of mind and focus on achieving success.

We can improve on the real world by adding a layer with immediate feedback, guiding instructions, multiple configurations and the ability to mix things up however we like. Rather than simulating equipment, good training is about simulating processes, best practices and consequences. The result is more effective experiential training, done safely virtually with analytics certifying employee skills and identifying areas for improvement. Time can be fast forwarded to see the impact, and accidents rewound so you can safely practice again. So many things important to our business processes are invisible to us. Smart use of virtual reality techniques can help us see more than previously possible.

The changing world of work There used to be one question I would consistently be asked, more than any other: How does a young leader gain leadership skills without an opportunity to lead? In the past few months this question has been superseded by another: What will work look like in the future and what direction should I take to ensure I have a job? The focus has shifted from ‘being the leader, boss or owner’ to more of a raw desire to retain any hold in the workplace by having an employable skill. I am not sure I know the answer, beyond a logical and pragmatic response to the digital age. However, I do think our current environment requires us to include innovative thinking in our approach to staying employed - and the more agile our mindset, the greater our chance of survival or success. For example, some universities have moved to pre-recorded lectures and removed the opportunities for face-to-face engagement. Does this mean that in future we will no longer require academics? I think not. We can acknowledge the significant steps forward in terms of getting a computer to ‘think’ (and even to demonstrate ‘emotion’ and ‘empathy’) however, there is much to be said for ‘seeing the whites of their eyes’ in order to be fully engaged and actively challenged. Preparedness for employment opportunities in the future may be led more by growth in emerging industries than by losses of specific roles. The change may not look like the sudden eradication of a function, but instead an evolution of a current job to meet unfolding needs. For example, information technology is our fastest growing export sector and will still require leaders, will most definitely require innovators and creative thinkers, and will certainly continue to require people to produce and sell products. If it is to be that our businesses will be smaller in terms of the number of people employed, then should our focus be on creating more of them? Our long-standing industries such as health, education, social services, agriculture and tourism are expected to continue offering good employment opportunities and in New Zealand that’s great news, as they are the foundation of ‘who we are’ as an economic provider. With an understanding of our key employment opportunities and attention focused on creating more SME size organisations - the next question I will be asking is not as simple as ‘developing a leader’ or ‘what will my job look like?’ but: 'What will the pattern of our changing work environment look like?' so that I start moving in that direction as a leader.

Five tips to make LinkedIn work for you

Resilience and grit

Businesspeople are often great at making connections on LinkedIn. A quick click on connect or accept and you’ve added another name and face to your list. But what happens next?

It’s fair to say that if you hear the word ‘resilience’ used in Christchurch these days, it’s quite likely to be shortly followed by a collective groan.

If you’re one of those people with 300+ connections but no idea how to make some mileage from LinkedIn, you’re certainly not alone. These five simple tips should help you move to another level and really get LinkedIn working for you and your business. 1. Have a detailed profile Make sure your profile is succinct but offer more than just the basics, so that your skills and experience are on display and people can understand what you have to offer. A professional photo is a must. Profiles with photos are many times more likely to be viewed. 2. Be an active user Post and comment regularly, join some LinkedIn groups so that you can participate in conversations relating to your industry, and keep track of what your connections are doing.

Resilience helps cope with stress Resilience does actually help us cope with the challenges that living and working in a rebuilt city presents. Navigating the multitude of road works with increased driving times can lead to frustration, and there are also still people waiting for insurance claims on their properties to be settled six years after the event. And yes, managing these situations does take resilience and all of these stresses inevitably have an effect on how people perform in the workplace. Grit helps drive passion and performance Wherever we live, we live in a challenging world, so developing the characteristics for grit makes a difference if you want to be happy and successful. Having grit can predict success in a lot of areas including relationships, work choices, ‘stickability’ and success in a job.

A key contact starting a new job, for example, may provide an opportunity for you to work for their new company. Make good use of company Facebook posts by also using them on LinkedIn.

Meaningful work helps create happier, healthier organisations Happiness (reframed as ‘flourishing’ by Professor Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology at Pennsylvania University) is a by-product of doing meaningful things.

Just remember they need to work for a business audience. The private messaging part of LinkedIn is also useful for keeping in touch with people and making times to talk or meet.

If you want to find ways to improve your own happiness and that of people you work with, Seligman’s PERMA model is a great place to start.

3.Get endorsed for your skills Endorsements are a useful way of promoting your skills. Members who have a greater number of endorsements also rank higher in LinkedIn search results.

P – Positive emotions. Try viewing the past, present and future in an optimistic way. Having positive emotions, such as those experienced when enjoying a task, has been shown to help people come up with creative and alternative solutions when faced with challenges.

If you are light on endorsements, tell some of your close contacts that you are trying to build your LinkedIn profile and ask if they could endorse you for certain skills. Endorsing others is a very positive way to network and keep in touch with people that you may not see regularly.

E – Engaged. Do activities that you enjoy. Be absorbed, interested and involved in your work. It’s unrealistic to think that you’ll enjoy every aspect of it, but if you have had a challenging day, are there activities you can do when you get home that really engage you and you can submerge yourself in?

4.Keep an eye on who’s checking you out Make sure you check who has been looking at your profile, by using the ‘Who viewed your profile’ feature.

R – Relationships. It’s important to be connected, supported and valued by other people in your organisation. Having positive relationships with others is an important part of life, both in and out of work.

Nowadays a simple mistake can turn into a viral sensation within a matter minutes. Take for example the infamous United Airlines debacle. The footage of a passenger being dragged by security off one of their flights has been viewed more than five million times on Facebook and now every move that United Airlines makes is in the spotlight. It has since come to light that the passenger himself was no saint before the incident but that hasn’t hindered the backlash United Airlines has received. Though most cases will not go to that extreme, when running a business, reputation is everything and upholding that reputation is paramount. It’s fair to say that everyone has their days and we cannot be perfect 100 percent of the time, but next time you feel like you’re having a moment of weakness in a difficult situation, here are some steps to prevent the social media backlash.

If you feel like a situation is too much for you to handle, have someone close by who can take over the situation for you while you close your eyes and think of your happy place. Return to the situation only when you’ve stopped seeing red.

Unfortunately, even in times when the customer is overreacting, it is vital to keep your cool and treat them with the utmost respect. Be the bigger person so if you ever get caught on camera, you’ll look like a real winner and that viral sensation might just work in your favour.

So next time you feel like you’re about to explode in front of that frustrating customer, picture that moment being viewed by millions of people around the world - is that really what you want yourself and your business to be remembered by?

Lost in translation By Lydia Truesdale

The workplace today is a multitude of generations. Between graduates, long time professionals and those somewhere in between, and then superiors, subordinates and colleagues, it can be a difficult scene to navigate. A good place to start is with effective communication. Communication is most commonly defined as a transfer of information, thoughts or ideas to create a shared understanding between a sender and a receiver. But it’s even more complex than this. Each generation has its own unique set of communication preferences. These preferences are sculpted by values and attitudes of the past and present, cultural upbringings and behaviours among other things. While this set of preferences provides, intra-generationally, a comfortable and fluid stream of internal and external communication, inter-generationally these nuances can be complex, making communication often misunderstood, misinterpreted, and effectively not serving its purpose. Below is a guide to communicating with each generation.

GENERATION Z / iGEN / CENTENNIALS (1996ish and later) “Growing up in a time of uncertainty (the post - 9/11 world, the Great Recession) and changing norms (increased racial diversity, shifting gender roles), Gen Z is mature, selfdirected, and resourceful. They know how to self-educate and find information. [They] are determined to ‘make a difference’ and ‘make an impact’,” website IID writes. Its tips for communicating with Generation Z are: communicate across multiple platforms; connect through images; communicate through snackable (concise) content; see them as diverse; don’t talk down, treat them as adults; feed Gen Z’s curiosity. MILLENNIALS / GEN Y (1977ish – 1995ish) “Positive and confident, Millennials are ready to take on the world. Provide structure. Provide leadership and guidance. Encourage Millennial’s self-assuredness, ‘can-do’ attitude, and positive personal self-image. “Take advantage of Millennial’s comfort level with teams; encourage them to join. Millennial employees are multi-taskers on a scale you’ve never seen before. Capitalise on Millennial’s affinity for networking. Provide a fun environment,” human resources expert Susan M Heathfield writes.

SERVICE CENTRE Complete and reliable Warrant of Fitness Service & Repairs for all types of vehicle Catering for all vehicles

GENERATION X (1965ish – 1976ish)

“Communicate in person but try to avoid meetings; one-to-one will be the best method. “Keep it up to date and motivating. Music Relay the message that their contribution is at work, instant messaging (IM), and fast needed, reward them with money, and give computers will help Gen X stay productive. Be them a meaningful title. Boomers work to live, willing to negotiate. Limit in-person meetings so converse with them about their work more and offer alternatives like conference calls, video, and web conferencing when collaboration than you do about their home lives,”executive coach and leadership consultant, Michael S. is truly needed. Seaver writes. “For face-to-face meetings, stick to small TRADITIONALISTS/SILENT GENERATION productive groups and skip long planning (1945ish and before) sessions. Be direct. Trust them. Invite but “Because traditionalists respect authority, put don’t push them to participate. Limit duty before fun, and strictly adhere to rules, bureaucracy; provide access to information they tend to lead with a command-and-control and resources without burdening them with style. They’re very directive and prefer to be corporate politics and excessive meetings,” communicated to formally and through the Bloomberg website writes. written word (think… memos). BABY BOOMERS (1946ish – 1964ish) “They take satisfaction in doing a job well, “Baby boomers are known to be workaholics, desire high quality in their products and services, and aren’t afraid to question authority. They want to be collegial leaders, so working with them as a team member is relevant and valuable.

so make sure that you share with them how much you respect their experience. When it comes to providing feedback, no news is good news, so only approach them with something that is paramount to their performance,” Seaver writes.

New Tax rules for contractors By Neil Russ

Good news for contractors: from April 1, 2017, contractors subject to the schedular payment rules are now able to elect their withholding tax rate without having to apply to Inland Revenue for a special tax code. This provides increased flexibility, makes it easier for taxpayers to self-manage their tax obligations and aims to minimise the overall cost to the system.

Neil Russ Buddle Findlay

notification form (IR330C) for any schedular payments they will receive on or after April 1, 2017 and provide this form to the payer of their schedular payments. Contractors can pick a rate they would like tax to be deducted at, and can pick any rate between 10 percent and 100 percent. Inland Revenue has provided a tax rate estimation tool for contractors on its website, which prescribes a tax rate based on a contractor’s estimated income and expenditure for the year.

• A minimum rate of withholding applies to contractors (for non-resident contractors and contractors with temporary work visas, the minimum rate is 15 percent, and for all other contractors the minimum rate is 10 percent)

Prior to April 1, a contractor subject to the schedular payment rules was subject to a flat rate of withholding. This rate often did not match a contractor’s actual income tax liability. Contractors could obtain their own special tax code to alter their rate, but this process could sometimes be cumbersome on the part of a taxpayer by requiring them to apply to Inland Revenue and provide supporting information.

There are the following limited circumstances where a contractor will not be able to elect their own rate:

• If a contractor has changed their rate twice in a 12-month period, the consent of the payer is required for any further rate changes.

• Where a contractor has not provided their name and IRD number, a 45 percent rate of withholding applies

Now, new rules for contractor withholding rates apply. Contractors subject to the schedular payment rules must complete a new tax rate

• When a contractor has not met a liability under an Inland Revenue Act, the commissioner can prescribe a rate of withholding

• If a contractor has not elected their own rate, a ‘standard rate’ applies based on the relevant rate listed in schedule four of the Income Tax Act 2007. Payments by labour-hire firms to their contractors will also now be subject to the

schedular payment rules. Contractors of labour-hire firms were previously required to manage their own tax obligations, including provisional tax. Labour-hire firms will therefore also be required to withhold payments made to contractors under the amendments outlined above. Neil Russ leads Buddle Findlay’s tax practice. He specialises in corporate and international tax issues, as well as structured transactions. In addition to his tax expertise Neil has a multijurisdictional background in banking and capital markets transactions.

Cut down to size Is tall poppy syndrome killing your bottom line? By Rachael Mason

“Unfortunately tall poppy syndrome is still alive in New Zealand, which is a shame because it restricts a lot of people from getting external recognition,” Ross Buckley, executive chairman of KPMG New Zealand, says. If you are Kiwi, you have probably heard of tall poppy syndrome, which is defined as a perceived tendency to discredit or disparage those who have achieved wealth or prominence in public life. In short, it is cutting down those who have grown taller than their peers. According to a report by the University of Otago in 2015, half of all the Kiwi entrepreneurs interviewed experienced tall poppy syndrome. One of the key findings of the study was that entrepreneurs may purposefully limit business growth because they don’t want to attract attention (Kirkwood, 2007). I moved to New Zealand from the United States six months ago, and I absolutely love it. However, I often come across incredibly talented individuals here in New Zealand who have limited their ambitions or downplayed their success due to their environment. It is even considered admirable here to hide from the spotlight, or live below your means as to avoid too much attention. Now, considering I come from the land of the giant neon sign and Lebron James, I found this difference to be quite stark. While humility is an important quality for successful people to maintain, I could not help but wonder how it affected New Zealand businesses. I have come to the conclusion that it has huge implications. Kiwis seem to turn their noses up at the idea of having to “sell” to people, and when you consider the prevalence of tall poppy syndrome here, it is easy to see why.

Kiwis seem to turn their noses up at the idea of having to “sell” to people, and when you consider the prevalence of tall poppy syndrome here, it is easy to see why.

An important aspect of growing any business is its marketing capability. Perhaps this is because as you grow your business, not only will you grab the attention of your potential clients, you will also be noticed by your competitors and other potentially negative people in your circle. You may find that you become the target of attacks on you personally or your work. Now this happens everywhere in the world. What is unique in New Zealand is that Kiwis often also become the subject of scrutiny and ridicule in groups of people who genuinely care about them. Thinking outside of the box is reason enough in New Zealand for family and friends to raise their eyebrows at you. It is important to have a passion for and belief in what your purpose is as an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs can change the way we live and work. Their innovations can create jobs,

improve our standards of living, and contribute to a more prosperous society.

Entrepreneurship is not a zero sum game, and there is enough success to go around.

Most business owners I know are in business because they believe in what they are doing or they believe they can help people. If that is the case, why not shout it from the rooftops?

Sales and marketing are cornerstones of a successful business. Don’t let the fear of judgement stop you from becoming a success.

Have a passion for what you are doing and tell people about it every single day.

Putting people before profit By Natalia Rietveld

The ultimate aim in business, according to the number one hit on Google, is to become rich.

Krama (meaning scarf in Khmer) is a traditional Cambodian garment and a national symbol.

For the co-founder of Krama & Co, Rebecca Parnham, becoming rich from her business will never happen, and that’s exactly how she wants it.

Nowadays the Krama still has a million different uses. Rebecca describes it as the “Swiss-army knife of parenting”.

On a trip to Cambodia in 2010, Rebecca wept as she stood by what is known as the ‘killing tree’. In the 1970s it was at this tree that thousands of innocent people mercilessly lost their lives at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. “I was overwhelmed that despite such a devastating history and while still facing profound poverty, the Cambodian people still showed incredible resilience and compassion,” Rebecca says. As a social worker Rebecca is fine-tuned to notice the good in a not so good situation. So through all the poverty and corruption she soon found a strength and that was the Krama.

After the civil war, when the Khmer Rouge stripped the people in Cambodia of all their belongings, it was the Krama that kept them alive. “They would literally boil water in the ground and boil their rice in the Krama,” Rebecca says.

It’s a blanket, it’s a changing mat, it dries away tears, it gives the best hugs and it was when Rebecca saw it being used on the handle bars of a bike in Cambodia to carry a child, that she had her lightbulb moment. “For me, in that moment, within the Krama I saw a strength and a skill, and an opportunity to help those people while celebrating such an amazing thing. “The women in the rural villages know how to weave these garments, but it’s a dying art because everything is so much cheaper in China.”

Currently working up to 60 hours a week without making a cent for herself, she has got Krama & Co off the ground with a loan from her mother. “I guess you could say we are running off the smell of an oily Krama.” Krama & Co intern Ruby Arrowfield says, “Rebecca gets so excited about, not only her vision and her purpose behind the Krama, but she absolutely loves the product.”

Krama & Co puts one US dollar back into a village fund.

“We are in the process of getting a doctor into the village once a month and another thing the woman want to have is water in their homes. So not only are they getting paid more for their product, but they can also feel proud in the fact that they are helping their community as well.” Krama is now available nationwide after the website www.krama.nz was launched on April 22.

Rebecca gets no bigger buzz than Krama’s uses as a parent. Every mother in her eyes needs at “I couldn’t sell a product and make money off it knowing the talented women who make them are least three Krama. “Wearing one, one in your nappy bag and one on the washing line.” making a pittance,” Rebecca says. “When we first went in and said to the women ‘we would Purchasing a Krama is not only a wage for the like to buy your Krama’ they told us the price and women in Cambodia, it’s enhancing their way we said ‘no way that’s not enough,’ so we pay of life. Strange stories By Lydia Truesdale

We’ve all heard the story of Ron Wayne: one of the original Apple co-founders who sold his 10 percent share in the company for just $800 back in 1976. Today those shares would be worth $35 billion. (Don’t feel bad for him though, he had the opportunity to later return to the company and still chose to put happiness ahead of profit). Surprisingly or not, the business world is filled with similarly fascinating and pivotal stories that have shaped the landscape of the global market. Here are five. BMW is what it is today because Germany lost World War I BMW originally started off as an aircraft manufacturing company. After Germany’s defeat in WWI, all airplane manufacturing companies had to cease production, one of the many terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. With the company facing bankruptcy, BMW shifted to motorcycle production, followed by the manufacturing of cars in 1928. Their current logo is a tribute to their aviation heritage. The founder of FedEx saved the company by gambling its last $5,000 at a Vegas casino Fred Smith successfully founded Federal Express in 1971. Three years later the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, unable to cover the fuel for its planes and unable to find any willing investors. So Smith flew to Vegas with $5,000 in his pocket and returned with $32,000. His rationale behind taking a chance like that with the last of the company funds? “What difference does it make? Without the funds for the fuel companies, we couldn’t have flown anyway.” Shortly after, Smith raised $11 million to keep the company afloat and by 1976 Federal Express made its first profit of $3.6 million. 50 percent of Dominos Pizza was traded for a second-hand VW Beetle The year was 1961. Brothers Tom and James Monaghan had purchased “DomiNick’s” the

ANTEATER Bex De Prospo and Peter Randrup’s startup flies in the face of traditional fare By Natalia Rietveld

If you were asked to name a classic Kiwi meal what would come to mind? Would it be meat and three veg? A steaming hot Sunday roast? Or would it be the Friday night steak and chips with a side of tap beer – you can’t get more Kiwi than that.

Management | Cover story “There’s 40 species of ants in NZ; I didn’t know that initially. Turns out there’s a massive range of flavours depending on the species, so I had to go out and find a very particular species of ants with a lemon grass flavor, which thankfully I managed to find.” - Bex De Prospo

“We are at completely different ends of the business, but we stay in constant communication,” Bex says. They both agree how uncanny it is that they managed to find each other and wholeheartedly believe that together they could run any business, no matter how absurd it may be.

Flavour sensation Currently Anteater’s ‘bread and butter’ is ants. Although to most they seem tiny and insignificant, Bex and Peter believe that they will remain at the forefront of their business. “There’s this massive thing about ants being used in restaurants all around the world,” Peter says. “There’s 40 species of ants in NZ; I didn’t know that initially. Turns out there’s a massive range of flavours depending on the species, so I had to go out and find a very particular species of ants with a lemon grass flavour, which thankfully I managed to find.” Bex says ants were the first, and will remain the core product.

A good confirmation that they were on to something worthwhile. Since then Anteater has continued to snowball.

Changing the mindset Eating meat has become part of the Kiwi culture and most people would rather die from over consumption than dream of giving it up; unfortunately, the rate at which we are eating meat is not sustainable. Thankfully a pair of young entrepreneurs believe they have come up with a solution that could perseude even the staunchest Kiwi bloke to give up the steak. It all began in May 2016 at Startup Weekend in Christchurch. Bex De Prospo, a student at Ara Institute of Canterbury at the time, met Peter Randrup, a marine biologist and manager of a small aquaculture business, who pitched the idea of edible insects in New Zealand after noticing the growing trend overseas. Without the right education the thought of eating insects would make most stomachs turn, so a little bit of skepticism is understandable, however, we Kiwis are a bit behind the eight ball as already 80 percent of the world’s cultures have bugs as part of their normal diet. Peter says he pitched the idea at Startup Weekend thinking nothing would come of it, but by the end of the weekend he had found a business partner in Bex and, what became Anteater, gained its first customer. “Our first customer was actually the number one restaurant in New Zealand, Roots restaurant in Lyttelton,” Peter says.

Change is hard to accept for a lot of people so why on earth would one consider swapping a beef burger for a bug burger? Put simply insects are incredibly good for you and they’re sustainable. In the perfect world that would be enough to convince the population, but both Bex and Peter knew when they started Anteater it was going to take more than that to change people’s minds.

“For our particular customers, that product is by far the most interesting. It’s a fairly approachable ingredient for high-end dishes and it looks more refined as opposed to other insects.” For such a small insect they sure pack a punch and as little as four or five ants as a seasoning on your meal is enough for a flavor explosion. The ants are used in a similar way to herbs, the chef will bruise them and sprinkle them on the dish at the last minute. Anteater’s products have featured in four of the top nine restaurants in New Zealand and at many high-profile events, such as TEDx Christchurch and Te Papa’s Bug Lab Exhibition, and it’s no surprise considering the products' nutritional benefits.

Bex explains to make this idea mainstream they aren’t working their way from the bottom up, they began at the top and plan on working their way down. “There’s a growing global industry behind edible insects, particularly in North America, and in parts of Europe it’s really gained momentum over the last six years. The cornerstone of what they’re doing in those markets is effectively supplement products on retail shelves, they’re additives to add protein to foods, but they’re not interesting enough products for the kind of clients we are targeting.” For Bex and Peter targeting different clients has played a huge part in getting over that mainstream hurdle. “If we can get top chefs at high-end restaurants to serve you these products you’re going to enjoy them, rather than just putting them on the shelves and expecting you to know what to do with them,” Bex says. The goal is to make people comfortable with the products on offer, so by only working with the best chefs they can be certain that the first experience people in New Zealand have with their edible insects, will be a good one.

Dynamic duo When it comes to Anteater, Bex and Peter are the epitome of excitement and are one hell of a team. “There’s been a huge sort of serendipity aspect behind the launching of this business. I nearly didn’t go to Startup Weekend,” Bex says. “My friend was selling a ticket at the last minute and I thought it was something that I should probably attend, and I almost didn’t join Peter’s team because as a group they seemed very over the top,” she laughs. “Peter and I realised within the context of one conversation, there was something about our working energy that was going to be really productive. So when Startup Weekend ended there was no question we would carry on with it. If anyone was going to make a go of it, it was going to be us.” Anyone starting a business will know that you need to work with people who have the same values as you, and ideally have different skillsets, and Bex and Peter have found that in each other. “It’s amazing how often Bex will say ‘you’re going to have to do this, I hate it’ and I’ll be like ‘really? That’s my jam’ I’m good at that and the reverse is true,” Peter says. Peter is in charge of the science production and sales part of the business and Bex sticks to logistics operations, marketing and administration.

Insects have more protein than steak, more omega fatty-acids than salmon and more calcium than milk – they also require a lot less space and maintenance than beef. In the United States, since 2010, the edible bug industry has been doubling every year and Anteater hopes to achieve the same growth here. “Imagine a burger or a patty that tastes better than red meat, is better for you and for the environment - and imagine it being cheaper as well,” Peter says. Although there may be some initial hesitance, hands-down, people will opt for the better tasting, healthier, cheaper option. It’s the sort of sustainable innovation that our food industry needs and by 2050, when posed with the question to name a classic Kiwi meal, maybe insect burgers will be the dish that comes to mind. Management | Rhys Darby You’d think for someone as naturally gifted in the comedy department as Rhys Darby, performing would have been something that he’d planned all along, but having a hit TV series, sought after stand-up acts and starring in many a movie was never in the pipelines. In fact, as a child his mother’s main concern was to keep him out of trouble. Rhys says growing up he had no time to think of anything other than school and sport, let alone becoming, arguably, one of New Zealand’s favorite actors. “I was too busy being a boy to think of acting,” Rhys explains. “My mother had me involved in a bit of everything, I was in soccer teams, I was a cyclist, I was in the school athletics team, I even played tennis and as a teenager I was in the Air Training Corps and the Army Cadets. I think her main aim, looking back, was to keep me off the streets or from falling in with the wrong crowd.” Being the epitome of energy, it was probably more to tire him out. After finishing high school, Rhys joined the New Zealand Army and became a soldier. Now if you’ve ever seen how Rhys portrays his time in the army, you’ll know that this wasn’t his calling. If one was to try and make sense of it, it would be the equivalent of trying to turn a block of jelly into a brick. Suppressing his theatrical nature would be a daunting task – even for the army. “It took a while for me to grow up and realise what I was supposed to do. In the army I

enjoyed doing all the physical stuff but I realised ‘I don’t want to be doing this forever’ and I left after about four years because it didn’t suit me,” he says. His time in the army clearly wasn’t lost on him, and like all great comedians he took his experience and turned it into some hilarious gags. His live performance of Imagine That referenced his time as a soldier and when released on DVD went platinum here in New Zealand. After the army Rhys went on to study at the University of Canterbury where he aspired to be a journalist. “I was always quite good with my English skills so that was the plan there.” The six o’ clock news would be far different to what we see today if he’d stayed on that path. But thankfully he “fell” into comedy.

Realising his calling Rhys says “it was really a destiny that I didn’t know was meant to be, until it squarely knocked me on the head.” He admits, looking back over his life, one thing that remained consistent was his “crazy sense of humor”. Practically on arrival at university, Rhys signed up to The Comedy Club as a bit of fun. “It was really just a bunch of like-minded guys meeting once a week, writing sketches and stuff, then I got a part-time job at a restaurant and met the chef there (Grant Lobban) and we created a comedy duo.” At the time, stand-up comedy wasn’t a thing in New Zealand, so the idea had never crossed Rhys’ mind and if he was to be honest, he wasn’t really interested in it either. “The thought of someone standing up behind a mic seemed really boring to me.” And to this day, even when doing stand-up, he has never been one to just ‘stand up behind a mic’ and that is what got him noticed. He is animated and often described as ‘different’ not the words we all like to hear, but it couldn’t work better for him. Initially inspired by Monty Python and Rowan Atkinson, he thought “maybe I could do something like that”, but living in New Zealand that would never be possible. It is so easy to plant a seed of doubt in your mind and give up before even starting. While Rhys, like most, was guilty of this in his earlier days, as he got a bit older, he realised that life wasn’t just about making money and he certainly didn’t want to wait to be comfortable before starting his comedy career, it just took a slight mindset adjustment.

Fringe Festival a go and from there it all happened in a very linear way, everything just began falling into place.

Making America great again It’s hard to imagine Rhys as anything other than an actor or a comedian. He has this natural way of being a little bit odd, that works in his favour – most wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Throughout his career, Rhys has remained Rhys. His voice is one that can’t be disguised and the way he portrays himself on stage and on screen has remained timeless and distinctive. He says his original plan of making it big in the UK was a struggle and America had been put in the ‘too hard basket’. “The UK had so much of their own talent, I got the feeling that they were all like ‘you’re from over there (New Zealand) - we will laugh at you, but we won’t give you job’.” Rhys planned on heading home after season one of Flight of the Conchords, in which Rhys played the character of Murray Hewitt the band manager. But the universe had other ideas.

Rhys says, what started purely as a hobby with a bunch of mates just having a laugh, has been forged into a lifelong career.

America opened its doors to season two and Rhys was offered a role in the hit movie Yes Man, so instead of heading home, Rhys took a slight detour.

It was when he began his solo act in Auckland that he began getting noticed. Naturally Rhys got excited and decided to give the Edinburgh

Something that had originally been placed in the ‘too hard basket’ was now the more viable option.

Throughout the years, Rhys has appeared in many sitcoms, TV adverts, movies, cartoons and comedy festivals. Currently living in LA with his family, Rhys is run off his feet with several projects including filming his part in the sequel of Jumanji which is set to be released in December this year. He’s taken by surprise when he’s known by these ‘famous actors’ because though, in his own words, he hasn’t done much, the things he has done have been really well-received. “Even Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson comes up to me on set and makes me be in his videos for his friends. “I’ll be thinking, ‘really? Okay, I mean he’s The Rock - but sure, I’ll be in a little video for your friends’,” he laughs. “You get over the star-struck feeling pretty quickly - now we can all enjoy a sandwich together.” Although he’s enjoying his time in LA and the opportunities that have come from it, New Zealand is still home. We may not have Dwayne Johnson here, but Rhys still misses us and squeezes New Zealand into his schedule every now and then. His show Mystic Time Bird will be touring NZ from July 9 through to August 15 this year. Tickets are still available, but selling out quick. Rhys may not have made the best soldier, sports star or journalist, but when he’s on the international stage representing New Zealand, he’s giving us a pretty good name. CT

Management | William Trubridge

One hundred metres beneath the ocean surface would be a torturous place for many, but it’s where you’ll find William Trubridge in his element. It’s where he’s chosen to make his living.

BENEATH

“I have a relationship with the depths, they beckon me beyond my means, cold dark vacant pressure, forever night, endless dreams,” the world-record free diver scribed.

THE SURFACE

Only a short time ago, any New Zealander representing their sport at a national or international level did so outside earning a primary income. Today, being a professional athlete is considered a fiscal profession like any other.

By Lydia Truesdale

Speaking from his residence in the paradise that is the Bahamas, William Trubridge has forged a successful career as a professional free diver.

One breath at a time You could swap William’s blood for sea water and he’d probably function just as well. Not because our blood contains a 98 percent similar chemical composition and almost the exact same PH as ocean water, but because that’s how innate being the in the water is to William. William’s family made the move from England to sunny Hawke’s Bay when he was just a young boy. Somewhat unconventionally, they sailed here, and as it so happens this was quite the influential voyage.

Growing up in and around water leant to William Not just successful by the accolades and the proclivity for the extreme, and the changes sponsorship he’s received, but successful in that the human body experiences during a deep dive he’s created a life that’s provided for by doing are nothing short of extraordinary. what he loves. The extreme sport of free diving consists of descending deep into the ocean on a single breath. There are nine competitive disciplines but William specialises in no-fins free diving. Wearing only a wetsuit and goggles, and using only a rope to guide him to his target, he draws a single breath and plunges to depths of 100-plus metres on it. “For me it’s the most pure form of free diving and it’s also the purest measure of human aquatic potential in the same way that a hundredmetre sprint is the purest measure of human speed – we don’t think of human speed as someone on a bike or in a race car,” the 36-year old says. It was at the age of 22, while in London studying for a Bachelor of Science in physiology and genetics, that William became aware of the sport of free diving. Having been long fond of recreational diving this titbit of information beckoned his attention.

“It’s not really so much about racking up that record tally, it’s more about exploring my own potential, trying to push my body and mind as deep as they’re capable of going and in that process defining human aquatic potential.”

“I travelled to the Caribbean from where I was in London at the time to give it a go and from that moment I was hooked,” he says.

When we hold our breath, or when our face is cooled such as by diving into water, a set of internal reflexes take place enabling us to function on a lower level of oxygen.

One decade and eighteen world records later, William continues to redefine what the human body can achieve.

These reflexes are more commonly known as the mammalian diving reflex and they occur in all air-breathing vertebrates. Three main changes

For me it’s the most pure form of free diving and it’s also the purest measure of human aquatic potential in the same way that a 100m sprint is the purest measure of human speed – we don’t think of human speed as someone on a bike or in a race car.

“It’s not really so much about racking up that record tally, it’s more about exploring my own potential, trying to push my body and mind as deep as they’re capable of going and in that process defining human aquatic potential.” Given that diving is unlike any other sport in that those bodily reflexes don’t occur anywhere else, the low-fatality statistics are a testament to the safety measures practiced by those involved. <

happen to the body: bradycardia, peripheral vasoconstriction and blood shift. The heart rate slows up to 50 percent, blood vessels narrow, reducing blood flow to limbs and instead directing it through a concentrated circuit to the heart and the brain, and blood plasma and water pass through organs and circulatory walls to the chest cavity to protect it from increased pressure. The lungs gradually fill with blood plasma which is then reabsorbed when pressure drops. Preparing for a deep-sea free dive is understandably more complex than holding your breath – which William can do for eight minutes when static, though a competitive dive typically takes about half that time. “As you swim you’re going to build up CO2 in your body because you can’t off-gas that by breathing, so you need to develop a high tolerance to carbon dioxide and to lactic acid in the muscles,” William says. “The main components [of training] would be CO2 tolerance, hypoxia/low oxygen tolerance training, which is a lot of pool training, breathhold stuff. “Flexibility is really important for both efficiency in movement and also for adaptation to pressure, so I do a lot of exercises similar to yoga, others are targeted at increasing the flexibility of the lungs.

“Mental training is really important as well as it’s a discipline that requires a lot of calm and composure, so we use a lot of techniques like visualisation, positive affirmation, mental anchors; those kinds of things,” he says. “The first record attempt I made was in May 2006 in the Red Sea in Egypt. I was just trying to calm the jitters more than anything else. Ultimately that record attempt was unsuccessful – I blacked out just upon reaching the surface.” In competitive diving, passing out within five seconds of surfacing renders the dive inadmissible. Not to be deterred, William’s first successful world record attempt came in April the following year, a depth of 81m in the constant weight without fins discipline. He’s since broken 17 further records, many of them his own, and the deepest he’s descended stands at 124m, last year in the successful free immersion record attempt. He was the first free diver to descend to 100 metres on a single breath in the discipline of constant weight no fins, and in 2011 won the World’s Absolute Freediver Award (WAFA), naming him best all-round free diver. While the records are a welcome recognition of him and his team, they’re not the be all and end all for William personally.

William admits they’re still discovering what depth humans were capable of reaching, but he wittingly theorises, “More than the current world record!” Somewhat similarly, he believes there isn’t an age humans shouldn’t dive past – the late female world champion and multiple record holder, Natalia Molchanova, was still breaking records at 53 – and he hasn’t lost his motivation for training and competing so it will be a while yet before he hangs up his goggles.

Looking to the future Somewhere in the mix William has managed to become an Apnea Academy instructor and AIDA instructor and trainer, and establish a dive school in the Bahamas, Vertical Blue, through which he personally teaches two to three courses per year.

advocating their protection since 2010 when he dived 100 metres (one hectometre) as part of Project Hector. “It’s really reached the eleventh hour for the Maui species. If nothing happens in the next year or two they will probably fall over the edge of a number they can’t recover from,” he says. Maui’s numbers have been reduced to where they are now through by-catch from fishing, trawling and gill net setting in their territory. “The problem is that the government has failed to put in place measures to protect them inside their territory – a pretty small strip of water down the west coast out to a depth contour of 100 metres. “For me it seems illogical – say we do render that species extinct and in 10 years you go out there and can’t find a single Maui dolphin, how does that look against NZ’s image of being a clean, green, eco-friendly country if we can’t even protect a species that lives in our own waters? “That effect on our image would impact tourism which is a multi-billion dollar industry as compared to fishing which, especially for that strip of coastal water, probably amounts to a tiny percentage compared to tourism.

“But more than that, it’s about trying to maintain biodiversity of our species. Shutting down a few businesses and trying to find jobs for a small number of people is the smallest price you This year is the free diving world championships could pay to protect native species.” in Honduras in August and this over record Despite being born in the UK, and now based in attempt is William’s priority right now. the Bahamas to be near Dean’s Blue Hole where “My main focus is to try and do well at world he trains, William still calls New Zealand home champs where it’s more about being consistent and he loves the al fresco uniqueness it offers. across all disciplines, so I’ll be training with fins “The bush, the mountains, the sea – I love this year.” getting back there and I love the wilderness of it. Issues | Marijuana

Weedonomics By Lydia Truesdale

In the previous issues of Canterbury Today and Auckland Today we began our review of the legal status of Class C drug marijuana. In this issue we look at the economic impact of legalisation worldwide and the predicted impact – good or bad if any – that marijuana would have on our economy were it decriminalised or legalised. The economic impact of legalisation in other countries The medical value of marijuana is being recognised by an increasing number of medical professionals and policy makers worldwide and the medicinal use of cannabis is now legal, to some degree, in at least 20 countries. “Many international markets – Colorado, Washington and Holland, to name but three – have shown that legalisation can result in huge tax boons,” writes NZIER principal economist, Peter Wilson. Figures from state agencies show that in 2014 and 2015 Colorado collected nearly $6 million in revenue. In 2016 the state surpassed $1 billion in legal cannabis sales after 10 months.

Use 2012/13: New Zealand Health Survey) – which gives some indication towards predicted legalised sales and tax revenue. New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) principal economist, Peter Wilson, concluded in his 61-2016 NZIER Insight report that “prohibition of marijuana, just like prohibition of alcohol before it, has been a costly failure”. “A better way of lowering harmful marijuana use would be legalisation, combined with heavy taxation, regulation and education. The result should be less use, considerable fiscal savings to the Government and the removal of a valuable source of revenue for criminals. “The New Zealand Treasury has calculated that a change in the legal status of marijuana could reap an additional $150 million in revenue and reduce spending on drug enforcement by around 40 percent ($180 million). From this, we can conclude that the cost of the current enforcement policy is over $300 million per year.” A marijuana-based economy in New Zealand could certainly be a pecuniary incubator. It would bridge our two most illustrious industries: tourism and agriculture. Dutch police estimate that 80 percent of production goes to foreign buyers (tourists), of which there are an estimated four million every year. Some even argue that a marijuana economy in New Zealand would better support our aunatural ‘clean, green’ image than dairying, whose run-off is perpetuating alarming levels of pollution in our waterways.

What are the experts saying? While in New Zealand to speak at a charity fundraiser, entrepreneur-extraordinaire Sir Richard Branson told Newshub journalist Samantha Hayes that New Zealand should swap cows for cannabis.

Washington collected a reported $67.5 million revenue in the first year following legalisation and expects this figure to surpass $1 billion by 2019. During the interview Sir Richard noted that we have the prime climatic conditions for growing In other states, Oregon reported almost $3.5 and argued that a shift of focus in our agricultural million in the first month of state revenues. sector would bring an abundance of benefits. California is believed to bring in between $59 million and $109 million in tax revenue each year, “We’ve done a lot of studies on the war on drugs and it’s been an abject failure, and what while Arizona sees about $2 million and New is absolutely clear to us, is that drugs should Mexico collects around $650,000. be decriminalised and people who have drug In Holland cannabis is one of the country’s problems should be helped,” he told Newshub. biggest industries. Dutch ‘coffee shops’ in 2008 generated $2 billion in gross sales, resulting in $4 million in tax revenue. Rates of sales tax differ between these markets but not one has reported a fiscal loss since legalising cannabis to whatever degree. The icing on the cake, perhaps, is the amount of jobs 'cannabis economies' can create to combat the rate of unemployment, not to mention using tax revenue for research, drug prevention, education and treatment, or wherever else in the economy it may be needed.

The likely economic impact of legalisation in New Zealand There is no guarantee that a marijuana economy in New Zealand would enjoy the same success as the international markets above. Currently marijuana usage in New Zealand sits at around 11 percent of adults aged 15 years and over – approximately 388,666 people (Cannabis 22 | June/July 2017    www.canterburytoday.co.nz

“The New Zealand Treasury has calculated that a change in the legal status of marijuana could reap an additional $150 million in revenue and reduce spending on drug enforcement by around 40 percent ($180 million). From this, we can conclude that the cost of the current enforcement policy is over $300 million per year.”

“You should legalise it, grow it, tax it, regulate it… I think that would be wonderful because obviously the amount of dairy cows that New Zealand has is damaging the rivers. If you could put some of that land over into growing cannabis it would be just as profitable for them, if not more profitable.”

“About 80 percent of the Government’s spending on tackling drugs goes to Police, courts and prisons. We have the balance wrong. It’s now time to re-focus Government’s efforts on drug prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation,” Bell said in an April press release.

One Kiwi capitalising on the marijuana movement is John Lord. He moved to Colorado and in 2009 established LivWell – now one of the largest legal marijuana dealers in the state that sells in excess of $80 million regulated product annually, employs approximately 500 staff and counts businessmen and retirees among its customers.

Poll after poll continues to show the majority of New Zealanders are now – historically they weren’t – in support of a cannabis law reform.

LivWell is believed to have driven the price of marijuana in Colorado down by 25 percent and driven street dealers out of the state. Drug Foundation executive director, Ross Bell, believes our current drug law is obsolete and he supports the 2011 Law Commission recommendation that the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 be repealed and replaced by a mandatory cautioning and health referral scheme.

For the first time there are multiple parties contesting the election who advocate for cannabis law reform (the Greens, Labour, the Maori Party, ACT, TOP, United Future and the Cannabis Party). So who are the naysayers and why? The Right Honourable Bill English told The AM Show in April that there’s already a “compassionate and legal” route for patients to get cannabis products if they need them. “The minister’s just changed the rules so that’s a little bit easier, with the Ministry of Health now approving it instead of each one going to the minister. As far as we can see, that’s going to work pretty well and we don’t want to take it any further,” the PM said at the time. Internationally, former commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection (2014-2017) and director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (2009-2014), Richard Gil Kerlikowske is perhaps the most outspoken marijuana prohibitioner. “Young people are getting the wrong message from the medical marijuana and legalisation campaigns,” he told USA Today. “If it’s continued to be talked about as a benign substance that has no ill effects, we’re doing a great disservice to young people by giving them that message.” Whether you’re in support of a law reform or not; in the spirit of societal, economic, cultural and human development, it’s hard to deny that marijuana makes a meritorious case for legal review. Convention centre designed to impress Christchurch’s new convention centre looks set to make its mark in more ways than one. The centre will be capable of hosting up to 2,000 delegates for a variety of national and international events. It will include a 1,400 delegate auditorium, a 3,600sqm exhibition hall and 1,600sqm of meeting rooms overlooking Victoria Square. “We want to create an attractive facility for Christchurch, that draws people towards the centre and its associated cafes and shops. The ‘River Walk’ on the south side will take people from Cathedral Square, through the centre precinct to the restored Victoria Square and the enhanced waterfront of the Otakaro/ Avon River Precinct,” says Otakaro chief executive, Albert Brantley. “Estimates put the direct economic benefit of the Convention Centre to the Canterbury region at $300m to $400m in its first eight years of operation,” Albert says. The main entrance to the centre opens out to Oxford Terrace and the Avon River and has been designed to reflect the fluid curves of Canterbury’s braided rivers. This gives visitors easy access to Te Papa Otakaro/Avon River Precinct and creates a space for civic powhiri and welcoming events. The Armagh and Colombo Street sides are straighter to reinforce the traditional edges of Victoria Square and Cathedral Square, and to tie in with the restored Lady Isaac building. The Colombo Street side will be lined with hospitality and retail outlets and space has been created for the potential construction of a hotel that would further increase the level of activity around Cathedral Square. Armagh Street will include areas for public use designed to encourage people to linger and enjoy the view of Victoria Square. Architects at Woods Bagot have worked on the design with Matapopore Charitable Trust and completion is scheduled for late 2019. Visit www.christchurchconventions.com

Hospitality | MCM Motel

The newest place in town The recent opening of MCM Motel in Christchurch is a welcome development, giving a boost to the city’s accommodation options. Following the earthquakes, places for overnight stays were limited, but with more developments opening up, accommodation is now back to about 90 percent of what it was before in Christchurch. More beds are needed, though, and the opening of the four and a half star MCM Motel brings an executive-style option to central Christchurch. The motel complex opened on April 7, 2017 and is modern, spacious and stylish. The complex has been developed by MCM-RBB Limited, with founder and project management, ,RBB Limited a family business run by husband and wife team Edward and Sharon Chan, with help from consultant James Butler.

“It is an exciting time for Christchurch and especially the central city and the areas around it. Over the next few months there will be about 14,000 office workers working in the central city.”

Originally from Malaysia, Edward and Sharon moved to Christchurch four years ago from Wellington. While the Chan's have been property developers for 30 years, MCM is their first motel. James has worked on many other motel developments, and advised the couple on the style of motel, being a premium product for corporate clients, families and tourists. Because of the couple’s religious beliefs, they had the site blessed by a Wellington pastor before construction began.

- Christchurch City Councillor, Deon Swiggs

The property has now been sold to local investors and the MCM Motel, owned by Sharon Chan and overseas business partner Max Shangkar, is running the business lease.

Getting taste buds tingling A Hillyers of Lincoln pie! The mere thought of the crisp pastry and succulent filling – no matter what flavour – is enough to set the taste buds tingling.

Hillyers have been baking their signature pies for 50 years now and that’s a truly impressive achievement.

The team at Hillyers say that it’s thanks to the loyalty of their customers, suppliers and staff that they have reached such a significant milestone, but that loyalty was only earned because of the exquisitely delicious homebaking that Hillyers are famous for. Hillyers of Lincoln was started by Bert and Irene Hillyer in 1967 as a small bakery in Lincoln, after Irene had been baking for the local bowling and tennis clubs. Her food became so popular that the local council told her she needed to set up commercial premises to continue with her baking. So that is exactly what the Hillyers did. Back then commercial baking was no easy task. All the pies were made by hand - as they

still are – and Bert would make half a tonne of pastry each day. Eighty hour weeks were the norm, a hard life, but one that the Hillyers found immensely rewarding. It was for her pie recipes that Irene became famous - pie recipes that continue to be very much a part of the Hillyer’s homebaking of today - and on which the bakery’s enduring reputation and longevity are based. At a time when only mince, bacon and egg or steak pies were common, Irene began experimenting with different flavours and combinations. The first gourmet flavour was steak and mushroom followed by steak and cheese, while further down the track the chicken, cranberry and brie pie was put on the menu. Fifty years later these flavours remain immensely popular and they have been joined by many others – steak, chicken and vegetarian. Hillyers also produce a range of slices and artisan breads.

Quality and consistency of ingredients and workmanship are at the heart of everything Hillyers produce – along with unfailingly scrumptious taste. It’s no wonder they have gained such a loyal following. On the occasion of their 50th anniversary, the team at Hillyers want to thank their customers, suppliers and staff because they know that without their support they would not have been so successful or be celebrating this birthday. Several of their staff have been with them for over 10 years and many customers for much longer. So here’s to the next 50 years Hillyers! CT

Hospitality | Festive NZ

Showing food at its best They say we eat with our eyes and no one understands that better than Christchurch-based pioneers of food display cabinetry, Festive NZ.

About Festive NZ

When James Anderson took ownership of Festive NZ in 2011, his background as a veterinarian may not have directly related to the food service or manufacturing industries but, instinctively and as a consumer, he knew improved food presentation was an opportunity the market craved. Patron’s today are busy and want cabinet food that is easily visible, instantly accessible and housed in something that is superiorly clean and hygienic. If this isn’t offered to them then chances are they’ll take their business elsewhere. Similarly, restaurateurs don’t have time or energy to waste and a functional and distinctive food display cabinet can drastically minimise daily food waste and put those dollars back into owners’ pockets.

Festive NZ is a supplier of distinctive food display cabinetry, manufactured in New Zealand, which boasts stylish design, robust build and reliable performance. Its range includes: • Counter top cabinetry • Floor standing cabinetry • Drop in cabinetry • Factory options • Accessories. The cabinets can come in a range of temperatures: • Bain-marie • Chilled • Cold deck • Heated • Hot deck. • Ambient Festive NZ cabinets meet all Australian and New Zealand electromagnetic emissions standards (C-tick) and are registered under the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for energy efficiency. The majority of Festive NZ chilled cabinets are designated Hi Energy Efficiency under MEPS, indicating low power utilisation.

Festive’s range of display cabinets provides each and every business with a solution that showcases its food at its best. From rural tea rooms on the main drag to some of Auckland’s most exclusive eateries, there’s no solution too big or small, unique or conventional. A specialised joinery service offering customised solutions designed to integrate with cabinets ensures those in the food service industry are able to maximise the functionality of their space and in turn, maximise their gains. James notes that Festive is heavily invested in research and development and continues to lead the industry with its innovative designs and technology that offer minimal frame and maximum glass for ultimate visual disclosure. Festive recently expanded into the Australian market and this successful growth is proof that Kiwi ingenuity continues to transcend borders. Its cabinets are now not only the preferred choice of food display solutions in New Zealand, but also throughout the Pacific.

A key factor driving Festive’s success is understanding the needs of the industry and the importance of having food display cabinets operable 24/7. In support of this, the company has a comprehensive support service run by a network of people committed to delivering excellence in food display solutions. In buying fromFestive you are buying confidently; assured with a two-year warranty that you’re investing in the highest quality cabinetry that has cleared robust quality controls. Focus | L & A Apparel and Monograms

Merger creates one-stop uniform and monogramming shop “We are stronger together to move into the future.” Brendan Laney, managing director of L & A Apparel and Monograms is talking about the merger of the former two businesses Laney Apparel and Arbi Monograms - into one company in a new and enlarged premises. “We have a superb facility now in Moncur Place, with space for all our staff and machinery, as well as a very spacious showroom where all our products can be displayed to best advantage,” he says. “It’s a totally relaxed environment for our clients to view our garments and to touch and feel the quality and the fabrics.” Laney Apparel had been supplying uniforms to corporates and sports teams for over 20 years, while Arbi Monograms had a 38-year history of embroidering monograms on to garments of all kinds.

The two companies had always had a synergistic relationship, with Laney Apparel having all their monogramming work carried out by Arbi Monograms. So the merger just seemed a natural progression. “We couldn’t be happier with the way everything has worked out. Already our range of products has increased and our team will be delighted to walk around the showroom with clients so they can see everything we offer.” What the company offers is indeed impressive. The word uniform simply doesn’t convey the variety of product and the range of clients provided for. Corporates can come here for impeccable suiting, business shirts and blouses. Or they may be looking for a more casual style for ‘casual Fridays’, the stunning merino polo shirts and T-shirts will fit the brief perfectly. Workwear is a speciality for L & A Apparel. It’s impossible to move around Christchurch without seeing the ubiquitous high-viz

orange polo shirt that is so much a part of the construction and rebuild scene in this city – as well as high-viz jackets, parkas and vests. Literally hundreds of these are dispatched from L & A Apparel on an almost daily basis. One recent order alone for Leigh’s Construction was for 750 polo shirts. Providing uniforms and equipment for sports clubs is fundamental to L & A Apparel’s operation. All types of sports from rugby, soccer, hockey and netball, to tennis, bowls and petanque can find the type of clothing they are looking for here. L & A Apparel are especially proud of their stylish Tsunami range of sports garments made out of eco-fit material – recycled plastic bottles and bamboo charcoal.

“It’s a totally relaxed environment for our clients to view our garments and to touch and feel the quality and the fabrics.” - Brendan Laney

Image and branding are important aspects of uniforms. Naturally L & A Apparel’s clients want to give themselves a unique identity through customising and personalising the garments they wear.

“But we can do more for sport clubs than just uniforms. We can save them a great deal of time and energy running around by supplying a full team kit of equipment and accessories as well, such as balls, tackle bags, even drink bottles. When we say we are a one stop shop we really are.”

Monogramming, patching, screen printing, laser etching and digital transfers are all part of the service provided by L & A Apparel.

The company has adapted and evolved over its 30-year history, enabling it to become one of New Zealand’s leading fresh and frozen pet food manufacturing companies. In 1987 farming was doing it pretty tough. The Gawn family were receiving virtually nothing for their cull stock and, aware of many other farmers in their position, they knew there had to be a way of receiving better returns. They established NZ Pet Foods from their North Otago farm to offer “good, hearty dog tucker”, with the original offering being a 4kg minced meat roll in its raw, frozen state. Farmers in the district found this an easy and affordable way to provide their working dogs a high quality, high fat and high energy diet. “There is proven evidence that providing a raw component to a pet’s diet assists in giving them the natural balance to their feeding needs,” Russell Gawn says. “In my opinion, pets are no different to us and I believe that they enjoy and benefit from a varied and balanced diet as we do.” Demand called and NZ Pet Foods answered by expanding its operation and moving the business to South Canterbury in 2001.

Focus | Ferrymead

Ferrymead bounces back into action Residents and business owners of Ferrymead, Christchurch, are the perfect example of Cantabrian’s strength and resilience. Due to its location on the Avon Heathcote Estuary, when the earthquakes hit, Ferrymead was hit hard. But true to the saying ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ Ferrymead has bounced back with a vengeance and is now a force to be reckoned with. National MP Tutehounuku (Nuk) Korako says the business owners in Ferrymead are proud of how far it has come and are enthusiastic about the developments in the area. Walk into any store and you are greeted with a smile, businesses in Ferrymead are proud to be there. “They’re all very passionate about Ferrymead,” Nuk says.

Nuk himself couldn’t think of a better location for his office to be planted and can be found at the heart of Ferrymead Central. Though its location may have been a hindrance during the earthquakes, after an extensive makeover and investments in recent years, its location only adds to its appeal. Ferrymead Central is perfectly situated minutes from Sumner and Redcliffs and only a short drive to the four avenues. More than 35,000 cars pass through Ferrymead every day from the neighbouring suburbs to get into the city and then back again, Nuk says. Many businesses have taken advantage of its location on the main drag, with 40 new commercial units almost completely tenanted Ferrymead’s post-quake appearance is more vibrant than its original state. Nuk speaks with pure enthusiasm when he describes just how far Ferrymead has come in the past six years. “Ferrymead has everything you need now, from restaurants to all the social services and manufacturing services there’s even a Crown office here.”

Focus | Sustainable Living

Why sustainable building solutions make sense There are lots of things to consider when planning your new home or major renovation and one area rightfully deserving to be high on the list is sustainable building solutions. Incorporating good environmental design before you commence a project is vitally important for the conservation and welfare of our limited natural resources, can save you money in the long run and can avoid costly alterations later on.

Many take out countries are now requesting that homes be officially certified before they can be bought or sold, and it is expected that Homestar will be one of the biggest changes to the New Zealand residential market in years to come.

Homestar is the official rating and certification programme, operated by the New Zealand Green Building Council, that evaluates the environmental attributes of New Zealand’s stand-alone homes in terms of energy, health and comfort, water, waste and more.

Homestar looks at many aspects of environmental and social sustainability within a home. It’s not all just about energy performance, although of course energy efficiency is one of the more heavy weighted section in the assessment programme.

The rating is on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being very poor and 10 being world excellence). Many of the more problematic old kiwi homes sit in the 2-3 star region - so there is plenty of room for improvement. With the introduction of a rating system homeowners are able to use Homestar to independently demonstrate the true value of their home. As the market develops and demand increases, homes with a higher star rating will be able to sell for more money.

The Homestar assessment framework is divided into seven main sections. A quick overview of the framework can be:

Energy, health and comfort Looking into energy efficiency throughout the house (space and water heating, whiteware, lighting and renewable energy), moisture control, noise control and useability for disabled people.

Wastewater solutions Having undergone continued expansion in production on site due to growing interest in their products, Hellers’ existing wastewater system had come under increasing pressure, explains Apex Environmental’s founding director and general manager, Dr Steve Kroening. Apex was engaged to redesign and upgrade the whole system to ensure consent compliance for their discharge.

In order to achieve that Apex created flexible connections between the large tank and the plant to ensure functionality.

No stranger to complicated projects, Apex Environmental knew from the beginning that the Hellers’ project would be like none other.

Another connection to consider was the underground pipe that connects the plant to the council’s plant.

Put simply, Apex had to install a new system with a small footprint to remove fats and solids from the wastewater before it is discharged to the council’s treatment plant.

In order to connect the new system to the council treatment plant, they had to intercept the existing pipeline without disrupting Hellers’ production.

“We were dealing with very limited available space, so we had to be quite innovative in finding a solution to operate at that scale,” Steve says.

“We only had one window of opportunity to get it done,” Steve says. “A lot of careful planning went in to that tie-in to enable the factory to continue functioning.”

“We installed two Aerofloats, which is a type of DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation unit). They have a unique configuration that not only makes them compact, but also helps to keep costs down.”

It’s those challenges within each project that the team at Apex Environmental enjoy getting their heads around.

Aerofloats are significantly smaller than regular DAF’s, which makes them an ideal solution for sites like Hellers.

The Hellers' project is a perfect example that no two installations are ever the same. Apex Environmental understand the individual nature of industrial waste streams and therefore design accordingly.

Though the space they had to work with was limited, the treatment tank that stores wastewater Thanks to their approach and their ability to before treatment is anything but limited in size. adapt to new challenges the Hellers' project is With a volume of 500,000L, at full capacity the another job well done. Agribusiness | Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables

Absolutely healthy and simply delicious Five generations of vegetable growing within the Oakley family means Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables has a huge wealth of knowledge to ensure consumers eat only the best quality produce, every single day. Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables was established in 2002 by owner Robin Oakley, who is a fifth-generation vegetable grower. “I started on my father’s farm; he was growing potatoes and I got involved in growing other vegetable lines as well,” he says. “When I set up my own company I moved to Southbridge and focused on growing broccoli, cabbage, pumpkin, cauliflowers and potatoes.”

– Robin Oakley with some of Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables’ broccoli

Today, Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables grows potatoes, broccoli, beetroot and pumpkin, supplying year-round to Foodstuffs for supply within its supermarket brands, Four Square, New World and Pak ‘n Save.

Simply delicious Oakleys’ main product is washed potatoes, with its most popular product being its Baby Golden Gourmet potatoes. “Our Golden Gourmet potatoes have a slightly faster cooking time than other varieties,” Robin says. “In the taste tests we’ve done, they always come out best. They’re a nice textured potato.”

Harmans are proud to be associated with Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables

Oakleys also supplies Purple Heart potatoes, which feature a deep purple skin and purple-andwhite-marbled flesh. “Most of our potatoes stay within the domestic market, although we do send some to Fiji, New Caledonia and Singapore. We do a lot of washed, pre-packed potatoes for New World, Four Square and Pak ‘n Save.” Broccoli is another big product for Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables, which operates two production sites for the crop and supplies it yearround to Foodstuffs. Pumpkin is grown in Southbridge and is an annual crop, planted in the spring and harvested in the autumn.

- Oakleys provides consumers with consistency of product, every week of the year

Oakleys harvests fresh beetroot regularly and has multiple plantings throughout the year to ensure a year-round supply. “We now grow candy beetroot, which we supply in its own 800g packaging. “Our candy beetroot is a unique, particularly sweet variety of chioggia beetroot; delicious raw, and it looks beautiful with its concentric rings of pink and white. They’re ideal for roasting.” Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables has been awarded the prestigious Business of the Year Award for the Selwyn District. This award is only awarded every two years to a business in the community who shows outstanding success, growth, stability, strength in business practices and staff management. It operates its own potato washing and packing facility on site in Southbridge, where it also washes and packs potatoes supplied by other growers.

The company aims to do what a home vegetable grower would do, just on a commercial scale. “We try to do what people do in their home vegetable garden; we’re very much about longterm sustainability. We look after our soil quality and we grow the product in the best way we can,” Robin says. “We don’t put any inputs in that aren’t necessary and food safety is a big thing for us. We do crop rotations to get the best outcome of quality and yield.” Oakleys provides consumers with consistency of product, every week of the year. Exteriors fit for any time of the year Summer may be over but that shouldn’t mean you lock yourself indoors. Getting outside is good for the soul, so instead of shutting the doors, let Xteriorscapes create the perfect outdoor space for you to enjoy year-round. Whatever you have envisioned for your outdoors, whether it be your commercial space or in your own backyard, Xteriorscapes can provide that for you. Owner Hayden Stark says there is no ‘one size fits all solution’ to landscaping. “All of our clients have different requirements, different styles, different budgets, and more importantly each site is different, and although some of the design principles are similar, (maximising the sun, protection of prevailing winds, seamless flow etc.) the execution is varied to suit specific site conditions, sizes and client's tastes.”

With that in mind; the most important thing to consider, when starting on a new project, is the individual client. Xteriorscapes goes the extra mile ensuring you’re involved every step of the way. “We go above and beyond for clients and can alter our scope of works during the design process to suit their changing needs. “A valuable design option that we offer is the development of 3D images. This both assists us in making design decisions during the design process, and is extremely beneficial for the client to visualise the design with 3D images and get a sense of scale and space, especially if they struggle to read a plan,” Hayden says. After the design stage, Xteriorscapes offer a full project management service, guaranteeing only trusted contractors to do the job. The size of an area is no hindrance - the team can tackle it all. Xteriorscapes can create an amazing practical space in the smallest backyard and can transform an entire subdivision from dust to lush.

Property & Construction | Hillview Construction

The hillside specialists The stunning house sits very high up on Mt Pleasant. The view from the huge floor-toceiling windows of its lounge out to sea, across to the city and further to the Kaikoura ranges, is breathtaking. This is the house that Shaun Campbell of Hillview Construction built for himself, his wife Kate and their children. “We built the house for us to live in, but also as a private showhome so potential clients can see just what is possible in a house built on a hill-site. Coll Architecture designed an exquisite house, but it also functions really well as a family home.

That is the message we want to convey – it is possible to have both beauty and functionality.” Hillview Construction are specialists in the niche market of building architecturally-designed houses in Christchurch’s hill suburbs.

“We’ve built on virtually every hill in the city – Mt Pleasant, Richmond, Cashmere, Kennedy’s Bush, Scarborough. Since I set up the company in 2008 we’ve worked on over 20 hill-site houses – as well as probably just as many architecturally-designed homes on the flat.” Shaun learned his trade with another specialist hill-site builder with whom he went into partnership for six years before establishing Hillview Construction.

“Building on hill sites requires an extra level of expertise and experience. There are so many additional factors to deal with than you find when building on the flat – engineering issues, wind levels, access, which products are appropriate for the environment – just to list a few. “Every site is different and brings its own challenges – and ultimately satisfaction once a build is completed and the clients are happy.” Shaun recalls one particular build where access was the main issue. “It was an architect’s own house – a tricky tilt panel house. The access was so difficult that we couldn’t bring the panels on to the site. We actually had to cast them at the site itself.

“There have also been other builds on steep sites with multi-level houses where we have had to build from the bottom level up, because once each level was completed we couldn’t get back to the bottom!” From the perspective of Hillview Construction, architecturally-designed houses are extremely interesting to work on, not only because of their external features but also because of the detailing that is required internally. “Clients expect high-end internal finishes and fixtures in these types of houses. To achieve this we need to have sub-contractors who understand the importance of flawless finishes and who have the ability to work with innovative and sometimes unusual designs and materials.”

The Campbell’s own house is a superb illustration of Hillview Construction’s dedication to excellence in workmanship. With four bedrooms, two living rooms and two bathrooms, this spacious home is striking externally with its cedar features and basalt stone and aerated concrete-clad walls. Once you are inside the front door, the floating staircase is definitely eye-catching, while the negative detailing of the skirtings and trims all contribute to a seamless flow. “The joinery has been specially designed and built to a very high standard. The lighting and sound system fixtures are top spec as is the inslab underfloor heating. “The internal window glazing gives the impression of making the house look bigger and grander than its actual size. The full-height doors have a similar effect.

"This is a modern, contemporary house, but it’s also low maintenance and very liveable.” The Campbell’s house took 12 months to build. Other hill-site builds may need longer depending on their size and complexity. It takes a building company with passion, patience and consummate skill to commit that amount of time to a project. Hillview Construction is such a company. Property & Construction | Nor West Contracting The ‘Complete Package’ Additionally, Nor West offers a wide range of services for both the commercial and residential sectors. Their experience in the residential sector has shown that builders don’t want to be dealing with, and organising, a wide range of subbies – they want to get on with what they love – building, so Nor West developed the ‘Complete Package’ which offers the builder one company that provides earthworks, concrete foundations, drainage, services installation and landscaping solutions in one package. Business partner and earthworks manager, Peter Tangney says another key to their success is bringing key services in-house rather than using subbies. “This allows us to be able to control quality and programme, and thus further enhance what we can offer our clients,” he says.

tradesmen and a designer. He says having a designer on the team is one of the things that makes Smith and Sons Blenheim stand out from other building companies in the area.

Once the client has approved the design and budget, Smith and Sons Blenheim complete the plans and engineer’s drawings, and acquire all council and city approvals.

“We’re all passionate about the work we do and take pride in every job, whether it’s a small renovation or a major extension.” CT

“We can provide the whole package, from start to finish, including the full design process and planning process. This makes building much easier for the client as they only have to deal with us, not a lot of other companies.”

To minimise stress and interruption for the client, a schedule is drawn up that works around the clients’ lifestyle as much as possible.

He says the designer is expert at listening to clients and turning their concepts into reality, even when those concepts are little more than a few scribbled down ideas. The plans will be fully costed out, and Smith and Sons Blenheim pride themselves in coming in on budget.

During the building process the client knows they only have to deal with one point of contact, and Daniel ensures the client is kept up to date with all aspects of the built. He says it is the level of service provided by the entire team at Smith and Sons Blenheim that has resulted in the company working on homes throughout the Marlborough area.

From road building, sub-divisions, drain laying, service trenching, water-line and sewerage construction to asphalting of driveways, hardstands and carparks, along with associated kerbing and earthworks - Civil and Land has the people and the gear. The company also specialises in investigations, assessments and problem solving. Since its foundation as Amberley Plumbing and Drainage by owner Paul Robertson more than 40 years ago, Civil and Land Construction has been the go-to mid-size North Canterbury contractor for the most demanding jobs in the sector.

These are the jobs where the client has particular needs that must be taken into account in the construction process, and nowhere are those needs more paramount than in the region’s school yards. Under Ministry of Education contracts, Civil and Land has carried out major infrastructure builds and repairs at around 100 schools in Christchurch and North Canterbury, where construction work has to be fitted in and around the overriding needs of students and staff. Among them has been Halswell Residential College, where Civil and Land was tasked with removing the existing drainage system and installing water, storm water and sewerage reticulation for new buildings.

YOUR DRAINAGE SERVICE EXPERTS Wallace Blocked Drains Ltd are a locally owned and operated business straight out of Christchurch. As a family run business, the Wallace’s (Peter, Vicki, James and Paige) are dedicated to providing fantastic service and customer satisfaction. Wallace Blocked Drains Ltd has a vast network of very reliable local and affordable drainlayers who are well equipped and have years of experience and training, and are not afraid of hard work. We offer a 24 hour a day call out service for emergencies, so don’t hesitate to call day or night and one of our professional team members can assist. Services we provide: • Unblocking/cleaning sewer, stormwater drains and blocked toilets • CCTV inspections and reporting including EQC investigations • Waterblasting - paths, walls, driveways • Septic tank issues • Effluent line problems (rural sector/ dairy farms). Blocked Sewer / Stormwater / Toilets / Effluent Lines We can clear your blocked drains with ease using our purpose built waterblasting units. From blocked kitchen gully traps, blocked toilets,

septic tanks, or if you have tree root problems, we can clear and cut these using various rotary nozzles coupled with high pressure, high volume water. The waterblast pumps we use are an eight cylinder Harben pump which we have imported from the UK. This pump, along with its many attributes, gives us the ability to unblock large and long effluent lines generally found on dairy farms. We attach the waterblast hose from our pump and connect to the blocked effluent line, and use the waterblaster to pump pressure in the line until the line clears - this method is very quick and extremely successful, eliminating the need for digging in most cases. CCTV Inspections Televising your sewer and stormwater drains to locate and check the condition is highly recommended since the earthquakes. It is also a good idea to complete a CCTV inspection before any new driveways/paths etc. are laid to check that the drains are in good order. CCTV inspections are ideal if you are experiencing ongoing blockages due to tree root infiltration or suspected damaged pipes. The company has invested in state of the art CCTV equipment with the best in diagnostic and fault finding technology.

Property & Construction | Tomkies Construction

Building new homes the way you want them Tomkies Construction is a small building company based in Canterbury focused on residential new builds.

The client’s ideas and thoughts are combined with the builder’s expertise and knowledge, to make the build experience enjoyable.

Every client of Tomkies Construction receives the personal approach and this ensures a highquality home is created every time.

A recent 300sqm home completed in the Cashmere Hills on a challenging site with limited space displays the high-quality approach taken by the company.

Director and owner Mark Tomkies has over 15 years’ experience in the building industry with time spent in a number of different areas including residential, architectural and commercial, with three years helping with the Canterbury rebuild. Mark is hands-on with the build of each home to ensure that every house is built to be your home and not just another number. “We recognise that building a new home is a major financial and emotional investment,” he says. “We offer design and build services and work with you to ensure a trusting relationship and strive to make your building experience enjoyable, delivering high quality homes every time.”

“We also offer turn-key packages, including full landscaping and window coverings. You can be involved every step of the way, or let us build your dreams and move in when it’s ready.”

It was built using plastered blockwork on the lower level and lightweight Rockcote Integra panels on the upper level. Ground works included removing over 500 tonnes of rock to make way for the lower level and it took close to eight months of work before this beautiful home rose out of the hillside giving way to the great views of the city.

Fixed price contracts The company offers a fixed price contract to provide greater security. “At Tomkies Construction we will work with you to design a home that has the fit-out options you desire. This then enables us to offer you a fixed price contract for your new home, so you know exactly what to expect with no surprises."

Property & Construction | Dynamic Drainage and Excavation

Dynamic building site solutions One might not necessarily associate the word “dynamic” with drainage solutions. But that word is eminently suitable when applied to the drainlaying company, Dynamic Drainage and Excavation Limited, founded in 2007 by Grant Wooster. On meeting Grant you immediately sense that he is a man with drive and dynamism – someone who is intent on steering his company to be the very best it can be through an emphasis on quality workmanship, cost effectiveness and sound, efficient processes. “After gaining my drainlaying qualification and with several years of experience working for other companies under my belt, I decided it was time to have a crack at being my own boss,” Grant says.

“We remain extremely flexible and are always happy to talk through other choices and costs as the build progresses, should you wish to make any changes.” A qualified interior designer is available to assist in selecting all the colours for your new home and with a landscaping team at hand, all you need to do is move in. The company has built strong relationships with its subcontractors and suppliers and uses only reputable products, ensuring your home is built to a superior standard. As a Registered Master Builder, Tomkies Construction offers its clients a 10-year Master Build Guarantee on residential work. This offers peace of mind that your new home has been built by skilled professionals, who are also Licensed Building Practitioners.

“At Tomkies Construction we pride ourselves on being focused on quality at every stage of your build, being flexible and with a personal approach to make the building process as stress free and smooth as possible.” CT Tomkies Construction PO Box 303 Rangiora 7440 027 465 7286 tomkiesconstruction@gmail.com www.tomkiesconstruction.co.nz

Working from home, Grant started out with one digger and one truck. Now 10 years later and testament to the success of his work ethic, the company has some 14 staff, seven diggers and 10 trucks, as well as an impressive new purpose-built facility in the Izone Business Park at Rolleston. “I believe our greatest strength is our ability to get in, get the job done and get out again, causing as little disturbance to other onsite operations as possible. “We recognise that excavation work and drainlaying can be disruptive and we’re committed to completing our tasks in the quickest, most efficient manner possible.”

Dynamic Drainage has expertise and experience in all aspects of drainage from domestic – both new housing and alterations – to light commercial and the installation of septic tank systems on lifestyle blocks. They are trusted sub-contractors to a number of high-profile housing companies and they work Canterbury-wide from Hanmer Springs to Timaru. “With four crews operating throughout Christchurch and across the wider Canterbury region, we have the practical skills and the capacity to handle any drainage project, regardless of size, scope or complexity.” Dynamic Drainage has invested considerable capital to ensure its crews can operate with the very best tools and resources available. “We utilise quality equipment and this, along with the considerable experience of our professional team, enables us to complete each project in the shortest possible time. “I have no hesitation in saying that we can complete most jobs more quickly than others in the industry, meaning less down-time for the other trades on site. This is crucial for commercial projects with their emphasis on time-frames, deadlines and budgets.” CT

Property & Construction | Builders Inc

Architectural build and renovations specialists Builders Inc Ltd has a huge wealth of experience to offer clients wanting to build an architectural home, or undertake a high-quality renovation or extension to their existing home. Owner Kit Hollis has been in the industry since 1981 and has been running his own business since 2003, focusing on the new home, renovation and alteration markets. Builders Inc Ltd enjoys building and/or renovating interesting, sometimes out of the ordinary, homes; working with clients to produce something special. “We enjoy the challenge that comes with building homes such as hillside projects, new architectural homes and historical restoration work,” Kit says. Builders Inc Ltd works closely with several leading Christchurch architects, including Maguire and Harford, and is currently building a home for director Ross Maguire.

Focus on renovations and alterations Builders Inc undertakes high-quality renovations and alterations, as well as restorations of period homes, something Kit has considerable knowledge of. “I worked for a builder in London for several years and we did a lot of high-end restoration work there,” he says.

“If you’re genuinely interested in the job, the clients pick up on that straight away. It can take time to gain a client’s confidence, but once they know you are excited about their project, you achieve a good relationship with the homeowner.” - Kit Hollis

“There’s not a lot of that work here in Christchurch, but once I started out on my own things developed within the alteration market, and we’ve done a few restorations as well.”

A trustworthy building company The company employs a small team who work closely with their clients and know the importance of building client confidence. “An important part of projects is good communication with clients, which I’m happy to say is a strength within my team, whether we’re working on a $150,000 alteration or a $1 million new home.

“If you’re genuinely interested in the job, the clients pick up on that straight away. It can take time to gain a client’s confidence, but once they know you are excited about their project, you achieve a good relationship with the homeowner. “Keeping that client confidence is the key and it all comes back to good workmanship. If you are able to achieve good workmanship, all the other things tend to fall into place.”

Property & Construction | Wildwood Homes

A solid, simple and quick build Wildwood Homes is celebrating 15 years of designing and building quality timber homes for clients throughout Canterbury and the West Coast. Director Andrew Roxburgh says the company has seen substantial growth and developments, over those 15 years. “Originally we were building with small, ready-clad panels. The system then progressed to large, six metre long panels that would be craned into place.

Trusted subcontractors It’s a team effort at Builders Inc Ltd, which includes the great subcontractors who do their part to ensure every job is a success. Kit Hollis says he’s been employing his team of subcontractors for many years and has great faith in their abilities and commitment. These subcontractors include Whitehead Plumbing and Gas, Stewart Harrison Quantity Surveyors, Dunrite Drainage and Landscapes, National Decorators and David Moot Electrical. “Because we use them over and over, we get good service,” Kit says. “We work as a team with our subcontractors and have built good relationships with them over time. We understand how each subcontractor operates

“Keeping that client confidence is the key and it all comes back to good workmanship. If you are able to achieve good workmanship, all the other things tend to fall into place.”

While the company primarily builds in Canterbury and the West Coast, they can supply ‘flat pack’ houses to local builders in other areas. Andrew says as the homes are relatively simple to construct they shouldn’t present any problems for another tradesman.

Home constructed in few weeks Andrew says there are many advantages to choosing a new home or cottage built by Wildwood Homes, but one of the main ones is speed. From design to construction can be a matter of weeks. “Our houses are very quickly built using efficient computerised systems, reduced material wastage and keeping labour costs down,” he says

and work well together to deliver a great end result for the client, which in turn gives us a high level of work satisfaction.” Using his trusted pool of reliable subcontractors means problems and mistakes are less likely to happen. However, while errors do occasionally occur, Kit says the most important thing is how you deal with them. “Things do go wrong occasionally, but it’s how you fix those things that count, and that’s why it’s important to use the right people,” he says. “I really appreciate the guys I’ve got working on site and the clients who first came to me years ago, when I was just starting out on my own, many of whom have become repeat clients and have referred us for many further contracts.” CT Builders Inc Ltd (03) 348 1778 027 414 4433 info@buildersinc.co.nz

“Now the pre-framed walls are ply clad completely, then the chosen cladding or finish applied. Using ply all round helps create a much stronger and durable home, especially needed in the recent unstable circumstances.”

“Most of our homes are supplied with ready framed walls. With jigs and precision cutting machinery the walls are accurate with clean lines, and of course, very quickly assembled.” He says because the homes are built on site there are no expensive delivery costs.

Variety of homes to suit everyone From multi-roomed homes for a large family to a single bedroom bach, Wildwood Homes builds houses to suit all needs. Many people wanting a granny flat or secondary dwelling have also taken advantage of Wildwood Homes’ two to three bedroom unit plan. At 74.4

square metres this plan is just under the 75 square metre restriction that many councils use. All Wildwood Homes’ standard plans can be adjusted, or the team can work off the client’s plans. The company has a variety of claddings, but other options can also be considered.

“Our houses are very quickly built using efficient computerised systems, reduced material wastage and keeping labour costs down.” - Andrew Roxburgh

Cladding options Pre-primed ‘bevel-back’ weatherboard: A long-standing Kiwi favourite, these boards are primed and undercoated. Pre-primed is available in 140mm width board or the more imposing 180mm board. Ply and batten: This band-sawn ply is complemented with rough finish battens to give a traditional ‘board and batten’ appearance. Other cladding options available include brick, Colorsteel, Shadowclad, and Linea. As all the panels are ready clad in Ecoply, they provide a strong initial build. Claddings such as brick can be added afterwards, taking advantage of the fast build system with the main structure. Andrew says he’s proud of all that Wildwood Homes has achieved over the last 15 years and they look forward to many more years of building good solid homes for Kiwi families. Property & Construction | Keystone Construction

Custom build specialists While for most in the construction industry work may be drying up, for Keystone Construction it’s just beginning. Managing director Tim Nugteren says he’s worked hard to get Keystone Construction in the position that it’s in today. “I decided not to get involved in any EQC or insurance work, which was a hard decision to make because there was a lot to be made there, but because of my philosophy on building relationships, I didn’t see it as something that would work out for me in the long run.” Instead Tim got started on the leg work necessary to break in to a different type of market and it’s definitely paying off.

Keystone Construction focuses on architecturally designed renovations and new home builds, and Tim project manages every job. “I’m very fussy,” Tim laughs. “I became a builder because I love building, if I wanted to work in an office I would have got an office job. I may not always be picking up tools, but I’m always amongst it.” The clients enjoy the added personal touch as well, which includes a bottle of wine and Keystone Construction-labelled chocolates upon completion Tim enjoys being part of every piece of the project. He’s there right from pricing the job through to handing over the keys. “Being there enables me to ensure a quality job is being done.” And considering the complexity of some of the jobs they undertake you can see why he wants to be a part of it.

Getting drainage flowing right “Flo-Rite” is a clever, eye-catching name for a drainage company.

“We have all the advanced equipment and technology it’s possible to have for this industry. This means we can give top quality service that our clients can rely on.”

That same innovation, coupled with quality and high standards are hallmarks of the company established back in 2003 by John Cooper. John studied automotive (mechanical) engineering. As a skilled welder he found work in the drainage industry and trained in drainage and maintenance for over 10 years before going out on his own. John says his nearly 15 year old business is now very much a family affair with his wife, son, daughter and other relatives all involved. “Keeping it all in the family enables us to emphasise values that are important to us - such as integrity and excellence, as well as trust and good relationships with clients.” John began Flo-Rite as a one-man band with a “wee” digger and a “wee” truck. “That truck is still giving us great service all these years later. But it wasn’t long at all before my business was expanding and needed more staff and more equipment. Things took off much

quicker than I anticipated, because in the early 2000s there was a lot of building work happening.” Since that time Flo-Rite Drainage has continued to go from strength to strength. With five depots located from Central Otago north to Fairlie, the company offers a wide range of services, including civil construction, landscaping, road construction and maintenance, water and drainage, asphalt and chipsealing, cable and pipe location. Business development manager, Linton Clarke says a key strength of the company is that it offers a complete range of work. “People like us because we can control the work from stage one right through to the end. “We can do the services installation, site works, the road construction and the surfacing. Other companies sometimes subcontract those components out. They have to get those ducks all lined up so there’s a sequence to it. It can prove be disjointed and frustrating, and end up taking longer and costing the client more.” However, Whitestone Contracting can control all aspects of the work internally, saving clients time and money. “We pride ourselves on doing the job right, quality work, delivering on time and not taking on too much and over committing.”

Linton says the company has been involved in The Cairns and Lochinver subdivisions for the past few years, and is now beginning work on the new Riverside residential development for Lake Tekapo Enterprises. “Riverside is a new subdivision and we’ve just started the earthworks component of that,” he says. “The Cairns and Lochinver are essentially completed. They’ve been stage developments and we’ve done all the civil works, including the earthworks, services such as power, drainage, stormwater and wastewater." Property & Construction | Yellow River Construction

A commitment to quality Yellow River Construction can proudly say it has achieved a 100 percent satisfaction rate over the many years it has been building homes for Kiwi families. “We’re very proud of our reputation,” says owner Ricky Wang. “Almost all of our work comes from word-ofmouth referral and return clients, and we have the evidence and feedback to back up our claim of 100 percent satisfaction.” The company focuses primarily on building medium level homes, although they also build the occasional high-end home, and do some light commercial work.

Along with the superior workmanship, Ricky says Yellow River Construction’s clients have said that they appreciate the company’s ability to provide a total package, from design through to the final completion. “In some of the smaller companies the clients have to go to different companies to get their designs or to use sub-contactors, but we have it all.” The team at Yellow River Construction includes two designers, a project manager, and qualified tradesmen. Ricky himself is also a qualified carpenter and builder. Customers have the option of selecting one of Yellow River’s standard plans. They can choose to use a standard plan with modifications to suit their needs, or they can have an individual plan designed for them. All workmanship is fully guaranteed and Ricky says Yellow River is one of the few Canterbury companies to provide a 24 month maintenance warranty, which is 12 months longer than most standard warranties.

“We provide very, very good quality workmanship and service, but without the skyrocketing prices, and our customers’ feedback is that they’re getting value for their money.” - Ricky Wang

“Not only that, but our extended cover is on everything in the house, apart from damage by the client. That covers everything, down to the light bulbs, so if your light bulb blows we will fix it.” Ricky says they can offer this level of coverage as they are confident that their workmanship is always of the highest possible standard.

He says they also come back and check everything is all right three to six months after the build is finished, and should there be anything wrong, they will put it right. Despite this level of service, Ricky says they have managed to remain competitive with pricing. “We provide very, very good quality workmanship and service, but without the skyrocketing prices, and our customers’ feedback is that they’re getting value for their money.” He says the company has built countless homes throughout Christchurch. They also have a commitment to Christchurch in the form of community service. “We are regular contributors to worthy causes such as the Child Cancer Foundation, and are proud of the public service we perform.” CT Yellow River Construction Unit 6, 1 Stark Drive, Wigram, Christchurch.
