What’s this? Is this a book?
No, it’s a pencil.

That’s a chair. And that’s a schoolbag.

One day Nieves and Lenny are very good friends, they walk home together after school everyday. One day Lenny asks, “Nieves my friend, what do you do in one entire day?�

Nieves says, “Well, I wake up…
... and I have breakfast with my mom and my dad, my brother and my sister. Then, we go to school.” 9
“I play with my cat and my dog when I’m back from school in the afternoon. Then, I play football with my brother and sister. My dog and my cat are there too.

I watch TV with my sister and my brother. The cat is there too.�

“I brush my teeth with my dad.
I go to bed and read a book with my mom.
Then I sleep with my cat. And what do you do?”

Lenny says, “Well, I wake up and have breakfast just like you do.�

“Then I walk to school and eat a little bit more too!

At home I play with my cat, and we both eat, eat and eat more honey too!� 15
ON THE PLAYGROUND

Nieves, Víctor and Lenny are out on the playground having fun. Lenny says, “It’s warm and sunny. It’s a nice day to be outside.”

It’s warm and sunny. Not cloudy and rainy. It’s warm and sunny, not cold and windy. They are out on the playground having fun. Nieves says, “Look at me. I can swing. I can swing really high.” She asks Víctor, “Can you swing?” He says, “No, I can’t, but I can run really fast.”

It’s warm and sunny. Nieves, Víctor and Lenny are out on the playground having fun. Víctor asks Lenny, “Hey Lenny, I wonder, can bears fly?” Lenny says, “No, bears can’t fly.”

Then, Víctor and Nieves ask Lenny, “Can you sing?” Lenny says, “Yes, I can sing. Can you?” Víctor and Nieves say, “Yes, we can.”

Suddenly, it gets cold, cloudy and windy. They put on their sweaters and their hats. 21
Then, they go back inside and drink hot cocoa.

Happy Birthday, Nieves! One special day, Nieves wakes up and says, “Yay! Today is my birthday! I like my birthday! I really, really do!”

And so, she invites all her friends to tea.
Nieves calls Víctor. Nieves calls Carlos. Nieves calls Lenny and Alicia on the phone, “Hi, Víctor. Hello, Carlos. Lenny and Alicia, hello. Come to my birthday, please, please do. We will play and eat cake too.” 25
They all come. VĂctor and Lenny come. Alicia and Carlos come. And, of course, Mom and Dad and Sister and Brother are there too. 26
There are balloons and birthday hats. There is food on the table. Cupcakes, carrots, celery and funny candy bats. They all eat. “I like cupcakes. I like carrots, but I don’t like the funny candy bats,” says Nieves. Víctor says, “I like carrots, I don’t like celery but I like the funny candy bats.” Carlos says, “And I really like these birthday hats!”

They sing happy birthday. Nieves blows out the candles.

And they all eat some cake. “Yummy yum yum. I like cake,” Lenny says.

Then, Nieves opens her presents. And, oh! What does she get? She gets a yo-yo, a ball, an action figure and a doll. So many toys and she likes them all. 30
She thanks her friends, but now it’s getting late. It’s time for bed, and so she says, “Bye-bye, Lenny. Bye-bye, Víctor. Bye-bye, Carlos and Alicia.” And she kisses them all goodbye.
