Explore the area by cycling

Get to know the villages, countryside, historical sites, and the beautiful nature of the Lahti region by cycling. You can combine the trip with either a pre-planned delicacy route or stop at one of the region's numerous cafes or restaurants.

AROUND LAKE VESIJÄRVI (80 km) is a classic route that cycling enthusiasts ride several times a summer. It's best to start in the morning and take breaks for rest and refueling. The route can be completed in one day even by less experienced cyclists.

The TOUR OF HOLLOLA CHURCH (37 km) goes around the historic medieval church and offers an opportunity to explore the village's cultural sites at the same time. The route is suitable for anyone who appreciates local history and natural beauty. It's a good idea to take a break at the village kiosk.

TOUR D’IMMILÄ (65 km) runs through the region's idyllic countryside landscapes. Along the route, there are several swimming spots such as Lake Sylvöjärvi in Uusikylä and Iso-Kukkanen at Pajulahti Sports Institute. The idyllic summer cafe at Immilä Mill is worth a break.

TOUR DE VÄÄKSY (58 km) takes you from Vääksy to Pulkkilanharju esker, which is part of Finland's most scenic road. The esker is one of the most significant sites of the Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark. The journey continues towards the village of Kalkkinen, where it's a good idea to take a break at the Pihamaa vineyard and summer cafe.

PÄIJÄTSALO BIKEPOLKU mountain biking trail (approx. 7 km) circles the island in two parts: the easier blue and the more challenging red routes. The forest trails offer challenges for both beginners and experienced cyclists. A viewing tower along the route offers magnificient views over Lake Päijänne.

SALPAUSSELKÄ TRAILS off-road trails (approx. 30 km) run along the Salpausselkä region in Lahti and Hollola. The trails can be used for walking and mountain biking. With a hybrid bike, it's also a good idea to head to the gravel surfaces of the Salpausselkä outdoor routes.

The LAHTI–URAJÄRVI ROUTE (65 km), favored by locals, offers varied landscapes and brisk riding. The route run from Lahti Sports Centre to Urajärvi village through countryside scenery and along the Second Salpausselkä. Café Hugo & Lilly in the courtyard of Urajärvi Manor is a good place to take a break and explore the manor at the same time.

The VELLAMO TOUR CYCLING ROUTE (71 km), running through the rural landscapes of Hartola and Sysmä, has several break spots to choose from. In the villages of Sysmä and Hartola, there are restaurants, cafes, and swimming spots. ■

Experienced guides will lead you through the landscapes shaped by water and tell you about history and biodiversity. www.salpausselkageopark.fi

AURINKOVUORI HILL in Asikkala has two illuminated outdoor trails (3 km, 7 km) and forest paths, as well as training stairs leading to a lean-to shelter and a campfire site. Aurinkovuori

www.visitlahti.fi/ nature

KAPATUOSIAN LINNAVUORI in Hollola is an approximately 12,000 years old esker. A viewing tower at the top offers spectacular views over Lake Vesijärvi. You can climb the hill along paths or stairs. There is Kapatuosia nature trail (2.4 km) in the area.

LAPAKISTO nature reserve is a popular hiking destination in Lahti. The area has old forests, lakes, and a bog, as well as five marked trails (total 23 km), several campfire sites and two lean-toshelters. An accessible trail from the Ristikankaantie parking area leads to a campfire site.

Close to the services of Hollola's municipal center, the SALPAUSSELKÄ MARSH TRAIL (10.5 km) covers the landscapes of three mires. The LAKE TRAIL (7.5 km) loops around three Tiilijärvi lakes. The varied trails run along flat roads, winding forest paths, and duckboard. The TIIRISMAA TRAIL (4.5 km) terrain is varied and occasionally rocky. The moderately difficult route features a lean-to shelter and the impressive Pirunpesä gorge.

HARTOLAN KUNINKAANPOLKU

TRAIL (3.8 km), consisting of four sections, forms a unique entity where you can explore the built environment of the Tainionvirta river, swamp forests, and cultural sites. The trails are clearly marked in the terrain with their own colors, and the Ekonpolku section is accessible. The route has two swimming spots.

I NATURE

Are you familiar with the nature etiquette?

Part of responsible tourism is respecting nature and preserving it for future generations.

1 Respect nature – do not alter it. Keep pets leashed.

2 Prefer marked trails and avoid wearing down nature.

3 Follow the rules for different modes of movement. For instance, do not use private docks as rest stops and paddle at least 50 meters away from cottage shores.

4 Camp only in permitted areas. Do not wash dishes or bathe directly in bodies of water.

5 Make fires only in designated areas, prefer using a portable stove. Do not light fires during wildfire warnings.

6 Do not litter – take your trash with you to a waste disposal point.

The island offers lovely sandy beaches, sheltered lagoons and a marked trail (9 km) for hikers, boaters and paddlers to enjoy. There are several campfire sites and camping areas along the trail. Kelvenne can only be reached by boat.

Forest Yoga in a Health Forest

Forest Yoga combines the health benefits of the forest with yoga.

Guided Forest Yoga includes various yoga poses and breathing exercises. The practice aims to be mindful of the surrounding nature and utilize its health benefits to enhance one's well-being. Calm breathing and movement under the forest canopy relax and strengthen both the mind and body. Forest Yoga can be practiced in any forest, but in Lahti, it's also possible to try it in a health forest. The health forest consists of the Forest Trail (3.4 km) and the accessible Likolampi loop connected to it. The health forest's varied routes are suitable for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. ■

Attention, attention, this is Lahti and Salpausselkä! LAHTI'S SKI JUMPING HILL serves as an observation tower in the summer. In July, you can reach the tower by chairlift next to the ski jumping hill's landing slope to the base of the hill, and from there by elevator to the viewing platform. During the same trip, it's worth visiting the Ski Museum and the statue of Siiri “Äitee” Rantanen. www.highhilladventure.fi, www.hiihtomuseo.fi

The pit of the ski jumping hill's landing slope turns into a unique SWIMMING POOL in the summer, offering pools for both adults and children. Hunger and thirst can be quenched at the restaurant VOITTO , while admiring the ski jumps.

ally impressive towards the heights. The Church of the Cross, an essential part of the cityscape, stylishly mirrors the CITY HALL designed by another master architect, Eliel Saarinen, located at the southern end of the axis crossing the market square. The south end of Church of the Cross features 52 windows in the shape of a cross. Church of the Cross is closed for renovation, but guided tours are available at the City Hall during the summer.

Located near the ski jumps, the unique HOME STADIUM OF FC LAHTI attracts groundhoppers and football fans from both Finland and abroad. Groundhoppers travel around the world collecting football stadiums and experiences. They enjoy the atmosphere of matches alongside fans, adding the stadium to their list.

MALSKI is a cultural center operating in the heart of Lahti. Located in a historic brewery building, Malski's driving forces include innovative companies, the Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva, Malski Bistro restaurant, Kahiwa Coffee & Wine wine bar, and Ant Brew brewery pub.

In KISAPUISTO, you can enjoy beach volleyball, tennis, and football, among other activities. The park also has several padel and basketball courts. The Lahti Tennis and Squash Center is also located in Kisapuisto. The football stadium was built for the 1952 Olympics. A statue of footballer Jari Litmanen can also be found in Kisapuisto. ■
