WELCOME!
For some, a perfect vacation means exploring local food and drink culture; for others, it’s about exercise, nature, cultural events, browsing local boutiques, or simply enjoying silence and beautiful scenery. The diverse nature, ice trails, nature paths, skating rinks, ski slopes, and over a thousand kilometers of cross-country ski trails are just a few examples of the recreational options available.
The Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark area offers fascinating and geologically unique hiking destinations, with a history stretching back to the last Ice Age. To explore more recent history, take a walking tour of Lahti (see page 10 of the guide for more information) or visit local museums. The newly opened Lahti Historical Museum and Heinola City Museum provide insights from prehistory to the present day. The Itä-Häme Museum is a treasure trove of manor culture and folk artifacts. Art can be admired not only in galleries but also by touring the murals of Lahti. Art has also found its way into boutiques, restaurants, and pubs, and, of course, the Lanu Park in Lahti brings art to the heart of an outdoor trail.
At the end of the day, it’s nice to reflect on all you’ve seen and experienced over a good meal and local drinks, enjoy a glass of the world’s best and purest tap water, relax with good music, and plan where to head next. Perhaps tomorrow will bring a sauna and a dip in icy water?
Lahti, celebrating its 120th anniversary, and the surrounding region invite you to a winter getaway. ■

Artist Terhi Kaakinen’s favorite spots in Lahti
Lahti-based artist Terhi Kaakinen’s wooden sculptures are inspired by her everyday life with a young family.
1 Liipola Forest
I enjoy walking in the forest. Liipola Forest is an urban woodland, where nature is close, and the air is fresh. It’s nice to catch up with loved ones while walking through the woods.
2 Art Gallery Galleria Uusi Kipinä and Art Rental Service
A place that feels like home to me; I’ve spent a lot of time there. And the idea of renting art is brilliant – you can bring art into your home with a small monthly contribution. I personally enjoy every piece we’ve added to our home.
3 Teeleidi
The city’s only tea shop. It’s a wonderful place for a tea enthusiast like me. In addition to tea, they also have beautiful ceramic cups, teapots, and other items.
Set aside plenty of time, as the history of this 120-year-old city is colorful and spreads everywhere. While you’re at it, keep an eye out for Lahti’s landmarks.
"Lahti’s Concrete" refers to the LAHTI SKI JUMP in the Sports Center, but there’s more concrete to be found here. The LAHTI CITY THEATRE, awarded the Concrete Structure of the Year in 1982, is an iconic example of Finnish concrete architecture. The modernist CHURCH OF THE CROSS , one of architect Alvar Aalto’s last projects, also uses concrete. The church facade is made of dark red brick, but its soaring bell tower is raw concrete.
1 THE CITY HALL is one of the best-known landmarks and an essential part of the cityscape. Designed by architect Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1912, the building and its park are protected by the Finnish Building Heritage Act.
The 150-meter radio masts on RADIOMÄKI HILL are an inseparable part of Lahti and its identity. Radiomäki is also home to Lahti’s oldest ATHLETICS FIELD, which is turned into a skating rink in winter, and LAHTI’S OLDEST CEMETERY. Among those buried there is August Fellman, a landowner and statesman who established Lahti’s first elementary school.
FELLMAN PARK , established on the former grounds of Fellman’s estate, was built on the site of Finland’s largest prison camp. In the park, sculptor Erkki Kannosto’s large-scale MONUMENT TO RED PRISONERS commemorates the soldiers and civilians who were imprisoned in 1918. The park
also features UP TO GLORY, a bronze statue by Jussi Mäntynen.
The recently renovated LAHTI HISTORICAL MUSEUM is located in the Lahti Manor, built as the home of August Fellman’s family in 1898. The building was designed by architect Hjalmar Åberg.
The facades of the former Mallasjuoma brewery buildings have been preserved almost in their original state, though their use has changed completely. MALSKI is now home to the Museum of Visual Arts Malva, the event hall Sammio, Malski Bistro, Kahiwa Coffee and Wine, the brewery pub Ant Brew, and the museum shop.
LANU PARK , located on Kariniemi Hill, features twelve sculptures by Olavi Lanu. These individual artworks form a cohesive whole within the park. The sculptures are placed along illuminated pathways, making them easy to admire. In 2025, it will be 100 years since the birth of professor Olavi Lanu.
Architect Unto Ojonen designed many of Lahti’s NOTABLE BUILDINGS, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. His work includes Joutjärvi Church and Paimela School. He was also responsible for the expansions of the Asko furniture factory in the late 1940s and early 1960s. ■
Leave your skis at home and head out to enjoy the stunning landscapes of the Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark, forest trails and fascinating natural sites.
HERE ARE A FEW route suggestions where you can experience the landscape created by water: Salpausselkä Trails shared-use paths, Asikkala's Aurinkovuori winter hiking routes, Lemmenharju nature trail in Vierumäki, Linnaistensuo nature trail in Lahti, and Päijätsalo hiking routes in Sysmä. ■
