Pulkkilanharju esker is one of the most spectacular geosites of the Geopark.

A landscape created by water Salpausselkä Geopark is an internationally valuable area. THE SALPAUSSELKÄ RIDGES, formed by ancient glacial meltwater streams at the end of the Ice Age, represent Finland’s internationally best-known geological heritage. Salpausselkä Geopark extends from the legendary terrains of the First Salpausselkä in Lahti to the southern part of the vast Lake Päijänne. The region, covering six municipalities, was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in spring 2022. The forest-covered ridges, the long chains of narrow eskers, the magnificent rocky hills and hundreds of lakes dotted with islands create a scenic landscape of unique geological interest. However, the importance of the region is not only based on what is visible on the surface: the thick gravels and sands of Salpausselkä hide within enormous reserves of pure groundwater. Here, some of the world's finest water can be enjoyed straight out of the tap. ■
