The stores and marketplaces in the Lahti region are stock full of local vegetables.

Actions, not talk We can all make the future a little better by doing small deeds every day – also during our holidays. 1. RENT A BIKE. The Lahti region has invested in cycling, and we have plenty

of cycling routes of different levels and lengths.

2. DRINK TAP WATER. The water in the Lahti region is the best and cleanest

in the world. Fill up your water bottle from the tap and put it in your bag.

3. MAKE SUSTAINABLE PURCHASES. There are wonderful flea markets,

antique shops and recycling centres in the Lahti region where you can make great finds. 4. USE A TEXTILE SHOPPING BAG. In Finland, people use the plastic bags you

get from the grocery store as rubbish bags. If you don’t need any rubbish bags, you should use a textile shopping bag. Many local boutiques sell unique ones.

5. EAT GREENS. In the summer, store shelves and marketplaces are full of

seasonal vegetables, fruit and berries. Restaurants and cafés also offer delicious vegetarian and vegan food. ■ www.greenlahti.fi/en/participate

Enjoy the nature The varied environment of the Lahti region offers something for everyone. We have green ridges, nature conservation areas, natural peace and wonderful offroad cycling routes. KUNINKAANPOLKU HIKING ROUTE is a network consisting of four parts. You can also bike there, and there are versatile tourist services along the route. LEHMUSREITTI is an urban nature trail of approx-

imately 11 kilometres that goes around the downtown area in Lahti. The route has been marked in the terrain with green linden leave markings on

trees. You will see cultural environments and signs of the latest ice age along the route. CANOEING ON LAKE PÄIJÄNNE The Päijänne National Park and the Pulkkilanharju esker splitting lake Päijänne are a genuine treasure for friends of longer canoeing trips. The National Park is a unity of inland archipelago, consisting of rugged

cliffs, sandy eskers and small islets. You can stop at one of the park’s sandy lagoons to have a rest and swim. There are places on the islands where you can make a campfire and pitch a tent. HEINOLA–RUUHIJÄRVI Nice and varied terrain. Fairly long stretches of cycling along main roads with relatively little traffic. Route length: 38 km. www.jalki.fi

RAUHANNIEMI NATURE CONSERVATION AREA

is located in between lake Iso-Kukkanen and Immiläntie road. There are easy-to-travel paths through and at the edges of the conservation area. LAPAKISTO is an exceptionally varied nature conservation area. Size of the area is 230 hectares, and it consists of seven different parts: the rugged

eastern shore of lake Pitkäjärvi; mixed forest in Ahvenlammi; rugged shores of lake Kalliojärvi; Sammalistonsuo swamp; lake Lapakisto; as well as boggy Sammalisto and a pond to the east of the area. There are five clearly marked routes in the area. Their combined length is 23 km. THE SALPAUSSELKÄ RIDGE hiking routes in Lahti are also excellent for off-road cycling. The area is extremely hilly, and you can choose a biking route suited for your physical condition. PULKKILANHARJU is a beautiful eight-kilometre esker. Parts of it have been retained in their natural state. There is a trail which is part of the Päijänne National Park, including boards providing information on the nature, geology and history of the area.

Pirunkirkko in Heinola is one of the wonderful Geopark sites.

A journey to the Ice Age Around a quarter of the people in Finland drink water drawn from the Salpausselkä Geopark area. There are interesting geological sites in the area, such as Pirunkirkko Cave in Heinola, Onkiniemi Rocking Stone in Sysmä and Pirunpesä Gorge in Hollola. The most outstanding geological features, representing the bestknown geological heritage of Finland, are the Salpausselkä Ridges, laid down by the last Ice Age. The First and Second Salpausselkä are at their most spectacular in the Salpausselkä Geopark area. Here they are joined by internationally valuable, scenic eskers, such as Kelvenne and Pulkkilanharju. The Salpausselkä ridges and the eskers are important not only based on what can be seen on the surface: they hold massive, renewable underground reserves of high-quality groundwater, filtered by thick layers of gravel and sand. The region gets the drinking water from these reserves. Meanwhile, the drinking water of the Helsinki area comes from southern Lake Päijänne. The geopark is applying for the UNESCO Global Geopark designation. ■ www.visitlahti.fi/en/salpausselkageopark

1. Fishing is a great pastime for adults and children alike. Photo Julia Kivelä.

Let’s go fishing! We have clean waters and lakes full of fish. You should try out fishing, because you don’t need any permit to fish with a fishing rod. Don’t forget to take a packed lunch with you!

There are places suitable for FISHING FROM THE SHORE in Lahti on the breakwaters close to the harbours, for example. The breakwaters in Niemi and Teivaa are excellent for fishing with a fishing rod or lure, for example. There are plenty of fish species in the Joutjoki river delta because of warmer condensate water in the river. You can also fish from the shore close to the Niemi harbour in the Joutjoki delta.

RAUTJÄRVI FISHING AREA in Heinola is excellent for the whole family. Reminiscent of the wilderness, the area is located some five kilometres from downtown Heinola. There are lean-tos, campfire sites and fishing jetties in the area. You can also rent a boat at lake Rautjärvi, and Sataoja nature trail criss-crosses the area. You can fish in Rautjärvi all year round. Rainbow trout is planted in the lake approximately once a month.

GUIDE SUMMER 2020 | #visitlahti | www.lahtiguide.fi

TEURONJOKI river, which starts at Hämeenkoski in Hollola, is an idyllic fishing and canoeing site. The river is approximately 35 kilometres long.

In ASIKKALA, there are fishing spots meant for children and young people along a nature trail in between Vääksynjoki river and the Vääksy Canal. In Enskala, children and young people can fish with a fishing rod while using worms as their bait, but fishing is not allowed in Vääksynjoki river. HAMMONJOKI river close to Hollola parish village is one of the few rivers with naturally occurring brook trout in the lake Vesijärvi catchment area. Only fly-fishing is allowed there, and you must use barbless hooks. Fishing with passive gear is not allowed in the river delta, at the mouth of Hammonjoki river, in lake Vesijärvi or in lake Koveroistenjärvi. KEIJULANKOSKI rapids is the best and most beautiful fishing spot in Hartola. The rapids have been restored with fish, sports fishers and kayakers in mind. You can fly-fish, or use wobblers or traditional spoon lures. TAINIONVIRTA river in Hartola is a slow-moving river travelling through varied landscape: there are fields and hilly forests in the area. You can fish from the bank of the river. The riverbanks are easy to reach. Fishers typically catch trout or grayling from Tainionvirta. KYMIJOKI river is a great fishing river where you

can catch pike perch, perch, rainbow trout, brown trout, asp, salmon, sea trout and grayling. You can catch plenty of fish and crayfish in the northern part of Kymijoki river or the former Mankala rapids area, which is part of the Iitti lure fishing permit area. A nature trail goes round lake MERRASJÄRVI in Lahti. Along the trail, there are several public fishing jetties suitable for fishing with a fishing rod or spinning. The key fish species in the lake are pike, bream and perch. ■

2. Go on a fishing trip!

TIP!

All persons between the ages of 18 and 64 must pay a fishing fee. Once you’ve paid, you can fish with one rod in the whole of Finland, except for wildlife reserves. You don’t have to pay if you only plan to fish with a fishing rod using worms as your bait.

Cycling is an ecological mode of transport that will also make you fitter.

Rent a bike Cycling is an easy way to see new places. Especially so in the Lahti region. We have a comprehensive cycling route network, short distances, wonderful nature and a variety of excellent cycling routes. The region has also invested in the lending and hiring of bicycles. There are electric bikes, mountain bikes, fatbikes, children’s bikes and Jopo bikes, but where can you get them from? Almost all of the hotels in the region have a couple of bikes you can borrow. You can borrow a city bike from Lahti Travel Centre for a maximum of four hours. In Heinola, you can rent a bike at least from Camping Heinäsaari and K-Market Heinolantori. If you’re in Sysmä, you should go to Tervalepikko Cottages. You can rent a fatbike from the Hartola Town Hall. These are just a couple of examples: you can find a comprehensive list online. ■ www.visitlahti.fi/en/activities

This summer, you can get from lake Päijänne to Kouvola via Kimola Canal.

By boat from lake Päijänne to Kouvola The 70-metre tunnel of Kimola Canal is a rarity, even on the global scale. This summer, Kimola Canal will open up a water route from lake Päijänne to Kouvola. During a renovation that took a couple of years, the channel was dredged and widened, for example. The old log floating canal’s bundle gantry cranes were demolished and replaced with a ship lock reaching a height of 12 metres. What makes the 5.5-kilometre Kimola Canal special is a 70-metre tunnel that is a rarity even on the global scale. The tunnel and the exceptional sluice height make Kimola a memorable experience
for boaters and passers-by alike. ■ www.visitlahti.fi/en/activities/water

Lahti Lahti is the best place to see sculptures by the internationally renowned sculptor Olavi Lanu (1925–2015). You can admire Lanu sculptures on Radiomäki hill, in Pikku-Vesijärvi park and downtown on Lanunaukio square and in front of the City Theatre. There is a Lanu Park on Kariniemenmäki hill close to lake Vesijärvi, a protected piece of lush

woodland with twelve huge, concrete pieces of art in it. The artist designed the sculptures to blend in with the surrounding nature. The sculpture park is a unique site you can enjoy both in summer and in winter: the human figures look quite different when covered with moss or snow. ■

Due to its numerous archaeological findings, Sysmä is a treasure trove for archaeologists – the thousand years of history offer plenty to draw from. The most recent treasure was found in 2017 close to the medieval St. Olaf ’s Church. Master goldsmith Anne Laitinen has created the jewellery series Sysmä

based on the findings. It includes necklaces, bracelets, brooches and rings. A jewellery series inspired by sacrificial stones with cups carved in them is another novelty: Sysmä has more of the cup stones from the Iron Age than anywhere else in Finland.
