American Theologian and Author James Freeman Clarke once said that a politician thinks of the next election while a statesman thinks of the next generation. This is indeed a perfect statement of the actions of our very first ever Magical Speaker. He has reached the top echelons of government service and is adviser to the country’s richest Taipans, but his work with the Rotary Club of Manila continues to inspire his fellow Rotarians and Rotaractors alike. Let us listen to the insights of a humble man and a proud supporter of New Generation of Rotary leaders.

MAGICAL MEETING: Rotary-WorkLife Balance

It was the worst time for the city but the best time to serve as Partners-In-Service.

In the early morning of August 7, 2012, thousands of Metro Manilans were surprised by the raging waters that flooded their homes. Government officials did not waste any time as they alarmed local officials of the devastation of the heavy rains brought about by the increased monsoon rains. Classes in both private and public in all levels were cancelled. Many communities in low-lying areas were forced to evacuate to gyms and public schools.

The call for help was sounded of and the Rotary Club of Manila and the Rotaract Club of Manila listened. Armed with time, talent, and treasure, the Magical Rotarians and the Manila Rotaractors organized a relief operation for the affected victims. A social media campaign via Facebook and Twitter was launched. In no time, help form various sectors came flowing in. Charter President Charlie Chua headed the Magical Rotarians while President Jarl Gamonez led the Manila Rotaractors. A convivial atmosphere was in the air as the packing of relief good commenced at the Kingswood

home of Rtr. Gem Alegado on August 10. Magical Rotarians Tiffany Go and Mark Arquiza joined in the packing. The two also volunteered in the relief packing of the Rotary Club of Makati earlier that day. A total of 144 bags of relief goods were packed and readied for distribution. The next day, Magical Rotarians Tiffany Go, Mich Espinosa, and Mark Arquiza joined the joint relief efforts of the Manila Area Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of District 3810 in Tondo, Manila. The experience is truly one for the books of magical service.
