Introduction During the ‘Unbuilt London’ Summer School we have the aim to make a feedback of what was once the cradle of London, in order to envision a reinterpretation of its growth beyond the reality and looking forward the future. We want to discover a new hypothesis of what could have been the city through unbuilt architectures. ‘The programme will challenge students to consider London’s major projects as propositions that suggest new architectures alongside cultural, political and social repositioning of the city’. To begin this feedback, we will focus on the growing of the first settlements of Roman London, called ‘Londinium’. On the first day, students and teachers will build the first diorama: the portion corresponding to the former Londinium area. After this first collective action, next step starts: distribution of the London growth ar- eas will be organized. During these working sessions, the teams must design and make the proposals of the new independent diora- mas, which will grow around the Londinium Diorama. The distribution of each team will refer to the areas throughout the history of London, the areas will be defined corre- sponding to the reigns which had dominated this growth: ELIZABETH I, GEORGE III, VICTORIA (CORONATION), VICTORIA (JUBILEE), GEORGE VI, GREATER LONDON. Each area will be assigned to a team of students, which must develop a specific diorama of that particular space. The main goal is the ability to improve the city throughout the architecture and critical design. ‘The word diorama can either refer to a 19th Century mobile theatre device, or a three-dimensional full-size or miniature model. Dioramas are often built by different material and can contain different scales of landscape, architecture

or domestic situation’. We will built the three- dimensional London map using the diorama formats. The diorama purpose is to approach to the cultural, political and social transforma- tion of London, from tools and formats that are not specific of architecture field. The dioramas will be designed with paper, learning origami techniques and they will be activated by me- dia mapping projections. This will allow the students to learn new and unique design tech- niques, gaining more sophisticated approach to London reconstruction. These dioramas may contain Unbuilt Projects as well as objects, peo- ple, miniatures, which represent each stage of History that has never come to pass. This #DigitalDiorama workshop has two main goals: First, it has the objective that the students improve their understanding the complexity of the design process, and the complexity of the City and acquiring tools for simplicity in order to optimize their efficiency. On the other hand, it has the aim to create a know-how to improve the students ability to acquire tools for the contemporary design, by understanding the meaning of the transversal knowledge to improve student ́s creativity and background, as a designer and as a person.

Life in AA

The three-week, full time AA Summer Architecture School presents a challenging programme of design studios, field study, seminars and lectures that emphasise the importance of both practice and theory in contemporary architec-

ture. Based on the AA’s unit system, it offers participants a selection of varying design approaches, agendas and techniques, and represents a uniquely intensive and intimate environment that aims to expand formal and intellectual resources.

The course is for students considering a career in architecture, new or current architectural students from around the world as well as individuals contemplating a change of careers or interested in exploring architecture and the

city. The Summer Architecture School offers an exciting approach to architectural design for anyone interested in exploring architecture as a profession or as an extended field of research.

TEAM1. Londinium Alejandra Esteve Cortes, Sixuan Li

We are Sixuan and Alejandra and we are team 1. We have studied Londinium, central London. We chose this zone because of the many possibilities it offers. We began to do a research of our zone,

and we became extremely curious when we discovered there were several abandoned tube stations. We decided to create a network between these abandoned tube stations which links all of them together

In the centre of the network we have a bicycle storage where you can find different type of bicycles; old bikes, more moddern. Our idea is to create a tunel of time. Each tunel will take you to a different past century. The idea is that inside the tunels there are going to be projections of the century you are heading to as an art gallery with pictures hanging and projections as mentioned befote. Each

station would be converted into something tipical from that time. The central tube station will be the storage of all the bikes and an underground disco which represents the present. For instant, if you are travelling to the century were London was bombed, the tube station would be an underground refugee place. We look into past since the 5th century, that is when Londinium began.

Throughout these three weeks we have learnt so many things. We have learnt how to use new softwares, new techniques such as Origami. We learnt all of the different possi

bilities paper has and how much we can experiment with it. We use different scales to emphasize our importance in the tunel.

1984, tells the story of a city which has been taken over and governed by power and control. It has become a highly watched place where freedom no longer exists and all creativity and expression has ceased.

We were able to relate the story of 1984 to London, as we discovered that it is one of the most watched cities in the world. The concept of the book was further explored through the analysing the number of cameras and suicide rates, both linked to the depression of a controlled society.

We have intentionally created the ministry of truth pyramid at the largest scale as this was the starting point to our project and it also helps to represent it’s significance as a power of source and control. The projections on the south side of the river help to envision the creative and expression

which are created when people use the skatepark, such as graffiting, skating and socialising with one another. On the North side of the river we have projected eyes to represent the ‘All seeing eye’ which watches everything and everyone in the city, thus conveying a sense of restriction and control.

Juxtaposing the idea of control elements in our project, Southbank Skatepark was used to maintain the initiative of representing a place where expression and freedom has emerged, and the idea of control has been rebelliously neglected.

Through the idea of evermore connecting and purifying the city , one can infer that this would change the psychology of the city by generating happiness and awareness which would solve issues

In the London area the Victorian Jubilee architecture is found in both the north and south of the River Thames, linking into Central London and the wider areas of the city. Victorian Architecture took its place from the early 1840’s and up to the end of the 19th century.Through out this period England had been rapidly progressing through Industrialization, hence the Architecture itself had

been developing through the use of coal and steel. However , our environment had been continuously deteriorating through the constant pollution lasting furthermore throughout the 20th century and even so in the 21st century. Alongside this we discovered the severe damage caused to the city by The Blitz.

As a solution decided to use these factors through renovating the bombed areas by creating illustrious ecological housing , meanwhile still preserving the flamboyant Victorian remains.

Elaborating , on the ecological architecture we proceeded in creating a green transport system for the future. To find this we took the inspiration of the unbuilt Green Bird Tower proposed by Futureworks

Beatles’ last concert on roof was not officially announced. No traffic control could be provided of its sudden events, as the concert was held 2 days before its decision arrived by the band mates.

Our proposal was inspired by this incomplete musical events - the Beatles roof concert in 1969. We conceived such kind of musical events can happen and will be welcome by citizens. We are looking for a possible solution. We

thought that although ‘traffic’ could have been well controlled upon early event announcement received, ‘noise’ however was not controllable as they are air-borne waves. The city is requiring a structure to restrict sound transmission for controlling ‘noise’. We imagined that a massive, movable sound coverage for the urban area/district could be a possible solution. By the existing road network setting,

the structure could be mobile and have to be flexible for changing shapes. To interpret our concept of massive, movable, flexible structure, we related the concept of ‘Walking City’ by Ron Herron in 1964. In future we would like street music can be a great enjoyment for people, we are also taking opportunity to activate urban roof spaces by ‘events’.

During the process of origami we we worked with different prototype patterns; meanwhile thinking about their connections , function of structure in different scales.

We were looking for elastic connections enable changing shapes to fit urban built forms and, the structure must be controlled by road networks.

The noise control issue reinforced our choice of origami unit. Finally we selected a prototype unit that can provide surface to absorb sound.

We’ve working with 3 scales: S, M, L for different urban situations. S and M have higher flexibility which can suit urban blocks in district , L can suit green space.

We highlighted green spaces and We use projection to show how the structure adapt to the existing urban road network. We projected the routes to connect the movement of structure.

The unbuilt project in London that I got inspiration was the Fun Palace by Cedric Price. The project, celebrating for its exemplification of notions of time-based and anticipatory architecture, was conceived and developed by Price in 1964 but was never realised. In the case of my proposol, the ‘Fun

Palace’ is surrounded by the trees and itself is a vast mountain, a green place, a natural environment where people can do a lot of entertaining activities in order to enhance the their life style.

The area I got is the broad north outer London which was built during the GeorgeVI period, as a result of the sprawl of the city. According to the research, there are 3 main hills in this area, which are Muswell Hill, North hill and Hampstead. Based on the geography of this area, I had the idea of building the artificial mountains on the top of existing hills.

The existing mountains are made by using the technique of Origami while the artificial ones are made by using the technique of Kirigami. The reason I chose to combine both Origami and Kirigami is because it will create a contrast effect: rough against smooth when the models are projected with video.

Concerning the mapping, there are 4 periods in the first part ‘the Growth of London’: prehistory of London, the Industry Revolution, nowadays London and future London. following by ‘the shrinking of nature’ as a reflection of the

development of the city. In the end, the mapping will show people’s life and activities as well as the natural change on the Fun Mountains. In Conclusion, the Fun Mountains not only has the aesthetic beauty, but also the functions to enhance people’s lives.

The city of London has been expanding radially ever since the first Roman settlement, Londinium. This project addresses this issue of the continuous, exponential expansion of the city and looks at the potential for expanding the city vertically rather than radially.

Using origami techniques we devised a module with structural properties that would be assembled to create artificial landscapes that would stack up vertically above the city, taking inspiration from radical responses to changing cities

Our diorama represents a collage of merged scales depicting the increase in population density towards the centre of the city and expansion towards the outskirts; we consider it as a reinterpretation of the ancient city walls of Londinium. It also speculates how such a change in London’s growth

would affect different aspects such as the social structure and culture of the city, as well as the nature of its complex by Archigram’s walking city, in addition to Charles Glover’s King’s Cross Aerodrome which proposes a circular runway hovering above King’s Cross Station.

The only thing matching our uncontrolled outburst of population growth is technological advancement.

We suggest that future automated construction techniques using robotics, drones, 3d printing etc.

these can be used to create these vertical artificial landscapes that may also be dissembled for use elsewhere.
