Baramul Stud
from 2023 MMGC Magazine
Words / Renee Geelen
Afarm is only as good as its latest Gr1 winner, and while Baramul Stud was made famous by standing Star Kingdom, their rich history of producing quality racehorses continues today with Alligator Blood. 2022 Gr1 Underwood Stakes winner Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) was sold by Baramul Stud at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $55,000; and now boasts eleven wins, three at Gr1 level, and earnings over $3.6million. Ironically, due to ownership issues during his 24 start career, he’s ended up coming full circle back into the ownership of Baramul Stud’s Gerry Harvey who reportedly paid a lot more for him than he sold him for!
In the same draft, Baramul Stud sold Gr1 JJ Atkins Plate winner Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock) for $220,000, and the colt now stands at stud in Queensland. Other Gr1 winners from this farm included Gr1 WS Cox Plate winner and champion sire Savabeel, Lotteria, Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, Arlington Road, and Gr1 Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent. Other recent graduates from Baramul’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale drafts include McLaren (Exceed and Excel) who won the Gr3 Canonbury Stakes on debut. Of the current fouryear-olds, Listed winner Me Me Lagarde (Star Turn) was offered by Baramul Stud at the 2020 Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale, while Listed winner Blondeau (I Am Invincible) was sold in the same draft.
Baramul Stud’s current crop of three year-old graduates from the Gold Coast Sale includes Gr2 winner Best of Bordeaux (Snitzel) who won two group races at two and was second in the Gr1 Golden Slipper; before continuing on the same way at three, having recently won the Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes. Listed winner Stroll (Snitzel) as well as stakes placed Flashing Steel (Not A Single Doubt), Snitcat (Snitzel), and Vienna Princess (Snitzel) are all from the same draft.
Baramul Stud have a draft of fifty yearlings for the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, split equally between book one and book two. The stallions represented in their draft are All Too Hard (7 yearlings), American Pharoah, Better Than Ready (4), Brazen Beau (2), Dundeel, Epaulette (2), Exceed and Excel, Exceedance (2), Fastnet Rock, I Am Invincible (3), Justify, Press Statement, Russian Revolution, Snitzel (7), So You Think (3), Spirit of Boom (2), Star Turn (3), Written Tycoon (4), and Zoustar (4).
The colt by I Am Invincible from Gr1 winner Diademe, Lot 785, is bound to prove popular with Diademe having a great start to her broodmare career with her first two foals both collecting black type, including Listed winner Unition.
A Snitzel half-brother to Gr1 winner Sofia Rosa is Lot 667, while Lot 537 is a Zoustar half-brother to Listed winner Stroll. Gr2 winner No Evidence Needed has an I Am Invincible colt, Lot 186, and she has already left Gr2 placed winner Discharged; while Listed winner Palazzo Pubblico has Lot 214, a Written Tycoon colt who is a half-brother to Listed winner Palazzo Spirit. Gr2 winner Palacio de Cristal has a Zoustar colt, Lot 213, who is a half-brother to Gr2 placed winner Palazzo Vecchio and two other winners.
Paul Thompson from Baramul spoke to Bluebloods about their 2023 draft.
What is the best horse you have sold through Magic Millions?
We have sold many good horses through Magic Millions. Cox Plate winner and successful stallion Savabeel, a Golden Slipper winner in Polar Success and our current hero Alligator Blood. My all-time favourite is the one we actually passed in, Royal Descent. Watching Royal Descent win the Oaks by ten lengths and then becoming the best mare in the country over a mile.
What makes Magic Millions at the Gold Coast such a success?
Magic Millions is successful for a combination of reasons; the location at that time of the year has major appeal along with the family environment. The Magic Millions sale is an event that people want to be a part of, there are no elitist attitudes, and everybody is welcome.
Football or Fishing?
I’d like to say fishing but have done it enough to know I’m not good at it. Exciting as it is to pull in a big fish, the time between catches is unfulfilling to me. I find football much more stimulating as there is a lot more happening to keep my attention.
What drives you nuts about social media?
Social media has so many amazing benefits but not enough to get me across the line. I’m one of the few people that has no social media platform. I see it as possibly very time consuming and an easy way for people to have an opinion on something they know nothing about. People can say detrimental things that hurt others and often these things would never be said verbally.
