Rosemont Stud
from 2024 MMGC Magazine
Cover: Fashion Legend is a Gr.3 winner, sold by Rosemont for $260K who went on to win over $1.5 million.
Rosemont Stud lived up to the brand of ‘breeding brilliance’ with Gr1 winner and Magic Millions Gold Coast graduate Mr Quickie, who earned over $2million as a racehorse after being sold by Rosemont for $115,000. Many of their other Magic Millions graduates have shown plenty of profit for buyers too, such as Gr2 North Star Lass (sold by Rosemont for $260,000 and was on-sold as a broodmare for $1.525million), Gr3 Fashion Legend (who has earned over $1.5million off a purchase price of $260,000), Gr3 Chica Fuerte (sold as a yearling by Rosemont for $300,000, earned $350,000 as a racehorse and was on-sold as a broodmare prospect for $900,000), and promising group placed three year-old Gates.
Rosemont Stud will present a strong draft of seventeen yearlings at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with youngsters by Bivouac, Blue Point, Encryption, Exceed and Excel, Hanseatic, I Am Invincible, Maurice, Shamus Award, Starspangledbanner, Zousain and Zoustar.
How would you sum up your 2024 draft?
“It’s an exciting draft with strong pedigreed individuals whose type match their outstanding profiles,” said bloodstock General Manager Ryan McEvoy. “It’s probably the strongest group we’ve ever taken as a collective with high profile commercial sires and plenty of yearlings out of stakes winning dams or out of mares who have produced a stakes winner. When you assess the stakes results from any given weekend invariably the winners are from stakes winning or stakes producing dams. I’d like to think that anyone reading the catalogue will be impressed with the Rosemont draft and furthermore when they inspect the draft at the sale.”
I Am Invincible filly, Lot 805, is the first foal of dual Gr3 winner Jamaican Rain, from the family of Gr1 winner Outstrip (sire of Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip). She is all quality and bred on the larger, very successful I Am Invincible – Encosta De Lago cross.
Two Exceed and Excel colts will catch the judges’ eyes; Lot 709 is the first live foal of Gr2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes winner Gift of Power who was a tough racemare, winning eleven races with three of those as a two year-old. This colt is from the Eight Carat family of Don Eduardo, Octagonal, etc. Lot 962 is a half-brother to Gr3 two year-old winner Treasurway and this colt is only the third foal of four-time winning mare Miss Toorak Flyer.
“We can’t be more excited to present the first crop yearlings by the brilliant Hanseatic. He was such a scintillating two year-old himself that was so highly rated by many a fine judge. He was the most popular sire in Victoria in his first season at stud and now his first yearlings hit the market.” An explosive two yearold who won three races, all in black type company, including the Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude (c&g) and was second to Tagaloa in the Gr1 Blue Diamond, Hanseatic will be represented in the Rosemont Stud draft by five colts, led by the half-brother to Gr1 winner Krone, Lot 1398, whose dam is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Universal Prince and Universal Queen.
The third foal of Gr1 Tattersalls Tiara winner Tycoon Tara is Lot 320 and his dam won ten races with six of those in group company. Gr3 winner Cameo’s colt, Lot 502, is well-related, as his dam is a half-sister to Gr1 Queensland Derby winner Kukeracha.

What makes the Magic Millions sales and races special?
“It’s clearly in the forefront of breeder’s minds many, many months in advance. A sale that has simply become a staple for any breeder, buyer and thoroughbred enthusiast for the early part of January. Who wouldn’t want to be there? The Gold Coast atmosphere, weather and the many events surrounding the actual sales and race-day make it a true carnival feel. Magic Millions have established an awesome couple of weeks, from a vendor viewpoint they do a superb job in putting together a large, diverse buying bench and the graduates’ success speaks for itself.”
What has been your most satisfying result at the Magic Millions?
“We took great delight in seeing Will Freedman buy a horse like Fashion Legend (Deep Field) on spec and, along with Richard, take him through to winning the $2m 2023 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas. Multiple Gr1 winner MR QUICKIE was raised at Rosemont and sold at Magic Millions as was Gr2 winner NORTH STAR LASS who was sold at the completion of her racing for over $1.5m. From a sales perspective we sold a subsequent stakes horse GATES (Frankel) for $950,000 to Dalziel Bloodstock and Peter Moody. These are just a few of many great stories for Rosemont at this sale. Our draft and our results really stack up over time.”
Which past champion do you wish you could have seen at the races?
“PHAR LAP. When you see him in the Melbourne Museum he is such an imposing horse, it would have been cool to see him live, a big shiny chestnut that dominated like he did and was so celebrated by an adoring public in the midst of the great depression.”
