Shirley Elghanian We are delighted to be back in LA, where we have been so warmly welcomed, for our third gala fundraiser. It has been an amazing and incredibly strong year for Magic of Persia (MOP), despite several challenges. Last autumn, we were thrilled to announce the 2017 edition of the Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize (MOP CAP). For me, this marks a particular achievement due to the unexpected hurdles we have faced, not only in its launch, but also in the execution of this, our fifth edition of the prize. There was a moment when the outlook seemed grim, as plans to send the judges of MOP CAP 2017 to Tehran were unexpectedly aborted due to the political climate. However, with some creative thinking by the MOP team, an out-of-the-box solution was found and we were able to swiftly arrange for the judges to reconvene in London. It was thanks to the generosity of Bonhams that the deliberation finally took place in one of their conference rooms. As such, we look forward with particular excitement to the exhibition of MOP CAP 2017 finalists this October during Frieze week at Bonhams in London. No matter what the challenges, our number one priority is to make a difference to the lives of these talented, young contemporary artists, and, as the saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Other achievements in the past year include our participation at artmonte-carlo in May, at which our stand received the prestigious ‘Prix Off FP Journe 2018’ prize. A record number of visitors attended our stand, including His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. We have been eagerly anticipating our exciting activities here in Los Angeles where we are honouring none other than the highly distinguished and generous artist, Shirin Neshat. She is also taking part in a panel discussion on her oeuvre, held in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). We will then be screening Neshat’s film, ‘Looking For Oum Kulthum’, at the British Museum at the end of month. It is thanks to the amazing efforts of supporters such as Shirin Neshat, and partner institutions like LACMA and the British Museum that we are able to do all that we do. With a small team of professionals and dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly on our programmes, new ideas are borne and executed instantly and efficiently. Our success is guaranteed by our ability to reinvent ourselves and welcome new individuals to the team who bring with them a wealth of experience and insight. The generosity of the MOP community – which encompasses our sponsors, donors, guests, artists and volunteers – knows no bounds. Since 2004, Magic of Persia (MOP) has operated on the cutting edge of Iranian art, carving a path for artists to present their work to an international audience. Through various programmes, the charity has created a platform for Iranian artists living inside and outside of Iran to have their voices heard through the universal language of art. Shirin Neshat

Shirin Neshat Shirin Neshat is an Iranian-born artist and filmmaker living in New York. Neshat’s early photographic works include the Women of Allah series (1993–1997), which explore the question of gender in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. Her subsequent video works depart from overtly political content or critique in favor of more poetic imagery and complex human narratives. Neshat continues to explore and experiment with the mediums of photography, video and film. Her most recent bodies of work include the photographic series The Book of Kings (2012), The Home of My Eyes (2015) and the trilogy Dreamers comprise of three video installations: Illusions and Mirrors (2013), Roja (2016), and Sarah (2016). In 2017, Neshat directed her first opera, AIDA at the Salzburg Music Festival, in Austria. Neshat has held numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums worldwide, including: the Museo Correr in Venice, Italy, to coincide with the 2017 Venice Biennale; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; Yarat Art Center, Baku, Azerbaijan; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Doha; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul; Detroit Institute of the Arts, Detroit, Michigan; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Serpentine Gallery, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, among others. Neshat has participated in major international group exhibitions, including the 48th Venice Biennale of Art (1999), the Whitney Biennial (2000), Documenta XI (2002) and Prospect.1 New Orleans (2009), Palazzo Grassi-Francoise Pinault Foundation (2012), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2013) and LACMA (2015). Neshat was the recipient of the Grand Prix at the Gwangju Biennial (2000), the Golden Lion Award - the First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennial (1999), the Hiroshima Freedom Prize (2005), the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2006), The Crystal Award (2014), and the Praemium Imperiale Award (2017). Her work is included in the collections of museums and public institutions around the world. In 2009, Neshat directed her first feature-length film, Women Without Men, which received the Silver Lion Award for Best Director at the 66th Venice International Film Festival. She has recently completed her second feature-length film, based on the life and art of the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum. Neshat is represented by Gladstone Gallery, New York and Brussels.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Dr. Shiva Balaghi

Dr. Shiva Balaghi Dr. Shiva Balaghi is a Project Director at the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles. Dr. Balaghi was among the first faculty to introduce the subject of Contemporary Middle Eastern Art at US universities, teaching for nearly two decades at NYU and Brown University. Her curatorial projects include co-curating a retrospective of Iran’s leading sculptor, Parviz Tanavoli, at Wellesley’s Davis Museum and curating Ghada Amer’s first exhibit in the Arab world in two decades at Al Serkal Avenue. She has written widely on Iranian visual culture for museum catalogues and publications like Artforum, Ibraaz and Hyperallergic. Her books include Picturing Iran: Art, Society and Revolution.

“Everything is so beautiful that you can spend hours in any of the rooms,” wrote Eleanor Roosevelt upon seeing an exhibition of Iranian art in June 1940. The American First Lady told readers of her newspaper column, “If you have not seen it, I can only urge you to go at once…The important thing is the realization that here is an art which has survived through 6,000 years of invasion, war, tyranny, prosperity and power. Here is the real proof that the spirit as expressed through the arts transcends all material things.” The exhibition “Six Thousand Years of Persian Art” saw Manhattan’s Union Club Building filled with some 2800 paintings, statues, carpets, manuscripts, pottery and other Iranian objects then valued at over ten million dollars. Everything on exhibit, noted The New York Times, was gathered from across the United States and Canada; all of the art objects had been carefully selected from thirtysix museums and sixty private collections. Time magazine reported, “The ringmaster of this gigantic art circus was a talkative, six-foot, grey-thatched former philosophy professor named Arthur Upham Pope.” A foundational figure in the field of Iranian art history, Pope’s interest in Iranian art began during childhood visits to his favorite aunt’s home, whose floors were covered with Persian rugs. “I looked at those rugs and it was like a call to the pulpit,” he recalled. After studying philosophy at Brown University, Pope went on to teach at the University of California, Berkeley where he married his student, Phyllis Ackerman. Together, they edited and wrote much of A Survey of Persian Art, which appeared in 6 volumes consisting of 2,817 pages with 1,482 plates and weighing some 55 pounds. Before he began teaching at NYU and helping the Metropolitan Museum expand their Islamic Art Department, the art historian Richard Ettinghausen worked with Pope on the massive undertaking. Published by the University of Oxford Press, the survey featured the work of 72 scholars from 16 nations and took over twelve years to complete. “In the history of Near Eastern studies the decade of 1930-40 will probably live as the period of exhibitions, especially of those of Iranian art, in nearly all parts of the world,” wrote Ettinghausen, reflecting on Pope’s 1940 exhibition. “There were the large Persian exhibitions in London (1931), Cairo (1934), Leningrad (1935), Paris (1938), and the smaller ones in Detroit (1930), Toledo, O., Brooklyn, N.Y., Warsaw (1935), Zurich (1936), San Francisco (1937), and Baltimore (1940).”

A Magical Era of Iranian Art By Shiva Balaghi, Ph.D. July 2018

The 1930s, observed art historian Robert Hillenbrand, were “a magical decade in the art history of Iran... In a scant ten years, or so it seemed to an astonished world, an entire art historical industry had sprung up out of the blue – all focused on a subject largely neglected by earlier scholarship – namely Islamic Iran.” Some eight decades later, we find ourselves amidst another “magical” era of Iranian art. As Magic of Persia undertakes an exhibition and auction in Los Angeles in the fall of 2018, there is a growing global interest in modern and contemporary Iranian art. An expanding network of scholars, curators, collectors, critics, and dealers are focusing on Iranian artists, across generations and within the country and the diaspora alike. In the process, the foundations of a significant yet once neglected area of art history are being developed. As in the 1930s, a most notable feature of this renewed “magical” interest in Iranian art is marked by a number of groundbreaking exhibitions, especially in American museums. The first museum exhibition in the United States since 1979 dedicated to such art, “Between Word and Image: Modern Iranian Visual Culture,” opened in September 2002 at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery. In his extensive review of the show, the Pulitzer Prize winning critic Holland Cotter wrote in the New York Times: “Until just a few years ago, ‘modern art’ and ‘contemporary’ art meant ‘Western art,’ at least in this part of the world.” The growing interest in Iranian art, then, was coterminous with a broader shift of art historical borders, one that encompassed a more comprehensive view of global cultural flows. A legacy of its founder Abby Weed Grey, the Grey houses one of the most significant collections of modern Iranian art held outside of that country. And subsequent to the 2002 exhibition, Grey’s Director Lynn Gumpert, has integrated that collection into a number of shows. Other American museums, in particular New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) undertook serious acquisition programs in the 2000s. And their curatorial program reflected their growing collections. In 2012, the Met showed works by Parviz Tanavoli, Monir Farmanfarmaian, Y Z Kami, and Ali Banisadr in a gallery adjacent to their newly reopened Islamic Art galleries. “In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art,” currently on view at LACMA, is in some sense the culmination of Linda Komaroff’s curatorial vision. The show features 125 works of art on display in galleries taking up an entire level of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum on LACMA’s campus. Nearly half of the exhibition is drawn from the museum’s own collection. The relationship between past and present, the interplay between history and myth, and the artistic appropriation of history are the overarching themes threaded throughout.

In January 2017, President Trump issued an executive order, banning entry to the US by refugees, immigrants, and tourists born in seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran. Within days, curators at MoMA rehung the museum’s galleries as a beautifully evocative gesture of protest. MoMA has been acquiring Iranian art since the 1960s, and for the first time in the museum’s history, such works were hung in the permanent collection galleries. A Faramarz Pilaram painting hung alongside Jackson Pollock. A Tanavoli sculpture was flanked by paintings by Gino Serverini and Umberto Boccioni. An artwork by Charles Hossein Zenderoudi was installed alongside iconic works by Matisse. A stopmotion animation video by Tala Madani was on view. Siah Armajani’s sculpture “Elements Number 30” was installed against a wall of windows looking onto the museum’s sculpture garden and a New York cityscape. Armajani’s art was first exhibited at MoMA in 1970. A museum press release from July 30, 1970 reads: “A computer print-out of all the digits between zero and one, stacked in a column more than nine feet high and weighing 500 pounds, is on view at The Museum of Modern Art in a current exhibition called INFORMATION. The work of Siah Armajani, a Persian born artist now living in Minneapolis, “Number between 0 and 1” is accompanied by three documentary photographs. The column consists of 25,974 pages, representing 28,571 hours of print-out time.” Since the 1950s, Armajani has mined the nexus of philosophy, poetry, and mathematics to extend the very meaning of art in our society. And as the Magic of Persia activities take place in Los Angeles, a long anticipated retrospective of Siah Armajani’s art will be opening in Minneapolis. In September 2018, the Walker Art Center, an important institution in the city Armajani has called home for six decades, will be mounting a monumental retrospective of his art. “Siah Armajani: Follow This Line” will then travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in February 2019. A number of solo exhibitions held in museums across the country highlighted artists who have lived in both Iran and the US. In 2013, the Detroit Institute of Art mounted a mid-career retrospective of Shirin Neshat, combining her photographs, film, and video installations. The following spring, the Cleveland Institute of Art featured recent paintings and ink drawings by Nicky Nodjoumi. And in September 2016, “Siah Armajani: Bridge Builder” opened at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. And in 2017, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh presented “Farhad Moshiri: Go West.” Curator Jose Diaz delved into the ways Moshiri’s art weaves together Iranian and American iconography.

Farbod Mehr (born 1991 in Iran) is an Iranian artist and architect based in London. After graduating with a degree in Architecture from Central Saint Martins, Mehr began to venture into the world of graphic design and illustration, combining with it his interests of avantgarde architecture and Persian mysticism. His work is at the crux of architecture, design, geometry, computer-generated graphics, personal experience and Persian visual culture: an amalgam of theoretical knowledge spanning from past to present. Mehr cites his main inspiration as the contemporary ability to reflect on his Persian roots and identity. Mehr founded the art line The Bad Shepherd, and worked as architectural design director at studioINTEGRATE, a London-based architecture and design studio. He is currently working to build up a platform and Augmented Reality magazine for emerging Iranian artists and designers, Hypersia. Mehr graduated from Central Saint Martins College in London with a first class honors in Architecture. He has exhibited his work in numerous countries including the UAE, the UK, Iran, the US and many more.

Parastoo Ahovan (born 1980 in Iran) pursued an art study programme in New York and got her MFA from Boston University in 2013. The biggest part of Ahovan’s work is the communication between her and other people; she works with various materials and media and encourages the viewer’s own thoughts and feelings. Ahovan has participated in several international symposiums in Tehran, Antalya, Baroda, Seville, New York, and Venice. Before moving to America, Ahovan worked with the city of Tehran and installed two pieces in the city. Ahovan was a member of the exhibitions committee of the Iranian Sculpture Association from 2008 to 2011. Ahovan’s recent works were shown at the Venice and Athens Biennials in 2016. She also had her work shown internationally and as part of multiple collections. Ahovan is now living and working in New York City.

Dariush Nehdaran (born 1984 in Iran) is a contemporary visual artist who fearlessly defies the rules in order to bring multiple and complex meanings to his work. Through rhythmic juxtaposed images containing a variety of perspectives, he constructs a world between dream and reality and plays with clarity and depth to suggest an alternative way of seeing things. Throughout his childhood, Nehdaran suffered from poor eyesight, but chose not to wear glasses to avoid the stigma of getting bullied. During that time, he experienced and viewed the world in a blurry and ambiguous way. When he became a teenager, the use of his grandfather’s camera enabled him to see the world clearly for the first time in his life. The fact that he saw the world blurry through his own eyes and clear through the lens of the camera and the printed image has driven him to explore the subject of amphibology as the main topic in his work. By doing so, he has created a unique style that demands his viewers’ attention and focus as part of the resolution in his work. Nehdaran currently lives in San Francisco but has expanded his art internationally. His photographs and video works are available both in public and private collections worldwide including the Armando Reverón Contemporary Art Museum in Caracas-Venezuela (2018), the LACMA in the US (2016) and the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai-UAE (2012). Nehdaran is the recipient of multiple awards including the Nikon International Photo Contest in Japan (2015), the Hamghadam Photo Festival in France (2010) and the 7th Image of the Year Festival in Tehran (2010).

Initially based in Cologne and then the San Francisco Bay Area, Ostovany has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally and has been the recipient of the Sierra Arts Endowment Grant, Craig Sheppard Memorial Grant and Sierra Nevada Arts Foundation Grant. Recent solo exhibitions include Stanford Art Spaces at Stanford University, Vorres Gallery in San Francisco and Aria Gallery in Tehran. Ladan Boroujerdi’s paintings possess a hybrid quality. On the one hand, they are influenced by traditional Iranian paintings, especially the Qajar period, and on the other hand, they contain elements of Western art. In her works she uses traditional methods of paint layering, such as used in the style of “Gol-o-Morgh” (flower gardens and birds), as well as layers of transparent watercolor which is essentially a Western technique. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she paints on paper and this gives her a unique quality. Boroujerdi has a fresh approach in focusing on aspects of traditional Iranian paintings, and reproducing them with exquisite accuracy in juxtaposition to other contradictory elements, often taken from the West. Younes Faghihi (born 1981 in Iran) is a musician and a painter who uses the forms, movements and composition of traditional Persian calligraphy and expresses his own art in a burst of universality. Dallal has been armed with a camera since the age of nine when his father gave him a Box Brownie. Besides mountains and landscapes, the world of horses has captured his imagination. Dallal has made London his home since moving from Colorado in 1994. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Member of the Alpine Club. He is a board member of the Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA), under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. He is founder of Addressing Climate Change, In Focus â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a photography competition for the youth of the world which has been exhibited during COP21 in Paris and COP22 in Marrakech in partnership with National Geographic and Lucie Foundation. Dallal has been honoured with commissions to photograph Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Princess Royal, HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Dubai. Bahar Sabzevari (born 1980 in Iran) spent most of her life in Iran before leaving for Paris in 2003 to study and experience art in Europe. Sabzevariâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s works have become a testimony to the weight religion has put on Iranian society and the duality and contradictions of contemporary Iranian life by using calligraphy, some religious details, characters and symbols to show the protest against restrictions. Starting Bid: $6700 Maryam Eisler (born 1968 in Iran) left her homeland in 1978 along with her family. She settled in Europe and studied in France and then at Wellesley College in the United States, where she received a BA in Political Science in 1989. After obtaining an MBA from Columbia University in New York in 1993, she embarked on an international career in investment banking at Credit Suisse First Boston, followed by a move to marketing at L’Oreal, and then at Estée Lauder. Married with two small children, Eisler turned her attention to a lifelong passion, art, in 2003, when she began collecting contemporary art more seriously. Her particular areas of artistic interest and expertise reside in the fields of Modern British Art, Chinese Contemporary Art and Contemporary Iranian Art. Eisler is both a collector, as well as a patron of the arts, with close affiliations with the newly established British Museum’s Middle Eastern patrons group and the Tate where she co-chairs the MENAAC group (Middle East North Africa Acquisition Committee). She is also closely linked with the Parasol Unit Foundation and the Whitechapel Gallery, where she has contributed to their major expansion programme. More recently, she has assisted with the realisation of the Summer 2009 exhibition, Iran Inside Out, at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York – a first in the United States. Eisler’s curatorial expertise and love of Iranian contemporary art were tested in her contributions, as Curatorial Director, to the making of Different Sames: New Perspectives in Contemporary Iranian Art, published in April 2009 by Thames and Hudson. She has also written on the topic of Iranian Contemporary art for various international art related magazines and catalogues. Aside from her executive editorial role in the creation of Unleashed: Contemporary Art from Turkey, published in April 2010, she was also engaged in the creation of the book entitled, Art and Patronage in the Near and Middle East, published in 2010. She lives with her husband and two children in London.

Dana Nehdaran (born 1982 in Iran) took his given name, Rahmatollah, from his grandfather who was an art, antique and rare gem merchant; however, he has always been known by his Persian name, Dana, meaning wise. His grandparents’ home held a marvelous collection of paintings and antiques and his mother and father were art aficionados, travelling the world to view noted institutional and residential collections. As a child, Nehdaran took great wonder and inspiration from his family’s passion for art and became motivated to study painting after discovering an uncle’s discarded box of art supplies at his grandmother’s house. His mother recognised his passion and talent, nurtured by sharing images from her world travels and enrolled him in private art classes with Hassanpour, a well-known artist who taught Nehdaran the fundamentals of art that would eventually lead him to study painting at the Soureh Art University in Shiraz. Nehdaran’s most recent series of paintings, Esther’s Children, has been shown in Tehran, Dubai and Los Angeles. All of Nehdaran’s paintings have a focus on the tension between past and present. Nehdaran has been a member of the Iranian Painter Association since 2007. Several works by Nehdaran have been sold at auction, including From the Agitations of Pleasure Series sold at the Tehran Auction and the Modern & Contemporary Iranian Art Auction, both in 2014. There have been many articles about Nehdaran, including 14 Iranian Artists Explore Just How Complex Immigration And Identity Can Be, written by Priscilla Frank for The Huffington Post in 2017. Nehdaran has expanded his art internationally and his paintings and video works are available both in public and private collections worldwide including the Armando Reverón Contemporary Art Museum in Caracas-Venezuela 2018 and the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai-UAE.

Maryam Shirinlou (born 1966 in Iran) left Iran following the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and moved to France and the United States until she returned to Iran at the age of 24. Her calligraphic paintings and mixed media collages are inspired by mystical Persian poetry, and are often eloquent reflections on the human form and spiritual condition. Shirinlou has exhibited extensively in Iran and her work has been featured in many international galleries including the Yan-Huang Gallery in Beijing, Mah Gallery in Tehran, Blanche Gallery in Belgium and the Qanat Al Qasaba Cultural Centre in Sharjah. After her return to Iran, Shirinlou became fascinated with the Persian style of lettering and calligraphy which coincided with the discovery of the plays and poems of the Persian mystics. She started to develop an art form using the bold uncontrolled script to convey her understanding of the fundamental truths latent in the mysticism, although she stresses that it is not calligraphy, rather a form of expression, often without specific meaning, yet most capturing and imaginative. Shirinlou’s work today takes the form of mixed media collage, which she likes to use because ‘it has its own surprises allowing for multitudes of layer, texture and fun’. She uses different types of paper, paint, glue and other materials. Her art is refreshingly therapeutic and complex. She is internationally acclaimed and has had many exhibitions inside and outside of Iran at well known galleries, and her recent exhibition at the Day Gallery in Tehran displayed some of her best work to date.

Firouz Farmanfarmaian’s (born 1973 in Iran) works are informed by history and memory. Shirin Tabeshfar (born 1958 in Iran) is a London-based artist. After graduating from the Behzad School of Fine Art in Tehran at the age of 18, Tabeshfar moved to the United Kingdom. She studied Combined Art for two years at Bristol University and then studied for a BA in Graphic Design at the Bath Academy of Art. Tabeshfar began a very successful career in Graphic Design, working for award-winning design consultancies. Driven by her passion, Tabeshfar’s main focus soon became painting as she has always been fascinated by the themes and patterns of her background. She recently developed a series called Semblance, where she reshapes Persian motifs often used to decorate common objects. Each piece makes the familiar unfamiliar, awaiting discovery in the complex texture of the work. Tabeshfar’s paintings often remind one of eastern architecture or a Persian landscape. Josiane Cohanim (born 1956 in Iran) is an artist and translator who grew up in Switzerland and came to the United States as a teenager. She received her BA from Wheaton College in French and Spanish Literature and her MA from Stanford University in French Literature. Her passion for poetry and fiction is only surpassed by her passion for creating art. A self-taught artist, Cohanim’s journey into painting started fourteen years ago. At times a meditative process, at times an emotional one, always an expression of freedom, the world of art offers infinite possibilities for creating. For that reason she has explored oil and acrylic paints, mixed media, photography and clay. She has made use of a variety of tools from sticks to brushes, from sponges to spray bottles. These days, she’s at home with the squeegee, a perfect tool to show the reflection of the sky in water. For the past twelve years, she has developed a keen interest in ancient poetry and mythology. Alaleh Alamir (born 1959 in Iran) comes from a multicultural background. She pursued her higher education in the United States and went on to live in many countries. She presently lives and works in Europe. While one of her greatest sources of inspiration has always been nature, as evident in most of her wide-ranging work, throughout the years she has been exploring different media, showing great versatility of expression. When she eventually turned to etching and engraving, she soon felt very comfortable with the technique and it became a real passion. Even though she turns once and again to traditional themes prominent in classical Persian art forms such as mosaic or stained glass, her approach is cross-cultural, instinctive and conceptual. Alamirâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s substantial body of work addresses what is central to her continual quest â&#x20AC;&#x201C; issues of inner process and sensory perception. She is best known for her installations and presentations in series, in which she weaves different levels of meaning and experience in order to convey a sense of continual flow as well as permanence. Alamir is an elected member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and her work has been extensively presented in solo and group exhibitions.

Fereydoun Ave (born 1945 in Iran) was educated in America at Arizona State University and New York University. Ave has had over 13 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions across the US, the Middle East and Europe. His most famous body of work, from the Rostam and Sohrab series, was exhibited at the Iranian Contemporary Art exhibition in 2001 at the Barbican Art Gallery, London; the first exhibition in Britain to examine the development of Iranian art in the 20 years before and after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Ave is one of the major players in the Iranian art scene. Besides being an artist and avid collector Ave has been responsible for launching the careers of many artists and was the Permanent Artistic Director of 13 Vanak Street Gallery in Tehran from 1984 to 2007. Ave curated the first Magic of Persia Art Auction in Dubai which raised over $1 million in 2007.

Nima Behnoud (born 1976 in Iran) is an Iranian-American artist and Creative Director. He is the first fashion designer who implemented Persian calligraphy in a form of clothing and later on went to create the NIMANY brand in New York. In 1994, Behnoud left Iran for San Francisco to study art and design and soon after his arrival, he began working with several design firms. In 1996 he started working at Colortone, the design house that produced the Apple Computer campaign “Think Different”. Soon after he was hired by Jamison Cawdrey Advertising where he experienced the fashion industry first-hand by art directing photo shoots and campaigns for shopping malls in northern California. After spending five years in San Francisco’s advertising agencies, Behnoud moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in 1999. Behnoud started his career in New York by working as Art Director for L’Oreal Paris, and later joined the activewear brand Nautica as designer and Tourneau’s creative team, creating advertising campaigns and providing design direction. In 2004, after graduating from FIT, a production team was put together and the first series of NIMANY T-shirts were produced. The name NIMANY was created adding New York to his first name to pay homage to the city that inspired his vision. The initial process included hand-picking the garments, opening and re-stitching the cuts, dying the colors through a chemical process and silk screening quotes of Persian poets such as Hafez and Rumi. Behnoud currently lives and works in New York.

Marjaneh Satrapi (born 1969 in Iran) grew up in Tehran and moved to escape the war when she was 14 years old. She went to Vienna where she integrated in French high school. She returned to her home country and studied at the Beaux Arts of Tehran before returning to France in 1994. Satrapi then pursued her studies in the Art Decoratifs of Strasbourg where she encountered Joann Sfar and Christophe Blain, who introduced her to the world of comic strips. Between 2000 and 2003 Satrapi published four volumes of Persepolis. The comic strip was a critical and commercial success. In 2003, she published Broderies, and in 2004 she earned the award of the best album with Poulet aux prunes in Angouleme. Satrapi also writes books for children and participates in musical projects. In 2009, she co-wrote Poney Rose with Philippe Katherine for the album Glamour à mort d’Arielle Dombasle and that same year she illustrated the cover album for Iggy Pop’s Préliminaires. In 2011 Satrapi adapted her book Poulet aux prunes for cinema with the adaptation being shortlisted during the the 68th Mostra de Venise. The film went on to win 1st Prize at the Abu Dhabi and Sao Paulo Film Festivals. Satrapi has gone on to release several more films and has won many prizes. Satrapi has had numerous exhibitions worldwide including MOMA in New York and Arludik Gallery in Paris. In 2013 she exhibited her paintings at the Gallery Jérôme de Noirmont for the first time. She regularly participates in conferences in the most prominent US universities where Persepolis is being studied and is the holder of several doctorats honoris causa as well as being the recipient of the title Knight and an Officer of Arts and Letters. Satrapi is currently working on several projects in films and curating new exhibitions for her paintings.

Jason Noushin (born 1969 in England) spent his youth living in Tehran and moved to Paris, then London after the Iranian Revolution and subsequent war with Iraq. Today he lives and works in Connecticut. Noushin has exhibited internationally, including gallery shows throughout the United States, London, the United Arab Emirates, Monaco and Tehran. He’s been featured widely in the press including Wall Street International, Harper’s Bazaar Arabia and the Huffington Post. He was awarded a solo exhibition in 2010 at The Hammond Museum in Westchester, New York by David McFadden, Chief Curator of The Museum of Arts and Design, NYC. Noushin was selected for the 2016 biennial at the deCordova Museum in Massachusetts to represent Connecticut. His work can be found in numerous private collections in the United States and abroad.

Farnaz Rabieijah (born 1981 in Iran) studied biology at university whilst simultaneously taking art courses in 1999. Rabieijah has attended several courses under the mentorship of Parviz Tanavoli and other art masters and was amongst Parviz Tanavoli’s first group of students. Academically trained as a biologist, Rabieijah joined various courses under leading Iranian contemporary artists including Parviz Tanavoli, Abbas Kiarostami, Maryam Salour and Arab’ali Sherveh. This extensive training gradually allowed her to skillfully tackle various media, including metal (bronze, iron and brass), ceramic, fabric and fiberglass. Rabieijah’s sculptures fall into two main categories: People and Letters. In the People series, the main protagonist is usually a sole figure caught in the existential despair of confronting the world. In her sculptures, words and letters are not merely used for the beauty of alphabet, they symbolise thoughts and beliefs, especially prejudiced and unexamined ones. She has had two solo exhibitions: IRAN sculpture exhibition in 2012 and Cardiac Cycle in 2016 at Shirin Art Gallery. She has also participated in more than 50 group exhibitions and art fairs in Iran and other countries such as the UK, America, Austria, Switzerland, and UAE as well as being an active member of the association of Iranian sculptors. Rabieijah started printmaking in 2015 and her new collections are based on this method combined with her major in plant biology.

Melika Shafahi (born 1984 in Iran) like the rest of her generation, grew up negotiating the paradoxes of contemporary Iranian life: the influence of American consumer culture against the austere religiosity espoused by the state; the divisions between public and private spheres; the development of one of the world’s biggest markets for plastic surgery against official policies that try largely to hide both male and female bodies. After training in photography in Tehran, she studied fine arts in Lyon and now lives in Paris. This formation—one built on contrast and hybridity—has been essential to her work as an artist. Building on those formative years, Shafahi often works by creating meticulously and colorfully staged— one might even say, theatrical—largescale photographs that reflect her own hybridity, combining the lighting and composition typical of Renaissance painting with Persian visual references. In her series, Beautiful People (2014), exhibited in a solo show at Etemad Gallery in Tehran, Shafahi explores Iran’s globalised beauty culture, an aesthetic that itself blurs the lines between artificial and real, fact and fiction, embracing heavy make-up in bold colors, plastic surgery and not to mention steroidsupported body-sculpting. In Red Lipstick Island, Shafahi lets her subjects choose their own props and poses (with the exception of a coat of red lipstick), photographing them against the backdrop of night and the obscurity of darkness. The result is a series of unexpected portraits that not only play with identity and ask what makes the individual, but also suggest our very human fragility in the face of discomfort.

Ali Akbar Sadeghi is a climax figure in the context of Iranian Modern and Contemporary art. He has practiced in many artistic fields and has influenced many genres and artists. He is one of the most prolific and successful Iranian artists of his generation. Sadeghi has participated in over fifty solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. His works have been featured in over eight volumes of monographs and and is part of renowned museums around the world including British Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has been sitting on the jury panels of over ten international biennials and has won numerous international awards for his outstanding animations and designs. In 2009, Sadeghi was recognized by the Ministry of Culture in Iran as an outstanding figure due to his lifetime contributions to Iranian art and culture.

My art is a kind of protest against what is happening in the world today. A protest against perished hopes that disappear with the wind. A protest for the blood that is allegedly shed. A protest for the crying eyes of children whose short lives donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow dreams to materialise. A protest for the worried hearts of fathers and mothers, embracing their little children who embark the death boats to haven countries. A protest for the lives of immigrants and refugees - a tree whose roots are left in the bleeding soil of their home countries, whose leaves fall onto strange ground. In my art, everyday virtues fight with vice. But, I am sure, that virtue will ultimately conquer. My calligraphic letters dance and say yeah! Life is beautiful and still worth the fight.

Katayoun Rouhi (born 1965 in Shiraz, Iran) received his degree in painting from the École des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1991 and received a doctorate in 2003 in aesthetics and sciences of art from the Sorbonne. Her practice focuses on the essence of poetry, combining its aural qualities with a unique pictorial quality. Rouhi is concerned with the poësis of painting, its very beginning, and searches for the essential link between poetry and representation. An effort to create a singular being in each of her paintings is achieved through the memories imbued in the work and the intricate and playful details that fill her works drawing the viewer ever closer and revealing only gradually its true being. Rouhi has exhibited widely across the Middle East and Europe, and her works can be seen in the collections of the Polychronopoulos Foundation, Athens and the Méshkinfam Foundation and Museum, Shiraz, among others. “I make out a singular being in my paintings. This singularity is achieved through memory, a kind of game where the image gradually appears. It comes into existence by the way it is made, thanks to the closeness of the viewer. This is part of a series of work around Na Koja Abad.”

Shirin Neshat is an Iranian-born artist and filmmaker living in New York. Neshat’s early photographic works include the Women of Allah series (1993–1997), which explored the question of gender in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. Her subsequent video works departed from overtly political content or critique in favor of more poetic imagery and complex human narratives. Neshat continues to explore and experiment with the mediums of photography, video and film. Her most recent bodies of work include the photographic series The Book of Kings (2012), The Home of My Eyes (2015) and the trilogy Dreamers comprised of three video installations: Illusions and Mirrors (2013), Roja (2016), and Sarah (2016). In 2017, Neshat directed her first opera, AIDA at the Salzburg Music Festival, in Austria. The Life Book is a survey of Ali Akbar Sadeghi’s seminal works, which moulded his artistic aesthetics over two decades, resulting in substantial reforms in the history of Iranian art. In this era, he experimented with various media and techniques such as graphic design, vitrail, film and etc., and re-examined many different genres and schools of art. Reviewing this phase of his activities reveal certain aspects of the artistic and sociological history of Iran during 1950’s to late 1970’s

The Love Book is a survey of Ali Akbar Sadeghi’s paintings, starting with series “Myth & Math” which took almost thirty years to be finished. His other series of works such as Coalition, Nails, Rebirth and Camouflage… gives a precise insight to artist’s fantastic surreal world.

The Lost Book is an anthology of Ali Akbar Sadeghi’s poetry, written between 2005 & 2006 during his bout of severe depression, when he was unable to pick up his brush and paint. The sense behind his poetry is to be vague about and naive of the world surrounding us. Each poem is accompanied by a small drawing composed of elements mentioned in the poem. The poems were born after the “Nail” series, when the artist was exhausted for painting. The “Rebirth” series is a result of hope he gained after his poetry period.

On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price no later than Friday 28th September 2018 in US Dollars by cheques or wire transfer. All lots will be transferred to the Cooke’s Crating warehouse in Los Angeles, and will be released to the purchaser upon receipt of full payment to the Charity. Storage and handling fees will apply from Thursday 15th November 2018 at a minimum monthly storage charge of US$80 and are the sole responsibility of the purchaser. All pickup and delivery arrangements must be made by the purchaser with Cooke’s Crating. (c) In the case of order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Bonhams and the Charity are not responsible for any errors or omissions in connection with such bids. (d) All lots are offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. Bonhams may implement such reserve by bidding up to the reserve on behalf of the Charity. Cookies Crating is a full service art handling company and can help to arrange the delivery of your purchased items.
