Shirley Elghanian We are delighted to be back in Monte Carlo, where we have been so warmly welcomed, for our second gala fundraiser. It has been an amazing and incredibly strong year for Magic of Persia (MOP), despite several challenges. Last autumn, we were thrilled to announce the 2017 edition of the Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize (MOP CAP). For me, this marks a particular achievement due to the unexpected hurdles we have faced, not only in its launch, but also in the execution of this, our fifth edition of the prize. There was a moment that the outlook seemed grim, as plans to send the judges of MOP CAP 2017 to Tehran were unexpectedly aborted due to the political climate. However, with some creative thinking by the MOP team, an out-of-the-box solution was found and we were able to swiftly arrange for the judges to reconvene in London. It was thanks to the generosity of Bonhams that the deliberation finally took place in one of their conference rooms. As such, we look forward with particular excitement to the exhibition of MOP CAP 2017 finalists this October during Frieze week at Bonhams in London. No matter what the challenges, our number one priority is to make a difference to the lives of these talented, young contemporary artists, and, as the saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way! Other achievements in the past year include our participation at artmonte-carlo in May, at which our stand received the prestigious ‘Prix Off FP Journe 2018’ prize. A record number of visitors attended our stand, including His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. We are also eagerly anticipating our exciting activities in Los Angeles this September. At our Gala there, we will be honouring none other than the highly distinguished and generous artist, Shirin Neshat. She will also be taking part in a panel discussion on her oeuvre, held in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). We will then be screening Neshat’s film, ‘Looking For Oum Kulthum’, at the British Museum in London the following month. It is thanks to the amazing efforts of supporters such as Shirin Neshat, and partner institutions like LACMA and the British Museum that we are able to do all that we do. I would also like to thank one particular individual, for his friendship and immeasurable and ongoing support of MOP. He has arguably been the greatest sponsor of all, our guest of honour, Ali Bakhtiar. Without his tireless generosity, we would not have the MAGIC in each and every Gala. With a small team of professionals and dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly on our programmes, new ideas are born and executed instantly and efficiently. Since 2004, Magic of Persia (MOP) has operated on the cutting edge of Iranian art, carving a path for artists to present their work to an international audience. Through various programmes, the charity has created a platform for Iranian artists living inside and outside of Iran to have their voices heard through the universal language of art. MOP has established numerous projects in partnership with worldclass institutions in the UK, UAE, Europe and the US. KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Nazenin Ansari Nazenin Ansari is a British-Iranian journalist and a mother of two daughters. She is the Managing Editor of Kayhan-London and Kayhan-Life independent media outlets focusing on news and culture in Iran and the Middle East in Persian and English. Nazenin has contributed to international media outlets including BBC, SKY, France24, TRT, Al Arabiya and Al-Jazeera. She was the London Producer and Chief Correspondent for VOA Persian and moderated a bi-weekly roundtable discussion on Manoto Television called “In Hafteh.” A Trustee of the Foreign Press Association in London and Persia Educational Foundation, she serves on the Board of Directors of Encyclopaedia Iranica at Columbia University. Previously, she served as the President and Vice President the Foreign Press Association in London. Nazenin was also one of the Judges of the UK Parliamentary Press Gallery Awards for journalists considered to have made the greatest contributions internationally to the ‘protection, promotion and perpetuation’ of parliamentary democracy. As an expert on international affairs, she has been a guest speaker at conferences organised by research institutes and think tanks. She coedited the Foreign Policy Centre’s Iran Human Rights Review: Access to Information on the emergence of access to information as a pivotal element in promoting and protecting the human rights movement. Nazenin has worked with and been a member of a number of educational and charitable foundations, including the Friends of Persian Language Society at Cambridge, Benefactors of Kahrizak, the Iran Heritage Foundation, the award-winning Mihan Foundation, the Popli Khalatbari Foundation and Magic of Persia. She is a member of Chatham House and the International Institute for Strategic Studies. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University in Public Affairs and Government and Master of Arts degree from Georgetown University in International Relations and Comparative Politics.

Hugh Edmeades

Hugh Edmeades Hugh took his first auction for Christie’s in 1984 and has since conducted 2,500 more, selling some 300,000 lots for a total sum of £2.6 billion. He has sold 300 lots in excess of £1 million. The highlight of his career in the rostrum came in Hong Kong in November 2014 when he sold a 15th Century Chinese Imperial embroidered silk Thangka for HK$348 million (£28.9 million), the world record for any Chinese work of art, sold by an international auction house. Hugh is a much sought after auctioneer for high profile national and international charity auctions and throughout his career has conducted over 790 sales raising in excess of £89 million for numerous charitable causes. His charity work has taken him around the world, including Bahrain, Chandigarh, Moscow, New Delhi, Paris, New York, Geneva, Monaco, Dubai, Beirut, Zurich, Doha, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Mumbai, and Casablanca. In 2005, he was chosen to conduct the BBC’s inaugural televised celebrity auction in aid of Children in Need. In 2008, he conducted the auction for Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Gala in London, selling the eight lots for a total of £4.3 million. Hugh joined Christie’s in 1978 as a furniture specialist. In 1984, he became Head of the Furniture Department at Christie’s South Kensington. In 1990, Hugh became Director of Specialist Departments and then after three years as Deputy Chairman, he was appointed Chairman of Christie’s South Kensington in 1999. In 2006 Hugh was appointed as Christie’s International Auctioneer.

Bahar Sabzevari (born 1980 in Iran) spent most of her life in Iran before leaving for Paris in 2003 to study and experience art in Europe. She moved to New York in 2012, where she studied for an MFA at the New York Academy of Art. Sabzevari’s works have become a testimony to the weight religion has put on Iranian society and the duality and contradictions of contemporary Iranian life by using calligraphy, some religious details, characters and symbols to show the protest against restrictions. By depicting herself in most of her works, Sabzevari expresses the conflict between a woman’s role in Islam and her everyday existence. She has been the recipient of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Residency in Beijing, China in the summer of 2017. Sabzevari lives and works in New York.

Peyman Shafieezadeh (born 1983 in Iran) graduated from Azad University of Tehran, Faculty of Art and Architecture. He has had four solo exhibitions and participated in more than thirty group exhibitions and biennales in Iran, America, China, Bulgaria, Turkey, Austria, Kuwait and many other countries. The existing paradox in his transitioning environment, challenging the paradigms and his nation’s public figures, symbols, traditions and conventions and his unusual use of different materials and elements have made Shafieezadeh renowned in his home country, Iran. Shafieezadeh’s thorough regard to the universe is a matter that indicates itself through the simplicity of his artworks and amazingly challenges the cultural issues of his surrounding society into theoretical and ontological depths, and then again, shares them with the audience in a quiet, unpretentious appearance. From this point of view, it is clearly observed that he is truly progressing alongside contemporary art.

Younes Faghihi (born 1981 in Iran) is a musician and a painter who uses the forms, movements and composition of traditional Persian calligraphy and expresses his own art in a burst of universality. There is also an eternal message of peace and love hidden behind his works. After graduating in graphic design in 1999, Faghihi received a professional certificate in calligraphy from the Iranian Society of Calligraphy in 2001. He earned his degree in visual arts and decided to devote himself to this field in a professional and academic setting and later obtained a Masters Degree in Advertising Management from the Eastern Mediterranean University. In 2010, Faghihi was invited to carry out artistic research at the CitĂŠ Internationale des Arts in Paris and stayed there for 8 years. This was an experience that was decisive and strongly inspired Faghihi.

Fereydoun Omidi (born 1967 in Iran) received a BA in painting from Azad University, Tehran in 1993 and his MA in painting from the University of Art, Tehran five years later. His calligraphic works have been widely acclaimed for their luxurious form and texture. Working primarily with oil colour, his paintings are thick and rich in volume, engaging viewers in their attempt to decipher the combination of rhythmic repetition and spontaneous texture. Omidi uses a palette-knife to disfigure the letters he creates, transforming them from their original forms for depth and new meaning. His solo exhibitions include Flags at Opera Gallery, London in 2014, Calligraphy at Opera Gallery, Paris in 2013 and XVA Gallery, Dubai in 2008. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions at Total Art Gallery in Dubai, Lajevardi Foundation in Tehran, Nicolas Flamel Gallery in Paris, the Niavaran Cultural Centre in Tehran, and the Cite des Arts, Paris amongst others.

Maryam Rastghalam (born 1981 in Iran) studied Graphics in Tehran’s Art and Architectural Azad University. She then moved to Italy to continue her studies in Art and after graduating in decoration, she moved to Milan to further her education by receiving a Masters of Visual Arts from the Fine Art Academy. Inspired by the depths of her dreams & nightmares, her fears & doubts, hopes & worries, myths, persian miniatures & architecture, nature and objects, Rastghalam combines these influences to create multi-layered works that speak to both her Iranian heritage and her experiences of living abroad in Europe. Rastghalam’s illustrations and paintings combine a variety of media, including watercolour, ink and collage. She currently lives and works in Milan.

Hojat Amani (born 1978 In Iran) is a multi-talented artist, working in a variety of media and styles, be it photography, painting, calligraphy, figurative or still life subject matter. He is unique, in that he has the ability to make Iranian art accessible to an international audience. Instantly recognisable as Iranian, he does not dwell on the negative aspects of the culture, from which so many of his fellow artists draw their inspiration. Raised in a very traditional family, Amani was familiarised with traditional art, and began working as a calligrapher during his teenage years. To the artist, calligraphy has been a signifier of liberation and purification, which through its repetition he feels acts as a mantra. Wanting to move away from traditional forms of art, Amani left home in search of contemporary methods of expression. During his time at university, he was introduced to art history, and became interested in integrating the modern and traditional. His goal was to give viewers a cathartic purification and a promise of freedom from the difficulties of contemporary life. Amani believes the commodification of art is the primary preoccupation of many, rather than appreciation of artistic merit. Amani believes that art represents beauty and has a much deeper purpose than that of just a material or financial purchase and therefore uses his art as a way of recreating his imagination and sharing it with others. Although Amani has experienced the hardships which are a result of war, he specifically chooses not to focus on it in his work. He prefers to create beautiful images, intending to provide some form of relief and escapism from the harsh realities of many of his countrymen. He states, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The success of the traditional artist comes when people can approach his art and find grace, pleasure and peace in it.â&#x20AC;?

Ali Razavi (born 1977 in Tehran, Iran) studied mechanics in Iran. His interest in graffiti and graphic design led to 18 years of practice in the field. Pooya Aryanpour (born 1971 in Iran) grew up in Iran; a vast country with an ancient culture. In the last three decades, Iran’s history has been witness to a host of upheavals, including revolution, war, nationwide protests, international sanctions and an unstable economy. Aryanpour grew up in a dissident and liberal family whose father did not believe in the traditional school educational system and therefore Aryanpour did not attend school. Learning tools were provided at home and Aryanpour took to the arts and sports in the years that ensued with art gradually becoming a profession, a language by which he could describe the times he grew up in. Aryanpour always thinks of roots and things that Iranians take pride in. The simple yet striking art of Iranian people was conquered by the vision of invaders time and again therefore turning effective, original and popular art into religiously tailored art. Throughout the years he has been striving to show a different phenomenon with a secret idea: an embodiment of a kind of beauty that is on the surface and close at hand. It is a way for the audience to communicate, not to limit the meaning. Form, to Aryanpour, is a subjective challenge of a distinct and indistinct object. It is distinct because he knows where it is coming from, yet indistinct, as he does not see where it lands. He paints figure-like objects in a traditional way – using methods, techniques and forms embedded in classic Iranian art.

Nima Behnoud (born 1976 in Iran) is an Iranian-American artist and Creative Director. He is the first fashion designer who implemented Persian calligraphy in a form of clothing and later on the creation of the brand NIMANY in New York. In 1994, Behnoud left Iran for San Francisco to study art and design and soon after his arrival, he began working with several design firms. In 1996 he started working at Colortone, the design house that produced the Apple Computer campaign “think different”. Soon after he was hired by Jamison Cawdrey Advertising where he experienced the fashion industry first hand by art directing photo shoots and campaigns for shopping malls in northern California. After spending five years in San Francisco’s advertising agencies, Behnoud moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in 1999. Behnoud started his career in New York by working as Art Director for L’Oreal Paris, and later joined the activewear brand Nautica as designer and Tourneau’s creative team creating advertising campaigns and providing design direction. In 2004 after graduating from FIT, a production team was put together and the first series of NIMANY T-shirts were produced. The name NIMANY was created by adding New York to his first name to pay homage to the city that inspired his vision. The initial process included hand picking the garments, opening and re-stitching the cuts, dying the colors through a chemical process and silk screening quotes of Persian poets such as Hafez and Rumi. Behnoud currently lives and works in New York.

Peybak (Peyman Barabadi and Babak Alebrahim Dehkordi, born 1984, Iran) is the pseudonym of two artists have been working together as the “unified duo” of Peybak since December 2001. They start work on every piece together, working on different parts, until both declare it finished. Peybak’s works are inspired by Persian poetry and mythology.

Josiane Cohanim (born 1956 in Iran) is an artist and translator who grew up in Switzerland and came to the United States as a teenager. She received her BA from Wheaton College in French and Spanish Literature and her MA from Stanford University in French Literature. Her passion for poetry and fiction is only surpassed by her passion for creating art. A self-taught artist, Cohanim’s journey into painting started fourteen years ago. At times a meditative process, at times an emotional one, always an expression of freedom, the world of art offers infinite possibilities for creating. For that reason she has dabbled in oil and acrylic paints, mixed media, photography and clay. She has made use of a variety of tools from sticks to brushes, from sponges to spray bottles. These days, she’s at home with the squeegee, a perfect tool to show the reflection of the sky in water. In her work, Cohanim’s focus is less on reproducing the observed than on exploring the mysteries of life and nature. For the past twelve years, she has developed a keen interest in ancient poetry and mythology. After in depth readings of Ferdowsi’s epic poem, The Shahnameh, she is presently working on a contemporary English translation.

Melika Shafahi (born 1984 in Iran) like the rest of her generation, grew up negotiating the paradoxes of contemporary Iranian life: the influence of American consumer culture against the austere religiosity espoused by the state; the divisions between public and private spheres; the development of one of the world’s biggest markets for plastic surgery against official policies that try largely to hide both male and female bodies. After training in photography in Tehran, she studied fine arts in Lyon and now lives in Paris. This formation—one built on contrast and hybridity—has been essential to her work as an artist. Building on those formative years, Shafahi often works by creating meticulously and colorfully staged— one might even say, theatrical—largescale photographs that reflect her own hybridity, combining the lighting and composition typical of Renaissance painting with Persian visual references. In her series, Beautiful People (2014), exhibited in a solo show at Etemad Gallery in Tehran, Shafahi explored Iran’s globalised beauty culture, an aesthetic that itself blurs the lines between artificial and real, fact and fiction, embracing heavy make-up in bold colors, plastic surgery and not to mention steroidsupported body-sculpting. In Red Lipstick Island, Shafahi let her subjects choose their own props and poses (with the exception of a coat of red lipstick), photographing them against the backdrop of night and the obscurity of darkness. The result is a series of unexpected portraits that not only play with identity and ask what makes the individual, but also suggest our very human fragility in the face of discomfort.

Farbod Mehr (born 1991 in Iran) is an Iranian artist and architect based in London. After graduating with a degree in Architecture from Central Saint Martins, Mehr began to venture into the world of graphic design and illustration, combining with it his interests of avantgarde architecture and Persian mysticism. His work is at the crux of architecture, design, geometry, computer-generated graphics, personal experience and Persian visual culture: an amalgam of theoretical knowledge spanning from past to present. Mehr cites his main inspiration as the contemporary ability to reflect on his Persian roots and identity. Mehr founded the art line The Bad Shepherd, and worked as architectural design director at studioINTEGRATE, a London-based architecture and design studio. He is currently working to build up a platform and Augmented Reality magazine for emerging Iranian artists and designers, Hypersia. Dana Nehdaran (born 1982 in Iran) took his given name, Rahmatollah, from his grandfather who was an art, antique and rare gem merchant; however, he has always been known by his Persian name, Dana, meaning wise. His grandparents’ home held a marvelous collection of paintings and antiques and his mother and father were art aficionados, travelling the world to view noted institutional and residential collections. As a child, Nehdaran took great wonder and inspiration from this family’s passion for art and became motivated to study painting after discovering an uncle’s discarded box of art supplies at his grandmother’s house. His mother recognised his passion and talent, nurtured by sharing images from her world travels and enrolled him in private art classes with Hassanpour, a well-known artist who taught Nehdaran the fundamentals of art that would eventually lead him to study painting at the Soureh Art University in Shiraz. Nehdaran’s most recent series of paintings, Esther’s Children, has been shown in Tehran, Dubai and Los Angeles. All of Nehdaran’s paintings have a focus on the tension between past and present. Nehdaran has been a member of the Iranian Painter Association since 2007. Several works by Nehdaran have been sold at auction, including From the Agitations of Pleasure Series sold at the Tehran Auction and the Modern & Contemporary Iranian Art Auction both in 2014. There have been many articles about Nehdaran, including 14 Iranian Artists Explore Just How Complex Immigration And Identity Can Be, written by Priscilla Frank for The Huffington Post in 2017. Nehdaran has expanded his art internationally and his paintings and video works are available both in public and private collections worldwide including the Armando Reverón Contemporary Art Museum in Caracas-Venezuela, and the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai-UAE.

A protest for blood with which, is being allegedly shed. Protestation for crying eyes, and children whose short lives don’t prolong for their dreams to materialise. Protestation for fathers and mothers’ worried hearts that embracing their little children and triggering a voyage with death boat to immigrate toward haven countries. Protestation for the refugees and immigrants’ lives- tree, which its roots were left back in to the bleeding soil of their home countries, and its leaves are fallen on to the strange ground. In my artworks, everyday virtues are fighting with vices. But, I am sure the virtue ultimately will conquer over the vice. My calligraphic letters are dancing to quote yeah! The life is beautiful and it still worth standing and fighting for.

Shadi Rezaei (born 1986 in Iran) is a London-based interdisciplinary artist. She received her BA in Graphic Design from the University of Art in Tehran and her MFA in Fine Arts from UAL, Chelsea College of Arts and Design in London, 2017. Rezaei’s passion for visual arts comprises of an exploration of the relationships between tradition and contemporary art. Her works bring a series of mutable and spontaneous gestures that negotiate the relationship between stability and uncertainty. In her practice, Rezaei explores her own eidetic memory. A wide range of themes such as power, gender, animalism/humanity, oddity/beauty and identity are depicted in her work. Her journey of examination and exploration is carried out through various creative media and the use of unconventional materials, which enable her to create and question metaphoric expressions of the untold. The narratives she wishes to communicate determine the medium she chooses to work in. Shokoufeh Malekkiani (born 1977 in Iran) is an award-winning Iranian photographer, lawyer, philanthropist and humanitarian activist, who has dedicated her career, law and life to overcoming hunger. She uses art and photography to draw attention to matters that are of essential importance and yet easily overlooked. Malekkianiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s determination has helped her win many national and international awards proving her unremitting enthusiasm and passion in her mission to enhance the living conditions of the underprivileged. In addition, her work was chosen to be included in the Oscars gift bag of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards in 2011, and was dedicated to the United Nations World Food Program. Malekkiani has been the recipient of notable awards, including 2nd place in the Canadian Association for Photographic Art Annual Digital Competition in 2006, and other awards in America, England and Belgium. Malekkiani was included as the only representative of Iran in the Berlin Foto Biennale and the 4th Biennial of Fine Art Documentary Photography in 2016. She was recently a finalist for the 8th Julia Margaret Cameron Award in 2016 at The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards in Europe and was given Honorable Mention at the 11th Annual Black and White Spider Awards in America. Her works have appeared in many magazines around the world and she has appeared as the spotlight artist in ARTisSpectrum magazine in New York in 2014. Since 2009 Malekkiani has worked unconditionally and relentlessly to focus attention and diminish the anguish related to hunger across the world. Towards this mission, she has made numerous donations to the United Nations to aid this purpose and the benefits of her first photography exhibition were dedicated to building a school in northern Iran.

Hanieh Delecroix (born 1974 in Iran) moved to Paris at the age of three. Though excelling in the performing and visual arts at school, she decided to study psychology at the University of Surrey in England from 1997 to 1998. Delacroix then returned to Paris to study at the University of Paris X Nanterre where she received her Diploma in Clinical and Pathological Psychology and Cognitive and Emotional Processes. She has also attained her doctorate from LASI (Laboratory for Somatic and Identity Issues). She has worked in hospitals as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist specialising in infants and adolescents, as well as adults suffering from chronic illnesses. While working as a clinician she studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and now writes, sculpts and paints alongside her psychoanalytic practice. The relationship between the mind and the body, especially the mind of a damaged body, is central to her art. Shades of black and blue predominate her paintings, particularly intense hues of cobalt, ultramarine, and cerulean, which she usually applies with a palette knife in sweeping strokes, creating abstract forms that look written. She favours translucent paper, chosen for its fragility and its symbolic, skin-like quality. A crack in the paint or a tear in the paper become like a scar, she explains. “That’s life. Shirin Tabeshfar (born 1958 in Iran) is a London-based artist. After graduating from the Behzad School of Fine Art in Tehran at the age of 18, Tabeshfar moved to the United Kingdom. She studied Combined Art for two years in Bristol University and then studied for a BA in Graphic Design at the Bath Academy of Art. Tabeshfar began a very successful career in Graphic Design, working for award winning design consultancies. Driven by her passion, Tabeshfar’s main focus soon became painting as she has always been fascinated by the themes and patterns of her background. She recently developed a series called Semblance, where she reshapes Persian motifs often used to decorate common objects. Each piece makes the familiar unfamiliar, awaiting discovery in the complex texture of the work. Tabeshfar’s paintings often remind one of eastern architecture or a Persian landscape. Her paintings have been exhibited widely with shows at the Josie Eastwood Fine Art Gallery, the Tabernacle Gallery, the Fairfax Gallery, Cricket Fine Art and The Royal College of Art. Dariush Nehdaran (born 1984 in Iran) is a contemporary visual artist who fearlessly defies the rules in order to bring multiple and complex meanings to his work. Through rhythmic juxtaposed images containing a variety of perspectives, he constructs a world between dream and reality and plays with clarity and depth to suggest an alternative way of seeing things. Throughout his childhood, Nehdaran suffered from poor eyesight, but chose not to wear glasses to avoid the stigma of getting bullied. During that time, he experienced and viewed the world in a blurry and ambiguous way. When he became a teenager, the use of his grandfather’s camera enabled him to see the world clearly for the first time in his life. The fact that he saw the world blurry through his own eyes and clear through the lens of the camera and the printed images has driven him to explore the subject of amphibology as the main topic in his work. By doing so, he has created a unique style that demands his viewers’ attention and focus as part of the resolution in his work. Nehdaran currently lives in San Francisco but has expanded his art internationally. His photographs and video works are available both in public and private collections worldwide including the Armando Reverón Contemporary Art Museum in Caracas-Venezuela (2018), LACMA in the US (2016), and the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai-UAE (2012). Mohammad Bahabadi (born 1972 in Iran) hails from a town that lies at the junction of Yazd, Kerman and Khorasan in Iran. His name draws on the geography of the region, an area next to the Lut Desert. This was followed by the University of Arts where he sought to study handicrafts, before moving to the University of Tehran, where he graduated in the field of sculpture.

Natasha Riboud (born 1986 in America) developed a love of exploring the world and taking pictures early in her life. After attending Tulane University for a year, she changed directions and went to work as a teacher in rural Thailand, camera in hand. She continued her formal education in the arts later, returning to study at Sarah Lawrence College and later taking courses and ultimately working at the International Center of Photography in NYC. She worked both in the studio and in the darkroom for Arthur Elgort, printing toned silver gelatin prints for exhibition. For the past three years Riboud has been travelling the world once again, from Italy to Japan to Tanzania to Patagonia, accumulating photographs, gathering insights, and being humbled by different cultures and the kindness of people across our planet. She is currently working photographing the rebranding of a French bank called Baobab, showing the positive impact of microcredit loans for entrepreneurship in many African countries. Riboud currently lives in Mallorca with her husband and three children.

Fereydoun Ave (born 1945 in Iran) was educated in America at Arizona State University and New York University. Ave has had over 13 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions across the US, the Middle East and Europe. His most famous body of work, from the Rostam and Sohrab series, was exhibited at the Iranian Contemporary Art exhibition in 2001 at the Barbican Art Gallery, London; the first exhibition in Britain to examine the development of Iranian art in the 20 years before and after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Ave is one of the major players in the Iranian art scene. Besides being an avid collector and artist, Ave has been responsible for launching the careers of many artists, and was the Permanent Artistic Director of 13 Vanak Street Gallery in Tehran from 1984 to 2007. Ave curated the first Magic of Persia Art Auction in Dubai which raised over $1 million in 2007.

Mehdi Farhadian (born 1980 in Iran) seeks to integrate abstract and figurative features to create dreamlike landscapes and city views, inhabited by people and animals commonly engaged in enigmatic acts through his work. The idiosyncratic iconography depicted in his paintings comes from different sources such as the overflowing vegetation of the Khazar bank in Northern Iran, famous Iranian buildings and historical figures, and Iranian middle-class life of the mid-20th century. Farhadian has an MA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran and has been teaching at the Elm o Farhang (Science and Culture) University in Tehran since 2010. Alaleh Alamir (born 1959 in Iran) comes from a multicultural background. She pursued her higher education in the United States and went on to live in many countries. She presently lives and works in Europe. While one of her greatest sources of inspiration has always been nature, as evident in most of her wide-ranging work, throughout the years she has been exploring different media, showing great versatility of expression. When she eventually turned to etching and engraving, she soon felt very comfortable with the technique and it became a real passion. Even though she turns once and again to traditional themes prominent in classical Persian art forms such as mosaic or stained glass, her approach is cross-cultural, instinctive and conceptual. Alamir’s substantial body of work addresses what is central to her continual quest – issues of inner process and sensory perception. She is best known for her installations and presentations in series, in which she weaves different levels of meaning and experience in order to convey a sense of continual flow as well as permanence. Alamir is an elected member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and her work has been extensively presented in solo and group exhibitions.

Siavash Talaei (born 1980 in Iran) has been living and working between Italy and Iran since 2006. He holds a BA in Painting from Azad University, Tehran, a BA in Painting and Drawing as well as an MA in Visual Arts and New Forms of Expression from The Academy of Fine Arts of Florence. Talaei has participated in various group exhibitions in Iran, Italy, Brazil, the UAE and USA. He had a recent solo exhibition at O Gallery in Tehran in 2018. Through his paintings, Talaei expresses a sophisticated and nuanced experience of life in Iran, creating a consistent body of work that draws on a surprisingly wide range of influences, from his childhood in post-revolutionary Tehran to his long training in Classical and Renaissance Art in The Florence Academy. The viewer is drawn into a contrived pictorial world peopled with figures of an oppressive and stifling stillness, and left critical of possible schematic notions and suggested narratives: a world disturbingly populated with images familiar but unknown, in stark contrast to our comfortably familiar surroundings. Talaei’s paintings carry a suggestion of doubt about both his self-image and worldview, as well as his faith in the future. His work gives expression to personal defence mechanisms, articulating his acceptance of doubt, wherein the experience of uncertainty transcends being a mere threat and instead becomes the precondition to his freedom. It brings to mind Giacometti’s statement: “I have the impression or the illusion that I make progress every day. That motivates me.”

Nowadays art movements are not concealed from anyone and we are all exposed to different art works and ideas. However this generosity, made possible by digital technology, has given rise to some contradictions. On the one hand artists from all around the world have opened different windows to the world which is accessible for everyone; on the other hand finding new approaches has become a more difficult and inaccessible task. However the paintings by Alireza Chalipa show promise of overcoming this difficulty. Watching the lives we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually witness and balancing them to what we see in our everyday lives as well as creating disorder into the perspective of the canvas, but rather subtly, and also putting contemporary man into the places from yesterday, all create a kind of de-familiarisation that is only intelligible to him. His paintings upset the viewerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily routines and encourage her to rediscover herself and her environment. Abbas Kiarostami (1940 - 2016, Iran) became one of the most important figures in post-revolution contemporary Iranian film. Kiarostami studied Fine Arts at the University of Tehran. He worked as a designer and illustrator throughout the 1960’s in advertising, making commercials, designing posters, creating credit titles for films and illustrating children’s books. In 1969 Kiarostami founded the film department at the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. The department’s debut production was Kiarostami’s own first film, Bread and Alley. He ran the department for five years making educational films for children, which helped him form his basic approach to cinema. Kiarostami made more than 20 films, including fiction features, educational shorts, feature-length documentaries and a series of films for television. He has also written screenplays for other directors. He was awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival for his Taste of Cherry in 1997 and the Un Certain Regard award in 1992 at Cannes. He was also a published poet and a photographer and had numerous gallery exhibitions of his photography, short films and poetry.

Unconditional Pictures is honoured to be producing the life of internationally loved sportsman Mansour Bahrami - a true life story, unique yet universal - & made for the screen. As a little boy in Tehran, Mansour fell in love with tennis, but was forbidden to play. Undeterred, he taught himself at the bottom of an empty swimming pool, using a plank of wood, a frying pan - anything he could find. From his beloved Tehran to wandering the streets of Paris penniless, this charismatic showman somehow survives - his indomitable spirit, courage and heart keeping his hope alive. This moving, entertaining & truly inspiring story is living proof that against every obstacle destiny can be met & dreams can be fulfilled.

Christie’s and the Charity reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Charity’s sale records shall be conclusive in all respects. 4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.

5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price no later than Saturday 18 August 2018 in Euros by cheques or wire transfer. All lots will be transferred to the ANDRE CHENUE warehouse in Nice, and will be released to the purchaser upon receipt of full payment to the Charity. Storage and handling fees will apply from Saturday 18 August 2018 at a minimum monthly storage charge of Euro 60 and are the sole responsibility of the purchaser. All pickup and delivery arrangements must be made by the purchaser with ANDRE CHENUE*. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to the Charity by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, the Charity at their option, may either (a) cancel the sale, or (b) resell the property on three days’ notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages. 6.

Any cheques and wire transfers should be payable to the MOP Foundation.

7. (a) If a prospective buyer gives Christie’s instructions to bid on his/her behalf, Christie’s shall use reasonable efforts to do so, provided these instructions are received no later than 24 hours before the sale. (b) If Christie’s receives commission bids on a particular artwork for identical amounts, and at auction these bids are the highest bids for the Lot, it will be sold to the person whose bid was received first. (c) In the case of order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Christie’s and the Charity are not responsible for any errors or omissions in connection with such bids. (b) All lots are offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. Christie’s may implement such reserve by bidding up to the reserve on behalf of the Charity. ANDRE CHENUE is a full service art handling company and can help to arrange the delivery of your purchased items.
