About Us Over the past 13 years Magic of Persia Foundation has operated on the cutting edge of Iranian art, carving a path for artists to present their work to an international audience. Through various programmes the charity has created a platform for Iranian artists living inside and outside of Iran to have their voices heard through the universal language of art. mop has established numerous projects in partnership with world-class institutions in the uk, uae, usa, and Iran. Through the dynamism and expertise of mopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team, projects are delivered to a diverse audience. Hugh took his ﬁrst auction for Christie’s in 1984 and has since conducted 2,400 more, selling some 300,000 lots for a total sum of £2.3 billion. He has sold 258 lots in excess of £1 million. The highlight of his career in the rostrum came in Hong Kong in November 2014 when he sold a 15th Century Chinese Imperial embroidered silk Thangka for HK$348 million (£28.9 million), the world record for any Chinese work of art sold by an international auction house. Hugh is a much sought after auctioneer for high proﬁ le national and international charity auctions and throughout his career has conducted over 700 sales raising in excess of £83 million for numerous charitable causes. His charity work has taken him around the world, including Bahrain, Chandigarh, Moscow, New Delhi, Paris, New York, Geneva, Monaco, Dubai, Beirut, Zurich, Doha, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Casablanca. In 2005, he was chosen to conduct the BBC’s inaugural televised celebrity auction in aid of Children in Need. In 2008, he conducted the auction for Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Gala in London, selling the eight lots for a total of £4.3 million. Hugh joined Christie’s in 1978 as a furniture specialist. In 1984, he became Head of the Furniture Department at Christie’s South Kensington. In 1990, Hugh became Director of Specialist Departments and then after three years as Deputy Chairman, he was appointed Chairman of Christie’s South Kensington in 1999. In 2006 Hugh was appointed Christie’s International Auctioneer.

Rasoul Akbarlou (born 1985 in Khoy, Iranian Azerbaijan) received his BA in painting from Shahed University, followed by an MA in the same ﬁeld from Tehran University of Art. He also completed a diploma at the Society of Calligraphy in Tehran. Akbarlou’s unique visual language incorporates Persian script into visually powerful compositions. Letters are broken up and rearranged in colour and space, harnessing the power of the alphabet to convey emotions through abstract shapes that emerge from the canvas and connect with the viewer. He has participated in several group exhibitions in Tehran, including Shirin Gallery, Imam Ali Museum, Homa Art Gallery and the Visual Art Festival for Young Artists, of which he was a winner

in 2010. His solo exhibitions include Painting and Calligraphy Work at Mah Art Gallery and Atbin Art Gallery in Tehran.

Keyvan Azad (born 1971 in Tehran, Iran) received his mfa in painting from the Islamic Azad University in Tehran in 1997. From the early 2000s onwards, he has since participated in numerous group exhibitions in Tehran, most recently at Haft Samar Gallery, 2016; Zhinous Gallery, 2015; Banafshe Gallery, 2011 and Assar Art Gallery, 2010. Azad is also an accomplished musician who has written scores for film and musical performances, as well as a documentary filmmaker. His film Abass was chosen as the selected film of the Fajr Music Festival in Tehran in 2013 and his film Darakeh won the One Take Film award at the Tehran Street Festival in 2004. Informed by his broad background and intimate relationship with the various

elements in his experience of graphics, ﬁlm, music and painting, his work combines the ancient geometrical forms prevalent in tile work within what he deems a chaotic contemporary world. “The complex geometry of traditional tilework starts from simple shapes and patterns; creating a peaceful sense of unity by duplicating and expanding these elements.”

Niloufar Banisadr (born 1973 in Tehran, Iran) has been living and working in Paris since 2003. She holds a ba in photography from Azad University, Tehran, as well as a ba in cinema and an ma in visual arts from Marc Bloch University, Strasbourg. She also has a diploma in professional photography from Spéos, the Paris-London photographic institute. Banisadr’s controversial series of self portraits, Freud, reﬂects her background and life, focusing on the duality of East and West. The collection Voiles aux Vents (or Sexy Window) is a series of images of her curtains, shot naturally from the outside, displaying some of the artist’s exploratory work with fabrics. Her latest work, My Journeys, is a superimposition of the Freud series that focuses on her journey through Europe and the usa. Banisadr’s work can be found in the collections of institutions including the mam, Rio de Janeiro and the Cooper Cafritz-Duke Ellington Foundation in Washington and have been exhibited at De Mesdag Collectie, and the Van Gogh

Museum in the Netherlands. Her work has also been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Iran, France, the uae, uk and us, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and Turkey. “Most of my art is narrative. Only recently have things become more abstract. My themes are a part of the story of my life, but I am sure that my story and those feelings around my experiences are familiar to many other Iranian women.”

Shiva Eini (born 1984 in Iran) received her certiﬁcate in painting from Varounej University in Russia and a ba in painting from Elm-o-Farhand in Tehran. She has participated in a number of exhibitions at galleries across Iran, including Fereshteh Gallery, Shirin Gallery, Mojdeh Gallery and Aria Gallery (all in Tehran), as well as several group exhibitions in countries such as the uae, Italy and the uk. She began painting at a young age, with her ﬁrst experience as a child on the walls of her kindergarten, a work she called Ant War. Eini’s work has always been an exploration of her identity and an effort to try and answer some of the questions that so heavily weigh on the human mind regarding our purpose and existence.

Magic of persia is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Shiva. Our heartfelt condolences go to her family and friends.

Ghalamdar (born 1994 in Tehran, Iran) currently lives and works in Rotherham, England and is undertaking a ba in Fine Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University. His name, in Farsi, is literally translated as ’the writer’. Growing up in Tehran, Ghalamdar sought to break the monotony of the grey walls that surrounded him, and began leaving his mark on the city’s surfaces, infusing them with colour and pattern. Looking to the Saqqakhaneh movement of the 1960s and 70s for inspiration, his style draws together Shi’i iconography, grafﬁti work, calligraphy and the delicate brush painting of Iranian miniatures (Negar-Gari). However, he avoids the strict rules and preparation rituals of the craft in favour of abstraction, moving beyond traditional calligraphic practice to create works that interlock the aesthetics of both the traditional

form, and ’wild style’ grafﬁti in an amalgamation of two cultures. Commonly, Ghalamdar creates deconstructions of Iranian folklore stories, legends, talismans, superstitions and Iranian culture and tradition as a whole. He takes a critical look at Iranian contemporary identity, particularly within the frame of post-modern philosophy, making his art a personal investigation through Iranian art and history. Ali Nassir (born 1951 in Tehran, Iran) studied fine arts at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin from 1978 – 83 and from 1991–2004. He taught different levels at Hochschule der Künste, Sommerakademie, Paderborn and Technische Fachhochschule in Berlin and was a visiting professor at Tehran and Azad Universities in Tehran in 2005. His first period of work began with a poetic depiction of objects and the human figure, but this gradually developed into a work that was no longer about portraying a world and the objects within it, but rather, about the discovery of other spaces and their position and relationships with each other. He does not attempt to imitate the structural systems of Iranian painting, instead

working in a direct comparison with, and using the inﬂuences of, Western art. This practice engages the artist with artistic possibilities, allowing perspectives that are both unfamiliar and close. In this manner and with hidden layers in his enigmatic works, Nassir investigates human issues on a variety of levels. He has achieved a unique style, and the content of each of his works is connected to the subject of another work and in this way, a chain of works is created whose purpose is to examine the human condition. He has exhibited in various countries worldwide, including Iran, Germany, Poland, the uae, Sweden and Japan with his latest exhibitions held at O Gallery in Tehran and Khak Gallery in Dubai.

Maryam Rastghalam (born 1981 in Esfahan, Iran) studied graphic design at the Art and Architectural Azad University, Tehran. She moved to Florence, Italy to continue her studies, and, after graduating with a degree in decoration moved to Milan where she received an ma in visual art from the Milan Fine Arts Academy, Academia delle belle arti di Brera. Inspired by the depths of her dreams and nightmares, her fears and doubts, hopes and worries, myths, Persian miniatures and architecture, nature and objects, she combines these inﬂuences to create multilayered works that speak both to her Iranian heritage and her experiences of living abroad in Europe. Rastghalam’s illustrations and paintings combine a

variety of media, including watercolour, ink and collage. She currently lives and works in Milan. “In these series of the works cypresses, anthropomorphic ﬁgures are a combination of the ﬁgures and the Cypresses in Persian miniatures. cypresses are seeking for a new garden or territory of peace, solidarity and prosperity.”

Ali Razavi (born 1977 in Tehran, Iran) studied mechanics in Iran. His interest in grafﬁti and graphic design led to 18 years of practice in the ﬁeld. Katayoun Rouhi (born 1965 in Shiraz, Iran) received her degree in painting from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1991 and received a doctorate degree in 2003 in Aesthetics and Sciences of Art from the Sorbonne. Her practice focuses on the essence of poetry, combining its aural qualities with a unique pictorial quality. Rouhi is concerned with the poësis of painting, its very beginning and searches for the essential link between poetry and representation. An effort to create a singular being in each of her paintings is achieved through the memories imbued in the work and the intricate and playful details that ﬁll her works, drawing the viewer ever closer and revealing only gradually its true being. Rouhi has exhibited widely across the Middle East and Europe, and her works can be seen in the collections of the Polychronopoulos Foundation, Athens and the Méshkinfam Foundation and Museum, Shiraz, among others.

“I make out a singular being in my paintings. This singularity is achieved through memory, a kind of game where the image gradually appears. It comes into existence by the way it is made, thanks to the closeness of the viewer. This is part of a series of work around Na Koja Abad.”

Yashar Samimi Mofakham (born 1979 in Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian artist and curator who began his professional career as a painter and printmaker in 1999. He has since held several solo and two-person shows in Iran, Armenia and Dubai and participated in more than 40 group shows nationally and internationally. In 2011, he embarked on a career as a contemporary art curator and ever since, he has curated several shows, working with international galleries, institutions and museums. In 2008 with his partner, Tarlan Raﬁee, he founded Bread & Salt Curatorial Project and ka:v Editions, a publisher devoted to contemporary and modern limited editions, creating prints and multiples by renowned Iranian artists. Yashar’s own works are part of several public and private collections around the world including the British Museum.

Farah Soltani (born 1986 in Tehran, Iran) completed a degree in graphic design at the Saba Technical and Professional School before moving to Dubai to pursue a ba in studio art at The American University in Dubai. Her practice explores representations of the human body as well as an expressive exploration of an ’Easternised’ style of Pop art. Following her studies, she partook in several group exhibitions in Dubai, before she returned to Tehran, where she held her ﬁrst solo exhibition at the Ariana Gallery. This exhibition featured a highly acclaimed performance titled Bubble Gum Reading by Mohamad Rahmanian, a performance inspired by a sense of nostalgia, history and storytelling wrapped in Soltani’s portrayals of bubble gum wrappings in her paintings.

Inspired by the pictures taken by hh Prince Reza Pahlavi, some of which were published in 1986 in Crépuscules, Photographies Reza Pahlavi, hm created a series of paintings. These limited edition lithographs of the paintings have been created in the remembrance of Prince Alireza Pahlavi.

London-based photographer Henry Dallal (born 1955 in Tehran, Iran) was given his ﬁrst camera, a box brownie, by his father at the age of nine, during an outing in the mountains of Iran. His mother taught him how to ride a horse when he was a child, sparking a lifelong interest in the companionship between man and horse. Combining this love of travel, adventure and the world of horses, Dallal journeys to remote areas to portray the splendour of rarely seen landscapes—his diverse subjects ranging from the nomadic tribes of the Turkaman Steppes to the Household Cavalry in Knightsbridge. He has self-published a number of coffee-table books and also contributed to numerous other publications, including Qatar: Sand, Sea and Sky. Dallal’s work has been exhibited worldwide and featured in publications internationally. He has been honoured with commissions to photograph Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other senior world ﬁgures. A fellow of

the Royal Geographical Society and Alpine Club Member, he is also a board member of the Hamdan International Photography Award (hipa) based in Dubai. His non-digital photography has been exhibited in Blenheim Palace; Kensington Palace; Naples Museum of Art, Florida; Royal Geographical Society; Smithsonian Institution; Balmoral Castle, and Windsor Castle. In addition to his photography, Dallal is also the passionate founder of Addressing Climate Change, In Focus, a photography competition for the youth of the world which has been exhibited during cop21 in Paris and cop22 in Marrakech in partnership with National Geographic and the Lucie Foundation. He published The World Came To Paris commemorating the famous 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. 70 | 71

Marjane Satrapi (born 1969 in Rasht, Iran) is an Iranian artist and writer. She grew up in Tehran before moving to Austria when she was 14 years old to escape the war. She returned later to study at the Beaux Arts of Tehran before moving to Paris where she now lives and works. Her highly acclaimed autobiographical graphic novel, Persepolis, was ﬁrst published in 2000 and depicts her childhood up to her early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution. A second book, Persepolis 2.0 was published in 2001, depicting a later part of Satrapi’s story. Originally published in French, her books have been translated into several languages including English. Her original comic boards have been exhibited extensively at venues like the MoMA, the gallery of Artludik and Beaubourg.

In 2007, her graphic memoirs were turned into a FrenchIranian animated film, which was co-winner of the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Marjane’s other films Poulet aux Prunes, and the Voices have also won numerous prizes. Marjane also writes children’s books and participates in musical projects, conferences and film and painting projects. These prints are a unique edition, created specially for Magic in Monaco 2017.

Shadi Rezaei (born 1986, in Tehran, Iran) is a London-based interdisciplinary artist. She received her ba in graphic design from the University of Art in Tehran in 2009 and her ma Fine Arts from ual, Chelsea College of Arts and Design in London in 2017. Her passion for the visual arts comprises an exploration of the relationships between tradition and contemporary art and her own eidetic memory. A wide range of themes, such as power, gender, animalism/humanity, oddity/beauty and identity, are depicted in her work. Rezaei’s journey of examination and exploration is carried out through various creative media and the use of unconventional materials, which enable her to create and question metaphoric expressions

of the untold. Jason Noushin (born 1969, in the uk) grew up in Tehran, Paris and London, and currently resides in Connecticut. Noushin is an inveterate experimenter who decontextualises imagery and meaning with organic and synthetic materials to assemble narratives that strike a universal chord. Shokoufeh Malekkiani (born 1977 in Tehran, Iran) is an award-winning Iranian photographer, lawyer, philanthropist and humanitarian activist who has dedicated her career and life to overcoming hunger, which she strongly believes is the root of numerous societal problems. As such, she uses art and photography to draw attention to themes and issues of common concern that would otherwise go unnoticed. Shokoufeh’s great determination has helped her win many national and international awards and underscore her dedication to the underprivileged. In addition, her work was chosen to be included in the Oscars gift bag for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards in 2011, and was dedicated to the United Nations World Food Programme. Malekkiani has been the recipient of notable awards, such as second place in the Canadian Association for Photographic Art’s 2006 Annual

Malekkiani was included as a representative of Iran in the Fourth Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography at the Berlin Foto Biennale 2016. She has recently also been a Finalist for the Eighth Julia Margaret Cameron Award, also 2016, at The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards in Europe with Honourable Mention at the 11th Annual Black and White Spider Awards in the us. Her works have appeared in magazines around the world, and she was a spotlight artist in ARTisSpectrum magazine in New York 2014. Koorosh Shishegaran (born 1944 in Qazvin, Iran) graduated from the Tehran Fine Art High School, before entering the Faculty of Decorative Arts where he received his ba in interior decoration in 1974. His oeuvre encompasses a wide range of experimentation on different media and with a range of approaches. Works before 1981 could be classiﬁed into different series, including Mass Production Works, 1973 – 74; Appropriation of Works of Great Artists, 1974–76; Postal Art, 1976; Art+Art, 1976–77; and two periods in collaboration with his brothers, Behzad and Esmail, Art for Production, 1977– 78 and Political Social Posters, 1978–81. Since 1983 he has concentrated more on painting and drawing with his familiar feature, Khat-Khaty (lines, doodles and scribbles). Throughout these years, aside from developing his painting style and participating in many group exhibitions, both inside and

outside Iran, he has created other series of works, such as War Drawings, 1990, Photographic Works, 2006, and Self Portraits, 2008. Shishegaran’s last solo exhibition was in London, 2012 and a review on some of his paintings in Tehran, 2015. Maryam Shirinlou (born 1966 in Tehran, Iran) received her ba in art in 1990 from the California State University Northridge. She returned to Iran shortly afterwards to work primarily with calligraphic forms, inspired by Persian mysticism. Her paintings and mixed media collages are often eloquent reflections on human spirituality, an attempt to try and capture the indefinable through the use of imagination and form. Her use of mixed media allows for multitudes of layer, texture and meaning, which emerge through her distinct use of collage and figurative and calligraphic shapes. Morteza Darehbaghi (born 1969 in Tehran, Iran) received his diploma from the Plastic Arts School, Tehran, in 1991 and went on to study at Azad University, where he received a ba in art in 1995. Darebaghi’s works contain geometrical conﬁgurations and a unique use of colour and light to create atmospheric representations of ancient eras. A search for the past serves as the unconscious drive behind his work and reveals a yearning for the past traditions and ancient civilizations that were responsible for the emergence of the motifs and elements in his works, including fretwork, ﬁgures in Persian painting and geometry, and an artistic practice deeply rooted in dreams and visions. Behzad Behnam (born 1945 in Tehran, Iran) was educated in history and political science at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and Tehran University. He developed his passion for art during his studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in Brussels. Having gained status as a professional painter across Europe (in Switzerland, Italy, France, England and Germany), Behzad is recognised for his original style of oriental fauvism. While successfully managing his own art gallery for over decade in Paris, he has also worked as a professor of arts for adults and children. He has held numerous exhibitions of his work internationally in Zurich, Geneva, London and Dubai. In 2003, Behzad founded an art group for young painters, sculptors and

photographers widely known as L’ecole de Murat in Cantal, Auvergne where he now has his permanent residence. In 2003, he ﬁnished a long period of studies of Persian calligraphy and miniature painting which enabled him to develop his signature style of ’Painting Poetry’ as of 2011. He is currently based between Tehran and Paris. Pooya Aryanpour (born 1971 in Tehran, Iran) received his diploma from the Plastic Arts School, Tehran, in 1993, and went on to study at Azad University in Tehran where he graduated with a ba and ma in painting in 1997 and 1999. Aryanpour ﬁrst started painting “as a means of escaping the mundane academic atmosphere of the educational system,” and his work is deﬁned by the use of abstract forms inspired

His more recent work explores the rotation of ﬂuid circular forms, which taper off into sharp edged points, and which the artist describes as “cutting objects”.

Hossein Rezvani (born in 1976 in Hamburg, Germany) grew up in a family of carpet connoisseurs. The idea of the Persian rug as a cultural and artistic emblem interested Rezvani, and after completing his studies in business management, he embarked on a journey to realise his dreams of creating the perfect rug. In 2009, he sketched his ﬁrst Persian rug collection and designed his ﬁrst works, Tabriz and Bakhtiar. Driven by intuition and emotional attachment, the idea behind Rezvani’s designs combine tradition with modern design standards: He has created what he calls “the Persian rug of the 21st century.” His carpets are woven exclusively in Esfahan, at the heart of Persian carpet weaving and the designs of his rugs combine

Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar (born 1984 in Paris, France) was dubbed the multitalented renaissance artist of his generation from Iran by the Hufﬁngton Post in 2014, and a man on a mission to inform the world of the true nature of Iran by Harper’s Bazaar Art in 2015. His work is the carrier of an essential understanding that drives him to speak of his subjects based on their physical and mental individualism, as well as their trace in history. He considers himself a citizen of the world without boundaries, and is driven by his belief that a truth can be communicated to the outside world via his signature artistic forms of expression. In doing so, he seeks to portray a different Iran to the one seen through the lens of

Dzamil Kamangar (born 1948 in Mariwan, Iran) is of Iranian Kurdish descent and has lived and worked in Helsinki since 1994. He received his ma in handicrafts from the Kermanshah University of Fine Arts in 1973. In his art he engages his own experiences as a refugee by using traditional Iranian handicraft techniques. He has collaborated with artist Kalle Hame since 1999, and as an artist duo they explore cultural interaction and the global movements of people and plants, delving into themes such as the spaces between art, design, handicraft and everyday objects and how they communicate the state of the world’s affairs and the people in it. His beadworks—made using a traditional Kurdish technique—marry together the

traditional and the modern. His series of beaded passports and visa documents in particular relate to countries with which the artist has held some connections and explore the production of counterfeit documents as a craft, one that is increasingly becoming a complicated one.

Brooklyn-based artist Nicky Nodjoumi (born 1942 in Kermanshah, Iran), earned a ba from Tehran University of Fine Arts before relocating to the us in the late 1960s. There, he received his ma in Fine Arts from The City College of New York in 1974. Returning to Tehran to join the faculty of his alma mater, Nodjoumi joined his politically galvanised students in their criticism of the Shah’s regime, designing political posters inspired by the revolutionary spirit sweeping the country, only to be exiled once more in the aftermath of the revolution. This political engagement has continued to the present day. His nuanced ﬁgurative paintings engage in political discourse with a light, satirical touch, layering his personal heritage and

lived experiences in Iran and the us into scenes that resonate beyond speciﬁc historical contexts or geographical boundaries. Nodjoumi’s works are conceived of as theatrical stages, where compositions of ﬁgures both serious and ridiculous allude to collective experiences underpinned by socio-political struggles. Nodjoumi’s works are in several prominent institutional collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Museum, London, the DePaul Art Museum in Chicago, and the National Museum of Cuba. In 2014, Nicky had a solo exhibition at the Cleveland Institute of Art titled The Accident. Nodjoumi is represented by Taymour Grahne Gallery in New York.

Alongside his teaching and managerial roles, he is an accomplished painter and multimedia artist whose works have been exhibited both at home in Iran and abroad. The work of Firouz Farman-Farmaian (born 1973 in Tehran, Iran), is informed by history and memory. His lifetime of living in exile in Paris, has profoundly inﬂuenced both his creative practice and character. “It is circumstance that ultimately shapes lives,” says the artist, whose work seeks to actively engage in a dialogue with the past. As such, his compositions possess a vivacious and spontaneous energy, as well as a deeply symbolic quality, which speaks to a multiplicity of currents in politics, art and philosophy. Rooted in Persian lore and focused on themes of nature, architectonics and the interplay between realism and abstraction, Farman-Farmaian’s diverse body of work is united by common motifs of movement and texture.

The raw and visceral emotion of his pieces is tempered by their material properties, strongly rooted in a resolute emphasis on craftsmanship. These in turn are deftly combined to create a unique visual rhythm across a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, ﬁlm and music. Shaghayegh Shojaian (born 1978 in Tehran, Iran) completed her BA in painting at Azad University of Tehran. She has worked as a graphic designer for organisations such as the Agricultural Ministry in Iran, but has devoted her time since then to her work as a painter. Parviz Tanavoli (born 1937 in Tehran, Iran) is a pioneering ﬁgure in contemporary Iranian art and one of the most signiﬁcant Iranian artists of our time — renowned for his sculptures, paintings, scholarship, teaching and his unique collections of art and Iranian cultural artefacts. His iconic Heech sculptures, composed of three Persian characters in the nastaliq style, representing the word ’nothing’ have been become one of the most widely recognised works in Iranian art. He studied sculpture in Milan in the 1950s before teaching sculpting in Minneapolis in the early 1960s. He returned to Tehran shortly afterwards, where he became involved in the formation of the Saqqakhaneh School—an avant-garde

movement in the 1960s that drew from popular culture and symbolism to produce distinctly modern re-appropriations. His work has been auctioned by the world’s leading auction houses internationally and he has, over the last ﬁve decades, exhibited extensively in institutions such as the Tate Modern, the Barbican Centre, the British Museum in London as well as the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

In the early 1960s Parviz Tanavoli created a series of works on canvas, like a writing board, referring to those used in grade school to teach penmanship, and on top in elegant Nastaliq calligraphy wrote a line which he then repeated in dashed lines below. What made this work avant-garde at the time and set it apart was Tanavoliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s conceptual approach to the canvas. In his selection of the written line, Tanavoli cleverly placed the viewer in the same position he has had in society throughout childhood and adulthood: in Iranian society and socio-cultural history people have permanently been in the position of being advised. Based on the series mentioned above and using images from it, Tanavoli has created two collections of hand-coloured screen prints, reminiscent of the schoolbooks of his youth. The collections Manners and Exercise Writing display a

socio-political approach and are based on what he created over 50 years ago, like the writing boards given to children to teach them writing and manners through the repetition of phrases and poems. This work is a suit of ďŹ ve original hand-coloured screen prints on paper. All pieces are signed and numbered by the artist in an edition of 35 and 5 Artist Proofs, Colophon, and CertiďŹ cate of Authenticity are also included in the portfolio.

Her patronage of the Shiraz Arts Festival being one of the most important cultural endevours in the recent history of Iran. returned a wide selection of Iranian artifacts which had found their way into the hands of foreign museums and private collections. Using these, she established several national museums, many of which survive to this day. Museums and cultural centres created under her guidance include the Negarestan Cultural Center, the Reza Abbasi Museum, the Khorramabad Museum with its valuable collection of Lorestān bronzes, the National Carpet Gallery and the Abgineh Museum for ceramics and glass works. Using limited funds allocated by the Government of Iran, she took initiative in the 1970’s, a time of relative depression in the art market, to acquire works of contemporary Art from the West as well as at home in Iran. These works were for the collection of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMoCA) which as a result, today houses some of the most important works of Western and Iranian art. With her guidance, the museum acquired a selection of 150 works of Western art, including works by Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, George Grosz and Roy Lichtenstein. The collection at TMoCA is widely considered to be one of the most signiﬁcant outside of Europe and the United States.

(b) If Christie’s receives commission bids on a particular artwork for identical amounts, and at auction these bids are the highest bids for the Lot, it will be sold to the person whose bid was received first. (c) In the case of order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Christie’s and the Charity are not responsible for any errors or omissions in connection such bids. (d) All lots are offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold.
