SPRING
FASHION FIX BY CHELSEA ARNOLD
MOST MELBURNIAN WOMEN HAVE A WARDROBE FILLED WITH BLACK. IT’S A FACT. But despite this long-held love affair with all things dark and stormy, fashion designers are set to show Melburnians don’t just don black year-round. And to prove it there is something decidedly colourful on the racks of Melbourne’s local and international designer retailers and boutiques right now.
THE SPRING 15 COLLECTIONS HAVE JUST DROPPED IN MELBOURNE TO COINCIDE WITH THE 21ST ANNUAL MELBOURNE SPRING FASHION WEEK. From couture gowns with romantic silhouettes to minimalist readyto-wear pieces each S15 look is available for purchase at retailers and boutiques across the city. City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle joined international model and 2015 MSFW Ambassador Ashley Hart in launching the event which has become a favourite with the city’s fashion elite and those wanting to inject some colour into their wardrobe.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week delivers more than 200 fashion
events in the city and provides fantastic exposure for emerging and established designers, students, models and retail brands. “Last year MSFW contributed more than $4 million to Melbourne’s economy and with on board this year, we’re confident this success will be exceeded in 2015,” Cr Doyle said. Melbourne has a global reputation as an innovative fashion and retail destination and Melbourne Spring Fashion Week amplifies this with a unique program of fashion, shopping, entertainment and superb hospitality experiences. Visit designers like Alice McCall, Manning Cartell, Yeojin Bae, Rachel Gilbert and Limedrop to see just some of the fabulous fashion in-store this spring.

MILLINER HEAD &
SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST HATS OFF TO MELBOURNE MILLINER, MAREA BRIGHT, WHO WAS INDUCTED INTO THE MILLINERY HALL OF FAME. Ever since she was a little girl Bright derived a certain pleasure from watching her mother get fitted for a hat.
“Inaugural member and past president, career milliner of 50 years, fanatical advocate of hat wearing, instigator of the annual Collins Street Precinct hat week and Paris Lane at Flemington Racecourse, one time right hand woman of Frederick Fox (milliner to the Queen) and Queen of the faerie stitch, herself.”
Born into a racing family – “my father was a jockey, my brother was a jockey, my mother was a trainer, I married a jockey, and my great grandfather was the 1864 Melbourne Cup winning jockey” – Bright grew up watching beautiful ladies in beautiful racewear and resplendent in the finest of hats.
“The selection process is always interesting as the nominees all have their own unique set of experiences and attributes. Of course the ultimate selection criteria must identify the individual who reflects or embodies the aims and ideals that the Millinery Association of Australia represents.”
So it was never a surprise she would make a career out of millinery. “I decided I wanted to be a milliner very early on. My love of hats started when I would watch my mother get fitted,” Bright said.
One of Bright’s impressive qualifications hails from her time in 1999 with milliner to the Queen, the late Frederick Fox LVO, invited, Bright, to London to assist him in his new, Bond Street, salon where she attended to his high profile clientele on a day to day basis, along with managing production and staff.
“I love all hats. I love creating them. Each hat is a beautiful work of art.” President of the Millinery Association of Australia, Phillip Rhodes said Bright “certainly fulfils all of these expectations and stood head and shoulders above the pack right from the outset”. Rhodes said Bright was an obvious choice for the award describing her as:
It’s little doubt that Bright’s petite and classy boutique at the historic Centreway, 259 Collins Street will be teaming with racegroers and fashionistas in the lead up to this year’s Victorian Racing Carnival.

GET HOME SAFE WITH 24-HOUR PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Photo: Melbourne’s Public Transport Gallery
GETTING HOME AFTER A LATE NIGHT OUT IS SET TO BECOME EASIER WITH A TRIAL OF 24-HOUR WEEKEND PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM 1 JANUARY. The State Government announced Homesafe, the 24-hour public transport trial, will get people home safe to the suburbs and regional areas. During the trial, metro trains will depart from Flinders Street Station every 60 minutes on all lines except Stony Point and Flemington Racecourse. Trams will also operate every 30 minutes on six key routes – the 19, 67, 75, 86, 96 and 109 – providing services to St Kilda, Coburg, Bundoora, Port Melbourne, Carnegie, Box Hill, Vermont South and Brunswick, as well as within the CBD.

A revamped and improved night bus network will include 20 routes, with a mix of routes operating from the city and others providing suburban connections from train stations and from suburban night-time hubs including Dandenong and Frankston. V/Line coaches will depart from Southern Cross Station at 2am, bound for Bendigo, Ballarat, Traralgon,
and Geelong. The coaches will provide a mix of express and stopping services. To support Homesafe, there will be 171 extra transport security officers – 109 Protective Services Officers and 62 transit police. The roving transit police will patrol all train lines through the night on weekends and use divisional vans to transport alleged offenders or travel quickly to where they are needed. If successful, 24-hour weekend public transport will be continued and expanded where necessary.

ACROSS THE CITY SMOKING BANS WILL BE ENFORCED IN THREE POPULAR CITY MEETING PLACES FROM 1 OCTOBER. Permanent smoking bans will come into place at QV Melbourne and Goldsbourgh Lane, and a daytime smoking ban in City Square.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said a world-class city like Melbourne deserved a 24-hour public transport system.
The City of Melbourne consulted widely with traders, visitors, workers and commuters during May and June with survey results showing almost 85% per cent of people were supportive of or neutral towards the smoking bans.
“It’s good for our economy, for shift workers and for people who want to get home safe after a night out,” Ms Allan said,
Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the Future Melbourne Committee voted to trial a 12-month daytime ban in City Square from 6am to 8pm.
“People who live in the outer suburbs and regional areas shouldn’t have to miss out on Melbourne’s vibrant night life. This trial is about giving them a safe and affordable way to get home.”
“We chose larger, more open public spaces to consider for smoking bans this time that welcome hundreds of people day in day out and are home
to a mix of retail and hospitality businesses, offices and residential dwellings,” Cr Doyle said. “The feedback we received during consultation was very positive, although some City Square businesses felt a late-night ban might have an impact on trade. As a result we will trial a daytime ban for the next year before deciding on whether a 24-hour ban is appropriate.” “For the first time we considered an entire city block for a smoking ban with QV Melbourne. Goldsbrough Lane was another busy city laneway that we felt was a good fit as a smoke-free area and we’re pleased to be able to endorse both these areas as smoke-free now.” The decision comes on the back of three iconic Melbourne laneways – Howey Place, Equitable Place and Block Place – being declared smoke-free earlier this year.
MELBOURNE HAS BEEN NAMED THE WORLD’S MOST LIVEABLE CITY FIVE TIMES OVER. MELBOURNE CAME IN ON TOP OF 140 OF THE WORLD’S MAJOR CITIES, ACCORDING TO THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT’S LIVEABILITY INDEX, WHICH IS THE WORLD’S MOST WIDELY ACCEPTED RANKING OF LIVEABILITY. Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said Melbourne excelled in the five criteria: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. “We should be very proud of our city being named World’s Most Liveable City for the fifth year in a row. It is unprecedented for Melbourne and is particularly pleasing in a year when the Economist Intelligence Unit notes that many cities lost ground,” Cr Doyle said.
NEIGHBOURHOOD
WHY LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE? “We must be doing something right in our cities in this part of the world: half of the top 10 most liveable cities are in Australia and New Zealand,” he said. Melbourne placed first ahead of Vienna, Austria, and the Canadian cities of Vancouver and Toronto. Adelaide was rated equal fifth most liveable city, tied with Calgary, Canada. Sydney and Perth were ranked seventh and eighth respectively. City of Melbourne Chief Executive Officer Ben Rimmer said being named world’s most liveable city was a testament to the economic, cultural and social opportunities Melbourne offers. “Liveability matters to the people of Melbourne, but it’s about much more than quality of life. Through our higher standard of living we are able to attract the kind of talent and workforce that will drive the 21st century economy,” Mr Rimmer said.

THE LORD OF THE DANCE HAS HUNG UP HIS DANCING SHOES. Riverdance creator Michael Flatley spoke exclusively to 3000melbourne after his final performance at Wembley Stadium in London. To mark the end of an era, Flatley is bringing Lord of the Dance – Dangerous Games to Melbourne. The world’s most successful dance show explodes onto the Melbourne stage as part of a 15-country tour following an extensive tour of the UK. Dangerous Games is a classic tale of good versus evil based on old Irish folklore, as well as a passionate love story expressed through dance. “The show has exciting and ground-breaking technology, including holographs, dancing robots, world champion acrobats, and 34 of the greatest Irish Dancers in the world,” Flatley said. A new score, new choreography, stunning costumes and special effect lighting add a breathtaking dimension to the original masterpiece. “The dancers are remarkable,” Flatley said. “They are in such tremendous shape. And they are very excited to be coming to Melbourne.” Flatley brought Irish Dance into the global spotlight more than 21 years ago, and then created the Lord of the Dance in 1996. Since then his artistry and grand scale productions have mesmerized more than 60 million people in 68 countries around the world. “I feel great and I feel satisfied for the wonderful career I have had,” Flatley said. “I have been blessed, there have been so many highs. And I’ve always loved to train the dancers. “I have been touring around the world for the past 20 years. I couldn’t have asked for a better career.”
He admits he still gets a thrill from seeing audiences worldwide embrace his shows. “The audience reaction always thrills me,” he said. “It seems to really have taken the imagination of the people. It’s entertaining for all ages from five to 95. All people of any religion and language.”

The social enterprise initiative by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) was launched to tackle the growing food insecurity felt by more than 10,000 people in Victoria who are on bridging visas. It is the world’s first retail model that enables the general public to invest
in quality fresh food for their family, while re-investing profits into affordable nutritious food for asylum seekers. When shoppers invest in quality, fresh and locally sourced produce (with low carbon miles) for their family, they are also supporting local producers, reducing the environmental impact of delivering fresh food to homes, and also supporting the ASRC to re-invest profits into the provision of fresh food for asylum seekers at a price that they can afford. This unique social enterprise model improves the healthy eating habits of the community, promotes advocacy for asylum seekers and supports the environment.

SPRING INTO SOMETHING NEW
MISS MEANINGFUL COLUMN
SPRING IS NATURE’S WAY OF SAYING, ‘LET’S PARTY!’
JANINE PHILLIPS AKA MISS MEANINGFUL
THE LATE ROBIN WILLIAMS ONCE SAID:
I agree! I actually love the transition from winter to spring. There’s a feeling of renewal and change in the air and a sense that anything can happen. Flowers start to bloom and the sun warms us up, the bees come out to play and the leaves on trees shine bright. Yes, it’s spring and it’s time to get outside. It reminds me of a favourite quote from Dr Seuss: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” In spring we stop hibernating and get out more. There’s much to do around town but may I suggest trying something a little different? Want to learn Origami gift wrapping? There’s a class for that. Want to raise chickens? There’s a class for that too.
Want to learn to dance? Plenty of options to choose from. Always wanted to make your own sauerkraut? Well here’s your chance! For a fun and less formal way to learn, check out Laneway Learning. They offer an eclectic mix of evening classes at bargain prices. Facilitated by passionate people from the local community, courses are held in small groups on weekday evenings. Held in cafes and bars around Melbourne – in the CBD, Northcote, St Kilda and Brunswick - these evenings are also a great way to meet people with a common interest. Whether you’re into bee-keeping, life skills, science or juggling … there’s something for everyone. As a chocolate lover I was excited to attend the chocolate tasting class delivered by connoisseurs Chris and Tina from Xocolatl.
Both extremely passionate and knowledgeable, their entertaining banter was captivating and particularly charming considering they are father and daughter. They took us on a chocolate making journey sharing delicious samples along the way. Imagine our delight when we were given a goodie bag full of Xocolatl chocolate. It was a really great way to learn.
is passionate about philanthropy and business with a love of combining the two living by the motto ‘one devoted person can initiate change’.
MAKE SURE YOU VISIT HER BLOG AT missmeaningful.com.au
Interested? Visit their website melbourne.lanewaylearning.com to book. There are heaps of courses available but you don’t want to miss out as they do fill up quickly. Oh, and if you are passionate about your talent, why not run your own class? All they seek is your passion, knowledge about your chosen topic, and the desire to share it with other people. Enjoy.

THE FINAL WORD
JONATHAN GREEN TAKES A CLOSE LOOK AT THE NOT-SO-SERIOUS ISSUES OF THE WORKPLACE.
WHAT IS IT WITH THE KITCHEN? I feel like I can negotiate my way through most office environments. I mean … throw me a surprise agenda item at a meeting and I can talk my way through it. I can hold my own in the company of executives and still fit in at the ground level. I’m even reasonable at the uneasy corridor greeting where you kind of know the person walking towards you but not well enough to do anything until you’re right next to each other. magmedia.com.au

However, there is one place where I lose all skills – the office kitchen. It’s this perfect recipe of awkwardness, questionable personal space and inane
signs from passive aggressive co-workers. I need help. I need suggestions. I need strategies. Let’s break it down a little. Let’s start with those signs – those instructional, sometimes aggressive, sometimes a bit sad signs; generally with spelling mistakes, normally with a lack of basic punctuation and an over-abundance of exclamation marks!!!
I mean, in principle, I tend to agree with the sentiment of the average office kitchen sign. I don’t understand why people can’t just wash their own dishes and put them away; I don’t know why people can’t clear their old lunch out of the fridge; and it’s only reasonable that if you use the last of the tea bags then you should go to the cupboard and fill up the container. But why do you need to use WordArt? It makes no bigger impact to spell out ‘kitchen sink’ in an arching rainbow colour scheme with shadow backdrop. In fact, I actually had to check that WordArt still existed when I was writing this column, and can only assume that it’s been retained purely for the office worker sign.
And while I’m at it, someone in every office has a good grasp of spelling and grammar. Find them – and get them to proof-read your sign before posting. I worked in a publishing business – filled with writers – where a sign appeared on the wall stating, “Don’t leave you’re dirty dishs in the sink”. It stayed there for two years. Now, the obvious answer to this is simply to not let it bother me. “You can’t control your environment, only your reaction to it.” And that is entirely true, but there’s always that frustrating amount of time when you’re waiting for the kettle to boil or your lunch to heat, and you instinctively look around, reading the same signs you’ve read 20 times already that month. It’s irritation reinforcement. It’s the same annoying time frame that seems to ruin my conversation skills. I can hold an hour-long conversation in a plane next to a co-worker on a business trip, but ask me to find something to say in three minutes while their lunch is warming in the microwave… and I’ve got nothing. “So … soup looks good. You make that yourself?” “No, it’s one of those supermarket ones from near the deli.” “Oh … they can be nice.” “I suppose so.”
*uncomfortable silence and looking away from each other for the next two minutes and 45 seconds* And then on the rare occasion I do think of something good to say, I have the opposite problem where I’m half way through explaining something before I realise that the lunch is well and truly heated through, and the other person really just wants to get back to their desk to eat. Of course, all of this is amplified by the illogical layout of the average office kitchen. How is it that the water cooler got lodged in the corner next to the sink so I can’t fill a bottle when anyone else is cleaning their mug? I normally undertake at least four different dance steps with some co-worker in the course of making a cup of tea, heating my lunch and washing a plate. So help me. Give me some tactics. Perhaps you’ve got some conversation ideas that generally run about two to three minutes. Maybe you’ve got a smart approach to helping out with those signs – or even found a way to get the masses to play their part so you don’t even need signs. Help me love the kitchen again. Send me your wisdom.
