LA VERITÀ From the creative minds behind Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo and Cirque Éloize’s Rain comes La Verità – a dreamlike, acrobatic poem and surrealist circus extravaganza. La Verità is a visually breathtaking circus work inspired by a backdrop created by surrealist painter Salvador Dali. Ideas and images collide in a decadent Vaudeville channelling of Dali’s vision, as 13 acrobats play instruments, sing, juggle, contort, clown and can-can amongst unfurling flowers, distorting shadows, ladders suspended in empty space, impossible balances, dismantled corpses, blindfolds, feathers and sequins.

BY CHELSEA ARNOLD THERE IS ONE MUSICAL THAT HAS LONG DIVIDED AUDIENCES. ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S CATS HAS PLAYED ACROSS THE WORLD TO MORE THAN 73 MILLION PEOPLE SINCE IT DEBUTED IN LONDON IN 1981, HAS WON SEVEN TONY AWARDS, GRAMMYS AND HAS BEEN TRANSLATED INTO MORE THAN 20 LANGUAGES. BUT THEATRE-GOERS EITHER LOVE IT OR HATE IT. But a contemporary version of the stage show, based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, is promising to breathe new life into the classic. magmedia.com.au

6

And for local performers Sarah Kate Landy and Daniel Assetta, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. Both have long-wanted to land a role in the classic story set in a larger-than-life

junkyard playground. Landy plays sexy and flirtatious Bombalurina and Assetta stars as the rapping street cat the Rum Tum Tugger. “It’s a show that I have always wanted to do,” Landy said. “It’s the musical theatre show to be in. As a young performer in this industry you have to have all the skills to be up there. You have to be a triple-threat. CATS is seen as a dancing, singing and acting show. It’s a big challenge for a lot of people to be out there doing all three day after day. “I am so excited to play my character, she is an experienced, sexy cat. Each cat brings different music to the show,” she said. While Assetta is “excited about bringing something fresh to the role of Rum Tum Tugger”. The original rock n roll cat has

been reinvented as a rapping street cat which brings with it fresh new music and serious breakdancing moves. “I get to dance a new number which is something that has never been seen before,” Assett said. The two will star alongside Delta Goodrem, as Grizabella, who will sing the classic ballad, Memory. The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. The stars say each member of the audience will take away something different from the show.

“That’s what’s so unique about CATS, it’s got a sense of magic and it’s deep and you can sit back and see where the story leads you. I hope they get moved by this and have an experience. The music really transports you,” Landy said. “CATS is a show for everyone. It’s entertaining, moving, emotional and fun. There’s a sense of family fun for the kids and there’s a deeper message and meaning for the adults.” WHERE: Regent Theatre WHEN: From Friday 18 December TIMES: Wednesday 1pm & 8pm, Thursday 8pm, Friday 8pm, Saturday 2pm & 8pm, Sunday 1pm & 6pm.

NEW PARK KICKING GOALS IN DOCKLANDS

ARRAY OF ACCOLADES FOR MIVAC PENTHOUSE

AN EXCITING NEW OPEN SPACE HAS OPENED IN DOCKLANDS, PROVIDING RESIDENTS, VISITORS AND WORKERS A MUCH-NEEDED OUTDOOR PLACE FOR RECREATION AND RESPITE.

The $15 million first stage of Ron Barassi Senior Park includes a sports field, pavilion, playground, barbecues and a walking circuit.

The park was identified as a community priority during consultation as part of the Docklands Community and Place Plan in July 2012.

The park, named after Melbourne Football Club legend Ron Barassi Senior, offers more open space in Docklands to play sport, have a barbeque, for children to play or to walk the dog.

The park has been delivered by Places Victoria and will be owned, operated and maintained by the City of Melbourne.

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the park makes Docklands a more liveable and healthy place to call home. “Docklands is a growing, thriving community and we all know that community infrastructure is the heart of all great neighbourhoods,” Cr Doyle said. magmedia.com.au

8

“The City of Melbourne designed the park with the community in mind: it will help meet the demand for turf sports fields in the inner city and provide great spaces and facilities for everyone to enjoy.”

The park’s name was chosen after a public vote in September 2014 and recognises Ronald James Barassi Senior, who played as a rover for the Melbourne Football Club between 1936 and 1940. Within weeks of being a member of the 1940 premiership team, Ron Barassi Senior was posted overseas, as a volunteer, to serve in the Australian Army’s Second World War campaign in North Africa. He was killed in action at Tobruk in 1941.

MIRVAC’S DUAL-LEVEL ARRAY PENTHOUSE HAS BEEN NAMED APARTMENT OF THE YEAR AT THE 2015 HIA-CSR VICTORIAN HOUSING AWARDS. Acknowledging excellence in construction, design and innovation, the awards recognise those who plan and construct quality developments that contribute to the fabric of Melbourne’s city. The East Penthouse was applauded for its quality of workmanship and design innovation, further enhanced by international illustrator Megan Hess, who styled the interior, sourcing some of the most opulent imported furnishings, including bespoke Versace, Fendi and Roberto Cavalli pieces and furniture created by Hess herself. Array, completed earlier this year and now close to 100 per cent sold, was also recognised for its design

and integration into the broader area, and was runner-up in the Apartment Complex of the Year category. Mirvac’s Head of Residential John Carfi said the awards recognised the intelligence of Array’s design and the strong attention to detail. “These awards are fantastic recognition of Array’s iconic design and the new level of quality, finish and customisation it offers,” he said. “Inspired by the reflections of the Yarra River, Array was designed to offer a heightened level of luxury in the waterside area in response to purchaser demand for special apartments.” It is crowned by dual east and west penthouses each spanning more than 400 square metres which feature four bedrooms, four bathrooms, butler’s pantry, private lift and impressive double height living and entertaining area leading onto a terrace overlooking the Yarra and city.

BY CHELSEA ARNOLD “I’m pretty rapt to be in the show,” he said. “I grew up loving musicals. I love the live aspect that you get with an audience. I love the performing and I really love people coming out to see the theatre. There is something really special about musical theatre. Stories can be told through song. “I was very nervous at my audition. Every audition is scary. You hope you put down a good audition. If you can’t audition well no one will ever get to see you perform no matter how good you are. “I also love becoming a family with the cast. It’s an amazing cast. We perform eight times a week, so it is a tough schedule. It’s a very welcoming and supportive community.”

Set in modern day New York City, Ghost The Musical is a timeless fantasy about the power of love. Walking back to their apartment one night after a romantic dinner, Sam and Molly, played by Jemma Rix, star of Wicked, are mugged, leaving Sam dead on a dark street. Sam is trapped as a ghost between this world and

the next and unable to leave Molly, whom he learns is in grave danger. With the help of Oda Mae, a phony storefront psychic, Sam tries to communicate with Molly in the hope of saving and protecting her. “It’s going to be a great show. There’s a brand new score with music and lyrics by Dave Stewart of the Eurhythmics. It’s got quite a pop rock feel and I’m

very lucky I get to sing the massive ballad, Unchained Melody, performed in the movie by The Righteous Brothers. “The music takes you further with the emotions,” Mills said. The stage show version of the movie classic has played to more than one million theatres goers on the West End and Broadway. Employing special effects never before

seen in an on-stage musical, Mills said “the ticket price is worth it alone to see the special effects”. Ghost The Musical will delight audiences with special effects never seen in an on-stage musical. The incredible illusions include Sam, as a ghost, walking through a solid door, inanimate objects taking on a life of their own while spirits ascend to the heavens and subway passengers thrown in the air and people disappearing and reappearing right before your eyes. “It’s a feast for the senses. It’s a tragic love story, a murder mystery and has some comedy. There’s the pottery scene that everyone loves and the dialogue is hilarious. The dialogue with the character of Oda Mae Brown, played by British actress Wendy Mae Brown, is really quite hilarious. “If you are a fan of the movie you will definitely love the musical.” Ghost The Musical is playing in Melbourne for a strictly limited six-week season.

“We’re excited to be a part of the rejuvenation happening at the Entertainment Leisure Precinct at Harbour Town Docklands – it’s the perfect fit for Hoyts. And we can’t wait to keep pushing ourselves to continue to create cinemas of the future.” AsheMorgan principal Alton Abrahams said they were pleased to partner with Hoyts as it has “a solid vision and continues to lead the guest experience for movie goers”. “We’re confident that the addition of the Hoyts cinema complex will entice movie goers from across Melbourne to visit Waterfront City and enjoy the

Timothy Martin, formerly head chef at The European and The Age Good Food Guide’s Young Chef of the Year in 2015, has worked in four hatted restaurants and brings 15 years’ culinary experience to Woody.P. Martin’s menu has a strong focus on local Victorian produce that references his Gippsland childhood. There’s lots to

be excited about like bone marrow crostini, swordfish crudo, rabbit ravioli, Moreton Bay bug tagliatelle, suckling roast lamb, and charcoal fire grilled steaks. Or the impressive selection of cold cuts and cheeses. It also boasts contemporary interpretations of classic Italian dishes like polenta frittes, Sicilian arancini, or beef carpaccio with rocket, capers and grissini. Martin has put a fresh spin on the traditional schnitzel with the veal Milanese with shredded cabbage and parmesan, and the milk-braised pork with fennel and peas is proving

to be a popular change from the pulled pork dominating city menus. A clear highlight of 3000melbourne’s visit was the Chocolate Bar - chocolate gianduja, blood orange, mandarin and caramelized hazelnut paired with a Red Cabaret - solerno, vodka, blood orange sorbet, and prosecco. A match made in heaven. There’s an impressive drinks list which includes cocktails designed to reflect and complement Martin’s new menu.

Construction has begun on the basement cocktail and wine bar which will connect to an outdoor basement courtyard when it opens in January. Woody.P’s wood-fired pizzas will be back on the menu then too. Woody.P presents a refined casual dining offering, with the finest of local produce, minus the long queue. OFFICE RANT

JONATHAN GREEN TAKES A CLOSE LOOK AT THE NOT-SO-SERIOUS ISSUES OF THE WORKPLACE.

IT’S PARTY TIME

WE’RE FAST APPROACHING THE END OF YEAR. IT’S THAT TIME IN THE OFFICE WHEN YOU’RE EITHER DESPERATELY TRYING TO COMPLETE THAT BIG PROJECT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, OR JUST COUNTING DOWN DAYS TO JANUARY HOLIDAYS.

Even that guy who’s been (not so) secretly looking for a new job for months has finally stopped looking at the classifieds and is settling down for the end of year. Only one thing stands in the way of you and some quality festive spirit – the Work Christmas Party – and I’m searching for a good one.

I have been fascinated with the Work Christmas Party for as long as I can remember. For the organiser, it is generally a ‘no win’ exercise: someone is always unhappy and more than one person thinks they could have done a ‘better job’. However, if it magically works out, you have that job for life. For the attendees, it is often disappointing, strangely expensive, or just a little weird.

My workplace has hit a roadblock. We don’t know what to do for our party – and the email chain of varied suggestions and comments says we are a long way from a simple resolution. Is there a magic formula or some sort of strategic approach? Perhaps we should start with a review of the variable factors.

The cost … The organiser will often bring up the issue of money – or lack thereof – as the biggest problem when trying to come up with a good Work Christmas Party option. However, I’m not convinced. A few years ago a friend announced that her work was taking everyone out

for dinner … on Hamilton Island. The whole company would be flown up for the night with an incredible meal planned over the beautiful waters of the Whitsundays. Sounds amazing, right? Well, it turned out that reality was not quite so idyllic. Firstly, a three-hour flight each way (plus car trips to the airport and waiting times) was a lot of travel for one night – so everyone took the option of extending their stay at least one night; at personal cost obviously. The end result was one very nice dinner … along with a couple of days of work colleagues checking you out in your swimwear and some $500 spent on extra accommodation, meals, drinks and flight transfer fees. Not horrible – but not quite as amazing as first thought. In simple terms: a big budget might be really nice, but it doesn’t necessarily equate to a good event, so we can’t let that hold us back.

What to do … Lunch or dinner at a restaurant is the safe option, but it’s also pretty boring. Generally, most people end up sitting next to those they normally talk to every day – so there’s little to be gained there. An activity is a great way to bring people together with something to talk about, but what do you do?

What sort of staff balance have you got in your office? Is everyone about the same age with the same personalities? If so – you’ve got it made as you will have no trouble finding something that everyone wants to do. However if your office is like mine, with a mix of ages and the stark personality differences between the accounts team and the graphic designers, then it’s more likely to be a struggle. I mean, the words “booze cruise” evokes excitement for some, and fear amongst others, and a bad activity is the sure-fire way to kill the party. In simple terms: the restaurant is safe but a little boring – while an activity can be great, but comes with some risk.

Help required … So here I am – in an office with minimal budget and a wide range of ages and personalities. We need suggestions – and I should add that lawn bowls has been done (it was great – but we can’t do it again). What should we do? Is there an activity that’s worked in the past for you? Or a suggestion about how to make the restaurant lunch more interesting? Send your advice – we definitely need it. Got an office gripe of your own? Email it to jg_green@hotmail.com
