FROM THE STAGE TO THE AIRWAVES HOW COMEDIAN DAVE THORNTON JUGGLES EARLY MORNING RADIO STARTS WITH THE LATE NIGHT COMEDY CIRCUIT. When you agree to do an interview first thing in the morning, there is always a risk that the person you’re meeting is barely into their day and everything feels a little flat. As I walked to the café to meet Dave Thornton, it dawned on me that he had probably already been up some five or six hours and the greater risk was that he’d be exhausted from three hours of live breakfast radio on top of very little sleep. I ordered a strong long black. Much to my concern, Thornton ordered a camomile tea. Much to my delight, he was alert, chatty and – dare I say it – just straight out likeable ... without caffeine … first points to Thornton (thankfully he told me later he’d already had a few coffees while on air). Thornton made his name as a stand-up comedian, and after performing to sold-out audiences at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April, it is something that clearly still resonates.

If you’ve never seen him perform stand-up, you may still know his voice from Fox FM’s breakfast radio show with Fifi Box. Or you may recognise his face from the countless billboards Fox FM dotted around Melbourne. Or you may remember his many television appearances on The Project. Or perhaps in a few episodes of the ABC’s Upper Middle Bogan. As you
can tell, he’s building quite the resume – plus complicating the notion of a single job title. “Only recently I was asked what I did for a job and I said I was a stand-up comedian,” he explained. “A friend who was with me pointed out that I have a full time job in radio – which is clearly true and I love doing it – but I guess it’s just that I have been doing comedy for so long that my instinct is to say that I’m a comedian.” The balance of breakfast radio and stand-up comedy is a difficult one – in terms of ‘office hours’ alone they would appear to be mortal enemies. “My life has two big bookends late at night and early in the morning, and in between is a delicate balance of food, looking for new material, catching up with friends and constantly seeking opportunities for naps. I was joking the other day that I need a phone app – along the lines of a dating app – where I can log in and it will tell me opportunities for a nap within a 5km radius. I’ve already got the name for it – it would be called ‘doona’.” The move into radio has been very smooth, with Thornton’s style of autobiographical humour lending itself well to the airwaves. “I suppose the greatest difference is really just having someone else out there performing with you. Stand-up is a one-sided conversation – you’re really only hoping that the audience will laugh – while radio has co-hosts and guests so you can engage in a conversation. “Clearly there are differences in spontaneity and some subject matter, but ultimately it’s really just a more sleep-deprived headspace – and a more caffeine-fuelled headspace. Other than that it’s just an extension of the person I am,” he laughed. The opportunities for comedians is arguably as good as it’s ever been, but it still takes a massive leap of faith to test the waters, and a huge amount of work to make a dollar from

it. It shouldn’t be underestimated how much work comedians like Thornton have put in to hone their craft and build a name, and that is where the development of major festivals has been so important to performers. “I see it a bit like the old tennis circuits where players had lots of smaller tournaments, catching buses and trains between cities getting small amounts of money as they went. Then the circuit became more professional and bigger tournaments appeared, until these Grand Slam events started up where they could make better money and get a real name for themselves. And a similar thing has happened in comedy from the pubs and clubs, through these great festivals. “To me, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is the Australian Open for comedians. Edinburgh is like Wimbledon, Montreal is the US Open and … well … I’m sure there’s a great comedy festival in France but unfortunately I don’t speak French…” With the radio gig in full swing, and the love for stand-up as strong as ever, any opportunities in television have been put on hold. “I’ve really enjoy the television work. Most of my work is entirely up to me and how I want to present the words I choose – whereas walking onto a set where Tony Martin is directing a script that he wrote is a great thrill. It’s more of a relationship between the creative minds. “I’m certainly keen to do more, but for the moment I’d rather be able to spend time with my girlfriend so she’s able to recognise my face.”

STATE’S LARGEST POLICE STATION OPENS AT DOCKLANDS
DOCKLANDS IS NOW HOME TO THE LARGEST POLICE STATION IN THE STATE. Melbourne West police station has a new home, with its members becoming the first occupants of the new 12-storey police complex at 313 Spencer Street. The station opened its doors in May after moving from the Victoria Police Centre at 637 Flinders Street, where it had been based since 1995.

The station’s response zone covers the Docklands precinct including New Quay, Victoria Harbour and Waterfront City, and the western end of Melbourne’s central business district from Elizabeth Street, incorporating the court precinct and Queen Victoria Market.
Station Commander Senior Sergeant Mick Wilmott said the ground floor 24-hour station provided a more central location for Docklands residents and visitors to the city seeking assistance or advice from local police.
Crime Investigation Unit based at the station and teams such as Crime Scene Services, the Divisional Intelligence Unit, the Divisional Response Unit, the Sexual Offences and Child Investigation Team and the Bicycle Patrol Unit,” she said.
“Not only does the location of the new station make it easy to find for the community but it makes it a much more central location for our police covering the Melbourne West area,” he said.
“It’s a modern, state-of-the art facility which will greatly benefit our officers and the work they do.”
Superintendent North West Metro Cindy Millen said the station would house uniform members and other units for the division. “As well as the division’s headquarters, we will also have the state’s biggest

MARKET MASTERPLAN UNVEILED RENEWAL OF THE QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET (QVM) COULD MEAN 9000 NEW JOBS AT THE MARKET, WITH 12,000 JOBS IN THE SURROUNDING PRECINCT AND THOUSANDS IN CONSTRUCTION. Melbourne City Council recently released its draft master plan for the QVM renewal project which is at the heart of its 2015-15 budget. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the $250 million QVM renewal project was the council’s largest investment in history. “After 18 months of speaking with traders and the community about what the renewal might look like, we now have an ambitious master plan which will bring the market into the 21st century while preserving its unique character and heritage,” Cr Doyle said.
“It will retain what we all love about the market, such as the fresh meat and produce and speciality shops, while facilitating a contemporary retail offer, new public spaces and the realignment of Franklin Street to create an important East-West connection.” The draft master plan includes options for acknowledging the market’s history, enhancing facilities for traders and market visitors, providing open spaces and places for events and dining, improved parking options and better access for pedestrians, cyclists and commuters.

Smokers must now butt out before visiting three more of Melbourne’s busiest laneways. Howey Place, Equitable Place and Block Place, all off Little Collins Street, join The Causeway as permanent smoke-free areas. Councillor Richard Foster said the ban by Melbourne City Council on smoking in these laneways, which have high pedestrian traffic and a mix of hospital and retail businesses, was made following significant community consultation. “From the consultation we undertook during the Causeway pilot we knew that Melburnians were largely in favour of smoke-free areas. Our further consultation with businesses, residents, patrons and passers-by around these three laneways has proved that again,” Cr Foster said.
“This underscores council’s strong commitment to the largest project we have ever undertaken and our ability to deliver it,” Cr Doyle said. The council has already spent and is preparing to allocate more than $130 million of the up to $250 million projected investment required to fund the QVM Renewal Project. “This represents a significant down payment on the renewal and should give QVM traders, customers and the broader community confidence that the council is committed to this major project,” Cr Doyle said.
“Our iconic laneways are known for their narrow, intimate atmosphere and to have people smoking in these laneways can make it uncomfortable and unhealthy for surrounding patrons.” The council is also considering City Square and the QV precinct as the next smoke-free areas. “City Square is a popular and iconic part of Melbourne which has seen a number of transformations over the years, from being our first civic open space to today playing host to a number of festivals and events. It’s a common meeting spot for Melburnians, and a place where people often sit to eat their lunch or have a cigarette,” Cr Foster said. “We recognise it’s a bold move to consider this area for a smoking ban and so encourage anyone who visits or is associated with the square to talk to

Past winners of the Melburnian of the Year Award, which honours the achievements and significant contributions of an inspirational individual, include music industry supremo Michael Gudinski; football icon Ron Barassi and pioneering scientist Professor Sharon Lewin. The 2015 Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF) is set to bring the world’s modern masters of jazz to Australia, with a program of big-name international artists alongside Australia’s best.
The highlights of this year’s program, which has been 18 months in the making, include performances by charismatic jazz vocalist Kirt Elling who joins forces with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
The 10-day festival is the largest of its kind in Australia and includes headline shows at Melbourne’s iconic venues, intimate club gigs, film screenings, events for families and children and a range of free events including lunchtime concerts.
The festival also sees the world premier of Nyilipidgi by Paul Grabowsky, a new work blending the musical heritage of Australia’s first people with cutting edge compositions and improvisations by some of the leading figures in the Australian contemporary music scene.
This year’s line-up brings together more than 300 artists from Australia, USA, UK, Italy, Israel, Spain, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Greece and New Zealand to perform in more than 100 events. A TOAST TO OFFICE DRINKS A number of years ago I decided to make a career change. I went back to university and balanced full-time study with a full-time job and the usual suite of adult commitments.

When I finished, and finally cracked a job in a small publishing business it was like I was starting all over again. It may have only been a few years, but office life felt pretty foreign and I was taking some time adjusting to the day-to-day procedures and internal politics. Then I heard the magic words: “Friday drinks”. Oh yeah – I can actually do this.
This is comfortable territory. It’s a chance to engage with co-workers and chat about things I actually know about … namely … anything other than this new job.
It was explained to me that given the lack of licensed venues in the area (we were in outer suburbia) someone would go to a retail liquor outlet and we would have drinks in the boardroom. Sounds good to me. I was told that someone would come round to see what we wanted, and to have some cash ready. So … it’s not paid for by the business? Even though it’s in-house? You know – fair enough, not a big deal. It still sounds good. The anointed co-worker then came around and asked what I would like to drink. As in – the exact drink – the exact brand – and the exact quantity – and then asked for exact money. What the … you mean we don’t just throw in a few dollars each and get a small selection of soft drink, beer and wine?
No. The system for Friday drinks at this workplace was that you selected a specific drink or two – someone would then consult their spreadsheet to tell you exactly how much it would be – and then you would hand over your money. Exact money, please. Heaven help you if your drink selection wasn’t on the spreadsheet. When that particular co-worker left the business, I was asked if I could pick up the role. Like a good dictator, I told everyone that the system would change. People would put in $10 and I would buy a selection of beverages. This was met with trepidation. I eventually won them over by suggesting that whatever money was left over would go towards chips. This seemed to work quite well, with more people than ever deciding to join in for a social chat. I should add that these were very casual drinks. It wasn’t about drinking alcohol specifically, it was about workmates getting together and remembering that we were all just normal people who had lives outside the walls. That was… until the non-drinkers starting eating the chips – and we were back squabbling about things “not being fair”.
It never really got resolved. So what is the best practice for office drinks? I know that workplaces need to be responsible about alcohol consumption and not every office has a pub nearby, so I understand that many businesses find it all a bit difficult. However, as said before, to me it’s more about just stepping outside the desks and engaging with co-workers, so I think it’s a bit sad when there is nothing. Which is to say … I’m currently at a place that does nothing, so I need your ideas and suggestions to implement something that will actually work. So please tell me, what’s worked for you? Is it a social club or some other system? Or does it really just come back to the attitude of individual staff? Send me your ideas and I’ll put them to the test. And then like any good office we can have a meeting after a specified period of time and formally review the findings through a PowerPoint presentation with SWOT analysis and pie charts.
