Celebrity arrivals are nothing new for an international city like Melbourne, but recently one of the biggest to make Melbourne home has literally made a splash and has the whole town talking. With his rugged looks, synonymous with the all Australian male, he’s handsome with a salty demeanour and has an alluring yet dangerous smile. He’s big, in fact he is massive, weighing in at a full-bodied 750kgs post lunch, but he’s cool and calm, patiently waiting for the opportune moment to deliver the element of surprise ....Who is this male of mystery and intrigue? Let’s just say, you’ll have to delve deeper into our October issue to discover who this latest catch is residing on the banks of the Yarra. Will you get rolled over by the most intriguing male in Melbourne this October? They say none do it better than the Italian’s and the 2013 Lavazza Italian Film Festival certainly intends to keep the intrigue alive with an array of fabulous cinematic viewing this month. When the opportunity arose to interview Baby Animals front-woman Suze DeMarchi
on the release of their latest album and tour after a 20 year hiatus from rocking the top of the Australian music charts, I cracked out the CD collection and relived the love all over again. As rocking good as ever, Suze’s voice and the band are at the top of their game. October is Melbourne Festival time with a line-up of local and international events to enthral lovers across all genres of the Arts, be sure to check out the full program and celebrate the diversity of cultural offerings here in Melbourne. Our Events Section has received quite a bit of positive feedback after the recent revamp; it’s great to hear it is a popular section that readers enjoy, I certainly hope we have kept up the standard again this month. Enjoy our October issue!

Should we be told to ‘Butt Out’ in Causeway Lane? The City of Melbourne will take the landmark step of trialling a smoke free area outdoors in the Causeway laneway, which runs between Bourke Street Mall and Little Collins Street. The six month trial, from 1 October 2013 to 31 March 2014, had the unanimous support of Councillors at the Future Melbourne Committee (FMC) last month and is now in effect.
magmedia.com.au

FMC People City portfolio chair Councillor Richard Foster said the Council wanted to take the important first step of seeing if a smoking ban would affect the Causeway businesses, particularly the food outlets with on-street dining. “The City of Melbourne was approached by the Australian Medical Association to consider a trial smoking ban in
an alfresco dining area, and we feel it is important to work towards protecting the health of city visitors and workers,” Cr Foster said. “Most businesses in the Causeway are supportive of the trial, and we’re looking forward to working with the owners and managers throughout the trial to gauge its success.” Quit Victoria says research has found second-hand smoke or passive smoking could potentially cause heart disease and lung cancer. Recent Cancer
Council Victoria data revealed regular smoking rates in Victoria have dropped to a record low of 13.3 per cent. Clearly we all know that smoking does and will affect our health, but while cigarettes are legally sold and permitted to be consumed publicly do you find this trial ban an imposition on our freedom of choice to make individual and legal decisions, or is the ban a step in the right direction to improve the health of all Victorians, including both smokers and non-smokers.
Do you agree with this trial to ban smoking in a specified area? We would love to hear your thoughts, email your opinion to editor@magmedia.com.au, you may remain anonymous, we will not edit responses and we will not print names without written permission to do so.

Every Blessed Day (Tutti i Santi Giorni) FILM Review by Gordana Andjelic-Davila
‘Every Blessed Day’ (Tutti i Santi Giorni), part of the Lavazza Italian Film Festival 2013, is an intimate albeit left of centre love story, between the highly educated intelligent, generous and soft spoken Guido and the slightly neurotic, ex wild child/singer Antonia. This unusual Yin-Yang couple, finds a harmonious balance in life, experiencing their everyday events in a unique encapsulated state, weaving through the turmoil and chaos of the rest of the world unfazed and perhaps even perceived as slightly crazy by the people around them.
magmedia.com.au

Guido has the opportunity to work in very economically rewarding jobs both in Italy and abroad, but instead, he is the night clerk at the front desk of a luxury hotel. He enjoys reading his academic books during the quiet hours of the night, which he would not be able to do if he held a “regular” job.
Antonia has left behind a tumultuous and erratic singer’s life and the wild lifestyle which came with it, to be with Guido. Now, six years into the relationship, the two have decided to finally build a family together. Soon they find out that, just because they have come to the conclusion that it is time to bring a child into the world, nature is not on the same page with them. Visits to gynecologists, fertility clinics and even Ayurvedic retreats become part of Antonia and Guido’s attempt to conceive, eventually proving to be emotionally straining on Antonia, who has self-imposed the blame onto herself, as a form of punishment for her past’s escapades. The story is lovely, and though it addresses the serious challenges of conception which couples are facing everywhere, it does also insert some very clever dialogue and moments. A scene stands out in particular, where an inebriated guest approaches Guido at the hotel’s front desk, and expresses a need for a prostitute, what ensues is a series of miscommunications

which evoked a hearty belly busting laugh, breaking up the drama a bit. ‘Every Blessed Day’ represents “saving”: Guido saves Antonia, from her unravelled and crazy self, whereas she saves from him from his eternal life of solitude, and eventually they save their relationship which became wounded and confused. So yes, as cheesy as it may sound, love conquers all, and you - the spectator - feel that everything is all right with the world. What more can one ask? Go see ‘Every Blessed Day’ and get a boost of the warm and fuzzys.

Melbourne Festival – Tribute to John Landis Melbourne Festival features a special tribute to John Landis who has defined a generation of popular culture on film and created some of the most entertaining movies of cinematic history. As one of the world’s most well known and inveterate storytellers of our time, with a career spanning over five decades, John Landis is responsible for such cinematic touchstones as The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London and Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. Having literally climbed his way up from the mailroom of 20th Century Fox to become one of the most sought after directors of the 1970s and 80s, Landis has a filmography that reads like a hit-parade of iconic cinema. With Landis himself in attendance to introduce many of the screenings, this is the perfect chance to rediscover (or to appreciate for the first time) the films of a cinema legend on the big screen where they belong.
The Blues Brothers (1980) – Screening introduced by John Landis.
For those destined to shake their tale feather, in the tradition of Melbourne’s legendary Valhalla audience-participation events (acknowledged by John Landis for their part in establishing the film’s cult status), The Blues Brothers screens exclusively at The Astor Theatre on Friday 11 October at 8pm with an introduction by Landis himself. Curated especially for Melbourne Festival by Richard Moore, former director of Melbourne International Film Festival and Brisbane International Film Festival, this special tribute to John Landis features his well-loved classics, his genre gems and his documentary films – Slasher and Mr. Warmth – which screen for the first time in Australia.
In Conversation with John Landis - Join John Landis and programmer Richard Moore for a fascinating discussion about the director’s tumultuous career – from anarchic guerrilla filmmaking, to the height of blockbuster fame, to parting ways with Hollywood to pursue more independent projects. A fascinating and eye-opening experience for anyone with an interest in film, it takes place at the Foxtel Festival Hub on Saturday 12 October at 1pm. For more information go to melbournefestival.com.au for full details of the tribute including special appearances and signings from Landis during the Festival.

BABY ANIMALS ‘This Is Not The End' What inspired writing the new album after 20 years, was ‘This Is Not The End’ in the pipe works for while? By Lisa Quittner Since exploding onto the rock scene in 1991 with the release of their first single, Early Warning, Baby Animals have become one of Australia’s most successful rock outfits. Their self titled album spent six weeks at No.1 in Australia, going eight times platinum and becoming the highestselling debut Australian rock album until the release of Jet’s album 12 years later. This Is Not The End, the band’s first full-length release since 1993, marks a successful return to the charts. Sounding as rocking good as ever, 3000Melbourne spoke to the inimitable Suze DeMarchi prior to their Melbourne gig this October.

Dave (Leslie) and I had been talking about it for a long time but it wasn’t until I moved back to Australia that we really started working on it all the time. The inspiration comes from everywhere really, it’s relationship stuff and relationship stuff and then there’s even more relationship stuff in there as well, I figured if Adele can do it, so can I!
What can Baby Animals fans expect from the new album and live shows? Is it a mix between your classic rock, big ballads and the new album? Yes, we try to mix it up but on this tour we will be performing songs from all 3 albums and perhaps a song or two from our acoustic album as well.
We are actually letting the fans decide, we have a survey on our Facebook page where we are inviting people to choose what songs they want to hear. We love playing the new stuff but we always play the favourites that people love – it’s about giving the fans what they want.
I’ve read a few reviews on the latest album and debut single ‘Email’ and all have been really positive and there almost seems to be a sense of relief from reviewers that Baby Animals are still as good as ever, some reviews actually said your voice sounds stronger than ever. It’s just been so great, at first I just couldn’t believe how positive it’s all been, it’s really nice.
Do you think that part of the Baby Animals continued success is your distinctive style and recognisable sound that great rock bands never lose in comparison to much of today’s same sound music? Oh yer, that same sound makes your head just want to explode! The reason so much of today’s music sounds the same is because there is the same stable of writers writing the songs for these kids. We have had the same two writers for the band from the beginning and when I write a song it’s not with the intention to have a hit, I’m writing for the enjoyment and music. Let’s face it; you don’t generally get into the music industry for the money alone if you want to be respected. Of course there are the exceptions that make great music and big money like the great Bruce Springsteen, but there just isn’t enough of that around anymore.
Dave Leslie and yourself are back as original Baby Animal band members and now joined by Dario Bortolin and Mick Skelton, did you have any apprehension that after 20 years the magic had gone? I’ve kept working with Dave the whole time I was living overseas but we understood that we would have to start again in a way. We’ve always had our fan base but we didn’t want to limit ourselves just to the people that had known our music from before. We just want to play music, do new tours and gigs, do festivals, play in pubs, cafe’s wherever, we just wanted to get back out there and play. You can’t be afraid, you just have to have the balls to get back up there and perform otherwise you are in the wrong industry. I feel so grateful that we have such loyal fans though, I really do.
The ‘Feed The Birds Tour’ I believe was named after your live show tradition of pouring red wine from your mouth into the mouths of fans in the front row, can we expect the tradition to continue? (Laughs) Oh, you mean the communion we give our fans? Well, it might not happen every night...but it will happen!
So does the title of the new album ‘This Is Not The End” refer to the resurgence of Baby Animals as Australian Rock Royalty? Well no actually, the name of the album came from the title of a song which actually didn’t make it onto this album but will probably be on the next one. The title didn’t come from any reference to the band. I liked the idea that ‘This Is Not The End’ could mean anything. The song of the same title is about a relationship, my marriage broke down but we still have children together, so it’s never really the end and I guess it’s not the end of the band either...or the world! An Evening With Kathy Griffin By Lisa Quittner That’s right; you can spend an evening with Kathy Griffin this October, albeit with a few thousand other people at the Palais Theatre on October 17 as Kathy flies in for one performance only in Melbourne of her LIVE stand-up show. Kathy Griffin is a tremendously talented multi-faceted performer renowned for her rapid fire wit and well, let’s be honest, her ballsy approach to making everything appear appropriate in her often outlandish and hilarious, and sometimes controversial way. With a career spanning close to two decades Kathy has done it all and proven her mettel as one of the best in the business. A stand-up comedian, star of her own shows including her reality television hit and twice Emmy award winning ‘Kathy Griffin -My Life on the D-List’. A multi Grammy comedy recording nominee and New York Times #1 bestselling author, Kathy has carved out a niche for herself as fearless and peerless. Her no holds barred brand of stand- up comedy has made her a few enemies in Hollywood and political circles alike...
"I'll be covering EVERYTHING that is all sorts of wrong. Dancing with the Stars. Yes, they've asked me to do it, but c'mon, I’m too busy performing around the world and doing my TV specials; I don't have time to practice the cha-cha next to some random Kardashian. I ran into Paula Abdul at the Emmys. And, she was pleasant enough, but let's be honest, she wasn't having my crap. I'm not even sure she knew she was at the Emmys. I think she thought she was at the 1988 American Music Awards with MC Skat Kat. Oh and I'll be ripping apart America's so called "tea party" and let me tell you, there are no mini cakes with those nutbags." Kathy is also very involved with the gay and lesbian community and has been presented with numerous awards for her work with the GLBTQ community. Agatha Christie’s -
This new All-Australian production of Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced comes by overwhelming demand following the success of the 60th Diamond Anniversary Tour of The Mousetrap. Judi Farr, whose career includes an astonishing body-of-work on stage, TV and in film over 30 years plays Miss Marple alongside theatre and television veterans, Carmen Duncan, Robert Grubb, Debra Lawrance as well as several young rising-star actors. magmedia.com.au

A Murder is Announced was the fourth of twelve novels to feature the character of Miss Marple and the first of Christie’s works featuring
the “sensibly heeled” sleuth on stage or screen. This 1977 adaptation is by Leslie Darbon who also adapted Christie’s Cards on the Table for the stage. Of the beloved Marple, Christie said “There was no unkindness in Miss Marple, she just did not trust people. Though she expected the worst, she often accepted the people kindly in spite of what they were.” A Murder is Announced is set in an English village, you turn over a stone and have no idea what will crawl out. The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Miss (Jane) Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30p.m.’ Is it a childish practical joke? Or a hoax intended to scare somebody? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out, a gun is fired and a body falls. It’s clear that this is no game, but with Miss Marple on hand, one of Christie’s best-loved mysteries is sure to be solved. Presents Mega croc! The Saltwater Crocodile is the largest of all the living crocodile species in the world and can live happily in both saltwater and freshwater environments. Known to grow up to almost 7 metres, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s own Saltwater Crocodile Pinjarra is an amazing sight to behold from three spectacular viewing platforms providing a complete 360 degree jaw dropping encounter. Also known as ‘Salties’, Saltwater Crocodiles were once hunted extensively for their skin, populations are only now beginning to recover. However, they
are still threatened by destruction of their breeding habitats. Paul Hamilton, Curator at Melbourne Aquarium says the Croc Lair exhibit will help the attraction to further educate the public on the ecological significance of the Saltwater Crocodile and the need for conservation. “In keeping with SEA LIFE’s strong ethical and environmental values BREED, RESCUE and PROTECT, caring for this spectacular animal will help us to raise public awareness and safety in natural crocodile habitats,” he said. Pinjarra, whose name is aboriginal for ‘place of soft grass and smooth

By Tom Elliott No sooner had new Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced his Cabinet than criticisms started flying: “Not enough women” exclaimed almost every female newspaper columnist in Australia; “Too few Victorians” remarked just one senior Age writer; and, to which might be added, the new Federal Cabinet contains absolutely no Aborigines, nor any openly gay homosexuals and no people at all of primarily Asian descent. So if Mr Abbott seems unable or unwilling to embrace diversity in the Liberal/ National Party’s senior ranks, is some form of Affirmative Action a good idea?
There are plenty of examples from around the world of Affirmative Action being used to boost the positions of various minorities. In post-Apartheid South Africa, for example, company boards are required to source at least 50% of their voted from black directors. This has created a major problem for many corporations who struggle find sufficient numbers of suitably qualified people from the black community. As a result, some black businesspeople sit on literally dozens of boards, with the unfortunate result that they cannot possibly stay on top of all the issues for which directors are legally responsible. In similar fashion, for a decade now Norwegian companies have been required to reserve 40% of board seats
for women. While this rule has worked in the sense that the number of female directors has expanded dramatically, the proportion of female CEOs has hardly increased at all. This is because while directors are typically parachuted into a company from outside, CEOs generally have to work their way to the top – and advancement through the executive ranks remains a field dominated by men. Turning to the political sphere, and there are plenty of examples of countries with seats or votes reserved for minority groups. In New Zealand, for example, around 10% of the Parliament is reserved for representatives of the Maori Peoples. And in a much more aggressive fashion, Malaysia denies its citizens of Chinese descent anything like the political control enjoyed by the ‘native’ Malays, or Bumiputra. Apartheid, it seems, is only terrible when committed by white people... While the above list is hardly exhaustive, to me it suggests that Affirmative Action is

rarely a good idea. Recently, Ita Buttrose had the gall to call Liberal Deputy Leader Julie Bishop a ‘token’. How many more such accusations would be flung about if a proportion of seats in Federal Cabinet were reserved for women - or any other group? Politics is a tough business at the best of times. In my view, the people most likely to succeed in it are those with sufficient levels of determination, intelligence and, it must be said, luck. Trying to override these qualities with quotas for any group will only arouse resentment towards those so artificially favoured in the political selection process. You Bought a Car! Now…How will you Fund It? By Andrew Hewison - Buying a car is often a significant event in a person’s life. There are many ways to fund a vehicle and before signing a contract, I recommend you speak to your Financial Adviser or Accountant. Here are some of your options:
Novated Lease An individual obtains borrowing via a finance/leasing company who would purchase the vehicle and lease it to an individual, who then enters into
Hire Purchase The vehicle is purchased on the individual’s behalf by the finance company and “hired” back by the individual who agrees to
Personal Loan A personal loan will usually be secured by the vehicle itself or some other form of security. This would mean that
Chattel Mortgage Under a Chattel Mortgage the financier lends funds to purchase a vehicle, and the customer takes ownership of the vehicle
a Novation agreement with their employer who agrees to meet the payments on the lessee’s behalf.
Novated leasing forms part of a person’s “salary package” and therefore is viewed as providing a “fringe benefit” to the employee and fringe benefits tax (FBT) can apply. FBT is treated concessionally for vehicles, so novated leasing may be a tax-effective way for an employee
to purchase a vehicle, depending on a number of factors not limited to the type of vehicle, kilometres travelled annually, FBT method used and employee's salary.
pay a hiring fee plus make progressive capital payments off the value of the vehicle over the period of the agreement, spreading the cost of the vehicle. There is usually a lump sum residual amount payable at the end of the period.
Hire purchase arrangements have termination values (TV) included in them. This means that at a certain point during the life of the agreement, the borrower may have the ability to simply hand the car back to the lender and walk away.
Who will this benefit?
the lender would require a deposit to ensure that their loan is adequately covered by the value of the vehicle.
security. Interest rates applicable are therefore comparatively high. If the owner is unable to repay the loan, the lender can repossess the vehicle and sell it.
Who will this benefit?
and at the end of the loan, a balance, referred to as a “balloon payment”, will be left owing. However, it remains the responsibility of the borrower to repay the “balloon”, often by selling the vehicle.
Who is this good for?
Under this agreement, the finance owns the vehicle and there is a residual value payable under the agreement.
Motor vehicles are depreciating assets and not considered to be preferred
(chattel) at the time of purchase. The lender then takes a "mortgage" over the vehicle as security for the loan, typically for 1 – 5 years. Again, the loan is for a sum less than the value of the vehicle
Who will this benefit? • T hose who do significant kms p/a. • Those on the top marginal rate of tax.
• I f leasing is not a suitable fit for an individual, and they do not have the physical cash to pay for the vehicle, hire purchase is worth consideration.
• T hose who cannot fund the purchase via free cash. • T hose who have no other avenue to obtain funding.
• A Chattel Mortgage is suitable for those companies, partnerships and sole traders who have the ability to claim back the GST associated with the vehicle's purchase price.

Property Council welcomes $3.6m boost to building efficiency
magmedia.com.au

The Property Council has enthusiastically welcomed the State Government’s $3.6 million Energy Efficient Office Buildings program which will help commercial property owners improve office building efficiency. Property Council of Australia (Victorian Division), Deputy Executive Director, Asher Judah said the recent announcement was great news for building owners seeking
to boost productivity, reduce operating costs and help the environment. “We are delighted to see the introduction of a jointly funded Government-Industry program long championed by the Property Council,” said Mr Judah. Once fully operational, the new program will boost the efficiency of Victoria’s ageing commercial building stock by helping reduce running costs.
“Building owners involved in the program will be able to fund energy audits, identify opportunities to improve efficiency and secure funding for upgrades and retrofits. “Each of these measures will help building owners lift tenant appeal, reduce energy costs and boost asset value. Importantly, they will do so in cooperation with a Government program designed to make
their businesses more competitive. Matched grant funding between $20,000 and $150,000 will be made available to owners of midtier commercial office buildings seeking to achieve cost-effective energy savings. Commercial property owners are encouraged to take part in this important efficiency boosting program. Building owners seeking more information should visit www.sustainability.vic.gov.au

Fishermans Bend –
Australia’s largest urban renewal project Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Planning Matthew Guy recently launched the Draft Vision and design guidelines for Australia’s largest urban renewal project, Fishermans Bend. Dr Napthine said the Vision for Fishermans Bend would allow for Melbourne’s continued growth as the world’s most liveable city by providing opportunities for new residents to live in an expanded CBD. magmedia.com.au

“It is incredible to think how the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Area has the capacity to accommodate a population approaching the size of Ballarat or Bendigo on the doorstep of the existing CBD,” Dr Napthine said.
“Lifestyle Working Collins Street sets a new benchmark
for affordable strata office accommodation in Melbourne,” said Ms Johnston. The five-level building, which encompasses 137 strata office suites and retail, was designed on a flexible platform featuring shared private and semi-private meeting spaces, collaboration areas, alternative working environments and state-of-the-art technology. One of the technology features includes a Lifestyle Working App developed to manage room bookings and provide a range of services within the building. Lifestyle Working Collins Street is Australia’s first 5 Star Green Star – Office Design v3 rated strata title office and is one of only a few commercial strata office buildings to target NABERS 5-star Energy and Water rating.
Ms Johnston added that “one exciting innovation is the “Melbourne City Solar Farm” – 132 kw of solar energy supplying both individual suites and the base building. There are 1.5kw Strata titled “Solar Lots” for a large number of suites providing electricity to those suites during daylight hours. Energy unused is simply fed back into the grid with a credit back to the suite. “Lifestyle Working Collins Street will contribute to the diversity of Victoria Harbour’s vibrant commercial offering and is a fitting and welcome addition to our precinct which boasts the highest concentration of green buildings in Australia,” concluded Ms Johnston. Situated at 838 Collins Street, Victoria Harbour, Docklands Further Information: lifestyleworkingcollinsstreet.com
Mr Guy said he was looking forward to community and stakeholder feedback on the Vision documentation and design guidelines. “The Vision documentation and design guidelines will set new standards in urban renewal including requirements for open space provision, setbacks on towers above podiums, a network of laneways and density in locations that respects existing residents.” The Consultation phase is now open where the community, landowners and existing businesses can comment on the Vision and associated directions as further details on a development contributions plan and infrastructure requirements will be released for feedback in the coming weeks. Public comments and submissions close on 22 November 2013. A final structure plan for the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Area is expected to be released in early 2014. www.fishermansbend.com.au

ISPT SECURES FLAGSHIP H&M STORE AT MELBOURNE’S ICONIC GPO The world famous Swedish retailer H&M has selected Melbourne’s iconic GPO, operated by ISPT, as home for its first store in Australia. The new store will become H&M’s Australian flagship store and one of its biggest in the world occupying three floors and almost 5000m2 of the heritage listed GPO building. Sam Curry, retail asset manager at ISPT, said the arrival of H&M would be part of the revitalisation of Melbourne’s CBD retail precinct. “We are delighted to have this opportunity to introduce such a famous and highly anticipated international fashion retailer to the Australian market,” Mr Curry said. “The H&M flagship at GPO will
truly differentiate the city of Melbourne as a retail destination benefitting shoppers and other retailers alike,” he added. H&M at GPO will be a full concept store - offering fashion and quality at the best price. In addition to its own brands, H&M’s exclusive guest-designer collaborations have included collections by Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf, Versace and Roberto Cavalli plus iconic collaborations with Marimekko, Madonna and Kylie Minogue. H&M has expanded substantially in recent years with 2900 stores spread across 51 markets with a growth target to increase its number of stores by 10-15 percent per year.
The retail revitalisation of GPO will see all food retailers and a small number of existing speciality retailers remain trading within the centre and alongside H&M. Mr Curry said ISPT’s commitment to generating long-term value from its retail assets involved a continual assessment of each property. “Our decision to secure an international brand for GPO and a large format retailer that could optimise the unique heritage space will cement GPO as one of the most successful retail destinations in the country,” Mr Curry said. ISPT began operating Melbourne GPO in April 2005 following the restoration of the much-loved historic postal hall
Bison United
and its reinvention as a unique retail and leisure destination featuring both Australian and international designer fashion. In Melbourne, ISPT also owns Midtown Plaza and just recently announced plans for a $20 million refurbishment of The Strand arcade.

3000 SOUNDS
Kooyeh – ‘Soul Cleansing’
By Tess Murphy Not a band to be easily defined, Kooyeh is taking music lovers around Melbourne by surprise. With a reggae influence, this nine piece band has a unique sound that caters to all groups of people. The band has released their first album, which happens to be homegrown, titled “Soul Cleansing”, and will be on tour this month. I sat down with Isaac, one of the lead singers, to discuss the creation of the band and its newfound popularity.
When did your group form?

separate houses to make our work more productive with less distractions.
Most of us come from NSW in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. A lot of great acts have come out of this area because there’s a lot of time on your hands to play and develop music and the scenery inspires creativity. It’s a good environment to write music but at the same time it can be your downfall because there’s only so many times you can play at the local pub. So eventually we had to move away, and we moved down to Melbourne.
You moved to Melbourne and built your own recording studio? Yes, our album was homegrown. We built the recording studio in a house out in Kew. We went around the neighbourhood during hard rubbish collection, with our van and got about twenty mattresses to line the walls and ceiling to sound proof it. We booked the album launch before the album was finished, and a word of advice to all musicians out there, don’t do that. You want to be able to take your time, and there were a lot of nights that we were up until six o’clock in the morning, which was pretty hard on everybody.
How do you find Melbourne as a setting to release your first album? What is the response like from your fans? Our album launch was a great show. It was at the Evelyn on Brunswick Street where we already had a residency. We teamed up with other bands that played the support for our shows, which meant
I understand you write a lot of the music for Kooyeh. Where does your inspiration come from? Myself and Sam, who plays the base, do most of the writing, in terms of coming up with the foundation of a song. And later on in the writing process, the horn players, the guitarist or the backing singers may add some ideas. Musically, my inspiration comes from a lot of different places, but I’m really into jazz. I like to write about people and everyday things. One song on the album is about a girl, and another is about the music industry and how difficult it is, while another is about the takeover of technology and everyone’s dependence on it. Sam’s lyrics are a bit more descriptive while mine are more direct. We work on our own songs, or we will collaborate on the same song.
that word of all the bands music spread to a broad range of people. We have had really supportive fans that come out purely to enjoy the music. Compared to Sydney, Melbourne definitely has more venues that cater to smaller bands.
Your songs are a product of each member of the group contributing a different sound. How do you find the dynamic of the group in the working together/living together attitude? It has definitely been interesting. It got a bit tense when we were trying to get the album out on time and everyone was getting frustrated. Once the album was released, everyone seemed to relax. The house in Kew was a stepping stone for the band, because we all moved here together and we helped each other out. We all have different jobs too; some of us play other gigs, like weddings, while others make coffee or cook because there’s not a lot of money in music. I think eventually we will move into
Your debut album is Soul Cleansing with the first single titled Mountain Top and you are on national tour until the end of October. What are your plans for after? We will be filming another film clip and releasing our second single titled, “Haven’t Found a Lady” which is track six on the album. After touring we will continue to gig around Melbourne. Later on, we hope to release our second album in May of next year. Eventually, we’d love to be able to share our music all around the world.

The Kokoda Challenge returns to Melbourne The extraordinary Kokoda Memorial Challenge is returning to Melbourne this year - taking place on the 27th October. The course can be completed over a 30km or 15km stretch and is predominately a team cross-country and bushwalking exercise. The experience is designed to reflect the Spirit of Kokoda: courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. The demanding challenge begins in the Dandenong Ranges, commencing at Ferntree Gully, continuing to the Kalorama Park, taking in the Kokoda Memorial Walk and testing competitors’
stamina with the 1000 steps, before looping back down The Ranges again. Incredibly, veterans of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association based in Melbourne, who were amongst the first Australian Troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track, will be present on the day to watch the challenge unfold. According to Kokoda Challenge founder and Vietnam Veteran Doug Henderson, people from all walks of life sign up to the Challenge as it sets personal task for the individual while at the same time offering the chance to help young people grow into contributing
members of society. “It’s such a great event as it brings an opportunity for ordinary people, such as myself, to achieve extraordinary things,” said Henderson. Almost 300 competitors took part in the trail last year, and this year it is hoped that over 600 people will take up both the 30km and the 15km stretches. Monies raised from the event are used to fund the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP) - a 12-month program for young people aged 15-18 with the main goal to build resilience,
self-esteem and life-skills that support young people into adulthood. When: 27th October from 7am Entry Fee: $70 per person To register & for further info: www.kokodachallenge.com

When Men Should Ask For Help
By Dana Atkin - Professional Kinesiology Practitioner “Everyone stand up. Raise your left hand as if under oath, now take your right hand and hold your ‘boys’ and repeat after me…” This is how a facilitator at a conference once introduced his overriding message at a male dominated industry staff conference many years ago. The oath these men took was to recognize when they needed help, to seek help and not put off going to the doctor because their life might just depend on it. This clever, funny and to the point introduction to a conference has stuck with me. It broke the ice around some important issues and helped people feel more comfortable because men’s health generally seems to be an awkward topic, even for men. And in the lead up to Movember, I thought this would be a good topic to cover. Tradition, society, and beliefs put women into a role of being looked
after. Women, generally speaking, instinctively know when to take time out for ourselves, when to take ourselves to the doctor and where to find a sympathetic ear to which we can “download” our concerns to. While there are a lot of men out there who are just as instinctive about when to ask for help, it is far less common. In tradition, society and some beliefs, men are regarded as the ‘rock’ or the strong one, the provider. And as such, a lot of men believe that they can’t let their guard down or appear vulnerable or stressed. Male or female, we are all human and all have the same hopes and fears. Keeping this in mind can make a huge difference. Remember the
last time you were scared of going to the doctor, fearing the worst. Now imagine that a mate of yours has a similar issue and is putting off going to the doctor, or your brother or your dad or son. Would you want them to wait it out worrying and hoping for the best or would you rather they get it seen to as soon as possible to know exactly what they are dealing with? So men, here’s some basic rules of when to ask for help around signs and symptoms you might be experiencing: 1. It is always okay to ask for help. 2. I f it’s not normal for you and your body, ask for help. 3. I f it is normal for you but you’re worried, ask for help. 4. I f you’re not sure if it’s anything to worry about, ask for help. 5. I f you’re overly stressed and don’t know what to do about it, ask for help.

It was our second year of creating a new family tradition. Someone recently told me that something is not a ‘tradition’ until you have done it for at least three years. So I guess we have one more year to go. We recently built a Sukkah, a hut, a temporary dwelling or for the likes of my children, a cubby house. Our Little Miss spent days creating pictures, paper chains and then helped her Daddy actually build it. He laid out the
poles, she then moved them; he asked her to hold the poles up while he joined them together, and she stood holding the poles. It was a true team effort. The joy in her eyes was electrifying. The excitement to be eating in her cubby house was even more thrilling than a chocolate ice cream. And as we built our Sukkah, watched our children jump, play, hide and even eat in it, we realised that memories were being created. I always imagined creating something for my children that I didn’t have growing up and giving them even more than what I was privileged to have.
6. I f you sometimes feel like it’s all too much, ask for help. 7. I f you’re lost for a solution, ask for help and 8. See rule number one. This help can come in the form of a mate to talk to or a doctor to discuss symptoms with but regardless of where you go for help a moment of bravery to talk about it could be worth a lifetime with your family.

This whole parenting gig is all about creating little souls that have amazing memories, experiences and joy. Memories are being created - building the Sukkah with their Daddy, decorating it with their Mummy and doing everything else together as a family. They will know what Sukkot is, they will be able to tell their stories to their children, and just maybe, the tradition will continue for many years past that initial three year starting point.
Sukkot is the harvest festival that commemorates the Israelites' wandering the desert after their Exodus from Egypt. This Jewish holiday is observed by building and spending time in a temporary outdoor structure called a sukkah.
Volunteer run Melbourne Charity ‘Artists for Kids’ Culture’ (AKC) marks 20 years of inspired funding to support kids in need. Over 50 artists have donated their art work for the 20th anniversary of Artists for Kids’ Culture Art Exhibition and Auction. This event is a regular on the calendar as art lovers come together to raise funds for disadvantaged kids across Melbourne to provide access to art and cultural experiences that many of us take for granted, such as learning an instrument, taking dance lessons,
joining the local soccer club or perhaps just being able to attend school camp. The artwork of AKC founders David Larwill and Jo Darvall have been a constant presence at the auction and this year will again not disappoint. Adding to the array of interesting and varied contemporary Australian artists are; David Bromley, Sally Smart, Graham Fransella, Heidi Yardley, Mick Turner, Kate Rodhe, Lisa Roet, Lewis Miller and newcomers Rona Green and Jason Waterhouse. The exhibition is open daily from Wednesday 9th of October until Sunday

‘Girlwise’ – A girl’s guide to being a Tween
Interview by Lisa Quittner Best-selling author and educator, Sharon Witt knows a thing or two about the difficulties young girls face in the ‘Tween-age’ years. This is a tricky time between the ages of 7-12 when friendship dynamics change, self-esteem issues begin to arise, and bullying rears its ugly head. As a Mother of two teens and immersed in the teen world for over two decades as a Secondary Educator, Sharon follows on from her bestselling Teen Talk parenting book series with Girlwise: A Guide to being YOU!, which explores the importance of girls being created as unique individuals of great value and worth. Topics covered include developing self-esteem, coping with negative feelings and discovering their own unique talents. The second book in the series, Girlwise: A guide to FRIENDS!, explores the importance of girls developing healthy friendships and how to deal with friendship issues as they arise. magmedia.com.au

Sharon kindly gave 3000Melbourne some further insight into the series and the tricky Tween-age years.
Tweens experience so many issues and confusing emotions and feelings, what inspired you to write the Girlwise series and how did you determine what needed to be included?
also impacts greatly the influences on our girls- both the positive and negative. They are required to learn a whole new range of skills to equip them for their adolescent journey.
I have been writing books specifically for teenagers for the past 6 years, however, I was receiving so many requests from parents asking to provide resources for the younger age group. Interestingly, these are the books I wish I had to give to my own daughter when she was in Middle Primary School. Our girls are growing up so fast and I wanted to be able to give them some guidance before they hit adolescence.
Through your experience, what would you define as the key elements to keeping communication open between Tweens and parents?
As both a mother and as a secondary teacher and mentor over the past twenty years, how much have you seen change for young girls? I have seen a significant shift in the way girls grow up and relate to each other over the past twenty years. With the rise in many inappropriate role models for girls gracing our television screens and music culture, there seems to be a push for girls to grow up too quicklywell before their minds are ready.
Has social media, iPhone, iPad and iPod technology created new issues for Tweens to deal with and navigate around? No doubt! Our girls are part of a generation that has always known digital technology, the internet and social media. It was so much simpler for my generation of girls growing up because we didn't have all of these social interactions. It
Probably closely linked in with the above questions, parents are required to work perhaps even harder in this climate to keep the lines of communication open with their tweens because so much technology requires us not to even have to have face to face contact. Parents need to ensure they take time out of their busy schedules to allow conversations to happen with their children. Turn off the car radio when driving and talk instead. Take your child out for afternoon tea occasionally and just chat.
I loved the section on 'Be a friend to yourself' in Girlwise - 'A guide to Friends'; self esteem is such an important aspect of growing up, how can we encourage our girls to embrace their strengths, understand their weaknesses and appreciate their differences? I see so many girls in my work that seem to have such a low opinion of themselves and their abilities. I love to encourage girls to develop a positive selfimage by discovering what they are good at, what their
passions are and how they can use their abilities and gifts to positively affect others. For some girls, it will mean we need to encourage them to step out of their comfort zone occasionally and give new things a try.
Girlwise - 'A guide to taking care of your body' & Girlwise - 'A girls guide to life' are other titles in the series, do they follow on for an older age group? Yes, I have already produced a series for the older age group of girls. My series ‘Teen Talk’ has been written for children aged 10 upwards. ‘Teen Talk-Girl Talk’ has been written also specifically for girls age 10 upwards and covers significant issues such as body image, self esteem, friendships and puberty. They have been so well received and we have over 20,000 copies in print. Sharon is also a regular media commentator on television and radio. Her latest Girlwise books are available from the start of October: www.sharonwitt.com.au RRP $12.95.

Are crystals and gemstones just pretty looking baubles, or do they have a greater purpose in their relationship with human beings? I didn’t realise that crystals were so much more than just something pretty to look at until my hand chakras activated. As I started becoming self-aware and noticed their fine vibrations in my hands, I found particular crystals seemed to calm me when I was stressed or anxious. This led me to use them when healing myself, and I would instinctively place them on certain points of my body when lying down. My body would then rapidly settle into a state of balance, encouraging my mind to slow down. When I reached this state, my mind, body, and spirit began healing, and over time, these aspects of self merged, offering a greater understanding of who I really am. One beautiful and powerful crystal is the amethyst, which is transparent and purple to lavender in colour. It is an excellent crystal for absorbing negativity in hostile environments. Its healing properties include its ability to be both calming and stimulating to the mind, depending on what is needed, allowing greater focus and control of the faculties, enabling a person to feel less scattered, thereby promoting integration of new ideas. This crystal is commonly associated with the crown chakra.

The Beauty of Crystals
Flourless Chocolate Cakes Created by BY MARKET ESPRESSO – QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET
Crystals are solid matter in which atoms are arranged in regular geometrical shapes that were created as our planet formed. They change as the earth evolves, recording all the alterations of each phase of evolution, and they hold enormous amounts of information on the earth’s structure. They have recognisable structures that have been affected by temperature, pressure, chemical conditions, and the amount of space in which they form. Table salt and sugar are everyday materials you encounter as crystals, as are many gemstones, including the diamond.
Cakes – Makes 28
TO MAKE:
INGREDIENTS:
To make the cakes: In a 2L bowl melt chocolate and butter. Meanwhile sift cocoa and combine with almond meal in a large bowl.
Cakes: 400g chocolate 250g butter 4 tsp coffee 250g almond meal 2/3 cup cocoa 10 separated eggs 1 ½ cups sugar Ganache: 250ml cream 350g dark chocolate 25g honey 100g butter cubed
Whisk yolks with 1 cup of sugar in a separate bowl. Whisk whites and ½ cup of sugar on low speed. Stir coffee into chocolate mix and reheat for 30 seconds. Stir chocolate into almond mix, then stir in yolk mix. By this stage yolks should have reached soft peaks. Using a metal kitchen spoon, gently fold half of them into
the chocolate mix, then fold the rest. Divide between 28 tins that have been lined with papers. Bake at 160 degrees Celsius for approximately 30 minutes or until springy. Chocolate Ganache: Heat cream until scalding. Combine chocolate, honey and butter in a bowl and pour heated cream over the top. Mix all the ingredients together until smooth and glossy. Allow to cool and thicken. To Plate: Once cold, decorate the cakes with ganache and two chocolate curls.
This recipe is included in ‘Flavours of Urban Melbourne’ a beautifully designed coffee table book that takes readers on a culinary journey throughout Melbourne’s notable eateries.

Busy Bees
“Spring is here & that's when we get really busy ensuring our colony is growing fast! We need as much variety of nectar and pollen as we can get.“
It is vital to protect honey bees and include them in our cities and sprawling urban landscapes.” Shares Vanessa & Matt, The Master Beekeepers.
This is the message from the bees of Melbourne City Rooftop Honey. They are doing us proud and sharing the love around the suburbs and city of Melbourne with their beehives.
The amazing thing is the different taste from each area. From South Melbourne, to North, from Fitzroy to Hawthorn you’ll get a different flavour to delight your tastebuds. A great gift idea too!
Urban beehives are popular around the world – cities such as Paris, New York and closer to home; Sydney and Melbourne are following the trend. Hives are utilising unused roofs, balconies & gardens all around the city. This really connects us to our food source. “Our services have already helped ‘re-home’ 70 swarms of honeybee colonies from swarms caught by ourselves and from unwanted colonies saved from extermination during the Spring and Summer. Looking to the future, as we expand on concepts of growing food in our cities & making them cooler, greener & more sustainable -
And you can get involved by sponsoring a hive! How awesome would that be for some unique team building! Get busy like a bee, get dressed up in a special outfit, learn how to handle the bees and the best yet – name your queen! (Mine would be called Miss Meaningful of course) “Variety is the spice and health of life! Who wants to eat just one thing?” The bees suggest us humans need to get planting…. herbs, herbs and more herbs – oh, how the bees love them!

By Jane M Hutchinson ‘Braxton is dead’; those three words kept circling over and over in Zara’s mind as she hung up the phone from Richard. She was suspended in a moment of time. In the days leading up to Braxton’s death, Richard had thought Braxton wasn’t quite himself, however , with Braxton’s unpredictability it was always hard to know what being himself actually was, even for those closest to him. Braxton was quiet, reflective and somewhat nostalgic talking about his regrets, triumphs and the loss of his brother. Richard had put it down to the booze and the bender he’d been on the past few days. He’d talked about the feeling of not being able to connect with other people, to trust and believe in the others. It was the first time Richard had heard Braxton speak about living with a sense of loss that almost haunted him and the constant need to search for something, not knowing what that something was only made him become more disillusioned. He didn’t say much more than that. The night before they had been at dinner. This time they hadn’t made a booking but the best table in house was quickly found for Braxton. As usual in the public arena Braxton was bold and charismatic. The crisp white table clothes, sleek high back leather chairs and the shimmering chandeliers provided the perfect stage for countless numbers of women to linger and not so subtly make attempts to catch Braxton’s eye. All hoping they would be the one to captivate him. This was to be the last time Richard would see Braxton.
Braxton Miles hung himself later that night. Police estimate it was around 3am in the morning, that he made that fatal decision in a hotel room in Las Vegas. When Richard couldn’t get a hold of Braxton on his phone and he asked the concierge for a spare key to Braxton’s room thinking he was probably hung over and passed out from all the scotch the night before. As Richard opened the door he felt the cold air of death breeze over him. Standing in the door way Richard called Braxton’s name. There was no response just a thick blanket of silence covering the room. Richard’s heart was pounding; his eyes wide open as he slowly entered the room. Three more steps and then Richard was to be confronted by death. There was no pulse, his body was heavy, there was no life running through Braxton’s body. Richard sat there with his friend, a person he had come to love. He stayed there with Braxton until the undertakers arrived. As they took Braxton’s body out of the room the reality of the situation started to hit Richard. There he was half way across the other side of the world on his own with his best friend who had just died. It was at that moment that Richard called Zara. Like the story? Book Review by Rebecca Howden 'My Brilliant Friend' by Elena Ferrante My Brilliant Friend is the alluring first part of a trilogy following the lives two young women growing up in a poor village in 1950s Naples. This is the fourth novel of Italian author Elena Ferrante to be translated into English, and presents a compelling portrait of a friendship that is as fiercely intimate as it is full of rivalry. As young children at elementary school, Elena, the porter’s daughter, and Lina, the shoemaker’s daughter, quickly become inseparable. The prospect of intellectualism as a path out of their shabby town captivates them, and they dream of one day writing a book like Little Women. Lina is naturally brilliant, coasting through their lessons with remarkable ease, while Elena works hard to keep up with her, finding herself perpetually second best. This unequal dynamic comes to define their friendship as they grow up – the fiery and charismatic Lina always outshining her friend, leaving Elena to at turns envy, resent and worship her.

In Conversation with Braxton Miles
irrepressible Lina continues to find small ways to show up her friend and treat her triumphs with disdain. As Elena flourishes academically, she notices “with increasing clarity that it made (Lina) somewhat uneasy, as if it were ultimately she who felt the need to continuously prove that she could talk to me as an equal.” The ‘superior’ friend, as it turns out, may not be the happier one. Yet at the same time, Lina has found new areas in which she excels, blooming into an astonishing beauty that bewitches all the neighbourhood boys – and the attention brings drama and unrest into both their lives. The post-war Neapolitan neighbourhood itself plays a large part in the tensions simmering beneath the girls’ story. It’s a small and volatile community, where everyone knows everyone and the culture of violence and family feuds pervades every aspect of their lives. There are guns, knives, murders and a motley assortment of personalities. As Ferrante follows the slowly diverging trajectories of the two girls, they become increasingly aware of how claustrophobic the limitations imposed on them by their poverty and their status as women can be. Much of the intensity of the novel is tampered by the classical, episodic structure, and language that is both solemn and beautiful. As a standalone novel, it’s an engaging snapshot of life – but the masterful shift towards the end will leave you yearning for the next instalment.
Things start to shift when it’s time for the girls to continue on to high school. Elena, permitted by her reluctant parents to keep studying, works furiously to become an academic star, but Lina is made to drop out and work in her father’s shop. Angry and conflicted, the
