In an Australian exclusive, German Minimal Techno producer Pantha Du Prince (Hendrik Weber) headlines Melbourne Music Week with his astonishing Elements of Light live concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre in November. Elements of Light is an unusual live concert developed in collaboration with Oslo’s The Bell Laboratory. The project explores the intersection between electronica and classical composition in a 40-minute “symphony” of bells, percussion and electronics. Created for a Norwegian music festival, Elements of Light has since toured the world and been recorded for respected indie label, Rough Trade Records. A visual and sonic spectacle, this mesmerising performance sees Pantha Du Prince and the six-member group The Bell Laboratory coax magical sounds out of gongs, large and small bells, and a swathe of tuned percussion instruments including marimba, xylophone and cymbals. Centred on the enveloping ambience of the bells, Elements of Light explores their resonance layered with organicallycreated electronic textures and beats in an unbroken, continually-developing 40 minutes of music. acoustic and stunning surrounds of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is the best place to hear the gorgeous music of this world-renowned producer. A remarkable show deserves a remarkable support performance, in this case by Oval (aka Marcus Popp). Widely regarded as the godfather of glitch, Oval’s legendary early album releases sent shockwaves through the 90’s electronic landscape. After a long hiatus, Oval is back to change the game all over again, with a new, ground-breaking hyper-real style. SOUTH MELBOURNE
STREET
SCENE
Part 7 CLARENDON ST
By Andrew Powell Retail’s in a state of flux…so is Clarendon Street. This street seems to have been bitten by the retail collapse but strangely only within certain blocks. As I was walking down here with Archie in his pram it struck me how many changes of stores there has been in a short time in the blocks of Clarendon Street near Park Street on the market side. Amongst all the stores along Clarendon Street there are stand-outs. These stores are discussed by people all over Melbourne. One such store is the one and only, Beggar Man Thief. An enlightening view into the male psyche, if all retail for men were like this then the male would be a shopaholic and have loads of shoes. This store
alone has changed my view of what a retail experience should be and why quality is better than quantity. But if you can do both then it’s certainly going to make you feel good! In contrast, at the end of the street where you can get a car park almost every time is the Sacred Mission Op Shop. This has some of the best bargains you will find and was listed in the top op shops in Melbourne last year by a number of knowledgeable bloggers. Many new items find their way here as well as 50c books and all sorts of vintage goodies. However, many of these things go as quickly as they arrive. Persevere and you will find high quality at low prices. A recent addition to the street has
been the Chiron Health Food Shop & Café. The brand has its own range of skin care products and from my point-of-view the baby range has to be highly commended and using product from their own organic farm going into their range, I have to admire them. If you don’t have a fixation with health food or skin products then I’d recommend the coffee here anyway. Please support someone local – they’ve taken a risk in a highly competitive market and deserve success. As I walked down the street, I was asked by a lady if I’d seen a payphone on this street. It struck me then how they’ve disappeared from everywhere. If nothing else they kept vandalism off home fences. A moment of clarity!
Maybe this is why so much tagging is on houses, fences and signs…the phone boxes and phone booths have gone. Café after café, clothing retail and electrical goods seem to have come and gone to be updated, reinvested and hopefully, reignited by developments on the main strip. However, regeneration occurs at great speed. Residential dwellings are over retail spaces and “shared” space seems to be the next trend forming here but I can’t help but wonder if the lack of what retail experts call “critical mass” is the reason for regeneration. The old fashioned High Street where the one street serviced all your shopping needs is gone and we are left to travel for what we want…or get it online.

ASK DR. JOHN! Q: I’m turning 40 this year and want to gift myself the perfect smile after years of not liking it too much! My front teeth are slightly crooked and one of them has a small chip. I don’t want orthodontic treatment as I want immediate results. What do you recommend? A: Congratulations on the big day! It’s wonderful that you want to do something for yourself, and we can certainly help you find a solution. As with any case, I would hesitate to diagnose without having seen you, but based on the information you have given, it does seem like porcelain veneers may be the solution you are looking for. Veneers are a thin strong shell of porcelain that are made to fit over the visible surface of your tooth and are an ideal way of revamping your smile, especially in cases of slight crowding or chipped teeth. This procedure usually takes two to three visits to complete, over a period of two to three weeks, so it’s not quite immediate though definitely not as long as orthodontic treatment. If this is something that makes you
smile, the first step would be to make an appointment with a Smile Angel at Freedom Dental who will answer all your questions, and organise your appointment with a dentist to see if you are a suitable candidate for veneers. We look forward to helping you achieve the smile of your dreams! Dr John Hagiliassis (Platinum Elite provider of Invisalign) is the principal dentist at Freedom Dental Spa, a long standing dental practice serving the City of Port Phillip and Melbourne for over 30 years and offers high quality dentistry and six star service in a relaxing spa like environment.
