n o t e s f r o m t h e e d i t o r. . . It struck me recently how much of an expression of love a wedding is – by the couple getting married and their guests, of course – but also by the people who help them bring it together. I recently traveled to Carmel in California for the second Forage & Fern workshop, and was so happy to meet the most amazing group of people. It was heart-warming to speak to several wedding photographers and listen to their experiences of capturing weddings in their different corners of the world. I was lucky to have the company of a wonderful team for the three days and each artist poured their heart and soul into teaching and inspiring the attendees. I also recently had the pleasure of attending my sister’s wedding – there’s nothing quite like being in the presence of so much love to remind you of what the most important part of the day is! The comfort of knowing that she has found that one person… well, you can’t ask for more than that for your loved ones. Whether you get married in the early stages of your adult life, or the latter, committing to another person is one of the bravest and most vulnerable things you can do. This issue, too, is an expression of love – in it, we celebrate some spectacular real weddings, including a charming family affair in a small village in Eastern France, a majestic mountain wedding in Montana, and a stylish soiree in the famous gardens of Babylonstoren near Cape Town. Striving to bring you the highest quality of editorials, we’ll be whisking you off to the moody highlands of Scotland, sharing a strikingly gorgeous African shoot, and discovering a whole lot of loveliness in between. Our cover story, captured by the talented Eric Kelley and expertly styled by Type A Society, evokes an old Californian ghost story. We sincerely hope you enjoy the beauty throughout this issue, and find yourself lost in the stories along the way. Until next time, KATE HOLLAND, EDITOR

"Our vision for this bridal session included a discussion on the bare necessities we associate with an organic and timeless vibe, and building off of those essentials to create the feel of a bride who is timeless, full of character and alluring. The essentials we chose were a stunning, layered dress, full of movement, intentional florals and other natural elements speaking to the organic element, as well as a location that makes the viewer ponder its history. We wanted to keep things simple, but also full of thoughtful details."

t’s

been

that

fools fall in love, and that could be said of Candice and Brett – if only in the sense that a chance meeting on April Fool’s Day was the start of their relationship! Then, a few years later, the couple found themselves in Paris on New Year’s Eve, where Brett surprised Candice on the Pont Passerelle Solférino by writing his proposal

With so much romance in their past, it was only appropriate that they chose to kick off their future in another romantic location, this time the famously beautiful gardens of Babylonstoren, in South Africa. The venue provided inspiration in more ways than one – not only did all the florals come from the farm, but its connection to Delft pottery was reflected in the blue and white palette and Delft vases and linens on the tables. The final touch was a surprise white dessert installation, including Babylonstoren’s legendary carrot cake.

ELLEN

Seb wasn’t looking for love the night he met his wife-to-be – in fact, he was far more interested in enjoying himself with his friends. Then in walked Ellen, and he was smitten. A case of the jitters led to an awkward first kiss, but fortunately she found him endearing. Those nerves made a reappearance the night Seb proposed beneath the Eiffel Tower, sweating in the middle of winter, but again Ellen couldn’t resist! Seb’s family owns a chateau in the village of Étrabonne, so it was there they gathered to celebrate their union, making use of a collection of plates, medicine bottles and milk jugs that the antique-loving couple had sourced for a year before. Each vessel was filled with wildflowers grown specially by the bride, who carried Craspedia, one of her favourite blooms.

Ellen wore a custom-made dress with an open back and a lace bolero for the ceremony, and inside her mother-in-law stitched the couple’s initials in blue for good luck. Her shoes and jewellery were also special – each label reflected the name of one of her beloved late grandparents.

GROWING UP I SPENT many happy summers at the beach with my family. My father was a History teacher, California born-and-raised, who loved to show his children the world, so when summer came around it meant we packed up our car and hitched up our tent trailer for a grand time. One of his favourite places to go was the El Camino Real, making our way down the coast to see all the California missions. San Juan Capistrano was always my favourite – I loved how the mission had old and new sections, and crumbled ruins from earthquakes that had toppled its sunstone walls. Every spring, swallows came and made their homes in the ruins and vines would bloom, and I was fascinated by the contrast between young and old. Eventually I came across an old ghost story connected to San Juan Capistrano and was inspired to combine it with my own happy memories to create this shoot. The story tells of two young lovers, who were forbidden to be together but would slip away and meet secretly. When caught, the girl was forced to do penance at morning mass. During the service, a huge earthquake struck, turning the church to rubble. It is said that on the night of a half-moon one can see her face in the window of the Great Stone Church, still doing penance for her forbidden love‌ " CARRIE MOE, STYLIST

ayrshire garland ima ges by orange photog ra phie | ayrshire | scotland When Montana-based photographers Samantha and Reid reached out via social media for like-minded creatives to collaborate on a shoot during their trip through Scotland, a beautiful partnership was born between themselves and local floral talents, Pyrus. Hoping to show a new and unexpected side to Scotland – beyond the typical tartan and Highland scenery – the team took a conceptual approach, and chose the Kelburn Estate in Ayrshire as their location. They were inspired by the Graffiti Project, an extraordinary piece of contemporary art which dominates the walls of Kelburn Castle, and both challenges and sits peacefully within the surrounding natural landscape. “We wanted to explore that maverick spirit, and bring a sense of something unexpected and surreal to the glen, taking bold, primary colours from the mural and incorporating land art and site-specific pieces into the shoot,” Fiona and Natalya of Pyrus explain. They sourced unique, beautiful gowns from Rowanjoy in Edinburgh and added contemporary tweed pieces by Walker Slater to add an edge to the look while retaining a sense of the traditional, and showcasing local artisan techniques. For the bouquet, they opted for a softer, more romantic feel, combining garden blooms with foraged woodland treasures and taxidermy wings for an unconventional touch. “We are influenced by nature in its entirety,” they explain, “and often use materials such as wings or seaweed, or found objects like skulls in our work – we find the complexity more interesting and contemporary than flowers alone.”

E M M A & C L AY T O N Emma and Clayton Lynch’s connection was so meant to be, that it was obvious to others before they even met – the day Emma’s best friend’s parents were introduced to Clayton, they knew he was the one for her. She took a little longer to convince, but eventually the two met for coffee and discovered their matchmakers had been right all along. After a romantic kayak proposal, they decided on an intimate wedding with just families and close friends. The location was personal as well as beautiful, since the couple had spent time on the beaches of 30A Florida early in their relationship. When they came across Stork’s Nest, its deck overlooking the pristine white sand beaches of Grayton Beach, they knew they’d found the perfect setting.

/ 71

“I wish I could go back in time so that I could stand in the middle of it all and just stare. It was all so beautiful.“ In her job as a photographer, Emma has seen a ton of beautiful weddings and Pinterest-worthy ideas, but when it came to planning their own celebration, she wanted something different. “I wanted it to look and feel like us and to be timeless and elegant,” she says. “I've always been drawn to a natural, organic style and Clayton loves the outdoors, so I wanted our wedding to reflect that.” From the farmstyle tables covered in Silk & Willow runners, brass candlesticks and heirloom gold-rimmed china inherited from Emma’s grandmother Ada, to the handwritten oyster shell place cards, it did just that.

“A friend had recently mentioned a beautiful historic chapel on a farm in Bloomfield, Virginia, that her family is restoring. After peeking at a few pictures on her phone, we were immediately smitten and the ideas started flowing! The moody lighting from the towering windows perfectly highlighted the worn teal walls that reveal layer upon layer of the past 158 years, including faded murals and marks still visible from where the pews once were. It was important to us to create a relaxed setting where would could enjoy a day of creating beautiful things with our favourite people, and to make the most of this unbelievable space, so we only selected a few elements to work with, to build our concept of ‘timeless beauty’. Gossamer curated stunning pieces for our model Casey to wear, complemented by Ana Buitrago’s hair and make-up designs. Warm-toned flowers contrasted with the cooler tones of the walls, and arrangements were made up of buttery garden roses, white peonies, blooming vines, daffodils and tulips. We wrapped our bouquet in a soft ivory Silk & Willow ribbon, and proceeded to chase the light.” — Lauren & Rachel, Sweet Root Village

It isn’t every groom that sets the mood for his proposal with panic, but that’s what Jim Wano inadvertently did when a detour to pick up his engagement ring sent him home late to his worried girlfriend, Leslie. “In he walked,” she remembers, “and I was so overwhelmed with relief, I was crying.” Tears of worry soon gave way to tears of joy, however, when Jim got down on one knee and out popped the ring! It was the moment that the couple, who met online, officially went from match.com to match made in heaven, and started planning a celebration that brought the unique character of their relationship into the design.
